How do I get Win 7 to not use WZC as configuration utility?

Q: How do I get Win 7 to not use WZC as configuration utility?

Hi all. I have Win 7 Ultimate. I recently bought a usb turbotenna to catch wifi. It worked fine with the Ralink software. Ralink worked in conjunction with wzc as I set it up that way while installing the software. After a few days, I had what I thought was trouble so I uninstalled the Ralink software. I then plugged in the usb adapter and let windows load it's own drivers. Few days after that, I reinstalled the Ralink software and opted to "Use wzc as configuration utility" instead of using Ralink's. Ever since then, while I can still see and log on to networks using windows, the Ralink utility now shows NO networks. It now shows, "NIC or driver not ready". After several uninstall/reinstall, Windows will not relinquish it's primary control. I want to go back to Ralink showing networks and letting me connect through it's site survey.

Would uninstalling the Broadcom wireless connection be the solution? How do I get it to once again be secondary?

A: How do I get Win 7 to not use WZC as configuration utility?

Hi Techdude1,

Having a wireless utility manager running and take control of wireless connection can/may conflict with the native WLAN Auto Config if both are enabled. You may uninstall the utility but make sure that WLAN Auto config is on started mode if you want to go with thir router. Others have luck using the other way. See which one would work best for you.

Yesterday I spent 45 min. on the phone with the Logitech Tech.guy. My new wireless keyboard (LX 501) failed to operate as it should. The small scroll wheel, cap lock, my document and several other keys did not work. The tech guy was able to walk me thru several things and it worked fine after that.
Today after boothig up I was back to 1st base again. so I did the routine that the tech guy walked me thru and things are again working.
At one point when I had the tech guy on the line he said that my computer (Dell 2400) was likely booting up wrong, we went to the "System Configuration Utility and this is how it is laid out.
General Tab Start up Selection
Button Norman Startup
Button Diagnostic Startup
Button Selective Startup (This is Checked)
Box Process System ini file (This is checked)
Box Process Win.ini file (This is checked)
Box Load startup items (This is checked)
Button Use original boot ini (This is checked)
Tech guy seems to think the Normal startup button should be checked but would not recomend that I change the way things were he said to call Dell
How about you guys

Hi, Are there any other users that could have done changes to Msconfig? They can if they are at admin level on XP by default, all users are able to make these changes.

Usually, the Normal setting is checked...you can look under Startups and see if there are any boxes without checkmarks, post what the entry says, maybe we can advise about re-checking it. Don't just put a check in it now...post what ones are not checkmarked OK?

I was infected by 6 false trojan alerts. I ran Malwarebytes and it caught them and removed them but on my System Configuration Utility- Startup, there are two items. One begins with ~tmph and the other one starts with "a" and I can't read the whole address. I unchecked both but how do I get rid of them and how can I see the whole address? They are both unframiliar to me.

MSCONFIG.EXE is a troubleshooting tool - not a fixing tool.First, re-enable them in MSCONFIG, then use this free tool to locate them and disable/delete them: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysintern...s/Autoruns.mspxIf you have difficulties with this tool, post back and we'll see if we can get the address for another one from garmanma.

Hello, In my "msconfig" box there is an entry under win.ini called
[MCI Extensions.BAK] Could someone tell me what this is for as I would like to delete it if no use. It has been disabled for as long as I can remember. Many thanks.

A:System Configuration Utility

MCI has to do with communications devices and I believe multi-media as well.

since is has the ".BAK" that would give the impression that it was backed up brolly due to some system changes.

Uncheck it, reboot the system and test your functionality. *IF* things still work, you should be able to safely remove it.
Good Luck!

I need to know how to get to the general tab to make the changes mentioned above. I have no idea where this utility or the general tab is. All help appreciated.

When that message appears, click the "don't show this message again" box.

Anytime you use MSCONFIG to UNselect startup apps, you get this (annoying) message.

I am running Windows XP Professional. When i get into the Startup menu within the System Configuration Utility i can see a number of Startup Items listed together with the Command and Location description for each Startup item. The location description is the same for each startup item - "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run." However there are 3 boxes ticked under the Startup Item heading with no startup item details (blank), no details under the Command heading (blank) but under the Location heading it shows - "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run."
Can anyone tell me why I would have details showing under the Location heading in three instances but nothing showing under the corresponding Startup Item and Command headings?

I am trying to remove Norton Antivirus 2005 from Windows XP, but can not remove it from the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs option. The instructions I received from Norton recommends that I begin at Start, Run, enter "msconfig" and then proceed through the Systems Configuration Utility window by making sure that "ccApp" is checked. My problem is that I can't get the SCU window to stay open when I enter msconfig into the Run box. It only appears for a brief second.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks!

A:System Configuration Utility

Hi clw and welcome to BC

The fact that msconfig won't stay open is a classic sympton of spyware. When that happens you can't usually access regedit.exe from Run or your Internet Options from the Tools menu in IE.

Suggest you post a log in the HiJack This forum on this site after folllowing the instructions about posting a HiJack log at the top of the forum.

I've been having problems getting Dlink wireless adapters to work on my system. It's Win98se and when I get to the point of loading the configuration utility the system freezes.

I've managed to get what looks like a good driver for the PCI card installed but I can't install the wireless configuration utility from the CD without also installing the driver from the CD which will replace the working driver I have now. I have tried that several times and it always freezes the system when loading systray.

I got Dlink Tech Support to get me through the process of loading current drivers but they have told me I must use a 3rd party configuration utility since Win98se does not have such a utility built in. That's when they stop talking to me.

I tried Boingo but is fails with a Globals fatal error.

Does anyone know of any other wireless configuration utilities I might be able to sue?

A:wireless configuration utility

Have you tried downloading Dlink's utility from their web site?

My experience with several adaptors is that on the manufacturer's web site the utility and driver are bundled for download, so you get the right utililty for the version of the driver.

does anyone know if there is a way to hide or remove a program from the System configuration utility in the start-up box without shutting down the program. I want to keep a program running but don't want anyone to see what it is running. I have a keylogger running to keep an eye on what/who my kids are talking to, but there very smart and know how to shut it down from the System configuration start up. So please if anyone knows how i can accomplish this please help. Thank you.

A:System configuration utility help.

I believe you can't run this utility unless you are the ADMIN. Make USER accounts for the kids. They can't access MSCONFIG. But then, if they know the process name of the program, then Ctrl+Alt+Del may allow them to end it anyway. Might be a 3rd party software that can do what you want.

I have home-worked the net and got nowhere so far, so I will ask my friends here. This unknown intruder has the impressive name of - Browser Configuration Utility Auto-Recovery Service.

Recently, I have noticed BCU.exe and BCUService.exe pop up in my Active Processes List. I do not know where it came from or what program owns it. The providers appear to be DeviceVM.
It takes 296K of Memory, with a memory peak of 2,212K and 712K VM. It all sounds one hell of a lot of resource. AND for whom or what ?

I have disabled BCU.exe using CCleaner and Blocked the files using Comodo Defense+, but it still comes up on the running processes and keeps asking Comodo to modify the Registry key which is disabled every few seconds. Consequently the Comodo Defense Events are growing at a massive rate.

The whole thing is a pain. I wish I could quarantine every bit of it, but none of my several security programs pick it up as a threat.

Please can anybody tell me what this parasite is ? Where did it come from ?
How can I get rid of it ?
The only download I have recently had worth a mention is Sandboxie - surely that did not place this nuisance on my PC ?

Any explanations and help will be greatly appreciated.

A:BCU - Browser Configuration Utility

Browser Configuration Utility is not a virus or dangerous. I assume you have a Gigabyte motherboard and when installing the system this program gets installed. There is also a readme file stating "The Browser Configuration Utility is an easy-to-install, easy-to-use, powerful search engine." I found it here on a Windows 7 system -- C:\Program Files\DeviceVM\Browser Configuration UtilityThis file mentions"The Browser Configuration Utility is an easy-to-install, easy-to-use, powerful search engine.""In the Address Bar of either Internet Explorer 6, 7, or 8, type the string of characters you want to search for, then press the <Enter> key. The default Address Bar search engine is Yandex (for Russian), Baidu (for Simplified Chinese), or Yahoo (for all others), depending on your language and location."You can safely uninstall by using Windows control panel's Add/remove programs utility to uninstall the Browser Configuration Utility and restore your browser autosearch function back to normal.

Hi,

I find on the Startup Tab of Systems Configuration Utility that there are four programs listed that are no longer on my computer and that were viruses, that's why they are not on my computer any more. But they are still listed on the Startup tab on Systems Configuration Utility. Is there a way to get them off the Startup tab on Sys. Con. Utility? Why would Sys. Con. Utility list programs not on the computer anyhow? These were viruses so there is a little concern but more then that the computer still recommends to have them on at startup? Any ideas?
I'm pretty sure that they are not on the computer any more but I kind of don't even want them listed sense they were viruses. Please let me know if you know how to remove them from this registry. Thank you.

A better and safer approach would be to submit a HJT log to make sure they are not still there, at least I'd feel better about recommending any registry changes knowing for sure that you have an uninfected machine, John. I do run>MSconfig and msconfig comes up. I deselect several programs in the startup and services tabs and exit, so the window comes up saying I have to restart my computer for the changes to take effect. I click restart and the computer reboots. On my desktop comes a window about the System Configuration Utility and how some things have changed. A large section of the window is missing, so that the extreme bottom end of the window is a checkable box that says "Do not show this message again" which I select. However, this System Configuration Utility window pops up every time I boot up my computer. But when I put the computer back in normal mode, the window doesn't pop up on reboots. What's going on?

I just (today) overcame this...I'm not sure at all how it happened or what may have caused it, so I can't really be of much help.

My situation started a couple of days ago when I suddenly had these messages at startup which referred to files which could not be found. I used a combination of Autoruns, msconfig, and regedit...to track down and manually delete any/all references to these two files. My system now boots up normally .

So...I can't tell you what it was or how it happened but I can say that deleting any/all registry and file references took care of it on my system.

I don't think it was malware of any sort, but I'm no expert at determining such.

Are all of these supposed to be checked and highlighted like this? I've noticed some greater than usual memory usage and cannot remember if these are all supposed to be checked.
Any help or comments appreciated.

Yes that is supposed to be check once you edit/disable/enable something in the startup it will be changed to selective startup. That is normal, the only difference I have is Load system services is checked for mine and yours is higlighted. I don't think it makes a big diffrence though.

The System Configuration Utility is on automatic prompt when I start up my computer.

I made changes to my services and start ups.

I checked the box to accept the changes and stop the System Configuration Utility from poping up on start up but it continues.

How do I stop it.

Hi, We have a script using the HP BiOS Utility to change the vtx setting but we are currently experiencing problems. This script has been developped by a 3rd party and its been succesfully tested on multiple HP Models. In our environment, we are using the following HP workstations:HP Compaq 8100 Elite SFFHP Compaq 8200 Elite SFFHP Compaq Elite 8300 SFF By default, our BIOS doesn't have any password, the script will run the HP BIOS Utility with admin privilege, add a temporary password, enable the Vtx setting and remove the password. On the next reboot, we will run our software that needs vtx enable but the program will not see  that vtx is enable. If we enter the BIOS manually,  the Vtx setting will be enable, the only way that the software will recognize that vtx is enable is if we do another change to the BIOS and save that change.  It seems like Windows is not seeing the change that the BIOS utility did.  The intriging part is that on some machines, the script will work and the software will see the change. We have run the script numerous times, on multiple machines and on our different models but we can determine any patern and identify why it sometimes work. I was wondering if this is a known issue and if anyone already encoutered this. Thank you,

System Configuration Utility would run at startup. This can be resolved by putting a check mark on the checkbox on the first screen that comes up saying System Configuration Utiity has been modified.

I have decided to spend some time trying to reduce my processes in my task manager. I am up to 66 on with WIN 64XP Pro and it's taking a long time to finish booting.

As I started this process, I checked out my System Configuration Utility and found an odd item in the startup list.

It's listed simply as a startup item called cQE with a command listed only as cQE also. The location of it is as follows.

SOFTWARE\wow6432Node\microsoft\windows\currentversion\Run

When I go to my registry, I can find that series under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE but cQE isn't found in Run. I can't find that series anywhere else in the registry but I may not know where to look.

Can someone tell me if this item is dangerous and if so, how to remove it?
Thanks

A:Mysterious cQE in System Configuration Utility

Is it still enabled?

You'll have to find out what it is before you can decide whether to keep it. Where is the program located?

Check a startup manager (I like Startup CPL):

Ashampoo Startup Tuner
Startup Control Panel
MZ Startup Manager
Startup Control Panel (Exe version for Vista)
Emsa Startup Manager
EM Startup Manager
WheresJames Startup Manager

Startup Programs Reference
Startup Database (bleepingcomputer)

If all else fails, you can see all your startups with Autoruns.

Do you have a Gigabyte board? If you do, and this exists: C:\Program Files\GIGABYTE\GEST\GSvr.exe, then it is a power-management utility.

There are also Trojans with that name, and a rootkit could have an entry in that registry location that is invisible to you.

Running XP home

I was trying to network 2 home computers together. I ran the network wizard to do this.
When the computer rebooted I got this message on the screen.

You have used System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way Windows Starts.
The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Winddows starts.
Choose the Normal Startup mode on the General Tab to start Windows in nomal mode and undo the changes you made using System Configuration Utility when Windows starts.

The problem is I don't know how to undo this. I tried doing a system restore from the only restore point I had. This is a brand new system just got it yesterday.

I was hoping I could network it to my all Win98 machine to access my files easily. Didn't work.

Too many programs set to start up automatically, so I went to system configuration utility and selected which programs I want on my start up list. Everytime I have tried that, I run into the following: On startup, the sys config box pops up, along with a message "you have used system configuration utility to change the way Windows starts." I click "OK". I think at that point I see the box (with tabs) showing that I have a selective startup. Then I get a another message that says "you must restart your computer for some of the system config changes to take effect.". The other option is to "exit without restart". I tried hitting 'restart' but that just gets me in a loop. The same thing happens over again...all the same message until I get back to where I have the message '...you must restart your computer for some of the changes...etc. etc.". Makes no sense. So now, I always select 'exit without restart'. Can someone explain what is happening here? I want a selective startup, mostly to keep Hewelett Packard printer stuff from slowing the restart. There was a fax program that was slowing things as well. But since I have done that, every single time I have to go through these messages warning me that I have a selective startup and telling me that I need to restart the computer, over and over again (unless I click on 'exit without restart'. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Keep scrolling down as pics take up a lot of space.

I am trying to clean out things in my start-up procedure that I don't need when I boot up the computer. Initially I disabled everything. One particular item keeps getting put back on automatically somehow after re-boot. This particular item is related to Dell Support Center. I use it occasionally, but don't need it at startup. This is what is being re-selected. (note checked item)

Here is the process with which I performed this. As stated, Initially I did a <disable all> and clicked on <apply> to which I get a message

I click ok to the message above then <OK> to accept changes and I get the same message again to which I answer ok again. This seems to accept the changes. the next thing I see is the choice to restart or exit without restart. Either way when I do eventually restart I get this message below.

If I simply click ok it seems to keep the changes but dumps me back out to the system configuration Utility screen, which I don't want.

IF I check the box "don't show message or launch system config utility", the next time it I restart or power up again everything is as I selected except it puts the item "sprtcmd" back into the startup procedure again. How can I keep my changes and still not show this message everytime I start up?

I used the System Configuration Utility to try to remove some of the items that load on startup but things didn't work as I thought. Now whenever I boot up a System Configuration Utility box comes up with this message:
You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts.
The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts.

Choose the Normal Startup mode on the General tab to start Windows normally and undo the changes you made using the System Configuration Utility.

Box: Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows start.
OK
I checked the box for the "Don't show this message" then clicked OK. Then I opened the System Configuration Utility and on the General tab marked the Normal Startup button, clicked on Apply the closed the utility. Now a box comes up to restart which I do. But when Windows restarts, I get the same System Configuration Utility window.
Anybody know how I fix this?

A:System Configuration Utility problem

Once you have used Msconfig to UNselect programs that start at boot time, you will continually be now running in Selective Startup mode.
Selecting Normal will re-select all the UNselected apps.

The first time you UNselect and reboot you will get the window you mention.
Select the option "don't show again" and it should not appear on the next boot.

DO NOT use msconfig to manage startup options. And don't uncheck anything you don't understand. Download and use Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel to manage startup items. It will not let you remove anything that will cause problems.

My laptop has developed a problem where the System Configuration Utility dialog box appears at every boot. I'm running XP Home edition. This occurs even though I've selected "Normal" startup. Also, I can check the box to not show this dialog box again, yet it continues to appear. After appearing, it will tell me that I must reboot for the changes to become effective.

I've run spyware detectors and antivirus scanners but have come up with nothing. I downloaded a program Startup Monitor to see if it would identify anything. The message that I get upon boot with it is: "The program MSConfig has registered the executable C:\Windows\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe/auto to run at system startup"

Any thoughts about what might be going on?

Thanks for your help.

Hello,

I was going through the programs which are set to start up in the System Configuration Utility, actually going through a list that I found of unnecessary programs which take up CPU and could be turned off safely, as my computer has been very slow for some reason.

There is a program called "1" listed, and it shows it's location in Windows (HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version). The glossary I was using shows a program called "1.exe" listed as a Trojan. However as I stated, it's listed only as "1" as running in my startup programs (1 without the quotations.)

Is this a legitimate program and if so what is it? My antivirus, etc... does not detect it as a virus or trojan.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,
Kleigh

A:System Configuration Utility/startup Programs

In addition to the above, the changes that I made yesterday (I disabled several unnecessary programs) are now enabled again. The changes that I made didn't remain for some reason and I don't know why. My computer has been acting terribly slow and none of the utilities I use have found anything. I get a lot of alerts on Zonealarm, and don't know how many of these are actual intrusion attempts, but I am and have been very concerned about security. I know this is a lot, but any help with these things would be appreciated. I am using Windows XP Home edition.

Hi

You can download and install Autoruns from this site: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s...rnals/bb963902
Once installed run the autoruns.exe application. Agree to the EULA. Wait for autoruns to finish gathering info.
Once done go to file -> save -> then save the file to your desktop.
Attach it to your next post.

Note do not delete or unmark/deselect any of the items in Autoruns.

This a.m. I was greeted by this System Configuration Utility message popup:

-----------------------------------------------------------

Yesterday I used the system configuration utility to untick a program in the Startup menu. Is that why I am getting this message now?

If I follow the directions and select the Normal Startup option, will all the services that I have painstakingly turned off over time start running on startup again? Or will it just load the one application it changed?

Could I restore the registry from a few days ago instead? And, if I do that, will the tracking cookies I finally got rid of by setting them to be deleted at start-up reappear?

Another question I have is, what is the utility used for, if not to make changes? Is it just to look at? What good is it then?

Dell Optiplex running WinXP Pro from a reinstallation, not OEM

At startup I always get a window telling me I have "used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts", which is totally untrue.

It then offers me a box to check to "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts". I haven't checked the box (yet) because I'm afraid I won't be able to ever launch the Utility. So my question is: if I check the box to keep ity from launching at startup, will I be able to run it later run/msconfig?

A:If System Configuration Utility doesn't run at startup, can I run it later?

yes you can check the box so that this doesnt show on startup all the time and you can run msconfig at any time via the run option in your start menu.

I reviewed the above post and while it is extremely informative, I'm not sure it can solve my problem.

Here's what I'm concerned about. In my system configuration utility, when I click on the start up tab, I see the list of programs that are selected or not selected in my start up. I notice "bikini.exe" is listed as one of the start up programs. It has been de-selected by me so it does not start up when I boot my computer. However, the program remains! I've tried a number of software "clean-up" programs to try and get rid of this "bikini.exe" program which resides in my system configuration utility and I can't get rid of it. My computer seems to work fine and I'm not having any operational problems although I am having intermitten problems with my browser (using MS Internet Explorer) as some Web sites that I visit I'm unable to stay at as my brower takes me to a site that tells me it can't find the site I was just at.

Anyway, the point of this post is that I don't understand how to get rid of the bikini.exe file which is listed in my system configuration utility, in the list of programs in the start-up tab but its not selected but I don't know how to get rid of it.

Nothing I have downloaded to clean out my computer has worked. Any suggestions??

Many thanks!!

Just to give a little background on both computers I was teching over the phone both had Windows XP. one had SP1 and the other had SP2.

The First Call:

It was a Dell Computer with Windows XP SP2. He had previously had AOL 9.0 Optimized installed on his computer and then uninstalled and reinstalled AOL 9.0 VR (Vista Ready). He was complaining of experiencing some slowness and AOL freezing. So I checked his processess and they were 29 or 30 which is a good number for XP so then I proceeded to do the normal AOL fixes which fixed the AOL's slowness and freezing. So I thoguht I should try one more thing so I did a MSCONFIG just to see his system configuration utility and to my surprise he was in selective startup and instead of there being a check mark in Load Startup Items there was a green box and all the checkmark boxes were green. Everytime we clicked on Load Startup items the green box would disappear and the text would gray out.
The Second Call:

It was a Compaq Presario with Windows XP SP1. Experiencing same problems as above, AOL slow and freezing. Checked processes and it was 29. ... Read more

I just recently tried getting this app so that I could setup a HD so that it can do something at this point. Thing is that when I went to extract it the files are too large for the floppy, also the app. Thing is that when I run the config utility its asking for a floppy.

ok so this is gonna be a long one:
currently my comp is in safe mode and i am currently typing on someone elses comp because somehow the internet is disabled. so here's what happened:
my sister very sweetly but foolishly went into the system configuration utility to try and fix a harmless problem on the comp but seeing as she didn't know what she was doing, disabled a majority of the programs and rebooted the system. I am not exactly sure what happened after that, but by the time i got to the computer, the damage was already done and i have been thus far unable to fix it at all
so here's what i know:
she somehow disabled a program that is connected to a lot of programs and is causing them not to run
i have been getting multiple varied error messages: "application failed to initialize: 0x800106ba a problem caused this program's service to stop to start the service, restart your computer or search help and support for how to start service manually" and "windows cannot open help and support because a system service is not running to fix this problem start the service named help and support" to name a few
it won't lt me click help and support
i can't run system restore in safe mode
the connection and router are both fine but it won't let me on the internet
i gather that a system service connected to other services has been turned off but i have no idea how to find out which one it is
safe mode was initiated by the comp, not m... Read more

A:system configuration utility comp service issues (any help would be loved)

First, what is the operating system?

It sounds like XP and if so, she probably unchecked all (or at least critical) Windows services.

If it is XP, boot to safe mode (since that's all you can do) then go to Start - Run and type in msconfig and click OK then click on the Services Tab. If you see no check marks beside any of the services there then click on "Enable All" and then on "Apply". Then reboot and see if that solves the problem.

If you see some checked and some unchecked then please report which ones are unchecked before doing anything.

How do you determine what the items are that are listed in the Sys Config Utility (msconfig.exe), startup tab?

My system has a few listed that only have a registry entry listed in the Location column--the other two columns are blank. I'd like to know what they are.

Thanks

Run services.msc and look for it in the Services list. Double click to access its properties ("Wireless Zero Configuration") and set the startup mode to disabled and reboot.

Hi guys !!

The other day I opened my msconfig and in the Startup Items I saw a "Turok Registration"
This item was unchecked... but... The thing here is that I don't have anymore that game installed in my computer !!

That's why I called (ghost) "startup item"

I asked to the boyfriend of my roommate to uninstall that Game
So then later, I checked and it was uninstalled... but I still see that "Turok Registration" is in my Startup Items

I try to search in the path of "Command" so i can delete that entry, but i don't find any of those files it says in there, following that path...so how can I delete that entry form my Start up .

Notice that I want to "Delete" for complete that entry no just disable it , because I don't have that game in my computer.

Thansk very much for help and pls. forgive my ignorance at this and my English, not my first language.

I am using Win 98 2nd Edit. I have a Pentium 111 600 w 28 Gigs. Under the Config screen I see a yellow pencil, the box is unchecked and it reads Devic =C:\Windows\Himen.sys (yellow Pencil) rem C:\windows\emm386.exe REM Header. I notice when I start up on the black screen it says something about 386 Drivers not installed. Pls help. Thx

A:System Configuration Utility Config System

Can you list those lines out individually? It all ran together so I'm not sure what goes where.

Is it REM Header for instance?

Also, is the computer working ok, other than "saying something about 386 drivers"?

In my "services" tab in my "system configuration utility" (accessed via 'msconfig', I count about 75 entrees......all of them checked. Now, I know there a some of them that I need......for example: "AVG Update Service". But there are many (most, in fact) that I haven't a clue about what they do or if I really need them. For example: "Cryptographic Services". What in hell is that? What I'd like to do is disable all the stuff that I don't really need, so that I'm not wasting resources. Thanks for any help anybody can give. If you really come through, another donation will be on the way. But don't get the idea that this is a bribe.

I need to set up three user accounts on two computers the accounts on each computer is going to be monitored.
Each user will be assigned access for certain folder or files and certain applications, like internet explorer.
And all usb ports and dvd drive will be blocked. Only the admin will be allow to have full access.

So i need to do something that allow ( managers) to monitor employees activity on the system during working hours.

On one pc is windows xp pro on the other os windows 7 home premium.

Any idea how i can acomplish this task?

I.was thinking of group policy on both computers but on home premium there is not group policy.

Also the users will be using almost all the same programs and files just the with different information.

Thank you in advance.

A:group policy configuration and computer configuration question

Read this
But for Windows 7 Home Premium you will not have the
Local Security Policy so you may need to upgrade to Windows 7 Pro for that.

This is easier to control with a server like Windows Server 2003 or 2008.

Hi Guys I hope that this doesn't sound too silly a question, but here goes: Laptop bought Dec 2014, Win 8.  Updated to Win 8.1.  Now upgraded to Win 10 via the MS free upgrade. I then ran the "Create recovery media tool" and produced the recovery drive (19GB+) - ie just after the Win 10 upgrade. Does anyone know if I can verify if the USB I have created holds Windows 8, 8.1 or 10? Also, can anyone explain why the same process (home made PC rather than HP laptop) produces a recovery drive of just over 4GB?  Both USBs were created within an hour of each other, and each of the computers has virtually the same 3rd party software on them. Many thanks for your sagacious help. ChilliFix

A:does create recovery media utility create utility for window...

ChilliFix, welcome to the forum. I believe that the Recovery media will be for Windows 8.  This is the original OS.  The app to make it is set for the original configuration.  You would be able to Reset the computer to Win 10 using the Recovery Manager, however. I am not certain of the reason for the difference in the size of the Recovery media.  I believe that it has to do with the fact that it Recovers the OS and all of the apps, as well as, the Recovery partition.  This would be done on a custom computer. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

I have an old P3 system that I let my son use for internet browsing, email, etc. It has been rock solid for 6+ years until lately and I think the issue of not booting properly is that the master CD-ROM gave up the ghost. And so I took that out hoping that is all it will take.

Here is my question (and I feel so much like a noob; I did try to google but I got nothing): Where do I place the tab to take it from slave to single configuration? As slave the tab was placed on the far left in the verticle position. Am I correct in that to make it singular I need to place it horizontally on the bottom two prongs center-right?

I hope I am making myself clear. This is an old system and it has been years since setting it up and I don't have my manuals anywhere. I couldn't even access Buslink's website.

Thanks for your help.

A:CD-RW Configuration - from slave to single configuration?

The jumper will fit on the pins, based on what is imprinted or embossed on the drive. It is usually very difficult to see... but if you use a flashlight or other device you can place at different angles, you can see how the jumper choices are stamped into the metal. Most often the center two are Slave, the right is Master, and the left is Cable Select.
I suggest you jumper it as master.
If it is a known brand, you can find a drawing on the website of the optical drive manufacturer.

Hi,
I apologize if this is not the right section, this seemed to be the most suitable.
I am using a 3D Connexion mouse and when I try to execute an executable file for the software configuration, I get the following error?
"Exception: Unable to cast object of type 'System.Configuration.Internal.ConfigurationManagerInternal' to type 'System.Configuration.Internal.IConfigSystem'"
I've talked with the mouse vendor and they have no idea.  My OS is Win7 64.  Does anybody know what this is?

I hope I'm in the right forum. On my PC which is XP SP3 I've always been able to download, extract, and install files in Zip form. They're usually drivers or software. If I have some utility or software to allows this I'm not aware of it.

My daughters PC which is XP media center SP3 will not allow me to do this. I download and extract them, but I can only open them. I can't install/run the drivers. It's a real issue because the machine needs work and many of the drivers are only available in Zip form. I'm sure there is a simple fix, but I'm just tired of the google thing right now. Thanks
