# Can't control gain! No slider in control panel!

Q: Can't control gain! No slider in control panel!

Hello!
I got myself an Audio-Technica AT2020USB+ condenser microphone a few weeks ago, and I haven't really found out how I can change the gain, which I hear is important to do.
There is only one slider where the gain slider also should have been. The mic doesn't have a gain know like some other microphones have.

As you can see there is one slider. It only changes volume as far as I know.

How can I change the gain, is it needed, or can I maybe control gain using the volume slider?
If I can't change it directly through the mic or through the control panel, how can I change it? D:

A: Can't control gain! No slider in control panel!

I have a recording studio (Sonar X3) and use several AT mics but they are not USB mics (such as the AT2035 and AT2050).

"Volume level" is the same as "gain". You can adjust the "Volume Level" or you can adjust the "gain" - both are the same thing. On mixers, amplifiers, etc, some will call the volume control "level" and others "gain".

A USB mic should have its own listing in the Sound/Recording Panel. Whatever slider that is has, such as what you show, should adjust the volume level. Many recording programs also have volume level adjustments.

Good evening,

I've noticed a difference in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Personalization between editions of Windows 10.

My wife's laptop is running Windows 10 Home, and her personalization screen looks like this:

I'm running Windows 10 Enterprise, and my personalization screen looks like this:

Notice that the menu options on the left, and quick access to change the theme settings on the bottom are missing from the enterprise screenshot.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Is it simply a difference between editions? Or is there a setting that is not turned on in my installation?

I'm running windows XP on an old Dell Inspiron 1501 and I'm trying to get my microphone to play directly through my speakers so I can record them both simultaneously. The only answer I've been finding is to tick the 'microphone' checkbox in the volume control playback properties panel, but I don't have a microphone checkbox. There should be a 'microphone' box under SW Synth and CD player but I don't get one apparently.I've downloaded the latest SigmaTel Audio drivers from Dell and despite not having a problem with them before this, I'm inclined to believe that they're the problem. Any ideas?

A:No microphone control in playback Volume Control panel

Okay well of course I find an answer right after posting the topic:
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3517/t/19295458.aspx
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3517/p/18112824/18235810.aspx#18235810

Those two pages detail how to get an Input Monitor checkbox which functions just like the microphone one I wanted (although you can only mute it, not alter the volume). I used Instructional Set 3 from the second page, having to add the 'RecMonitorMute' entry as detailed in the first page and I can now hear my microphone input directly through my speakers.

HOWEVER, I'm still unable to record both the microphone and speaker sound at the same time. I thought recording the 'Stereo Mix' channel with the microphone coming through the speakers would work but it isn't and I don't know why. Any ideas?

Hello Josh,

Here's some more information about the Akamai Netsession Interface Control Panel that may help.

I suddenly noticed that I had a slider control in the top left hand corner of my desktop. It showed 0 to 90. It would slide up to 90 with my mouse, but immediately drop to 0 when I released it. Right click showed no results. It disappeared after a re-boot. Any ideas please

A:Strange slider control

Hello new,

This sounds like it may be your volume level indicator like below after pressing the volume button on your keyboard. You can also adjust the volume level by clicking on the volume icon in the notification area (right side) on the taskbar from your desktop.

Hope this helps,

The network I maintain at a school has policy restrictions which do not allow users access to the printer controls. However I would like them to have the ability to control their own print jobs and unpause printers etc. But when editing the policy I find that they get access to control panel at the same time and can do lots of possible damage.

Can I do this any way while minimising possible damage? We are running an NT4 network with some 95 and some NT workstations.

Hi,

I am cleaning up my friends computer. (Dell Latitude D630 - Windows XP-SP2)

She got it from her last job and there are all kinds of restrictions on it.

The account she logs on with is the administrator account and I have the PW etc.

When I try to use Windows Update I get:
"network policy settings prevent you from using windows update"

Trying to resolve it using this Windows solution,
When I try to RUN gpedit.msc, I get "The snap-in below, referenced in this document has been restricted by policy. Contact your administrator for details. Group Policy Object Editor."

I tried running MMC and adding the group policy snap in but it does not help.

Anyway, I do not have a XP disc or I would maybe restore the thing. Is there a way to get rid off all this restricted stuff that has been put on here?

thanks

Hello Pintree3,

Sorry, but UAC does not have an exception list since that would defeat the purpose of UAC if malware was to hijack one of the white listed programs.

You could use the tutorials below to have a program run elevated without getting a UAC prompt and still have UAC turned on though if you like.

Problem: when i play songs or watch videos or do anything that deals with the sound, the wave slider in the volume control will automatically jump from the high volume that i set it at to mute.

I have checked out the properties and volume control properties and still can't find a way for it to stay un-mute.

My volume control is the SoundMax Digital Audio driver...
i checked the hardware and it says it working properly and i can hear the sounds but only for some time, before the wave volume automatically jumps to mute...

this is getting annoying....

Any one have a solution to keep my wave volume from muting it self permanently...

A:Windows Xp Volume Control With Wave Slider

Hmmm...you might try using the native XP volume icon, rather than Sound Max.

I have SM on my system but I don't bother to use, I see no advantage to using the XP volume control (I did try the Sound Max control for a period of time) and any program I use for music file playback will have it's own volume controls.

Could be possible file corruption...I might try uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers which load Sound Max (if I really wanted to use it).

One thing to remember about Device Manager...it has no way (that I know of) to distinguish/inform the user...if a file is corrupt or not.

A:Beyond the slider is there a way of modifying UAC-User Account Control?

Hi, no there is no universal setting for that. There is however a workaround. Create a desktop icon for your programs and right click on the Icon select properties under "advanced" there is an option to "run as administrator" check this and now each time the program opens it does not nag you.

I was forced to move to a secondary computer due to a hardware problem (that I won't go into here: not relevant to current issue).

My WMP Classic worked perfectly on the old machine: same processor (P4), but different boards (old was Foxconn; new is Intel). The only big difference I see is in RAM: the old machine had 4G and this other one only 2G. Of course, there are other differences between the main boards, but nothing that (to my feeble mind...) would be relevant to this issue. It seems to me that this software should run fine on 2g RAM.

What happens is that when playing video files, the "slider" control stalls, that is to say it hesitates for several seconds to advance to the chosen location. In the older box, this was essentially instant.

Any ideas? I don't find anything in the 'options' area of WMP-C to adjust in this regard -- is there a cache/buffer-something that is perhaps too small and can be adjusted or something along those lines? I can post ALL hardware specs on both machines if needed, but my sense is that the only significant difference here is the RAM - but again, 2g ought to be plenty in this situation. (I'm not doing high-energy gaming or such, just trying to play video files.)

Oh - both boxes are XP Pro SP3 with all updates.

Thanx

A:how can i gain full control of files?

Hello and welcome jimele mate in the BIOS what order of boot devices do you have set up?? If you have the new drive set then there is something wrong with and that is why it goes looking for another boot source and yes if Windows is still on the old drive of course it will want to boot from it.

So just check in the BIOS first.

If you are plugging in to the external after the system has booted an you plug it in then why not save any data from that drive and them wipe it with the DISKPART clean all command or wipe disk with Partition Wizard both take about the same time to complete. You then have format that drive and then copy the data back to it from wherever you stored it.

Before we get into the nitty gritty stuff let us know what is on that drive besides Windows if it is just data just say data you want we do not need a detailed breakdown of it.

By the by a few more system specs please mate as it is very hard knowing what to advise if we do not know just about everything about your system.

Hiya

It may need to be a programming one:

not sure if it can be done. You may have to keep the Volume Controls minimised as well, which you can get by rightclicking the speaker icon.

no problems ere just curious. i just updated the driver for my msi r6950 pe. this is the first time ive had the power control slider visible in ccc. it never showed with my hd6850 and didnt show in any of the previous drivers for my 6950.

Q what does this slider actually adjust? does it supply more voltage to the card

thanks in advance any help is always much apreciated

A:power control slider apeared after ati driver update

Its actually been there for a few Catalyst versions. Don't remember which it was exactly but somewhere around the Cat 11.5 or so. It is sort of a one stop kind of thing as most of the settings in it are the same/linked to the ones in the Windows power options. The slider from what I can see is the same as the max and min power states in Windows power options, where you can manually set it depending on use. Personally Cool and quiet does the same thing automatically and very erll, that a manual adjustment is basically useless.

That all said you can disable it and not see it in CCC (or VCCC on a full AMD platform) by disabling both the Fuel and AOD services.

Did it before? The Windows volume control doesn't affect any of my players volumes, so if I have Winamp open for example, adjusting the volume with the Windows mixer control doesn't move the Winamp slider, nor does it move the WMP slider, which is why I leave Windows volume at full, and adjust the volume from within what ever program I'm using to watch a film or play music.

Help please and thanks, Mary

Here is my hijackthis text file.

A:Control/C Control/V control/alter/delete doesn't work

Mary, keyboard problems are not invariably software or malware-related. First things first - what OS are you talking about ? XP, Win 7, Win 8 or what? What type of keyboard is it? PS2, USB or wireless?

Disconnect it and reconnect it a few times, reboot and try again. Turn the keyboard upside down, placing one end on the edge of a thick book, and thump a few times on the back with your hand. Sweep the crud onto the carpet.....

Is it just a keyboard hardware problem, and if so which keys? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/keyboard-shortcuts#keyboard-shortcuts=windows-7 tells you a lot of key combinations with ctrl and shift and alt. Tell us if any or none work?

Open a document and try typing a bit of text. Do all the characters work?

If it appears the keyboard is faulty, can you borrow another to test?

Quite often, keyboard problems are down to wireless problems: and can often be solved by re-installing the keyboard driver.

Hi..Today I had my control panel become unusable, whenever I clicked on anything...it says I basically lost my Admin on my account. I also kept getting this stupid pop up every 10 minutes..so I ran all my programs...ad-aware, spybot, avast, registry cleaner, etc...it got rid of all the viruses, and all the spy-ware...so no more popups, slow internet, etc..thats all gone. The problem I'm having now, is that my control panel is completely gone...and when I type in "control.exe", the error I was getting before comes up...saying I'm restricted from opening it...however, I can open add/remove programs and the system info...

I was reading other posts in these forums, so I downloaded HiJack This...and here is the Log from that:

Do you have a backup that we can restore?

I have windowsXP.. When I went to a site that was for cleaning up viruses, spyware and /or whatever,, it asked to 'extract my files' before doing so , so I clicked on yes.. I had been searching for anything to enable my music in the pc to be heard in a music chatroom in Paltalk.com ..program, which I haven't been able to do. After leaving this PCMightyMax site, I found that my control panel had been extracted or was missing. Now I can't access it no matter what I do. I wanted to get rid of my cookies and temp. files and I'm not sure how to get to it , if I can. With my limited knowlege of the workings of this pc I messed things up. It's been to a repair shop and they did solve a few things and cleaned up problems but still can't get my music played into the paltalk music room or find my control panel, for starters. Hope I've made things clear

hello

I have a HP Compaq nx7010 running Windows XP Home Edition SP2. I was browsing the web searching for a medicine properties and I guess it was when the virus entered my computer. It has been almost 4 weeks now. The virus was a Trojan (Winavxxx or something like that), it appeared as a yellow triangle with "!" sign in the middle resembling windows alerts; alerting me of potential spyware action. Minutes later a pop-up appeared and if I click on it (which I did by mistake, was chatting and hit the enter key when it poped-up) it will re-direct me to a home page which I never used. I also got my homepage changed (hijacked) to google.

I had tried various anti-virus softwares (Norton, AVG, McAfee) and it didn't detect the Trojan nor it avoided its entrance. Now I have Avast!

I have tried many things to kill the virus and work normally. I downloaded SPYNOMORE (by that time I was aware of the Trojan and its big power), I had to re-start my computer and then all got worse.

When I started in Safe Mode, I was not able to see the Control Panel icon anymore.
I tried to uninstall the SPYNOMORE but it didn't let me do it since I was working in Safe Mode. Finally I downloaded SPYBOT SEARCH&DESTROY, and run it. It found many undesirable files and removed them. Same thing with SPYWARE TERMINATOR, it found many problems and claimed it had solved them.

But it did not. The system was still working slow with the same pop ups and yellow triangle when I tried to st... Read more

Hello,
I am running XP on a Dell laptop. Just recently, when I try to open Control Panel, it starts to open, then all of the icons and toolbars on the desktop disapear sor a second, then everything reapears and the Control Panel has not opened. If I reboot, I can get to the Control Panel for one or two tries, the the same as above all over again. This seemed to all start when I was trying to set up a parallel-to-USB printer cable, but that could be coincidental.
I think the laptop has Service Pack 2, but I do not have it in front of me to confirm. Can anyone send me in a direction to start investigating the problem?

Thank you for your help and thanks to all the folks that make this such a great board. I have been "lurking" for a while and have been very impressed with the level of help available.

I'm reading this book and it shows me what the control panel looks like in Windows 8 but I sure can't get to it. My control panel looks just like the one in Windows 7?

A:Control Panel

I'm sure that came from the DP. All that is now under 'More PC Settings' available at the bottom of the screen when you view the Settings charm from the Metro Start screen.

I'm helping my husband with this issue, so I might not have all of the details, however, I'll do my best to describe the problem.
1. It started with a pop-up for Spyware.
2. No Control Panel
3. Disabled Norton
4. Installed Spy Sweeper
5. The pop-up stopped, but Still No Control Panel

I know that this problem has previously been solved for other users, but it appears to require a tech person to check various logs unique to the particular computer to insure that the pc is free of all viruses.

Can you help me?

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Does anybody know what setting I can change so that any user other than administrators can't access or view the control panel?

Sorry, I am running Win2k professional on a network of 4 personal computers at my home. I am interested in making the OS as secure and goof proof as I can. I have family members that like to click on things just to find out what setting they will change. I know that this can be done as it is done on Windows NT at my work.

I found what you were talking about. Unfortunately I am running Win2k Pro. I have found the Gpedit.exe file that allows me to change the settings. I disabled the view of the control panel. Problem is that even the administrator can not view it when logged on. Does anyone know How I can make this possible?

Thanks for your help

switching from 98 view to xp view is not there any more help please

A:Control Panel

I am at a loose. What is it you wish? I will take a guess and guess that you wish to change the vu in Control Panel from classic view to catagory view. When you first open Control Panel on the left there is a window on the top that shows a statement "Swotch to Catagory View" - just left click once and you are there.

I hope I guessed correctly if I did not please post again with the error message or question that you wish answered.

Ok so I did a system restore on my computer a couple of days ago. I'm currently in the process of trying to get all necessary drivers to get my computer up and running again. After doing some research I've found out that apparently the ATI driver is for an AMD graphics card. I purchased this computer and it came with an AMD graphics card but since then I installed an NVidia graphics card and have updated it to the max. So what's up with this error message? Is there something I'm missing?

A:ATI Control Panel

If you do not have an ATI/AMD graphics cards then you need to go to the "Control Panel" then to either "Add & Remove Programs" or "Programs & Features" depending on which version of Windows you have installed and then uninstall the ATI display drivers & control panel.

If you do a system recovery then the recovery puts the computer back to the original state which had an ATI graphics card, it simply doesn't know or care that you have switched out parts since then.
