Get router attached devices info

Q: Get router attached devices info

I use Fing for Android which shows me a bunch of info for connected devices on the router including their IP address and name, but sometimes it's not enough and I'm looking for a Windows 7 tool that does the same thing. Is there something I'm missing in Control Panel or command line or do I need to install a third-party tool?

A: Get router attached devices info

I don't know that Windows itself has that info, but if you log into the router itself (run ipconfig /all in command prompt, and use the default gateway as the address in a web browser) - this should give you what you are looking for.

I have a Vista business operating system. I have three external hard drives and a printer (2 usb and 2 firewire). The problem started a while ago. I had to disconnect one of the hard drives to boot the machine, otherwise I got the blue screen that said it was a fatal error with a '0x0000007f'. Then it was all three hard drives. Last night I had to power off the printer and the hd's inorder to boot. The system will boot fine in safe mode but not in windows mode and all devices work fine if connected after the system is up. I've run memory checks, virus scans, tried to fix windows, and even ran regcure. I am not sure if this is hardware or software. Any ideas would be appreciated.

A:BSOD with attached devices.

Did you ever try a "system restore" to a date prior to the problem?

And since you have the business edition, have you ever performed a full drive backup?

The error suggests an undelying hardware problem -- >

If there is a software problem with an installed program -- you can try to clean boot it to sort it out:

You might try reloading the BIOS defaults -- or resetting the CMOS at the motherboard level. The latter usually involves a jumper near the battery but can also be accomplished by removing the battery for a couple of minutes.

I have a Dell Dimension L866r computer.

Today, I got on it and the keyboard wouldn't work. So, I checked the USB port to see if it was loose, but after I re-plugged the keyboard in, I got this message:

"One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance, click this message"

...obviously troubleshooting is no help.

I went into Device Manager and went under my USB options and these are listed:

Intel(R) 82801AA USB
Universal Host Controller
Unknown Device
USB Root Hub

I am on my friends computer now, but am without a PC at home due to the lack of keyboard functions. Does anyone know what I should do or have any suggestions? PLEASE HELP! Thanks So Much!!!

If you need any further information, please let me know! I am so grateful for any help!

I have an Advent usb splitter with 4 ports which is connected to a usb port on my PC. When i start up windows 8.1, typically, I'll have a mouse & 1 external drive connected & my 2 printers connected to the usb splitter although the printers themselves may not be switched on. During my login session, I might switch one or both printers. Everything is running ok & I can print ok.

However, on a few occasions I've started my laptop with only the mouse & external drive connected. If I then plug in one of my printers, I've found that the mouse & external drive have become disconnected. Despite the (obvious) fiddling around with all of the usb connections in case one they've become unplugged, my devices remain unconnected. Why is this? Up till now, I've powered off my PC & re-started it. All devices connected via Advent usb splitter now work.

Hi Folks,

I submitted this yesterday but haven't heard back. I wanted to "bump" this and also add the log when I ran the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware software.

In advance I thank you for your help.

My original issues below still happen periodically and now on occasion it appears as thought my default home page which is Google won't load in Firefox. Also - as indicated below the AVG system will sometimes not load and it says that the "avg.exe... can't load because of the worm32 virus. The only thing that has not happened since i ran the Malwarebytes package is the "windows security" shield does not pop up with threat warnings.

My problem is that 2 days ago I believe I was "hijacked" Specifically, after I log in and start up -things will be going fine - then a pop up with a shield that says "Windows Security" tells me I have treats - lists them in red and tells me to register / purchase to have them fixed. During this time my PC cannot access the internet or system restore etc.. and my Free Edition of AVG 2011 is disabled. Anytime I try to launch I am told the "avg.exe..." cannot open because it is infected with a Worm32 virus. This is my issue. I also notice that occasionally the system tells me my "host processes for windows services has stopped" .

I was able to find temporary relief by starting in safe mode - restoring to an earlier time and then posting here. Twice the bug/virus warn... Read more

I bought a new desktop with the following spec:

AMD Radeon 6950 2GB
2 * [2x2GB G.Skill Ripjaws Edition Dual Channel CL7-8-7-24‎] - 8GB of RAM
GIGABYTE P67A-UD3-B3 Motherboard
i7-2600K sandy bridge processor
‏Caviar Black 640GB 7200RPM, 32MB, SATA II WD6401AALS‎

I ran every kind of test (memtest86+ for 30 hours , memtest, bootsect, chkdsc.. of windows and lots of tests passed), even the verifier.exe , it was reporting gdrv.sys error but I got over it and now it doesn't recognize any driver error on startup.

I am running on Windows 7 64bit.

* I deleted GIGABYTE tools (enegy saver + et6) and I don't get gdrv.sys related BSODs anymore.

* I deleted AVG anti virus as a realized there was a bsod related to it and installed Microsoft Security Essentials instead.

* I updated all files for WINDOWS UPDATE.

****** ALL OF THE REMAINED BSODS ARE RELATED TO "ntoskrnl.exe" as you can see at the bottom of the comment.

p.s: I was told to delete catalyst 11.5 (that seemed to be corrupted, it was always crashing.. like other programs) and I did, but still I am getting the same errors.

# I used Driver Genius 10 in order to update my drivers also!

I paid lots of money and not enjoying my computer.. got any solution? maybe BIOS settings? or whatever? I am not that good in determining BIOS settings, although am not sure its the problem.

A few days ago, I was playing Oblivion IV when all of a sudden, my monitor shut off. So, I tried to turn it back on, but I realized that the monitor was on the whole time, but it just has an orange light instead of a blue one. This means that the monitor is receiving a signal, but the computer is asleep. However, I am very sure the computer did not go to sleep.

The same happened with my speakers. They stayed on, as they were still getting power, but they did not play any sound.

When I reset the computer, these problems persisted.

I opened the computer and cleaned out all the dust, but this had no effect.

Here is my system information:

Windows XP Professional SP3

Acer Aspire 1200
ATI Radeon X1300
AMD Athelon 64

I currently have no internet.

Yikes! Sorry to say it sounds like that usb stick is dead :dead:

1. It happens on every computers AND
2. Code 43

Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
3. Windows has generic drivers that support a USB memory stick (when it works )

. . . and windows does not support it. I get this error when I try to plug a flashdrive into an old Dell Latitude. The USB port works when I connect it to a cooling pad with a usb powered fan. I've also used the USB port to charge iPods and other devices. When I use the USB port for a flash drive or similar device I receive the error message. I have tried going into device manager and uninstalling it and re-booting multiple times. I have also unplugged the power and battery and left it off for a few minutes as many times. Once, I was able to get it to work, and quickly moved over some files, but it stopped working once I unplugged it. I've searched the internet and other forums for a few days now, and haven't found anything that works. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

A:One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned . . .

The power for the port may work but not the data transfer. Does the port work with a keyboard or USB mouse? Have you run the Dell diagnostic software (available at if you don't have it on disk)?

Also, please post the make and model number of your Dell and the version of Windows it uses so the techs here can have more info to work with.

I'm not one to usually post to forums for assistance, but this one has be baffled and I want to get some input before I dump more money into this.

I have an issue with the USB on my computer in that devices attached to it do not stay work properly after any substantial amount of data has been passed through them. The problem is most prevailent with my Tenda wireless network adapter. When it is plugged in it is recognized correctly and can connect to my secure wireless network without issue. When I Ping out of the wireless adapter to the router it connects to there are no issues but when I try and go to a website in my web browser the ping dies. The connector still shows that it is connected, but cannot refresh the IP it still thinks it has or in any way speak with the router. The only solution I've found thus far is to unplug the wireless card and plug it back in.

I thought this issue was with my wireless card so I exchanged it as I had just purchased it. No luck, same issue. This isn't only linked with the wireless card, though. When I try to print to my Kodak ESP 5 All-in-One printer the pages will start but then the data will stop flowing while the computer and printer think they are both fully functional. But it's not so simple, here's where it get strange. When I plug in my Motorola Milestone Android phone and run the tethering software I can fully browse the web and download anything I need (that's how I'm posting this). Also, it... Read more

We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

If you are overclocking STOP

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
* Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
* OK your way out.
* Reboot if changes have been made.

Im having a problem with the USB error bubble popping up constantly.. Sometimes i will get an hour or two without the bubble coming up.. but usually it pops up bout every 2-5 seconds.. As you could probably guess this is interferring with how my computer is operating.. It freezes up alot but it will resume after the freeze.. If i restart sometimes that will help a little by cutting down how many times the bubble comes up.. I dont have anything plugged into the USBs But i do have a modem connected by ethernet.. The error bubbles say USB device unrecognized after clicking on it it shows one unknown device.. I have tried powering down and shutting off the power strip.. And unistalling all devices and rebooting.. I havent tried updating my BIOS, repairing my OS install, or installing motherboard chip sets cause i dont have a clear idea of how to do that.. All of the USB ports dont work an the devices do work on another computer..

Presenting problem: Dreadfully slow system, windows either never load or an error message of some kind pops up saying there was a problem. Was barely able to dl HJT but finally after two days was able to and the log is below. Ran into problems with the DDS and other utilities that were supposed to be included. A runtime error message popped up along with the following line included in the DDS instructions. Right after it says "We only require it to run just once. Dispose after use." it says, "The system cannot execute the specified program." For the record, the runtime error says Runtime Visual C++ Runtime library almost after every window closes, when I am able to get them to close. One time it had error code 1603

Checked windows updates and all are up to date. There is plenty of space on the hard drive so the slowness is not because of a crowded drive. Please advise.

my machine is infected with something.
symptoms are:
-running slower than normal
-when i click on web sites i've searched for to get help, what opens is something entirely different (usually some ad site)
-random blue screen shutdowns
-Ad-Aware no longer runs
-sometimes won't boot into normal mode, but will successfully boot into safe-mode
there were other additional symptoms which seemed to stop after i ran AntiMalware. It found and removed quite a bit of stuff but now says the system is clean.
i have run the tools requested on the new poster's page. files are included and attached as requested.

I can't take it anymore! I've been dealing with this problem for a year or two now.. Basically had this problem since I had this PC and I should of returned it when I first got it but as I need my PC for school and work I really had no option to go without a PC. Anyway my PC crashes several times a day and its very frustrating. It seems to crash from a lot of things but nothing that really does it specifically every time. I play League of Legends and when you are using its desktop UI it will crash during champion select scree but while running the game it RARELY crashes. It's odd. I go to get  a drink and my pc is idling, and I come back to a BSOD. I let something DL over night and it crashes. I play games on full settings and it works fine for hours on end. I browse on chrome and scroll around for a little and it crashes. I haven't kept track of all the error codes but I see a lot of "A clock time Interrupt was not recieved', also "irql_not_less_or_equal" and some others that I get randomly.
See attached info.

Hi, I built my own PC but unfortunately I'm experiencing BSOD's on an almost daily basis.

Please note, I had not used this PC for over 15 months due to moving abroad. I have since moved back and I now remember the problems I was having. That is why there is a 15 month gap in dump files / crashes.

I have attached the dmp log using BlueScreenView program.

The BSOD's appear to be random and different each time. There is no one thing that keeps causing the crashes.

I have no clue and would appreciate the advice.

Thank you.

I mostly get this error code while doing things such as playing games: starcraft 2, rift, WoW, css, and now BF3 beta. The occurances are very random and mostly happen when I am playing a game, sometimes I am not playing a game and it happens. Also sometimes it doesn't even BSoD it just randomly reboots out of no where. Every single BSoD is the same 0x00000124 stop code.

I originally tried reformatting and that obviously didn't do nothing. I've updated my video card drivers. Last night when I started playing the BF3 beta its been worse than ever, almost every single round I would almost be guarunteed a BSoD or a random reboot out of no where.

I attached all the info requested for the BSoD threads as well as a zip of 3 of the dmp's from last night but I think one of the requested files has all of the dmps, please help me!!!

I noticed it said two device drivers are not installed on the system health report. I am using wireless so the ethernet controller wouldn't be being used I dont think.

I have a red x on internet icon although I am connected. On trying to map the network to see where is the problem I get error message saying cannot complete the mapping.
There is nothing wrong in device manager and nothing when I run the network trouble-shooters.
That is the extent of my knowledge.
The event viewer is confusing to me.
When I run the network event manager I have many many errors and warnings! I don't know what to do now. Can anyone else with more knowledge advise me what is happening please?
I have saved the event log if anyone is willing to look at it for me. Unfortunately when I tried to attach it, it says it is an invalid format (evtx). How is best to send please?
I attach everything else that is required about my IP Configuration.
I have wireless router and I am only one on my network.
Many thanks

Hi folks,

My sister's computer has a problem that's got me stumped. I don't know how long it's been going on, because I've only just come over for a visit, and wound up giving the local PCs and LAN a checkup. Here's the problem, when I check for attached devices in the wireless router's UI, all of them show up as they should, except for my sister's. Hers reports a pseudo-random computer name instead of the real one. Let me clear about this: Every time I refresh the attached devices list, it spits out another pseudo-random computer name. I say pseudo-random, because the names appear to be drawn from some list, and occasionally reoccur, but there is no particular pattern to it. I tried to search for a file that contains some of these names, but failed to find one.

Let me also make this clear: Nothing is actually changing the computer name, it's just getting spoofed on the network. My Netgear router shows her MAC and IP addresses correctly, and only shows the computer/device name as the spoof. However, when i use nbtstat -A to check, it shows that her MAC address is also being spoofed, and it's just not fooling the router.

I've done a complete system scan with AVG 8, SpyBot S&D, Adaware and MS Windows Defender for what it's worth. It picked up a few minor things like tracking cookies, but nothing serious. I was actually surprised at how clean the system was. Anyway, I tried booting in safe mode, with networking, and found th... Read more

My Win 7 SP1/64 Dell desktop system takes up to 4 or even 5 minutes to boot up. Doing a "clean boot" it still takes almost 3 minutes.

This has been going on a while, so I reinstalled Windows 7 SP1 and installed all the updates. It only seemed to make it worse.

I use Security Essentials, and it claims there are no viruses/malware. I've run MalwareBytes and it too says the system is clean.

Doing some research, I learned about the Event Viewer, so I ran it and got nothing but warnings of degradation and critical errors. In the non-clean boot, PreShellInit seems to be the worst culprit. In the clean boot, it is one of several degrading processes.

Below are the Event Viewer errors for the clean boot. Any help and suggestions on how to fix this are much appreciated.

Hi, If someone could help I would be very grateful. Weeks ago I found picture and jpeg files in my folder that would not delete with any attempts until I used a program I found recommended somewhere...I forget what it was, but it was a program that deletes files that wont budge. Anyway, whenever I go into my User folder a Windows Live ID logon thing comes up... It only started when those files turned up. Is this a bad thing? I have been reading other threads for people with a similar problem but no luck so far. I have used HJT and used the site but nothing was found so nothing has changed.

Once again, it would be great to get some help.

Hi guys,

I've lately been getting very frequent blue screens. They've been occurring for a while but until the last few days they've been rare. Now they are happening every few hours randomly and can be triggered 100% after I spend 10 minutes in Photoshop.

Looking at the minidumps in BlueScreenView I can see ntoskrnl.exe in every entry and most crashes are either error 0x0000003b or 0x1000007e.

PC is 6 months old, the Windows install is 4 months old. I had to reinstall windows due to an issue with my SSD which caused my PC not to boot. It was due to a known issue with Vertex 2 drives, which could be part of the problem.

I will be running Memtest86+ overnight to test for errors.

System Specs:
Windows 7 Ultimate x64, full retail
Intel Core i5 2500K
Asus P8Z68-V Pro
G.SKILL Ripjaws 8GB DDR3-1600
Nvidia Geforce GTX 460 1GB
Asus Xonar DG Soundcard
WD Caviar Green 2TB HDD
Corsair Professional HX650W PSU

Any help is much appreciated.

SSD's have been problematic recently. We've seen numerous BSOD's due to them. Here's the info that I have so far:

There's not a whole bunch available to test SSD's. The "easiest" test is to remove the SSD, install a platter-based hard drive, install Windows and test for stability that way.

Here's some suggestions:
- Update the SSD's firmware to the latest available version (VERY IMPORTANT!!!)
- Slow the memory (RAM) down to the next slower speed (I've only seen one person who claimed that this worked for them).
- Use any manufacturer's utilities that you may have. If you don't have any, then try this free one (I haven't used it myself): Crystal Dew World
- Update chipset and storage controller drivers to the latest available from the manufacturer of the device (not the manufacturer of the motherboard). Be sure to update ALL controllers on the motherboard!
....NOTE: Recently (Nov 2011) we had BSOD issues with the Marvell 91xx controller and an SSD. You may have to switch controllers also.-
Replace the SSD with a platter based hard drive and see if that stops the BSOD's. If it does, then it's likely that there's a problem with the SSD OR an incompatibility with your system.
It's my opinion that SSD's aren't reliable enough (with current hardware) to be used on a system that needs to work reliably. Until I see reliability I will not recommend, nor will I use, SSD's for critical applications.

Hey everyone I'm facing a peculiar problem with my computer; it's in Devices & Printers. I remember I used to have a fancy image of my computer displayed, but now it doesn't anymore and it doesn't have my correct model listed either
Attachment 310183
As you can see, my printer and Logitech receiver have the right icons and info. I think it may have something to do with the fact that I'm using a different hard drive to the one that came with the laptop. I'm also not using the OEM version of W7 anymore, from Toshiba. I used to be able to click on my computer's fancy icon where it'd bring up a sub-menu, with different options. That's how it is when I click on my printer anyway, lol.

Recently, my computer has decided to show the BSOD everytime I watch videos and play games. I only play LOTR ROTWK on my computer and as it is pretty old it shouldn't really be putting strain on my computer.

My computer was custom built around 2006 and i have attached the diagnostics file with all the hardware info. I have tried updating all my drivers with driver genius but i still get the BSOD. The one I'm getting now is the ntkrnlmp.exe and before that I was getting a c-media ac97 BSOD which was rectified by updating my Asus xonar dg sound card driver.

EDIT: I just was playing and got this error:

I'm in the market for a new wireless router, my pc usage is mostly gaming, surfing, and backing up files. Purpose of the router being for access from xbox and a laptop. I'm going to be setting up a second computer soon and know absolutely NOTHING about setting it up. I know I will need a router...preferably wireless as hubby doesn't want wires running all over the computer room. So firstly, besides a router is there anything else I need or does buying a router include all parts to hook up an add'l system.

Secondly, what is a decent, inexpensive router that I can pick up at maybe Staples??? Nothing fancy, nothing with too many bells & whistles. I'm in the middle of the woods so security isn't a HUGE issue although some would be nice if available.

I have My PC (Win7) with Netgear WGR614v7 connected by Wired LAN to Topfield 7100 Pvr and Laptop (XP Pro). My main concern is the Topfield Pvr which must download programs from IceTV Interactive for Recording. After setting it up as DHCP (reccommended by both Ice TV and Topfield) and Pinging both ways to prove connection, I logged into the Router to check Network Status. The Topfield was displayed in the Attached Devices Page of the Router. Satisfied that all was setup OK, I logged out of the Router. Later in the day, I again logged into the Router to again check the Status of the Network. I am of the belief, that once Devices are Setup, Remain Connected. Remain ON and are available for Communication (proven by Pinging), they should at all times be visible in the Attached Devices Page of the Router.
As I am not familiar with how the Router maintains its contact with Devices, I am at a loss to understand if my belief is correct or what may be the cause of my apparrent problem.

Is the printer connected wirelessly? If so then you'll need to re-configure the printer as it may be looking for the wrong SSID. Also, try re-installing the printer software on the 2 un-connected machines and see if you can re-establish a connection.

I store all of my media files (photos, music, etc.) on an external hard drive attached via usb to my router. This way, the files are accessible to all the computers on my home network. My problem is that I can't figure out how to back up this drive.

I have mapped the network drive, and it is visible and accessible via Windows Explorer. However, neither the Windows Backup software nor the backup software that came with my WD My Passport drive (which is attached to my desktop via usb and is the one I back up to), show the drive in the list of drives displayed when selecting files to back up.

It seems that this would be a fairly common configuration and therefore there must be a solution, but I sure can't figure out what it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I currently have two computers sharing a Wireless home LaserJet printer and they are working/printing just fine because (I assume) when the printer was installed it asked for the printers IP address, SSID (aka Network Name) and the WEP or WPI Passphrase (aka the routers password onto the network).

That said, I am going to be changing the wireless router (provided by the new ISP so I don't know the specs on that router yet). I assume that after the new router is installed it will have a new SSID and a different Passphrase, so if I were to try and print the printer would not be able to find the network information because the SSID and Passphrase have changed.

My question is this:
If I login into the new router, is there somewhere on those screens to provide the new SSID and Passphrase or how would I get the new info made available to the printer? Hoping I don't have to reinstall the printer again as all the drivers are already on the two computers so I'm thinking/hoping I just have to input the new network information to the printer so it will find the network - any logic to my thinking on this?

The printer is 3 1/2 years old so I can't get any tech support with HP on it.

The printer is a model: HP LaserJet P1102w

I am new to routers and networks. Is one brand of router better than another? I want to stream Netflix movie to laptop while desktop is being used to surf the Internet. If two computers are liked in one household to a wireless router, is it possible to see, if you log in through the router, all the websites that those computers have visited? Kind of like a history?

A:Retrieving info from router?

If your router has that kind of logging capability, yes. But depending on the traffic being generated on your network, it may or may not be able to keep a long history of website hits as the buffer memory on most routers is relatively limited.

Both my DSL modem router and a wireless surveillance system (cameras and receiver) use the 2.4 GHz frequency; of course, one inactivates the other.
Does anyone know a DSL modem router operating in another frequebcy range (fixed or adjustable)?

A:2.4 GHz for modem router and other wireless devices?

802.11a WiFi standard uses the ~5GHz frequency. These devices are considered enterprise class though and cost more than your normal wireless.

Have you tried changing the channel on your current WiFi gear? Changing it from 1 to 13 for example may be enough to make both your systems fit into the band.

A friend currently has a Belkin wireless G router and uses a D-Link DGL-3420 gaming adapter to connect her XBox 360 to her wireless network. This configuration works fine but she did have an issue where the connection was lost and the troubleshooting tool on the Xbox 360 recommended using an 802.11a connection to avoid possible interference problems. Apparently, the wireless Xbox 360 controller she uses broadcasts at 2.4GHz, just like 802.11g.

So, I'm looking at replacing her Belkin router with one that supports 802.11a. I see 802.11n wireless routers should support 802.11a/b/g devices but I was wondering if anyone here had any "real world" experience with connecting to a 802.11n wireless router using 802.11a.

Did it work for you? Have any problems?

A:Anyone have experience with 802.11a devices and a 802.11n wireless router?

Basically, what's happened is that after transferring my old PC's data onto my new one, and putting that one in place of my old one, therefore hooking up my modem to it, my wireless devices have been having trouble connecting to the router. Everything's hooked up fine, and it was working perfectly before, but now my devices such as my laptop and Droid Pro can SEE the router (As in connect to it and say that they are getting excellent signal strength), but when I try to open my browser, it asks as if I'm not connected to anything at all. The PC that's wired to the modem through the router works fine, however.

I have a Cisco Linksys E1200 router. Three computers are wired to it while my laptop connects to it wirelessly. When I look at the network topology (Network and Sharing Center->See full map), it shows that my laptop is connected to E1200 (this one has the same name as the router but different icon. The icon has an antenna. Thus, I think it is some kind of wireless device) which is connected to a switch, then a hub, then to the E1200.

Why are there three devices between the wireless router and my laptop?

A:Why so many devices between my laptop and the wireless router?

Just a quick guess....

Is one of the "wired" computers set to use Internet Connection Sharing? My dad (80 y.o. and still buying the latest hardware) did that once in the XP days and had an issue similar to yours. He never lost connectivity, but took the long way to get there. Found the issue doing a traceroute.

I have a Linksys RT31P2 router which seems to be acting funny. What happens is it randomly seems to assign my pc different IP addresses. I have it set to hand out a max of 50 addresses (100 - 149) and my pc has always been .100, but for some reason yesterday it assigned it .134. It's really annoying because several of my programs need ports forwarded to work and having to change them in my router is tedious and unnecessary. Anyone know why this is happening?

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

So I have had the same router for years now (Belkin f5d7623-4) and whilst its had its problems over the years its generally been okay. On my home network I have my Sony Vaio and my Asus, a ps3, both my iphone 4 and 5, my samsung tv, as well as my mum's acer netbook and her galaxy s3.

My iphone 4 is a few years old now and has for some time struggled to consistently connect and stay connected to the wifi, my asus had some problems but they were hardware related and I fixed them a couple of months ago. The acer netbook had been connecting to the wifi fine since my mum was given it when a few months ago it suddenly wouldnt connect and no matter what I did to the settings of the laptop or router it could not be solved, as my mum is not heavily reliant on technology we got her a long ethernet cable as a short-term fix. A few weeks later I wanted to use the internet functions of my samsung tv so I took the cable from the netbook as my mum wasnt there at the time. When my mum returned she complained about me having taken the cable but then found her netbook was working over the wifi again, since then it has stopped working with the wifi again. My vaio and ps3 have never suffered problems before and my 5 has only began to struggle since being water damaged.

Thanks for viewing my post.

I have a Netgear, apparently "wired" wireless router that connects to my laptop via an ethernet line. It runs off of a cable modem, which connects into the Netgear router, then the ethernet line goes into my laptop. I have a desktop with the wireless card that runs off of this connection, which has been functioning fine.

I had no idea that the router had to be "wired" to my computer via the ethernet cord - I figured wireless was wireless - so that was disappionted. Oh, and the laptop does have a wireless card. I had to disconnect the ethernet cable to take my laptop to work, and when I try to reconnect the laptop to the wireless router, I am unable to find any networks. I have not been able to access other wireless networks at other locations, and my wireless connection screen comes up with the "windows cannot configure this wireless connection..."

So, basically, why is the laptop recognizing the network, while the computer the router is connected to is not?

Thanks, help is greatly appreciated.

I have an SMC 7004VWBR wireless router. I connect two PCs (W98 and XP Home) via wireless adapters. I know how to find the MAC addresses for the adapters (ipconfig/all). When I login to the router it presents a status page with 3 MAC addresses;
I notice that the value for WAN MAC Addr is the same as my XP Home PC's wireless adapter. The other two are the same value, but what do these values represent? Why is the WAN MAC Addr = to my XP's wireless adapter MAC addr?
I have DHCP enabled and each PC's adapters are set to Obtain ip address automatically. The router's status also displays the ip address and MAC of those adapters connected. Mine only shows the XP pc but not the W98 pc, however, the W98 pc is connected to the router and can access the internet. Don't understand this.
Thanks for any explanations.

A:Help understanding router's status info

MAC address-
Short for Media Access Control address, a hardware address that uniquely identifies each node of a network. In IEEE 802 networks, the Data Link Control (DLC) layer of the OSI Reference Model is divided into two sublayers: the Logical Link Control (LLC) layer and the Media Access Control (MAC) layer. The MAC layer interfaces directly with the network medium. Consequently, each different type of network medium requires a different MAC layer.

Local Area Network. A computer network that spans a relatively small area. Most LANs are confined to a single building or group of buildings. However, one LAN can be connected to other LANs over any distance via telephone lines and radio waves. A system of LANs connected in this way is called a wide-area network (WAN).

Acronym for wireless local-area network. Also referred to as LAWN. A type of local-area network that uses high-frequency radio waves rather than wires to communicate between nodes.

Why is your wireless NIC's MAC address = WAN MAC address? Because some ISP requires you to register your MAC address with them. Therefore your wireless router clones it.

A:Need info on connecting XBox through router

I am not using the wireless option because my son's xBox does not have wireless access capability. What I did was this: (1) I got an ethernet cable that is long enough to connect from the router to the xBox. (2) connect the ethernet cable to the router and the xBox. My son turned on the xBox and voila he had internet connection. Try it and see if it works. And you have to buy that xBox Live package which gives you access to xBox Live (you have to enter your credit card number and they will charge you every year).

So I'm thinking my router is going bad, but I want to try a firmware upgrade before buying a new one. When I go to the netgear download site, it gives me instructions for installing the new firmware and among those instructions is:

Write down all settings that you entered when previously configuring. (Usually this includes information such as ISP configuration and wireless security settings.)

I actually have no idea what those settings are because A) it was years ago, and B) someone else did it. How do I find out these settings and get the new firmware to work properly?

A:Upgrading router firmware and don't know info

i have always had netgear routers for wireless. i have mine plugged into a modem. if the router is really old u might be better off with a new one as they are a lot faster. my first one was 11mbs. my new one is 54mbs.if u decide to buy a new one just unplug the one wire from the computer and leave the rest plugged in and shut off the computer and modem and router and shut off the surge protector if its plugged into one. when u get the new router put the plug in that u saved from the old router that went into the computer and turn on the computer. then turn on your modem, then turn on the router. the instructions usually give u the correct order and im going from memory.if its done right u wont even need the install disk as it should find the router automatically.and u should have an internet.then if u want to have a password u can go to the website and add one. hope this helps u.

So I have a TP-LINK TL-WR841ND 300Mbps router and the basic problem is, that it repeatedly drops the internet connection and also the devices connected to it. But the my main computer, which is wired to the router has never had any problem, even at the time, when the wireless doesn't work. I use many os like win7, ios 5.1.1 on iPad 3rd, a samsung smart tv and a samsung smartphone with android. But as I mentioned it only happens with wireless, never with the wired computer. When the problem occurs there is no device, which can connect to the internet and to the router, except the wired one.

I've tried all of the encryptions and security methods, at the moment I use WPA2-PSK with AES (also tried with TKIP and automatic mode, and with disabled security too), but neither have helped me. Then I contacted the reseller and they gave me a new one, and said it could have had some special problem. The new one, which I'm using now, got the same problem.

Have any ideas why this problem occurs repeatedly? Or if you need more information about my devices, router or settings, please write me. Thanks in advance!

Just recently my Lenovo laptop w/Windows 8.1 will not connect to my Vizio wireless router but it was fine a few months ago. This laptop will connect to my AT&T modem/router.
All my other wifi devices connect to both routers. The only one that does not is the Lenovo laptop with Windows 8.1. I suspect the last windows update screw up my connection. My laptop will connect to Vizio router wired. Every time Microsoft updates I get problems. Vizio router is xwr100. Any suggestions?

A:All devices connect to router except Windows 8.1 Laptop

If you are using both the Vizio router and Att gateway, you would need to place the Vizio behind the Att gateway in a DMS Plus zone

Yesterday afternoon, my internet appeared to have gone down. I attempted to fix it in the usual way (turn it off and on) but to no avail. I assumed it must be on the ISPs end and continued on with my day.

The internet was still not working this morning, so I checked to see if it might be the router that is causing the issue. Lo and behold, I can access the internet through the modem. Great, router is bust.

Reconfigured it, I updated the firmware, and then did a series of ping tests.

Ping test to google through the ethernet was successful. Ping test to router IP address through the router was successful. Ping test to google through router was unsuccessful.

Does anyone have an idea what the problem might be? Just to reiterate, this is an issue across all devices (Mac, PC, iPhone/iPad, Android, PS3, etc... )

A:Router spontaneously stops working across all devices

Hopefully, you know and can still log into the router.
find the WAN side, specifically Router Status or that display that

IP Address (the public address, not 192.x.y.z)
Default Gateway (your connection to the ISP)
DHCP Server (will not be one of your lan addresses)
Subnet Mask

DNS Server
Lease Obtained
Lease Expires
if any of the first three are missing, then the modem did not feed the information to the router
OR the router did not save it.

disconnect the modem->router
power off both
wait one minute
power on the modem
connect the router (but still powered off)
when the modem is fully sync'd with the ISP
power on the router
from your computer

ping (a ping by address)
nslookup (a dns request that should resolve to an address)

ping (a ping that requires nslookup to work)

I have a new tower (desktop computer). When it's powered on (active or sleep mode) it will boot all other devices in the house using the router (another desktop, 4 laptops, and 2 game consoles via ethernet or wifi connection - doesn't matter). The new tower does NOT have wifi and does NOT have to be connected to the router via ethernet to cause the disconnect.

Here's what the utility brought up about the tower:

I have 2 wireless PCs and a BlackBerry that connect to my dlink router. I am finding that my BlackBerry is constantly getting kicked off the network, and I always have to reconnect before I can use the internet. (It still says that it's connected though) I was told that a dual channel router would fix this.

So my question is, will 3 devices work without a problem on a dual channel router? Or is my BlackBerry still going to be "booted off"?

A:How many devices can a dual channel router handle?

Recently installed a new motherboard -- ever since then I've been randomly disconnecting all users on my network -- four different computers usually. I've tried everything we can think of, including anti-spyware scans and antivirus scans, reinstalling ethernet drivers on the onboard ethernet, using a different ethernet card, releasing/renewing IP address, etc.

My friend told me to run a scan, and I removed two proccesses already but this is the update log I have for right now:

Normally some router default is opening of some ports like http, and ftp which may be made more secured , by portforwarding the ports to unused devices ip, in one"s pc. This is the solution given by leading av, and i do not know, how to know the ips of the unused devices on my computer.

Hey guys,

Just a quick one I'm sure most could answer, I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to Wifi, and my router is kicking devices off when we have more than 4, picking and choosing which devices it will allow Wifi too. We often have 3 phones, 2 laptops and 1 PC in the house which need constant connection. What do I do to make this happen?

My Router is a D-Link: DSL-2780, I'm with Talk-Talk in the UK.

Thanks in advance!

A:Solved: Router kicks Wifi devices off.

Hi! I'll try to keep this as brief as possible, but it's really difficult to explain. One of my email buddies (fortunately he's an honest person) recently told me that any email I send him, from both my home and work computers, has a ton of garbled info attached to the end of the email... The info includes previous emails I've sent to other people, cell phone bill details, shopping details - ANY and EVERYTHING I do online is connected to my emails to him. It doesn't matter what email I use... My Outlook account at work, Gmail, Aol, RR... it all attaches info to EVERY email I send to him. Even the "Read Receipt" he receives when I click on one of his emails has info attached to it. !?!?!?!!! IT'S EXTREMELY DISTURBING! And he also receives info from my family members who use my computer at home, so it's not just MY info he's receiving.

I do know that he is on a "Whitelist" with the company he works for (for a very important reason), so he's not bound to the security that everyone else is protected by. He's had his computer restaged twice and it still keeps happening. He uses Outlook and it happens with his desktop AND his laptop at work.

I thought about talking to my IT Helpdesk at work, but haven't yet since this is happening from EVERY computer I use, so I know it's not a specific computer issue. Is there, perhaps, something that my friend has done, without my knowing, to gain access to my per... Read more

I have a Bell 2-wire DSL modem/router with 3 Ethernet attached PC's. The last Ethernet port on the Bell modem/router is attached to a second router (Linksys E3000). On the Linksys I have a network printer (Brother MFC-465CN) Ethernet attached to one of the 4 Ethernet ports. How do I make it so I can see the printer from the PC's? They are all using Windows 7.

A:Solved: Can't connect to network printer attached to second router

You include the Linksys router (but not using its NAT feature) and the printer on the same LAN as the computers ...

JohnWill's procedure (Aug. 30, 2008) for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses through, I'd assign the secondary router as it's IP address, for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. [You will not need a cross-over cable if one of the ... Read more

I noticed an unknown device ( now disabled) that was connected via ethernet cable to my 2wire gateway router/modem. The thing is, i only have one working laptop that connects wirelessly and on one occassion ( 2 days ago) i used ethernet cable. These 2 events where on my router/modem homepage but a third one "unknown device" via ethernet cable , i do not know where it came from.

I've never seen this before because I routinely check my router/modems homepage and i never saw this unknown device ever. It just popped up today. I called ATT and they said they cannot verify what type of device it was, or when it was connected, or how long it was connected. The only thing they can verify is that it was connected using ethernet cable. Is there another way to figure out what this device is? I am thinking it could be a router/modem glitch but then again i live in an apartment and i wasn't home yesterday so you know just taking extra precautions and everything.
