Network paths (UNC \\server) broke

Q: Network paths (UNC \\server) broke

Love 7 so far! But today I needed to access a share (\\servername\share) but when I went to type it, it came up cannot connect. We're on a domain with AD, and noticed in eventvwr that GP not processing:

The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows attempted to read the file \\internal.domain\SysVol\internal.domain\Policies\{5682A7A2-6BAE-4655-8DB6-7CAF8ECC6042}\gpt.ini from a domain controller and was not successful. Group Policy settings may not be applied until this event is resolved. This issue may be transient and could be caused by one or more of the following:
a) Name Resolution/Network Connectivity to the current domain controller.
b) File Replication Service Latency (a file created on another domain controller has not replicated to the current domain controller).
c) The Distributed File System (DFS) client has been disabled.

Also would not map network drives. Anyways, ended up doing a system restore to a known working point in time, and that seemed to work, until I rejoined the computer to domain (since it had lost the trust relationship because of the system restore), but after a few group policies processed, and a couple critical updates were installed, it broke again. So now I unplug from the network at bootup, login, then plug network back in, and it seems to be a workaround for now, but hopefully it's only a temporary one. Anyone have any ideas?

I would check DNS and that your clock is set to match your domain controller.

On my main PC i am running Windows 7 Homepremium 64bit. My Pc is connected via ethernet cable to BT Homehub3.

I have another PC running Windows XP SP3 connected via WiFi and a laptop also Wndows XP and connected vis WiFi.

I have a Kodak C110 AiO printer connected to the home pc via USB cable.

I have tried to set up printing on the other PC and laptop and the Printer is shown in the network map, but cannot and all my efforts have now disrupted the network; viz I cannot access shared files on the Network.

On the Home PC the network is called Network 2.

I want it to be the Homegroup or Work Group but cannot seem to make this happen.

Any suggestions please?

A:How do I reset my network paths

If I take it you want to print on the main PC from the other two ? I have a similar situation and set it up giving the main PC a fixed IP and then when adding the printer to the other two I used the local port method i.e \\fixed IP address\printer share name, having initially shared the main printer - you will need to install the printer driver on the remote systems. My main PC is ethernet and all the others are wireless.

Hope this is of help.

Hey Techspot,
The other computers in my network have trouble accessing certain shared folders on my main computer. I have three drives installed, C: my OS drive, and D: and B: file drives. My C: Public folder, another folder on C: and my entire D: drive have been shared for a long time, and are the only paths the other computers can access. Anything I try to share now (except stuff on the D: drive, since the entire thing is share-enabled) will return the "is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource." error.
I can understand why a computer in it's entirity wouldn't be accessible across a network, but as to why certain locations wouldn't work - some on the same drive as locations that do work - I'm at a loss.
Thanks in advance!

I forgot to mention, all the computers are running Vista Home Premium or Ultimate, all on an ethernet lan with a Belkin router.

I guess this may be a tiny bit off the subject here, but I am attempting this in windows 7.

I have a program file manager tool called 'Directory Opus' that is capable of calling windows external programs and passing them the current directory the file manager is sitting on.

So far so good.

Now I want to call a cygwin (linux/unix emulator for windows) terminal with that file manager.

Checking properties on the cygwin Icon I got the path: C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico -

So it is a path to a command and an argument to that command.

Actually I guess it is 2 arguments to a command since I think '-' in that position means to feed anything on STDIN to the command. At least that would be true in unix shell programming.

So using the Directory opus setup I pass this call:
[email protected]:C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico - <and here add {s}>'

So the call ends up:
[email protected]:C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico - {s}'

That call does just what it is supposed to. It passed the current file absolute address however cygwin terminal does not understand the windows path notation. If I were passing it: C:\subdir\blah\ It would just say 'No such file' Cygwin terminal wants to see /cygdrive/c/subdir/blah Or at least I think that is what is happing.

So to cut to the chase.... I'd like to put a little wrapper to Cygwin terminal in there with the code necessary to convert 'C:\subdir\blah\' to '/cygdrive/c/subdir/blah/'

But, I do not know how ... Read more

I would ask on DonationCoder.com specifically this forum:
General Software Discussion - DonationCoder.com

The reason is I know there are a bunch of DO aficionados, who also use Linux, on that forum. I've never tried DO myself. I have played around with CygWin. But it's been a few years.

If the site wants a donation to sign up just explain to Mouser why you want to post etc.. I think he'll be sympathetic.

I had several hundred shortcuts in a folder on Server A.

The shortcuts all pointed to folders located within a certain folder on Server A.

Over the weekend, the IT guys moved all our data to Server B.

Unfortunately this broke all my shortcuts.

Is there a way I can fix them all in one step, or do I have to recreate all of them? Or, at least, is there a way to edit a shortcut path, ie, go in and change the server name from A to B, for all those shortcuts?

Alright, i've got one for all the geniuses I've found on the forum. My brother used my computer w/o my permission, went to GOD knows what site, and I ended up with NewDotNet+broken network connection. so far, i've used this computer to download and run: AVG spyware, FixNewDotNet by Symantec, WinSockXPFix, and LSPFix. I finally got AVG to where it won't find anymore newdotnet entries when it's on "full system scan" mode. i've manually gone into the registry and gotten rid of the newdotnet entries there. the leftover problems are as follows: no internet.firewall is automatically disabled about 3 minutes into my XP session.AVG's "email scanner" is not fully functional, (an error message i get).guard.exe, whatever that is (AVG?) is giving my CPU hell.when I run LSPfix, nothing is left in the 'remove' section, but here is what is in the 'keep' section:winrnrmswsock.dllnwprovau.dllrsvpsp.dllwinsockXPfix finds no problems. i've tried cmd->netsh winsock reset. no antivirus finds anything wrong with my computer. spybot and adaware find nothing wrong, and theyre updated as of the day before my freaking brother broke my comp. and last, but not least, here is my hijackthis log. We are having a virus outbreak at work.  I've identified three computers that are infected.  Malware Bytes has found the infections, but doesn't seem to be able to remove them.

So then I heard about Combofix.

Before running combofix on the infected  computers, I went and ran it on my own workstation, as a test to see what it does, and how it works.

It ran for about 15 minutes, then rebooted my computer.

After reboot, I have no network.  My LAN adapter does not acquire the correct DHCP address, verified with ipconfig.  ipconfig -renew fails.  There are many network related services that fail to start.  Right-clicking on the LAN adapter in the control panel causes Windows Explorer to crash.

I've rebooted several times.  I've manually tried to start the network services in services.msc, but they all fail.  I'm locked out of the LAN adapter in the control panel.

Any ideas before I end up wiping my entire workstation and reinstalling Windows?  Needless to say, I won't be recommending Combofix to anyone in the future.

I volunteer for a small charity. We have three Windows 98SE computers. Before my time, somebody set up a working local network with two of the three id'd with personal names and one by a title. I am pretty sure he used one of the computers (probably mine) as the "server" and assigned a network administrator with a password. He, of course, is long gone.
One of the names resigned and I am using her computer. To resecure the computer, I removed all references to her and re id'd it and the network with my name. I broke it - The other two computers are still connected by network, but mine is not. I thought it might be that the administrator had only their names authorized, so I re-enterded her name. Still no connect. I have rechecked all the file share, and neighborhood setups and all are as original. Can somebody help me get this third computer back on the local network?
Thanks, Joe

Hello,

My small office (six people) upgraded to Windows 10 about four months ago, when one user was tricked into the upgrade, and the rest of us followed suit so we'd all be using the same OS. We all have Dell Optiplex 980 desktops that were purchased about five years ago. Four out of six are connected to a software server installed about nine months ago; we all connect to the internet through a switch.

Since the Windows 10 upgrade we've had nothing but headaches with our network. We have two basic issues that I have been unable to resolve:1) Most of us cannot access each other's desktop printers, although we can all access the one printer that's networked directly through the switch. For the most part the printers are not appearing "on the server".
2) Most of us cannot access each other's documents, although there are two computers that use a very old (pre-Y2K) utility software, and those folders can be accessed by all users!
Also, not a problem but more of a symptom, is that when looking in CP Devices & Printers, only two computers show up under the Multimedia Devices area, when all six computers should be there.

I can guess there may be a group policy setting that's out of whack, but I don't know how to modify group policy or how to troubleshoot it.

I have reviewed this thread Latest networking issue caused by KB3189866 and KB3185614 and find that only two of us have one of the KBs installed (KB3189866), with no apparent connection noted between its pres... Read more

Last night an update happened on my laptop and now today no internet seems to be connecting to it.
The internet works fine on my mac computer right next to it when I plug the ethernet cable in but does nothing on my laptop when I swap the cable to it (I'm typing this on my mac) I keep receiving the error "one or more network protocols are missing from this computer"

I have tried:
Disabling ipv6
Installing reliable multicast protocol
Disable and re enable network adapter
ifconfig release/renew
reset winsock

Im at my wits end and nothing seems to help. I have been using Windows 10 just fine for a couple of weeks until this update. I still have the ability to downgrade back to Windows 8 for a couple more days but I would rather not as I don't even know that will fix my issue. I also have no previous reset points to roll back to.

A friend is moving his business, and the new business park that he's setting up shop in does not have anyway to get any wired internet to his building, excluding a T1 line, which he can't justify the cost of.

One windows 7 machine acts as the server, primarily for Quickbooks database, and there are two other windows 7 machines that are clients, reading off said database.

He's getting one of those usb dongles for wireless internet service, for the server only (the other two computers will be tethered to a smartphone for internet for QB and windows updates periodically).

They do NOT want to share the servers wireless connection to the other machines.

My only concern was if the server will continue to try to check the LAN for internet connectivity, or will it check both network connections when one fails, or is there a setting I can tell them to change to ensure it knows to go to the wireless dongle for internet all the time, without interfering with the workstations talking to the server over the LAN to get to the database?

The setup at the old office was business class DSL, they are using a relatively new Linksys router, which had the DSL authentication information.

Thank you!

I managed to find a solution this morning, for anyone that's interested, the whole article is here: Multiple Network Connections at the Same Time on Windows | Ivan Zlatev

But the short answer is, under the advanced properties of TCP/IP v4, uncheck automatic metric, set your internet to a value of 1, and the LAN to a value of 9999.

For example, the file is located on the Brisbane server (\\brisbane) and I would like to transfer it to the Mackay server (\\mackay) located 1000+km away. This file is approx 630MB and I don't want to slow the network traffic down too much so I need to know how long it will take to transfer.

My main desktop is a Vista Home Premium, 64-bit Dell system, connected to a WRT54G Router. Workgroup with my last name.

The Laptop originally was XP Home, configured to the same Workgroup name, connected to the same router, and networking was flawless.

In order to access a newly created Domain at my workplace, my Laptop was upgraded to XP Pro/SP3. There were still issues with a program on the work network, even though I could connect to the domain, so they decided to just get me a new desktop, and everything there is fine.

But now, I can't get my Laptop seen by my Desktop. Here are the details:

On my XP Pro Laptop, I entered the correct Workgroup name, and had to sign off the Domain. Now when I log on, I am connecting to "This Computer" and not the domain

From the XP Pro Laptop, I can see and Ping the Desktop, have Internet access, a proper IP Address, etc. The Desktop shows up on the Network, I can Map a Drive, etc. So from the XP Pro Laptop to the Vista Home Desktop, everything works fine in that direction.

On the Desktop, however, there is a problem. The Laptop does show up as a computer on the Network, but when I click on it to access it, I receive an Error Message:

Hello, I have read a few similar posts and the resolutions but it doesn't appear to be working for me. Any help is appreciated. I apologize if I am leaving out any important info.

I'm running a Windows XP PC, wired to a Verizon FIOS modem/router, model MI424WR. I have a second computer connected via wire to this and a third computer connected wirelessly. As of 2 hours ago and for months, all 3 machines have worked fine.

My PC froze while playing a game and I reset it. This is not common but it has happened before without issue upon start up. However this time I received a limited/no connectivity message. When repair was attempted it didn't work because "the network did not assign a network address to the computer". The 2nd and 3rd PC work fine though.

Back on my first PC, when I view the details there is a physical address, IP address, and subnet mask, BUT there is no Default Gateway, DNS Server, or WINS Server.

I have tried the other suggestions I read about RESET TCP/IP stack and RESET WINSOCK entries then restarting my machine but neither of these worked.

Under device manager my NVIDEA nForce networking adapter says it is working properly and there isn't any red X or yellow indicators.

The only weird thing I saw which i have not seen discussed here is when I run IPCONFIG /ALL: It says IP Routing enabled: NO and WINS Proxy enabled: NO.

A:Paths , Librabries ?

You need to remember that library's only point to the actual file somewhere on the network or on your own machine in the "user" files. If you need to delate something from the library you should delate the file from the actual source "my pictures" My documents" "my music".

But there is a way to make it work like you want.

Just go into Windows Media Player, choose the "organize" tab then "options" then choose the Library tab and set it to "delate files from the computer when delated from the Library. Although I believe that only works if you are delating files from Library of the machine that contains the source files.

That should allow for delating from the Library, but only from the machine that the files reside on, I don't believe it will work accross the network. It think it still works best if you delate from the file source instead of the Library.

I know the paths for these OS' since I use them:

And for Windows 7 also would be nice:

Looking for a way to add a single file to an existing .ZIP file, but need to specify the path within the existing file structure.

Example - I ZIP a directory and it's subs with all of their files. It has about 6 different subs and each of them have up to 10 subs of their own.
C:\WEBSHARE\WWWROOT\PE\SUB1\file1.asp

I need to add 1 single file and tell it that the path I want it to go to is:
C:\WEBSHARE\WWWROOT\PE\SUB1\file2.asp

BUT - the file is not coming from the same directory on the system being used to create the ZIP.

Please help.

Thanks,
Shaun

Hey:

I'm trying to enter a registry value. However, the place to enter it is dimmed:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\

When I right click App Paths "New" appears and should allow me to left click on "Key". However, "Key" is dimmed so I cannot select it.

I am the admin and logged in as such. I have XP Pro SP3 installed.

How do I make "Key" available?

Thx

A:How to make xp app paths key available

Sounds like a permissions issue of some kind.

Right click App Paths then click Permissions
Administrators and System should have Full Control and Read access, Power Users should have Read and Special, and Users should have Read access. Creator Owner should have Special. These should all be greyed out, meaning they are inherited.

There are still doubts about what the possible and legal upgrade paths are for Windows 7.

Below I tried to compile some information in a way which I hope will be helpful.

Thanks to my friend Kari for his valuable contribution
Any other additions or comments are much welcome

Definitions:
1) Upgrade: to move from Windows XP or Windows Vista to Windows 7
2) Custom or Clean Install: wipes the previous installation and install Windows 7 anew. Does not preserve user files
3) In-Place Upgrade: upgrades from specific versions of Vista to specific versions of Windows 7, preserving user files and programs.
4) Upgrade version: Windows 7 license for those who own a valid license of XP or Vista
5) Full retail version: Windows 7 license to install on any PC, independent of previous installations or ownership. Can be reinstalled on other computers (when activated the previous installation is no longer valid)
6) Full OEM version :Windows 7 license to install on one PC, independent of previous installations. Can only be re-installed on same computer and hardware setup

Upgrade paths
The chart below shows in what situations one can perform an in-place upgrade (e.g. from Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional) without the need to migrate files or programs, and the situations when one needs to do a Custom (Clean) Install and replace the data in the target disc. This is the case for all Windows XP owners or Windows Vista Starter. In this case you will need to migrate your personal files ... Read more

I can't figure out how to edit booloader paths.

I had the triple boot working- 7, vista, WUBI ubuntu. Then I installed Snow Leopard and tried to add it in via easyBCD.....and all hades broke loose.

Anybody know how to fix? And how to actually set OSX to boot from windows, since there's no drive letter?

A:Edit Bootloader Paths

Open an elevated command prompt in Windows 7

IMPORTANT: make a backup of your bcd file first. To do that, type:

Quote:

bcdedit /export C:\SAVEDBCD

For Vista:

Quote:

bcdedit /set {*insert here*} device partition=F:

* insert the Windows vista BCD ID, too small for me to read (take out the *'s)

ok, Vista should be working now, please test it to make sure

For Ubuntu: - optional; this will rename "nst Linux Loader" to "Wubi Ubuntu"

Quote:

bcdedit /set {*insert here*} description "Wubi Ubuntu"

* insert the "nst Linux Loader" BCD ID, too small for me to read (take out the *'s)

It is getting late, so try those, which should get Vista back on its feet, also go to the elevated cmd and type "bcdedit" please post back the results right-click the cmd prompt and select "mark" then highlight every thing, then post the results. Please copy the results, so i will be able to copy and paste

Also, what is the "EFI snow leopard" partition for???

Firstly, context: My student edition of Autodesk Maya was not working (something about the license being invalid or 'not found', and so when I searched for the error message online, a solution was to go into Environments and Paths, and replace/edit or add one for C:/Autodesk. It didn't work, and I ended up just uninstalling and reinstalling the program manually for it to work.
However, apparently I screwed around really badly in there, because now important things won't open, such as my MalwareBytes program. When I try, a window will popup and say this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
The system could not find the environment option that was entered."
So, naturally, I try to find/open the Environments and Paths thing again, right? Nope. I can't open that either:
"Windows cannot find '%windir%\system32\SystemPropertiesAdvanced.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."
Even though I typed 'Environment' in my search bar to find it.
Then recently, Origin tried to install an update on my laptop, but it couldn't find the ProgramFiles, and so there was an error in installation. As a result of this, Chrome is not opening up immediately when I click it. It waits about five-six minutes after I've clicked it. I think it's what caused it, because it didn't do it before yesterday, when I tried to install the update.
So basically: how can I fix this despite knowing little to nothing about computers? How can I go into the Environments with... Read more

How to create m3u file from mp3s in different folders on your computer ?

It seems to only create mp3 playlist only from mp3s in the same folder.

I was interested to create playlist from different folders with different paths
to save to one m3u file, not m3u file in each folder from the mp3s within that folder.

I know I can edit the file so it goes to different paths using notepad, but that would defeat the purpose of this program making it easier to save playlst from diferent mp3s in diffrent folders.

So I've been trying to use system file checker, and encountered a problem where it can't repair a file. I found this page detailing how to manually fix the problem:

Use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

I was fine until step 2, where it says

"For example, type takeown /f E:\windows\system32\extremely_simplified_example.dll"

The problem is, my CBS.log file says stuff like:

Cannot repair member file [l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"
Unable to repair \SystemRoot\WinSXS\Manifests\\[l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"

and I don't know how to translate that into a path to use with the takeown command. I searched for that file using explorer and found a dozen different copies, so I'm not sure which one to replace.

Semi-related questions: Can I just replace them all? I'm planning on using a copy of the file from a similar system that works, is that ok?

Thanks!

A:Help understanding CBS.log file paths

Hello Southbound, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Those instructions there are fine, but just a bit vague. OPTION THREE in the tutorial below can help give you only the SFC results to help make it easier to go through.SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Next, the tutorial below can show you how to extract files from your installation disc to replace any listed files that SFC cannot repair.Extract Files from Windows 7 Installation DVD
Before doing anything, please post back and upload your sfcdetails.txt file to see what all may be wrong, and if it any file that cannot be repaired is worth worrying about.Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums
To help interrupt what it says to know the path:Cannot repair member file [l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"
Unable to repair \SystemRoot\WinSXS\Manifests\\[l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"
The first line says that SFC cannot repair the FWPKCLNT.SYS file.

The second line is the path of the file. "SystemRoot" is a variable "%SystemRoot%" that is actually just a shortcut for "C:\Windows". This leaves you with the file path as:C:\Windows\WinSXS\Manifests\FWPKCLNT.SYS
Doing a search on the C: drive for the listed FWPKCLNT.SYS file would help give you all of it's locations if needed as well.

Hope this helps for now,
Shawn

A:Invalid File Paths

Don't use registry cleaners. If you continue to use them, chances are that crashes will be among the least of your problems. Those things are junk, do only harm, and you should be thankful you were even able to reboot. Performance is not improved by using them, they remove needed entries, and they create their own "errors" so that they can "fix" them, making worse errors in the process.

Hello,

A little background first.

I have a shortwave radio that is of a new type where a lot of the functions such as filters, etc. is done via software that resides on the PC.

The radio is mfg. by the WINRADIO company.
The model of the radio is a G31 DDC

After playing with the radio, it automatically Saves the frequencies that you have listened to, and puts them into Memory to be able to recall them later.
The file that it creates is called "User Memory"..

I seem to have the User Memory File in the right place, I think, but the "path" to get there seems to be different.

I have one path of:
Libraries/ Documents/ WINRADIO/ G31 DDC/ User Memory

And another path of:
C:/ Users/ Bob/ My Documents/ WINRADIO/ G31 DDC/ User Memory

They both seem to lead to the correct file of User Memory.

a. My main question: Is there really only one file of User Memory, but two different ways or paths to get to it ?

b. What's with Libraries; I've never set that up ? What are they ?

c. Notice that one path has My "Documents", and the other just "Documents".

If anyone could explain this for me, I would be most appreciative.

Much thanks,
Bob

Hello! I recently upgraded my computer with an SSD for boot and main programs and use my 1TB HDD for general programs and media storage. The thing is I want it to by default install to my D:\ drive.

Now the only solution I see is editing the registry ProgramFilesDir - Which has some serious flaws. It will attempt to launch every program off of the D:\ drive even when it is stored on C:\ and about 9 out of 10 times, it still default installs to C:\.

Does anyone have a fix for this?

Thanks,

royeo

A:How do you interpret paths like C:\DOCUME~1\...

Hi.

This kind of path is contraction of the real folder or file names so that they are compatible with the old 8.3 DOS filename format. I don't know why it is necessary, but in (my) theory it works this way:
Long names are stripped of all spaces, even between words.
If the resulting string, without extension, is longer than 8 characters, the 6 leftmost characters are taken and an index appended, to distinguish between similar names.
So "ASDFGHJKLQWE" becomes "ASDFGH~1" while ASDFGHJKLRTZ" becomes "ASDFGH~2"

So the one you submitted translates to something like

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temp
Where username is different for each user of the computer.

I'm trying to set up Symantec Backup Exec 12 on Windows Server 2003. I want to be able to backup week 1 to X:\, week 2 to Y:\ and week 3 to Z:\ as Backup Exec requires each drive to maintain its own drive letter.

For example if I set drive 1 to X:\, the swap it out for drive 2 and assign that one to Y:\, when I plug in drive 1 it will mount as Y:\ rather than X:\ which I originally assigned it to.

Does anyone know how to get Windows to recognize that these are three separate drives and allow them to maintain their own drive letters?

Hi all,

I was hoping someone knowledgeable could clear up some confusion I have on the upgrade process. I've googled my questions and it seems there is no definitive answer and that Microsoft themselves seem to not be consistent on their treatment of upgrades.

I originally wasn't going to upgrade but at $39.99 for a Pro version, I can't resist. I am aware that you need a current install to upgrade. I was hoping that during the upgrade process I would be given an option to chose the key I wished to invalidate for the upgrade. Now, I am quite fond of my Windows 7 license and am going to keep it around in case I don't like Windows 8 and just because it is a great OS.

So my dilemma is as follows:
I have a couple full licenses for XP and Vista. I also have the OEM license of Vista Business that is on a sticker on my computer. I am resigned to the fact that I'll have to uninstall my current OS and install an old one for the upgrade and I can live with that.

I would, however, like to get rid of my most worthless license for the upgrade, which in my opinion is the one OEM one on a sticker on my laptop. So I guess the question is would the limitations of the OEM license, which is that it is only valid for that specific machine be attached to the upgraded version. As the Pro upgrade is for a limited time only, I imagine any future computer I will buy will have the Home version with it and I would like to preserve my access to the Pro version as well as to have the option to have a... Hello jaebberwock. Welcome to the Eight Forums.

You mentioned "in case I don't like Windows 8" so I guess you haven't used it yet.
Based on that assumption, I would suggest downloading Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation for free. (good for 90 days) Burn it to a dvd. Do you know anything about imaging? Do you have any external drives? I would consider learning a little about external drives so that you could make some images? Are you on a budget? Can you afford to spend a few bucks on imaging software? Search online for imaging software. You could image your XP system without affecting it by an upgrade. Same with Vista or Windows 7. Image what you want to save so that they could be returned to the condition they were in. I cannot help you with your questions about upgrading licenses and keys so maybe someone else will chime in. Personally, I am not a fan of dual booting, many problems could happen. Opinions vary.

Download Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation

From my point of view, I would image backup XP, Vista, Windows 7 using the software of your choice (perhaps something like Acronis). Then, install Windows 8 on unallocated space. Do you know what unallocated space is? I apologize. I know nothing about what you know. Anyway, good luck. There are tutorials here:

Hello everyone! New here with this problem, hope I'm entering it under the right category (if not, sorry)

I have a local and a network folder embeded in a tiddlywiki page in iframes.
They both contain folders, .doc and .xls files with both greek and english names.
I've set up the open office plugin to show the aforementioned files within browser, so the frames work as
a sort of view area (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=94384&page=2 ).

At the same time I need to be able to open the folders / files in their native windows environment.
The above configuration doesn't allow that as .doc and .xls links open in the open office environment by default.

A number of firefox add-ons (Open With 4.0 / https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/11097/,
IE Tab 2 / https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/92382/) provide the functionality to open firefox links in different browsers and/or programs.

I've set up explorer, winword.exe and excel.exe as manual entries in the Open With add-on which allows you to right click on firefox links and select to open them with these applications. Other add-ons allow you to do the same thing with internet explorer or a chosen application.

They all present the following problem:

The plugin works perfectly when opening the folder file:///C:/a with explorer
and the files file:///C:/a/a.doc with winword and file:///C:/a/a.xls with excel.exe.

But I get a path does not exist or is not a directory error when... Read more

I changed the user name from "user001" to "user888". That changed the name on the login/logout screens. But the user folders and paths all stayed with the old name "user001". As a result some things, like the name installed programs will grab and use, are still called "user001".

Is there a way, short of re-installing Windows, to change all the appropriate folders, paths and registry entries to read "user888" and get rid of the old user name completely?

A:Changing the User Folders (and paths)

You may want to create a new account and move the user files over to that new account. Then delete the old account.

Hi there,
I have been looking for a simple way to begin to understand the command line in windows. I'm trying to import python code from a folder, and at the moment I can only get my code to run if I save my folder in the default c:\Users\Jamie\<full path>. My question is in two parts
1. How can I run simple scripts from anywhere else (say, my documents)
2. Can I edit paths somehow such that typing % python <script name> will run my script, from the default C:\Users\Jamie, or otherwise?
Sorry if the questions themselves contain errors in understanding, i haven't used the Windows command before

A:Using PATHS in the command line in Windows 7

When I first installed Win 7 I simply went with the default user name of "Owner". I wouldn't mind changing it now but I'm concerned about the effect on my shortcuts and so on.

If I rename it, will Windows go through and automatically update all the shortcuts and program paths and so on? My gut reaction is "Of course it will" but I've learned to be cautious with Windows! Will I end up with a lot of tidying up to do?

A:Will changing username mess up paths?

Only the username will be changed. The c:\users\<username> path does not get changed and this can lead to more confusion.

Better method:

1) Create two new accounts. One in the username you want, and one temporary...you can even call it TEMP if you like.

2) Log in as TEMP. Use Windows Easy Transfer to migrate all files and settings from your old account to the new one you just created.

3) When this is complete, log in as your new user and make sure everything is there and working.

4) Delete your old user and TEMP.

I have a program that plays music on VB 2008 Express Edition. It accesses music from my memory stick because I'm going to need to move the program to another computer. However, the memory stick was always listed under the J:\ drive, but now randomly it's listed under the K:/ drive. Is there a way so that I can just get the music "into" the program so that it can just play the music no matter what computer it is on. P.S. I also need to get this program to run on XP, and the file path is E:\, I'm afraid that since mine changed randomly, the XP computer I'm moving it to will also change randomly.

Please Help!

A:File Paths Changing Randomly

You can change the drive letter by going to Administrative Tools in Control Panel and them going into Computer Management, there is a section called Disk Management which will show all connected drives, from there you can change the drive path.

I just ran a customized install of Office Ultimate 2007. I open Powerpoint, and tried to access the clipart library to insert a clipart image. It gives me an error saying it can't display the clipart, and tells me I have to run Setup again, and choose "Add & Remove Programs" to install the feature; but it doesn't say WHAT feature. I've done customized installs 100 times, and never had this issue. I've also got the Office12/Clipart folder on another partition from a past install. I have installed RocketDock on my computer and I want use animated icons to launch just about everything I need to do. They require a direct path. I can't create a "sound" shortcut and then change it to an animated icon, as far as I know.

The path for control panel is: C:\Windows\system32\control.exe

I'm looking for the path for the "sound" menu (playback tab, specifically).

I also want the paths for:

I've had the asian language pack installed on my laptop for awhile now and I know of a similar issue that involves the Korean won symbol, fortunately that never happened to me and I use my computer to type Korean frequently. I was attempting to get a program to run in Japanese to help out one of my friends, and after a restart; anywhere there's a file path it shows the &#65509; instead of \.

I know there's no difference aside from appearance, but it's really annoying to look at it.

I've uninstalled the program and looked around the Regional and Language options, policy settings, and about anywhere I can think of, maybe I missed it somewhere, but I can't find a way to revert it. Can anyone help? Thanks.

There is an Excel App on our network that gets used by multiple users. In this app there are some VLookups that pull information from other spreadsheets. The problem we are having is that the physical paths in the VLookups are being changed to relative paths. Instead of using L:\Files\somefile.xls it changes to \\server\share\somefile.xls.

When this happens the VLookup stops working, it's odd because both paths are legetimate but only the one with the physical path works. This is happening on several different spreadsheets and the formulas have to continualy remapped.

All users are using Office 97 but the OS are mixed, Win ME, 2000 and 98. Any ideas?

Here are the Vlookups:

Before
=VLOOKUP($C18,'L:\shared files\[EmpDataLog.xls]RATE'!$B$10:$AZ$642,5)

After
=VLOOKUP($C18,'\\server01\shared files\[EmpDataLog.xls]RATE'!$B$10:$AZ$642,5)

Hi friends!

I'm experiencing a very strange bug with a custom library. On the odd occasion when I open an explorer pane and navigate to my library on the left-hand side, two of my included folders - which are both located in 'C:\Program Files\...' will change to a non-existent 'C:\Program Files (x86)\...' version of the same folder. If I click on that folder in the library pane it will tell me the folder doesn't exist.

It happens infrequently but often enough to be annoying. It's not immediately clear what causes it or why it stops. When it happened just now I closed all open explorer panes and opened a new one, and the library displayed the correct 'non x86' folder structure.

Any idea what causes this and how it can be avoided?

Thanks!

Ok so here is the setup.  I have a Server 2008 R2, one old Windows Server 2003 acting as a nas and Windows 7 clients with the exception of one windows xp machine.  No matter what I do, when I click Network on the left side of the Windows 7 Explorer
window, it will create a list of all the workstations and the 2k3 server but it will never show the Server 2008.  No matter what I do.  I've turned on Computer Browser, I've disabled the firewall on the server, nothing.  It shows every workstation
and the 2k3 server but never the 2k8 Server.  Builds a nice list of the network but never shows the 2k8 Server.  I have lost my mind trying to solve this problem.  The Windows XP machine sees it, my one loan vista machine that comes in once
in a a while sees it under network places, but the Windows 7 machines will never show it.

If someone can explain if i'm losing my mind or am I the only one that has this issue.

To reitterate, a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine will not show up on the list of network computers when you click Network on the left side of a Windows 7 explorer window.  Also yes, Network Discovery and the Computer Browser are both turned on on the
server and the workstations.  Also the Server sees everyone else but not itself.

A:Server does not appear under network

Hi,
Network discovery requires that the DNS Client, Function Discovery Resource Publication, SSDP Discovery, and UPnP Device Host services are started, you may check this on both sides to make sure they are started.

i have a current network setup of modem>router>winxp and win98se comps.
i recently scored an old comp (not worth a cent) aparently was top of the range in 95 and had an upgrade a few years ago, anyhow its a piece of junk, im not too sure what system features it has, its just old school architecture inside. anyhow, what im thinking of doing is running that as my internet network server kinda thing. so ill install two network cards into it, so it will go modem>shitboxcomp-networkcard1>through shitboxcomp>out shitboxcomp networkcard2>router then two my two other comps. this i think would be better for running my broadband net connection by being able to use the ISP login client and not having to worry about the router having the job of loging on. my real question is what OS should i run on the shitboxcomp? i have some distros of linux but my loginclient isnt supported and im not interested in linux just yet. i have a choice of installing win98se or winxp home, which would be better? win98se would be easier for me, but would this still allow me to set it up as easily as i can through winxp, im not too sure the comp would even support winxp anyhow.

G'day everyone

Under Windows XP I used a program called Piky Basket which had a right-click feature that allowed me to copy the full paths of selected files to the clipboard. This feature worked on multiple files, even in search results from e.g. Windows' own search utility and e.g. Voidtools' Everything. I want to be able to do the same in Windows 7.

Sadly, Piky Basket does not work on my system (Win7, 64), and the version of Piky Basket that does work on my system doesn't have this feature anymore.

The built-in "Copy as path" in Windows does work on multiple files, but only if those files are all in the same folder (which is not the case in search results). The same applies to SendTo Toys -- can only copy multiple paths if they're all in the same folder.

Dengdun's OpenXX works fine on search results, but copies a maximum of 15 paths (why???).

Jarle Aase's CopyPath copies only one path at a time... and this applies to many of the nameless similar utilities floating about the web.

Ninotech Path Copy insists on installing the 32 bit version of it (even if I remove the previous version), and does not add anything to the context menu that I can see.

Any ideas about how I can copy full paths of files to the clipboard, even in search results?

Thanks
Samuel

PLJ Soft's ClipName also copies only multiple files if they are all in the same folder.
Context Magic does not seem to work in Windows 7.

Hi everyone,

I got a new HP Pavilion laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. When I booted it up for the first time, there was already an administrator account on it named after the company who sent me the laptop. I renamed the user account and the computer to my name. Unfortunately, this change was not taken over by my profile folder or the profile folder paths. For example, if I go to the C drive and to "Users", then there's the Public folder and underneath it is my profile folder (which has a lock icon) - stuck with the previous name. I can access it and see the picture, music, desktop etc. folders with my stuff in them. I wanted to save a Word Document, and the username in the path was the old one, so that's how I first noticed the issue.

I searched and asked around and found out that I'd have to create a new user account and delete the old one to fix this issue. I came across two sets of instructions. I found one set over here in this Microsoft document for Windows 7 - it is about replacing a corrupted user profile, and it says that one would need THREE user accounts to do it...Very confusing...obviously, my user profile is not corrupt, but it looks like I have to replace it:

The second set of instructions I came across simply said that I'd have to do the following:

Hello all,

I am rather curious about the correct way to use environment variables on Windows, and I have some questions regarding what some terms mean. I find it much quicker to get things done via the command line some times, but the big stopper is having to type in really long path names. For instance, I just followed some instructions for an application server I've been looking at and the first thing it asked me to do after extracting and moving the files is to populate the home environment variable at machine level with the relevant files in my case using the SETX program name>file location -M command. What exactly did that do? And then I tried to set an environment variable for the .net framework tool InstallUtil.exe for Windows services since I use it quite often, and I hate having to call the program folder followed by the .net framework location plus the InstallUtil.exe with the service name being installed tacked on the end. That did not work, yet the setting of the first variable did. What is the difference between the two? And also, what is the difference between using the GUI versus using the command line SETX? and when looking at a list of the system variables and user environment variables from the GUI, I find it hard to figure out which each is and what they do. Some clarification would be wonderful. Thanks.
