wifi will not enable after loading last known good configuration

Q: wifi will not enable after loading last known good configuration

hi, i'm using an HP Pavilion g4-1215TX laptop, after loading last known good configuration, my wifi will not enable anymore, even the wifi icon is missing from the taskbar... please help me with this problem, thanks

A: wifi will not enable after loading last known good configuration

Why did you try "last known good configuration" anyway?

Any exclamation or question marks in "device manager"? And is your wireless adapter listed there under "network adapters"?

wifi icon is totally missing in taskbar?

I upgraded my friends HP laptop to Windows 10. The issue now is I can't enable Wifi. The card is recognized correctly in Device manager and no issues is found with it. It looks like it is fine. However in the Network Settings WLAN is set to "Off" and when I try to turn it on it always jumps right back to off. eg. I can't enable it.

HP is now help as they clearly state any laptop bought prior to specific date in 2013 will not get any driver updates from their side for windows 10. (Guys, never buy HP again please...). And updating through device manager only tells me it's the newest driver available.

The Wifi card i Broadcom 4313GN card. I searched for win 10 drivers but did not find anything. They only offer linux drivers on their homepage...

So can anyone either provide a solution to the issue or link to a win 1' driver for this wifi card?

A:Dreaded Win10 WiFi Issue: Can't enable WiFi after Upgrade

I had a similar issue were I was stuck in Aeroplane mode on a cleanly installed W10. Turned out I had to uninstall it from the HID's in Device manager. It's worth checking that he's not stuck in it too. Search for drivers in Windows 7, from the HP website and you'll most likely resolve the issue.

This computer is more than four years old now. It's obviously not the best desktop, but can somebody tell me where this computer stacks up? And a few really important for me questions: Does buying a new computer in parts cost me less? What is more vital - the CPU or the Graphics card (for gaming and video editing).
Here we go:
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+
RAM: 4GB DDR2 at 400Mhz
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
Gaming graphics: 2303 MB Total available graphics memory
Anything else you guys wanna see?

A:Is this configuration still good enough?

It is pretty dated to be honest. Your CPU upgrade options are limited due to the socket type and you'd really benefit from a quad core CPU. Upgrading the graphics would cause a bottleneck from the CPU. Ideally you'd want DDR3 RAM too. My advice would be to save for a new full system if you're considering heavy gaming and video editing.

Hi Everyone, I have a Pentium 3 866, 384 MB RAM, Windows 2000 system here, and this morning I turned it on as ususal, it booted normally, as I went to start the internet, my computer rebooted on its own, and lost some ram.. dropped to 256. I shut down the computer, restarted the ram came back, this has happened before. I then proceeded to load windows and accidently skipped the scan disk, and it went all freaky on me, wouldnt load windows, and sounded almost like a static surge went through my computer, so I rebooted again, let the scan disk run, and it booted up, only to find that I have lost my regular desk top, all my quick launch items are gone, my desktop looks like it did when I had Windows 98 running on here. I would like to go and boot back up to it being normal.. except when i go to last known good configuration, it only gives me one option.. and I cant get my computer back to the way it was. ANYONE that can help me would greatly be appreciated! I am sooo freaked out! I do not want to fdisk/format this computer.. as I have my work files on here too. Is there a way to somehow go and boot back to another day?
Thanks in advance,
Necole...(lost and scared! ( )

Now does anyone knows what if I boot to the 'Last Known Good Configuration'. Does that wipe out the old

Hi, hopefully someone can answer this - it's a bit complex.

At the moment, my XP machine will only start using the "Last known good configuration". If I reboot the machine, during XP startup I get a BSOD. Here is a pic of it (taken using my phone!):

Anyway, once the BSOD appears, I power cycle and on the next boot am presented with the opportunity to use "Last known good configuration". I boot using this and the PC boots up fine. The only issues are that:

- The mouse doesn't work on boot, but once you unplug and replug it into the USB port it works again.
- The display settings are a bit wrong, so I have to reset them.
- The printer I installed recently obviously is no longer installed, so I have to install the drivers again each time I boot in this mode.

Now I assume the normal course of things would be that Windows would save the new configuration and use it on the next boot, but that doesn't seem to be happening here. So every time I reboot I have to go through this procedure of getting the BSOD and then using the "Last known good configuration" option.

Interestingly, when booting up from scratch, if I press F8 and use "Last known good configuration" immediately, I still get the BSOD. It only seems to work if you let the BSOD occur first "naturally" and then reboot again and wait to be presented with the prompt.

There is a chance this could be related to some malware. I've been getting redirects ... Read more

Well as stupid as i was, I boot up "last known good configuration" which makes my graphics absoultly crap (ie 4 bits) and I can't seem to change it, then when I reboot and run normally, it's still the same. 640 x 800 4-bit.

Although in safe mode the settings is the same as I was running before. 1280 x1024 32-bit.

If there is any help to recover my working settings to overwrite the crappy "Last known good configuration" on my normal boot, I would appreciate it.

A quick, down and dirty way would be to remove your existing graphics .drivers, then install the latest updated version from the manufacturer's website.

Hi Ruben_Palacios ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

First to make sure that Airplane mode (page 6) is not enabled, there is a hotkey on top of the keyboard with an icon of a plane.  Check if that would enable your wifi .

Else you can try to set the default of the BIOS ,
Access the BIOS by turning off the laptop and then use the Novo button (item2 page 9) on the left side next to power to turn it on. Novo menu would appear to offer BIOS set up , F9 to load defaults F10 to save and exit .

Load up windows and check if there is a wifi icon at the base of the screen.
Check also on device manager if there is any yellow mark or black down arrow  to indicate any need to reinstall drivers from the support website.

Update us how it goes.

Provided you have a WiFi adapter installed in your notebook, you will need to turn on WiFi in your notebook then sign on to an available wireless network.  I suggest downloading your user manual and reading up on this subject for more information. If you do not see any wireless networks, you may need to purchase a Wireless Router from your internet service provider.  If you do not have a WiFi card in your computer you will need to contact Lenovo directly to purchase a compatible card for your specific notebook.

Also - make sure you have a good anti virus software suite installed before you go online.

Good luck.

I recently moved, and when I hooked my computer back up and started it up, it hung at the "Microsoft Corporation" screen with the green progress bar. I let it sit for an hour, and it didn't progress, so I hit the reset button.

On resetting, I can hit F8 and choose to use the last known good configuration, and it boots OK. Safe mode also seems to work. When I reset the computer from the start menu, however, it hangs again at the "Microsoft Corporation" screen. The only way I can get it to boot is to keep using the "Use last known good config" option in the boot menu.

I do remember seeing a warning about a trojan in my antivirus software (AVG) shortly before I packed up the computer, but AVG removed it. I just ran a Windows Defender and AVG scan, and nothing came up in either.

How can I fix Vista so that it boots normally? Using Vista Ultimate on an AMD64 X2 5400+, 2GB RAM, nVidia 8600 GTS...

Thanks!

A:Vista Only Boots With Last Known Good Configuration

Hi mamessner

Try:
1) Boot your computer as you have been, using the Last Known Good otion, and run another round of full-system malware scans - using the most thorough settings as possible (we want to make sure your system restore points are clean)
2) If all is OK, reboot into Safe Mode.
3) From Safe Mode, use the System Restore utility, choosing a restore point from after you removed the malware with AVG, yet before the current startup problem. [System Restore can be found in Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore].

Best of luck

Hello,

I was just wondering how 'safe' this option is and how 'easy is it to use? As every time I login on my laptop I get the same error message

c:\windows\system32\config\systemprofile\desktop refers to a location that is unavailable. it could be on a hard drive on this computer. or on a network. check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the internet or your network and then try again. if it still cannot be located the information might have been moved to a different locationClick to expand...

And I have read that this option Starts Windows with the last registry and driver configuration that worked successfully. And since it was after I had installed a registry clean program, and used it to do a registry clean, that I started having this problem so I am assuming it would work ?
Also when I start my Laptop I first log into the account I originally did those 'changes' on and then the message appears and my desktop does not load. I then switch user's to my other account and windows vista starts up normally on that one, finally I switch back to my original account from this one and everything is back to normal, but it will only start-up normally if I do it exactly like that! AS you can see its a very long and tedious process to go through every time I turn my laptop on.

Any solutions appreciated!
Thanks,

I recently had to replace my hard drive. Prior to that I had been having an issue with sometimes when starting up windows, I would get that screen informing me about some issue that caused windows from starting and then prompting me to either start normally or from the last known good configuration. Choosing either option would always result in windows starting up fine. But about a month or so ago, it finally happened and windows wouldn't start up, it just kept returning to the same screen. After calling HP, they said I needed a new hard drive and sent it to me.

Now just over a month later, I just restarted my computer and I got that black screen again with the prompt. I hadn't payed it much attention with the first hard drive since windows would always start up fine. But now I don't want to keep doing this and end up having to replace the hard drive AGAIN when I've only had it for a short period. After installing the new HD, I pretty much reinstalled all the previous programs that I had on the old one.

So my question is, is there anything I can do to figure out what is causing this screen to appear each time I try to start windows and how can I make it stop? Could it be a certain program I have installed?

I have been having a problem on my computer. First it crashes at a random time. Usually right in the middle of a program. At first when I tried to turn it on it wouldn't go on at all. (no beep then load start screen, just a really strange noise coming from the speakers, and the monitor going into sleep mode) I took it apart, the whole computer, and put it back together again. I tried to isolate the problem by booting it in parts. But this didn't help me figure out anything at all.(connected the ram and video card and booted. Then the disc drives. Then the hard drives).
Now, when I restart it. The asus loading screen comes on, then, it starts and gives me an option of two different versions of xp.
(I am guessing because of the two different hard drives). If I don't choose within 1-2 seconds it automatically tries to boot. I assume it chooses one for me.
After this screen it gives me options for how to load windows (the kind of normal post freeze screen), I have tried all of the options it gives with the same result, I usually choose last good configuration.
This causes it to blue screen (too fast to read, assuming blue screen of death) and crash and reboot. Starting the cycle over again.

The way I got past it was to press f8 before it automatically chose for me. Then it gave me a larger list of choices of how to boot. I chose to reboot from last good configuration. This caused it to go back to the original choice of hard drives but without the 1-2 second time limit. Al... Read more

Hey everybody,
Many people are experiencing Blue Screen crashes and one way of possibly fixing them is setting the BIOS to it's 'Last Known Good Configuration'. In this thread, I will tell you how to do this and hopefully stop your BSOD.

Instructions:
1.) Start your Computer
2.) Press F8 before it starts to load Windows
3.) If you have done this correctly, a screen should appear with the title 'Windows Advanced Options'. Once you have reached this screen, Use the arrow keys to select 'Last Known Good Configuration' and press Enter.

That's all there is to it! But please note, THIS IS NOT A DEFINITE FIX! THIS MAY STOP YOUR BLUE SCREEN OR IT MAY NOT!

Hope this helps,

I have had this hp laptop for about 3 weeks. I have had no problems with it the whole time other than having to get rid of the java application that was doing screwy stuff. But I just recently moved to a different city, and now anytime I try to use wifi it has a mind of its own. Sometimes it will say that I have a limited connection and when I try to troubleshoot the problem it will reset wifi and then come up saying that wifi doesn't have a valid ip configuration. What is up with this I have restored my computer to its factory settings, I have also gone through and tried the repair option on my wifi. Every so often there are no problems at all then some times I get limited. I have only tried to connect on two other wifi networks since I have moved though maybe that is the problem. I called HP and they told me that they think it is a Trojan virus and that I would have to get their 2 year service plan to get their aid which will cost me $300.00 I cannot afford that I am not computer illiterate so then my question is if it is a Trojan how do I get rid of it without having to download anything else? If not a Trojan then HELP LOL

Hi

I'm new to 7 (all my desktops are XP Home).

With XP, the OS just connects automatically to my home wireless network.

However with this netbook, I have to do it manually everytime I reboot - it's a real pain.

Not sure if this OS, hardware or both.

Can anyone advise ?

I've looked at services.msc WiFi service and it's set to automatic already ....

thanks

PS Also, is there a way to get 7 to boot straight to desktop, without having to click on user icon or enter password ?

The reason these 2 are important to me is that this netbook is basically a music server, so when I come in from work etc., I'd like to just power up the netbook then walk off and play stuff via my network (Squeezebox) players

I have Win 7 Home Premium.

Is there an easy way to disable my wireless connection so that (a) it does not enable itself after a reboot, and (b) I don't need to implement the complete process to re-enable the wireless?

Under normal circumstances, the re-enable after a reboot is fine. I can disconnect WiFi from the system tray, and it reconnects after reboot.

But sometimes, I might want wireless to remain disabled after reboot. For example, if I'm doing a database restore, and the database starts synching after a reboot (such as Evernote), it could cause problems :-)

At the moment, I simply switch off the router until the database restore is complete.

I have a problem, normally I press Fn and F5 to bring up the window to enable/disable Wireless Lan and Bluetooth. But it's suddenly stopped working and I cannot switch on my Wireless Lan. This is on IdeaPad Y580 running Windows 7. 1. When I press Fn F5 no window opens. 2. When I press Fn F6 my track pad is enabled/disabled as normal, although I do not see the notification on screen. 3. When I press the Fn and volume or brightness controls, they work perfectly, but again I do not notification on screen, the bars showing level of volume or brightness. 4. Also the One Touch Recovery and One Key Theater buttons are not working. But the audio Mute button is working. 5. I have uninstalled the Lenovo Energy Management software and reinstalled it but no difference. 6. I have checked the BIOS and Wireless Lan is enabled. 7. I also saw that in Task Manager I cannot see utility.exe running. This is really causing me problems, can anyone suggest a fix? Thanks, Dave.

A:Cannot enable wifi using Fn and F5 keys - Y580

In Task Manager I can now see that utility.exe is running as below:  Now I have no idea why the OneKey Recovery software would affect the Lenovo Wireless Device Settings?  But I hope this might help someone else! All the best, Dave.

hi K. Sharath,

From this microsoft article, it looks like the Intel My WiFi technology is not compatible with the Intel(R) WiFi Link 1000 BGN card and is only applicable to certain types of Intel Wi-FI adapters.

To turn ON the Wi-Fi capability of the Lenovo Y460, you will need to:
1. Slide the physical wi-fi switch to the ON position

2. Press Fn+F5 to enable the wireless card (ensure Current Status is set to "ON")

Note:
The Lenovo Energy Management Driver must be installed for the function keys to work

3. If same problem, boot into the BIOS by pressing F2 on startup and ensure that the WLAN Device is Enabled.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi,

I am running Windows XP Home which dual-boots with Mandriva 2006.

I am having trouble booting into SafeMode when the system boots.

I use the F8 key usually but my USB keyboard stopped responding, so I bought a PS2 keyboard which solved the problem.

Now, some months later, the PS2 keyboard refuses to respond to the F8 during startup so I can't access the screen where I am offered the options to choose last known good config, etc.

The last time I recall the F8 key worked was when I installed Mandriva and had some basic installation problems which were resolved.

Since then I haven't needed to reboot into SafeMode.

I can reboot into SafeMode from msconfig>boot.ini tab>check the /SAFEBOOT box in the boot options section and restart.

Can someone pls point me in the direction of learning more about problem solving this as I've searched the forum and web but couldn't find anything related.

Hello,

Does your Wi-Fi antenna have higher dBi which is also called high gain antenna? Anything higher than 7dBi might be doable and possibly you may get a great signal from your college Wi-Fi network. I'm sure that it's detachable or removable so that you may upgrade it to a higher dBi, please check this out.

So. at random times my WIFI gets disabled and when I hover over the symbol it says wifi networks available. When I go into the network list it just goes into a loop that never loads the list.

the none of the network list services can be restarted/stopped/started and in device manager I can not disable/uninstall/re-install my wifi adapter.

The only way to re-enable my wifi is to completely restart my computer with a forced shutdown (hold the power button) because normal methods go into loops that never end.
In the past I did fix it for an extended period of time by downloading the most recent .net Framework, this seemed to solve the problem for months until now.

Hey guys,

There is a difficulty i am facing recently in my girlfriend's house only(in all other places it works fine).
I have recently established a WiFi connection for her to use on her phone. It worked great the first day. It continues to work perfect on her mobile. On my net book, though, i can not see WiFi access point in her house.

It appears randomly for several minutes, i try to connect, it does not want to and then the access point disappears for some uncertain period of time. From time to time it appears and works fine from than on but disappears again if computer goes to sleeping mode...

Do you have any ideas what could it be?

I've just installed a wireless PCI adaptor (Tenda W322P 11N) in my desktop PC but I can't 'enable' it - every time I double click it starts to enable then stops and leaves it disabled with no warning or error messages.

The system is definitely seeing it as it's listed in Device Manager, and if I bring up Network Connections (using ncpa.cpl) it's listed and shown as disabled. Why would windows stop it from being enabled??

I've tried downloading new drivers from the manufacturers site in case the drivers on the disk were old - no difference. I uninstalled it and removed the drivers and then re-booted so windows would use it's own drivers - no difference.

It seems the system has a problem with it, but surely ONE of the drivers would work if it was a driver problem?

A:Windows wont let me enable wifi adaptor

the software driver on their site is up to version 4.
If you are running on the driver off the disk it may be problematic.

Unfortunately, I believe I'll need to do one of the above to get everything back to normal. A partial list of some of the recent changes made to my laptop include installing numerous MS updates, WMP11, all updated drivers...and uninstalling many unused applications. Some of these were later reinstalled and updated, too many to list. The main problem relates to no audio from the CD/DVD now, or from WMP 10 or 11, though SonicStage plays audio fine. I also get error msgs on boot up, related to Realtek HD Audio, that state:RTHDCPL.EXE ...Application failed to initialize (0xc00000033)ALCWZRD.EXE...Application failed to initialize (0xc00000033)ALCMTR.EXE...Application failed to initialize (0xc00000033)I've tried rolling back the driver, uninstalling the driver, etc. Device indicates "it's working properly," yet clearly something is amiss. I've never been alerted that I was missing key system drivers, or that some service needed to be enabled, etc., yet wonder if Registry Mechanic (which I've used a few times in many months) may've screwed something up. I've tried a long list of fixes over about a week, including contacting Sony Support, which was of little help: they simply said to use Last Known Good Config (LKGC) or pick a Restore Point. Swell.(1) As I understand it, LKGC doesn't fix missing or corrupted files, drivers, etc., and don't think one gets to choose that "LKGC" either. It's probably whatever the syste... Read more

(2) Viewing Restore Point choices, I find it doesn't go back beyond Oct. 10, 2007-- three days ago. Restoring to the 10th would NOT correct the problem, and why there are points further back in time is a mystery to me. I turned it off briefly last week, to permanently delete a file I didn't want showing up in a future restore, but it'd been on all the time before that. It won't even let me go back into September, let alone months ago. So, this option appears as useless as tits on a rooster. Background:
I was a happy user of Windows 7. I did the upgrade to Windows 8 and the internet connection seemed to work fine for two days. Then a couple days ago, Windows did the usual software updates after which I shut down my computer. Next time I opened it up (yesterday), it would not connect to the internet no matter what. I am computer savvy so tried all the usual suspects but to no avail. I used the troubleshooting tool which came up with "WiFi does not have a valid IP configuration." Please don't tell me to turn off/on the router. Tried that and it doesn't work. The microsoft forums have been mostly useless as well. I've also tried the following from the command prompt (run as admin):

netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)

netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)"

Then rebooted and still no luck.

I'm inclined to think this may be a compatibility issue, perhaps the drivers. I have a Toshiba Satellite P750. The bottom line is that my computer is now a useless brick and it's costing me money by not being able to get online (for my work).

Below is my ipconfig /all information. I am hopeful that someone may have useful information to solve this problem once and for all. My only other option is to revert back to Windows 7 (which actually does work) and avoid Windows 8 until it becomes a relatively bug free and viable OS. Thanks for your help.

A:Windows 8 Wifi does not have a valid IP configuration

Since we're talking about wifi (wireless networking) I suspect you have a laptop. What I'm thinking is that the driver windows 8 has given you is not happy with your wireless card. More than 1 users suffer from this. Try updating the driver. Though not by the standard way of updating, since its just gonna say it already had the most updated one.
If you have another laptop/computer avaliable, Search for the driver on that one. Remove the previous driver and install a new one. I hope this will work for you.

I then tried resetting TCP/IP

My wife has just bought a new HP laptop with Vista SP1, so I'm learning the hard way how to set it up for her I have a problem with the WiFi configuration.....

My router wireless is set NOT to broadcast its SSID and has WPA encryption set with a long(ish) PSK string. The laptop 'sees' the (unidentified) wireless access point and I can enter the SSID and PSK string manually and connect to it OK - but obviously this has to be done every time I login.

Following the info in Vista Help I have used the 'manually configure a wireless connection' option to create an entry for my SSID - let's call it 'HOME'. This is set to 'connect automatically'. This connects OK when first created, and I can disconnect/reconnect within that login session, but..... whenever the laptop is re-booted the details seem to be lost.

When I log back in I can find no entry for HOME. Attempting to connect to the wireless access point requires me to enter all the details again However if I try to create HOME again manually Vista then says that I have a HOME already !! and creates a HOME 2 instead. Once I finally connect then suddenly the details for both HOME and HOME 2 appear on the list !!! So why does Vista not connect to HOME automatically if it apparently knows about it?

Am I missing something along the way Any advice welcome please!!!

After much thought I recently did a fresh install of my OS everything was working before just wanted a fresh start.
Since I did the fresh install I'm getting wifi doesn't have a valid up configuration and for the life of me I can't seem to figure it out.
This is on a desktop and I can't use a wired connection also I have tried resetting the router. And refreshing windows 8 again. Mind boggled.

It's likely that your machine with the new installation requires a visit to the Windows Update Center in order to install the latest updates which will most likely fix the wireless connection problem.

You really need to connect the first time using a wired connection so as to obtain the updates from Windows.

I was wondering if it was possible to have specific IP configurations for Wifi networks.

For example, when I connect to network "wifi1" I get automatically DHCP address, and when I connect to "wifi2" I get static IP which I defined before.

Is it possible? Really would make my life easier

Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 notebook pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Basic SP1. I found few of my softwares incompatible in it. So I preferred installing Windows XP SP2 removing Vista. I succeeded. I tried installing drivers.

I thought it cud be BIOS configuration problem. But cudn't figure it out.

I'm on a Dell Inspiron 600m notebook computer. I reinstalled windows xp home, and I downloaded a package with all the drivers for this system.

The wireless card is a Broadcom 440x 10\100 integrated controller

I am certain that is the card in the system, and the installation of the driver was successful. However, the wireless network icon in the start bar does not appear.

In the device manager, the broadcom card is listed under "Network Adapters." However, under the "Other Devices" section I found a yellow question mark with an exclamation point next to the words, "Network Controller."

Okay, it's now 13 Sep 2015 and I went around in circles to figure this out. I saw the same issues, to the point of knowing the driver was installed bu tthe Netgear tools never enable the WNDA3100v2, and one cannot manually enable it either. Also tried a USB A6200 device, with the same results. However, I did make this work, and it's kind of simple in my case. I was running the free Zone Labs Firewall & A/V package. And who's A/V package do they use you ask? Kaspersky! Kaspersky has a known issue with allowing proper installation of Netgear USB wireless adapters. So I followed the recommended guidense of a full uninstall of any Netgear WNDA3100v2 and A6200 drivers and software. Then a full uninstall of Zone Labs tools, reboot the computer, then reinstalled the WNDA3100v2 software. Followed the directions, recognition of the USB WiFi adapter was instant. Changed the device setting for being Enabled to auto connect if wired adapter is not connected, and here we are fully functional.Of course now I need to reinstall Zone Labs software, which according to the write up I read at Zome Labs, it should all just work now.Try this method if nothing else seems to work.

Hello

I have a problem that drives me crazy. Randomly, my wifi disconnects many times a day (Limitted conectivity or ), sometimes every 5 minutes. I solve the problem temporarly by:
1.)Running the Troubleshoot of the wifi connection, and it resets the adapter automatically( and at the end of the troubleshotting it says: "WiFi doesnt Have a valid IP configuration, or sometimes The default gateway is not available")
2.)Sometimes the Troubleshooter cant reset the adapter, and I have to do it manually.

By reseting the adapter, the problem is solved only temporarly, because I have to do that mayby 20 times a day, sometimes more, sometimes less.

I use Windows 8 on Asus K55 VJ , Intel Centrino 2230 adapter with up to date driver.

PLEASE, PLEASE help me, the laptop is new, its sold as a Windows 8 engine, and its really embarrassing that I have this problem...

Here are some print screens that can help you

For default gateway problems try typing in the gateway "192.168.10.1" into the IPv4 properties of the wireless network adaptor.

Sometimes windows has problems picking up the gateway from certain routers which is usually just a hardware compatibility problem.

Hi,

I have a relatively new HP Envy (H8-1485ea), with no modifications made, running windows 8. I have had the been using it with a wired connection at university with no problems and on return home connected wirelessly. Initially I encountered no issues, however after about 2 days the status of the connection went to limited and has remained that way since.

On running the windows troubleshooter it stated that the "wifi doesn't have a valid ip configuration".

I searched this forum and found the suggestion to run the commands which resolved similar problems:
netsh winsock reset catalog
netsh int ip reset rest.log hit

However as shown in the attached image for the second command resetting failed. I am not sure if this is where I am going wrong or if there is another issue.

I have also attached my ip configuration.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this problem would be much appreciated, Thanks.

Do you have anything else connecting to the router that actually works (either wired or wirelessly)?
Have you tried power cycling the modem and the router?
Have you tried an ipconfig /release and then an ipconfig /renew after power cycling both?

I just did a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate on my laptop due to many problems...one being that I couldn't open the external hd after I had unplugged it and replugged it in.

After the fresh install of Windows 7, when I open computer menu, it shows the external hd, but has no info about the storage space left on it like the other drives in computer menu, and the green bar at the top loads endlessly.

In Device Manager, it shows up and I updated the drive and it said I already had the latest driver.

When I tried to uninstall through Device Manager, once again, it gets hung up on the uninstall endlessly.

When I go to computer management and click on disk management, there is nothing in the menu, but at the bottom, it says "loading disk configuration information...." endlessly.

Is it because I have a 1.5 tb external hd that's nearly full, and it's just going to take a long time to configure?

Can someone please help me out...I can't lose the files on there.

A:WD External HD hangs up "loading disk configuration information...

Just leave the Disk Management running in the background with your external drive connected to a rear USB port and keep doing other work. (Edit: It just escaped my mind that yours is a laptop. So rear USB port doesn't apply here.)

Sometimes it may take two to three hours to come up and once it comes up, you will have no further problem. ( Its going to be a real problem only if it doesn't come up even after running for three hours.)

Before doing this long run, you may prefer to check the external drive on another computer, if possible.

Edit: Since it is an OEM machine, I am curious to know how you are doing a fresh install - which Windows install media?

Let me start by explaining what led to my problem.

I work for an electric utility, and we issue Panasonic Toughbook laptops to our linemen containing our mobile mapping and AVL (Automatic Vehicle Locating) software. They are all running Windows XP Professional SP3. Our AVL software requires an internet and VPN connection to our AVL server at the office (we currently use Verizon Air Cards and the Cisco VPN client to achieve this). Since implementing this, we have found that Cisco VPN and the Verizon Air Cards do not work well when the wifi network adapters are turned on (or enabled). When they are turned off (disabled) everything works nicely. We can't just disable the wifi NIC's and call it good either because our user's need the faster wifi connections to perform database syncs in the mornings (via hotspots inside each garage bay). Once they are all synced up and out of range of our wireless network, the wifi NIC's are no longer needed. Since the wifi NIC's and Air Cards don't get along, we have been having our users turn the NIC's off using a hardware switch on the Toughbooks cassis. However, some of our older models (CF-29's to be exact) do not have these hardware switches. Our solution was to create two batch files and place them on the users' desktops; one that turns the wifi NIC on, and one that turns it off.

This brings you up to my current problem...

Hi, you could try a system restore. If this fails or is not available try this. Desktop items are stored in a cache, this can become corrupted causing what you see. To fix right click on the taskbar and select Task manager. When Task Manager opens under the Applications tab click on "new Task" type:- explorer.exe press ok. Your desktop should repopulate. At this time reboot your computer. If all is well then the problem is fixed if not:-

Repeat the task manager (as above) and new explorer.exe then follow this:-

Go to Start all programs accessories and right click on command prompt select ?run as administrator?

At the prompt type:- taskkill /im explorer.exe /f press enter
(Your desktop will go blank)

Now type each line and press enter after each line.

Hey all,

I'm having an issue with my computer. Let me provide a little history first. About a month ago, I have Windows 7 installed just fine. Then I decided to move to a pre-release version of Windows 10. Then I formatted my drive and installed Ubuntu Linux. I currently still have Ubuntu Linux, but I want Windows 7 on a dual boot so that I can play games easily and with little need for special configuration through Wine\PlayOnLinux...

Last night I made a usb bootdisk which I confirmed works now from two separate machines. This usb drive will not load up on my PC for some reason though. I've checked my boot settings and I have USB as the first choice, and I've gone as far to remove the harddrive (I have 3) which contains my installation of Linux\Grub. The issue persists, except on the latter when the drive is removed, I simply get a message asking me to insert the boot media and press a button.

I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas for what to try. I tried posting this on Tom's Hardware and the moderator there accepted the first (very incorrect) solution that was posted... That "solution" was stating that I needed to clear out my drive because of Windows 10, but I already did that when I installed Ubuntu. In the past, I had installed all of my operating systems with a USB stick, so I know it works. All of the usb ports work just fine. I'm guessing it must be some wonky setting in my BIOS that's forbidding it, but it's one of those hideous UEFI BIOS... Read more

Okay, so I had just finished installing a brand new 300GB Seagate drive into my old HP Pavilion desktop. Things were working beautifully -- I had formatted the drive, I was able to read and write from it, and I was about to start moving files onto it from a different computer on my network when I realized that I had left out a piece of plastic (the one that directs airflow from the fan to the heatsink) when I resealed the case. So I shut the computer down, unplugged everything, and opened the case again. I reattached the piece and closed up the case, ready to start moving those files.

Unfortunately, upon booting the computer I was faced with 3 words nobody likes to see: "Error Loading OS". I've looked around these forums and nothing seems to apply. This post seemed like it would yield a solution, but I tried what fixed that problem and it didn't work. The really weird thing about my situation is that it WAS working and now it's not. I checked all the cables for connection after this message showed up, and none of them had come loose.

If it matters, I had an 80GB drive with Windows XP installed that I had set as the master/boot drive, with my new 300GB installed as a slave (just extra space). I don't have any Windows XP discs because the OS came pre-installed with this computer (I knew that would come back to bite me some day). What can I do?

Even though I have a good signal everywhere in my house - at least 3 bars but usually 4-5 bars out of 5 - I have found that my internet cuts out repeatedly for at least 10-15 seconds at a time. The other only laptop that connects to this router runs on Vista and has the same problem despite being only 3 feet away from the router itself and the router seemingly never giving any indication that the signal dropped (or at least we can't catch it because it happens before we know it). Sometimes, the signal cuts out multiple times an hour. I constantly see my Yahoo and MSN messengers automatically signing me back in after being cut off for a bit and it gets bothersome with the popping main messenger windows and unrecoverable conversations, in addition to other annoyances.

My router is a refurb Netgear RangeMax Wireless Router WPN824 v3 that I have been using with almost no problem for about 4 months now. Now that I'm back in Chicago, have a new laptop (see link above) and ever since I set up my router, I can't seem to stay connected. Any idea what could be doing this?

I have already tried connecting my laptop to the router via an ethernet cord and everything seems to work perfectly,... Read more

A:Good wifi signal keeps dropping

Wireless interference is the most likely cause of the disconnects. Do you detect any other wireless networks? If so, are any on the same (or close) channel as yours?

If the signal is actually dropping--can't be detected--the router is probably defective. Make sure that is has ventilation and is not overheating.
