Win 7 Transfer Large Files over Network CRASH!

Q: Win 7 Transfer Large Files over Network CRASH!

I have recently purchased at New Computer running W7 Home Premium. So As most people do I am transferring all my files from my XP home Edition SP2 System over a simple home network.

When I tried to move something more that's more than 1 gig over to the W7 machine.. the New system freezes up every time and then shows me the Blue Screen of Death and reboots itself. If I stay under that amount of data everything works fine.

Is this a common problem with Windows 7?? and is there a work around to this?

Looking for advice..

Thanks

Not a common problem. Are you using "homegroup"?

I'm having a problem when transferring large files between my network, and not sure what the cause is.

I'm trying to transfer files from my wired desktop to my wireless laptop, and smaller files seem to transfer okay. Whenever I try to transfer a really large file, however, the internet and connectivity totally drops on my desktop (which is giving the file) and causes the laptop to lose the file. The desktop computer stays offline for about 1-2 minutes afterward before it either starts up again on its own or I reset the network adapter. I suppose it's important to note as well that the file transfer can fail at the very beginning, in the middle, or even at the very end, but my desktop computer always loses its connection whenever the interruption happens... but sometimes it can successfully get almost all the way through the file transfer.

http://forums.techguy.org/networking/768807-cannot-copy-___-specfied-network.html
I tried following some of the steps in this case to confirm that I can ping and do all that jazz to my laptop and all of the services are running, since our problems seem similar. I've disabled all firewalls as well. However, since one computer is actually wired to the router, I don't think the solution will be quite the same.

Anyway, looking for some help, and glad to provide any additional information that I can. Let me know what I can do.

This is really beginning to frustrate me. Anytime I try to copy a file from my windows xp desktop to my windows 7 laptop, the download speed will decrease until it finally pops up with a message saying, "the connection to \\computer name has been lost, please check the network and try again. This only occurs when trying to copy over large files. The problem does not exist on my windows xp desktop, I am able to copy over large files from the windows laptop without any sort of problem. I have tried connecting the laptop directly to the router but that doesn't fix anything. Please help! Maybe I could try installing a wireless card in the desktop and put the two computers in ad-hoc mode?

The laptop is a dell 1440 Inspiron and the router is a Belkin wrtg54g.

Are y ou using "homegroup" for networking? Sometimes on some mixed OS networks homegroup has a problem with connectivity and slow downs.

You can verify if it is the problem by making a new network connection using "workgroup" and see if the problem still exists. If it does not you can disable IPv6 and kill homegroup.

I want to transfer some big files from my laptop to my desktop pc (both win xp), i have set up a direct link with a parallel cable setting the laptop as the host. However, when i log on to the laptop i cannot seem to find the shared c drive in network places. I am pretty sure that all my workgroup settings are correct and both user accounts have administrative privilages. I remember getting a message at one point when i asked to find other workgroup computers saying that the mshome is not available and that the user may not have access to it but i am sure that i have given each user account full access. Any ideas?

You can try mapping the drive instead of sharing. Browse to the other computer via Network PLaces. Right click HD on other computer and select map network drive. It will ask for a drive letter, select whatever you want. Once mapped, I believe the drive will appear in My computer.

for some reason i cannot transfer large files (700MB to over 1GB) from a Windows Server 2008 R2 Essentials box to a Windows 7 Pro client.  It just doesn't work; it hangs.  When I try to upload to the server the file copies to 99% with 5 seconds left then hangs for a while then says the file transfer failed.

any ideas as to what could cause this.  just to mention, small files transfer fine ( up to 10MB or so).

I have a laptop I use at home and a mini laptop that I travel with. I record TV shows with the laptop and move them to the mini to watch them on the road.

the programs are about 3 gb for a half hour show, 7 gb for an hour. I've been moving them one or two at a time on an 8 gb card, but that's kind of a pain. It takes 5 mins for each half hour show.

I have a wireless home network, but that takes an hour to move one half hour show.

Is there a faster way to move the files from one computer to another? Like ethernet cards or something?

ETA: I have windows 7 on both computers.
Thanks!

A:need to connect two computers to transfer large files.

Why not just use a large USB drive, you could even use a folder sync program on the media recording computer to automatically copy the media folder to the external drive and watch them on the road. 2.5" USB drives also don't require external power.

Hi, I'm hoping for some help with something odd.

I have a Vista 64x workstation since Nov 08 which has been fine until recently. It has started having network problems when accessing large numbers of files from remote locations.

I have a readyNAS network storage device with a number of shares which are mounted as network drives on the PC, wired ethernet. Vista is set up as a private network and set to trust the LAN. The readynas is flawless when accessed from other XP and Vista machines on the LAN.

Recent example, tried loading on photos from a camera, approx 700 files.
Went fast at first, but over 300 files, copying would slow to a crawl - 16Kb.
While this is happening, other LAN access and internet access becomes intermittent.

If I use picasa, which accesses all photos on the remote drive, it'll work for a while but then crawl, only in this case the whole machine slows down.

I've tried disabling auto-tuning but that made no difference.

LAN has a NAT firewall (Netgear FWG114P with latest firmware) and there is no software firewall running. PC: Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz, 8Gb 800MHZ RAM, Sapphire 512Mb Radeon HD 4670, Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit.

A:64x Wired network dropping off on large no of file transfer.

Can anyone help? This is infuriating!

I have disabled IPv6 and auto-tuning.

(I long ago did the steps here: Auto Tuning - TCP/IP receive level and it made no difference).
Even though all the other machines on the network are fine I've pulled the infrastructure apart. Router updated to latest firmware, router checks out OK on vista compatibility checker, the switch has been checked and double checked + direct connection made, the LAN cables have been swapped out. This same machine has a ubuntu dual boot, so the same hardware in a different OS works absolutely faultlessly, and a VMware XP install on ubuntu also works faultlessly.

It feels like it can ONLY be vista ultimate 64!! There is something about this OS which is causing problems, but it started after the machine was 3 months old. Vista update maybe?

Just installed Win7 64 Home Pro from XP two days ago.
The last remaining issue I need to solve is a drag and drop file transfer to my other home network computer (HNC).

So far I've been able to d&d files from the HNC via Acronis WD in it's explorer mode without any issues, some sized in the multi Gb range. I've been also able to d&d small files directly to the HNC successfully.

When I try to d&d a large file, specifically my NVIDIA drivers sized at 123Mb the Win7 computer freezes immediately. The cursor is stuck and the computer is absolutely locked, the only thing that works to recover it is the power off button.
When I come back I don't get any indication of anything going wrong and if I look on the HNC drive the file has been transferred successfully!

I haven't tried copying files to the HNC via Acronis WD yet so I don't know if it will be able to write to it.

The HNC computer has not caused any issues in the past with XP, it's running Ubuntu Linux.

Thanks for anyone's input.

A:Home Network Large File Transfer Lockup

As a suggestion, test what happens when you attempt the drag 'n' drop operation in [safe mode + net].

The most likely problem causes are a bad anti-virus filter driver, or a NIC driver which needs updating.

C drive has only 5.65 GB left now so is running a bit slower which affects the smoothness of playing the clip.

The F drive has 171 GB free space but when I try to drag and drop or "send to" my F drive the system says there is not enough room on the disk !!!

So, I want to know if there's a software that will allow me to quickly copy/move my file while being sure to avoid file corruption?

Or, at least, can you give me advice on how to transfer all my data?

Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my windows vista (ultimate x64).
It crashes in BSoD every time I try to download one or more large files at once (>=100Mb), or when I surf on many internet pages at once (e.g. when I start Opera and it opens 10 tabs simultaneously).

Anyone has the same problem/a solution please? That would be so great.

I hope it's not due to my hardware, since it's a new computer, but I had another o/s before (XP) on the same computer, and it didn't crash.

I hope you guys can save me =)

System was perfectly stable for such a long time...

A couple of months back, Firefox started crashing whenever I attempted any kind of file download or page save, from any site. For a while I could work around using DownThemAll plugin. Then that crashed too. For a while , I could get downloads by switching to Chrome or IE. Now every browser crashes at every attempted download. The crash occurs when a "where to save" window tries to open: depending on browser, it occurs instantly or after opening a messed-up explorer window.

Thunderbird also crashes if I attempt to save an attached file. However, I can drag attachments to desktop to retrieve them. So maybe it's invoking the "where to save" window that's the problem?

With both browser and mailer, everything is fine on program restart - Windows and other programs seem unaffected.

I have kept Norton 360 fully updated, and accepted all Windows updates. Have run ccCleaner, Glary registry cleanup and Malwarebytes. Some junk found, but problem not resolved. Below are Windows failure reports from the three browsers. Any help would be very much appreciated!

I have a ton of media I'd like to transfer over to an external HDD.
I don't want to simply select a bunch of folders and drag n drop over to the backup drive tho, I want to select individual files (or folders) and save them into their respectively named folders on the backup drive.

If I do this with the default windows file copy manager (via the drag n drop method) I'll end up with dozens of "File Transfer" windows, each with its own percent completion status, and it tends to choke out my machine.

Is there a 3rd party software that will allow me to individually select the files/folders I want and add them to a queue, then batch transfer the whole list to a user-specified destination path?

I'm thinking an FTP client but that seems a little overkill. Kinda looking for something simple and easy.

I'm having 3 massive problems on my pc that I can't figure out First of all the title is a bit misleading, as I actually have three issues and I'm unsure if they are related. The first one below at the moment is the most important. I believe possibly the 2nd and 3rd problems are the result of Klite Codec Pack http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm and maybe a failing DVD Burner.1. Every time I attempt to transfer large files over my home network to this PC it locks up. The other 5 PCs on my network have 0 problems transferring large files.2. Intermittently my computer locks up when viewing streaming media on the internet (video or sound). It doesn't happen often but enough to make me think something is up.3. When I attempt to burn files to a DVD/CD the burn fails the verification check. (Used Nero, ImgBurner, and MagicISO) Previously burns have been no problem.Could these problems be related to some sort of malware infection? I've checked my system for spyware using Super AntiSpyware and Spybot Search & Destroy and I've checked it for viruses with BitDefender Total Security and Kaspersky (online scan) so far everything is clean. Hi, I would appreciate any suggestions on a problem I'm having. I have a USR access point/router (USR8022) and a desktop and a notebook, both with wireless cards, hooked up to it. The desktop has a D-Link 802.11b card and the notebook has a USR 22 Mbps (802.11b) card. I can access the shares/printers on each computer...I can even open really small text files. But If I try to open a slightly larger file (300 KB) it cranks for a while and gives me an error. If I plug either computer directly into the lan port on my router (through the ethernet card on the computer) and leave the other computer wireless, it works fine. It seems to be something weird about the 2 different wireless cards communicating or something. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Guys is there any way I can share large amount of files over the network?
I tried sharing the folder over the network but that gives a max speed of 2 MB/s. Is there anything I can do to get faster speeds?

A:Share large files over the local LAN network?

How are the computers connected to the network? Wired or wireless?

If wired, use good quality Cat5 or better cable. Ensure computers/routers have gigabit speed ports. How long is the cable run?

If wireless, what wifi standard are the adapters and router using, 802.11 N? How far are the computers from the router?

Are you sharing these files or just trying to copy them? If just copying, try a program like teracopy to see if it will provide better performance.

This is my set up. I have my PC running Windows 7, connected through wireless to the internet and my home network via Apple Airport Extreme. I have a harddrive connected to the Airport Extreme acting as a network drive.

I can see the network drive, and I pull files of all sizes from it, but I have not been able to push large files to it. I can push smaller files to it with no issues (so far success with up to 706MB). I tried pushing a 1.4GB video file to it and it keeps giving me the error message: "There is a problem accessing A:\ Make sure you are connected to the network and try again"

I have an iMac hooked up to the network. I can push the same 1.4GB video file from my PC to the iMac over the wireless network. I just cannot push it onto the network harddrive. While I have no problems pushing large files onto the network harddrive from my iMac.

So in summary:
Pushing large files from PC to network harddrive - Failed
Pushing large files from PC to iMac - Success
Pushing large files from iMac to network harddrive - Success

I've tried disabling autotuning - no change.

In short, when I try copying large files ( > 1.0 GB) from my PC (wireless AC) to my NAS (ethernet), the connection drops sometimes (the sometimes is the irritating part.
- I have a Asus wireless AC adapter on this PC.
- It is more likely to happen if I am downloading other files (from the internet) while I am trying to copy this file (and this makes sense), however I would think it would just go slower (when I have more network traffic) - not just drop the connection.
I tried...
- Replaced every cable to Cat-6 within the past month.
- On my adapter I disabled the IPv6 (as I read that can cause connectivity problems).
- Updated the router's firmware. The router is an Asus RT-AC68u

I have a second PC with a wireless AC adapter and tried copying a large file to my NAS (ethernet), and the connection also dropped.
I don't know if this is a Windows 7 issue or if my router settings need to be adjusted to correct this. I did disable the IPv6, and I thought that would take care of it. If anyone can offer some suggestions, that would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Have you tried LAN to LAN transfer (don't use your Wireless NIC) and see if the drops happen? If not, there might be issues with WLAN and you may need to update drivers for your Wireless NIC.

I posted this in the Business Applications, but someone there suggested I post it here since it seems to be more of a networking issue:

I've got a PC on my network running Windows XP Pro and Office XP. When attempting to save extremely large Excel files (one is 13MB and the other is 72MB - they're full of [email protected]$#@ charts) to a network folder, Excel locks up. Additionally, when the user opens these files, it's common for Excel to report it's repairing the file. Saving to the local hard drive works fine.

This mess seemed to start after we upgraded our NT4 file server to Windows Server 2003. The Windows Server 2003 was set up by a MSCE, which I am not. I'm self taught, and this is my first exposure to server operating systems beyond NT4. The server is configured to be a DNS and PDC, as well as Active Directory. It's the only Windows server we have.

I got the Buffalo LinkStation(network storage) yesterday.I immediately connected it to my router, and set it up.All worked fine until I tried to move my movie collection(average file size 700 MB).It first said it will take 5 minutes, but after 1 minute it froze, saying it couldnt connect to the LinkStation. My Laptop(Vista Home Premium 32bit,Asus X72V) then disconnected from the router(also no internet).after reconnecting i tried a music file, which was transferred in a matter of seconds.
My other Laptop doesnt disconnect, although writing to Linkstation is awfully slow...

What can i do?
(In the moment i directly connect over ethernet-less than a hour for 50 GB-i have a modern laptop,300 mb wlan)

Hello,

I'm sharing a folder on a Windows XP computer with 15,000 sub-folders/files over a small network. This folder used to be hosted in Windows Server 2003 machine. But after I made the switch to XP, accessing the shared folder over the network takes over 1 minute for the files to list.

Does anyone know what might be causing this slow performance? And is it related to the XP operating system?

Any tips and advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ralph

Hi all!

Can someone help me set up a PC-to-PC LAN? Both computers have NIC's that run on XP Home and quite simply I don't know where to begin.

I have endlessly searched the internet for a step-by-step guide setting it all up but to no avail, I havenít been successful. I have a cat5 crossover and straight through cable and was wondering if someone would kindly help a beginner sort out her dilemma in setting it up?

A:Network/Transfer Files

Use the crossover cable.

Go into control Panel and run the Network Setup Wizard

about to do a major hardware upgrade on one of the win7 PCs in the house (will call it PC A), pretty much building a new computer so expecting to have to do a reinstall of the os like i did when upgrading my gaming pc (which will be PC B ). trying to backup important files on PC A by copying them over the network to PC B but am so far unsuccessful.

both computers are running 64bit win7 ultimate.
both can see each other and access each others shares fine.
just can't copy files over.

trying to copy the files from PC A to one of the slave drives on PC B
on both PCs: the drives are shared, network discovery is on, password protected sharing is off, file and printer sharing is on.
also tried going directly to the folder on PC B and setting the permissions so that 'everyone' had 'full control'

i don't see anything that would cause an issue. yet when i am on PC A trying to copy files to PC B it says that i need permission to copy the files.
anybody have any ideas?

if possible, i'd rather fix the problem so i could send them from PC A to PC B instead of having to copy everything to the public documents folder in PC A and using PC B to grab them.

A:can't transfer files over network

What is the file path for these files?

If they are in My Docs/Settings folders...you may have to specifically enable those folders to be shared between systems.

I found this out some time ago when sharing files between my XP computers...even though I have the entire drive and all contents marked as shared, Windows will not let me access those folders from the other system (I have two) unless I specifically share Docs/Settings, Desktop, etc. folders via the Sharing/Security tab from Explorer view.

Once done, it's no problem to access/copy/move from the other system.

All other files should be easily accessed, etc. if you have set the drive/partition up in shared status properly.

Hello folks. I'm trying to use the F&S Transfer Wizard for the first time. I have three computers: a generic desktop, Toshiba Satellite Notebook and Compaq Presario M2000, all connected via a Toshiba PCX5000 cable modem/wireless router.

The Compaq is the newest and I'd prefer to use it rather than my Toshiba (my wife uses the desktop). I have a home network set up and want to transfer my F&S from the Toshiba to the Compaq over the network. However, every time I try XP tells me it can't find my Compaq. What am I missing/doing wrong? Is it something obvious and basic?

Many thanks!

I have networked a new PC for my husband with mine. Both PCs have WindowsXP Pro installed. I have Windows Firewall turned off on both PCs as they connect to a modem/router which has its own firewall. I have Use Simple File Sharing enabled.

I have made a new folder on each PC and shared it. Both PCs can see the shared folder across the network. If I put a file in his shared folder on my PC, from his PC he can access it from his PC. However, if he tries to transfer a file to the shared folder on my PC (and vice versa) we get an Access Denied:Make sure disc is not full or write protected and that file is not currently in use.

Can someone tell me how to get around this pesky little problem?

Hi everyone, looking forward to using this site and any help I may be able to get, here is my setup:

Old laptop with all my files is running Windows Vista.

New laptop I got is running Windows 7.

Both are connected on the same wireless network (same router and modem).

I am looking for an easy way to copy and paste several folders and gigs worth of music, movies and photos to the new laptop with Windows 7.

Is there a step-by-step guide on how to get these two laptops to recognize each other, and then access the files on Vista to copy and paste into Windows 7?

I tried a bit on my own and couldn't even see the new laptop listed in Vista, so here I am asking for help!

A:Transfer files from Vista to Windows 7 on same network

Long story: Set Up Your Home Network, Windows 7 Edition

Short description for Vista file sharing.

Go into the network and Sharing Center from the Control Panel or from the Network icon in the Notification Area. Your network must be designated 'Private.' In the Sharing and Discovery section you can configure File sharing, Public folder sharing (similar to Shared Documents in previous Windows), Printer sharing and Password protected sharing.

Vista requires that a user account be password protected before it will permit file sharing.

You must uninstall or properly configure any non-windows firewall (security suite).

Short description for Windows 7 file sharing:

Go into the Network and Sharing Center from the Control Panel or from the Network icon in the Notification Area. Your network must be designated 'Home' (or 'Work'). Click on Change advanced sharing settings. In the Home or Work section you can configure File and printer sharing, Public folder sharing, and Password protected sharing.

You must uninstall or properly configure any non-windows firewall (security suite).

A:How to transfer files over a wireless network in Windows XP Home?

Sending 25GB over a wireless network is going to take many hours, even if you have the faster protocols.

Since it sounds like you have a wireless router, it most likely also has wired ports on the back of it. Use the wired Ethernet ports for a faster and more reliable connection. The transfer will still take hours, but fewer hours. Plus, your setup will probably be easier.

As for the instructions you say that do not work, those are step-by-step instructions. What do you want from us?

Simply drag and drop the folder(s).

Hi,

I have recently started having a problem with FTP transfers on large (over about 6mb) files to my CNC machine.

I have a single CNC machine I use for little personal machining jobs that takes programs from a windows computer, I have recently upgraded my transfer PC from NT to XP, I have no firewall and am using WSFTP to transfer the files.

If the file is over about 6mb WSFTP will get to about 80% or so then just stop, the connection doesnt drop it just stops transfering, I have tried various other FTP programs, but they all show the same problem.

The machine is the same as it was, and the only thing that has changed is the OS on the PC, NT to XP, is there any reason why this could be happening?, I have run out of all ideas.

I began transferring a ton of files from one drive to another. I had to stop about half way through. When resuming, I constantly get the pop-up noting that files alreay exist in the "to" location and further asks if I wish to write over. I either have to click "yes," "yes to all" or "no." I don't want to say yes to all because if so, I will have wasted about 3 hours. I don't want to click "no" every 10 seconds either.

Is there a way to get "no for all" so it will only copy over files that do not already exist in the "to" location? How do I work that out?

A:transfer a large amount of data

The problem is not with software. The problem is with the fact that your computer can only process so much data, when moving it from one drive to another. It is all about how those drives are connected, how fast of a CPU you have, how much RAM you have, how much available space on the drive in your computer and the ones you are moving data too and from for buffer space. Last is what the drives are rated, along with enclosures for max data allowed.

Greetings.

I am having trouble with my computer rebooting while trying to copy large files (700 MB) from a CD to the hard drive.

I had this problem about 6 months ago when I was copying files from my Tivo to my PC. I am trying to copy to the same hard drive now that was giving me trouble then.

Here's a bit more detail.

6 months ago:
I copied 10 (?) hour-long shows from my Tivo to my computer. Each file was around 1 GB. While trying to copy #11 (?), the computer would reboot. It did this no matter how many times I tried. I finally gave up.

Now:
I've deleted those Tivo files to free space on my hard drive. I'm trying to copy 21 700 MB files to the hard drive. I've been able to copy 17. While trying to copy #18, the computer reboots. It has done this 3 times in a row.

There is a different amount of free space now while experiencing the problem than there was when I had the problem 6 months ago.

The hard drive is a secondary hard drive used for data storage.

Any ideas?

Thanks.
Ryan

Hi, My file transfer into WD external hard drive using usb 3.0 gets cut off half way through if large transfer is done (> 1GB). The speed will slowly drop to 0 Mb/s and then the hard disk will be disconnected with an error. Transferring files into the drive of any size has no issue at all. The above is OK if connected to usb 2.0 ports in my win 7 desktop. Anyone has any idea? Thanks.

DETAILED PROBLEM STATEMENT
I keep my personal data folder ("Cliff," ~42GB, many files and subfolders) in the Public Folder on my Desktop PC. In the past (2-3 months ago) I was able to copy this folder across the LAN to the Public folder on my Laptop for those times when I needed to travel with the Laptop.

Now, when I attempt to copy the 42MB folder FROM the Public Folder on my Desktop TO the Public folder on my Laptop, some files/folders get transferred, but the connection fails within 1-5 seconds of initiating the copy. Error 0x80070035 eventually shows up. And, the connection is pitifully slow, ranging from xxKBPS to no higher than 8MBPS.

SOLUTIONS ATTEMPTED
1) Administrative Services-Routing and Remote Access switched from a default of Disabled, to Automatic. Made no difference.
2) Network Magic from Purenetworks/Cisco installed. It helped a little in the sense that more files/folders were copied before the disconnect of the laptop from the LAN. Ultimately not helpful. Now uninstalled.
3) Net Config Server shows Idle Session Time of 15 minutes, the default value. Since my timeouts happen within 1-2 minutes, this would seem to be OK.
4) SpeedGuide TCP/IP Setting for Vista used on Desktop PC (SpeedGuide.net :: TCP Optimizer / Downloads). This appeared to enable me to copy a smaller version (31GB) of the Cliff folder yesterday. But today, cannot copy the remaining 11GB before LAN disconnect.
Thank you for all help!

File transfer achieved after setting Receive Window Autotune to Disabled on the Desktop PC that was the source of the files. The tutorial was very helpful.

File transfer speed for this Gigabit network still very disappointing at only 4-5 MBPS.

Did not try Restricted or High settings due to time consuming nature of large file transfer.

Setting Receive Window Autotune to Disabled on the Laptop PC that was the destination of the files helped very slightly.

Any suggestions for increasing LAN speed would be much appreciated.

I have a HP HPE-510t. It is running windows 10, clean install. I have a 240GB SSD, a 1TB SATA drive, and a 3TB SATA drive. All are NTFS formatted. If I transfer a 1GB file to the 3TB drive it makes it to 50% lightning quick and then slows down so slow it looks like it has stopped. Other two drives work fine. Files 560MB and smaller transfer fine. I don't know where the exact breaking point is between 560 and 1GB. Transfers to that drive do the same thing whether it's from those drives, a USB drive, or the network. Can this motherboard just not handle a larger than 2TB drive? I tried to find a BIOS update, but there's not one. Can't find an answer, going crazy, please help!

Hi,
I bought a new laptop with Windows XP in it, I wanted to transfer some files from my Desktop PC which has Vista to my laptop with XP, I bought a Belkin USB Data Transfer Cable to transfer files with help of Windows Easy Transfer but when I installed the soft provided with it, it seemed that I can only transfer files from XP to Vista, but not the opposite. Is there a solution or must I go back to my retailer? Those unfinished Microsoft's products really annoy me.
Is there a soft which can do the same without changing the cable?
Thanks.

A:Transfer files from Vista to XP with Windows Easy Transfer

Did you install software on both?
Generally you will need to do so.

The simple approach if you have a router is just to make sure that the network name is same on both computers, then enable file and print sharing and make sure that the LAN and file and print sharing are not blocked by the firewalls on either machine and share the drive or folders you want and then you can see them in my network places , view workgroup computers on the other computer.

You can also do this with an ethernet crossover cable ,just connecting the ethernet cards of the two (*a crossover cable has the wires at opposite ends re arranged so the in wires on one end connect to the out on the other and vice versa)
Both windows and vista have file and settings transfer wizards and networking wizards designed to make this easier; but you can just do it all manually.

With your product did it say it was vista compatible?

Over time (the last year) I have altered my config and even wiped the OS and did a clean install. My problem is I would like to move some data files out of the Mig configuration to a useable format, but when I try to use easy transfer, it wants to bring over the user files as well to my c:. The problem with this is I have a very small c: that just has the os on it. Easy transfer wants to bring over 57 GB of user and system files that I don't want, and won't fit on the drive. The program will not allow me to choose another drive (other than c or not bring the system and user files over. It will not allow me to bring the files I want without these. It's sort of a weird problem, really. I have a mac with OS X connected to a vista PC through an ethernet cable. I'm able to access and copy folders with the pc, but when I do, only a small amount of the files are transferred. I'll tell it to copy a folder with several gigabytes, and it will successfully transfer like 100 mb. I need to transfer about 110 gb. I split it into a bunch of different folders, trying to do each one separately, but to no avail. No error message, or any other indication that there is a problem. It's as if vista simply ignores the majority of the files I'm trying to transfer. Any hints as to what might be happening? Thanks in advance <3

Hi.

I run Windows XP, and just checked drive C:\ (which contains my OS). That drive is okay.

The problem is, each time I intend to copy or move a file from one drive to another drive of my PC (external USB drives or internal IDE drives), the file transfer never completes, it always halts - mostly at the end of the last file (in case of several files). The file(s) cannot be opened at that time, I furst have to restart the system.

If I transferred via Windows Explorer, the Explorer crashes, too. If I transfer via the file browser of another program (WinRar, and drag'n'drop, etc.), that program crashes, too.

I feel helpless, because I cannot transfer any file anymore, without having first to restart the OS to complete the transfer or to remove the blocked file handle.

Help very welcome.

Ok, I have 5 computers on a home network, 4 Windows XP and one Redhat Linux Fedora Core 4. About a month ago, one of the windows boxes suddenly went from about 550Kb/s download to 100Kb/s download from various newsgroups. Also, when trying to pull AND push files to that same box, it is a very slow file transfer.

I didn't load any new software in that time and I waited so long because at the time, the newsgroup server that I am using reported problems associated with Hurricane Rita. This of course doesn't explain the network speed.

I've run speed tests on all the other computers, and they all report download speeds of about 550Kb/s and upload speeds of about 45Kb/s except the one, and it has download speeds of about 100Kb/s and upload speeds the same, about 45Kb/s.

After I noticed the speed reduction, I loaded a firewall, ** Protowall ** and I downloaded the latest beta of Microsoft Anti-Spyware and ran it. Also, I have Norton with the latest updates and it reports no problems.

Please, let me know if you need more info or if someone had any general tips to try. I am about at the end of my rope and reformatting looks like the only other option to me.

Thanks!

Mike in Ohio

Edit: Forgot to say, I went to 3 differnt speed testing web sites, and they all report the download speed the same on that one box, about 100Kb/s and the others are around 500Kb/s

A:1 computer on a network suddenly now has slow file transfer on internet and network

Are all the computers wired similarly? All run to the same router/switch?

You should check the cable of the problematic machine, try using ping to the router with 1400 byte packets. Also, boot up some CD Linux or equivalent and see what speeds you get from there - helps to rule out any problems with the operating system.

This sounds really noobie of me but is it possible to improve local network transfer speed by adding a 2nd network card. I was planning to connect one exclusively for lan transfers and another one hooked to a separate wireless router.

Right now only a maximum of 3 users can stream SD videos off the PC before it gets a little choppy.

The pc in question runs on windows 7 and it's board has built in gigabit, I happen to have a spare gigabit card.

A:Will adding a 2nd network card improve local network transfer speed

That won't really help the way you are describing the problem, although adding access points will help with streaming to wireless devices.

Although there is a setting in Group Policy that allows you to use two connections at the same time, I don't believe it will help in this situation.

I've done many HD movie streaming tests on my system.

I can stream from my media PC to at least 7 other machines at the same time, 4 wired, 3 wireless, plus my TV, and have no problems at all, no skipping, no freezing, even with the same movie in the same place or with 8 different movies at once, my TV is connected to my media center PC so counts as the 8th one.

This is Gb LAN, and 300Mbps wireless but even the 65Mbps limited laptop has no problem.

I'm not really sure why you are seeing these limitations but it may be the router.

Hello,

Is there I can find out a list of the programs that were open on my taskbar before my computer crashed? I tend to have lots of documents open (esp. text files I'm reading - i.e. not editing - for research purposes) and when my computer crashes or is forced to reboot, the only way I can guess which files I had previously open is by doing a Windows file search for files accessed in the past few days.

This doesn't always help - esp. as I hibernate my computer lots and files may be open and unchanged for several day.

Sometimes, when I'm about to crash, I quickly take a screen-dump of my taskbar or the task manager list of programs so I know which windows/files I had open... but isn't there a log of some sort somewhere containing information on which files were active at a particular time, just before a restart or system crash?

(I don't mean the program that caused the crash; I know I can find out about the crashing program from event viewer. I wanna know about all the OTHER program names I had open at the time. And I don't just want to know they were called 'notepad.exe', 'winword.exe' - I want to know the actual files opened up at the time of the crash. In short, I want the information I can get if I photograph the tabs on my taskbar just before a crash. We're talking about already-saved notepad files, photographs etc. that are open on my screen just before a restart.)

Any tips on whether Windows has this information somewhere? Are there any logs that... Read more

A:Post-crash/reboot, how can I find out what files I had open before the crash?

Hi esinohm and welcome to TSF !

Several MRU (most recently used) lists are stored in the registry, but you won't find a single list with all the programs that were opened at a given time.

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/RegistryMRU.htm

This article discloses the location of the MRU lists for office documents :
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;826208

Latest opened and saved files will also appear in the recent document menu in the start menu. There's a setting that allows you to see recently opened documents in the start menu properties : right-click the start menu => properties => customize next to start menu => advanced.

Have you tried investigating the reasons of the crashes ? Could be a single hardware problem. I can usually leave my computer on for a whole week without any crashes.

What are your system specs ?

I have a network problem, and it may be a bit hard to explain my situation fully, but I'll try to cover the pertinent information. Basically, when I do anything network intensive, like a file transfer, the file transfer will work, but it will kill all other network activities. I can't browse the web or IM during this time as Firefox will say that it's timed out and IM will drop off and disconnect.

The network setup I'm using is hard to explain fully, but the basic core of it is a router with an access point linked via WDS. The router provides wifi through the house, and also connects to the AP with WDS (@ full 54g signal). The AP basically just gives me hardwired Ethernet ports for my equipment (which is in a location where it would be very difficult to hardwire). Both the router and AP are running the latest "tomato" aftermarket firmware FWIW.

Almost all of my transfers involve going from wired to wireless. I tested my transfer speed during several file transfers and got just a tad over ~3MB/s (~24mbit/s), which seems ok to me since it's going from wired to wireless g. If I do a transfer over ethernet to ethernet (no wireless), it does not seem to cause the problem.

Basically it seems like the router is not dividing up wireless bandwidth as it should. It seems to be only allowing the one transfer to use the wireless at any given time. Is there a setting that might help me? I was thinking maybe a QOS setting might help, ... Read more

I work at school that the network goes down 1 to two times a day. The 20 switches(cisco 2850) show that network has way to much traffic at all that time. All the ports are pretty much solid when this happens. It happens at random times thorughout the day we have about 1000 xp machines and 20 imacs. The only part that does not go down are the computers connected to the mdf which is a cisco 6506. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be overloading all the 2850 switches causing everyone not be able to get on the network or get to any of the servers.

I'm not real familiar with this feature, but I think that you've got to use the FAST wizard to restore the files to your system. Go to Start...All Programs...Accessories...System Tools...Files and Settings Transfer Wizard and launch the dialog.

I had an issue where my browse failed to communicate with the web after about 5 minutes, but Messenger continued to work and the network activity remined high. The windows firewall and security centre were being turned off.

It seems that these symptoms are quite common, and I followed a few threads, trying the fixes contained therein. Running various spyware, malware and virus checks, resetting the hosts file, turning off unwanted items in msconfig etc.

The situation now is that the security centre is stable, the browser is not cutting off, but the network activity remains high. I am afraid that my computer still contains some spyware/malware that has been undetected.
I've been online in this session for 20 minutes and the activity packets are: Sent 19,012 Received 32,507

I would like to know if this is normal, it seems high to me.

Ok guys I have plans to help make a new network for my family freind who is setting up a small hotel.
Basicly there are 4 floors. Each floor needs Wi-fi access, which needs to be connected from a single downstairs router.
Now how can we go about setting this up?
Obviously we need an access point on each floor, but we would also need access points to be connected to each access point on each floor. Now with WDS we could make the network look like this:

etc.
^
|
|
First floor access point (repeater)-->repeater
^
|
Router <-- Modem <--Internet

Would that work? Can you actually add a repeater to a repeater WIRELESSLEY? Or maybe each floor's main repeater will connect by wires to the main router downstairs....

Thank you for any help

Hi,

I have been trying to work the answer to my question out for ages. In our house, we have four computers. Our main computer is wired into our router with a wire, but everything else is wireless. Attached to my main computer is a 500gb external hard drive. I don't use it much, so most of the memory is still there.

Using windows, i have configured a workgroup. All of my computers are connected up to this. When my main computer is on, i can wirelessly print from my laptops. Any way, i have made a sharing folder that is on my external hard drive. I can access this from my other computers fine.

Now is the bit that i can not figure out. One of my computers is a netbook. It only has an 8gb hard drive though. Is what i would like to be able to do is when i make a file, for it to automatically make a copy in my sharing folder i have made. This way, i could open all of my files on my netbook without downloading them. I just can't work out how to make a copy of something automatically. If i just needed to start a piece of software at the end of the day, then that is fine. I just want to have files i create copied into my sharing folder. (Obviously i dont want to do each one by hand)

If i could have any help it would be appriciated.

A:Large Area Network

Is this a Windows Netbook?
Synctoy would work:

Netbooks are designed to take advantage of Cloud Computing. Consider using Google Docs or MS Sky Drive.

i've filled my hard drive on one laptop with television shows and i don't have a dvd burner on this computer so i would like to transfer them to my other laptop that does. i planned to do this with a 2gb flash drive, so i loaded about 1.9 gb of .avi video files (episodes of a television show) on to the flash drive and transferred them onto the other laptop. the problem then arised. i found that when i tried to open these video files on the new laptop (using windows media player which is what i used on the other computer to play them) they played as audio files with no video at all...i don't understand how or why this would happen please help if you can....i have a lot of files to transfer. i also was curious what would be a good free software i could download for the burning to dvd-r process, and should i shrink them also...i'm new to the dvd burning process as you can tell.

A:large file transfer from laptop to laptop both w/ xp

maybe you need to update the codex on the computer you are transferring the files to.

Hello

I have been suggested to keep my data in a separate drive than my operating system.

Actually, my hard drive is partitioned in two drives, c: and F:

I want to transfers my directory c:\user to f:\user. I did try to copy between them, but some files where not transferred

So what is the best way to do that. After, do I need to do special thing to make sure that all the references will be followed to the new files positions, IE when accessing them via my task manager

Hope I'm clear enough whit my soso English

Martin

A:Large Transfer of data between drive c: and drive f:

Hi Martin. I had the same problem with some of my movie files. I do not know the official answer. However, it is my experience that the size should not be greater than about 5Gb. If your files are smaller that that, you should not have problems.

Have you tried using SyncToy to the transfering?

I am downloading Office 2007 multi-language packs from Microsoft volume licensing. It has 3 large ISO files. 2 out of 3 are way larger than 4.7 gb. I need to install this on someone's pc. How do you recommend me doing this?

A:large ISO Files

Use a virtual drive like Daemon Tools.
