Slow NAS file copy - Win 7 vs XP

Q: Slow NAS file copy - Win 7 vs XP

I have data from an accounting program that I back up from 1 QNAP NAS to a Buffalo NAS every day. The files total 167MB.

If I use a Windows XP computer on the network (24 port Gigabit switch ) all computer have Gigabit, the copying will be finished in about 2 minutes.

If I use Windows XP mode on a Win 7 machine the same copy takes about the same time.

If I use Win 7, it will take about 2 - 3 mins to calculate the copy and then about 2 mins to do the copy.

Is there some way to make Win 7 behave the same way as Win XP and do the copying without the calculating.

If this topic has already been covered, can some kind soul please direct me to the correct thread.

I like Windows 7 in all respects, but it seems to be very slow in network file copying compared to XP or other previous versions of Windows.

A: Slow NAS file copy - Win 7 vs XP

I have this issue as well. My win7 machines take an extremely long time to copy files over the network compared to our XP machines. It seems that it takes almost as long to calculate the the copy as it does to actually perform the copy.

Few days ago, Suddenly My Windows XP started operating very slow. I uninstalled some program such as : AVG PC TUNEUP to reduce the load on the system. I also checked my Task Manager for pointing out memory eating processes but found none. My CPU Usage was dribbling around 0% to 3%. But PFUsage was near 788MB. Then I started searching for virus. Scanned with AVG, Avast, Zemana, Hitman PRO, Antimalwarebytes several times.
When they didn't solve the problem I gave a repair installation of my system to see what happens. It fixed the problem. But started again after some moment. I gave the repair installation once again and its running smoothly now.
I did some search over net and found out this problem can be connected to my harddrive. I scanned my Harddrive with HDDScan, Crystal Disk Info. They both showed error for

Hello
I am running windows 7 on an asus pc.
I think I got a virus at one point when I was trying to upgrade my itunes.
I downloaded malware bytes and avg in addition to my norton security.
I ran scans for a while to try to make sure I got it cleaned up.
The computer seems to work ok right now except if I try to copy photos from my c drive to a thumb drive, it is unbelievably slow. It will give me estimates like 24 hours for a block of photos. It will take forever to copy just the first one, so I abort the operation. Went and did it on my wife's computer (identical pc with same os), it operated fine.
I'm not sure if I had a virus that left this legacy behind or if I have two antivirus programs that are fighting. I did remove malware bytes and I think I removed avg.
Is it possible a virus did something to my pc that will make copying and pasting files very slow?

A:very very slow file copy

Your problem is you have AVG running With Nortons. You can not have two anti virus programs running it will cause system instability and also to run very slow. The reason for this is because you have two anti virus programs running in real time reading the same files. Like two dogs fighting over the same piece if meat.

Pick Nortons or AVG and stick with only one. Uninstall the other and also use the AVG or Nortons removal tool.

I've been researching this issue and have found 2 possible fixes:1) Disable Remote Differential Compression (Go to Start...Control Panel...Uninstall a Program...Turn Windows Features On or Off...and remove the check mark from Remote Differential Compression).2) A possible issue with network copying: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931770/You can get the hotfix from MS, or you can try this link (I haven't tried it myself):http://thehotfixshare.net/download/index.p...B931770-x86.msuWill post more once I see how this works for me.

A:Slow File Copy In Vista

Hey usama
I am not sure if this is the same prob I am experiencing... I recently tried to copy all of my home pics from my desktop to my new laptop. The older desktop is a dell inspirion 3000 (i think its a inspirion). any way I bought it in 04. Now I just got a new HP tx1120us laptop w/ Windows Vista installed.
I have since noticed 2 very aggrivating probs:
1. I tried to download the pictures I have to a CD then move them to the laptop. I know there a re other ways to do this - including Esy File transfer - but do not have the cable reqd - besides I figured that since it burned these files (@ 700mb worth -enought to fill a CDR) on my old desktop in @ 4 min - that it should really copy to my new laptop w/in @ 2 min due to the fact the laptop has increased memory / RAM (i think). Why then is it getting stuck and failing to copy these files it starts - gets about 3/4 of the way done and then just locks up - will do nothing more. I have tried multiple times with different CD's and even transfering diff info (in case one of the photos was corrupt- which I doubt since i took them all) . So again I am curious as to why this prob is happening.

2. Is the fact that since I have noticed this, I have also noticed that I have downloaded pics/ files to my docs folder (I am a professional photgrapher) and when I go back to view them - the folder that i placed them in is there - but the picture is not anymore. This prob (as with the other is about to force me t... Read more

I'm a new Vista user and I've been struggling with extremely slow file copies between my Vista 64 Home Premium SP1 system and my XP SP3 system. I've searched and searched and tried a number of suggestions in posts that I have found. None have worked.

I'm running a Wireless G (54mbps) network. My Internet access from both system is very fast (FiOS 20mbps download), so no issues there.

When I say extremely slow I'm talking less than 200 KBps. I get the same slow response using Explorer and Robocopy. I have disabled autotuning and RSS with these commands.

netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

I'm at a loss. I don't know what to do to solve this problem. If anyone out there can help I would greatly appreciate it.

try using a wire, wireless will never be as fast as wired connections, even using wired connections will be slow, about 3Gbps but its a lot faster than 200Kbps

Copy and paste operations over the network in Vista are terribly slow. The 'Calculating time remaining' blurb just seems to slow the entire process down and then I get transfer rates less than 2mb between machines on my network. Here are my relevant specs:

Belkin N1 Wireless Router set to A/G/N

Machine A: Vista Ultimate, P4 Duo Core, 2 GB Ram, Belkin N1 PCI desktop wireless card, 7200 RPM Sata HDD

Machine B: Vista Ultimate, AMD Athlon 3800+, 1 GB Ram, Marvell Yukon Gigabit Ethernet, 7200 RPM Sata HDD

The wireless Router has updated firmware supporting Vista, the N1 PCI desktop wireless card is still running on XP drivers but I get GREAT download speeds on the internet. Machine B has multiple HDD's and when I perform copy/paste from one drive to another, the transfer rate is very fast. I have read some tips that disabling 'Remote Differential Compression' has improved transfer speeds but that just increased my speed very slightly - hardly noticable at all. If not for the fact that I get great download speeds on the internet, I would assume that the XP driver on my N1 desktop card is at fault.

I setup Machine B as a FTP server and downloaded the same files that were so slow from Machine A and transfer rates are significantly faster than the copy/paste operation.

As more people get their hands on Vista, I'm sure someone smarter than I will find a cure to this annoying problem!

Hi

I've been trying to recover as much data from what I think is a failing HD, most of the data being images.

I've been using Windows Explorer (XP Home) to cut and paste file from the failing drive to the new drive, both on the same machine. The OS is already on the good HD. Both are SATA.

With the exception of dealing with a slew of bad files (failed cyclical redundancy check..or something like that), everthing was going well. BUt now the files are being transfer at a snails pace. They still transfer, but way too slow.

And when I check the system performance, no program seems to be running and I seem to have plenty of resources left. Once in awhile I get a spike on the CPU usage chart.

So do you think that this drive is beginning to go south or could it be something else?

I just did a clean XP Home install and don't have much loaded onto the new HD yet. Running Avast! virus and Spywareblaster...oh...and the XP SP2 upgrade with it's firewall. I have Auto Updates turned off as well as the help/services thing....(saw that here a bit ago)

Oh.....and I got a new Antec case/PS when I installed the new HD, just in case my old PS was dying as well.....whew!

Thanks in advance....

A:slow file transfers (copy/cut/move)

As it turns out, it appears that if I try to move, or copy, files from the damaged HD, the files are moved quickly untill a corrupted file is encountered. At that point, things slow to a crawl until I get the error message and can delete that file and start over again.

Just over the last days all of a sudden my PC has started having issues copying files from my HDD to a USB drive, or from an external HDD to PC HDD etc. Also when it opens a HDD that has video files on it it takes along time to open, with the green bar over the top slowly moving across the top. If I start to open files it will then say "not responding" and needs to be left alone to come right again. Infact I tried to burn a data DVD of some video files from an external HDD to the burner and that also slowed so badly it only burnt 10% of the data in 30 mins. If I then try to close the files or burner etc it freezes and sometime I have to turn the power off to get it to reboot.
I have a 64 bit Win 7 OS, an i7 2600 CPU, 16 Gig RAM.
It hasn't been a problem before but now is.
Have ran virus scan and seems ok.
Other small files are ok, surfing the net is ok, other programs are ok. Just file transfers, burning etc.
Any tips would be great, its doing my head in.
Thx

I just wanted to post this as an FYI. I thought users that read this forum may benefit. I won't include the gory details, the TCPDumps, SMB analysis, etc - but here's the synopsis.

Over VPN, WAN, or any link that increases latency between nodes above typical "LAN" speeds - CIFS/SMB file access for Windows systems can be typically slow.

This is a constant support question. "Why can I achieve 70Mbps when I copy the file locally, but across my [insert super fast connection across the planet] I'm only seeing 3-5Mbps"

Answer: TCP windowing, and SMB block size negotiation. Microsoft has published it's myriad of Windows releases to achieve decent performance across the lowest common denomination of users. Therefore tuning is required whenever latent connections are introduced.

Case study:
Customer with GigEthernet LAN and Layer3 metro switched access. Everything inside the Metro area was 1-3ms MTTR. File copies/general SMB access was great. Typically any one user could open a file upwards of 60-70MBps.
Customer introduced some national offices. Serial DS3's, and POS OC-3's were installed across Cisco 7200 and 3800 series routers.
Customer immediately started complaining about file access across WAN. Even if WAN was unutilized (less than 1Mbps of traffic), file copies would never exceed 5-6Mbps.
Solution: RTFM

Hey guys/gals, newbie here.

Ok I am not the most computer literate guy, but I know alittle, definitely more than any of my friends though, thats why I have come here

So, I have been burning dvd's for some time now with no problems. I got a 500 gig ext hd and formatted it NTFS to store multiple 4+gb files. So file transfer back and forth to ext hd (F:) and internals (C:) and (D:) was going just fine. So was burning. Then...

I backed up all files on F: and I reformatted C: and D: because my rather old pc was bogging down. In the meantime I switched C: and D: from master to slave and reinstalled winxp on the now new C: drive. So my OS is now running on an 80 gig Hd instead of a 20 gig hd.

Since then any cut/copy/paste or drag/drop of these 4.6 gig .iso files from F: to C: or any combination of the drives, be it internal to internal, ext to int or int to ext, my PC Usage spikes to 100% and the time remaining says 45 or so minutes. That is not right, as you know. Before I could copy a 4 gig file from F: to C: (or D:) in about 10 minutes, maybe a little less and then burn the 4.6 gig image in about 10 minutes, maybe a little more or less. Now its 45 min to an hour just to get from F: to int HD. Plus the transistion isn't smooth, so the .iso file is all choppy and won't even burn properly. What I mean by not smooth is PC usage spikes to 100% then retracts to about 20% (only for split sec) then spikes back to 100%.

Just a few minutes ago took the ext HD to ... Read more

Whenever I try to do a completely normal (explorer) copy of large files between two ordinary internal disk partitions, explorer reports (and takes) 90% of infinity to do it! It starts out telling me it'll take 20 mins, then 40, then 60, then 240, and on and on. Obviously, I usually cancel them, since I don't have weeks or months to copy a single file!

We're talking about a 4 GB or so file or folder, so it really shouldn't be a big deal. I am NOT copying from a CD/DVD or to/from a network; these are ordinary files on ordinary disks.

I have gobs of memory available (1GB installed, very little in use at the time). My disks are quite fast (10,000 RPM SATAs). My CPU is quite fast (3.2 GHz, hyper-threaded Intel P4). Every other copy of smaller files completes very quickly. I have only an ordinary anti-virus util running, and I've tried completely disabling it and it made no difference.

I'm currently in the process of copying files back from the cloud in the exact same location where I had them before and now it says that the file name is too long and prompts to see whether I want to skip the file or not. The error message given does not
give the full file name or the path so it is impossible to see which files were copied successfully or not. This never happened with XP! Then afterwards I found that some of the files with long names did copy successfully whereas others didn't. I find this
to be a very user unfriendly process and I'm totally confused! These are critical files and I'm sure I haven't exceeded 260 characters or whatever. This is soOoO frustrating!!

A:file copy error message not sufficient + file name too long will not copy

Hi ,

There is a limit of filename length within Windows Explorer. In the Windows API (with some exceptions discussed in the following paragraphs), the maximum length for a path is MAX_PATH, which
is defined as 260 characters.
The shell and the file system have different requirements. It is possible to create a path with the Windows API that the shell user interface is not able to interpret properly.
This means that your long filename can only be handled at the command prompt level and you cannot drag and drop an illegal length filename within Windows Explorer.

Please simplify your folders and titles.

More information, please check the part of Maximum Path Length Limitation in the link below.

My computer contracted wmupdate virus the other day and wiped my computer. I system restored and had to run a couple disk checks and eventually managed to get the majority of my files back in order (albeit as hidden folders, which i manually changed back).

However, a few of my programs now won't run properly; for instance when i try to open Google Sketchup it loads but then immediately exits the program. Also, Photoshop throws up a runtime error:
An unexpected and unrecoverable problem has occurred. Photoshop will now exit.

Runtime Error!

Program: C:\Pro...

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.

I have uninstalled both programs and reinstalled and the errors still occur.

I figure the best thing to do would be to backup my files and reinstall Windows. I dont have enough room on my external hard drive for a complete backup, so i have been trying to copy files from it onto another external hard drive, but when i try to move my files over the copy speed slows down to around 50kb/sec and seemingly freezes.

So i have a dilemma. I can't copy my files, so i can't backup my computer in order to wipe it in order to try and fix it.

Being an architect it just so happens that the two programs i predominantly use are the ones that get shafted! Any advice that could be given to solve my problem would be greatly greatly appreciated.

My understanding from the article is that this backup file (software.bak) will later be used to restore correct settings for various software applications. Since I can't copy it, it appears that I am screwed, no? Or is there a way out somehow?

Thanks to anyone who's been there and can help...

BTW I have the XP installation disk that came with, and a diagnostics disk which I have not yet run.

A:Blue Screen: Registry File Failure; can't copy corrupted file to tmp directory

Never mind, I had it wrong--didn't read the document referred to above carefully enough. The procedure worked like a charm, and the document is very easy to read and entertaining to boot! (pun intended).

The document describes a procedure that closely follows a Microsoft KB document (which I now can't find) but does not contain any warning regarding whether the OS is an OEM (original equipment manufacture) install or not. The Microsoft doc says not to use the procedure on an OEM-installed OS, but I just did it on my Dell, so that warning seems to be incorrect.

Many many thanks for the help provided by this document and this site.

I cannot copy or paste jpeg files from my computer to my SD 2GB cards. Also, I get this msg when I try to print jpeg files. Using Adobe Elements I am able to archive these files. Oddly enough I can attach and send these jpeg files via email. Prior to August '08 was able to do these tasks without a problem. I suspect that there is a software compatibility problem since this problem came on suddenly (maybe iTunes?). No problems importing jpeg files from SD cards. I've looked at several sites on the internet but none seem to have the right solution for my problem. THANKS for any help that you can provide! -Stu

A:Error copying file or folder; cannot copy img the directory or file cannot be created

This has caught me more than once.

The problem is a limitation on the number of files and folders allowed in the root folder of a FAT16 file system (as for a memory card) of 512. (Note, this number is reduced much further if longer file names than 8 characters are used, as most people will want to).

When transferring the files onto the card, new files will be rejected when you hit this limit.

So keep your files in separate folders, so they are not all in the root folder.

For files and folders in root it might be worth keeping your filenames under 8 characters in length so you can use the full 512 files on root folder.

Hi,
I would like to create a .bat to copy files from source folder to destination folder.
Some files in source folder already exist in destination folder (Same name)
What I would like is that files existing in destination folder to be rename to f.eks filename_BAK.extension.
Eksampel.:
Source folder include. FileOne.asp - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt
Destination folder include. FileOne.asp - (NO FileTwo) - FileTree.txt
Result. FileOne.asp (version from source)(Existing renamed to FileOne_BAK.asp) - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt (version from source)(Existing renamed to FileTree_BAK.txt)
Now in desination folder.: FileOne.asp - FileOne_BAK.asp - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt - FileTree_BAK.txt
Files in source folder are placed in different folders, but in same structure in destination.

Kind regards

Hi Guys,

I want to make one batch file which daily copies yesterday's files from one folder & paste it to another folder.

I.e.
C:/111 folder has following files.
1.zip had yesterday's date
2.zip had yesterday's date
3.zip had last sunday's date

now, when i will run batch file today, it only copies 1.zip & 2.zip & move to another folder C:/222

So C:/222 contains following
1.zip had yesterday's date
2.zip had yesterday's date

Please note , i have to run this batch file daily which should not require any changes.

When I use the XCopy command in Windows 2000, I can copy any file I like; however, when I use copy-and-paste or drag-and-drop in either Windows Explorer or PowerDesk, I get the following error:

Cannot Copy File: Cannot Read from the Source File or Disk

I searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base and came up with only one article, Q224378. This article seems not to apply to my situation because it applies to Windows 2000 Server. I am running Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 2. I did attempt to install the fix that article Q224378 suggested anyway; but, I got an error message that I was attempting to upgrade a program that didn't exist on my system.

I have also learned that this error applies when copying from either of my SCSI CD-ROM drives, not when copying from hard disks or floppies.

Any Suggestions?

Hi All
I have a rather large file system with lots of folders & subfolders. When I want to save previously on Xp operating system I'd search in explorer open the folder I want then copy the address (e.g c:\customer records\client name\job address).
In windows 7, when I copy the folder address i get this "search-ms:displayname=Search%20Results%20in%20electronic%20files&crumb=location:S%3A%5CSEQ%5C011_Estimating %5Celectronic%20files\CHERMSIDE , 17 smith ST"

As you can imagine I cant paste that into a save as field and expect it find the folder location.

Does someone know if it can do what I want? keeping in mind this is about time saving and productivity exercise so I need a simple solution. It is also on a work computer so a lot of settings are locked.

Appreciate any help

I have Windows XP-Pro SP2 installed on a P4 1.8GHz CPU with 768MB RAM

I would like a script that opens a commamd window and calls for a file (icon file) to be copied to a specific folder on 5 different drives. I would like to be able to either paste in the file path or drag and drop the file onto the command window. The icon file will always come from the same folder "C:\WINDOWS\system32\00 ICONS\System Folders" and be copied, sometimes replacing a file with the same name, to these 5 folders:

"W:\WINDOWS\system32\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"X:\0 aAPPS\00 a Install First\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"W:\WINDOWS\system32\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"N:\0 aAPPS\00 a Install First\00 ICONS\System Folders"

"D:\0 aAPPS\00 a Install First\00 ICONS\System Folders"

I apologize if I am using incorrect terms. I don't know if a batch file could do this or if it would have to be done with vbs. I would appreciate the help. I know nothing about writng vbs script and only a little about writing batch files.

I have the game 'Crysis' on two backup DVD's. I had to put the installation files in a .rar and split them so I could back it up (I downloaded the game digitally from EA)

So when I insert disk 1 and try to copy 'Crysis.part1.rar' to D:/Crysis (D: is my data drive, C: is strictly the OS and maybe 2 or 3 applications installed on it) it copies most of it, but when it gets to '5 seconds remaining' it comes up with this error. It takes like 6 minutes to copy it and then it errors out when it's almost done! I've tried 3 times and the error popped up every time. The disk is spotless... I mean it looks brand new. Not even a speck of dust or any smudges at all.

Why am I getting this error?? I don't know what to do! If I can't copy it I'll have to redownload the entire 6gb installation package from EA, which will take probably 4-5 hours.

Please help!

I'm currently using Richcopy to move about 4TB worth of data from our colo facility (1000 miles away) to our office. And that data also gets routed overseas first before coming back (don't ask). Needless to say, connectivity while not bad, could be better.

The small files are zooming right along, the issue is the larger files (the ones that are hundreds of MB or even several GB).

From time to time, I briefly lose network connectivity for a second or two, when that happens, the files currently being copied abort and once connectivity is restored, Richcopy just moves on to the next files. So when Richcopy advertises that it 'resumes', it seems it is talking about resuming a file copy queue, and not resuming partially copied files. Those have to start over from the beginning.

Is there a tool similar to Richcopy with the functionality I'm looking for?

Thanks!

Structure:
• I have a network directory that stores photos of individuals in jpg format. There may be only 2 pics of each person, or there may be 7 pics.
• Each persons pics are stored in a randomly named directory / subdirectory. dont have any control over the original program, it's just the way it was written, does not seem to follow any logical pattern, possibly a HEX naming structure based off the date & time, who knows (I will include a sample directory tree at the end of the post).
• Included within each of these created directories, along with the pictures, is a standard text file (filename "B.TXT") which includes the date the picture was taken, the persons name, and other information.
• Each time a person comes in and their picture is taken, the program: (i) creates the random directory (ii) stores the pics (iii) creates the "B.TXT" file with the persons information (iv) generates several other program specific files that I have no need for.
• The program names each of the pictures with the exact same names, which is why they are stored in different directories, so they will not overwrite. The retention period on each individuals directory, pics and files is approximately 40 days.

The only thing I can think of is permissions. Are you trying to do this from an admin account and do you have any security software that might be blocking system folders from access?

Also, can you copy it off the floppy somewhere else first like your documents, and then try moving it to System32?

Hello,

I recently bought a Lexar 4 GB jump drive intending to use it as a backup for a documents folder with 3 GB of data.

When I try to copy the folder, the copying starts but a second or two later I get a message "Error Copying File or Folder---Cannot Copy File".

A Lexar technician went through various operations and tests (including reformatting) with me and his conclusion is that one or more of the files is/are corrupted. (We tried to copy the folder to my C drive and got the same error message.)

There are a lot of sub-folders and I suppose I could go through one by one and find which ones won't copy but is there a simpler way of locating the file(s) that are corrupted and correcting them?

Thanks so much!

A:Cannot copy file

Well, I don't know about a "much simpler way", but you don't have to go thru one by one. Basically, you can select half of the folders >copy and paste > if it goes thru fine, then it's not in that half.

So you're left with the "other" half, just select half of that...well, you get the picture.

That's basically what I did when I was trying to locate a corrupted video file. It didn't take too long.

Right click on the image and do a "save as" to your hard disk. You can import that image into Word.

FWIW, I just right clicked on a graphic on a web page and selected "copy" from the drop-down menu, I was able to paste that image into a Word 2007 document.

A CRC problem means that either the original file was corrupt or the archived one is corrupt. You should always check the backup logs after you complete your backup. I think you might be out of luck.

I have a backup script I created using Robocopy to always keep a fresh backup of some of my most important data but just noticed one of my files fails to be copied to my backup disk.

The file in question is a executable file called LTL.exe and is a small utility that is part of a scenery add-on product for Microsoft Flight Simulator X.

I've also tried copy this file manually in Explorer by right-clicking the file and then choosing Copy-Paste and although I don't get any error message doing this and the copy process seems to be successful the file never ends up at the destination.

I'm running Win 7 x64 Ultimate and I have UAC disabled (not that it should be important since I'm not trying to copy the file into a system folder) and I'm local administrator on my PC. I've also tried taking ownership of this specific file and double and triple-checking I have full control for this specific file looking at the security tab.

If I launch the file in it's original location the utility starts up just fine so the file doesn't seem to be corrupt.

I've also scanned both this file and my complete PC for viruses both using Avast! and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and all is good...not a trace of any viruses.

Many thanks in advance for what could cause this, never seen this before!!

My thought was copy protection. Try via command prompt. But I bet it doesn't go.

Edit: the way to back it up for disaster avoidance is to make an image of the disk partition. Macrium Reflect Free is good. There are other free imaging programs. Look on http://www.thefreecountry.com/

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this site, I have a problem and I hope you guys can help me out.

I usually backup my weeks work on Friday afternoons. What I do is run a "search" for all files created or modified within the last 7 days and then "copy" all relevant files to a folder on an external hard drive, and then burn a CD.

Everynow and then, I get the following message. "Cannot Copy File: Cannot Read From the Source File or Disk"

Do you guys know why this happens? There are no problems with me copying and dragging files individually over to the new folder, but the problem arises when i copy a bunch over.

Last night, I ended dragging my entire work folder (21GBs) onto the external hard drive. It took a few hours, but it worked.

This morning, I was able to run a search for all documents and files that were created or modified over the past week. But when I tried to copy only those files to a separate folder I again ran into this error message.

Does anybody out there know what's going on? Or better yet, does anyone out there have a better way of backing your week's work?

Thanks
Thomas Lee

A:Cannot Copy File

Microsoft Word (for example) locks current temporary files (in your C:\Documents & Settings\{your username}\Local Settings\Temp file and may not allow you to copy them.

When "Copy", "Move", or "Delete" runs across these files, it quits the operation.

Other programs may have "locked files" in other locations.

If you are on XP and if you want a simple backup, use Windows' NTBACKUP. Just go to your START menu, choose RUN and type in NTBACKUP. Be sure to look at the "options" settings.

It provides for full backups; differential backups (all files changed since last full backup); incremental backups(all files changed since your last incremental backup) and for copy (just a copy - doesn't set archive bits.

I'm sure others will reply with comments of their favorite backup programs.

I have a licensed copy of XP running in XP Mode on a Win 7 Pro machine. I have seen instructions on the net for getting Hyper V up and running where I can create a new XP Mode VHD file, but, I would like to copy my own file from my Win 7 Pro machine (because it contains the key XP software that I want to keep running for another year or two).

Replacing that old software should probably be Plan "A" but it's only Plan "B" at this point (or possibly Plan "C").

hello,
i think my windows and hdd are going to crash soon. i want to back up my files. but i could not. i could not copy the files as they are taking a awful lot of time. and sometimes it just stops copying and my pc freezes. what can i do?
I am using windows 7.

A:cannot copy file

Go here to download Ubuntu 10.04 ( There is a newer version, but I am going by my existing setup, so follow along and choose 10.04 ) http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/10.04/ Save the iso file.

Then download ImgBurn from here: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

Install ImgBurn and run it.

Choose "Write Image to Disc"

At the top of the Imgburn window, where it says "Source" click on the folder with maginfying glass icon; Then navigate to where you saved the ISO file.

Then click on the bottom area of the window depicting hd write to CD.

That should create the CD.

Now you want to boot with the CD on your PC. Check your BIOS so that it chooses to boot using the CD first. You are looking for the Boot menu, boot priority, or something along that line.

Once you boot into Ubuntu, pull down the Places pull down menu. Choose the ## GB Filesystem. That would be your hard drive. You will be able to see all folders in your drive. Now copy off the files you want to a USB memory stick.

Here is my problem

My previous OS was Win 98. My HD was 80 Gb partitioned in to the following C: 20Gb, D: E: F: G: H: I: 10Gb each.

I formatted C: in NTFS and clean installed XP pro.
All the other partitions are FAT32.

I am trying to copy a 4Mb .exe file from a CD-r onto one of the partitions, but I keep getting an error message

"Cannot copy file invalid MS-DOS function"

In explorer if I right click -> properties on any folder the folder attributes are set to Read Only. I set the attribute to Archive or remove the Read Only but this doesn't to work. The attribute is always reset to Read Only.

I log on as administrator but makes no difference.

I am new to Xp but this is doing my head in.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello all , i am new to batch programming.

I wish to have a batch file to read .apk file from folder and then copy it to another folder. Then it should rename the copied apk file to test.apk

eg:
i have a file in folder e:\apps\angrybirds.apk , I want to copy this angrybirds.apk to d:\apps and rename it to test.apk

Here the file names in the e:\apps\ will be changing. So what ever may be the name , it should read the name of the file from e:\apps\ folder , copy it to d:\apps\ and rename it to "test.apk" . Test.apk is a fixed rename

I see this complaint all over the internet and no answers other than for users to look at drives and use Tera Copy, disable windows firewall, virus protection, adjust some settings like encryption, fetch off, etc., get drivers, hot fixes. I have done all those like other people suffering problem and like others did no good.

I have 2 internal 1 TB SATA III drives and for all practical purposes cannot copy large files between them at most times. Windows 7 professional with all updates (I presume, have auto-update on). I can copy a 700MB file from an XP machine to either of the Win 7 drives in 15 -20 seconds and if I try to copy the same file from Win 7 machine either way between the drives it estimates 30 min - a day or more and goes from 1/mb per second down to bytes/sec. If I go to XP machine and from attched folders there move a file from one of the Win 7 drives to the other Win 7 drive, the move is again < 30 seconds.

Task manager shows virtually no cpu activity during the copy done on Win 7 machine. Note, from Win 7 machine, if I copy from attached folder from xp machine to local folder, speed is fine for main drive (c) but slow on secondary drive.

What possible driver or hardware problem could cause snail pace from Win 7 machine drive to drive, but normal (100MB+/sec speed) when copying drive to drive from XP machine over local net?

To complicate things: this morning, after 3 or 4 days working on this problem, computer woke up and speed normal for all ... Read more

Hi

I've been running Vista on my desk top machine for several months now without too many problems. The thing I have just noticed though is that it is EXTREMELY slow to copy from one directory to another.

I have been trying to copy about 3GB of data to my DVD/R to burn it but at the transfer rate it is going at it will take something like 12 hours to copy across before being able to burn.

Since installing Vista I haven't installed any burning software. I've just used the in-built burning utilities and they've been OK, although I've only used them once or twice. This is the first time I've tried to use it with any large file sizes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

It copy and then stops then it will continue again and stop repeatedly until the copy ends. When it starts copying, it starts at 10MB/sec then gradually drops to 3MB/sec. This speed rate gradual reduction happens to only flash drives and micro chips but as for the occasional stopping ithappens even if I'm copying between internal drives but for the internal drives the speed is between 25MB/sec to 51MB/sec. The problem is that it wasn't copying like that before I purchase the 2GB ram. Please any help.

Hi

If I use copy and paste to copy files, does XP automatically verify that the file copied exactly matches? I have googled this to death and the information is not consistent.

There was a website I found that said:

"To check that files are saved to disk correctly; the system can re-read the disk when saving and verify (compare) with the data in memory.

Syntax
VERIFY [ON | OFF]By default the CMD shell has verify OFF
Windows Explorer will always copy with verify ON"

That means that it always verifies the copy? And that I do not have to get third party software to do this?

Thanks!

what you can do is copy the file you want to share into an already shared folder. If you prefer an option free of windows 7 then dropbox.com is a wonderful fileshareing option. just have you and the person you are trying to share with create an account and upload the file.

Hello everyone here on this lovely forum

I have some questions I really hope you can help me with.

Create (save as) an file (A = 10.10.2015)
Makes changes (save) to the file (B = 20.10.2015)
Copy the file from 20.10.2015 to another harddrive (C = 30.10.2015)

What happens to the original file (A) when I make changes to it and ?save? the changes (B)? Will the original file from 10.10.2015 be deleted or is it saved somewhere else on the computer?

Is there any connection between the file first made 10.10.2015, and the new file that is created with ?copy? (30.10.2015)? There is only a connection between B (20.10.2015) - C (30.10.2015)?

Is there any info on the copied file to the hardrive, about the first file (10.10.2015)? No data, not even a the date (the date is 10.10.2015)?

Should I perceive it this way: When you ?copy? a file to a new hardrive, the copied file ONLY contain the changes last made and the date it was last changed, and there is no connection to the original version when the file was CREATED?

Best regards

A:What happens to a file when you 'save' and 'copy'?

When you save a file. The original is changed and cannot be found again.
When you save as, you have two files the original and the copy.

Hello ThunderRoad, and welcome to Eight Forums.

See if this may help for the computer you are copying to.

Add the Public folder to each library. For example, the "C:\Users\Public\Public Videos" to the Videos library.Make the added public Videos folder the default public save location for the Videos library.

Library - Add a Folder to in Windows 8

Library - Set Default & Public Save Locations in Windows 8

Afterwards, see if you are able to copy the folder over.

So I created a backup of a friend's laptop on my external hard drive because she didn't own one yet.
Now she's bought one and I'm trying to copy the backup file to it.

When I drag the file to copy I get a message saying I will need admin permissions to copy, but when I just click continue it appears to work (I set myself as the admin).

However, then a prompt comes up that says "Copying 1 item (0 bytes)" and the task bar just keeps flashing green across it. If I right click the file in my first HD and go to properties it says that the file is 0 bytes...
Did I not backup the laptop correctly? Or is this normal? Or is there an issue copying the file? I've tried going directly from HD to HD or from my HD to my desktop, and have the same results.

Why don`t she just create a backup from her pc ?

What would be different from the older backup you have ?

I am trying to copy files from a source directory to an output directory when the output directory already has a file with the following:

I already have the following:
findstr /s /i /m "\<../reusable_components\>" *.xml > results.txt
This will return a list of filenames with the text in it.

Now I want to parse the list of files and take out the filename after ../reusable_components. I tried:
for /f %%a in ('findstr /s /i /m "\<../reusable_components\>" *.xml') do (echo %%a)
but that didn't work any ideas?

Experiencing very poor performance copying files from DOS client to Win2K server. File copies to NT and XP take about 10 minutes, but the same copy can take up to 4 hours on Win2K. MS Knowledge Base Article Q244826 discusses the issue and suggests a registry change/entry for TcpWindowSize, but this has not solved the problem. Any other Win2K Server tweaks I can make to improve performance. The issue seems to revolve around packet size negotion between the client and server, and a sniffer has confirmed this.

A:MS-DOS to Win2K file copy

You never posted any of your network specs as far as hardware. (NIC's, hubs, switches...stuff like that). Some of that info might also shed some light on the situation. Packet size and negotioation however are on the software layer and would seem to be a driver issue.

Hi,

I have this problem on Vista 64 edition. We have a html file ( index.html ) that is under the root of our IIS web server.

When I edit this index.html file ( in Notepad++ ) I make changes to the file, save and everything looks fine. But when I browse to http://localhost/index.html I'm not seeing the changes that I have made in the file.

So I check the file again, its as I saved it, with my changes correctly. So I made a copy of it ( copy + paste simple ) then I open the copied file ( Copy of index.html ) and it DOESN'T have my changes.

I originally thought it must be a problem with IIS caching the page, but after coping and pasting in the file system and then having 2 files, that have different contents I now think that it must be either an OS error, or a problem maybe with Notepad++.

Does anyone have any ideas? Or experienced this problem before?

A:File copy problem!?

No one has any ideas on this problem. It's very annoying as it basically means I can't edit my file.

Thanks.

Hello,

I want to have some redundancy for our backup. At the moment our Windows Server 2003 system is being backupped by NT backup, it stores the backup on a different computer (through a UNC pad).

The system the backup is being stored on, is a Windows XP Pro (SP3) Machine.

Problem is I want to copy the newest BKF file to a external harddisk on a daily basis. I have found a script for this:
Code:
@echo off
setLocal EnableDelayedExpansion

pushd "E:\TGI-Backup\Backup Files"

for /f "tokens=* delims= " %%a in ('dir/b/od') do (
set newest=%%a
)
copy !newest! J:\Test
tested the script with a startfolder C:\Start and a Finish folder of C:\Finish and put several txt files in there. When I run this script the newest txt file was copied from c:\start to c:\finish.

Problem is the line: "E:\TGI-Backup\Backup Files" is not recognized. This has to do with the Space in the folder "Backup Files". Adding or removing the " characters around a pad does not work as well.

The server is configured to store the backup in \\JESUS\TGI-Backup (local foldername E:\TGI-Backup). But is automaticly adds the folder "Backup Files" and stores the BKF files in there
-Is there any way to get the pushd command to recognize folder/file names with spaces?

or

-can I let NT backup store the backup in a folder without the subfolder "Backup Files"?

Tnx in advance,
Wouter

If you want a command line app to direct it's output to a text file, use the > character. For instance, to capture the output of the DIR command:
