Q: been wondering about networking+ windows

i been hearing around on blogs and forums that windows "reserves" 20% of you internets bandwidth for " background" updates. is this true if so what does it fully affect and how do i disable or atleast lower the precent

A: been wondering about networking+ windows

Hello Emmett,

This is really nothing to worry about or needs to be changed.

By default, Windows can reserve up to 20 percent of the network bandwidth for QoS traffic handled by the QoS Packet Scheduler. One hundred percent of the network bandwidth is available to be shared by all programs unless a program (Ex: Windows Update) specifically requests priority bandwidth. This 20 percent reserved bandwidth is still available to other programs unless the requesting program (Ex: VoIP applications) is sending data. Windows can then restrict the best effort traffic to a minimum of 80 percent of the bandwidth to the other programs so that the high priority traffic can be accommodated. If the program that reserved the bandwidth is not sending sufficient data to use it, the unused part of the reserved bandwidth is available for other data flows on the same host.

(same in Windows 7)
QoS Bandwidth Reserve Limit

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I was wondering what type of range I would have betwine my desktop and my laptop if I bought a wireless card for the desktop.

my laptop has a 100ft range(tested my self at up to 140ft).
the desktop card has 100ft range(they sometimes lie so at least 80ft)

my room is 70 ft from my desktop

my real problem is the microsoft network wizerd said that the two computers should be less than 30 feet away from each other.is that just microsoft being stupid or do I need something else

I still use dial up so I cant use a router and im just looking for pc to pc networking(mostly file transfer and some small time gaming )

Have you attempted it yet? As for an alternative, these things work pretty well: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...0892/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-5963271-6972724?ie=UTF8

Hello
Sorry I haven't been around much, but as like everything in life, sometimes get really busy.

I do have a question I would like to ask and have pondered around in here to see if I can find any type of solution.
Site 1 ( ISP A )
Approx 10 computers / on workgroup
All files on one central server we'll call SERVER 1

Site 2 (new one) ( ISP B )
Approx 10 again / on workgroup

this is the question.
Is there any specific programs I can use on Computers on Site 2 to access files on SERVER 1

in other words
is there any way I can setup a security file sharing system between a network A / 1 or B / 2

?
Thanks for any suggestions you may offer.....

Last night, just before bed time, my wife informed me that she had seen, earlier in the day, a message indicating low disk space on our Windows 7 (Home Premium) Laptop. I took a look at the properties on C drive and it was down to about a half GB free space. This was on an 80 GB partition on which Windows is located. I ran Disk Cleanup and there is still only a bit less than 3 GB free space. I took a quick look at the properties of each folder at the root of C drive and found that the C:\Windows folder occupied about 48 GB. Isn't this way too much? Could this be related to Windows 10 to which we never upgraded? I'll look a little further this weekend to see if I can locate the bulk of the files, but I'm guessing I'm going to have to remove some Windows Updates or something, and if so, I'll likely need a little coaching on that.

A:Wondering about reformating Windows NT Server Edtion to Windows 98

Assuming there is no data on the drive you need to save, just boot with the Win98 disk (don't need CD-ROM support, run fdisk and delete the NTFS partition, then create a new partition. You'll reboot to the Boot floppy again (with CD-ROM support this time) then format the disk as FAT32.
Insert the Win98 CD, switch to the drive letter of the CD (usually E if only one hard drive as Ram drive is assigned D) and type setup.

Enjoy

Hello!
I currently have a HP laptop which originally had Windows Vista installed. When I got the laptop it had a few virus' and wasn't starting correctly but I managed to get it running decently well just by going through forums and troubleshooting each step of the way. Then I decided I would install Windows 7, since I go to school and I can get a free (downloaded) copy I figured why not. It worked much better so it seemed like a good decision. It's been just over year that I've been using it in this condition and it's working fine, but it has seemed to be going a bit slower lately. Also, there is no point in Vista still being installed since it is never used, so is there a way to uninstall the Vista without losing any information on my Windows 7 copy? I came across some info about the boot being partitioned to the Vista copy so I don't want to do anything that is irreversible.

Alternatively, I could download another version of Windows 7 and save it somewhere (a removable hard drive?), then completely reformat my hard drive and install that downloaded copy so that i would be starting new. This option sounds better to me if doable. I could possibly acquire a disk, but i believe that option is not free from my school (which isn't as nice, since i'm a broke student).

I'm not quite sure the route I should take, and also what exactly I should do. So what I am asking for is some suggestions on which route would be better, and then possibly the general steps I would need to... Read more

A:Wondering about a new Windows 7 install process (no disk)

Look over these same steps for doing a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
to see how your Win7 install compares. If you're game we can help you get and keep a perfect install.

And if you'll post back a screenshot of Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image we can help you remove Vista if it's still on the drive.

Additionally you can reboot and tap the ESC key for BIOS Boot Menu to select Diagnostics to see if they still run from boot. If so then that would be the only partition you'd want to keep for sure if you're ready to reinstall.

Hello DiBBz,

If there's nothing in there you want to keep, and you don't plan on going back to the previous Windows installation within 30 days if you upgraded from say Windows 7/8, then it's safe to delete.

Hi all,

About a month ago my computer was misbehaving and needed repair, so I went to Best Buy. Long story short, I did not backup my computer to the utmost. When they reinstalled windows, I was bummed but went along my merry way, not even wondering if file recovery after Win Reinstallation was possible. About a month into using the computer, and not finding what I was looking for, I thought 'hey, maybe file recovery is possible. Got EaseUS recovery, and found both Download Metadata and recovered Bookmark files for Google Chrome that are likely to have what I need (just the name of the app or the website I found it on.

Problem is that the recovered files look like they're in Chinese or Korean or similar. At least one is a mixture of what looks like a data, or at least structured info that then peters out into nonsense again. Are these files that just got partially or completely overwritten, or is there some way to turn them into something that Google Chrome can recognize?

I don't actually need the whole files, just having urls or downloaded file names and where they were downloaded from probably would have what I want. Anyone have a problem like this?

Here's an example of text from a Bookmarks file:

Hi.
I am not sure about recovering those files into something workable.
Usually when Windows is reinstalled, you'll have a Windows.old folder in your root drive with all your old data on it. Have you looked for that?

I bought a new laptop 3 years ago when Vista first arrived. I had a number of difficult issues with program compatibility (printer, sound drivers camera programs etc.) and was always searching for drivers to download and had issues with the Windows dirvers. I even had a difficult time getting SP1 to install. (finally had to remove sound drivers that conflicted to get SP1 in and then reinstall them).

I plan to buy a new laptop next year with Windows 7 as mine is slowing down and no room for more Ram I also wanted to wait until after Windows 7 SP1. Meanwhile I just bought a new Cannon Camera (CD says XP and Vista only) and a new printer and I may need some other software.

My question is, am I setting myself up now for big problems later when I buy a Windows 7 Notebook if I am buying things now that do not show Windows 7 ready yet? Will it be all the Vista problems all over again or with Windows 7 is it much easier and smoother to update and run Vista approved software? I even wonder if I should return my camera and wait until the camera's Windows 7 version is out...
Thank you,
G

What do you mean by install all your drives again ? Formating a drive erases all the data that's on it. So if you have any personal/valuable data you'll need to back it up on an external drive or on CD's/DVD's before you format your drive. Once the drive is formated you'll need to reinstall Windows from scratch so make sure you've got an XP install CD or a recovery CD. You must use the CD that came with the laptop, if you got no CD with it then read further. Once Windows is reinstalled you may have to reinstall the drivers for your hardware so it's better to download those drivers in advance on the manufacturer's website and save them to a CD. Usually laptops come with a recovery CD which already has all the drivers included so that step may not be needed. Finally you'll have to reinstall all your programs and copy your personal data back. If you got no install disks when you bought your laptop it probably means that there's some restore or recovery partition on the hard drive. In that case you either have to create the recovery CD's yourself using some software that came preinstalled on the laptop or look for some message at startup telling you which key to press to start the recovery. What's the laptop brand and model ? 4 more replies Answer Match 35.7% I was just wondering if any of the stuff that happens at start up can be removed to make it faster..... A:just wondering

If they are the SAME components, they will run very close.
There is a good chance the Laptop will run hotter, and therefore not quite as well. For the Desktop systems jammed into a laptop case, were you could fry an egg on your lap from all the heat, expect worse results.

I'm not exactly sure where to post this but... two things...

1. i was deleting extra stuff on my computer that take up 100+ mb's and i found a .tmp file called flaB1.tmp.
I googled it and it had a whole bunch of stuff on virus and stuff that had that word on the page. So 1 is it bad? 2 could I delete it? Its taking up 276 mb.

P.S. The file was in my local settings\temp folder.

2. Some folders i have say the stuff in it takes a certain amount of space. I open up the file and lets say what was in it says 200 mb, the two folders inside and all the stuff it shows is 150 mb. What happened to the other 50 mb its taking up? I have show hidden files and stuff on.

P.S. Its just an example, i know 50 mb is not alot. xD

A:Just Wondering...

Cleanup! All Users
Click on the ?Temporary Files? and uncheck the box for ?Scan drives for file matching? if it?s checked.
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

This will delete the files in the temp folder. You can use this program everyday if you want.

I have a friend that lives in Malta Italy and was wondering if anyone might know if it is possible to hook up a PS 2 using the modem in his computer. As their phone lines aren't upgraded enough to connect the PS2 through the phone line.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You

I am new at posting at this site. It appears that I need or should get "hijack this" in case of problems?? Does it really help that much?? Or make it better for you all to help? Just for example. Had a huge problem. My ie started to open with some strange stuff. htpp:/Internet explorer percentenge sign then 20. then explorer.exe. I hit the home page and then it would open. The error message is just most of what I can rember off the top of my head. Ran spyware, antivirus, Never did figure it out. I just reloaded xp and was done with it. Keep all my important programs and such backed up to disk. So let me know if hijack this is that important? Thank you in advance........peace.......im out

A:Just wondering it I need to??

yes it does help. By knowing what is starting up when you turn on your computer. Some programs will come in with e-mail, downloaded programs etc. and run in the background and eat up resources. the hi-jack log will show someone with experience with your operating system what should be there and what is just taking up you resources. As far as reloading your programs, that's fine but when you start running 15 or so it is a real pain. I use that as a last resort.

But before that, since this site was so quick in solving one of my main problems(that didn't have much to do with the printer), I want to see if the unknown problem with my original printer can be solved. Status: Printer: HP DeskJet 612C(yes, it goes <i>that</i> far back) OS: Windows 98 Printer port: LPT1 Currently I don't know what's wrong. Sometime early last year, the cartridges ran out on the printer, so some new ones were acquired(2 black, no color). I got the right ones, and the printer printed fine, but soon after it just wouldn't print. It would set up to put the ink on the paper but after that, the resume light would just blink. I just now reinstalled this old printer thinking that the problems lie in the printer port after all my dealings with the lexmark, and it still has the same problems. The message that comes up when I try to print again is that the printer isn't responding to the data that the computer is sending to it. Any help on this issue would be much appreciated. A:I'm wondering.... I am assuming the problem is with the Lexmark printer. I would try to go to lexmark download center and see if there are any updated drivers for the printer. I know some of the drivers for the all-in-one printers were not correct for the OS. Just wondering: I've recently bought some pc based shooters, and all of them use a combination of keyboard/mouse to play the game. Why don't they offer support for a joystick or a playstation-type controller ?

I can see the logic for offering keyboard/mouse control (every pc has a keyboard and a mouse), but why do the game developers not offer joystick/gamepad as an option ?

A:Just wondering

Some of them do....but I think it's easier to use the keyboard. It offers more controls than a joystick has.

I ran adaware and I ran spybot, which always runs on my computer, and it cleaned up a lot but I know that trojans run files off of the registry and am trying to avoid any problems they may have caused that may not have been detected already. I appreciate your time very much. Thanks in advance.

Hope This Does Not Seem Trivial , Should You Disable System Restore Before Running Ad-aware And Spy-bot..? I Seem To Have The The Same "hits "when I Do Run Them.
Thanks For Any Replies...

Does it really matter if I delete 'O8' files since i don't use them, at all.... I mean, it's not gonna ruin anything right, as far as i'm concerned it shouldn't do anything harmful other than getting rid of all the just stored in Internet Explorer.
These ones:
------------------------
O8 - Extra context menu item: E&xport to Microsoft Excel - res://C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\Office10\EXCEL.EXE/3000
O8 - Extra context menu item: Easy-WebPrint High Speed Print - res://C:\Program Files\Canon\Easy-WebPrint\Resource.dll/RC_HSPrint.html
O8 - Extra context menu item: Easy-WebPrint Preview - res://C:\Program Files\Canon\Easy-WebPrint\Resource.dll/RC_Preview.html

Yes you can get rid of those without fear.

go into my computer to check and pull up someone's transcripts of their chat sessions. Here's why I am asking. My dil went into my son's computer, pulled up and read every chat session he had for a particular day. He chat's with a lot of people but she called me over to their house last night to show me a chat session he had with a particular woman, who it turns out is his second cousin, who is also deaf, so they chat on-line. The whole transcript, if that is what it is called was right their on monitor in living color. First of all, I do not believe in invading someone's privacy, nor going and looking for trouble but apparently Miss Nosey Rosey does. She is not computer literate so someone at work had to tell her how to do this. Does anyone know what I am talking about? If one of you does, please tell me because I thought that when you ending a chat session it was over and out.

Witchey

A:I was just wondering how to......

Many Instant Message applications (here, I assume that is what you mean by chat session) will allow you to elect to store recent transcripts. MSN messenger (latest version), for example, allows this option.

Tools/Options/Messages
Under message history, you may check/uncheck:
. "automatically keep a history of my conversations,"
. "show my last conversation in new conversation windows"
And designate what folder to use to save recent conversations.

I certainly agree that reading personal conversations is akin to opening another's personal letters. Changing these options will prevent others from reading chat transcripts.

John

does anyone know if malwarebytes has ever caused an issue with windows 8 os. my laptop has some serious funny glitches to it and I literally have not installed anything but malwarebytes. it's a pretty excellent program that I have on all my systems. and even another laptop with windows 8 that has no issues.

A:Just wondering

What are the glitches?Have you tried uninstalling Malwarebytes to see if problems go away?

Hi everyone. I've been running Windows 7 Professional (RTM) for about two months now. My current security setup has been OK so far, but I'm thinking I'd like to harden it up a bit with some prevention measures. I'm also rather ignorant when it comes to most security measures, so please have patience with me.

I'm wondering about setting up an SRP to stop malware in the event that it ever manages to weasel through, or I get hit with a day-0. I'll admit that I use my computer mostly for webbrowsing, communication, and (overwhelmingly) gaming. An SRP sounds like a really nice security feature, but I fear I may not have the know-how to set it up, or even the know-how to understand if it's right for me.

The problem is that some of the tools to make SRP easier to use aren't available in Win 7 professional. From what I've seen PGS from wilder's security forums is incompatible with Windows 7, and on top of that SRP has been redesigned into the Applocker - which isn't in Professional.

Is SRP still something that I could set up on my machine? If it is, I gather I would have to set up a whitelist for every program that needs to run. My concern is that there are lots of programs that run other programs that I know nothing about in order to operate correctly. For example, launching update modules.

I suppose that's a longwinded way of saying, is it possible to set up an SRP on a Windows 7 Professional machine, and if so, where can I learn how to set up such a policy without co... Read more

Also Nvidia GeForce GTX 1000 series graphics cards will support Windows 10 better right?
I'm waiting on new hardware because I'm planning a new AMD Zen build.
Just wondering if all this new tech will run Windows 10 faster...

Ok, i have a new pc with a 120 gb ssd and a 2 tb 7200 rpm hd, (my os is on the ssd btw)
so i have partitioned my 2tb into 2 1tb partitions.

so how would i make that second tb into a dual-boot windows 7.

would be appreciated if i could be direct to a how to or video.

to go over it again i want to be able to start up my pc and see windows 7 and windows 7 (2) computer on a dual-boot option.

A:Just wondering Something

Hello RvB, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You could use the same steps in the tutorial below to setup a dual boot with two Windows 7. You would just substitute Vista with Windows 7 in the tutorial instead.

Dual Boot Installation with Windows 7 and Vista

Hope this helps,

I bought new laptop - Asus ROG G750JM and while the thing is full of speedy stuff the hard drive is dreadfully slow (5400rpm). Now I have a Samsung 256GB EVO here with spare 7 OEM and I am wondering if I could take out the 8.1 hard drive install the EVO and put the 7 OEM on it and not lose the 8.1 activation on the machine?

My concern is if by any chance (very slim) I want the 8.1 back can I just reverse the drives and use the system on it.After all the OEM's are tied to the same motherboard??

A:Just wondering

Windows 8 Factory OEM in activated in the BIOS, unless yours has a COA sticker which is unlikely. So you would always be able to put the old HD back in, run Factory Recovery, or do the superior Clean Install - Windows 8 to self-activate from the BIOS.

To run Win7 requires turning off Secure Boot in BIOS setup as shown in Downgrade Windows 8 to Windows 7. Then you'd boot the Win7 installer as a UEFI device, delete all partitions during install so the it can reset if necessary to a GPT disk, format and install Win7.

If you're asking if you can start up an existing Win7 on that PC it might be difficult. If it's an MBR install (has System Active boot partition) then you'd need to adjust the BIOS to enable CSM or Legacy BIOS. But it will still likely need to Adjust Win7 to boot on new hardware with Paragon Adaptive Restore CD. There is a newer version of the Adaptive Restore on the latest Paragon Rescue Kit Free Edition which may even be able to adjust an EFI install on GPT disk if that's what you have.

If you do a Clean Install Windows 7 I'd wait for the full 30 days to activate so you know for sure you want to use an OEM license on that PC, since technically you cannot move the license once it activates on that mobo.
