Good Morning,

This SF Diagnostic tool is very useful, but failed to copy the .dmp file from the workstation with the issue. At first I thought that it could have been because I was running the tool remotely, so I proceeded to ask a person in the office to run it for me and we got the same outcome. SF Tool failed to copy the .dmp file. I found this strange so I went ahead and ran it on my own work laptop running windows 7 pro 64 and it completed as expected. Any ideas why this is failing? I have attached the .zip file to see where to go from here...

Make sure you are running the program from an Administrator account. You may also try right-clicking on it and selecting "Run as Administrator".

Hi guys,

My girlfiends computer has continous problems (its a HP) and her brother just bought this game "Lord of the rings, Battle Middle Earth 2" and it wont even install on the machine.
Ive formatted this pc a few weeks ago and it still has the same problems?? Most of the time to do with the cd drive its really wierd!

Anyway the problem im having with this game is, you intsert the disc, auto run runs, enter serial number and all the rest, then when the install indicator goes to 1% it fails to copy one of the readme.txt support files from the cd. It gives u the option to retry, or cancel. Cancel, will cancel it all together, retry does nothing except bring up teh box again.
So, I tried exploring the cd and dragging it onto the desktop or something and it wont even do that!

The HP computer is 3ghz, 1gb ram, win xp, plenty of room on hdd. Thanx for any help in advance guys.

Matt

A:Lord Of The Rings wont copy the first file when installing!

I think you may want to check the game box and see if it's the DVD version... and if it is, then that's the problem if your girlfriend's machine has only a CD-ROM player...

Just a thought I know that the first one came out on DVD-ROM format as well as CD-ROM format.

I'm currently in the process of copying files back from the cloud in the exact same location where I had them before and now it says that the file name is too long and prompts to see whether I want to skip the file or not. The error message given does not
give the full file name or the path so it is impossible to see which files were copied successfully or not. This never happened with XP! Then afterwards I found that some of the files with long names did copy successfully whereas others didn't. I find this
to be a very user unfriendly process and I'm totally confused! These are critical files and I'm sure I haven't exceeded 260 characters or whatever. This is soOoO frustrating!!

C

A:file copy error message not sufficient + file name too long will not copy

Hi ,

There is a limit of filename length within Windows Explorer. In the Windows API (with some exceptions discussed in the following paragraphs), the maximum length for a path is MAX_PATH, which
is defined as 260 characters.
The shell and the file system have different requirements. It is possible to create a path with the Windows API that the shell user interface is not able to interpret properly.
This means that your long filename can only be handled at the command prompt level and you cannot drag and drop an illegal length filename within Windows Explorer.

Please simplify your folders and titles.

More information, please check the part of Maximum Path Length Limitation in the link below.

My dads updates keep trying to install Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool but it fails each time and the update sits in the tray???

why is this?

he also seems to have problems with updates mostly comodo and firefox have caused crashes

A:Windows Software Removal Tool wont install??

The MSRT update isn't a necessary update, especially if you have a full-time antivirus program running in the background and you run a scan with anti-spyware programs(such as Lavasoft Ad-Aware 2007 and Safer Networking Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.5.2) on a regular basis.

Microsoft releases new critical and recommended updates like clockwork on the 2nd Tuesday of every month. If you turn off the automatic update feature and then do a manual scan for new updates on the 2nd Wednesday or later of each month, you can take control of the update feature. Select the "Custom" option because this allows you to select which updates you want to install.

A:PC wont detect windows 10 copy

Hi I am not sure what you done, but the PC is trying to boot and load from the network, it is looking, via ethernet, for a DHCP way to boot and load an OS.   May be you need to change the BIOS boot order. So the copy of Windows 10, USB or DVD, needs to be in a port/device that is the primary boot device, and disable network booting, either by removing the ethernet cable and/or disable wake on LAN in the BIOS. AND you can obtain a 'spare' copy of W 10 from here (https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10) but you will need to activate it either from an earlier install or by key, which is an .iso and will burn to DVD or USB. If in doubt please ask.

Hi All
I have a rather large file system with lots of folders & subfolders. When I want to save previously on Xp operating system I'd search in explorer open the folder I want then copy the address (e.g c:\customer records\client name\job address).
In windows 7, when I copy the folder address i get this "search-ms:displayname=Search%20Results%20in%20electronic%20files&crumb=location:S%3A%5CSEQ%5C011_Estimating %5Celectronic%20files\CHERMSIDE , 17 smith ST"

As you can imagine I cant paste that into a save as field and expect it find the folder location.

Does someone know if it can do what I want? keeping in mind this is about time saving and productivity exercise so I need a simple solution. It is also on a work computer so a lot of settings are locked.

Appreciate any help

A friend of mine is asking for help and I am powerless since I do not have windows vista so I thought about you guys! There is the problem:

with Windows Vista , in Windows Mail, if you've sent too large a file, you've got trouble. the mail server is not microsoft (Hotmail or MSN)
It won't send, but keeps trying to send, it won't delete in any conventional and non conventional method and although there is an update to handle this issue, it isn't applicable to our Vista machine, as it's about eighteen months old, therefore a dinosaur in the world of technology.

She does'nt want to download or create another email server that would require changing her email address. She downloaded Incredible because she CAN retain her email address, and will use it until she find a way to get that sent file that won't go deleted from Windows Mail.. Can you help? Thanks

A year ago, I spent several hours in front of the computer installing: Windows 7 64 bit OS; MS Office 2012; and a several other programs we use almost daily. When finished, I did all the updates, activations, etc .. so I had a perfectly setup – but UNUSED system at this point.

The next thing I did, was backup the C Drive with Acronis True Image 2009.
Since then Ive acquired about 2TB of backups. – God, I hope they are not all useless!

Two weeks ago my system was getting slow and stupid – so I figured rather than reloading OS and all of my software, I’d just reload the Image I made a year ago.

After reloading the image (a week ago) Ive had no success. Here are the main problems Ive ran into

Hi all,

I just finished installing Windows 7 Ultimate X64 on an Asus motherbord, i5 intel. I was checking the root folder my C:\ drive, and I realized that besides the standard folders (Program Files (x86), etc.) there is a file called bootsect.exe

Why is this there, and can I delete it?

1) I used Acronis 2014 to wipe my SSD drive (fast)

2) Installed Windows 7 by choosing the advance option (not the upgrade)

When I look at my hard drive structure via the Disk Management, I do see the proper (and hidden) 100MB NTFS System Reserved partition, *in addition to* my regular OS.

Is there anything wrong with this then?

Thanks for your help.

Hello:

Windows 8 has a Control Panel tool called Windows 7 File Recovery Tool. You can use this for backups and there is a great option to backup your system configuration. In case the hdd ever fails, having the system configuration on a network drive or other device is very convenient.

I don't do data backups anymore. Instead, I use File History to mirror my computers and laptops on a NAS device.

I have about 6 PCs on a home LAN and each have their data replicated on a network drive, using File History. I use Windows 7 File Recovery tool to replicate the system configurations of each PC in case I need to recover from a hdd failure. I have 3 questions:

(1) Is my model of replicating data an effective model for backing up my data? Any problems with my approach?

(2) Is there an easy way (besides xcopy or robocopy) to backup configuration info such as Favorites, Desktop items, etc.?

(3) One of my PC's is running Vista. Is there an easy way to include this PC in my backup strategy? RIght now, I am using xcopy and robocopy to back it up to my network drive.

Somehow the ASK Toolbar installed itself on my comp – unbeknownst to me.
I did uninstall it – but for some reason it has left a trace behind.
My Windows XP now hangs on Start up with a warning that it cannot find a file. Windows will not continue until this is acknowledged.
I immediately went to ‘Your Uninstaller’ and deleted this file from the start menu. I did the same in ‘msconfig’.
However – it comes right back into ‘Your uninstaller’ and will not be deleted.
I have tried ALL the normal things to delete this – but tot no avail – including several scans for spyware etc etc .
It looks as if I will have to re-install Windows – but hope this will not be needed.

I cannot contact or find help from Ask Jeeves.
I cannot find this file in ‘system 32’ Folder.
I’m sure I will need something radical to get rid of this with the help of someone very experienced.

Hey,

I downloaded a Windows 7 (x64) ISO file with my MSDNAA license.
I want to create a bootable Windows 7 on my USB flash drive to install it on my new laptop.
However, after I selected the ISO file and click on the "Next" button I got an error message: "Invalid ISO file - The selected ISO file is not a valid ISO file. Please select a valid ISO file and try again."

If I extract the ISO file with 7-Zip, it creates a readme.txt containing following text:
"This disc contains a "UDF" file system and requires an operating system that supports the ISO-13346 "UDF" file system specification."
It also creates a folder called [BOOT] with a "Bootable_NoEmulation.img" file.

Can anybody help me or at least explain me why I'm not able to create a "Windows 7"-USB flash drive?

If this information is useful: Windows 7 x86 is running on my computer.

Thanks a lot,

Daniel

No worries, it is easy enough to create a USB installation key.

I use method 2, because it is the fastest.

You will need to mount the ISO using a third-party program such as MagicDisc, then drag-n-drop the files to your prepared USB drive.

Many a time we need to replace a system file to do some resource modification. As you many know, by default, Windows doesn’t allow you replace a system file easily. You need to take ownership of file first and then need to replace it with another file. To avoid this cumbersome task, here is a small named Se7en File Replacer that does the same job for you.

As the name suggests, it helps you replace a Windows 7 system files with ease. Download, extract and run the file to start replacing your system files. The program backups the old file first and then will replace it with the new file. You can either manually select a file or drag a file to the replacer’s box to replace the old file.

The Replacer will first look in the "system32" folder for a match with your new file, and if the old file is found it will be backed up and replaced without prompt, otherwise you will be asked to select it manually.

Hi, I'm trying to get a Windows 7 Starter ISO and on the Dell page here, it tells me I have to modify a Selected Win7 ISO that they already provide.

So I download one of the ISO's (Home Premium 32-bit, because it's on a 32-bit OS). Once the ISO has finished downloading I follow the steps Dell gives me, on how to make the ISO a Win7 Start ISO.

I open the ISO with an Archiver and unpack the ISO. Then I navigate to the "Source" folder and open up the file "ei.cfg" in note pad and change Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate to Starter. Once that is done, Dell doesn't tell you how to put it back in a ISO.

So I Googled how to make an ISO. Basically from my understanding, you just put all the folders you extracted from the ISO, back into a RAR file. Once they're all back in a RAR file, you install a Image burning software (mine is PowerISO) and then make the RAR file into a ISO Image. With PowerISO, all I have to do is: right-click my RAR file and navigate to PowerISO and then click "Add image to file". Once you have done that, PowerISO asks you what kind of image? ISO, bin, or daa? I choose ISO. PowerISO then makes my ISO File.

After that is done, I try to use it in Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool and it says it's an invaild ISO file. Why is that?

However, even though I can find the .tmp file, I cannot do anything with this .tmp file -- Windows XP won't let me rename it, won't let me copy it, won't let me move it, etc. Does anyone here know of a way that I can copy this type of .tmp file to another folder on my harddrive and then be able to rename it, play it, etc.?

I've noticed that when I copy large video files to my external drive, sometimes while editing there is missing data in a random frame. When I check the original file on the storage card straight from my camera, the data is intact. Sure enough, an MD5 checksum
shows that while most of the files copied just fine, quite a few don't match the verification.

I dismissed this at first as my drive having physical problems, so I ran diagnostics like CHKDSK and looked into some new drives to replace it. Turns out, it has been happening on almost any external hdd I try to copy to, and I just never noticed it until recently!
Thankfully I found this thread:
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/13a7426e-1a5d-41b0-9e16-19437697f62b/windows-7-64bit-corrupting-altering-large-files-copied-to-external-ntfs-drives?forum=w7itproperf
It seems that this was actually a widespread problem (whew, I'm not crazy). What's troubling is that they never determined the cause OR confirmed a solution! That thread is now closed and locked so I can't comment on it, but here I am still having this exact
problem!
In that thread, they say Teracopy can be used an alternative to the Windows copy to make sure everything works OK. TC seems to not have this bug somehow, and on top of that it also supports MD5 checksum verification in case I'm still nervous. Problem is,

Hello everyone,

I've been having a terrible time trying to diagnose and fix corrupted system files. I have recently updated to windows 10 during the free upgrade process. I was running Windows 7 Pro before I updated.

I have tried sfc /scannow command multiple times, in safe mode and in normal operation.

Every time I get this message:

"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some
of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not
supported in offline servicing scenarios."

So researching online, I found that using the DISM tool will fix this issue.

However every time I run the command, I get this:

"Error: 0x800f081f

The source files could not be found.
Use the "Source" option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature. For more information on specifying a source location, see Configure a Windows Repair Source.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log"

I've even tried mounting the windows 10 iso that I downloaded from the media creation tool and running it again, however I still get the same message to no avail. I've seen other forums with users saying to use the original windows 10 iso and not to use the iso created by the media creation tool. However I can't seem to find this file and am not sure it would work anyways.

Hello All -
I inherited a Windows 7 machine because it 'has issues'. I started from scratch and reloaded Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 32x Ver: 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601. It works well except it regularly freezes (i.e. It has no recognition of the mouse or keyboard) randomly: either while Windows 7 is loading (stops at logo screen) or can happen any time while in use. This also occurs when the computer is left ?on? or in ?power down? (sleep) mode overnight. I have learned, *if it freezes while booting*, this works: Hard shutdown, reboot into Safe Mode then do only a "Restart" and it works fine. Until another random freeze.

I've checked my RAM: All is fine
Check Disk: No Problems

Does anyone have thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks for taking a look at this post.

Hello. I am going to ask a question. I could ask this same question in the Windows 7 forum as well. I'll start with this Windows Vista forum because the question because the function for what I am about to ask is the same in both Windows 7 as in Windows Vista. Since Vista has been around a bit longer, users and experts here may know more. This concerns System File Checker (SFC) tool within Windows operating systems. I know with Windows XP, you can use SFC in combination with Windows File Protection to repair many Windows files. I know it needs to reference the Microsoft factory CD-ROM of Windows XP to access files within the disk, especially the I386 folder. I understand that Windows Vista & Windows 7 integrate the System File Checker within the Windows File Protection. When you run SFC at a command prompt in Windows Vista & 7 with administrator access (type: sfc /scannow), you do NOT need the Microsoft factory DVD-ROM. It is an internal process in Windows Vista or 7 that functions on its own. I have a question: Is there a way to get Windows Vista or 7 TO HAVE TO USE THE FACTORY DVD-ROM like in Wndows XP when you want to manually run SFC tool? What needs to be done? Any registry changes (I would think there is where it would be done.)? Add a script? Programs to install?

Any thoughts, opinions, or facts are appreciated.
Please provide detailed steps that are elementary to understand, especially if modifying the registry.

Thank you!

I just found this program this morning, it is supposed to be able to recover data from a failed hard drive, by-passing the OS, using a sector by sector approach.

HDDGURU: HDD Raw Copy Tool

It sounds promising, but has anyone here used it?

A:HDDGURU - HDD Raw Copy Tool: any users?

Though this program seems to have been on board since atleast March 2010, there seems to be very little information by way of expert reviews/user reviews. Even in CNets's download.com there is not a single user review.

I could get a small video review here HDD Raw Copy Tool Video Review - HDD Raw Copy Tool Video Trailer - HDD Raw Copy Tool Screenshots

May be someone here - who actually needs data to be recovered - should try and report. A mock trial can only be a second best.

Looks to be a promising program using which one can make a sector to sector copy of a battered HDD to another good HDD and try recovery on it, keeping the original HDD unscathed. ( More often when one tries Data Recovery using various Data Recovery tools, the chances are that one can muck it up further and stress it further.)

I was wondering how reliable the file copy function in Windows is, for example does it just copy, or does it do a "copy & verify" to be 100% sure the copied data exactly matches the source?

Basically, is it reliable enough to use it to make a backup copy of a hard drive with no doubt that every bit in the copy matches the source?

Since I don't know if it does a copy & verify I've been using a program that does copy and verify, but does the Windows copy do this too?

Thanks

Hi

My names Tom. I currently need a tool that can search a hard drive for at least 18 different files at a time, copy them to a different location and rename them. The reason for me needing to this is that i am making hundreds of compilation albums out of 40,000 + tracks, so a tool like this would make my life a lot easier! If there are several tools that can be used i would be very grateful if you could tell me what they are.

Hi,

I'm really struggling to find a solution to this. I have a music collection 260gb which has a mix of codec's mp3, flac, wav, mp4.

I need to pull out all the flac files and move them to a new drive keeping the original folder structures on the new drive, as they are by artist/album and I have way too many to do this manually..

It's driving me mad

Any thoughts?

I'm confused about something.

On my home PC, to backup my own files [files I create or download], I always select the parent folder(s), click copy, and then paste it to the backup destination, usually a usb flash drive. This seems fast and simple--a no-brainer, perfectly suited for me.

But some people use a backup tool. What's the reason for this? Is it for more complex backups or something? Or does the backup tool compress/archive/whatever the files, to change their format?

Thanks for info!

Windows encountered a problem when trying to copy this file

I keep getting this error message when trying to copy files from a USB drive onto my new PC running XP x64 - I copied the files onto a PC running XP Home just to see if it could be done, and it worked OK, but not on to the XP x64 PC.

I then zipped all the files onto my new pc, and wanted to burn a DVD of the zip, and got the same error message.

I unpacked the zip onto the c drive of my new pc, and tried to copy just one single image (jpg) to a different location - i got the same error again.

Hello everyone. I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite with Windows 7 installed. I have never used 7, and upon copying files from an external drive to the C: drive I encountered an error stating that one of the folder names was too long. It gave me a couple of options, and I chose "skip." Unfortunately, it doesn't seem that it just skipped the folder. I can't find it anywhere, either on the external drive where I had copied it from or on the C: where I was trying to copy it. If anyone has any idea where these files are I would greatly appreciate it, as I could not find a temporary location or anything else of that sort.

Hi

Ok, this has bugged me for a while now. About 3 months ago, with my college computing class we attended a lecture/presentation from the guys at Kapernsky in which they showed us some basic tools for securing, and monitoring your own system. I remember them using programs like OllyDBG - but they also had this little software application (btw they told us all of the utilities they were using in the demonstration were available free online!) that monitored the copying of files, deletion of files, edits to the registry, starting/stopping services, running other exe's and opening new webpages.

In the demonstration they ran a 'malicious' installation package and this little log program ran beside it; once they had finished installing, they brought up the log screen and it showed that some services had been started, and where the virus had been installed.

Just wondering if any of you guys may know what this software is called? Links would be great!

Many Thanks

A:Windows Log Software - File Copy, Execute, Delete etc

I'm not sure what programs Kaspersky Lab uses in their demonstrations.
I am aware of Sysinternals suit, which has a set of free useful utilities with huge potential to trace viruses and things like that.
I have seen a video of Mark Russinovich (author) using this suit to do that. This guy works for MS now.

Update: In some of the Kaspersky Lab's slides it is possible to see Process Explorer by Sysinternals and another program Wireshark (Linux version).

Hi Belj, Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP Pavilion g6-1305sa Notebook and not able to restore Windows. If the HDD is faulty this might cause the restore not to go well. You might try to run a hardware test.  Please note remove any and all USB devices, and remove memory cards from the card reader slot. Disconnect all non-essential devices. Is this the original HDD? Have you replaced any other parts? Have you tried to do a clean install of Windows 7. Try running sfc /scannow would scan your system for errors at the command prompt. You can get to the command prompt by clicking F11 at startup. You could check this Microsoft document on system recovery options. Hope this is a help. Thanks.

We are some people who thinks that it would be nice, in order to understand our customer needs, to know why Windows / explorer / Kernel OS systems have this MAX_PATH LIMIT. 255 equals 8 bit. I am not sure if this is the right comparison.

A:File name too long cannot copy (8 bit Windows 7 Enterprise (64bit)? :-)

Windows 2000 has a 254 character limit.

Windows XP has a 255 character limit.

Windows Vista and Windows 7 has a 260 character limit.

Exceeding either will result in the error mentioned.

So, to solve this simplify your folders and titles

I have a laptop that I am working on when I go into the Add/Remove programs I then go into windows compoonents and pick the ones I want to add. It then prompts me to insert the Windows XP 2 service pack CD. saying unable to copy files

The funny thing is I have the windows XP install files right on C\windows\I386.

This was bought with Windows XP SP2 Preloaded.

I also have tried another Windows XP SP2 CD with no success. As well I tried an original XP CD for grins with no help there either.

I have tried this as local admin/domain admin/user with admin rights, so I know its not a profile thing. I have tried multiple types of media and HDD and CD installs so I know its not location of the files.

Also this happened before it was joined to the domain so I know its not any domain specific setup I.E GPO's or anything of that nature.

Any other thoughts on why this is giving me this problem.

The file it won't copy changes depending on what I am trying to install from the windows components... but some of them are SNMPMIB.DL_ EVNTAGNT.DL_ among others.

My PC has a separate drive with recovery stuff on it, but the drive files on it must be compressed or coded so they cant be searched for individually, it just says "recovery" or ND-tree or soemthing like that, so that wont help, nor do I wish to do a restore, as the last time I did that, it overwrote a ton of stuff in My Documents and I lost stuff (and that was a restore, not a format), anyway, thanks in advance if anyone can solve this.

When I use Explorer on Windows 8.1 to copy multiple FLAC files to a folder on the SD card of my Nokia Lumia 625 (running on Windows Phone 8.1) via USB, a dialog window pops up in Explorer, asking me to choose between converting and just copying. If I choose to just copy, a progress bar appears, and it always gets stuck at the end of the first file transfer so I have to cancel or close the progress window, and, as a result, only the first file is transferred. If I copy a single FLAC file instead of multiple ones, the same thing happens at the end of the file transfer. So I am forced to copy the files one at a time, and I have to close the popup window for each of them. Is there any way to solve this?

A:Copy file to Windows Phone, disable autoconversion dialog?

My 8.1 Lumia 928 doesn't prompt for file conversion. Going from Windows 8 Explorer, it just warns that it may not be compatible and then gives you the option to bail out of the copy. Maybe the phone app you are using to play FLAC files is giving you the prompt to convert and then has a problem with them.

Which app are you using to play FLAC files on your phone?

This is an HP laptop running vista and I use windows internet explorer as my web browser
OK this is a crazy one, I tried to make a copy of my favorites list for backup if the computer crashed in the future. And it seems that not only did I copy the list but also took away my ability to now use the favorites buttons on the windows internet explorer bar, here is the message I get

C:\Users\Janie\Contacts\Favorites\Favorites\Favorites\Favorites refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be
on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that your are connected
to the Internet or your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been
moved to a different location.

The favorites button still appear but they are empty and do not function at only recceiving the above message everytime I click on it

I found the list located under documents then onto files, I sent the favorites file to the desktop for quick access but it is still easier to use it back when it was attached to the and or working in the toolbar, I think it also copied onto a DVr I put in the machine when I was trying to copy it, and when I insert that DVr it shows up in the list below folders as in an E drive
Is there somee way I can get it back and running on the toolbar?
Thanks for looking and any help you can offer.

Hi,
Install windows 10 and confirm activation as suggested in forums. Downloaded Windows Media Creation Tool to create fresh reinstall. Ran it to create 64 bit ISO. Now using the ISO to reinstall windows 10. At 30% restore, it failed. I tried various recovery. Even did chkdsk on drive c with /r and also with /f. Same problem again - failure at about 30% restore.

Reading in forums, I discover Refresh Windows Tool(exe). Downloaded and ran it (tool) to download Windows 10.
What I dislike. No Pause or ability to use a download manager. When this download of about 3gb is done, where is it saved? How to use? Yea, automatic for I still have prior install files (programs, data folders, etc) which means nothing was done. Did restart hoping for a fresh reinstall - no changes. Thus I am posting in this forum with paragraph 1 (media tool) and Refresh tool (paragraph 2).

Went into BIOS startup and told it to use DVD (boot order priority), but instead window normal login was done and given. Thus, use window recovery within to execute the ISO.

I'm in the process of repair/recovery of my machine (Dell Inspiron 8500 with Windows XP Home, Service Pack 2). I'm following exactly the instructions in: http://attachments.techguy.org/attac...chmentid=62075, but a problem has developed. The "software" file (which is the file that the original blue screen error message says is "corrupt, absent or not writable") will not copy to the new tmp directory to create the backup. My understanding from the article is that this backup file (software.bak) will later be used to restore correct settings for various software applications. Since I can't copy it, it appears that I am screwed, no? Or is there a way out somehow?

Never mind, I had it wrong--didn't read the document referred to above carefully enough. The procedure worked like a charm, and the document is very easy to read and entertaining to boot! (pun intended).

The document describes a procedure that closely follows a Microsoft KB document (which I now can't find) but does not contain any warning regarding whether the OS is an OEM (original equipment manufacture) install or not. The Microsoft doc says not to use the procedure on an OEM-installed OS, but I just did it on my Dell, so that warning seems to be incorrect.

A:Error copying file or folder; cannot copy img the directory or file cannot be created

This has caught me more than once.

The problem is a limitation on the number of files and folders allowed in the root folder of a FAT16 file system (as for a memory card) of 512. (Note, this number is reduced much further if longer file names than 8 characters are used, as most people will want to).

When transferring the files onto the card, new files will be rejected when you hit this limit.

So keep your files in separate folders, so they are not all in the root folder.

For files and folders in root it might be worth keeping your filenames under 8 characters in length so you can use the full 512 files on root folder.

I would like to create a .bat to copy files from source folder to destination folder.
Some files in source folder already exist in destination folder (Same name)
What I would like is that files existing in destination folder to be rename to f.eks filename_BAK.extension.
Eksampel.:
Source folder include. FileOne.asp - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt
Destination folder include. FileOne.asp - (NO FileTwo) - FileTree.txt
Result. FileOne.asp (version from source)(Existing renamed to FileOne_BAK.asp) - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt (version from source)(Existing renamed to FileTree_BAK.txt)
Now in desination folder.: FileOne.asp - FileOne_BAK.asp - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt - FileTree_BAK.txt
Files in source folder are placed in different folders, but in same structure in destination.

Hello. There is a good guide HERE on using the SFC and solving issues relating to it. Make sure you backup the registry before making any changes to it.Can you please specify exactly what "services" were disabled? I assume you had used msconfig or service.msc. Did you get an error when you tried re-enabling them? With Regards,The Panda

When I use the XCopy command in Windows 2000, I can copy any file I like; however, when I use copy-and-paste or drag-and-drop in either Windows Explorer or PowerDesk, I get the following error:

Cannot Copy File: Cannot Read from the Source File or Disk

I searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base and came up with only one article, Q224378. This article seems not to apply to my situation because it applies to Windows 2000 Server. I am running Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 2. I did attempt to install the fix that article Q224378 suggested anyway; but, I got an error message that I was attempting to upgrade a program that didn't exist on my system.

I have also learned that this error applies when copying from either of my SCSI CD-ROM drives, not when copying from hard disks or floppies.

Any Suggestions?

I have Windows XP-Pro SP2 installed on a P4 1.8GHz CPU with 768MB RAM

I would like a script that opens a commamd window and calls for a file (icon file) to be copied to a specific folder on 5 different drives. I would like to be able to either paste in the file path or drag and drop the file onto the command window. The icon file will always come from the same folder "C:\WINDOWS\system32\00 ICONS\System Folders" and be copied, sometimes replacing a file with the same name, to these 5 folders:

"W:\WINDOWS\system32\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"X:\0 aAPPS\00 a Install First\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"W:\WINDOWS\system32\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"N:\0 aAPPS\00 a Install First\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"D:\0 aAPPS\00 a Install First\00 ICONS\System Folders"

I apologize if I am using incorrect terms. I don't know if a batch file could do this or if it would have to be done with vbs. I would appreciate the help. I know nothing about writng vbs script and only a little about writing batch files.
Thank you.

Hi Guys,

I want to make one batch file which daily copies yesterday's files from one folder & paste it to another folder.

I.e.
C:/111 folder has following files.
1.zip had yesterday's date
2.zip had yesterday's date
3.zip had last sunday's date

now, when i will run batch file today, it only copies 1.zip & 2.zip & move to another folder C:/222

So C:/222 contains following
1.zip had yesterday's date
2.zip had yesterday's date

Please note , i have to run this batch file daily which should not require any changes.

Does anyone know how to write a script that would specifically
copy a file "File.ext" to the clipboard and paste it to this
"My Script.vbs" file?

I do not mean editing the VBScript file. I currently right click
"File.ext" select "Copy" then right click "My Script.vbs" and
select "Paste".

I would like to know if I can do that with a script. I have included
an example of the code used in "My Script.vbs" I have chosen these

I have noticed lately that my computer seems to take an excessively long time to boot up completely - almost 5 minutes. Also when clicking on desktop icons, they seem to also take much longer to load. Windows Explorer (the folder and file management tool, not to be confused with the browser Internet Explorer) is agonizingly slow to rename and open folders and files, sometimes taking close to 2 minutes just to open a 56 KB file. I have done all the usual things like running a virus and spyware scans (I have AdAware, Spybot, Malwarebytes and ATFCleaner, CCleaner as well as my ISP's Computer Associates Antivirus, Firewall and Spyware protection installed), emptying temp files and recycle bin and defraging the hard drive and I've unchecked "Automatically search for Network folders and printers". I also did a chkdsk scan and a system restore to before when the problem started. Nothing seems to help the slow response, especially when working with folders and files through Windows Explorer. I have not downloaded or installed any programs recently (only AdAware, Spybot and CA updates), but I did have a new power supply and a new cable modem installed recently. Even the tech that installed the new power supply said he was concerned at how long it took for my computer to boot up, however he only repairs hardware and could offer no suggestions as to what the problem is. If it's any help in diagnosing my problem, my system is an HP Pavilion 750n with a 1.6 GHz Pentium 4 proce... Read more

I have lost the ability to save using the snipping tool on some machines on my network. You can draw a box around items on the screen but you cannot then get a dialogue box when you click to "save". It also doesnt present a dialogue when you select "save as" either but I can forward the screenshot as an email or copy to clipboard and paste into mspaint.

I have run process monitor and is does not show any problems. I have also tried sfc /scannow which doesnt fix the issue.

I have read that it can be caused by moving the Pictures folder that snippingtool automatically looks for but it currently works on my own machine using UNC paths to my roaming profile but not on a second machine as either local admin account without roaming or my own account with roaming.

I have tried moving the folders around so maybe that isnt it. I reimaged my machine to get it working with my roaming profile and that fixed it but how long it stays fixed remains to be seen. There aren't major changes between what was on there before and after and I have a few support calls requesting that it is fixed. It isnt acceptable to fix this issue by reimaging every machine on the network. I need to find a fix so I can adjust it with a login script or using sccm.

Any help would be excellent. Using Vista Business with SP1 here.

This is my first post on this website as I have run into quite a problem. Recently I was infected with a TDSS redirect virus and my efforts to remove it with microsoft security essentials/ microsoft defender offline were unsuccessful. So after reading a good deal about the virus on line, a PC mag article linked me to the symantec website (http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2010-090608-3309-99) which had a download for a TDSS virus removal tool. After more research I decided to download the tool and try it out. I downloaded it and ran it ... it stated that my computer was infected and then that it had cleaned it. I resumed a scan which showed no problems and resumed my normal activity. Great! However, not 20 minutes later, my computer was struck with a Blue Screen of Death and it restarted.

It jumps to a screen that says "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause" I am given the options of launching startup repair or starting windows normally (which doesn't work). Launching the startup repair only results in stating that my computer has a problem which cannot be fixed and tells me to contact the system administrator or computer manufacturer to fix the PC. Then it gives me the option to shut off.

Also important to note: I actually had the BSoD and Windows failed to restart before I had used the TDSS killer when my computer was infected. However I turned the PC off and on and then ... Read more

Hello,
I've broken my desktop pc and I've tried to sort it but my skills are pretty minimal so it would be great if anyone could give me a bit of advice or point me in the right direction.

Here's a description of what happened:
After using my pc I went to turn it off as normal but I switched off the socket too soon, as the pc hadn't finished shutting down.
When I went to restart it, it seemed to be ok but before it booted up properly i got this message.

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM.
select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

Unfortunately I dont have the original setup CD-ROM, but I do have a copy of windows xp home.
I booted the pc from this disk and I pressed 'r' which took me to the recovery console, I'm well and truly stuck here, I dont know how to operate the recovery console.
Does anyone know how I can repair my pc from here or is there anything else I can do?
Many thanks in advance,
Martyn

I downloaded Kapersky internet security 7.0. It was working good for a couple days, and then it identified some file that was named something like win32/winlogon.exe, as behaving suspiciously. So I quarantined it, and then the computer shut down, and when it restarted, it went throught that initial Windows loading page, and then right before I get to the part where I choose which account to log into the computer with, the computer restarts. I have tried to run the computer in safe mode, and done like all the options in that screen, like restoring last known settings or whatever. The only thing I didn't do on that menu was something where you type commands, and I dont know how to do that kind of thing, nor did I even know my password to start the process lol..

Some people have told me to try fixing Windows with the Windows Recovery CD that comes with the computer.. but I lost this a couple years ago when I moved. My computer is a Compaq Presario SR1135CL, I have Windows XP Home, with service pack 2. I contacted HP to try to get a new recovery cd but the person I talked to said he couldn't help because my warranty ran out. But he said if I paid 59 dollars, he could connect me to a technician who could solve the problem in a matter of seconds.. So I don't know if the problem is actually something very easy to fix or if he was just trying to scam me into paying for a service..

sorry so long, thanx for reading

A:windows wont load b/c missing system file

Winlogon.exe is used to facilitate logins/logoffs and is a necessary file. If you could find another XP Home disc you can repair the OS and that should fix it. Other than that you could try copying that file from a working computer and put it in the folder where it is supposed to be although i don't know if that method will work or not. And the HP guy was probably going to tell you to use the CD to fix it in a matter of seconds.

I have the game 'Crysis' on two backup DVD's. I had to put the installation files in a .rar and split them so I could back it up (I downloaded the game digitally from EA)

So when I insert disk 1 and try to copy 'Crysis.part1.rar' to D:/Crysis (D: is my data drive, C: is strictly the OS and maybe 2 or 3 applications installed on it) it copies most of it, but when it gets to '5 seconds remaining' it comes up with this error. It takes like 6 minutes to copy it and then it errors out when it's almost done! I've tried 3 times and the error popped up every time. The disk is spotless... I mean it looks brand new. Not even a speck of dust or any smudges at all.

Why am I getting this error?? I don't know what to do! If I can't copy it I'll have to redownload the entire 6gb installation package from EA, which will take probably 4-5 hours.

Please help!

Additional file info from within the error window:
"Can't read from the source file or disk."
Name: Crysis.part1.rar
Size: 4.37gb (4,588,544KB)
Date Modified: 11/2/2009 12:25PM

Other additional info:
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64
I have all the latest updates via Windows Update
There is only one account on this computer, mine, and it has full administrative privileges

• I have a network directory that stores photos of individuals in jpg format. There may be only 2 pics of each person, or there may be 7 pics.
• Each persons pics are stored in a randomly named directory / subdirectory. dont have any control over the original program, it's just the way it was written, does not seem to follow any logical pattern, possibly a HEX naming structure based off the date & time, who knows (I will include a sample directory tree at the end of the post).
• Included within each of these created directories, along with the pictures, is a standard text file (filename "B.TXT") which includes the date the picture was taken, the persons name, and other information.
• Each time a person comes in and their picture is taken, the program: (i) creates the random directory (ii) stores the pics (iii) creates the "B.TXT" file with the persons information (iv) generates several other program specific files that I have no need for.
• The program names each of the pictures with the exact same names, which is why they are stored in different directories, so they will not overwrite. The retention period on each individuals directory, pics and files is approximately 40 days.

I'm currently using Richcopy to move about 4TB worth of data from our colo facility (1000 miles away) to our office. And that data also gets routed overseas first before coming back (don't ask). Needless to say, connectivity while not bad, could be better.

The small files are zooming right along, the issue is the larger files (the ones that are hundreds of MB or even several GB).

From time to time, I briefly lose network connectivity for a second or two, when that happens, the files currently being copied abort and once connectivity is restored, Richcopy just moves on to the next files. So when Richcopy advertises that it 'resumes', it seems it is talking about resuming a file copy queue, and not resuming partially copied files. Those have to start over from the beginning.

Is there a tool similar to Richcopy with the functionality I'm looking for?

Thanks!

A:Need a file copy recommendation with partial file resume

I'd look at some of the Download Manager choices on this list found by Google Search:
