I'm not sure how it happened, but I managed to perform a system recovery on my VAIO sz330p. Is there any possible way to undo this a get my system back to the way it was before?? Or at least retrieve some files I had on before? Unfortunately I never turned my system restore on because I didn't exactly know how to so I can't configure my laptop back to a specific date...

Is there anything I can do? If I took my laptop to a technician would he/she be able to undo the recovery?

So what can a person do when Recovery partition "D" is deleted on Windows Vista? Is that the end? There must be a way to handle it.

Since the PC is still running okay, can I create my own restore files?

Or since they all com e from the factory the same way, can I download one?

I need some really help on this one

A:Recovery partition "D" erased by accident. What to do?

I would download and use macrium reflect to save on a separate hard drive. It is the best way, in any case.
Files can be saved separately or as an image of the hard drive, using the above.

I have a HP Pavillion with Vista Home Premium that I have been using for about 2 months. I am unhappy with the system (to many crashes and unresolved issues). I am going to return it after I do a recovery. My question is how secure is my data that the recovery process will delete. Should I do something else to my data before I run the recovery?

I have a Dell machine here with the system recovery stored on the hard disk? You access it by pressing Ctrl+F11 when the blue Dell band appears across the top of the screen just after POST.

Let's say I install Acronis TrueImage and Acronis Secure Zone (press F11 for Acronis Recovery). Think that will destroy access to Dell's "Press Ctrl+F11" for system recovery?

A:Acronis TrueImage Secure Zone backup destroy Dell's "Press Ctrl+F11" system recovery?

IMHO, you are better served bt depending on one recovery program or another.

I have Acronis TI instaled on my machine and use it exclusively. XP's System Restore is disabled and I have no othet backup/recovery programs actrive. Just my way of doing it and so far so good. I'm sure others will have differing opinoins.

I am trying to make an secure POP3 (port 995) and secure IMAP (port 993) connection thru Verizon FIOS via the ActionTec MI424WR modem/router/802.11G box that Verizon supplied. I am running Vista, and I am using Outlook 2007, which is set to these ports.

I wanted to do this with the firewall set to the "Maximum Security (High)" setting.

These ports were not available in the ActionTec's pick list so I added these ports (using the "Advanced" tab and then under "Protocols") so they read "TCP any -> 993" and "TCP any -> 995"

I tried adding these ports to the "Access Control" table, and the "Port Forwarding" table and the "Advanced Filtering" table but none worked.

The Verizon Tech Support line worker told me the only solution was to enable the DMZ host and set it to be the IP address of the computer I happened to be on.

To my astonisment, with DMZ enabled, the "Access Control" rules seemed to kick in for the DMZ host and my secure POP3 would only work if I had this port allowed in the "Access Control" table.

Questions:
1. Is it safe to run with DMZ pointing to my computer.

I thought this effectively brought the "DMZ host" (i.e. my computer) outsied the firewall and exposed all the ports on my computer directly to the internet. (But if that were the case, then

2. why does the Access Control table work only to the DMZ host???

DMZ does indeed expose the computer directly to the outside world, that's why it's called the DMZ!

Let me start by saying that lately my bank website, Norton Safesearch and even your website appear to have replaced their secure certificates with outdated or insufficient security. Usually in these cases the https in the address bar is crossed out or has a yellow          ! triangle. If you click on that triangle or crossed out space you will see a grey box that says "your connection to this site is not private". My connection is a private home network as opposed to public. It used to say "you have not visited this site before today" but that phrase is no longer there. Of course I've gone to these sites before. In the grey box there is a tab titled 'connections'. Click on that and it says '! The identity of this website has not been verified' and '! Your connection to www.xxxxxxx.com is not encrypted'. These sites normally have the green bar in the address bar indicating a secure connection. Clicking on the green bar will give you the same grey box, only this time it says "Your connection to this site is private" and it will tell you 'the identity of this site has been verified by [name of certificate]. Valid Certificate Transparency supplied by the server'. It will say 'your connection is encrypted using an obsolete cipher suite, or [...encrypted using a modern cipher suite]. Both are followed by specific connection and encryption information, i.e. TLS 1.2.

I would like to start focusing my work at the coffee shop now since I can't focus much at home anymore. I don't know much about security and have never used a public wifi before after hearing many stories about it being completely insecure. The work I'm doing is very important and I cannot have any problems with weak security. Is VPN as secure as a home network?

After digging from google, all I have to do is subscribe to a VPN provider, connect to the public wifi, then connect to the VPN server? Is that it?

I also found out that 4G mobile connection isn't too secure as well so I'm unsure what approach I should go.

Which would be more secure?

1. Connect to VPN through public free wifi
or
2. Connect to VPN through 4G mobile internet usb stick
or
3. Or use no internet at all? My work does not require much internet connection, however it would help a lot if i did have the connection.

However, I do have a really dumb question. If I don't connect to any networks on my laptop at a free public wifi there is no way someone can hack into my laptop right? Nobody can somehow hijack and go into my laptop if i'm within the free wifi radius?

Also what are all the security softwares I need? I have malwarebytes premium active shield and avast free but thinking of upgrading to the premium

A:Is VPN really secure for public wifi coffee shops? What is the most secure way?

Only if the VPN also encrypts your traffic.

As for which would be more secure..obviously 3 would be the most secure. Don't connect to the internet and disable your wifi adapter and bluetooth adapter (if you have one).

IMO 2 would be the next best option since it's still your own hotspot; but they could still try and sift through traffic through 4G network (if it's possible for them to do). Most likely would be very difficult however, since the network is transmitting data to/from the cell tower(s) via a wide spectrum - I haven't really looked into traffic monitoring over cell networks though, so I'm just guessing on that.

Obviously the public wifi would be the least secure, especially if you use a VPN that doesn't encrypt your traffic.

As for security software... using your own common sense is going to be the best thing. You could look into a software firewall such as Comodo or ZoneAlarm (but IMO they can be annoying and intrusive). Built-in Windows firewall is decent enough.

In my Home Office using my Notebook and wireless router I have WEP encryption with a Network security key. But I am often away on the road in Asia and I connect to both unsecured and WEP secured wireless networks in restaurants, hotels and internet cafes.

When I need to log in to certain web sites to attend to important personal info like bank accounts and credit cards and make payments etc I often avoid it for fear of this information being visible or accessible to others, even on the WEP secured ones.

I 'm wondering though, if it shows the connection as WEP secured in Manage Wireless Connections, does that mean things are secure or can other people using the same wireless pick up on what others around them are sending and receiving?

I guess what I am asking is, how can I know if a wireless connection is safe on the road and is there anything I can do to make it safe or safer? I suspect many others encounter this same issue.

Thanks,

hello, i used acronis true image and disk director suite and successfully cloned and backup disks many times. recently i installed pgp enterprise to secure the disk. as fate would have it i decided to increase the secure zone partition. the operating system on boot prompted for pgp password to decrypt the drive and then acronis loaded and i used the partition management option. the partition limit of secure zone was enhanced from 55 gb to 61 gb (limit being shown as 69gb). the three steps that appeared were C drive size being fixed from 55 gb to 45 gb, D drive (which was pgp secured) was shown to be going NO change and the third step was the Secure Zone expanding from 45 GB to 51 gb or so. when all the steps were done, the system booted. as always the first prompt was PGP secure disk, i entered the password but the second prompt for Acronis halted and Displayed a fatal error and asked to press enter to attempt to boot the OS. On pressing Enter the system booted and the OS was normal EXCEPT that the D drive was being shown as Raw (i.e. needed to formatted). On inspecting the D drive with Acronis disk manager the three partitions were visible the C and Secure zone with the newly allocated disk space but the D was being shown as RAW Although the D disk size was being shown as before, i.e. 45 GB. All assets are resided in the D drive. Please advise how to recover or restore the partitions.

Welcome to TSF.

That's not good. That's the main reason we tell users not to use this program on their own since it can cause damage. Do you have an older log of what you had before you did the fixes? If not, tell us what you fixed if you can remember.

Post your new log you have now and we'll take a look at it. What firewall program are you using?

Hi everyone.

I am having a very similar issue as OP, but I "accidentally" [STUPID ME.....] did diskpart/clean (only clean) on a remote HD (149Ghz size with no partition on it).

I am still reading through this thread and hopefully I will be able to recover my data on this remote HD. I have been using TestDisk, EaseUS partition recovery to scan (only quick scan so far) w/o any luck yet. At this moment I am running Partition Recovery quick scan now. Since I do not have any partition on this HD, I am not sure if I am doing the right thing.... I only store pictures (tons of them) and some docs on it. I am on Page 9 of this thread, I will keep reading and trying.

Thanks in advance for helping me,

For the record: I am Win98 and ME certified and knowledgeable with DOS.
I am a 'shift-del' freak and was cleaning my desktop, 3 weeks ago and accidentally included my coin logs(I've been working on these for 3.5 years). Being an XP user and knowing XP doesn't use DOS, I thought there was no chance of getting them back; I just found out I was wrong and with the proper tools I can. I never did this before, but so need to. Please help.

UPDATE: A friend referred me to "recuva" yoake a recovery, of about 15 files(MSWord), I got back 2 and one was my buff(buffalo coin) logs. However later I discovered;both files will not open. Windows says, "word cannot find compressor for..." I'm clueless here. Plus after choosing to unhide all files and folders, I ran into 2 files that have the names I lost; but they begin with "~$", only have 1K and the icon is light colored. What is this? I think the reason it doesn't work is because of the drive I accidently deleted. Is there any way that I could get the data back without taking it to a repair shop? Thanks for any help. Oh and I cant put my laptop on standby either.

Hello-I have a windows xp (version 2002) Asus EeePC and I think I might have downloaded a virus accidentally whilst on a music radio website. I found that it messed up my internet browser and it would directly open to a website called "partner12.mydomainadvisor.com" Please advise what I should do to clean this up! I have changed the default from the wierd website to "google.com" but it still will default to this website "partner12..." if the domain name does not exist. i used to have norton antivirus but the subscription ran out and i did not renew...I know I should probably get something to protect my computer as well from now on. Thank you

General Info

Cant do anything on computer
using a different laptop right now

I was in regedit trying to delete an instant savings app that had found its way into my computer. I believe i was in Local_Users and i know i went to the software folder. I accidentally deleted the software folder and I couldnt use any programs. I couldnt use a system restore because it gave me an error so i decided to reboot and go into safe mode and do it there but it didnt work. I have been trying to figure all of this out with windows technicians and didnt get anywhere. I cant do anything on my broken computer because when i boot it up, it skips the boot menu and i cant get it into safe mode or anything. it goes straight to the lock screen and I cant read any texts and can only put in my password. After I put in the password, it gives me a black screen for a few seconds with a blue spinning wheel on my mouse and it goes back to the lock screen. My idea was to load the cd I have with the win8 pro back onto my computer and that would reset the registry but I dont know how to do this because I cant do any functions on my pc at the moment. any help would be great. Sorry for all the bad writing, I am trying to finish a lot of homework and figure out this problem at the same time.

Thank you,
Alex

Hi all,

I'm not pc savvy at all so this message comes with a tad bit of panic!

My mother accidently hit "log off" instead of restart using windows XP. Now she gets a blue screen that says "Welcome" on the left and my family's name with a chess board icon on the right. There's a button on the bottom that says "turn off family computer". We cannot get to the desk top no matter what we try. We can only shut it down. We think she hit log off-- since it's a family computer we never use this function. Can anyone tell me how to get back to the desktop? (she's quite upset because we're not sure what happened exactly, and not sure what to do)

ANY help or suggests are welcome! Thanks much!

Hi.

I got an OEM version of Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit with my PC, which is capable of 64-bit.

I've read that the serial key is legal for either version, 32-bit or 64-bit, but the DVD I got only has 32-bit version.

How can I get a new DVD with the 64-bit version, as I got 8 gigs of ram and I can't use them.

I bought and built the computer myself and made a mistake when I ordered Windows, and asked for 32-bit because I was scared of compatibility, and I opened and installed it already, so I can't take it back.

A:Windows OEM 32-bit bought by accident,need 64-bit DVD

You can try contacting whoever supplied you with the 32bit disc and explain your mistake... they may send you a new 64bit one... You may just have to bite the bullet and purchase the 64bit version...

Today I used Ctrl-Break to stop a macro, but must have done something else accidentally as I have lost my VBA menus entirely. Hello,

While I accomplished so much successfully setting up my computer in AHCI earlier, I now blew it all.

I had the SMART command failure error with my SSD, and received a new BIOS from my motherboard manufacturer. I applied it and "Loaded Optimized Defaults" in the BIOS as your supposed to. Stupid me, that means the motherboard activates IDE mode, but I installed Windows in AHCI mode.

So... I switched it back to AHCI after booting into IDE by accident and now I'm getting MBR Error. Is there any way to repair this? I have been trying to repair it through the Windows Install disk, using bootsec & command prompt to no avail.

Likely because where the screen pops up that says: "Use recovery tools that can help fix problems starting Windows. Select an operating system to repair" There's no option to select. So I elected to "Load Drivers" using iaAHCI.inf [Intel ICH10R] from the Intel RST installer (I extracted it on my Laptop). It still doesn't recognize it.
-->This is all pertaining to image 3. on the guide on the link HERE

If I HAVE to install Windows again, I have 2 storage drives installed as well, do I take them out to prevent them from being formatted? They are holding My Documents/My Pictures/My Music/My Videos etc.

Thanks!

You shouldn't have to reinstall, have a look at this tutorial at the link below, it shows how to enable AHCI after the OS has been installed and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

Hi,
I was going to check if my external HDD needed to be defragged. I was in the wee window that asks about checking the disk for errors and decided to do that, there's always two options, one is always automatically ticked and there's another one that said something about find and attempt to restore corrupt files, that is never ticked and I never choose it, until today. All I noticed was it found 1024 files, and I clicked proceed, it processed or fixed etc and i went back to the pc after an hour and decided just to cancel as it seemed to be stuck at 2025 files checked.
Once i clicked cancel I couldn't get access to my external HDD and when I right on 'My Computer' it says it's NTFS files and is full but windows can't get access to it, i thought i'd try restoring it and i can see that out of the 1TB I have used 330GB which is what my disk was like before my mistake.
as with most people I have all my most important stuff saved there away from my C drive.
Ok, sorry for waffling on, can anyone tell me if I am able to restore my drive back to what it was (Would that have been FAT32 files?)

By Accident I Unplugged My Computer while it was on and now i am worried that my movie files will be corrupted...they seem to play fine...but i am still worried....please could somebody please help by telling me if any of my files will become damaged...thank you

A:By Accident I Unplugged My Computer While It Was On

Unless the files were open and being played or saved at the time of the power loss, there should be no damage.

But remember that power can do out at any time and hard disks die without warning (quite often, these days), so all your important data must be backed up. Since you are so worried it would suggest you have no backup plan. Maybe time to get one?

As an example I backup all new data every day, to a second and totally separate hard drive, then all data to DVD every week. Every DVD is "verified" to ensure that no files are corrupt in the copy process.

Hi all, I am new here so nice to meet you.
I have annoying problem. I was reinstalling xp and I created a new partition (not very familiar with what this means), and so now my c drive has changed its name to e. I have been to windows website none of the processes work (disk management ect), the computer just wont let me either delete the new partition or change the names of the drives. I know this is touchy buisness so I dont want to proceed until I know what I am doing.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Personally, I'd find it much easier to figure out what's going on here if I could see what Disk Manager says. You don't seem to have a very good grasp on disk terminology, so if you could take a screenshot of a fully expanded Disk Manager, (right click My Computer, select manage, on the right side of the screen choose disk management) then I can get back to you with much more specific advice.

Edit: To take a Screen shot, press print screen on your keyboard, and then paste into an image program such as paint. Save the resulting file, and then upload it to a site such as photobucket which will host the image for you for free. (You have to sign up for a free account first.) After uploading to an image hosting site, the site will provide you with several links that you can use to post the image here on this forum.

I have a 2TB external hard drive and a 1TB external hard drive.
I got a new 2TB internal hard drive and was installing Windows on it.
On the screen where it showed the connected drives, I stupidly forgot the 2 external drives were still connected. I thought somehow it was breaking up the new 2TB internal drive into 3 separate partitions. I clicked on the two external drives and deleted the partitions because I thought it would merge them. I DID NOT format luckily.
I am in the middle of running the Analyzer using TestDisk on the 2TB external. Since it is a 2TB hard drive, it is analyzing about 10% of the disk per day. So I guess it will take 10 days to finish. Small price to pay if I can recover all the data on these drives. One has all our home movies and photos and the other has all our scanned documents in PDF format. Sigh.
I am wondering if I am doing this the right way with TestDisk? Is there a faster way? When I deleted the partitions, the process took less than a second. The drives were partitioned to used 100% of the drive space. I read the page TestDisk Step By Step but still not sure if there isn't an easier way for my particular blunder. Nothing should be corrupted. Just deleted.
Thank you!

A:Deleted Partitions By Accident Please Help

Yes it should be faster. I thought there were two levels to the restore deleted partitions and only the deeper level involves scanning the surface for old deleted partitions.

most of the time it is compressed in this folder.

Here is a copy of it from my XP installation (uncompressed)
See attached
You will need a XP install CD and use recovery environment to copy the file to the proper place, or use an Ubuntu boot CD to do it.

Here is an article on using a Ubuntu CD to copy data off an unbootable windows PC, one could also use it to copy a file to a Windows folder.

Hello, I recently purchased Dell XPS 8700 that came with a 2tb harddive formatted with GPT. The computer came with Windows 8, and I wanted to downgrade to Windows 7. However the windows installer wouldn't install on any of the current partitions, so I deleted every partition with gParted and proceeded to install Windows 7 successfully onto the one giant partition. Since I deleted all the GPT partition information (Idiotically), I am unable to make more partitions and dual boot.

So my questions are: Is my harddrive as of right now in MBR or GPT? And how would I add the GPT partitions back, as in the primary and secondary GPT headers?

Edit: I am attempting to dual boot with Xubuntu 14.04 and Windows 7 Professional, both 64bit and the computer has the UEFI, I think. Am I better off using MBR or GPT to dual boot? I only want two OS's and a shared data partition.

A:Deleted all the GPT Partitions by accident

Quote:
Since I deleted all the GPT partition information (Idiotically), I am unable to make more partitions and dual boot.

Deleting all GPT partitions is a recommended step to downgrade "Windows 8" as "Windows 7" is known to not much liking GPT based UEFI boot mode. Although "Win 7" 64 bit edition may boot from a GPT disk, i prefer MBR partitioning especially in case of dual booting with Linux. The only mistake you made here is not to partition the disk at the time of install. Fortunately you can split the single large "C" partition to two or three small partitions with the help of "Partition Wizard" free edition.

Hi guys,I wanted to split 8 gb file but instead of MBs I selected bytes so basically now I have alot of 4.1 kb files so I would appreciate if you could tell me how I can delete all the files quickly because manually deleting all the files is slow and I have some other stuff to do.

A:[SOLVED] Funny accident

In Computer select the first file scroll down the list to the last file you want to delete and press the Shift key and click on the last file press delete to send them to the recycle bin or hold the Shift key and press delete to permanently delete them.

I was curious as Malwarebytes, MSE, and even ESET didn't find anything like this, while SUPERAntiSpyware found adware but not these, though I'm not too sure: but I brought up start task manager and looked under processes and found two that weren't under my user name (just so you know, under "users" it's just me), and after looking them up on google, learned that they might be trojans. They are: csrss.exe, and winlogon.exe. Well, that last one isn't really a trojan, but wasn't under my user name so I brought it up here just in case.

I don't want to get in trouble, as I need to do some accounting-related stuff soon n my comp., so I need to know if they are trojans or not, and if they are, how to get rid of them right away. Any ideas, and could there be more? (Again, Malwarebytes, MSE, SUPERAnti and ESET didn't pick this up)

Secure computers aren't so secure.

Even well-defended computers can leak shocking amounts of private data. MIT researchers seek out exotic attacks in order to shut them down.

The encryption system that Tromer was attacking, called AES, was particularly vulnerable because it used tables of precalculated values as a computational short cut, so that encoding and decoding messages wouldn’t be prohibitively time consuming. Since Tromer and his colleagues published their results, Intel has added hardware support for AES to its chips, so that Internet encryption software won’t have to rely on such “lookup tables.”

In a statement, Intel told the MIT News Office that its decision “was mainly motivated by the performance/efficiency benefits achieved,” but that “in addition, there is a potential security benefit since these new instructions can mitigate the possibility of software side channel attacks on AES that have been described in research papers, including those discovered by Tromer, Percival, and Bernstein.”Click to expand...

Ok, now how old is my chip and does it have the Intel hardware support for AES? Gulp!

-- Tom

P.S. I will try to find out which chip series have the hardware support for AES and post it here - but, if you find out before I do, please do not hesitate to post the information yourself. Is it time to get a new motherboard already, or will my current motherboard be able to accept the chips with AES hardware support?

I know it posses a threat or not secure but it is happening on real well known sites. it also happens on all computers in the house but I'm pretty sure only with google chrome.

A:secure sites not secure in chrome.

Hi Adams369 If you are using Google Chrome 42, this is normal. Starting in version 42, Google Chrome starts tagging as "insecure" websites that uses SHA-1 algorithm encryption for their certificates, in order to move them to a more secure one since SHA-1 is old and deprecated (less secure). If you want, I created a thread on that yesterday where I show how to get these certificates information on a website, so you can verify yourself. Also, would you mind posting which websites are having this insecure connection so I can test them for my troubleshooting?Google Chrome 42 vs SSL CertificatesThank you

The bluetooth driver was accidently deleted from my computer.  I downloaded the driver from the support site, but it's still not working. I can't have it hook up to my printer or my speakers.  What am I doing wrong? Or what else do I need to do?  When I go to the icons in the bottom right corner of my toolbar and select to have the bluetooth icon show icons and notifications, it says this notification icon is not currently active. It will be shown the next time it becomes active.  I have even restarted my computer and it doesn't seem to work.

I used a program called disk wipe to delete my sd card but it ended up selecting my main drive instead. I had selected the sd card drive but it said cannot format fat32 and kicked me back to the drive selection window and automatically selected my C drive. I thought the sd card drive was still selected but apparently not. I highly do not recommend this program.

Now the disk wipe program says wipe complete. I can still use my computer and it looks like nothing from the C drive was wiped. If I reboot the laptop, will the data get wiped? I am afraid of turning it off or putting it to sleep.

Usually the final step of such programs takes place after the program is closed and the computer restarted or after clicking a button Apply as in the case of partitioning programs.

Hi, my computer (IDell Dimension 5150) was having problems booting, it would lag at the last bar of the BIOS loading screen. After a while, it wouldn't turn on, a flashing amber light which meant that there was a power source but wasn;t reaching it internally, and the suggestion from the manual was to check voltage. I reallly regret it now but I was in a hurry and i was playing around with the voltage switch and changed it from 230 to 115 and I heard a pop noise and now the Green LED light isn't on anymore and computer won't boot. I don't smell anything funny so I hope it's ok. I really need the computer so if you guys could help out, Thanks heaps.

Hello, hope someone can help. I recently purchased a hp envy 15 with windows 8.1. I purchased office 2013 and when i opened microsoft one note i was asked for my microsoft account info. I created one, entered the information, walked away from my laptop for a bit. When i came back it was locked and my microsoft account is now my login for the computer. I do not know my password and have been unable to get it from microsoft live. What can i do to log in this is extremely frustrating that i am locked out. Thanks

A:locked myself out of hp envy 15 windows 8.1 by accident

Should be an option to "switch" accounts. Not having an HP Envy 15 I'm not sure on how to tell you to get there. I would try pressing the Windows Key + L key to lock the computer, and when you press a key to gain access, there should be an option to switch user accounts or an arrow ping back...which may or may not take you to a screen that will let you use another account to unlock the computer. Good luck.

Hey Guys I screwed up as follows:

I was fooling around with my graphics drivers and accidentally deleted them. A screen popped up to reboot the computer. It rebooted.

Now whenever I restart my computer, first a microsoft screen appears, then it appears to load but I have no on-screen visual as i get a monitor error message (Not Optimum Mode, Recommended 1920x1200, 60Hz), I am therefore unable to download and install any updated drivers.

What Can I do to restore my Drivers or at least get a visual to Re-install them?

I'm running Windows Vista, and one of the newer NVidia Graphics Cards.

I believe you'd need to boot into safe mode in order to get the resolution down, or at least that's the easiest way I can think of. Boot into safe mode and allow as much as possible, try installing your drivers from there.

Guy that used to work on my cousins comp is no longer available.

I was given the comp to see if I could get it going. On booting up all there was was a blue screen with an error message about there being no boot sector or something.

I wanted to do a repair so I put the cd in and hit enter when it said do a fresh install, accepted the agreement, then expected (as per directions) that I would have a choice of a new install or repair. But instead I was sitting in front of 3 partitions. I thought the obvious partition for windows to be on would be C:

I selected 'C' and then selected to install saving current files (or something like that). Other alternatives all involved format.

Next thing its doing a fresh install, I was still waiting for the chance to repair, I thought it would give me a chance to go back if I made a mistake.

After loading files the computer re-booted to continue the installation, but before continuing with the installation all these errors were repaired in 'D'. Now when I boot up i'm asked which operating system to start with a choice of 2 versions of windows XP.

First I want to know how to remove the 2nd installation. I believe just deleting the windows folder wont do it, there will still be the option of which operating system to use at start-up.

Next thing is, looking at 'D' drive. In Documents and Settings/Owner there is a folder Windows, the only thing it contains is a folder 'System' and it appears to b... Read more

My question reguarding a potential command prompt error.

I recently installed a game that was ment to be played only on Windows xp.
The problem was since vista was unable to run it, i decided to look around forums to see if there was anything i can do to fix this.

I finaly found a command that bypassed the "Data Execution prevention"
Known as:
bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff

I inserted it in the command prompt and pressed enter.
The game still wouldnt run.
Finally i decided to just uninstall it.

Moments later, i tried running yahoo messenger.
I recieved a message saying "To help protect your computer, Data execution prevention has closed Yahoo messenger.

Not only Messenger but a few other programs as well.

Is there a way to fix this back to normal?

I've just come out of a grim period due to blasted KB3022345 and thanks to help from dc3 - see http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/578361/major-shut-down-problems/page-2

There had been an earlier warning that Microsoft could be hiding yet another revision of it (5th or 6th?) under KB3068708 and I was advised not to install it, but wait a few days and then check here for any bad news (sound advice, especially if you've been nobbled by KB3022345).

Many months ago I changed my settings so that updates would not be automatically - well I thought that I had. But I hadn't - I should have chosen "check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them".

Instead I'd selected "download updates but let me choose whether to install them" and the result when I shut down last night was the message "downloading1 of 9 updates - do not switch off" - I couldn't do anything to stop the updates being installed and I'm horrified that the option I'd chosen gave me no choice at all - there was no shield icon "updates are available" - they just installed presumably as part of the powering down process.

I've now got the "check for but let me choose" option in place but having seen that KB3068708 had been installed I ran sfc /scannow and the CBS log is again a huge one, 248 MB. Does the sheer size of it suggest problems (I haven't noticed any yet)?

I've put a link on the other thread so that dc3 knows what's happened.

A:Installed KB3068708 by accident - now have a huge CB log

Two signs of a problem or just a co-incidence (in which case what should I do?)?

(1) Word & Excel documents are now taking up around ten/fifteen seconds to open.

(2) When I switch off I get the message "The following programs are still running - end or force closure" or words to that effect - but there are no open programs displayed.

Hello,
I have 2 operating systems installed on my computer: Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10
When I was trying to create a new partition, I accidentally converted the main disk into a dynamic one and now it doesn't want to boot: it crashed at the GRUB and restarts the computer automatically.
I tried to revert back the partition codes from 0x42 to 0x07 for NTFS and 0x83 for linux but GRUB still crashes.
I don't really care that much about the linux partition, but I want to recuperate my main windows partition. I tried the Windows Repair from the CD but it doesn't detect any problems.
I don't really feel like backing up the whole system, formating the disks and all cuz I don't even have a spare HD for that.
Is there any other way around the problem?
Right now I only have access to ubuntu 9.10 in livecd mode.
Thank you
