Hi all,

Glad to see such a place. Hope y'all can help me with a problem. Let me be as detailed as possible so apologies in advance if the post is too long. I want to give as full a description of my PC problem. I tried posting this earlier but I was informed it was too long. I'll post this in two parts, the first involving the office computer, the second involving my home computer. Both have the same problem with regard to the flash drive.

I recently purchased a Kingston Data Traveler 2.0 2GB flash drive. I have used in several computers, but the problem reared up after I used it in a coworker's computer and then connected the flash drive to my office computer.

Office computer:

WinXP Pro SP2
AVG Free 7.5
The flash drive worked fine until one day I got gibberish characters for "Open" and "Explore" when I right-click the drive using my office computer.

AVG found VBS/small and deleted the offending file. However, in another computer running Avast, it found the same trojan and deleted it. Still dubious, I ran the BitDefender online scanner and it detected Trojan.Clive.B in autorun.exe instead (found in E:\RECYCLER). I ran PRT and it restored the "Open" and "Explore" after removing the autorun.inf but after rebooting and reconnecting the flash drive, the gibberish is back.

I downloaded clean-autoruns and hijackthis on my office computer. The following are the log files as of today (4 August 2007, 1111AM).

Hi everyone, I tried to disable autorun per Microsoft's instructions. They said that there was no way to disable it through Windows interface and that you must edit the registry to disable autorun. I followed their instructions...went to open, "regedit", followed the steps to the CD drive, and entered the value as "0" per their instructions. Problem is when I insert a disk into the disk drive it still autoruns about half the time. It's only about half the time though. What is this all about. If it makes any difference it seems newer software auto runs but old stuff doesn't. Thanks for the advice!

A:Disabled autorun in the resgistry but autorun still working?

A workaround I sometimes use is hold down the Shift key when inserting the CD, the autorun is then bypassed. But this doesnt solve your issue.

Right-click on the drive icon for your CD drive, and select Properties.
Choose the AutoPlay tab, and choose the desired action for each type of CD. For example, choose Music CD, then click Select an action to perform, then select Take no action.

I'm running Windows Vista 32 bit on my laptop and my BitDefender has popped a message saying I have been infected by Autorun.qr and it is located in Autorun.inf. It says it has denied access to it and the system is now protected it but the message still pops up about it now and then. Apparently when I do google searches, the searches go good but whenever I click a search link, I get redirected to a malware sites such as info-feed.com. I set my antivirus shield to "aggressive" and my firewall is now set to "ask". I can't seem to click Deep System Scan or any scan actually I'm also not able to update Windows by running Windows Update. I get error: WindowsUpdate_80244019. I searched up the code and it says that either a "computer virus that has turned off the Windows Automatic Update, or another service on your computer that is needed by Windows Update."I read somewhere that it can run on usb devices and the best thing to do to make it not infect it is to make a folder on the root of the usbs called AUTORUN.INF. So.. I attached 2 usbs and did that but I read in another forum that it is baddd to attach any usbs while being infected.. *slaps forehead* I'm not sure if usbs are infected though.>_< help would be greatly appreciated!!

I have printed out the sheet and scanned it so that it is on the computer I am using now, in case I need to show you the page and not just the line I have typed in. Hey peoples,

Okay the deal is that I type using a Dvorak layout and not the standard QWERTY layout so I written myself a program out of ahk that makes exceptions for cut copy and paste and placed that on the student drive (partition) at school. Normally every time I log in I would have to go into the drive and start my dvorak layout program manually. And every time I log in, the computer mounts that partition, is there a way for me to make a autorun.inf that would auto execute my program? Will autorun work for a mounted harddrive (student partition), or Only removable media?

Also the computer runs on a virtual drive that purges itself every time I relog so placing it in the startup folder would not work, this is the only other option I can think of. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Vista Ultimate 32-bit SP1.

Autoplay/autorun doesn't!!

Autoplay is set ON and I've reset to defaults. I've googled and done everything I can find to fix, but nothing does.
The only thing I couldn't find was a "Data" item in Microsoft's page:-

The Restrict CD-ROM access to locally logged on user only option might be turned off. To turn this option on, follow these steps:
Click Start, and then click Run.In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.Locate and then click the following registry subkey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinlogonIn the navigation pane, under Data, if the value for allocatecdroms is 0, go to step 5.In the navigation pane, under Data, if the value for allocatecdroms is 1, right-clickallocatecdroms, and then click Modify. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.Exit Registry Editor.Test to determine whether the issue is resolved.but it may be for XP only.
Microsoft's autofix.exe crashes in Vista.

Flash drives don't bring up anything, but are found with explorer.
Music & DVDs just sit there. If I use explorer to explore, they'll spin and let me view.

I've run out of ideas.

What else can I try?

Ok, I know this is a sore subject, but are there any work-a-rounds to get handy programs like PortableApps to at least be an option to run when you plug it in? It kind of defeats the purpose of the whole thing. I'm not plugging in rogue USB sticks from strangers in dark alleys, just my own USB hard drives. It get really annoying when you have to drill into your own drive 20 times a day just to double click the exe to run the dang thing you know is safe.

Someone in another thread posed Autorunner.exe, but it doesn't seem to do anything at all...

wouldn't a autorun.inf do the trick?

You can search for options and syntax of autorun.inf in google.

Just an example of an autorun.inf:

[autorun]
OPEN=custom_setup.CMD
ICON=SETUP.EXE,0

shell\configure=&Configure...
shell\configure\command=SETUP.EXE

Good luck

Hi!

For a few days now, my avast! 4.8 professional has been acting up to a trojan - AutoRun-E [Wrm] found in appdata/local/temp

So I deleted all the contents of temp from safe mode. But it still somehow shows up in avast's eyes.

This is what it shows:

Path: \AppData\Local\Temp\etilqs_Pzx4HaQCxRkLkGr

Infection: BV:AutoRun-E [Wrm]

How do I get rid of this? I did try going through posts with similar infections. Most people suggested flash disinfector which didn't go past the security screen. It didn't install. What do I do?

And another thing, I recently deleted a folder which was named resycler and an autorun.inf file from all my hard disk drives.

Another symptom is that the auto run function doesn't seem to work for any of my flash drives.

From what I know, I think I have one of those many flash drive viruses.

I also installed hijackThis and got a log from it. Where do I post it to get help?

A:How to get rid of AutoRun-E [Wrm]

Flash (usb, pen, thumb, jump) drive infections usually involve malware that loads an autorun.inf file into the root folder of all drives (internal, external, removable). When the removable media is inserted, autorun looks for autorun.inf and automatically executes another malicious file to run on your computer. When a flash drive becomes infected, the Trojan will infect a system when the removable media is inserted if autorun has not been disabled. let me say that in order to burn iso..i have just renamed the longnamed file to (the longname).iso
i have been dl'ing it with ff and it is adding a ,dlm to the file and i have just been removing that in the filename..HELP!

A:Autorun.dll

"dlm" seems to stand for download manager. And the file should have been renamed automatically by the software once it has completed downloading. Maybe it never finished? Do you have a download manager and/or Firefox addon installed?

Q: Autorun

I can't get CDs to autorun, i'v tried right clicking the drive, auto play tab then picking actions for different types of content, that didn't work. I'v tried looking at the registery and autorun is set to 1, the tutorial i was reading said change it to 0 to turn it off so i'm guessing my one is set to on. I'v also tried tweak UI, but auto run is already on. Auto run has never worked, anyone got any ideas?

My optical drive went out on me a couple weeks ago, so I had to get a replacement. Now that I have, I put it in, and it doesn't autorun like it used to. Instead of loading the autorun file, it just opens up the window displaying all the files. Back in the day, I'd probably prefer this, but now I want it back to where it runs the autorun file.

Hi.

I work for an IT company and me and my boss are working on a VB.NET software which will manage several installers, sometimes we have to reinstall Windows and format computers, so the idea is to make a software that doesn't make us to execute several installers in order to install multiple softwares. The software needs to be the most automated as possible, according to my boss, so I was thinking about what if I could just insert the flashdrive and then our software starts installing everything it is supposed to?

The problem is that I don't know how to make the autorun.inf automatically execute my software from the pendrive, I even tried the following:

Code:
[autorun]
open=InstallManager.exe

Although when I insert the flashdrive Windows just pops a message saying what I'd like to do with the pendrive, it doesn't actually execute the software.

Sorry, but since the Conflicker incident, autorun from USB drives has been disabled in Windows. The only two keys that work in autorun now are label and icon.

I tried everything I know, but don't know what he did to disable this and he won't tell. if the device manager on the cd roms are checked to auto detect it should work. but they don't. can anyone help to activate this auto run sequense again. thank you, ron

I'm pretty sure I have set all the options so that the disks _ought_ to autorun but they won't. I have to go into Powerdesk (File Manager) and select a vob file.

I' installed a codec package but that made no difference.

I have had problems with this drive, Samsung TSST CDDVDW 288BB, in fact I've had to swap it out twice already. I'm wondering if it has gone yest again?

Hey people. As far as i can see this is quite a common problem. I've spent most of my evening in and out of safe mode and using different methods to delete the autorun.inf file that is in my external hard drive. However it keeps coming back. I don't want to take drastic action as my hard drive has a lot of important data which i don't want to lose.

I'm new to this, however i have downloaded HijackThis i just don't know how to use it.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks.

A:autorun.inf will not go away.

Ok i think i've got it while in safe mode instead of just deleting autorun.inf i opened up the file and saw that it called autorun.exe to open.

I deleted autorun.exe first then autorun.inf and it's seemed to solve the issue. Is there anyway i can verify this is off my system??

Hey guys. Yesterday i inserted my USB flash drive and my antivirus (avast) detected a malicious file. The file name was "Autorun.inf" . Could that be a virus? I feel like it is responsible for starting Autoplay when you insert removal drives. If it is a virus please tell me how to remove it. Thanks

A:autorun.inf help

autorun.inf can be a way that some worms launch their payloads when USB devices are inserted into a machine. Disabling autoruns is recommended.

Here's some info on autorun function

http://www.us-cert.gov/cas/techalerts/TA09-020A.html

Panda USB and AutoRun Vaccine

When autorun is disabled, you can still use USB devices...

Most AV will alert to an autorun.inf these days.

To help with removal, if in fact the USB device has caused an infection, we would require more information.

We want all our members to perform the steps outlined in the link I'll give you below, before posting for assistance. There's a sticky at the top of this forum, and a

link at the top of each page.

Please follow our pre-posting process outlined here:

Problem here seems to be same as that in post http://forums.techguy.org/malware-removal-hijackthis-logs/556776-autorun-vbs.html.

The only thing that I've noticed it does is disable opening the E drive through My Computer on Windows XP only. I have uninstalled Autorun. I also have removed the Trojan with mcafee. I have tried looking for autorun.inf with cmd, it was not located on the main directory of my flashdrive, but with so many different folders on it, it would take a while for me to fully check.

My questions:

Is autorun.inf still on my flashdrive?
Can I remove it from the school computer without cmd?
