Disk Drive stopped working after installing windows 7

Q: Disk Drive stopped working after installing windows 7

I installed windows 7, I'm only done phase 2 and I can't even start phase 3 because my disk drive doesn't work. When I load up My Computer I can see the drive, but when I put in a disk it disappears and I get a message:
"Storage Device Connected
A storage device was connected. If this device is a port multiplier, only port 0 of the port multiplier will be active."
From the Intel(R) Matrix Storage Console.
I've checked for driver updates, and reinstalled the driver.
The disk drive is WDC WD3200BEVT -22ZCT0

Please help me Seven Forums you're my only hope.

Is your drive actually not working or are you just getting that message?

There was an issue with that message popping up on occasion even though the drive was still working. Here's the fix for it, although there was an April update as well.

Here's teh april update and the older fix:

My disk drive stopped working on a BRAND NEW computer after I installed a program. I installed musicmatch 10 but vista kept saying stuff like "This program has been known to cause problems" or something like that, but it's been installed on plenty of XP machines. I though it might have been just another of Vista's stupid setup warnings, but I dont know what's going on.

Has anyone else had a problem similar to this?

A:Help!! Vista disk drive stopped working after installing

Hi and welcome to the forum. I believe that Musicmatch 10 is not vista compatible. Nothing to do with vista but with the makers of MMatch. However I found a work around which may help..let me know if it worked:

-right-click the Musicmatch program shortcut on your desktop and select properties
-go to the compatibility tab
-click the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" box, and select "Windows 2000" directly underneath
-also make sure that "Run this program as an administrator" under "Privilege Level" is selected
-not sure if it makes a difference, but I also clicked on "Show Settings for All Users" and made the same selections in the box that pops up
-click the musicmatch icon on your desktop (the one you set properties for) when you want to start the program, and when Vista brings up the "This program has known compatibility issues" box, just click "Run program" and Musicmatch should start fine!

Hi,
I have a vista computer, a while ago i tried to install some video camera software, which i did, but it said it wasnt compatable with vista, so i uninstalled it. Following that, my disk drive will not recognise when i insert disks, i phoned the pc world helpline and they told me to click/unclick a box, that sorted the problem (something about upper aqnd lower filters if i remember properly.

Yesterday i tried to install a program to allow me to view tv on my laptop (same laptop) and the same thing has happened, but i cant remember how to fix it,

i would be very grateful if anybody could help me fix it,
many thanks

I've got a HP G70 laptop and all the drives and ports stopped working.
It turns on fine, and I can connect through wifi but the disk drive, USB, Ethernet, ect.
No longer work. A storm came through and I'm sure that's the cause of my
missfortunes. Mostly curious if there is anything I can do besides replace mother board. I've reinstalled
drivers much to no avail

A:Hp G70 ports and disk drive stopped working

When you say "disk drive" do you mean the DVD Drive?

What operating system, please? XP, Vista or Windows 7? Do you know how to find Device Manager? (Right click 'My Computer' and choose 'Manage', etc) Do those devices appear in there?

Hi, about a week ago my disk drive has stopped working, when I go to my device manager it says "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)".

I tried this solution in notepad:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdr4_2K]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdralw2k]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdudf]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UdfReadr]

Saving it as fixcd.reg, saving as all files, and ANSI encoding.

I guess it did work! It just wast quick to show on my system!

Alright, I have a whole bunch of my music and videos on my external hard drive and I got a new Dell XPS 8300 yesterday. I had been using my external hard drive just fine for the past 1-2 yeas now with 2 different laptops, working fine. I plugged it yesterday to transfer all my music to my new computer and it seemed to be working fine. There was an error as the copy rate slowwed so I decided to delete and try again. I did that about 3 times and then decided to just copy the music album by album. Eventually, I don't know how it ended up happening, instead of the Hard Drive coming up as Seagate on the My Computer Tab, it started showing up as Local Disk: J on my Dell and Local Disk E on my laptop now. It doesn't matter where I plug it in. Not only that, it won't open when I try to open it. It will get 95% loaded and then just pause and stop responding. I'm completely lost.

My hard drive is Seagate 250 GB.

A:External hard drive stopped working, only shows up as Local Disk -- won't open

Hi, first I would run the Seagate diagnostics to check the hard drive is still healthy following this guide.

Identify the make of your hard drive and then use one of the links below to get the manufacturers diagnostic for ISO CD. Burn the image file to a CD, boot the PC with the disc in the drive and run the diagnostics. You first need to set the CD drive to 1st in the boot order in the Bios setup.

If you do not have an image burner use this free software to make the CD.

I'm using Windows 7 x64, Thunderbird 2.0.0.23.

I've long used Thunderbird without too many problems; then I installed Windows Live Mail (because I can search it using Windows Search).

Now, whenever I start Thunderbird, I get an error message about how it "Could not connect to the mail server imap.aol.com. Connection was refused." This happens even when Windows Live Mail is NOT running.

Windows Live Mail seems to work correctily. T-Bird is still set as my default mail reader.

A:Thunderbird stopped working after installing Windows Live Mail

SOLVED. There was a problem with the firewall. I removed the Thunderbird rule, let the firewall re-discover it, and now it's okay.

I got a new disk drive for my pc and as soon as I got it installed Windows 7 would no longer boot after the start up screen. The error I get says "Windows has failed to start. A new hardware or software change may be the cause."

I've looked up the error and I've tried starting it in safe mode which won't work, I don't have a backup to reset my computer to and the option it gives me to repair the computer works but it sits on the repair screen infinitely. The only option I have found left is to reinstall windows or use the repair disk, but the computer was unfortunately gifted to me and was gifted to someone else before me so there is no disk. I just wanted to know of any more options before I got but a new OS to save my baby.

A:New Disk Drive Stopped Windows Booting

If that hard drive containing Windows 7 came from another computer and was installed in your computer, it's not going to boot and work properly.
Windows 7 needs to be installed in the hard drive in the computer that it's going to be used in.

What's the brand name and model name and complete model number of that computer?

My wife discovered that her HP PC with Windows Vista would not let her install her newest version of Wordperfect from the installation CD. When she inserted the CD it did nothing. No noise, no spinning etc ..... Is it visable under "My Computer" and the Device Manager but it will not read nor write data.

I used Windows Explorer to try and view the contents of various types of CD's but again nothing happened nor was visable. I bought an external CD drive and while Vista detected that new hardware had been installed, it would not work either. I was able to install both the external CD drive and its' software on my Windows XP machine.

I ran read and write diagnostics against both drives successfully. At this point I am at a loss. I am guessing that the problems exists in Windows and not the CD drive itself. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi everyone, was hoping I could get some help here. I'm a pretty advanced user, so I've already done the usual troubleshooting and everything, but my problem persists. I have a 1TB external Hard drive that I've been using for like 6 months, I've never had any problems with it until now. It suddenly decided to stop working on windows. I've tried it on around 7 different windows PCs and laptops, ranging from XP to windows 8.1, and it doesnt work on any of them. It does, however, work perfectly well on Ubuntu. This has led me to believe that there is either a windows-specific virus on it or something. I have opened it up and connect it via SATA cable as well, so its not the casing. When the hard drive is plugged in, the light is on, and a new drive (Local Disk E) shows, but it should be called Touro, and I can't do anything with the drive. if I click on it, windows explorer freezes. When I open Disk Management, it sticks on "Connecting to Virtual Disk...." something, but never ever loads, but the second I take the drive out it continues to load and works normally. I have scanned the entire drive (took a day) and found no threats, so I am completely stumped. Basically, I either need someone to tell me the exact problem and a way to fix it (without formatting my drive), or alternative ways around it.
Thanks in advance

In the wake of the motherboard failure on the main gaming PC (I need a warranty replacement), I have enough leftover PC components, including a Micro ATX LGA 1150 motherboard, which can be used to build a new compact system to be used as a mid-range gaming PC for living room entertainment. While the primary PC is being fixed, I will be using this new build in its place for a while. I'm currently using an old Windows 7 HP desktop in which I have swapped an old ATI video card for a GTX 660. I want to reinstall the old ATI card in that one and retire it from mainstream PC gaming. (That old PC will go to my parents' house.) Then I will install the GTX 660 into the new build as well and the Windows 8.1 SSD in my mother PC will be transferred to the child PC. I will get an i5 CPU and a Micro ATX cube case to complete the build. Question is, since the motherboard to be used has the same chipset as the one in the mother PC, can I still keep the Windows 8.1 installation on that disk drive and activate it on the child PC? Or do I need to reinstall Windows 8.1? The Micro ATX motherboard is an ASRock, so it's a different brand than the ASUS motherboard.

I will be getting a copy of Windows 7 Professional to dual-boot with Windows 10. Windows 8.1 on another boot drive will soon be migrated to a new build and upgraded to Windows 10. The dilemma is since I will be switching between Windows 7 and Windows 10 quite often, I will need to install them both on the same disk drive. Apparently my PC does not like having two boot drives plugged in at the same time. Microsoft recommends installing the older OS first on a dual-boot PC, but it is technically possible to install Windows 7 on a new partition on the Windows 10 drive. The problem is if Windows 7 is installed this way and Windows 10 needs to be reinstalled, then Windows 7 may go down with it, rendering them both useless. But this is where the Windows 8.1 drive comes in. I could boot to that drive and conduct my normal activities on it while the other OSs are being repaired. If I use Acronis True Image WD Edition to create a disk image of Windows 10, could I format that drive, install Windows 7, then reinstall Windows 10 and restore it from disk image? Or is it safe to install Windows 7 on top of Windows 10 and if Windows 10 needs to be reinstalled, then all business as usual on Windows 7?

i've always had issues installing windows 7, the first time i used it i had this problem windows 7 installation cannot find drivers? i never fixed that problem.. but i dont know if i mentioned on that thread that i can install a clean install while Vista is running but cant do that option because i wanted to upgrade to 64bit to use my full 6 gigs.. i eventually gave up and bought a new hard drive (1 TerraByte!!! ) but i still had the problem so i settled with vista 64bit.

i recently realized i could install windows 7 64bit on it while it was running, bypassing the boot from disc problem and so i have.. but once i put my driver discs in to install for my graphics card/other devices i noticed i couldnt use the disc drive anymore (windows7 cant locate it, including the device manager).. i got my old hard drive still connected and the drive works just fine on it..

i've spent hours googling fixes but none seem to work.. this page Windows 7 DVD Drive Not Working Problem Missing Disappeared Error Gone Not Found Not Recognized in x64 and x86 | Capitalhead.com

So I bought this hard disk (Samsung 500gb ST3500) a year or two ago and then did the correct formatting so it could run on the mac. This summer I took it off my mac for about a month and now I felt like listening to Wilko's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and realized it was on the hard disk so I put it back on and now its not showing up? It was fine before.

I tried going in disk utilities and it shows up there so I verified it and although it didn't notify me for any repairments I still clicked on repair and it didn't help.Theres a lot more info there then just that album, a whole lot of great movies , tv shows and a big library of great music that I was looking forward to get back into, as well as a couple programs also plug ins for my ableton , so now I cant open up my projects either. So I really don't wanna format it.

Any help will be greatly appreciated , theres a lot of info on this hard disk.

Seasons Greetings Everyone

Here's my problem....
My son's computer stopped working after I installed IE 8 last night.

Here's the details at a glance....
He has Windows XP and uses IE 6, but for a long time he was having problems with the browser as it would not download anything, he would always get an error msg saying something like.. "IE cannot open this location.. blah blah".. the other problem was that the system took few hours to start the IE browser to connect to the internet.

So what we decided to do was to upgrade the IE 6 to IE 8 hoping this would fix the problem, but when I downloaded the IE 8 browser (with his FF browser) and installed it with all the updates successfully, it restarted the system, took me to the desktop and that's it. Even the desktop theme was gone and only showed the blue background with all the icons in it.

I tried to open the new IE 8 but it didn't do a thing.. the system just freezes forever.
I then tried to open some files and did not open anything.
I rebooted the system a few times to see if this would help, but it did not help, as I cannot still open the browser..
That's why I am not including a scan report here.

I do have HJT on the desktop of my son's computer and have not tried to scan it but other than that I am able to do NOTHING.

Please help at your convenience,
Thanks so much,

Missy

I have 2 year old, 200 gig Rock Mobile Disk that I have everything backed up to. We it was turned on you could hear and feal by touch that it was running, the light would go from red to green and through the USB port it worked fine. It now does nothing. When turned on you can't hear or feal it running, the operating light stays red.

I took it apart and with light type prob found that the switch, inside boards and what I belive to be the motor, with 4 soilder connections all had power. I know I didn't hurt anything wih the plastic light prob that sences vboltage. I have 3 questions for someone. Please note that we live in a morot home and travel full time, now in our 17 year. So taking something back can be a problem, or getting work done.

1. Can I have it reparied, or can the information be copied somehow. and by who where.

2. If I buy something new, say at Best Buy, can they get the information out and into a new system.

3. What would you recommened I buy this time, considering our life style and is there a system out there that would be repairable or some how not lose everything on the back up disk.

Thanks Nick

Hey,
I was wondering if anyone could help me?  I have been having a lot of issues with my computer and using the internet. I haven’t been able to stream videos (with the exception of youtube),  download certain programs and browsing sites is slow.  I remember my computer being fine until a window update but I don’t know if that’s a coincidence or not.  I have tired uninstalling windows explorer and system restore to no avail.

Hi,

Type services.msc in command prompt. In the services window find Recovery Service for Windows (This service comes only with hp products as a part of their pre installed softwares), right click on the service and go to properties make startup type as disabled.

find virtual disk service and make its startup type as manual. Click on recovery tab and make as

second failure > take no action

Hi all

Just wondering anyone could help me with this please? I used to use irish broadband, a friend's friend helped me connect that to a wireless router, which was all working fine, however i cancelled the irish broadband in May, and i think by then my wireless on my dell inspiron 6400 was still working once i turned on the laptop, i could view all the wireless connection available. i have Intel PRO/Wireless 3845ABG network connection built in.

Then in May i got meteor broadband to go, i installed that, which is working fine. however, since then, my wireless has stopped working, i tried to fix it for days, but could not get anywhere, which is very stressful because everything is turned on and enabled, i looked through trouble shooting and i ran ipconfig, but it says 'media state disconnected'. I rang meteor, and they told me to go to device manager, which i had ensure all card/connection is enabled. but maybe there is something else, im just not sure where to look and fix the problem. i installed meteor broadband on another laptop, which the wireless on that laptop is still working perfectly, only my Dell wireless connection is not

could anyone give me any advice please?

Really appreciated!

Hello there; first time posting here.

I recently accidentally installed 7zip that was bundled with adware, I uninstalled it and removed it with ADWcleaner and MBAM. I noticed that right after installing 7zip, my documentary on YouTube stopped making sound. This problem is only for Google Chrome, and affects all websites on Chrome. I googled this problem, but the only responses were to disable PepFlash. I did so, and that didn't work.

I apologize if this is in the wrong category or is too vague, I've liked to think of myself a safety freak when in it comes to computers, and this is the first time I've installed something bad in many years.

Edit: I uninstalled and reinstalled Flash and it is working now.

I have an Alienware M11x with Windows 7. This brand of Alienware laptops "does not" have a disk drive, so a windows 7 boot disk is useless even if I had one, which I don't. I tried to start up this laptop today and Windows will not load. it goes to startup repair, and startup repair will not fix the issue. So I don't know how to fix this issue and get windows 7 to load. Every tutorial I
find online say "use the boot disk." I don't have a boot disk, as I said this laptop doesn't even have a disk drive built in.

Haven't been here in a while, so I tried searching for solutions to this problem and couldn't quite find any that matched my situation. A few results came close but no cigar.

Anyway here's my problem: My DVD drive just won't read DVDs! It reads CDs just fine but just won't recognize DVDs. I've had this drive for a long time now and haven't really had a reason to try a DVD-ROM until recently since Elder Scrolls: Oblivion was released. All I can really add is that it WAS an e-machines desktop until I replaced the CPU, mobo, vid card, and RAM (long time ago). I've filled in my specs where they should be filled in so feel free to check em if you need to.

My second problem is that my CD R/RW drive suddenly stopped working after my sister burnt a CD. I was making one for her boyfriend immediately after and it just refused to work from there on.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

A:DVD Drive Reading CD but not DVD! CD R/RW Drive Suddenly Stopped Working!

lets troubleshoot:

- Update firmwares/drivers/Winupdates
- check teh media for physical damages (scratches etc)
- try burning with a CD-RW to test its not a bad CD batch you got
- disable all third party burning software (nero, roxio etc) and try test with WinXP's cd burning software
- open up the pc and check cables and such connected properly, reseat if needed
- try on another pc
- try this thread : http://www.techspot.com/vb/showthread.php?p=262352
- how long have you had it in service? it may have well died out...

My DVD/CD ROM drive has stopped working on me, a yellow exclaimation mark pops up in the device manager and it tells me that it cannot load the driver it is either corrupt or missing and try as I may I cannot find a new driver for it.
Also my I'm having the same problem with my SCSI/RAID host controller, my friend says that that is what controls my DVD/CD ROM drive. Same yellow exclaimation mark, same error message.

I already tried doing a system rollback but that didn't work.
I looked on the microsoft website, the emachines website (the computers manufacuter) and the properties box says the DVD/CD ROM drive is manufactered my standard CD ROM drives, which according to a google search is a fancy term for 'we don't know who built it' and the SCSI/RAID host controller says it was made by Unknown.

Anyway I hope you guys can help me.

My CD-ROM drive has finally stopped working for me altogether now.

At first, about 6 months ago, I noticed that the tray of the drive would just pop open for no reason at ramdom times. I did not think much of that, for I would just close it, and it would stay closed.

Then, it would remain open and not close at all. However, I found out that if I put a CD in the tray, any type of CD, it would stay closed. It could be an audio CD or a data CD, or even a CD containing a program.

Now, however, for whatever reason, the drive will not remain closed at all. Even when I put a CD into the tray and close it, the tray just pops open. No matter what I do, it will not stay closed. This means of course that it will not read a CD at all...the tray just will not stay closed. Eventually, I get the little box from Windows telling me that it can not read drive D (the letter for my CD-ROM drive.)

There is no driver installed for my drive. It is not the original CD ROM drive that came with my computer. Under Device Manager in Windows, my drive is listed as:

CD-ROM Drive/F5A

if that helps you at all. Under Properties for the drive, on the Settings tab, it does have this:

Target ID: 1

and then to the right of that, it has this:

Firmware Revision: B1.4

and on the Driver tab, it says this:

"No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device."

I don't know about anyone else, but I found this no help to me at all. As I said, this is not the original drive my c... Read more

the dvd driver is probably corrupt or incorrect. go into device manager (type device in search) and look for any unknown devices. If you find any could you use snipping tool to upload a picture of the device manager

Hi,

I'm using Windows ME on reasonably good PC and my floppy drive refuses to work. I put a disk in (I've tried several different disks) and when I click on the A: drive in Windows Explorer theres no activity from the drive and Explorer freezes for a couple of minutes before telling me to "insert a disk into Drive A".
I'm pretty sure Windows recognises the drive as it appears in the 'Device Manager' and says its working normally.

Does anyone know what I can do about it?

First thing I would do is shut down the computer, open the case and disconnect the drive's data cable. Leave its poawe cable connected. Turn on the computer and see if the drawer will open. If not, you probably have a dead drive.

Get back to us with your result.

I have a Gateway GT5432 desktop computer and the dvd drive has suddenly stopped working. I have looked in the control panel under device manager and determined it is listed as HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H40N ATA Device. It was suggested that I uninstall the device and restart the computer to allow it to be found and install the driver. It did find the device but the error message that came up was 'Device driver was not successfully installed'. DVD Drive still not working...Running Vista Home Premuim OS. What can i try next?

A:dvd/cd drive has stopped working

When you say the "drive suddenly stopped working", what exactly do you mean, could you give a bit more detail?

Did you try the fix from Microsoft prior to uninstalling/reinstalling the drive?

Yesterday, I left a post in this forum about moving data http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/758205-solved-what-best-way-move.html (solved-thanks guys). I now have all the data I need on my desktop from the old hard drive, so now all I have to do is burn it to a DVD. However, my drive has stopped working. When I try to access it, it comes up with the message in the screenshots below. I think it is a TSSTcorp TSH552D or some sort. It has always worked fine i the past, never had any issues with it so I think it has something to do with me putting the old hard drive in... but thats as far as my thinking takes me. I need to fix it!
Thanks

I am writing to John Will who was a moderator for a post of the same concern on 10/6/06. He was helping TXSGUY77 who mysteriously lost his CD drive. The same just happened to me after I had to restore my XP operating system due to blue screen. After I ran the Comcast CD twice, the CD drive no longer worked, and was no longer found as a removable device in My Computer. There was a "!" mark beside the Lite On CD drivers (E-machine drive) in Device Manager and the Repair Wizard gave me a Code 19 error. I installed a new drive and had same problems, drive did not work, got same message even though drive manufacturer was identified in Device Manager. A friend led me to this site and forum. John provided a fix that I have tried but I just don't understand and it is not working for me. I did create a file in Notepad called Fixcd.reg and named it exactly as directed. I then pasted all data from John's fix beginning at Regedit4 and down the page through the last HKEY_Local line and saved it as before instructed.

You need to change the txt format notepad file into and actualy .reg file. You can do this by opening My Computer, opening whichever folder the file is in (My Documents, in your case), then choose folder settings, Show tab, then uncheck "hide extensions of known file types". Now you will see the file as Fixcd.reg.txt. Remove the txt, and double click the file. After this, you can re-check the "hide extensions" box again, if you don't like seeing them.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop, running Windows Vista. The DVD drive is the factory drive.

I was watching a DVD when the Windows Media player froze. I thought it was a memory problem, so I closed the player and re-opened it. When I opened the player again, it didn't detect the disc in the drive. When I go up to My Computer, it says there is no disc. When I ejected the disc and put it back in, it didn't make the whirring sound that it usually does. I've tried rebooting as well, but it didn't help.

I'm not super handy at tech stuff, so I'm out of ideas. Help, please?

Hi Guys! I'm in a serious trouble
A few weeks ago I dont know what happened when I tried to turn my computer ON it showed an error before loading windows, "BOOTMGR Image is corrupt, the system can not boot". I tried to install Windows from CD but it didn't read CD, then finally I managed to install windows from USB flash drive.
Now after I have installed Windows 7 my DVD ROM drive is not working, and it doesn't show any response when I insert CD or DVD, it just doesn't do anything, doesn't show any error. Please help me, I don't know what to do, should I install some kind of driver or something?
Please help me! I would be very grateful!

I am running Windows 2000, my computer said that my disk was full, so I was deleting a bunch of music files Sunday night.

I must have deleted something else by accident because now my CD Drive will not recognize a CD, whether it be a audio or data CD.

I just keep getting the message: Please insert a disk into drive D:

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but that has not worked at all. The Device Manager says: This device is working properly.

I am not a computer techie at all, so if you wouldn't mind giving me simple directions I would really appreciate it!

My CD-RW drive stopped working several days ago, and I’m wondering whether it’s something I can troubleshoot or whether it’s beyond repair.

The drive tray opens and closes normally, but doesn’t recognize the existence of a disk when one is inserted. There is no sound of the disk spinning up nor any other sign of activity. The drive is original equipment on an HP-753n desktop computer running Win XP 2002 SP3, purchased in 2003. Burner software is HP RecordNow by VERITAS.

Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

I'm using a ThinkPad T41p running Windows XP Professional. The part in question is a Toshiba SD-R9012 CD-R + DVD.

Suddenly the CD/DVD drive's not working. Can't play anything on it, can't burn anything. Windows knows its there but there's an exclamation point next to the CD in Device Manager.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the driver. I've removed the drive from the computer and rebooted with and without it. When I ran the Access IBM onboard help stuff I got an error that said there was no driver for the CD-R.

When Windows scans for new hardware and tries to install the driver I get an error.

A:DVD Drive stopped working

Hi Hanish.

Did you check with the BIOS if the DVD ROM drive is still listed? If not listed there are two things probably had just happened. First the internal connector is loosing (need to go to hardware tech), second the drive had just died already. In the second case you need to install a new one or buy an ext DVD ROM Drive (if you badly need it).

Hi,
My CD drive has randomly stopped working and is no longer being displayed under my computer. I have recently installed the DivX player and believe that was when it stopped working. I tried the solution in a previous thread of the same name, but when clicking on the notepad file received this message:
"Cannot import ....The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor."
This is the solution from the previous thread:
"Fix for missing DVD/CD drives.

Create a text file with NOTEPAD containing the following data exactly as below and name it FIXCD.REG
You should have 3 boxes on the bottom in NOTEPAD.
1)Filename : fixcd.reg
2)Save as type: all files
3)Encoding: ANSI
If you do not change it from txt type to All files type, then the file will actually be fixcd.reg.txt, this won't accomplish the desired result

Double click on the file and say yes to the merge into registry question.

----------------------- Use text after this line, contents of FIXCD.REG -----------------------------

Recently my dvd drive has stopped working. The system recognizes the drive, it shows up, it spins when a disk is inserted, but it does not seem to recognize that the disk is there. Looking at the drive in Windows shows 0 files. This happens no matter what type of disk I insert, cd, dvd, music cd.

I've tried updating the drivers, says they are up to date. I uninstalled and reinstalled the drive, no change. I installed a cd drive from my old computer, same result. I bought a new dvd drive, same result. Cable connections checked.

I also tried updating the IDE Channel driver, and uninstalling and reinstalling. No change.

One thing that may or may not give a clue. If I leave a disk in the drive and then restart the computer, when it logs into Windows I can see the contents of the drive. The last time I tried that I was even able to run the game on that disk. However when I switch disks, or open and close the drive with the same disk, the problem returns.

I've searched the forums but haven't found anything else to try that may point to the problem.

OS = Windows XP

Hey, sorry if this is in the wrong section but I didn't see anything more specific to DVD drive stuff...

Here's my problem:
My DVD drive doesn't seem to work at all, the LED light won't even come on and the tray doesn't eject or close. It's like theres no power or something, although it was working fine a few hours before and then I went to use it again and it wasn't working.

I checked the connector from the power supply to the drive but its fine, i even switched my CD drive with my DVD drive connector and the CD drive still works, so i know its not the connector.

So has anyone had a similar problem or knowledge of this sort of thing? I've never had this happen before. Is this a symptom of a fried dvd drive? It made no weird sounds or anything before it went out...it just stopped working.

Thanks in advance

Edit: Forgot to mention its a "hp dvd writer dvd400i"

And it looks like i should have put this in "Other", oops.

You don't have to get the exact same brand do you? What kind of computer do you have?

You can type the word, dxdiag, in the Run box of the Start menu and click OK. Save the report and then read the text file. Look for "Disk & DVD/CD-ROM Drives" and it will show what you have although sometimes the names don't match the brand.

Both of my CD ROM drives on my computer have stopped working. I have gone into the device manager, and both devices have the yellow question mark next to them. I uninstalled both devices and restarted the computer. It recognizes the hardware on startup and attempts to start them, but then I get a message that says there was an error with the hardware installation. The Device Status says: Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

I have performed a registry mechanic to see if that would help, but nothing.

Hey guys. I have a problem. Yesterday, I was using SumatraPDF on my Sandisk 1GB Cruzer Micro flash drive to view a document on another flash drive. The document didn't open, so I closed SumatraPDF. Next thing you know, Windows XP reports a "Delayed Write Error" faliure noticed. I ignored it, thinking that maybe the computer was just being screwy. A couple of hours later, I wanted to use my Sandisk Flash drive. I tried to open some files on it, and they wouldn't open. Puzzled, I went to Windows Explorer to try to open the root of the flash drive, and it says "(drive letter of flash drive) is not accesible. Incorrect function". Long story short, after many hours of trying to remedy the problem, I found out after plugging it into a computer that runs Windows ME that the flash drive is still readable...just not writeable. I can't format it to try to remedy the problem, and I fear that I may have to get a new one (I've had it for over a year now, plus I used Portable Firefox/VLC Media player on it...). Is there a Sandisk utility that can force a format on this media or possible make it writeable? If not, is there a way to make it readable on Windows XP? Also, do you know of a place where it's possible to get a good 1GB flash drive at 30$ or less if I have to replace it?

A:Flash Drive Stopped Working

You could save everything thats on it, open "My Computer", right click on the Drive and choose "Format".

MAKE SURE YOU FORMAT IT FAT, not FAT16 or anything.

That ought to sort it out.

I removed the player and replaced it with a similar unit and when I started it also failed to install. I can't read or write a disc. I replaced the power and sata cables to no avail. Could I have a mother board controller problem, if so, is there a solution without replacing the MB? It is a Lenovo desktop with an A6 processor running W7.

P.S. I see a message in the Device Manager driver properties saying "windows cannot start this hardware because it's configuration info in registry is incomplete or damaged. (code 19)

A:Combo drive stopped working

Enable Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3) then power down to plug in the drive, start Win7 to see if it auto-installs a driver in the System Tray, click on animation if so.

If not run all rounds of Important and Optional Windows Updates with reboots, until there are no more when you Check for Updates. You might have a needed Performance Update relating to the drive in additon to a driver.

Let us know how this goes as there are other steps if these aren't sufficient.

A:CD Drive stopped working when I switched OS.

G'Day BigBen747,

Try this workaround for Non- responsive CD/DVD?s; it requires modifying The Registry.

Warning: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

Note: If you had installed multiple CD-writing software products on your computer, you need to uninstall the software products before you remove the registry keys.

Remove the Registry Entry

1: Click Start > Run > in the box type regedit > OK.

2: Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}

3: On the File menu, click Export.

4: In the File name box, type savedkey, and then click Save.

5: Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type UpperFilters > click Delete on the Edit menu > Yes.

6: Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type LowerFilters > click Delete on the Edit menu > Yes.

7: Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

Upon rebooting, all should be 'normal'.

Kind Regards,

If the CD/DVD appears in Device Manager with an error code associated with it, try the following solution.

Download CDgone, right click on the downloaded file and choose Extract All, then double-click on cdgone.reg Say "Yes" to the merge question and then reboot. See if the drives have returned. You may have to re-install CD burning applications, since they're the ones that tinker with the filter setting in the registry that caused the drives to disappear.

I set the jumpers so that it's the slave. This is an old Maxtor 20g drive. Put it in the computer, relocated the power plug from the existing hard drive(old 40gig maxtor) to the 20gig one, and put a free plug on the old drive, (the existing hard drive was in the slave position on the ATA cable, so I just connected the slave drive to the master position on the ATA, didn't think it was a big deal). Booted it up, and the usual whine of the hard drive isn't there. BIOS does not detect ANY drives.

I then remove the 20gig drive, and the restarted the system and same thing. Doesn't seem like it's getting power. At the same time, I had installed a DVD drive and tied up all 4 main power plugs.

Now, what might be happening here? I tried different power plugs with the same results...hard drive seems dead. I haven't tried JUST using the 20gig drive yet, since I ran out of time. I checked all cable connections to make sure they were tight.

Any ideas on what's going on? Is there a reset procedure somehow? Thanks in advance for your help!

I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 and my warranty just ran out The DVD-ROM stopped working. It is being recognized in the hardware profile with no issues. The drive will not open and when I open it manually and place software in the drive it does not see the cd/dvd. The drive is getting power...at least the light comes on . Any suggestions?

I have had an EZ Flash drive (memory stick) for just over a year which has suddenly stopped working. Normally, my computer sees it as soon as I plug it into the USB, but now it doesn't.
For a while I did get the computer to acknowledge that it was there as a removable drive, but it couldn't detect anything on it.
I've tried re-installing it using the installation disk, but to no avail.
Could it have become totally de-activated or wiped?
Even if all the files on it have been wioed, I can't see why it can't be detected.
I've checked the USB ports in Control Panel and they're all OK.
