No audio in speakers -at all-, Windows is playing sound

Q: No audio in speakers -at all-, Windows is playing sound

So I built this computer a few weeks ago with Windows 7 Ultimate. Everything sound-wise has been working til a few days ago, but I have been working through some video problems.
Since this started on Friday, the sound mixer/volume control shows sound playing. But nothing comes out the speakers. When I click the top, it doesn't say 'speakers', it says 'Realtek audio'. When I click that, the sound window comes up and under "jacks" it says "rear optical jack." The top says S/PDIF. Those are both formats that I have never used on this system. I've always used only the rear panel analog jack.

Anyways, I feel like I've tried everything under the sun and I'm close to RMA'ing the motherboard. It's that bad. Anyhelp is uber appreciated. Thanks guys

A: No audio in speakers -at all-, Windows is playing sound

Go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound Panel. In the Playback section, your "Speakers" should be set as the default playback device. It sounds like the digital is now set as playback.

I dual booted win7 along with win xp . My sound card , Zonar Dg works fine in xp . i loaded the drivers for win7 . The sound bar in the speaker in task bar shows audio is playing and also shows playing in Zonar program . No sound is coming from speakers .

Note : Sound did come from speakers one time . I think it was a video but no sound from any mp3 files on my pc . Sound since has never worked . Only that one time . Very odd I think .

I have tried all the usual things since I am used to re installing xp many times . not muted . DG card selected as default . Speakers set to proper mode in zonar app .

I tried using the realtek audio on my motherboard , which does work in XP . Not working in 7 .

I am stumpped on this one . Maybe I could use the xp compatibility ? Never used this so really do not know much about it .

thank you for any help .

A:No sound from speakers but audio playing

If you have the RealTek enabled, disable it in the BIOS. It can cause conflicts and potentially the problem you have. Windows 7 will only allow one default audio playback device, unlike XP that would allow more.

Hey Everyone, Bit of an issue I've had here ever since I "upgraded" to Windows 10. My audio is playing through both my headphones and my speakers simultaneously. What I've already tried:Uninstalling and reinstalling drivers.Installing Realtek.Uninstalling drivers and then shutting my laptop down, then restarting it. None of these have done anything to alleviate the issue so far. Also, in the other forums I've read on the topic, everyone talks about having either a "Speaker/Headphones" option or separate "Speaker" and "Headphone" options in the playback tab of the sound bar in control panel, but I only have this:   There's only an option for the speakers, even when I enable viewing of disabled devices. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

So I recently opened my CPU because it was lagging and I thought maybe a little clean up might do the trick. So I softly brushed the drivers inside the CPU to get some dust off. However, when I turned on my PC, it seems that whenever I watch videos or play games, a loud crackling sound comes out from my speakers. I don't know what is causing this.

I have tried disabling my drivers (sound and display) but to no avail. However, if I mute the volume on my sound driver, the sound disappears. Which lead me to the conclusion that it might be a conflict of sound and display.

Since the problem only occured when I opened my CPU and cleaned it, it might also be a wiring problem or something.

Can someone help me on this?

I've posted this issue before on numerous support fourms, and none of them or I could figure out this issue. It's been driving me nuts.

A couple months ago I cleaned my computer (plugged everything out, cleaned the area/computer, etc.) when I put everything back together and booted up, I had no sound, but the tray icon indicated sound was indeed going through. As far as I knew nothing had been changed. I made sure everything was plugged in correctly, reinstalled the drivers, made sure I didn't click something off I shouldn't have, but still nothing. But then I plugged in headphones into the tower headphone jack, and boom I had sound. I was as surprised as everyone else. Someone suggested then, to rule out a hardware issue, that I download Ubuntu and see if the sound problem occurs there. It didn't, I had sound coming out of my speakers.

I would hate to re-install Win, as I've gone without doing so for five years. But if it came down to it, it's whatever.

I use the on-board sound from my MB, as I've learned over the years sound cards are a thing of the past. But perhaps I could reattach the old one I have? It's sadly over 10 years old however, I don't know if it would be worth trying. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Major cudos if we're able to figure this out once and for all. Good luck

My system:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit
AMD Phenom II X4 965
Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3 (on-board sound)
Ripjaws 8 GB
Nvida Geforce GTX 780

Well, i have 5.1 creativ speakers got about 2 years back. they worked fine with wxp but when i upgraded to wvista and w7 all hell broke loose. at a point in time in vista i got the rear speakers to work. when i upgraded to w7, i also got the rear speakers to work eventually. i now have a new motherboard with shitty drivers and can't get the rear speakers to work. in the tests they work but when i play music, watch movies anything nothing comes out of the front centre or rear speakers. any help guiz?
p.s. the drivers my mobo uses are VIA HD Audio deck. i've tried uninstall all sound drivers and reinstalling but to no aveil
p.s. also at one point in time few days ago everything was working but the next day the rears just stopped...

A:5.1 Speakers rear and mid sound not playing any sound apart from test

did all the speakers sound when test in via hd audio deck or windows 7 audio control panel?

if yes, most likely you will need to enable the 'upmix' feature of VIA. I'm not sure what is it called, but in Realtek it is called Realtek Speaker Fill or Dolby ProLogic IIx. If there isn't any, you may want to try Channel Mixer for foobar2000.

Out of nowhere I've had a problem with the audio of my laptop. Audio plays from both the laptop speakers and the headphones when they are plugged in. I've tried setting the headphones as default device in playback settings but this doesn't work. The headphones don't work when I try to test them either. I've had a look around online and haven't found any solutions yet. I tried updating the audio drivers but that didn't get the job done either.

My computer uses the Realtek HD Audio Manager. I have headphones plugged into the front panel and speakers plugged into the board itself on the back. I use nircmd to switch the default audio device between the speakers and headphones.

When I have the headphones set as the default device, audio plays out only the headphones. When the speakers are the default device, audio plays out both the speakers and the headphones. I can't figure out how to actually disable audio from the headphones when the speakers are the default device (short of disabling the actual device or unplugging it).

How can I properly disable the headphones when I want to use the speakers?

I have my headphones plugged in and the audio is playing music through the speakers and through the head phones. Originally there was a message by Dell Audio telling me "You just plugged a device into the audio jack" then a millisecond later "You just unplugged a device from the audio jack". I have my headphones plugged in but those messages keep popping up.
I deleted and reinstalled Realtek and this is still happening. I pushed the headphones into the audio jack real hard and it stayed at "You just plugged a device into the audio jack" for a little while then it went back to "You just unplugged a device from the audio jack". This is driving me crazy. I just want to listen to music through my headphones

Hey everyone,

I hope I can get some help here. I'm on a Samsung NC10 Netbook with Windows XP (service pack 3). I'm accessing the internet through a wired connection, which in turn goes through a router.

For some reason, my computer has started playing what sounds like a coorporate radio ad at random intervals. It's just a quick 5-second bit, but it is annoying and I can't figure out why it's happening. I don't run ICQ, AIM, MSN, or any other program like that, so that's not the source of the audio.

So far, it has always been the same ad. It usually happens while Firefox is open. I think the ad is for a TV show; it has a male voice saying "You asked for more, so the guys are back" and concludes with "a new season starting soon", or something along those lines. The ad is usually preceeded by 2-3 random "clicking" sounds, although I'm not clicking anything.

I routinely scan my system using Avira Antivrus as well as Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware. Avira did, in fact, alert me of a "html script virus" today, which I chose to delete. (Unfortunately, I didn't save a log file. Dumb, I know.) MBAM cleared out some stuff as well. According to both programs, my system should now be clean; -- however, the problem persists.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A:Help needed: Audio ad playing randomly over speakers

Almost forgot, -- the audio ads are usually preceeded by 3-5 fast "clicking" sounds, even when I'm not clicking anything. I have been told that these clicks are evidence of something tapping into the windows explorer, though I'll leave that up to you.

On another note, a third clip just "surfaced". The TV show ad always seems to come first, though.

I installed Windows 7 Ultimate back in March of 2009, and it is working perfectly, except for one error that has appeared just earlier today. When I plug headphones into my laptop, it does not recognise this, and does not channel audio into them - it just plays through the laptop speakers. I did not do anything which could trigger such an odd problem, to my knowledge. I used Apple Software Update to upgrade my installation of the Safari web browser, and then restarted my machine.

When it had booted up again, I opened iTunes and began to listen to music. It began playing through the speakers, so confused as I was, I tried another pair of headphones, as well as a pair of earbuds. I have installed newer audio card drivers, and it has not rectified the problem, so I really have no idea what is goign on. I'd love to simply try System Restore, but I don't believe I ever set it up, meaning I do not have a previous point to go back to. Please, if you can think of any other possible solutions, do tell me!

This is now completely irrelevant. After messing around with Realtek Audio Manager, everything is working again. Wonderful.

If all else fails, I should be able to purchase a set of speakers and use those, am I correct?

I have Logitech X-530 speakers, a 5.1 setup. Yesterday I wanted to use my headset to play a game, so I had to change my settings to stereo to get the sound out of both the left and right headphones. When I had finished, I changed it back to 5.1 through the control panel, but now the sound is only playing out of the left and right speakers. All speakers are functional, since when I test it through the control panel the 'bing' sound plays through all one-by-one. The speakers worked fully in 5.1 before I changed the settings.

Hey everyone. I have a quick question maybe someone could please help me with. Here goes...

I have Altec Lansing speakers (2 speakers and a sub) on my Windows XP. I was watching a movie and my sound just quite on me. No popping noise, nothing. Just silence. I didn't have the volume really high, nor the bass.
The speakers still have power and turn on. I tried plugging them into my Ipod, nothing. Tried just the left speaker in my Ipod and it actually worked!
(Setup= left speaker to the right speaker, right speaker to the sub woofer, sub to the computer and wall.)
I don't think it's software because head phones work with my computer.
So, does anyone have any ideas why the speakers don't work?

P.S. Speaker serial number: CHW0529366

A:My speakers quite playing sound for me... help plz!

I know what you mean by putting in the left speaker to the ipod. It was just like a piece of ACS45.1

Do you know how long have been your speaker works? If it;s old, maybe some component need to be replaced i.e wires and some capacitor.

Hi there, I've noticed that out of the blue, when I play any sound through the Dell speakers on my system, the vocals and some of the music sounds like it's echoing or very distant. I've played the same music through a pair of USB headphones and it sounds fine so I can only deduce that it's a problem with either the speakers or the sounds card/driver. I have turned off all presets/effects and the issue is still there. I hope someone might have some clues as to why this is happening. The driver is the latest available from Dell. Cheers, Pete

On Sunday random adverts began playing on my laptop speakers. There's no video, just audio. It plays at random points throughout the day. Even when all applications are closed and all i can see is my desktop the adverts will still randomly begin playing. I can't listen to music or watch videos without the adverts randomly interrupting and playing at the same time. I've used AVG Free edition to scan for viruses, Spybot search & destroy and SUPER Antispyware. None of these could stop the adverts. I tried going through every process in task manager while the adverts were playing to see if i could find it but i couldn't. I looked in the volume mixer of the volume icon in the system tray when the adverts were playing but no apps were present. I initially asked for help in another forum, where they told me to upload a log using Hijackthis, which i did, and from that log they told me to fix 'R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyServer = http=', which i did. So pretty much what is happening is my speakers will start to buzz when sound isnt playing. I have an Audigy 2 soundblaster but when I go to update my drivers on my sound stuff its Sigmatel High Definition Audio CODEC.

When I play music or anything that produces a sound on my computer, my speakers work great! But when there is a pause in sound playing, I get this buzzing sound that is at the same level of volume as the sound or music playing before it paused. Now this problem goes off and on but im tired of having to deal with it.

I updated my drivers on it and for a while it worked fine, then all of the sudden it came back again.

What would be great is if anybody would know how to fix this damn problem! Thanks in advance to helping me out!

A:Playing sound from both speakers and headphones

What is the make and model of the computer? What operating system and sound card are you using? This information will help us narrow down the problem.

I would start by checking your Windows audio settings for anything you can mute or un-mute that would be related to the issue. I would check the sound card manufacturer's program as well if there is one, they usually have a lot of additional settings like "detect headphones when plugged in" that can cause this.

I have tried plugging it into the headphone jack in the creative speakers, and unplugging the speakers and trying it in the front and back ports but it makes no difference.

Hi all,

I recently upgraded from Windows 7 to 8.1 using the same hardware as before, and have encountered a strange problem that I can't find the solution to.

I'm using an Alesis IO|2 usb audio interface (which my speakers are connected to) and a Razer Megalodon usb headset. Both are completely functional when used independently (ie. if I'm not using my headset, everything plays through my speakers fine, and vice versa).

However, there are many situations where I'm used to having audio coming through my headset and speakers at the same time. For example, if I'm on a Skype call I'm used to having the call audio coming out of my headset while still being able to play music etc out of my speakers.

The problem: Since using Windows 8.1, when trying to do this, both my speaker and headset audio breaks down completely into sporadic glitchy & loud crackles. If I want to listen to music while talking on Skype I have to disable my speakers (in windows playback devices screen) to force all audio out of my headset.

Neither of my USB devices has drivers associated with them, and I have the latest firmware on both, leading me to believe this is some problem with Windows. Has anyone got any ideas? I've spent hours trying to resolve this and have yet to even find someone with the same problem...

Under "Volume Mixer" I see a "Name Not Available" that seems to be the sources of the audio.  Neither MBAM and Kaspersky TDSS found anything at all.  I have a current DDS log and a GMER log if you would like to see them.
I've inspected all of the startup items and all running processes and can't spot the culprit.  In searching around on BleepingComputer it seems a few others have had the same thing in the last couple of weeks and that it was a rootkit.
Thanks in advance for the help.

A:Rootkit? Random Audio Playing from speakers with no apps running

The audio seems to be mostly randomly selected commercials with it being about 50/50 english and spanish.  It does happen both at home and at the office 70 miles away, so i don't think it's interference from a local tower, etc...

In the Windows audio playback tab there's only "speakers" but sound is playing from both speakers and the headphones, with headphones plugged into the right jack. I checked the Realtek Control Panel and there was F**K ALL for options there (see attached). There is an Intel(R) Display Audio in Device Manager alongside Realtek High Definition Audio. So now I can't watch warm-up videos at school without blasting the sounds through my speakers as well.

I tried a System Restore to before the problem started but it didn't do anything. The problem started around the time I ran an Advanced Systemcare 8 scan, which does the following tasks:
Spyware Removal
Registry Fix
Privacy Sweep
Junk Files Clean
Internet Boost
Shortcuts Fix
Registry Defrag
System Optimization
Security Defense
Disk Scan
Vulnerability Fix (Windows Updates)
Disk Optimization
Also when I move my laptop it shuts off for some reason, so it could've interupted the scan or updates or something.

Hello @misspatrice, Thank you for re-visiting the HP Forums! I understand that there is audio playing from both your speakers and headphones on your HP 15-ac135ds. Begin by performing a hard reset. Once the notebook is back on, follow the No Sound from Speakers document which shows you how to use the audio troubleshooter. HP Notebook PCs - No Sound from Speakers (I know the document says Windows 8 but the steps should be the same for Windows 10) There is also an accepted resolution to an issue similar to this posted by @SuperMario1 at this link: After completing these steps I'm sure the audio will be working correctly! If this information has helped you resolve the issue, click the thumbs up!

Hello lee522, Welcome to the HP Forums!I understand there is sound coming from both the speakers and headphones. To resolve the issue, please try these basic steps: 1. Go into Control Panel, then Sound.2. Look for the Recording tab.3. Select your microphone/headset as the default device, and press OK. If these steps do not work, this Microsoft forum has a few more suggestions: How prevent sound from playing through both headphones and speakers Please let me know your results. My computer was blue screening. I had a warranty RMA through my manufacturer and I just got it back, fixed. However since then, my Logitech X-530 5.1 surround speakers have been messed up. Initially I thought the front two were not working, but when I was testing I found the Left Rear works and the Right Rear sound comes through the Front Left speaker. The Subwoofer is fine, but the Right Front and Rear have no sound. To be more clear, when my realtek audio manager tests the front two speakers, there is zero sound. When it checks the LR it comes through the LR fine, but the RR comes through the LF speaker. I've unplugged, checked wires, made sure everything was plugged in correctly, and I reinstalled my realtek HD audio driver also. Can anybody offer some help? Thanks.

I bought the plantronics .Audio 335 studio headphones, but when I plugged them in, it screwed up my sound. My compute'rs sound is now playing through both the headphones AND the laptop speakers. After unplugging it and trying again a couple times, I gave up and decided to just use my old headphones.

Except for the sound still played through both the headphones and laptop speakers.

Distraught, I restarted my computer. When that didn't work, I restored my system to a point I made yesterday. Still no luck. I've been scrounging google for a few hours now, and nothing is helping. Any ideas? I REFUSE to refresh my system and reinstall all of my programs again.

This is urgent. I'm a freelance musician and require headphones for my work.

Have you tried with and without the microphone adapter? In your sound device manager see if there is a setting you can change when the headphones are plugged in.

I just installed AIMP3 player
Put in a CD in the tray and Windows Media Player opened as default player
It played fine.
Closed WMP

Went to Windows Explorer and to the drive location (E), and rt clicked on the 1st track and it gave me Open With options, I chose AIMP3.
Track played

Went to
Start / Default Programs / Change AutoPlay settings and changed Audio CD to Open with AIMP3 using AIMP
re-inserted CD
It started playing using AIMP3, I can see the visualization moving and it moves thru the tracks, but no sound to speakers.

There must be a switch I didn't flip somewhere...
Any ideas on where?

A:Installed AIMP3 - No sound to speakers when playing CD

I have to guess, as there isn't enough system info and I don't have AIMP3.

But, as it plays OK with Windows Media Player, it says something in AIMP3 is not configured correctly. Check the options in AIMP3, make sure your "Speakers" are set as the default playback device.

I've been stuggling with this for a few hours now and am at the end of my wits..

I've got two audio devices that I would like to link to my PC at once.
I've got one plug connected to the back panel, and one to the front. But one always cuts off the other. In my sound devices, the system registers them both as: "speakers, VIA High Definition Audio, Standard device"

Is there any way that I can connect them both at once, and still have both of them outputting audio?

I hope the internet will save the day!

Many thanks in advance!

If you use realtek,

Otherwise You're pretty much screwed, only other way is to use Virtual audio cable, but you'd have to set it up every time you booted (and it costs 20$)

Hi guys, just reinstalled windows 7. everything works great, then I went to paly a file and to my surprise, no sound. Tested speakers on another device, they work. Sound card drivers are working and up to date.

When I play a media file, I can see the sound gage go. So I went in sounds, playback device, and all I see in there is my sound card, no speakers or headphones icon. Thus no sounds from speakers. Tried other headphones/speakers they also dont work on the PC.

First two screenshots are my Device Manager, third one shows my playback devices.. My wife needs this for her business and I am losing sleep over this for days now I tried everything. Any ideas?

A:Windows 7 SOUND, No Speakers in Playback device, thus no sound from speakers

Hi -

What sound card do you have?

Double-click on the HD audio device in Device Manager - what is driver and date?

Usually there is an audio codec/ drivers, e.g., IDT, Realtek, etc... that must be installed.

What are system specs - exact model number from label on back of PC, please.

I've recently purchased a brand new PC for gaming, i'll list the specs below.
i7-2700k Intel CPU (3.5GHz) + Fan
8GB DDR3 RAM (16gb Max)
500gb Sata III Hard Drive, 7200RPM
Asus Motherboard (ASUS P8H61-MLE USB3)
NVidia GTX550Ti Performance Video Card, 1.0g GDDR5 RAM, VGA/DVi/HDMi
Wireless 802.11 b/g/n
500W PSU
Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium

I've downloaded steam and bought a few games e.g. Arma 2, Skyrim, Blacklight Retrobution and my system crashes when I play these games after about 5-10 minutes. The screen goes black to a "NO SIGNAL" image and my speakers make a loud humming noise much like the sound is on repeat. The only solution is to perform a hard shutdown by holding the power button.

I've checked the VGA cable is connected correctly and i've updated my graphics cards drivers. I've also let Windows perform all the updates as it's a new computer.

It's beyond me now so that's why i've come to you guys.

I'd appreciate any help on the matter.

Went to town and bought a DVI cable to see if that would change anything, it lasts a little longer then crashes again.

I installed an internal monitoring system and saw that the graphics card temp went to 76C when playing Arma 2 then crashed.

I've been using the onboard audio/sound from my motherboard on my XP desktop for the past 4 years. I bought a 5.1 surround sound set of speakers from Logitech (x-530) about 3 years ago, but only used the FL, FR, and subwoofer, because my mobo doesn't support surround sound -- it doesn't have the rear / center+subwoofer jacks that my speakers need to plug into.

Today I bought a Dynex 5.1 sound card from Best Buy ($30) -- opened my tower, popped the sound card into an available port, installed the drivers from the CD, restarted the computer, set the output to 5.1 in the Sounds and Audio Devices window from the control panel, in the "Audio Deck" (the software that came with the card) I set it to 6 channel, made sure all of the speakers were plugged into the subwoofer which connects to the front-right speaker, and plugged the green, black, and orange plugs from the FR speaker into the proper jacks on the sound card, turned some test music on....

And it's just coming out of the same two front speakers and the subwoofer like it was when I was running just the mobo audio. I've tried a few DVDs with PowerDVD but likewise, the sound is not coming out of the rear or center speakers. Then again I'm using the free version, I think. At least, under the audio tab in configurations it doesn't have any settings that specify surround, just 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8 speakers. I tried each setting, but there's never any sound coming from the... Read more

A:5.1 surround troubles -- rear speakers not playing sound

Dynex is not a company known for quality in their products, so it may be simply that the sound card is of poor build quality. However, I think it is more likely that you simply do not have any surround capable games or programs. Since these programs do not support surround sound, nothing will come out of the rear speakers. I have experienced this problem with my Logitech X-540s when I use a program with no surround support.

Starting about a week ago whenever any audio is being played through my computer (speaker or headphone) I will hear a buzzing sound and occasionally the audio with skip. This happens weather I am playing audio that is being streamed from the internet or that is on my computer directly.

I have tried several things to fix this problem including installing all windows updates that are available as well as updating my audio drivers.

I am running windows 7 home premium 64 bit. My computer model is hp pavilion dv7t quad 6100 and I have IDT high definition audio codec driver version 6.10.6381.0 which my computer says is the latest driver version. Updating to this version has not solved the problem, however.

Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated. If there is additional info that is neccesary, please let me know and I will post it.

A:IDT High Def Audio, buzzing sound when playing any sort of audio.

Unplug the speakers from the PC and see if you still get the buzz with headphones. Some "buzz" problems can be related to "AC power ground loop" problems if some separately powered devices are connected.

Noise and skipping are problems that have been posted here before. There is no "one fix" for that. There are possible hardware problems, drivers (including video drivers), Interrupt issues, Wi Fi caused, etc.

Skipping can be because the other device that is on the shared Interrupt that the sound is on is interrupting the sound. Sound is always on a shared interrupt (IRQ) with a higher priority device. You can try this: go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the IDT and then LEFT click "Uninstall". DO NOT check the box to uninstall the drivers. Then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect the sound and reinstall it and some times put it on a different shared IRQ.

So I updated my PC today and when it came back on there was no sound what so ever! My g35's still have sound but my Logitech Z5500 nothing, I have tried everything, updating, re installing the Realtek sound drivers, restoring the pc, even wired the speakers up to my partners media PC and sound comes through ruling out speakers.

I have tried upgrading the bios, been in bios looking around everything is enabled, in playback device option the green bar is filling up indicating everything is fine there.

I have tried a SPDIF Optical cable, nothing, the standard black, green and orange cables, and nothing, I'm at witts end with the thing at the moment.

Hope you guys can help.

A:No sound from audio out to speakers

I hate sound problems. Fought at least three times in the past year after updates of one kind or another. For me, I finally discovered that many of the playback and record devices have their own level controls and "listen" selections, and source levels in Control Panel->Sounds. I had no sound for a while, and I also had a reverb or echo for a while. Finally I understand 'how' to make it work, but not the 'why' it is the way it is.

Hey guys.

I've searched everywhere and am now at my wit's end. I cannot solve this problem:

I recently moved house. Disassembled and reassembled my computer. I didn't have access to speakers at the new place so I didn't have any sound for a while. In the interim, my graphics card started giving me problems (I suspect something untoward happened to it on the flight) and I've been unable to have it repaired. I've switched to the onboard GPU that comes with the core i5. I've also upgraded to windows 8.1

However, having acquired a pair of speakers and plugged them in, I get no sound. Attempting to plug in a headset also gives no sound and the microphone doesn't work. Windows does detect the speakers being plugged into the panel, same for microphone. Volume levels are green and functioning. There is simply no sound reaching the speakers. My USB Snowball microphone, however, DOES work.

I have attempted to reinstall the realtek audio drivers on more than one occasion, to no avail. I can confirm that my sound used to work before I moved. The changes that have taken place are as follows:

a) Moved - reassembled PC in new casing - there is no front audio panel, and no front audio cables are connected to the mother board.

b) Installed TP Link WN723N mini wireless USB adaptor (windows insists on using the Realtek RTL81888EU driver for this as the TP Link drivers have issues)

c) Lost graphics card (ATI Radeon HD6870) and shifted to onboard Int... Read more

I recently put together a new system with a fresh installation of Windows 7 64 bit. I cannot get sound to come from my speakers no matter what I have tried. I have trolled through all the forums I could find on the subject, and tried every possible solution, to no avail. I am hoping I simply missed something somewhere along the way, so I will list my specs, as well as everything I have tried thus far.

I am going to attempt to provide as much information as possible, but if I miss something you need to get the full picture, please let me know.

Specs first:

MSI 870A-G54 motherboard (with onboard audio - Chipset integrated by Realtek? ALC892)
AMD Athlon II X2 255 CPU - 3.1 Ghz Dual Core
Corsair 8 Gb Ram - DDR3 1333 MHz
Windows 7 64 bit (also tried to get this working on Vista 32 bit installation on same machine, with same results)
XFX ATI Radeon HD 5550 Graphics Card
Seagate 1 TB SATA 300 HDD
Antec 500W PSU
Creative 5.1 surround speakers - The jacks are the usual black, orange and green, for Center/Sub, Rear, and Left/Right
Now, here are the steps I have followed:
Installed Win 7, and soon discovered sound was not configured properly. The system kept picking the optical output as the default device, even though there was no optical device connected, and it also showed that the speakers were not plugged in, even though they were, as in the pic below
After digging through various forums, got advice to click on the Connector Settings (the icon that looks like a folder) in th... Read more

I first noticed this a few days ago, when I was playing a video in VLC player. At the time I figured the audio of the .avi was either encoded badly or VLC was acting up, so I dismissed it as an anomaly. However, I started noticing it more as I watched something else later that day, on files that usually play sound and video perfectly. I still thought it was VLC player though, so I restored all the default preferences, which didn't work, and I reinstalled and fully updated it but that didn't make a difference either.

Today though, I realised the problem isn't VLC player because I noticed it while playing back a video on YouTube, and now I can hear it just playing audio through Foobar, which I couldn't before.

I've tested playing the audio through my headphones and there is no fading in and out or jumps up in volume but there is when I play through the speakers, which makes me think it's down to the speakers. I also checked all the connections, cleaned and rewired them back up. Still, no difference. I checked whether I had any stupid audio effects on that might mess things up too, but I don't, so that can be ruled out too.

Anybody have a differential diagnosis?

I suspect that my speakers are sort of dying, and they are pretty old so it's not a surprise, although it is a pain in the ****. I accidentally had the speakers so loud the output audio distorted today too, which could have made it worse and led to it becoming more not... Read more

The driver claims to be installed properly but there is no sound coming from the speakers or headphones, except, inexplicably, the beeping noise when you set it on the dock. The beep comes from the laptop speakers on undock and through my plugged-in desktop speakers on docking. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the driver manually, I have let Windows reinstall the driver on reboot, I have tried the alternative Dolby driver but nothing is working. It installs the driver, says it happened correctly, the on-screen volume overlay pops up when I use the volume controls, but there is no sound. The mixer shows all volume sliders at max, nothing muted, and of course I've tried toggling and untoggling all of them. muting system volume does mute the docking beep.  This just started out of the blue when I turned the machine on today. I've been using it for over a year without any issues. What do I do? how do I troubleshoot this? I tried the windows troubleshooter which was obviously no help. The Thinkpad T420 is a model 4177 QKU. Dock is a 433715 mini dock series 3. I've been using the Conexant audio driver for over a year without problems.

A:T420 no sound from speakers or audio jack.

If you right click on the speaker icon in the lower right near the time, and select "playback devices", your speakers should be shown with a green check mark; and if you right click on the speakers, you should be given the option to test etc.      What happens when you do that, do you see the speakers set as default, and can you test and hear sounds successfully?

When listening to music or videos on the onboard speakers the sound will randomly and inexplicably fade to inaudible levels over the span of a few seconds, even at full volume. The volume returns to normal after pausing or muting the audio for a few seconds and then restarting it but then fades right back down to nearly nothing. Plugging external speakers or earphones into the dual-function microphone/ speaker input/ output jack changes the settings, including the volume, to whatever they were last time something was plugged in. If the onboard speakers are faded when plugging in an external apparatus, unplugging the external apparatus returns the settings to the last set of parameters for the onboard speakers and resets the sound playing through them back to normal volume levels and keeps it from fading again for a while. I have gone through the automated HP Support Assistant troubleshooter as well as the built-in Windows 10 audio troubleshooter. Neither restarting the computer, reinstalling the Realtek Audio driver, nor a hard reset has resolved the issue. I do not experience the same issue with the generic Windows HD audio driver but the sound quality and versatility of the Realtek driver is much better so if possible I'd like to try to see if I can resolve this issue with that driver to continue to use it.

A:Realtek HD Audio - No Sound through speakers \ headphones

I just went through this with another user and a Gigabyte motherboard. Never really resolved it as the user didn't want to do a complete reinstall. Everything else had been done and the user still had the problem.

However, lets try on yours.

First thing, go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the RealTek sound and then LEFT click "Uninstall". DO NOT uninstall the drivers. Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound.

If that does not fix it, uninstall the RealTek in the device manager but ALSO Uninstall the drivers. Then restart and when Windows starts, it will install the sound but it should be with the generic Windows "High Definition Audio Driver". See if the sound works with this configuration. If it does, it sounds like the RealTek driver you have may be corrupt. Download the R2.75 High Definition Codecs driver direct from RealTek and see how that works.

Dear all,

I have been reading 1000s of posts on the net for 5.1 Channel speakers giving outputs only through the front left and right speakers. Well, I am no exception

- Connected all the cables correctly to the respective jacks... but still...
- Tried atleast 5 different of HD Audio Drivers (including the latest by the onboard device maker VIA - v10_1200a, as well as the Microsoft generic HD Audio driver)... Installed, Completely wiped, Reinstalled, all possible combinations... but still...
- Tried adding the Sound Blaster 5.1 Channel PCI Card (SB 5.1 VX)... but still...
- Tweaked all possible 'Playback Devices' options... but still...
- Tried different 5.1 Channel testing audio files... but still...

But still still my speakers (brand new iBall MJ04 - iBall's latest model) doesn't play 5.1 Channel Audio

Following is my system specifications:

CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 @ 2.66GHz
Package (platform ID) - Socket 775 LGA
Mainboard Model - P5KPL-CM
Northbridge - Intel P35/G33/G31 rev. A2
Southbridge - Intel 82801GB (ICH7/R) rev. A1
Onboard Audio - VIA VT 1708B, 8-CH High Definition Audio
Memory Type - DDR2
Memory Size - 4096 MBytes
OS - Windows 7 Ultimate (64 Bit)

Though this board supports 8 Channel audio, even 5 Channel is not being played.... when an audio file or video file is played, all speakers flare up.... playing the audio is all speakers... this is NOT 5.1 channel audio... this is just 'Speaker Fill'.... playing the same sound in all the 5 speakers.... tr... A:5.1 Channel Audio - Sound only from Front Left and Right Speakers

I assume you are using something like this,

or similar cables to connect from the 6 RCA input jacks on the system to the 3 mini jacks on the computer (one each for the front left/right, sub/center and rear left/right).

Also is the audio you are trying to play stereo or 5.1? If it is only stereo then it requires using speaker fill to get sound from all speakers.

When playing games I would like to be able to hear the game sounds come from my speakers and my voice communications with my friends coming through my USB headset, like Xbox Live. I'm running Windows 7 with an Asus Xonar DX and for the life of me can't figure out how to do this. Is it possible to do natively in Windows 7? Is it program specific? It seems odd that my thousand dollar computer can't do what my hundred dollar Xbox does.

I put in a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio (PCIe), installed the latest driver from Creative, found here: Creative Worldwide Support (1.04.0000, released 30th June, 2009), and it seems that whenever I click things that make noise (a good example being the volume slider in the system tray), one of my speakers (which one being somewhat random) makes a fairly loud *popping* noise. It also does this when I press a button on the keyboard that makes noise (such as when I press the left arrow in the Find box in Chrome when it's empty).

Is anyone else having this issue? What could be the problem? Should I just buy a better card? (because according to a sticky in this section, this card isn't even a true X-Fi )

A:Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio: Speakers pop when I click some things

Does your motherboard have built-in sound?

In most cases, on-board sound is more than enough and sounds as good as a separate card.

Did you buy a separate card for a particular reason---possibly some features it has that on-board lacks?

Having said that, Creative Labs is not known for their driver support, so anything is possible.

I recently went into my computer to install a Corsair H80 Water pump for the GPU. Anyhow, after i connected all the cables and turned on the computer again i did not have any sound. Even though im not an expert with computers, i'm pretty sure all the cables are connected right (but there is always a possibility i screwed up there).
I do have sound devices, that is not the issue. After the first pc boot i had the Realtek digital output (realtek high definition audio) as the sound device. I went into the control panel and pressed sound. The previous audio device (that i had and was working) was there, but stated as "Not plugged in".
So, my computer does not detect or react as i connect any headsets nor speakers. I also checked the audio in the mixer to see that it "plays sound" which i can confirm.
I have searched the web for people with the same issues and tried a few "solutions" but none of them worked for me.
They were:
1. Uninstall and reinstalling the drivers
2. Making sure i got the latest versions of the drivers
3. Turning on the front jack panel in the Realtek HD Audio Manager, which resulted with the speakers apparing to be connected and works according to the computer but still no sound.
4. Tried different speakers and headphones.

So my question is, do you guys have any idea what to do? I have been sitting on this problem for quite a while now.

After trying several things im starting to believe it might be me who failed at connec... Read more

A:Audio devices undetected. Headphones or Speakers give no sound

The first thing to do, since you had it apart to install the water cooler, is to double (or triple) check all the internal cabling between the motherboard and the front panel connections. Second is to doublecheck the connections from your speaker system to the PC.

What is the status of the Realtek in the Device Manager? Does it show an error or does it show "working correctly"?

Are your "Speakers" set as the Default audio playback device in the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound Panel?

Has audio worked since reinstalling? Did you reinstall the Intel motherboard chipset drivers when your reinstalled? The motherboard chipset drivers are critical and many devices either will not work or not work correctly without the chipset drivers.

I know these are a lot of questions but a place to start.

I'm hoping someone can help me.I'm working on a custom pc that my brother built for me. The specs are in my signature.

I recently upgraded from 32 bit to 64 bit Windows 7 home premium (I know it's not the best, but it's what I could afford). I did a drive reformat also. Initially, everything was fine. But for some reason all of a sudden, I have no sound, my plugged in speakers are not detected at all and the audio service is not running. Everything else is fine. I assumed it was as a result of an update, so I did a system restore. I guess my restore points didn't go back far enough. No change.

-According to my motherboard specs, I have the realtek ALC888 onboard audio. So, I thought I'd just be able to install the latest hd audio driver for my os from realtek's site. I tried several times (10+). It prompts me to restart and when I do, it says that the device driver did not install correctly and it defaults to the microsoft one every time.

-In device manager, I have a yellow triangle next to one of the 2 "high definition audio controllers" with a code 10 error (device cannot start). Under sound, video and game controllers, I have "High definition audio device": microsoft, driver version 6.1.7601.17514 11/19/2010.

Hi all,

I just got a 5.1 Speakers set.
Anyway, the smart guys that designed the sound card, or drivers, dont let me use all specific jack holes to hook them up.
Instead, they force me to use mic and line out holes to get Center/Woofer and front sounds.
I need headphones and mic at least as often as speakers.

Anyway, I have a splitter device that let me connect both headphones and front speakers, also mic and Center/woofer.
Where can I find a simple application that let me switch from headphones/mic mode to 5.1 speakers mode.
I can write one myself in VB if I get the right direction where to look (Windows API?).

The best solution whould be a simple sys-tray icon that give me a menu to switch from 5.1 to headphones.
That whould set Speakers setup from desktop speakers to 5.1 speakers and mic/front checkbox you can see in C-panel/Sound and Audio device.

Hello all.
I have Bluetooth speaker that I have hooked up to my computer and is working properly.
I would like to also use the laptop speakers simultaneously to create a kind of surround sound system.
Is this possible? I have found many threads saying that it isn't.

When I use the audio device settings it just changes between the 2 outputs, it doesn't seem to allow me to use them both at once.
Is there any freeware that allows for this type of configuration?

A:Playing sound through two audio devices simultaneously

If the bluetooth speaker connects via a transmitter connected to the 3.5mm jack then its possible, otherwise its not.

My machine got infected with Viruses when it was rebuilt and the Virus protection software was not reloaded!

Over the last 10 days I have used McAfee, XoftSpySE, RegCure and Spyware Doctor to remove the majority of Viruses.

I still have one very annoying virus which none of the above can solve. An audio feed will suddenly start playing through my system without any prior action, it even starts if there is no one using the system! It is not always the same audio feed, they come in many lanuguages. Just this morning an American news feed started while I was checking my e-mail. There is no program running when the feed is playing, I can only assume it is some kind of process with a timer or a triggering mechanism to start playing.

Please help!

Kind regards.

Sounds to me like you’ve got a rogue process running in there somewhere, and it’s probably either coming from a system start up location or running as a scheduled task. Looks to me like you’ve already made a good start with software to track this down, however, I’ve personally found AdAware to be the most reliable at this sort of thing, so perhaps you could give that a go (available here and see what it turns up?

To check the Scheduled Tasks list, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Scheduled Tasks and see if there’s anything you don’t recognise in there; by default, this list should be empty, with only the ‘Add Scheduled Task’ icon displayed.

To check your Startup list, run MSCONFIG from the Start Menu’s RUN command, and then selecting the STARTUP tab. Look towards the bottom of the list for anything you don’t recognise in there, and Google it to see if it’s recognised as malware.

If you’ve still found nothing, then the next step involves searching in the registry, which if you’ve never done it before, can be a bit daunting, however, it may turn out to be the only thing short of an OS reinstall that sorts things like this out. Be CAREFUL here, because it’s really easy to mess up your entire system if the wrong thing is edited in the Registry You access the registry from the Start Menu’s RUN command by entering REGEDIT. I've spent alot of time to set the setting but it's not working, I updated the latest driver(realtek) and default the setting. The result is the same.

The audio is not balanced, like when you play a song, the bass will overcome the main voice, or the vocal will overcome the main voice.

Can anyone explain this?
Gladly appreciate for any help.

Hello game333,

I know what you mean and its hence why i don't use it.

But for now, how are you listening to your music/sounds?
Headphones or the built in speakers?

Try lowering the SRS WOW effect and see if that makes a difference.

Also, i would highly assume that the SRS is more suited to surround sound speaker systems but that is just speculation.

My computer died recently, so I dug out some fossil from way back to at least listen to music/watch some movies until I can buy a new one(Which won't be anytime soon). I hooked up the HDD from the dead PC to this one and everything is working OK(all things considered). However, I can't seem to be enable the sound. On paper everything seems fine even the "needles" are twitching(see image in the link) when I play an audio file but sound won't come out. The only Playback device available in the list is "Digital Audio (S/PDIF) 2- High Definiton Audio Device".

I checked the drivers and everything is up to date.
I hooked up the Speakers to the laptop they're working fine.

Help me out please, without the sound this thing is basically glorified texting machine.

Please fill in the "My System Specs" so we know what hardware you have.

Does the speakers do the same thing?

Have you tried a different headset?

Do you have the correct sound driver? The PC vendor (or motheboard in the case of a home/custom built system) sound drivers should be used. Non vendor drivers can be a problem in some systems.

Yesterday I started getting a rhythmic (stays in-time, not random) popping/clicking sound whenever I play certain audio sources. This happens on any of my devices whether they are connected directly to my computer, or to my computer via my external USB amp/DAC (an O2+ODAC Combo from JDSLabs). Youtube audio, for example, causes it, even if the Youtube video is muted in the browser. The popping/clicking sounds remain for an indeterminate time after the audio stops, ranging from a few seconds, to indefinitely (until I restart my computer). There doesn't seem to be any other performance/functional problems with my computer that I have noticed.

The only change I've made to my computer recently was I replaced one of my two monitors 2 days ago, but it was working just fine all that day (without this problem) until I woke up the next day.

I have tried increasing the minimum processor usage (as I've seen recommended for problems like this one) to no avail. I've also run both my anti-virus (Emsisoft Anti-Virus) and Malwarebytes.

Based on research I've already done, it could be a DPC Latency problem (seems to have similar symptoms), but I am having a hard time figuring out if that is the case, and if so, how to fix it. I installed the Windows Performance Toolkit, and have run xperf. I did it as follows:

I ran

I have homebuilt core i7 930 running an asus p5 premium. Whether I use onboard sound (realtek), sound blaster pcix titanium, or sound blaster omni usb, I get strange behavior where the sound will drop out while I'm watching a tv app (hdhomerun, or kodi as well), or listening to music.. at random times, could be 5 minutes, could be 45 minutes. To get the sound back, if I click the speaker icon and click the bar that plays the windows ding, it plays (a little crackly during the first few milliseconds, then clear, like it's waking up) and then sound plays normally until this happens again. So it's propagating through multiple different drivers. I read somewhere that audio devices can sleep (I suppose laptops mainly? Maybe I read it wrong).

Did some searches, found nothing similar, most are "no sound". Thoughts?

I have two monitors (one VGA and one HDMI ) to the CPU (new XPS 8700), but sound only comes out of the monitor speaker with the HDMI connection.  The other speaker does work and has been tested with a 3.5MM speaker cable.
The video card is NVIDA GTX 745.  In the audio set-up control panel from the NVIDIA, I disabled audio from the HDMI thinking that I could then run 3.5MM cable on a Y splitter to the audio out port and by-pass the HDMI cable.  I tried every port and either experienced no sound or sound in one or the other speaker.
I realize these speakers are not the best and I am fine with them.  I like the clean clutter desktop look.
Can anyone help me to get both of these monitor speakers working?

With Dell Support Assist microphone test -- earphone playback is good, on-board speaker is terribly scratchy. The sound card lists as "ATI high Definition Audio Device" and "IDT High Definition Audio CODEC."
The laptop is Dell Studio 15 (1555) running windows 7 Professional, 236GB used, 214GB free space, Intel P8700 2.53 GHz Processor, 64 bit OS, 4GB memoryThe built-in speakers used to sound good but now they are too scratchy to understand. However the headset and external speakers (both 3.5 mm jack interface) sound good and a HDMI connected projector sounds good.
I will appreciate advice.

A:On-board speakers are scratchy but external speakers & headphones sound good?

Hello. As a test, switch from the IDT audio driver to the Windows native audio driver.
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "IDT High Definition Audio Device".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart.[To get back to the IDT driver, do it again but reverse the names in steps 2 and 7.]
If you get the noise while using the native driver then it is not a driver issue, which would mean there is a strong chance of speaker failure, particularly since the noise is not in headphones. If you would like to replace the speakers I can point you to the service manual.

Heya.I've got an HP dv7t-7000. I've a recent Win10 clean install on it and I cannot get the speakers to work properly. This particular machine comes with a pair of Triple Bass Reflex Subwoofers, which means it has two run of the mill laptop speakers and an additional subwoofer under each speaker. I have installed the latest drivers from HP's driver page. They actually don't have drivers for Win10, so I'm using the Win8.1 ones. The installation runs smoothly and I can see the Beats Audio control panel. However, only the normal laptop speakers are being driven. No sound comes out of the subwoofers. After a lot of attempts with HP's drivers: installing with compatibility mode on, telling windows to update the drivers from the device manager, and tweaking every possible setting in the sound controls, I wound up in this reddit thread. I followed the steps, essentially replacing the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC that came with HP's drivers with Win10's generic High Definition Audio Driver. Naturally, this has removed the Beats Audio control panel since it removed the previous drivers that came with it.There are 3 sound devices according to the device manager: High Definition Audio Device (Speakers), Intel Audio1 and nVidia Audio1 (1 These names may not be accurate, I have no access to my computer right now). and upon doing this the audio stopped completely from all audio sources (ie windows sounds,speakers,line- in/heaphone jack)

I tried Disable/Reenable driver,Rollback driver,uninstall/reinstall and discovered that the driver is not supported for windows 8.
Upon learning this I have tried other Audio Drivers (i.e. Realtek HD Drivers etc) and no avail.

I?ve recently updated to Windows 8.1 and it auto reinstalled the original audio driver and still, no sound.
I have also checked all Audio Codecs and still no luck even going that route.

When I play an mp3 on let?s say wmplayer the volume bar will move up and down with the levels of the song that?s playing as per usual but I get no sound.
Volume level can be at 100% and there won?t be any noise at all, no distortion, white noise, just silence.

This happens no matter how sound is being produced music, videos, games, internet, windows sounds etc? And trying to get audio from headphone jack doesn?t work either.

Does anyone know of any solutions to the out of date driver issue... Read more

A:No Audio or Sounds from Speakers after upgade to Windows 8

Which do you have? The Conexant or RealTek? You must have the correct driver. e.g. the RealTek will not work with the Conexant, or the Conexant will not work with RealTek hardware.

8.1 does have some compatibility problems with some devices. Its sporadic and not all is affected. But, if it didn't work with Win 8, it may not be an 8.1 problem. In most cases (actually all that I've seen) Vista/Win 7 sound drivers work with Windows 8. (In my case I have RealTek and the Windows 7 drivers are compatible with Win 8 and Win 8.1).

One other thing to check is the Default Audio Playback device. Assuming you have the correct sound driver installed, the "Speakers" (PC's sound card) should be set as the default audio playback device. If HDMI or Digital is set, the speakers will not work.

Hi there, I've been having some real frustrating experiences trying to get my speakers to work. it all started when I replaced my hard drive after the old one died. The speakers I plugged in via audio/ headphone jack stopped working. The computer doesnt recognize any playback devices through the jack. But it will recognize my usb headphones no problem. I've tried every possible solution to this problem already listed on other sites (updating drivers, checking sound to enabled disabled audio devices, ect.) and none of them have worked. Any ideas? Also please dont post the whole "go to device manager and update drivers, or check sound to enable devices", I;ve already done that and it didnt work. Im looking for some real insight, not just a "solve all" solution.

A:Windows 7 will not detect speakers via audio jack.

I remember having a similar issue years ago and it turned out my speakers were analog and the card was digital. When I swapped something out, I had to correct the settings on the speaker.

I have 2 Samsung TV's hooked up to my PC, as well as a set of speakers. I am able to set the individual sound of each (Volume Control Panel), can set certain programs on a certain TVs or the speakers, I can set any of them as the default, but I can't figure out a way to male them all work at once, having all sounds pass through all three. Is this possible?

A:How do I make audio come out TV speakers and PC speakers simultaniously

Not that I'm aware. You can only set a single "default" device in Windows.
