shared folder and changing their paths

Q: shared folder and changing their paths

On my desktop-computer i have shared some folders with my home network. Then i changed their paths, as i reorganized myself. Now it seems, when I acces the network, those folders paths dont seem to be updated, as i cant access them.

I can now of course "unshare", rename and share them again, which makes them again accessible through the network, but the old "folder names" still remain. why is that, how can i correct it?

Same problem with some old "synched folders".

A: shared folder and changing their paths

Curious, where do the old 'folder names' remain? Just in the drop down menu under 'Map network drive ...'?

If so those paths are saved in your registry.

Hey Guys,

I've got a problem getting offline folder permissions to stick after restarts in our domain. Here's what I do:

Go to MMC>shared folders>shares>C$ (as an example)>properties>offline settings> and then I change "only files and folders users specify..." to "All files...". Apply and done.

It works like a champ for what I'm trying to do (enable Restore Previous Versions of files to actually work- I learned that RPV fix from another thread here at seven), but after each restart the settings are restored to default. I'm assuming there's a group policy I can implement that'll auto-set those permissions permanently but I can't find any 'offline' shared folder permissions options anywhere. Thanks for any help.

A:GP for permanently changing shared folder offline permissions?

Sorry, forgot to mention the environment. We're running 100% Windows 7 workstations and an SBS 2011 server.

The whole point of my question is to ultimately enable a WORKING 'restore previous versions' feature for each workstation across the domain. As far as I can see, after much testing, with the setting I'm trying to permanently enable turned on, restore points actually do back up files for RPV... and with it off, RPV is totally useless on every workstation.

Hello! I recently upgraded my computer with an SSD for boot and main programs and use my 1TB HDD for general programs and media storage. The thing is I want it to by default install to my D:\ drive.

Now the only solution I see is editing the registry ProgramFilesDir - Which has some serious flaws. It will attempt to launch every program off of the D:\ drive even when it is stored on C:\ and about 9 out of 10 times, it still default installs to C:\.

Does anyone have a fix for this?

hi

i have changed the domain of the computer (from say old.net to new.net).
there is a folder shared on another machine on old.net domain. the user X was able to access it. aftter changing his domain from old.net to new.net he no longer can access that shared folder.
User X has working credentials for both domains.

on accessing it it asks for credentials. upon entering his correct user name in the format (old.net\X) he is not able to access it.

i had exactly same setup with another user Y and he was able to access data .

is there anything that i am missing ?

also accessing that folder first time asked for credentials but now it doesnt asks .. why ? there is nothign in credentials manager.

I changed the user name from "user001" to "user888". That changed the name on the login/logout screens. But the user folders and paths all stayed with the old name "user001". As a result some things, like the name installed programs will grab and use, are still called "user001".

Is there a way, short of re-installing Windows, to change all the appropriate folders, paths and registry entries to read "user888" and get rid of the old user name completely?

A:Changing the User Folders (and paths)

You may want to create a new account and move the user files over to that new account. Then delete the old account.

I have a program that plays music on VB 2008 Express Edition. It accesses music from my memory stick because I'm going to need to move the program to another computer. However, the memory stick was always listed under the J:\ drive, but now randomly it's listed under the K:/ drive. Is there a way so that I can just get the music "into" the program so that it can just play the music no matter what computer it is on. P.S. I also need to get this program to run on XP, and the file path is E:\, I'm afraid that since mine changed randomly, the XP computer I'm moving it to will also change randomly.

Please Help!

A:File Paths Changing Randomly

You can change the drive letter by going to Administrative Tools in Control Panel and them going into Computer Management, there is a section called Disk Management which will show all connected drives, from there you can change the drive path.

Hi friends!

I'm experiencing a very strange bug with a custom library. On the odd occasion when I open an explorer pane and navigate to my library on the left-hand side, two of my included folders - which are both located in 'C:\Program Files\...' will change to a non-existent 'C:\Program Files (x86)\...' version of the same folder. If I click on that folder in the library pane it will tell me the folder doesn't exist.

It happens infrequently but often enough to be annoying. It's not immediately clear what causes it or why it stops. When it happened just now I closed all open explorer panes and opened a new one, and the library displayed the correct 'non x86' folder structure.

Any idea what causes this and how it can be avoided?

Thanks!

When I first installed Win 7 I simply went with the default user name of "Owner". I wouldn't mind changing it now but I'm concerned about the effect on my shortcuts and so on.

If I rename it, will Windows go through and automatically update all the shortcuts and program paths and so on? My gut reaction is "Of course it will" but I've learned to be cautious with Windows! Will I end up with a lot of tidying up to do?

A:Will changing username mess up paths?

Only the username will be changed. The c:\users\<username> path does not get changed and this can lead to more confusion.

Better method:

1) Create two new accounts. One in the username you want, and one temporary...you can even call it TEMP if you like.

2) Log in as TEMP. Use Windows Easy Transfer to migrate all files and settings from your old account to the new one you just created.

3) When this is complete, log in as your new user and make sure everything is there and working.

4) Delete your old user and TEMP.

There is an Excel App on our network that gets used by multiple users. In this app there are some VLookups that pull information from other spreadsheets. The problem we are having is that the physical paths in the VLookups are being changed to relative paths. Instead of using L:\Files\somefile.xls it changes to \\server\share\somefile.xls.

When this happens the VLookup stops working, it's odd because both paths are legetimate but only the one with the physical path works. This is happening on several different spreadsheets and the formulas have to continualy remapped.

All users are using Office 97 but the OS are mixed, Win ME, 2000 and 98. Any ideas?

Here are the Vlookups:

Before
=VLOOKUP($C18,'L:\shared files\[EmpDataLog.xls]RATE'!$B$10:$AZ$642,5)

After

By default, programs install to the same drive that the currently running OS is installed on. What I'm trying to do, is to tell it to install programs to another drive/partition.

This way, if I needed to reformat and reinstall the OS, the bulk of my programs will remain intact.

I've read other forums and they've given skeptical answers to indicate that it can't be done, but I figured I'd pose the question here myself.

A:Automatically changing program install paths

Yea, mostly games are what I had in mind.

I always move the My Documents folder to a completely different physical drive upon each OS installation (I've been reformatting a lot lately due to instablity with recent hardware upgrades).

I've gotten into the habit of keeping multiple, up-to-date copies of select Application Data--most importantly, Firefox browser data. Switching between a laptop and desktop regularly, I also am able to perodically sync the two systems with the same bookmarks, cookies, saved passwords, and the like.

I've heard there's a way to do it remotely with FireFox so you can import them from anywhere, but for this particular purpose I'm more comfortable keeping the information in my grasp.

Hiyas

Here's my story. I've just managed to change a systems boot letter from E:\ to C:\. The machine is working fine now, but all the programs that were installed are still looking in E:\ which no longer exsists. I've gone through and changed a few of these paths manually, but after an hour of that i realised it'll take far too long to do it this way.

What i'm looking for is a tool to look through the registry and replace all instances of "E:\" with "C:\". Does anyone know if such a product is available? It's be a great help.

Thanks in advance

I'm having an issue with Windows Media Player for Windows 7.

I imported a bunch of playlists and their associated music files from an XP machine to my new Win7 machine, and some of the music files aren't playing - Media Player simply says that there was "an error" with no further explanation given, but this error only occurs with files with a certain file path.

On my XP machine a large chunk of my music files were located in C:\Documents and Settings\[my name]\My Documents\My Music\[artist name]\[song title] as .wma files. I know that in Win7 the Documents and Settings subdirectory was replaced by Users or something - that's not the real problem, because for all my other music files, the file paths as shown in my WMP playlists will adjust themselves automatically and play the music files correctly no matter where the files are moved. My issue stems from the fact that WMP is not correcting the file paths for the files located in Documents and Settings the way it is for all the other files. There is no way to edit the file paths in WMP, or I would have tried that.

This is not the first time I've moved my XP playlists to a Win7 machine, but on my previous attempts I have had no problem simply copying all my music to one folder and playing them in WMP. So I'm not sure why it's not working this time.

I would prefer to avoid rebuilding all my playlists by hand - I really don't think that should be necessary, since as I said I've moved all my data from an XP to a W... Read more

Hi, new to these forums so I really hope I'm posting this up in the right subforum.

Long story: My old hard drive was dying, and after installing a new one I used this "EaseUS" program to clone the old HDD's data onto the new one. This worked fine except for the fact that all of my shortcuts stopped functioning because the letter assigned to the new HDD was different from the old HDD.

Is there any easy, automatic way of making all shortcuts point to the new file path? Or do I have to manually change the hard drive letter in each shortcut's properties?

When I try to rename a folder on the D: partition that used to be a Windows XP recovery partition that has some Pokemon commissions in it, I get this message.
"This folder is shared with other people
If you rename this folder, it will no longer be shared."

But the folder is not shared nor has it ever been.

What is going on? Why does Windows 7 think that it is shared?

A:“This folder is shared with other people” when renaming not shared folder

Hello there,

This happens because of the way the Access Control List is queried by Windows Explorer to determine if the folder is shared. Because this folder you tried to rename is a child folder of a parent folder and the two folders have a different security entries, Windows will treat as a shared folder. This causes Explorer to give you the warning that you received.

Just double check, this must be a shared folder.

Hope this helps!

I often "misplace" files that turn up later in different places. When I enter data into a file, I never know where it will show up... or not! E.g., there are at least 4 Desktops in File explorer and they don't always have the same information buried in them. Some files seem lost and suddenly they turn up in a place with the the same sub-adress.1) Desktop2) Desktop/my name/Desktop3) Desktop/This PC/Desktop4) Desktop/This PC/LOCAL DISK (C:)/Users/my name/DesktopHow can I simplify this so that when I put something in I can count on it being in just ONE place, and there are no folders with similar addresses where it may or may not be located? Something about the way FE is set up seems redundant but really isn't!

Hello everyone,

I'm using a laptop (with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit installed) as a DVR and media streamer to all other devices in the house.
My TV recordings are recorded into a temporary folder and when the recording is finished the program moves the files into the My Videos folder.

The My Videos folder is shared so we can watch the recordings from the Xbox downstairs or other Windows 7 devices in the house.
This worked pretty well in the past but for some reason new recordings (or downloads) aren't shared by default anymore. All files have a small lock icon (shared with nobody) and I have to manually share new files within an already shared folder.

This is pretty annoying and takes away the convenience.

I would appreciate any tip to fix this problem to have all files in the shared folder(s) shared by default.

Thanks in advance!

A:New files aren't shared in shared folder

It's easy once you know how, just right click the C:/Video's folder and choose properties, Security tab then Advanced button, then just put a check mark where it says "Replace all Child Object Permission Entries with Inheritable Permissions Entries from this Object, then hit Apply, OK....this will fix the problem you described.

Hey everyone.

I use both Linux (Ubuntu 10.04, 2.6.33-AMD64) and Windows 7 professional, and sometimes I get a little boggled at the apparent lack of functionality in W7 in the following situation.

I have a network share in the root of my drive that I've called "DropBox" where my boss and I can both put files to be shared via the network. I have a bunch of files in "Downloads" directory that I'd like to be able to share at various times, but would rather not have my downloads directory directly shared as it violates my sense of order. IE, I would much rather have one shared folder from which you can reach all the other content I need to share on the drive, and if I need to un-share something, simply delete the shortcut, and Voila! instant anti-sharing.

Figure 1. Clean Sharing

In Ubuntu, you can create a symlink within a shared folder that points to a non shared folder which allows network users to access that non-shared folder.

Does this functionality exist in W7?

Thanks,
NYTCG

A:Shared Shortcut to non-shared folder.

Okay, so I solved this issue on my own =) TGFG! The answer lies in the MKLink command.

Specifically: mklink /D /J Downloads "C:\Users\Robert\Downloads\"

Works like a charm. All networked machines have access to my non-shared directory through the shared folder, and it looks nice and clean on the viewers end.

Thanks for letting me rubber duck this one.

I share files on my home network between my desktop PC and my laptop. I often move files between the two computers by placing folders on the desktops and then working with them or moving them to specific folders. The network for my laptop lists its desktop folder, but for the desktop PC, the topline \Users root folder is listed, not the desktop. Network and sharing work just fine. But how do I list the shared PC desktop folder so that I don?t have to drill down through the \Users file structure to reach the desktop folder?

I guess this may be a tiny bit off the subject here, but I am attempting this in windows 7.

I have a program file manager tool called 'Directory Opus' that is capable of calling windows external programs and passing them the current directory the file manager is sitting on.

So far so good.

Now I want to call a cygwin (linux/unix emulator for windows) terminal with that file manager.

Checking properties on the cygwin Icon I got the path: C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico -

So it is a path to a command and an argument to that command.

Actually I guess it is 2 arguments to a command since I think '-' in that position means to feed anything on STDIN to the command. At least that would be true in unix shell programming.

So using the Directory opus setup I pass this call:
'@async:C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico - <and here add {s}>'

So the call ends up:
'@async:C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico - {s}'

That call does just what it is supposed to. It passed the current file absolute address however cygwin terminal does not understand the windows path notation. If I were passing it: C:\subdir\blah\ It would just say 'No such file' Cygwin terminal wants to see /cygdrive/c/subdir/blah Or at least I think that is what is happing.

So to cut to the chase.... I'd like to put a little wrapper to Cygwin terminal in there with the code necessary to convert 'C:\subdir\blah\' to '/cygdrive/c/subdir/blah/'

But, I do not know how ... Read more

I can't seem to predict when XP Pro SP2 will let me move a folder from SharedDocs\My Videos

Sometimes I can just grab the folder that I copied from another machine and placed in My Videos and just
drag it with the Left Mouse Button into another folder on C:\ and it just moves it by changing the directory entries. Then sometimes when I do that, it copies all the files!! Well with video files that's pretty slow!!

Windows 7 auto update in the middle of the night messed everything up. My desktop is empty, my documents and other folders are also empty.

However, if I navigate through MyComputer, I can still see the files where they should be. Windows is presenting me with a new and empty directory instead.

EXAMPLE:

REAL DIRECTORY (where my files exist): Computer/C:/Users/PC/Downloads

START MENU DIRECTORY (empty when you click downloads): Computer/C:/Windows/System32/config/systemprofile/Downloads.
So, the start menu navigation used to take me to the correct folder and is now taking me to some Sys32/config nonsense folder.

How do I get the desktop and start menu to access the correct folders like it used to before the update. My data and files are not deleted...it just seems that way because they aren't showing the right folders.

%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\UserName...
Scroll through the SID's until you find the one with the screwy name, like
%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\youruserid.2
This is just an example, could be something else weird.
Just edit the Key to remove the ".2", and it will point the user back to their old profile...
Got this from TechRepublic.com but it's no longer there.

plz help me, thanks

A:Changing Intel GMA4500MHD Shared Memory

Hi aminuddin!

You need to provide me the motherboard name and model.

Otherwise, you can go into the BIOS and look for an option to increase shared memory.

Look for something with the option DVMT. and set it to "Maximum DVMT" if available or just "DVMT".

That should help you.
Cheers!

P.S: Intel GMA sukz! you have to get a dedicated graphics card if you wanna play games.

Hello all, my main machine Win 7 (connected via wire on my LAN) has 3 HDD, which I share out across my LAN with full permissions enabled.

I recently changed the password on my main machine and lost connectivity from my other machines (two laptops one desktop) I can see the shared drives on the network tree but when I try to connect it tells me I don't have permissions to access the drives.
My feeling is that this is due to the password change, when I originally connect to the networks shares from the other machines I was asked for a username & password, when suppled connection was granted. I did tick the remember password box at this stage.

How do I evoke the username & password dialog box again to re-authenticate with the new password?

Cheers

PatDee

A:Can't connect to shared drives after changing password

Hi, welcome to the forums

If you type credential into the start menu and click 'Credential Manager' you should be able to see ALL stored password details including shared network access passwords. From there you can either 'Remove' or 'Edit' the credential to fit the new criteria, in this case your password.

Hope it helps

Hi

I have a strange problem, I can`t seem to fix.
I have a shared folder with many sub folders.
If I access this from another computer, it just shows some of
the folders (ex: of 120 it shows 15).
For another folder on the same server, with the same setup, it`s
not at problem.

I have checked the sharing permissions, and all of them are the same
on both shared folders.

All run Win 7 Ultimate.
Router: TP-Link TL-WR941ND, with DD-WRT v24-sp2 (11/21/10) std - build 15778
Server connected with cable, laptop via WiFi. (But tried with cable on both,
no difference)
All use Windows Firewall and Security Essentials.

And this are the same problem on all computers that's trying to open that folder.

This all happened after a reinstall of Windows.
Kindly

I have an ASUS notebook with an ATI Radeon Express 200m video card which takes up 128mb shared memory. I only have 512 mb of RAM so I want the shared memory to be 64mb only. I asked the technicians where I bought the laptop to change the shared memory and they said that it cannot be changed (they've checked the BIOS and found out there is no option to change the shared memory there - and they said that you can only change the shared memory thru the BIOS). Is it possible to change the shared memory used by the card? If it is, is there another way?

I have a user who is having an issue with Outlook 2007. The device is on the work domain, which is managed using Group Policy. The drive was imaged from a master image, like every other drive in our nearly 5,000 device network. My point is, this is something localized to the user or her machine.

Anyway, the user has many shared calendars that she views all at once. When viewing them, her preferred and current view is Day/Week/Month. The problem is that she switches constantly between her calendar(s) and email. Sometimes, when she switches to email and then back to calendar (by selecting between the two on the lower left menu), the calendars suddenly change from Day/Week/Month view to All Appointments view. When she changes it back manually, she has to reselect all of the shared calendars that she was viewing. This happens multiple times a day.

I already ran a macro to lock the current view, but the issue persists. Online research got me nowhere, and upgrading to Outlook 2010 is not an option right now.

What am I missing here? She wants the Day/Week/Month view to always stay. Why would it randomly change back to All Appointments view when switching between email and calendars?

I was hoping to be able to change the default icon for "My Videos" folder. I have renamed it to "Downloads" to use as my download folder. I was hoping to be able to do this without creating a desktop.ini file. I'm hoping it's a registry entry, or failing that, I could change the icon in the dll, but a registry entry would be a lot easier.

Also, the "Recent" folder is never used, and I'd like to hide it from the user\recent list.

I included a picture to make it easier to understand what I'm talking about. I edited out the user name for privacy reasons.

A:Can you keep file dates from changing when moving folder to folder

If you move within folders on the same drive the date and time are preserved. If you move from one drive to another the create date changes.

A google search indicates RoboCopy can do this (or at least I think that's what it was saying).

If you are running homegroup you need to change it. Homegroup is for win 7 machines only and it uses IPv6. For networks with mixed environments workgroup is a better alternative. to test for yourself create a new network connection using workgroup and if it works disable Ipv6 and kill homegroup

Windowns Firewall and AV is turned off, as we use a router. I can go to the other computer and confirm that the folders I need access to are shared and can be edited by others. I return to my computer and when I try to browse to that folder get the following: "\\server\foldername is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the admin... Not enough server storage is available to process this command." Both computers have lots of memory and disk space.

Hi ,
We have NT 4 server w/ Win98 desktops.
I am attempting to go paperless.
I would like to create a shared folder that will allow my
students to drop their assignemnts into it , but not allow
them to open the folder or see/opne the other files, thus allowing them to acces the
other student's files.
I have tried (on the NT server)giving the students:
1. Add: write & execute (WX)
2. Add & Read: read, write & execute (RWX)

I have also tried sharing from a Win98 desktop.

Sometime I can access the folder on the desktop but not via an app (i.e.Word)
What I end up with is either a folder they can't access
or a folder that they can get to everything.

I rememebr setting up a "Drop box" many years ago with
Apple share.
How do I do this with NT 4 or Win 98?
Thanks.

I'm trying to share a folder on my server running "Windows Advanced Server 2000". I can create the shared folder, put permissions on it, and users and what not. So the default is set to everyone, which is what I want. I want anybody to access this shared folder on my network. My problem is when I try to detect the share or use it from one of my network computers it prompts me for a user name and password. This wouldn't bug me so much if I could actually log into the share with my credentials. I've tried every user name and password I've ever used setting up that server including the administrator credentials and it won't let me log into my share folder. I've gone through all the tutorials on how to set up shares on windows 2000, it should just let me log into the share if I leave it default to everyone. I have no idea why it's even prompting me for a login, or why my credentials won't work. So my questions are, #1 Am I right that when I click to share a folder that the default "everyone" means that I should be able to access the share without credentials? #2 Is there any reason why my administrator credentials don't work to login into the share? And there is only one user account on the computer, and it's the administrator account. So I assume if I had to login with anything it would be those credentials.

A:Permissions Shared folder

I couldn't find an update button, so sorry for the double post. I guess I can login to my share with the computer administrator credentials. So my only question is, how do I make a shared folder that anyone can access on my network without credentials?

I have XP home. I recently created a user account for my wife on my computer. (Bad move, I hear you all say!) I did what I thought XP was telling me to do: "drag the folder to shared documents". I took this to mean "move" rather than "copy". As a result, I appear to have lost ALL my dear lady's data in one go. The shared documents folder now has a folder in it with the correct title, but it says it is empty, and when I click on it, it says access is denied. The folder is missing from its original location, as you would expect if it has been moved. "Search" reveals that the files which were in the folder, are nowhere to be seen on the computer. Please help to avoid unmentionable consequences. Can I restore/recover the data? Thanks

A:Shared folder trouble.

It's possible that the permisssions on the shared folder have got corrupted.
- reboot into safe mode
- login as Administrator or a user with admin privileges
- run explorer
- right-click on Shared Documents, and choose Sharing and Security...
- click on the Security tab
- make sure that the the permissions are set to allow All Users full acccess; if you have any problems then you might need to click on the Advanced button and take ownership of the folder.
- now check the contenst of the folder to see if any files have appeared.

For more detailed instructions on setting folder permissions use google.

Getting following message on our 20 computer XP Pro and W98 p2p network:

Error Message: no more connections can be made to this remote computer at this time because there are already as many connections as the computer can accept.

Have a XP Pro machine in a lab of 6 XP computer and 14 W98 machines. I am used to sharing a folder and letting a many machines use a shared folder on w98. Obviously WXP is controlling this more than W98. Want to use shared folder on WXP as location for any students to open and save files as students come and go through day. Have a drive L: mapped to this folder and seems to work fine for several days and then start getting the above message. I am not in classroom so when I get there some machines will make the connection while others can't. I end up restarting some machines and manage to get machines to reconnect.

Am I bumping into an issue of only 10 connections allowed to a shared folder on a WXP machine. Read something about that on another site. It seems that I have been able to get all 20 machines to connect to the drive but perhaps I am closing the window as I move around room. If there is some limit of 10 connections is it possible to get up to 20 connections?

Any thoughts??

I have major problem.

I am unable to open, scan or even touch my shared folder with the mouse.

I have Norton Internet Security 2005 (updated regularly via subscription) and Ad-Aware SE Personal. Both are unable to scan C:documents and settings/ejer/shared

When any scanning reaches the folder scanning stops and closes down automatically and computer returns to desktop...like everything is normal. Other running programs like Internet explorer etc. continue keeps running in normal state.

This problem occured when file sharing program Limewire (Limewire.com) was running and I think I've been attacked by hacker or virus.

I now have downloaded Unlocker and Dr. Delete and both are unable either delete or even open shared folder. I have updated windows xp ect. and it doesnt help.

I have Windows 7 Professional x64.

My pictures are located in this folder: L:\Users\<name>\My Pictures

I want to share this folder with another user on my computer. Can't do it.

Simply altering the folder's permissions doesn't work. If I change permissions so that the folder in question does not inherit any permissions from parent folders, and instead allow my user read-only access to the folder...access denied.

Alright then, I tried to share the folder with my user. Although sharing usually means sharing with other computers on a network, it also applies to other users on the same machine. But the user can't access the shared folder...access denied.

I could move the folder in question to the Public user, but then everyone can see it.

Holy cow...what does it take to share a folder with another user on the same computer?

hi there guys,,, im no longer using norton as antivirus [well it expired] and now im using avg7.5,,, but i was checking my folders and came across a "symantec shared" folder [screeny on attachmet] and it takes up 280megs of space so i was wondering since i dont use norton anymore can i just delete that folder?,,, thx in advance,,,

A:symantec shared folder,,,

If you have no other Symantec programs installed on your computer (Norton 360, Norton Internet Security, etc), then it would be ok to delete that folder. But...in this day and age of 100+ GB hard drives, 280 megs is just a drop in the bucket in terms of space. Unless you're really cramped for space, there's no harm in leaving it, but, if you want to delete it, there's no harm in that either.

I'm having no luck making a Windows 7 folder write accessible to XP. I've turned off password protected sharing and given both "Everyone" and "Guest" read/write permission. I can access the folder, but whenever I try to transfer a file to it, I get:

"Error Copying File or Folder - Cannot copy ____: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use."

Any suggestions?

I had created shared a folder in SP1 so that I could monitor my kids using some software (guardian monitor). When i loaded SP2, the software acts as if the folder could not be written to and fails to launch. The folder is in the shared documents folder but the "read only" box is always checked even after I change it. Any clues? Thanks.

I shared my desktop so my 2000 machines can access them...but it says access denied! I have access to a program folder, my 3 other hard drives, but no desktop--any ideas? I tried with a 98 machine, same story, can't get to the desktop "Access is denied"

A:Can't Access Shared Folder In Xp

I am not actually sure you can share your desktop. Thats kind of like the working area for the local user. If you want access to something specific on the desktop try sharing that item specifically.

You may want to try manually mapping the drive.

Hi,

I am trying to fix an issue with our company shared folder at my workplace.

All the computers/laptops have access to a shared folder on the server, but one laptop isn't showing all the folders that are in the shared folder, for example in one folder it is showing 76 folders instead of the 93 that are actually in the folder.

The shared folder also keeps going offline on the laptop. I restarted the laptop and the shared folder was back online again, and I tried to sync the folder, but it then disconnected and went offline within 5 minutes of the reboot.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

A:Shared Folder Issues

It sounds like you have Offline Files enabled, and that your offline files database on the laptop is corrupted. You'll have to re-initialize it. See here:

How to re-initialize the offline files cache and database

This is a common issue and I have had to do this quite a few times with my laptop users.

History:

Old PC had to have a hard drive installed.
New PC had to have Windows XP reinstalled.
I can't get the shared folders on each PC desktop to share.
I have Linksys wireless.

Do I have to delete the Local Connection or the 1394 Connection under the Network tab in Control panel and make another one?

Each PC has its own individual name. I have used the same name for the "group".

I appreciate any help you can provide.

A:Shared Folder problem

"I can't get the shared folders on each PC desktop to share" is not enough information for us to give very specific advice. Maybe the following will help. If not, what are you trying to do and what result or error message(s) do you get?

The following will set up a Microsoft Workgroup for File and Printer Sharing assuming the PCs are already networked via router, ad-hoc wireless or Ethernet (directly or using switch or hub).

In Network and Dial-up Connections (Win 2k Pro) or Network Connections (XP) right click on your connection and select &#8216;Properties.&#8217; If not already there, install or add a check mark for &#8220;Client for Microsoft Networks, &#8220;File and Printer sharing &#8230;&#8221; and &#8220;Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).&#8221;

Right click on My Computer and on the Computer Name tab make sure you have a unique computer name and the workgroup name that you want to use for all computers. Change if necessary.

Restart the PC.

You must uninstall or properly configure any 3rd party firewalls on each machine.

If using the XP SP2 firewall: Control Panel &#8211; Windows Firewall &#8211; on the General tab it should be &#8220;On&#8221; and on the Exceptions tab &#8220;File and Printer Sharing&#8221; should be selected.

The Shared Documents folder is automatically shared. Any other folders or printers you want to share, just right click on them and sharing ... . When sharing a printer, acce... Read more

I have two computers, Vista Home Premium SP2 and XP SP2. Both belong to the same workgroup.

Tonight I could see the XP computer from Vista. Then I rebooted the Vista computer and I can no longer see the XP computer's shared files.

They are both connected via a linksys wireless router.

I have Norton on both; both have the windows firewall turned off.

Any ideas where to look for the problem(s)?

Thanks.

A:Unable to see shared folder on XP

do you have norton antivirus or do you have norton internet securtiy/360 both of these products come with intergrated firewalls so even if you turn the windows firewall off you would still have to turn manaully turn off nortons firwall. Sometime you must configure the firewall to accept connections from your network
Also Check the network and sharing center to see if file sharing and public folder sharing is enabled. Try this out and tell us what happens

thanks

I have a Desktop PC which is running Windows Vista Business. I have a folder being shared on it (with Everyone allowed)

File sharing is turned on, Password requirement is turned off.

I have two laptops. One Has Windows XP Home. It can see and access the shared folder on the Vista Business PC with no problems.

My other laptop has Windows Vista Home Premium. I need to access the shared folder on the Vista Business machine from this laptop. It can see the Vista Business machine, and it can see that it has a shared folder. However, when trying to access this shared folder from the Vista Home Prem laptop, it gives me an error message about not having permissions and that access is denied.

All 3 computers are in the same workgroup.

As it happens, the XP Home laptop has some shared folders. I AM able to see and access the shared folders on the XP laptop FROM the Vista laptop.

I am stumped. Does anyone have any ideas?

A:Cannot Access Shared Folder

Also, from the Vista laptop I CAN access the "Public" shared folder on the Vista Business PC.

As such I don't believe it can be a firewall issue.

The permissions on the shared folder I am trying to access are set to Full Control for Everyone.

Need help with a network share issue.

I have 2 Win7 PC?s running on a home network. I have various folders set up for shared access across the network and they work fine. However, I run a game on the main PC with add-ons that run on the 2nd PC. They run OK and connect with each other, but to get full functionality the add-on on the 2nd PC needs to be able to access the game folder on the main PC another.

The game folder is in the Program Files (x86) folder and I have set it up as a share. The PC and the shared folder appears in the network section on the 2nd PC. However, when I try to access it, it tells me that Windows cannot access the location because I do not have the permissions etc. I have checked and re-checked the share settings on the main PC and they seem to be OK.

All the oher folders I have shared are fine, eg My Doc, Music etc.

At a loss with this.
Andrew

hello there i encounter another problem on my PC running Windows XP SP3

i already OFF / disabled my Anti-Virus because i am thinking it was the cause of this, but it won't, it's not.. there is something wrong with my system..

any kind of solution for this? i've tried on google but none of those are work perfectly..

A:Shared Folder won't check

You can't make the folder "so that only you have access" and share it with others on the network at the same time. Un-select "Make this folder private" and you should be able to choose to share it on the network.

I run XP Home and recently added an external HD. For some reason when I play MP3 Playlist songs in Windows Media Player the only songs that can be played/recognized are on the "G" drive. It seems these songs used to be "F" drive songs as all the ones that are not recognized now are "F:\My Shared Folder" or "F:\My Downloads".
Do I need to rename the folders to "G" from "F" and if so....how ?

Thanks,
Mike

A:G:\My Shared Folder - Problems !

try and remove the songs that are not recognized, and re-add them under their new location. Problem might be media player is looking for the songs under the old file path (f:\) and not their new location on your G:\

I'm trying to access ghost.exe which I have copeid to shared folder C:\Ghost on Vista Home Basic, using a network drive mapping DOS boot disk.
The boot disk is obtainable free to download at Universal TCP/IP Network Bootdisk for M$ Networks.
I have correctly configured the IP addresses in the config file on the boot disk, and configured net use G: \\vistab\ghost as the drive to be mapped.
I have shared the c:\ghost folder for Everyone group full control and also added Everyone group to security permissions full control.
Each time I try to access the folder from the dos prompt run from the floppy boot disk I get 'Error 5 - Access Denied'.
I can ping vistab from dos and recieve a reply, and vice versa.
I turned off Windows Firewall and turned off Password Protected folder sharing.
Still can't get it to work.
Has anyone had any experience with this please?

Hi! I hope someone can help me with this. Before "homegroups" in Win 7, I used to have my computers in a home network, see both computers on my network, and then put a shortcut to a shared folder on my desktop and my roommate's. Then my roommate or I would just go there to check on a file the other had just put there, or I could send her a file, she could work on it and put it back. I have been struggling with homegroups like crazy, I can't get the computers to see each other, and I can't even find a way to put a shortcut on my desktop! What can I do to do this "the old way"? Both computers are connected to the same network, but I can't see the other one anywhere!

I have one sick puppy right now. Thanks to Limewire and stupidly downloading something harmful I am unable to open and/or delete anything from my shared folder. I have run Norton and antispy ware but the spyware program shuts down when ever it reaches the shared folder. Every time I try to open it it says Error signature AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: unknown ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00006770

I also managed to download the spydawn annoyance. I think I found a way to delete it but I can't do anything until I get this folder issue solved.

Hi all,

I have a server running on Windows Server 2008. It's connected to network and has a shared folder. The shared folder is important and accessed frequently.
When I try to access the shared folder by typing \\<server IP Address>\ from Windows + Run, I've got an error message said that "The specified network is no longer available".
I remote the server, check the services with services.msc and find that Computer Browser service doesn't start while it usually starts automatically. When I try to start it, I've got an error message "Error 230 : The pipe state is invalid".
I've searched from Google but don't find any information useful.

The only way to gain access to the shared folder I've found is to remote the server and it's succeeded.

My questions are :
1. Does Computer Browser service is responsible about no access to the shared folder from the server?
2. How to start the Computer Browser service? If it is possible, I don't want to restart the server.

Regards,
Durz
