A Windows optional update has messed up my screen, help

Q: A Windows optional update has messed up my screen, help

This was an option update that i accidently installed without knowing what it was,

Intel Corporation - Display - Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family

It has messed up my resolution and i can no longer fit it to how i want, there are only 2 different screen resolutions i can use. Also, i cannot run applications such as YouCam that came with my Laptop + windows 7 beause i "do not have the VGA software" or something :/

I go to device manager and uninstall this, but everytime i turn on my laptop again, the screen resolution is still messed up and then the driver will install itself again.

I find this really annoying how i cant have my screen resolution back

I really hope someone can help

THanks in advance

A: A Windows optional update has messed up my screen, help

If you're "un-installing" the driver, you could try "rolling back" the driver.

Maybe this will give you the result you need.

You may want to move to the newer driver eventually, so hopefully you can find a more permanent solution.

After you roll it back, hide it from WU

The update is called:
nvidia - Graphics adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Other hardware - NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M.
After installing it, whenever my laptop tries to use the Nvidia card, I get a blue screen and the system restarts.
I looked in installed updates to uninstall it, and it is not there.
I did a system restore to four days before I installed it, and I still get the same effect. Lastly, I installed some older nvidia drivers that used to work using the clean install option, and I still have this problem.

A:Optional update in windows update is giving me a blue screen.

It looks as though the update changed something in nvlddmkm.sys, and for some reason, it wasn't changed back when I did the system restore. I have no idea how to go about fixing it.

So i reinstalled my os(Win7 x64) on my dell e5430 laptop today.
After installed a couple of recommended updates, decided to install 5 optional updates too(not the lang. packs)
4 was something STL protocol/security and 1 was kb3102429 which is the azerbaijani and georgian symbols pack.

Thats when my screen got messed up, I think it could be the resolution/width/fonts or something like that.
When i restarted and tried to login my password instead of 2431 just displayed IIII.
I can't access start menu it wont open, can't access right click/display resolution because it displays instead 1 up/1down little black arrows. Doesn't show the icons. Ctrl+alt+delete doesn't show the icons too only the shut down button, can't restart.
It's basically the Google Chrome which is working and the win help, support from recycle bin.

Tried deleting the kb3102429 update from cmd but when the user account control windows appears i can't read it too(just the red icon and white nothing) can't select yes or no option.

Tried safe mode too, it's the same.

Now that was a long post, and my description is pretty bad i know but i can't describe it better. I would be happy if someone could help me.

Hi Twylo,
as you just re-installed you dont have any other option apart from the system restore point created on installation of your first set of updates.

A year ago, I tried Windows 10 on my SONY Laptop, but had to uninstall it, and reinstalled Windows 7 Home Premium.
Thereafter, I was notified to install an optional update for the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250. Ever since then, I go through days of getting a green video window for Facebook and sometimes youtube videos (but 90% with Facebook videos).
Contacted Facebook but they are useless. Downloaded Flash player many different times, but no luck. Sometimes I can disable hardware acceleration and or check it, however, other times I can not see if hardware acceleration is enabled for HTML5 videos. I have
reinstalled the AMD ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 drivers several times, but the problem still comes and goes for days.

Hello, I'm confused about Windows 8.1 Optional Update. There are 2 updates in optional tab. Should I update those files ? What would happen after I update ? I'm confused because those are not Important updates but Optional.

Here is the screenshot.

Thank You!

A:Windows 8.1 Optional Update

I always do as these are fixes for non-critical problems and will keep your system at optimum performance. I would do KB2962409 first as that was released in June, then do the KB2967917 which is a July update.

I can not locate optional updates downloaded from Windows Update site and "confirmed" as successfully installed. I checked on View installed updates in the Program and Features caption in the Control Panel. The updates that are there are those categorized as Critical, High Priority or Important. The rest of those categorized as Optional are nowhere to be found, though confirmed as successfully installed in the View Update History in the Windows Update site. Can anyone please help.

With the recent advent of MS sending out "tracking updates" for Windows 7 users, I have become leery of any updates including this one which is optional. Not very much info and pretty ambiguous.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3083324

A:Windows Optional Update (KB3083324)

I pretty much hide all optional updates and only do Security Updates. As far as Optional Updates go, I look through each and decide if I really need it. For instance I did not install an optional update regarding the Russian Ruble or Lithuanian currency.

I do not understand what Microsoft is doing with these Windows Update Client updates. KB3075851 was for August and now they are pushing another for September? I update fine and hide these Client updates. I also make sure I check Do not install updates, only notify me and I uncheck Give me Recommended updates the same way I receive important updates.

I opened up and saw the windows update options which included:
- Cumulative security update for IE9 kb2809289 (27Mb) (ticked by default)
- IE10 (69.1Mb) (unticked by default)

Would be ok to untick the ie9 update and tick the ie10 - which would mean that windows update will uninstall ie9 and install ie10?

A:Optional windows update IE10 and IE9

I found out why IE10 update option was unticked by default. It happens to need a platform update installed first which can cause problems. I'll let IE9 be for the meantime.

Due to a problem with BITS I cannot currently download updates using Windows Update. I can download them manually and install them from the Microsoft website. Unfortunately I can only find the required updates but not any of the optional ones. Does anyone know where I can find these? Even if I search for the update number the search comes back empty. Also, if you would like to help with the BITS problem please look at my profile to find the other thread.

Please download the Farbar Service Scanner from

I installed Win7 using a manufacturer disk on top of Vista (not clean install).

After that, I had about 200 important and 80 optional updates to install.

I installed about half of the important and none of the optional.

Now I am installing newer updates and checking which to stay away to prevent Win10. I looked and couldn't find any of the 10 updates in the important update list. I did, however, find some in the optional updates list.

I have been reading a lot how MS installs these win10 updates automatically, but in my case, they are listed as optional. I wonder why, is it because MS changed their policy or because my laptop is pretty old and w10 is not recommended?

Anyways, here is the list of important updates still left to install. Could you more experienced members please take a look and tell me if I should avoid any of these?

Thank you.

A:Windows 10 GWX update KB3035583 listed as optional

None of those are on my list of "to avoid", but that doesn't mean you need them all or that you won't end up in Windows Update hell for whatever reason.

Apparently I already have a version of this on one of my computers because the optional update failed to update and said there was already a version on the computer. I am running Windows 7 upgrade over Vista on this particular machine.

I am having all kinds of permissions problems with this machine and am very disgusted with Microsoft right now and really want as little of their crap software on my machines as possible. Is Windows Live Essentials worth keeping? I don't use it but maybe that is because I don't know what to use it for.

Let me begin by saying that I don't know much about computers.
About a week ago I was having issues with my pc. I finally had the geek squad tech online people fix it. I think that one thing they did was to back up pc. I'm throwing this out there in case someone thinks this may have something to do with my issue.
When Windows 10 first came out I reserved it. I may install it sometime but not right now. I have the Windows icon on desktop and when I click on it and go in it says "theres nothing you need to do right now. You'll get a notification on your pc when windows 10 is ready to install." Also in there it says "Your upgrade is reserved"
I'm wondering why does this optional update (Update to Windows 10 Home) keep trying to install each time I start my pc?
Yesterday it downloaded to the point where a contract looking thing came up and wanted me to either accept or decline something. I did not read the whole thing or click either option. I finally got the download stopped and that was that.
I do not know what to do. If this downloads and install will I have windows 10?
Is it possible that if there was a backup done maybe the powers that be doesn't realize that I already have it reserved?
One more thing. Theres a Windows Defender important update that keeps failing. When I try to manually download it and install it the windows 10 update automatically starts to download. I also have important updates set to automatically download.

Hello,

1) Does optional windows update KB3135445 contain any software for promoting Windows 10, or is it restricted to just making improvements to Windows Update?

2) I understand that in Windows 10 there are reduced option settings for Windows Update, so please would you also confirm that update KB3135445 will make no changes to the options currently available in the Settings options for Windows Update in
Windows 7.

Please do NOT refer me to the Microsoft More Information bulletin for update KB3135445, as I have already read it, as it does not provide the information / confirmation I am seeking in the questions I have put here.

(By the way, the aggressive adware-style approach by Microsoft to promote Windows 10 as an upgrade, in my opinion, is causing its customers to question the trust they have previously placed in Microsoft updates.)

I look forward to receiving answers to the two (numbered) questions I have put above.

I installed this optional Windows Update (a huge mistake I now realize) labled "nVidia - Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3, Graphics Adapter WDDM2.0 - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080", and after restarting the computer, I suddenly lost the aero effects to my computer.

The first thing that I noticed when I started up the computer again was that it had suddenly changed the screen resolution to 800x600 and rearranged my desktop icons, but I was able to put it back to its proper resolution. When I noticed the transparency gone from the explorer bar, I right-clicked on the screen and selected "Personalize" to fix it, only to notice at the bottom the message "Troubleshoot problems with transparency and other Aero effects".

After opening up the troubleshoot to find the problem, there's a message saying:

"Update the drive for your video card.

The current video card may support Aero with a driver that is compliant with the Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM). Contact the manufacturer of your computer or video card for a WDD-compatible driver".

How do I fix, please?

A:Windows 7 optional update suddenly removed aero effects

I did a system restore and now I got it back. :'D

Hello everyone,

I just came to realize the Windows Update window does not show the usual thirty-something available optional updates (last time I checked it was all the language packs and an ATI driver update), only 1 available important update.

Moreover, if I try to select the updates I want to install, the "Optional" tab is completely missing from that window. I haven't hidden any of those updates, nor are they listed as hidden under the appropriate menu.

Have any of you experienced something like this? What should I try to get them back?

Thanks.

PS: I've attached a screenshot of the situation.

PPS: It's been a month or so since I last checked for updates, so I don't exactly know what might've happened that got those updates disabled.

A:Windows Update optional updates (incl. language packs) disappeared

Click on the "View Update history" in the left panel, you might already have installed them.

Also, have you installed the SP1?

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T400 with Windows 7 professional 32-bit. Previously, my login screen would display a "fingerprint logon" option and my username concurrently. I just finished installing an update for the Lenovo fingerprint software using the Lenovo update utility, and now the logon screen will only display the "fingerprint logon" option until I click on "other credentials" or "switch user". I liked my old login screen better and both a system restore and an attempted re-installation of the old software failed to bring it back.

I would like to know if anyone knows a registry hack or something to keep the giant icon of a finger off my login screen (similar to this one: http://www.blogsdna.com/wp-content/u...gin-screen.png), and confined to tiny icons, like these : http://www.blogsdna.com/wp-content/u...windows-xp.jpg with the option of logging on with either a password or the fingerprint reader without any additional clicks.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but it's basically windows 7's fault and I'm trying to get back on it so here goes. Long story short- Windows forces an update, power goes down while it's doing it, everything goes to hell. When I boot normally, I get 2 options- to start windows normally (this one of course is out of question) and to launch repair setup, which requires a windows installation disc from me. The main problem is that my cd/dvd rom doesn't work, and system does not detect pendrive with windows installation as a source for repair (yes, I did make a bootable usb but I honestly have no idea if it's enough). I even came to the point where I am willing to wipe my c: drive, BUT here's another problem. When I try to boot windows installation from usb I get this: at first screen I get a gray loading bar with "windows is preparing files" written below it, then windows loading appears- the one with flashy lights etc. and after that I get a black screen with cursor on it. Nothing happens after that. I tried with multiple versions of windows iso, and everytime it's the same story. I am thinking about installing ubuntu on top of everything and try to do something from there, but I am not this good with computers and don't want to mess things up even more. Help me pc masters, you're my only hope

I just got home and when I turned it on... it finished the updates.  If any messages popped up temporarily I missed it... but when I came back and windows was finished loading... wow... nothing was there that should have been and the background was different... then something popped up in the tray saying I was logged into a temporary account and I could try logging out and in again.  Not sure what that was about but... okay.
So, I logged back into my normal account and
It was back to normal but a bunch of icons were gone from the desktop...  I shut it down and restarted... they're still gone.  More than half a dozen.  I don't remember what they all were...  I know the recycle bin is one but I have that up in a dock anyway...  I checked in the recycle bin, they're not there.
The rest would have been program shortcuts and/or actual files saved to the desktop.
What in the world happened that I lost icons?  And possibly files?
I wish I could remember what files they were.
I went into the update history and everything shows "Successful"

Previously I had a problem where my trackpad could not be used while using the keyboard, in this thread the problem was solved: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-B-and-G-Series-Notebooks/G51-35-Getting-Touchpad-to-Work-while-T... However, with the latest Windows 10 update it seems to have broken it. Basically the fix was editing registry entries for my trackpad, and after the windows update, I reinstalled the latest Elan driver, and reset the registry entries to what they were before, but it still didn't work. I tried rolling back my driver to an older one, but that just flat out didn't work, windows came up with an error whenever I tried to use my trackpad. So basically, is there any fix so I can use my trackpad and the keyboard at the same time? If need be I am fine using a generic windows driver (which seems to work) but I don't know how to keep windows ten from automatically updating the driver for me. It wouldn't start properly so I did a system restore.  That was the beginning of all my problems.  I have to do a restore EVERY time I start it.  At first it was running okay but I couldn't print with it.  After trying to print, unsuccessfully several times, a window popped up saying my computer encountered a problem and would have to restart.  When it restarted the window for my login came up, I logged in and after several moments it was like the monitor was just turned off.  The harddrive light was still flickering leading me to think it was loading up but the monitor wasn't working.  I hooked up an external monitor to see what was going on and all I got was a dark screen and the cursor, which I could move but I just couldn't do anything.  No right clicking or getting anything else to come up.  I could Ctrl-Alt-Delete but when I select task manager the box just disappears like nothing was selected.

If it hadn't been for one little addition to the "Windows encountered a problem" pop up, which was "bad pool caller" I would probably still be at it! I deleted the printer and uninstalled it from the programs, then plugged it in and let it re-install itself and I haven't had any problems since

The "bad pool caller" isn't necessarily a printer problem but I noticed after every system restore the only time I had to restore it again was after trying to get my printer to print something, which it wouldn't do.  So thanks for all of you who looked.  Makes me feel not so dumb since no one else could figure it out either

When i woke up seven hours later, the computer is still trying to congigure the updates, i turn it off, and nothing has worked right since.
Everytime i log on i get one of four things. 1. It wont go past the welcome screen. 2. it will get past the welcome screen and then have a black screen for which i can do nothing about. 3. It will get past everything but then have an all black screen with the words in the bottom right saying "This copy of windows is not genuine build 7601 or 4. it will be like normal but i cant click on anything, it will highlight things but when you click on it nothing starts.
I have a gateway computer bought straight from best buy, nothing has been done to it, it has worked perfectly since last christmas of 2010.

I currently run vista 64 bit SP1....

I was going to reboot my computer and saw the windows update sign...so i decided to update my computer as well... when windows finished updating and reloading... it would work for the first minute or so then it would freeze.. not literally freeze... but nothing will work and the mouse icon would be stuck in that loading symbol...(the little blue circle)

At first I figured I would just let it finish loading whatever the computers trying to load... but 30 mins later its still stuck on loading... I did a hard reboot, and the same thing would happen... 30 secs - 1 min into loading windows it would just freeze on whatever its doing...

So I figured the windows update screwed up my computer... I loaded up safe mode and tried to do a system restore only to find out that my computers system restore was turned off!!!???... so now I have no idea what to do.. someone please help I have a lot of work to do... thanks in advance

off the top of my head here are my computer specs:

Intel Core i7 940

NVIDIA FX 1700

Suggest in Safe Mode go to Windows Update and uninstall all updates from the date your problem started. Then check web for each update you removed to see if anyone else has experienced the same issue.
Turn on System Restore but be careful not to let the Restore Points build up otherwise you'll find HDD space apparently disappearing.

I'm using windows vista 32bit and have just installed quite a lot of updates from windows update which I've never done before. Once they had been installed I restarted the computer and now when I try to open anything such as IE, publisher, media player, msn etc it says The application failed to intialize properly.

Also I cant watch videos on youtube because it says I either have java script turned off, or I need the latest flash player which I already have.

Not sure how windows update could do this but would greatly appreciate any help.

Okay I tried to explain as much as I could in the title to show how it relates to XP LOL. I had no clue where to post this at so I hope this is right!!
Here is the story....

My computer worked fine...
The drives were fine...
Did a windows update one morning.
And now the drives wont open.
If I force them open with the paperclip trick, they work.
Eject doesnt work.
Claims the drivers are all normal.
Nothing was forced in it, there were no disks & From what I see I am not the only one with this problem..

We have been googling for a few days now to try & Figure this out ourselves to no avail.

What else can I tell you? I am running Windows XP sp2 (or was. now it is sp3) I tried to restore to a previous place but it didnt work. When I tried to restore before the update it told me I cant.

NOW The part where the "I did not rough handle my drives" Comes in..

My husband had an update this morning & Now his doesnt work either.

His is a Built PC (he built it ) And it worked great until now... the drives dont work.
His pc is an XP Sp3.. (installed as a SP3)
SO Any ideas???
TY so much in advance! If you need more info on either of our PCs please ask!! :-)

When I shutdown my computer, it was installing 7 updates. Updates 1 through to 6 installed fine. But 7 lasted all night and when I woke up from bed, I held the power button and turned it off. I then turned it back on and it is VERY slow. It froze completely one time, the mouse didn't even move and the time didn't change. Another attempt to turn it on and windows explorer freezes, I pressed Ctrl+Alt+Delete and that crashed too somehow. Internet won't load and says that it's not connected when I actually went on the internet, I can't load video's, or anything. Windows gadgets won't start or according to task manager, turn off! All because of this update! What is going on!!!

I just recently received my last Windows update and with it, I had an optional update for my NVIDIA GForce 8400....so, I thought "cool", and went ahead and downloaded/installed it through Windows. Never had issues before doing it that way until now. I have my monitors set (obviously within Windows) to power-off after 10 minutes. However, when it comes back from that status (i.e. move the mouse, hit a key, etc.) it freezes for a sec, goes black AGAIN, and then brings the desktop BACK up again, this time giving me the message I attached below in a .jpg.

Anyone with the same hardware or driver set experiencing this same bug?

There have been a lot of problems reported the last few months where Windows Update is very slow and takes a long time.
I just checked my W7 Updates and a new update KB3102810 was published yesterday (2015-11-03)
This update might help fix this, but it also includes a fix for updating to Win 10.

Read more here:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3102810

I also get the "same update" offered for W8.1 as KB3102812 described here:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3102812

A:New optional update

I promptly hid KB3102810 and another optional one when they came through recently; I still have two important ones from yesterday pending (KB2758857 and KB3067904); I'm waiting to see if anyone reports problems or not. I haven't had any trouble with windows updates taking too long to do its thing and I don't need a fix for updating to Win 10 because that simply isn't going to happen. In fact, I suspect the ones who have been having trouble with updates also have the Win 10 nagware, etc. installed, which I do not.

Advanced micro devices,inc-Graphics adapter wddm1.2-amd Radeon HD 6310 Graphics is this update important? I found it on my update list so I was just wondering if its okay to update also, what does this update do?

A:Optional Update

It is clearly an 'update' for the device driver for your graphics adapter, but I do not know what in particular that update fixes or improves about it.

Device drivers are small pieces of software that are the link between Windows and the various pieces of hardware on the computer. If Windows or wants to draw something on the screen, it gets the device driver for your graphics adapter to do it.. Device drivers are specific to the exact model of hardware that they are designed for, and sometimes to that hardware being used on a particular model of computer.

I am a bit wary about accepting device driver updates from Microsoft updates, but do not ignore them. In particular, I would think carefully about this one, and ensure that the update matches the driver already installed on your system. My reasoning being that device drivers can be issued through four different channels (each subtly different).

The Manufacturer of your computer. If you have let's say a "Bloggs model X1000" laptop - The most appropriate driver updates might well come from "Bloggs" themselves... They will know how best to use that model of graphics adapter in their system, and might have modified the drivers (or include specific support software) that they supply to best match their system.

I opened Windows Update and only listed was an optional update. I didn't update at that time and when I went back to update I could not find the optional update. Ihave Windows 7 Home premium 64 Bit. I looked for updates again but it said everything was up to date. How can I find that update.. I'm not really good with computers any help will be greatly appreciated. I have one other question if you don't mind.

I have to Unzip a ZIP-file with WinZip and save the content to my hard
drive. Then use the unzipped EXE-file to run a program. This sound simple enough, I guess, if you know what you are doing. Where can I get this WinZip program that will run on Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit.

One other question. A program that I want to install supports Windows 7 64 bit in 32-bit emulation mode. What does that mean and how do I run this program.

Thanks again for all your help and cooperation. Have a good evening.

A:Optional Update

Welcome rottikid,

For the update it was probably for MSE if that's your Anti-Virus, You could just look at Installed updates and see if it is there.

As for WinZip you can get it here WinZip - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com There might be something else you can use too, someone else might know more about that.

Usually people will download a zipped file to their desktop or downloads area by clicking save instead of run when prompted. (see Below)

And for the 32 bit emulation I don't know the technical answer but 64 bit windows has 2 sets of programs files, Program Files (64bit) and Program Filesx86 (32bit).

Hope that helps you out some.

Hello SpeedDial,

No, you do not have to. It's just to let you know that there is a new optional driver version update. If you do not want to install it, then you can hide it to not see it anymore in Windows Update. However, you might give it a try since it is a new version that may help improve your graphic card's performance. If not, you can always rollback to the previous driver version.

Hope this helps,

A:Optional Update - not sure what it is ?

This is an update to your NVidia graphics card drivers, etc. It is optional because it is not necessarily required.

I personally always go to the manufacturer's (NVidia in this case) support site and get the latest drivers from there if I feel I need to update them.

Hi all,

I'm about at my wit's end with this so hopefully someone can shed a little light on it.

Last week, Windows Update installed a new update, and all of a sudden, the gamma on my monitor was much brighter than what I had been working with. The color settings on my computer are critical to my work, so even just a small gamma change is not something I can live with. I went into the Nvidia control panel to try to change it back, but every time I would try to make any alteration, it would reset back to the messed up setting. This is even before I ever hit Apply. I would make a change and *immediately* it would revert back to the messed up settings. The exact same thing happened whenever I'd try to alter the color settings through the Windows Control Panel. I tried altering the color using the monitor settings but that just doesn't even come close to having the same effect as the software.

The next day Nvidia came out with a driver update and then everything went back to normal. Then the very next day after that Windows came out with another update and I was back to my messed up settings.

I've been scouring the internet and there appears to be a history of Nvidia/Windows 10 Updates issues, but none of the solutions thus far have worked for me. I've completely uninstalled everything Nvidia. I've uninstalled the most recent two Windows Updates, but I'm still not able to get my color settings back and my patience is starting to wear thin. I feel like the only thing I haven't ... Read more

Last night my computer had received a pretty big update. Like an hour long one. Since this update my headphones have not worked properly with the computer. They work fine with other devices (my phone and a different computer).

Here is what I know. The headphones do not appear in playback devices. I tried selecting for it to show disabled devices and disconnected devices, they do not appear. The computer only shows the default speakers as the only option.

But here is the weird part. Sound is still playing through my headphones and not the speakers. The issue is that the sound is off. It doesn't sound right. Its echo-ish and just strange. So I know that there is an issue.

I've tried restoring the advanced settings to default. It didn't work.

I've tried updating all audio and software related drivers. It didn't work.

I'm not sure what the update did to my computer but it's caused my computer to no longer let headphones function properly.

Solution: Go to settings and go to Realtek HD Audio Manager. There should be a check box saying "Full Range Speakers." Deselect it.

There was an optional Windows Update today to remove GWX.

Someone mentioned online months ago that adding 'old' to the GWX folder stopped it from popping up messages, which is what I did and it seemed to work.

I have now installed the optional update to remove all trace of GWX, restarted, but the GWX folder is still there.

I'm thinking that because it had 'old' at the end of it, it was not removed?

I tried deleting the GWX folder, but I was denied permission to do so.

I could not do a pc refresh or pc reset using advanced boot up options nor a system restore...nor Macrium Reflect from a external hard drive...partition missing...i did not delete anything..

Spent about an hour to try and sort the problem out with no luck...so i had no choice but to buy another pc.

This is the biggest problem with Windows 10 update...you cannot choose to select what updates to download...as far i as know you cannot stop any update from installing.

Note: this problem has already happened twice

The problem: I boot up my PC, the MSI intro screen (where memory scan is performed invisibly in the background) shows up fine, Windows XP boot screen shows up fine. Then when WinXP loads, the whole screen is messed up. By messed up, I mean it's just tiles after tiles of colours (think what happens when you degauss your screen and it stays there forever, with all the weird patterns tiling up. Looks like a really messed up tiled Windows wallpaper). I rebooted PC, still had the same problem. You could hear the Windows greeting sound, but no mouse cursor shown on screen, and the screen's full of that tiled crap

I shut down my PC, disconnected my graphics card and reconnected it. It worked fine after that. At first I thought it could be because the golden connectors were loose, but it happened again when I was very sure the card was secured in place

IS it possible my card's dying?

The critical and hardware Microsoft Updates are very necessary. Silverlight enhances some Internet video playback. I view Netflix streaming video. Without installing Silverlight, I couldn't do this viewing. If you use Windows Live, Silverlight is necessary for those features, When you upgraded to Windows 7 over Vista, you should have backed up your files and deleted the Vista partition on the hard drive at the start of the Windows 7 install

Was it actually unlockforus, or just a similar pop up ?Those are very sketchy details. Was it a torrent video, a specific video, a porn video, or don't you remember what you were even watching ??If you are concerned about it being an infection, maybe you could post in the Am I Infected area of the forum.

I have two computers in the house on 8.1. I noticed yesterday that on one computer, a certain update was listed as optional, while on the other computer it was listed as important (ftr it was update 3132080). This is not the first time I've noticed that an update is listed differently on the two computers. Anyone know why this is? There really isn't much difference in the setup between the two computers.

This is getting ridiculous !!!

From July 12th to today 29th, I had installed a total of 33 optional updates entirely about MSE. ( I use manual update method )

I am think of going back to Avast free edition !!! This MSE optional Update is B.S.

A:MSE optional update - just ranting. It's not a problem.

They average 2-3 a day so you may have even missed some.

I have mine set to run a quick scan everyday with "Check for ther latest virus and spyware definitions before running a scheduled scan" selected. So it updates automatically every day, but only once a day when the scan runs. So I suppose I'm missing at least one update each day but they are cumulative and for me it works fine.

I could probably get at least one additional update by adjusting the time I run the quick scan but I know that the way MSE auto updates is a bit odd. When I first was using it I let it install it's own updates without running a scan and it was kind of strange how it did it so I went with to quick scan everyday option. Works for me.

Hello, I just got on my laptop like normally and randomly a window popped up saying "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting." This scared me half to death because I have no idea what to do about it. I checked other forums about it on several different sites, some saying it's a virus such as ransomware and others saying it is legit.
Here is what the alert looks like: http://www.kodyaz.com/images/windows-7/you-may-be-a-victim-of-software-counterfeiting.PNG
I have no idea how to fix this problem; any help would be greatly appreciated,

An optional update for the Dell ST2210 was recently issued, but I can find no actual description of the update's purpose. I have googled. I have also registered and attempted to ask in the Dell Community, but without success, for I cannot work out how one does post there.

I hope someone can help me to where full descriptions of such updates are to be found, and also perhaps with the other problem.

After making the terrible mistake of upgrading to 8.1, the resolution of almost all my programs are messed up. They look very blurry, as if they're being stretched or something. I'm using a Lenovo Ideapad Y510P with screen resolution 1920x1080. The only method to correct this, that I found so far, is to go to every single .exe's properties and disable "disable display scaling on high DPI settings". Yes I know I can go to control panel and set a resolution for all programs at 100%, but that will make the text on the programs way too tiny (including Windows UI, like icons, start menu, etc) that they're barely readable, way smaller than Windows 8.0's size. The correct size for the UI is supposed to be about 125% scaling, comparing to Windows 8.0, which is a size I'm comfortable with. But if I set the scaling in display options to 125%, then all my programs will be blurred again.
Does anyone know how I can fix this? It's getting really frustrating.

This update is now appearing as optional update available on my pc's. Any problems with this? I am running scared about installing "optional" updates since the last two month's fiascos. KB2975719 is correct number - sorry for mispost originally . For now, I have just "hidden" this update - afraid to try to install it.....lol. Microsoft has gone completely berserk with Windows Updates, it seems.

So, okay, an optional update showed up this morning to remove some broken Lenovo software: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/3107998

But this machine I'm typing at is an ancient-ASUS-motherboard machine, not a Lenovo.

Now, in this house there IS a Lenovo laptop (that has yet to be updated, probably, since it's early morning and my daughter carried it into her room so I can't yet get to it...).

Did Microsoft distribute this "Lenovo Fix" optional update to regular nonLenovo PC users?

Or did Microsoft get their database(s) confused and think this aAm machine is a Lenovo machine?

Or what?

OK I am a moderate security guy trying to learn more from the REAL Security PROs. I was looking for server 2012 Installing and Configuring study material FOR FREE of course and got in a little to deep. I use Zone alarm firewall Free version and Malwarebytes religiously. As well as MSE as my regular day to day antivirus. Now normally I would not dig as deep as I did this time to get so ROOTKIT infected.
Recently I ran GMER and found a lot of RED in the registry; Files and other important places so I figured I need to reimage my machine......! I also ran Kaspersky's TDSSKiller and it came back clean?? I will attach the Kaspersky log below... Now I also use CMS Product Ultimate BounceBack version 11.4.0.29, I believe so I can make all this go away with a backup reimage. But I am pursuing my Server 2012 MCSA and eventually want to become Security focused. So I have all the Rootkit tools and have played with them in the past but in my experience it has always been best to completely reinstall the OS version, Whatever the OS may be at the time, and move forward because otherwise you are never going to completely clean the machine. Not to mention, the time saved by doing this speaks for itself. All that being said I would still like to get a better understanding of this from a Security standpoint..... Yes, that's why it's there. HijackThis has not been seriously updated in some time and so is not considered worth the hard drive space, although I suppose that it acts as cheap advertising for Trend Micro.

I installed a fresh Windows 7 x64 to my new pc. Everything went fine from the start.
My pc has really powerful cpu and gpu and dozen gb's of ram and is running on ssd drive.

After the Windows was installed I plugged it to the network. It found an update for the Windows Update Agent and after that was installed it installed something like a hundred updates (not sure how many there were).
After that everything was ok for some time (for several reboots).

Later on the install day something very strange happened.
- All the icons on the Explorer disappeared and after a few seconds they reappeared again, huh?
- None of the Libraries links works now (I can still go to the folder directly with explorer)
- Control Panel: User Accounts -> changed to User Accounts (32bit) <- and that link gives an error code
- System Restore is not able to restore to any point

Was someone remotely hacking to my pc or what did happen?

A:New Windows 7 install and new Windows Update messed my OS

Lets cross of the list of possible virus, so give this a go:

Do a full scan of your system using: Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows

Afterwards: Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download

If nothing pops up for both of those,

try: Windows Defender Offline

And no, it's not just that theme! Another theme is messed up the same way. I tried deleting and re adding one of the themes, no luck.

this is a work computer, so I'll only be around 10a-5:30p EST.  "Computer guy" came about 6 weeks ago, ran Combofix, left.  After that, I  noticed that Conduit hijaked the browsers.  Uninstalled what toolbars I could find, changed settings in IE and Chrome, seemed to be gone. Still no symptoms.  Last week I saw the unsupported or unfound file image in the shortcuts next to the start menu, ran MBAM again, found this, deleted. ran other scans in safe mode w/networking, seemed clean.  Ran a scan just because today, no symptoms, 45 objects found.  Deleted again.  ran TDSS, found a partition. Don't know enough to comfortably delete.  Here's the DDS log.  I hope you can help quickly. My boss wants me to call the "computer guy" again, who I have no faith in, because every time we pay him to "fix it" I end up having to come here and get help because he doesn't actually fix anything, but still cashes the checks.

I just successfully upgraded my mom's XP machine to Win 8.1 cause of Microsoft's end-of-support for the old OS. It took the best part of a day backing up her files, installing and activating and then setting up new software on the new OS. It's not something I'd want to do again in a hurry and I'm a little concerned about this new update which I've just heard about. All this business of upgrading and updating is time consuming and stressful to me! I've set her updates to the recommended automatic setting, so what I want to know is: Will the update hijack her machine and install itself without warning once it becomes available or will it be an optional one that we can initiate ourselves? I'd rather it'd be the latter to be honest. She works from her home on her PC so any surprise down time while the patch installs is not desirable. The original 8 to 8.1 update on my own PC , took ages with several reboots so I'm kind of apprehensive about this new one.

A:Will 8.1 update 1 be an optional update?

Hello Nalydyenlo,

No worries. The "Windows 8.1 Update" will just be a Windows Update. You're not going to need to reinstall Windows.

So I'm having some problems with Windows Update...this is my parent's computer and I do scan regularly with Avast and Malwarebytes- no threats.

I go to update Windows Updates and it just stays on the loading screen...with 0% progress....however...from time to time I notice when I go to shut down the computer I get one of those icons on my shut down button that you sometimes get from updates so I don't know what's going on...I get that icon and at shut down it says updates 1 of 1 are installing do not turn off your computer, but then after reboot when I go back to Windows Updates it's now 1 less, so I had 14 updates now I have 11 but I still never saw the progress bar! nothing! there was no indication that updates were being installed it was always at 0% I waited over 5 hours- almost all day.

I'm just confused, and now it's saying I have 10 updates and again it's just stuck at the loading screen, no progress..
can anyone help me out with this?

My dad said he also noticed the computer running a bit slow/ even boot up is slow.

Also, Java, I cannot get it to install, I get the pop up window in my taskbar to install updates but when I click it nothing happens, this I have problems with even on my personal laptop, I can't ever seem to install Java updates because it won't open! what is going on...with this program..

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, after I updated my Windows 7 (x64) sytem to SP1, Windows Update doesn't show any text, just the images (you can see a screenshot in the attachments)

Also, when I opened msconfig.exe and navigated to the services tab, I din't see the Windows Update Service.

Thanks in Advance, Sorry for not posting in the right section, Im new here.

A:Windows Update Screen with no text after SP1 Update

Type services.msc in the start search bar, click on the icon. Scroll down wo Windows Update and make sure it's started. Set it to automatic or manual, as you see fit.

So I turned off my computer today with shutdown and install new updates. This was the last thing I could do before my computer now won't start.

When I then restarted my computer I got to the screen where you log on to your windows with password. There was no box to input my password and then my screen started to blink. I restarted and the same thing happened. I tried starting my computer in safe mode, but the same thing kept happening. I tried to startup repair and recovery from a selected date but this did not work: startrep.exe stopped working and got error messages that it couldnt find files to go back on (somthing about it not finding the files on a spesific adress).

So now i am stuck with an unfixable computer, and I really dont want to wipe it either, nor do i know much about the recovery disk or how to make one.

I did some research on the forums but I did not find a solution exept for wipe. I hope someone knows somthing more than me and is able to help and fix my problem

My Sunday morning update has caused IE8 not to work properly, links in particular. AOL has an issue as well. I restarted several times...installed Mozilla just to get Internet access. Yesterday the printer won't print out of Outlook. Can i rollback my computer to Saturday?

A:UPDATE HAS MESSED UP MY COMPUTER

If you are certain the Windows Update is the cause you can do one of two things:

System Restore
or
Uninstall the Update

I posted a thread on the forums earlier, about my keyboard not working during boot, well, it was because the mouse (Razer Copperhead) was connected to my keyboard USB hub (Logitech G15), when I attached it to the back of my PC, I could use it again.

But now there's another problem, I can't connect my keyboard or mouse to another slot than the ones they are in now, when I connected the mouse to another USB port, it wouldn't work, then I put it back in my keyboard, and it worked again. Same for my keyboard that doesn't work when I plug it in another USB Slot.

Microsoft says it's because of update KB937287 which messes up the USB system, now it's impossible to uninstall that update because it was an update prior to SP1. (Didn't notice that the other slots don't work for keyboard and mouse for a month)

Does anyone else have this problem? And is there a solution for it?

Hi Axon,
If I read this correctly sounds like yo did not try to plug in usb hub to a differnt usb port then plug in mouse/keyboard to usb hub? Not sure how to uninstall that update. Sorry
