Windows 7 "changed highest screen resolution" WTF?

Q: Windows 7 "changed highest screen resolution" WTF?

Alright, so I was trying to fix something earlier. Something for my iPod. And then to finish the settings they told me to reboot my computer. I did. When it came back up, my screen had "shifted' or "changed the maximum resolution". I don't know what caused this (maybe windows update?) or why it happened. All I know is that my default, and my recommended resolution for my laptop is 1366x768. When I had rebooted my laptop, it says that the default, and recommended maximum screen resolution is 1280x800. I'll post a picture below.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE that this is EXACTLY what the screen looks like from my POV. Yes, even the taskbar looks like that. Also, I edited in the black bar on the right side because it exists there for some reason. My mouse pointer can't go there though. The black bar on the top just indicates that my wallpaper doesn't fit completely.

Can I please have some help on how to fix this? (I've tried shutting down, and restarting too)

This problem started happening about a week ago and I've never had a problem like this before. The problem is that often (but not always) when I start a game, it goes into full screen and it will usually change the resolution like mosts games do, except when I either exit the game normally, or alt+tab out of it, the resolution does not change back to normal. I have my desktop resolution set at 1024x768 normally. This seems to hold true for almost all my games. Even the windows screensaver causes the same problem if it changes the resolution.

After this happens, if I go into display properties and try to change any settings whether it is resolutuon, color depth, or even the refresh rate. I get an error that says it can't be done and I probably don't have administrative rights. The only way to fix it is to reboot the computer.

My graphics card is a Nvidia GeForce4 MX 420. Around when the probelms started I updated the drivers to some beta drivers from the Nvidia site. I assumed those might be the cause so I downgraded to the latest official foreceware drivers which I had installed before. The only other things I can think of that I have installed before the problem occoured was the new Microsoft Anti-spyware but I doubt that would have caused it.

Does anyone have any idea what is causing this problem? I am out of ideas...

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I installed Windows 10 and found some apps did not fit the monitor screen (too big). I went in and changed the monitor resolution to a larger size (windows recommended 1920 x 1080) but I tried something larger, and now the monitor has a black screen with a little box moving around which says "input not supported". Not being able to use that monitor to go in and change it back, I hooked up a flat screen t.v. which worked but Windows only showed the current monitor size (which was smaller than the original monitor. I tried the monitor on another computer I have also running Windows 10 and it worked fine. It shows the resolution as 1920 x 1080. When I plugged it back into the original computer I get the same plack screen with "input not supported" so I can't change it there. I suspect the issue is with the registry somewhere in Windows 10 on the first computer, but I have no idea really what the problem is. I've been working on this for a whole day now. You can probably tell I'm not well versed in computer technology. I just want my old monitor back (Acer K272HL) and I promise I won't mess around with it again. Does anyone know how to help me?

Hey. I recently reformatted my hard drive. Although I have a Dell XPS laptop, I didn't have the disc and reformatted it using my friend's Dell Inspiron disc. We did, however, log into my account on the Dell site and we installed the drivers that originally came with my system.

Everything seems to be fine, except for two problems... (1) the screen resolution feels "squished", like the dimensions aren't right, and (2) when I go to shut down, the option to stand by is greyed out.

Any thoughts?

A:"stand by" option greyed out / screen resolution squished

This seems like your video card drivers aren't installed correctly. I would double check what model video card you have. Go to the Dell site and plug in your Service Tag #. That should pull up what drivers you need to load. If the video drivers aren't loaded correctly it may very well cause the standby/hibernate function to not work.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

Hello, ill try to be as detailed as possible hopefully this makes sense.
I was fooling around on the microsoft office programs , right clicking/properties, and checkmarking the "run in 256 colors" and "run in 640 x 480 screen resolution" etc.... then after clicking them off, my Windoes 7 theme went to the crappy old grey and black borders.... the real problem is when i Go to control panel/ appearance and personalization/personalization and the page with the themes pop up...... I am able to use the transparency features but when I click on, "window" color near the bottom then "advanced appearance settings" then the picture attached will describe the window is showing the old version... i feel as if there is a compatability issue somewhere causing this problem... i went back to the microsoft office files to make sure everything was clicked off etc. and even deleted the microsoft folder but the problem still consists. any help on when i can do?

Hi, I need to find a fix for this issue I have with a change in Windows 8. I am running Windows 8 Pro and normally (in windows 7 and older) when I Right click on a folder, the default option for properties is "r". Nice and quick and next to my
left hand which rests on the left side of the keyboard. Now it has changed to "o" and not only that, there are 2 options for "o". Open and Properties. Very frustrating and not very easy to get around. Any way of getting around this whether
it be alternative software or reg hack or something... anything. Itsvery annoying.

A:Right Click on folder and select "R" for Properties has changed to "O"

Well it looks like the US version oif the upgrade iso/cd is the version that has the r has properties. UK version is O which really doesnt make sense as open is O aswell so you have to press it twice then enter. I like my keyboard shortcuts so US version
is. Problem solved. language to install must read US (English) on the install screen.

Ok, this my second problem with my recently reformatted Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop with Windows Vista Basic installed.

After I reinstalled Vista, my monitor seemed ridiculously zoomed in. I right clicked my Desktop and went to Personalize -> Display Settings and adjusted the Resolution slider so it was as far to the right as possible. It zoomed out quite a bit, but it's still not as far zoomed out as it was before I reinstalled Vista. Everything seems much fatter and it seems like I can't fit very much on my screen. I would like to know how do i get the all screen pane again, i like it a lot more.
I hope i've been clear enough.
Can someone assist me? Thanks.

A:Mouse Middle Button changed it's "show open windows" function

Hello Tomas, and welcome to Seven Forums.

What is the brand and model of your mouse? If we know which one you have, then someone with the same one will be able to help better.

For now, click on the Mouse icon in the Control Panel (icons view) to see if you may have a Settings type tab like in the screenshot below. This will vary depening on what brand you have, and if you installed the mouse's drivers/software.
I have a Logitech mouse, so I get this when I click on my SetPoint Settings tab. From here, I can change what the middle button function will be. This is brand specific though.
Hope this helps for now,

Hello everyone.

I have had this problem intermittently ever since I got this computer three years ago. It seems whenever I use my undocked laptop, and then dock it and use my external 1920x1080 monitor, it flickers quite a bit. The only solutions thus far have been to 1) reduce the resolution 2) restart 3) make sure my laptop isn't asleep when I dock it, as the problem seems to only happen when it is undocked, put on sleep, and then woken up. These are all obnoxious solutions, so I was wondering if anyone here had any ideas?!
Thanks in advance for your help.

I have stumble upon a strange problem when my Monitor is off, Windows back to default 1024x768 resolution, when i turn on the monitor, resolution is OK, but windows positions and sizes are messed up from the previous resolution.

This is happening because some monitors power off completely and don't send signal to the PC so Windows is changing to "simulated" monitor with the default resolution of 1024x768 pixels.

While there is some fixes for older Windows versions, nothing have seems to work for Windows 10. So here is a tutorial on how to change the default 1024x768 resolution in Windows 10:

1. Open "Regedit" and navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Configuration\SIMULATED_10DE_13 C2_00000001_00000000_1300^6C7185C1F893FF6C2863DDD8BF5E4ABF\00"

2. Change the "" and "" to your desired values of resolution. Note that it must be changed in "demicial"

3. Then go to the second "00" and change "DwmClipBox.bottom" and "DwmClipBox.right", "" and "", "" and ""

4. That's it, now your windows sizes and positions won't bug when you turn off the monitor.

When I turned off my laptop yesterday evening the only thing I changed that day was a new automatic update of Firefox.

This morning my computer settings are all gone and two new users were created.
Not really new users - just two new folders appeared in Windows Explorer - name of my user name ("pc") and then additional: pc.PC-WO0373K371MS.000 and .001.

Outlook Express and Firefox and also several other programs are behaving as if they were just new installed - all my settings are gone (email connection, bookmarks, Firefox remembered passwords, OE folders+emails...).

I seem to remember that I had the same problem after the last automatic Firefox update and that I at that time painstakingly did change everything from scratch (localizing my lost OE folders+emails and import them etc.etc.etc.) but now I am really annoyed and think there might be an easier way to get my settings back?

System Restore did not work since I had never heard of it before and so I discovered that it was disabled...

Can somebody help?

I am running Windows 8 64 bit

Apparently I scanned my system using full system scan (AVAST) and left my computer on thinking it would take for many hours. When I came back, my computer automatically shutdown because it was left standby for about 4 hours. I don't know if the scan was finished. When I try to boot, the screen gets stuck on "please wait" screen or "configuring windows. Do not turn off your computer".

I already tried going to System Recovery Options screen, then going to Troubleshoot, then Advanced Options, but I tried everything there and still the issue persists even when I tried to boot in safe mode. I tried going to command prompt, and type sfc/ scannow but it says it can't scan right now. I also tried chkdsk / R but it says the same. I don't know how to run cmd as administrator from the System Recovery Options.

So now I tried to use system restore but I am stuck to the windows logo for about 1 and half hour. I don't know if I should wait for this or it is already stuck. In other forums I read, they used system restore with only the "C:" disk group connected. Should I also do this?

I am thinking to remove AVAST or somehow disable it.

Please help me.

So I'm kind of stuck.. I currently have the problem where I am in an endless cycle of "loading files" -> "Windows Boot Manager" (see: How To Boot Into Safe Mode On Windows 8 (The Easy Way)).
I have tried to load all of the options -- and none successfully load.
I also end up at a OneKey Recovery as well.. unfortunately, the laptop does not have initial backup or user backup images.
I have a Windows 8 CD for repairing purposes.. however, I cannot load the BIOS/UEFI to change the boot order to load the optical drives first. I have also tried to remove the CMOS battery to fix it.. did not work. .
Also - Windows Boot Manager:
Windows Setup [EMS Enabled] -- does not load properly (leads to OneKey Recovery) Safe Mode (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Networking (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Command Prompt (doesn't load - tries to boot and load all files onto partition that is too small.. can't change partition?)

I was having problems with RDPing to my Win7 clients so I checked that remote desktop was enabled.  When doing so I saw that it informed me that I had to allow rdp access in the firewall which I know had been done before.  After looking around I realized that my network profile had been changed to "Public".  I also noticed that my active network shows as "unauthenticated".  What does this mean and how can I fix this?  How did this happen?  Thanks.

I don't know if this problem is just for the Swedish market or all markets...

I work for a company that sells air conditioning units. On our network we have a folder with several hundred of subfolders containing documentation for all the units. If a document can be used for more than one machine, the pdf-file is placed in a main folder, and I create shortcuts to that pdf in the appropriate folders.

When I had XP a file that was a shortcut was automatically named
Genv?g till xxxxx.pdf

Now when I create a shortcut it is named:
xxxxxx.pdf - genv?g

I have several thousand shortcuts named in XP. They are easy to see as they all are together (at G in alphabetical order). So now I have to manually re-name all the shortcuts I am creating!! PANIC! The Windows 7 version is not an option, too easy to miss it's a shortcut (people mailing shortcuts to customers are not popular....).

What were they thinking of??? Is there a way that I can tell Windows 7 to please continue to name my shortcuts as before? Or do I have to use my valuable time with renaming files when I make the shortcuts? Seems unnecessary!

Please if somebody could help me!

"Warning! Spyware detected on your computer! Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer."

There are no icons visible. The only action I can perform is CTL-ALT-DEL to bring up the Windows Task Manager. I told my brother to start in Safe Mode from which he scanned the computer using AVG Free Edition which was installed before the infection. This did not fix the problem.

Starting Safe Mode I now get a black screen with Safe Mode in the corners and the operating system name at top. The blue login screen then comes up with Administrator and my brothers account. I click on Administrator and I get the same black screen as before with Safe Mode in the corners and the writing at top. My brothers account does the same. There are no icons or Start button visible.

Again, the only program I can bring up is the Windows Task Manager. Using that, I managed to install and run SmitfraudFix which was given as a solution to "Spyware detected" screen. After rebooting this did not fix the problem. I also installed SpyHunter 3.5.11 which found Zlob.Trojan, Rogue.AntivirusXP 2008 plus some other ... Read more

I just purchased a new PC for the first time in years. For many years I have been running my Dell Trinitron 17" CRT at a resolution of 800 x 600. The reason for this resolution was because I need the text to be a little bit bigger. Anything higher than that and everything is just too small for me.

Now.. my new PC comes with a 20" (widescreen) LCD monitor. It's obviously a little bit bigger than my Dell. What do you think would be a good resolution setting to work with that will enable the text to be a little bit bigger just as I had when I set my older monitor to 800 X 600.

Evidently most people have much better vision than me because almost no one I know goes with an 800 x 600 setting even if they do have an older monitor.

Any input on this would be very much appreciated.

Thank You

A:Monitor "resolution" suggestions for new 20" (widescreen).

Generally when you use the newer monitors the program will suggest the appropriate resolutions. I think we all use various resolutions dependent upon what we use the computer for. Videos require a higher resolution than other things. Go into your control panel and find your settings and determine what you want and can best use and or see. The higher the resolution the smaller the pixels and the smaller the resolution, (i.e., 800 x 600), the larger the pixels. In today's technology with the online graphics medium resolutions would probably be your best bet.
Check out the options for resolutions and determine your likes.

ps: congrats on your new buy. Hope you enjoy it.

I accidentally pulled the plug out of my computer when it was in the middle of shutting down. Now that I've tried to reboot it, I get a screen saying:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode With Networking
Safe Mode With Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration
Start Windows Normally

Whenever I click on any of the options above, I always ends up back at the same screen, suggest the above options again. I've tried rebooting I again a few times but nothing works?

Any ideas?

"dependency chain" "windows 7" internet "windows explorer"

At the time of this writing, this search in Google will produce one result at best. Am I searching the wrong things? I have tried a couple handfuls of variants, and I am coming up with zilch.

Though I am fairly well versed in Windows 7 from working on other people's machines, I decided to stick with good old XP because of one issue above all else. When I instructed my firewall to block Windows Explorer from accessing the Internet it completely cut me off from the Internet, no ifs, ands or buts. My understanding of why this is happened leads me to believe the dependency chain for Internet access goes through Windows Explorer. I have long had a habit of blocking my File Manager of choice access to the Internet because... well, it's a file manager! Admittedly, my one experience with Windows 7 on my own machine was a retired student version of Server 2008 R2, but as soon as I found out that was the case, I decided not to make the move to Windows 7 and went back to my XP installation. I believe I was using Sunbelt Personal Firewall at the time. I now use PCTools Free Firewall.

Is this still the case with Windows 7? Is there a workaround if it is?

I haven't tried to recreate this on another person's machine.

Hi KronKyrios, welcome to 7F!

I did find some very old information that may shed some light:

"Launch Browser Windows in a Separate Process" Setting Is Not Available in Internet Explorer 5.01 or Internet Explorer 5.5

You can go into Services and check:
Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
Network Connections
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Windows Management Instrumentation

R-click on each one, then Properties, then the Dependencies Tab.
You would have to cross check each one that is listed.

Hey guys.
Can you pleas explain me what does Hardware Acceleration means and why is that when it is turned on, it causes a green screen on the video (with audio working).
It happened to me once in YouTube, where I had to go in to settings and unpick the "Enable Hardware Acceleration", then it worked!
And 2nd time similar thing happened in Cyberlink PowerDirector 10, when I imported .mp4 and flv video files and it showed me green screen with audio. After unpicking "Enable Hardware Decoding " it was fixed.
My Sony VAIO has:
CPU - Intel Core i5 M430 2.27GHz
GPU - AMD Radeon HD 6500M/5600/5700
Does this mean that I have a problem with my hardware, or maybe I need to set up something??? to ba able to use Hardware Acceleration. As I understand I should be able to use it!!??

Thank you
Have a nice day

A:Enabled "Hardware Acceleration" causes "green screen"

I don't know what the problem is but the only time I had this issue is when I installed a VM and get black screen on youtube so I had to enable that.

What is the best quality Dell laptop that will still run Windows 7, but has the most crisp, Retina-type display?    The small 13 inch XPS have a matte finish, are there any with an Ultra HD screen that I can still run windows 7 on? Any help would be TREMENDOUSLY appreciated.  I have one specific work thing I spend a LOT of time on, and it only runs on Windows 7 or older, otherwise I'd get a newer laptop, mac, or anything else.  But since Dell is my favorite, and I've seen the UHD displays, I'm hoping there's a version going back a little that might still run Windows 7.    Thanks!

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?

I went to my screen resolution settings and the slider said it was at 1366x768 ,which is the max on my computer, but below was a warning saying, "Your resolution is lower than 1200x900. I just bought an HP Pavillion dv6-7014nr and I love it! Except for one thing. I upgraded to the 1920x1080 screen to get the HD quality and the matte display. Everything on this screen is so tiny, its uncomfortable to read. I have increased the text size in windows to 130% dpi and I have downloaded and extension in Firefox to keep the zoom level I like. My problem is that with this increased DPI setting, the text in programs, such as iTunes gets cut off or overlaps. I was just wondering if there was a solution to this problem, or is it just something I have to live with?
Thanks very much!

A:[SOLVED] 1920x1080 screen resolution on a 15.6" Laptop Screen

1920x1080 doesn't suit everyone on a 15.6" screen as it's really more suited to large-screen external monitors (20" or more). It's big plus of course is that it gives you much more screen space to use for multi-tasking or using apps which have many palettes (like Photoshop). Personally I think 1920x1080 is way too high for the average laptop screen size unless you've got perfect eyesight.

If you don't need all that space, you may find that setting a lower resolution (and changing DPI & zoom levels back to their defaults) is more in line with what your eyesight can deal with. It probably won't look as pin-sharp as the native 1920x1080 resolution though, but at least you shouldn't get some app Windows extending beyond the screen edges.

I too have another 15.6" laptop which has a 1366x768 native resolution and this resolution is perfectly set, not too small not too big.
Initially my Lenovo G50-45 was set at 1366x768 only, but then I gave my laptop for repair and after that it changed to 1920x1080.
Is there anyway I can restore it back to the previous set resolution of 1366x768?

Anyway, I'm trying to get an older HP running. I get the Windows splash screen then the above described "black screen". I get this in "safe mode", also. I'm starting to lean towards the hard drive and will start trying to find out what brand it is and go to their web site and see if they have a utility program to check it. Hi all,

Sorry to repeat a question I see a lot of instances of, but none of those seem to be addressing my problem correctly.

I have not done anything new to my computer in recent days, so this problem has caught me off guard (I see most instances of this problem come after upgrading to Windows 7, I have had Win 7 installed for a while now).

Here is a summary of my problem:
1) My computer recently got stuck on the "Starting Windows Screen." So I manually held the power button to reboot.
2) On reboot, it said there was a need to run a startup repair, which I did. Everything checked fine, except for the last one which said "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted," which it claimed to have successfully fixed.
3) After rebooting from repair, the system gets stuck on "Starting Windows Screen" for a good 10-15 minutes, after which it runs a registry check. After it completes that I get hopeful -- but the screen then gets stuck on an all black screen with just the mouse cursor and nothing more.
4) Additional note: Attempting to start the computer on "safe mode" leads safe mode startup to become stalled on "DRIVERS\CLASSPNP.SYS"
5) The lastest attempt to repair yielded this message: "Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

A:Stuck on "Starting Windows", Repair Shows "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted"

Hi Stan, Hopefully I can help you out....or at least lead you in the right direction. From my experience, the symptoms you are suggesting sound like perhaps a dying Hard drive.

1. Do you have the windows 7 boot disks that came with your computer or when you bought the Operating System? If so, you could try and insert one of those and boot from it, and attempt to repair the installation. (this won't affect your data, only the windows system files).

2. If that doesn't fix it, you could try a fresh reinstall of windows 7, and see if that works.

3. If neither of those work, its likely that because of the fact that when windows is repairing itself, it is generally putting copies of its system files in the same physical location on your disk. Because your disk is obviously not completely dead, ie....its still loading to the windows 7 startup screen, its just copying files to the bad sectors on your hard drive and gets stuck when loading. This is especially my guess because you said Safe mode is having same problems, even after attempting to repair. In the past, I've tried and salvage a disk by reformatting it and only leaving on partitions which do not contain the bad clusters. This takes some time, and some guess work.....and really this is only a "bandaid" fix because once the disk has bad clusters, its only a matter of time before these things give out. You wouldn't want to trust your important data on it anyways....

I hope this leads you in ... Read more

Hello All,

I just received a brand new computer a few days ago from CyberPower PC. I've attached the specs below.

That being said, I noticed a problem when I was "in a game" and within an hr, the fan revved up, and the computer shut down to black screen (monitor read "no input"). Thinking this was a one-off, I tried again, and the same symptoms persist - after playing for some time, the screen goes blank (no error messages), the fan rev's up, and requires a hard reboot. As an FYI, I paid Cyberpower to OC this computer for me. No error message whatsoever.

Next, during one of the "hard reboots", a message popped up before windows that said the setting were unstable, and that I had to reduce my clock speed down - so I clicked accept (there were no other options to potentially ignore this message).

Here are the steps I've taken to date:
1. Upgrade the MOBO / GPU drivers.
2. Plugged the system directly into the outlet to ensure adequate power (as opposed to power bar).
3. Ensured RAM and GPU was seated properly.
4. Ran MEMTEST - no issues.
5. Ran Prime 95 -> Torture Test -> Blend - Causes a "FATAL ERROR" every time as per below:

"FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4"

Laptop starts to boot, I log in, "welcome" screen comes up but never finishes processing. Harddrive light keeps on pumping endlessly.

I tried to run ?System restore?: I can pick a restore point OK, and it loads it but then gets stuck on ?finishing restore? (similar to the ?welcome screen? thing - it just keeps on processing )

Any ideas of where I can go from here? all Ideas welcomed greatfully - she might expire without her laptop

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Have a look at this Microsoft article: How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

When the system file checker runs it creates a log file, which should help you pinpoint which file couldn't be repaired.

However, if you can't get into Windows you might want to check this tutorial: Startup Repair Infinite Loop Recovery

Did your partner create a set of Dell recovery discs or does she have a Windows 7 DVD?

If all else fails, you may have to re-install Windows.

When trying to update with Windows update, i get a spontaneous reboot or a bluescreen-crash.
The filename "lzx32.sys" is mentioned.

The updates i'm trying to install are the following (roughly translated from norwegian):
"Update for Windows Media Format 11 SDK for Windows XP (KB939399)"
"Windows Tool for removal of dangerous software - march 2007 (KB890830)"
Other than that, i believe i have all other windows-updates.

I do however recall there beeing a third update on the list when i started the installation for the first time.
After the third or forth spontanous restart/bluscreen, when i figured something was wrong, it has disappeared from the list.
I do not know if it actually got installed or not.

I've been following the 5-steps-before-posting as good as possible.
From my normal startup programs msn-messenger and daemon-tools were shutted down before the dss-scan.
Here are the three logs (panda-activescan, dss-main and dss-extra attached):

This is because i was unable to get a fresh "extra.txt" from the last scan (no minimized window at all).

Hi TechGuy,

I'm having some recent problems on my laptop. When I log-in and start using it, the performance starts slowing down. When I look at the Task Manager, I notice that the task called Explorer.exe takes up a lot of my CPU. In a couple of minutes, I also start getting Internet Explorer windows to pop-up on my screen (I normally use Firefox) with advertisements suggesting that my computer is infected and some software downloads that could help. I recently installed McAfee Total Works, or whatever they call their 10-in-1 software which is supposed to do it all. I ran several scans, and on some of them, if did find and disable the Generic.dx trojan. Even though it claims it is doing something, I don't notice any changes - Explorer.exe continues to bog me down, and the IE windows keep popping up to the point that I cannot use my computer effectively anymore.

IBM T-40 laptop (about three and a half years old)
Microsoft XP-Professional

Any pointers would be truly appreciated!!

I have been plagued for years by this bug (see attached Mad_Explorer_col.JPG screen dump), and this morning after visiting Tech Support Guy > Windows XP then searching for "Windows Explorer", on page 2 in "Solved: Explorer tree display curiosity, AKA Odd Windows Explorer Bug", page 2, I found the cause and solution brought by Mosaic1 Wed 07 Mar 2007 05:48 GMT:
Do you have the desktop toolbar on the taskbar?and mrwes Tue 07 Aug 2007 18:34 GMT:
You can get around this by making the toolbar point to the Desktop but using c:\Documents and Settings > (Profile name) > Desktop. You don't see the My Computer and IE icons in the list, but everything else shows up...Thanks a lot to Mosaic1 and mrwes!

Hi all

Ill cut to the chase.

What I am asking is someway of turning the Entire Windows Desktop/Screen "Black and White" not simply High Contrast.

I am one of those unfortunate ones, like many, that suffer from quite severe migraines from time to time. Couple this with frequent headaches, sometimes daily. This obviously isnt helped by the fact that my hobby and career are both in IT. I have tried every possible solution to alleviate the headaches. Lay off certain foods, make sure to have a balanced diet. Turn off any strong lighting around my computer screen, remove any strong colours from the desktop etc......

Windows XP / Vista have tried to address this issue with the accessibility wizard, where you can select the High Contrast Options to take any strong colours off the screen. Unfortunately this still doesnt get rid of everything.

When you make any major changes or "logoff" in XP/Vista, the screen fades to "black and white" for a short period. If you know what I am on about, thats the effect I am after.

More than likely a black and white layer is laid over the desktop to create this effect, unfortunately you would not be able to access anything underneath.

I need a fully functional XP machine in complete black and white.

On old CRT monitors you were able to remove the colour, making the screen B&W, but with alot of LCD screens this function is not available.

If anyone has any ideas, you would be helping so many people.

Any assist... Read more

Hello! I have a Dell laptop, running Windows 7. Yesterday my cat walked across the keyboard and literally that very moment, my internet lost connection.

It wasn't a case where she disabled the wireless capability by pressing the combination of fn and F2. The wireless is turned on, and is in face connected to the wireless network.

The troubleshooter said that the problem is that "default gateway is not available." Also, when I look at the network's properties, IPv4 Connectivity says "No internet connection."

I did a system restore to the night before and nothing changed.

I also tried resetting the IPv4 by entering "netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log" on the command prompt but this did not fix anything.

This afternoon I turned on the laptop again and for a split second, it said I had internet access but the yellow exclamation point came up quickly and I no longer had it.

I am on my old laptop right now and the connection is just fine, and it's also working for my roommate's computer.

Does anyone know how I might be able to fix this? Many thanks in advance.

A:Settings changed? No IPv4 internet access & "Default Gateway N/A"

Right after I posted this, I turned on the affected laptop. Because I had accidentally left it on earlier, the battery ran out so it ran startup repair. The internet worked for about 10 minutes or so. Now it's out again.

24 hours ago I received an email which in my email software inbox called itself "Fw: feelin' good?" The email was very small, but. No header details are visible at all. It purports to come from a friend, but it may be masquerading.

I have AVG Grisoft security. Things started to slow soon after the email's receipt, and I had to reboot, but not before I ran a system check, which told me that the boot sector had been changed. After rebooting, I ran a complete virus check and spyware check - but they found nothing. I don't believe that my system is sending out copies of that email.

A. Has anyone had any experience of this message?
B. Any helpful suggestions, please? Obviously a changed boot sector isn't good, but right now, nothing seems to be amiss.

I am using XP Pro, but not the most recent version (yes, I know...), Firefox 1.5.03 and Forte Agent v.4 for email.

I changed the above setting in my device manager hoping to fix an annoying stutter problem caused with media player when my wireless signal would go out of range. I remembered changing the irq settings in win2k to solve conflicts on that system, but found that the options is not available in xp. A quick web search lead to a site which reproduced a knowledge base article from microsoft. Only, the article was truncated in a way such that the dangers of said action were not published. The drive boots up to the XP OS screen, hangs, blue screens, the end.
With my problem drive set up as a slave, is there a way to change the settings back, or manually cut and paste Hkeys, or system folders or the like to restore the drive to it's previous state? Seems logical... same computer with the same installation of xp pro sp2...
Please don't bother telling me to pull everything and reformat, I really want to avoid the trouble of reinstalling my programs and manually having them point at all the right files, not to mention the six hour process of xp install and optimizing.

I had my old computer hooked up to a 22" LCD but when I got a new computer I hooked it (the old computer) up to a 17" LCD. On startup, I get the windows splash screen, then everything goes blank and I get the Input Signal Out of Range message.

I was able to get into safe mode where I set the screen resolution back to the lowest setting. I rebooted and had the same message. Now I have tried a number of times and can't even get back into safe mode. I start tapping F8 when the splash screen shows up - is that too soon?

Please advise on how to get back into safe mode and then what do I do differently once I get there. Thanks!

Hello, a few days ago my computer with XP Pro SP3 installed was infected with the malware "XP Home Security 2011" and every attempt I've tried to remove it from my computer has failed so far. I noticed it first when I turned my computer on a few days ago, a window for the fake antivirus program popped up upon start up and started "scanning," which told me had found numerous viruses. AVG failed to load, but Ad-Aware did and upon trying to open AVG the fake XP Home Security window pops up again instead of AVG, which I assume blocks AVG from even opening. The same problem happens with Malwarebytes. Upon trying to access the internet through Firefox leads me to a "security warning" page that the malware set up, hijacking my browser. It says that the browser could potentially give me viruses but allows me the option to continue "unprotected," but when I click the link to continue the security warning page reloads, and to keep clicking the continue link reloads the security page ad nauseam. Internet explorer is the only other browser on my computer and the same problem happens with that browser, as I'm on a different computer now. The program "awr.exe" is the name of the window that pops up when the fake antivirus program runs and ending that program in the task manager will close that window, but the internet and program blocking continues.

Now when I start my computer, programs that would normally load at startup will f... Read more

The sytem is fine now, except the ~3 TB RAID5 array is not seen by W7. The W7 disk managment snap-in reports that the 2793.97 GB "drive" exists, but the status is "Unknown" and "not initialized". Needless to say, the drve was online and contained LOTS of data before the crash. Due to it's size, the drive was GPT.

I ran a synchronize on the RAID 5 array and that finished w/o error, so I assume the actuall array is fine.

Any recommendations for what utllity/diagnostic/etc. to try next?

This is a resurection of an old unresolved Vista Post, and it also happens in Windows 7.
Original subject - Start Menu - program search issue
I use Windows Mail for my daily email tasks, and would like to be able to
open the program by using the vista search bar built into the start menu. The
problem is, when i search for "mai" it brings up Windows Mail, and I can hit
enter and load the program. However, when I search for "mail", it returns:
"No items match your search." I have it set to index both the start menu and
my programs directory, and have even tried to rebuild the index.

It seems kind of strange that Vista would recognize that when I type "mai" I
want my mail programs, but when I actually type "mail", it gets confused...
and this in turn has -me- confused.
Oh thank goodness, I've finally found someone else with the same problem.
The word I have issues with is "photo" ("phot" works great, but no results

I'm posting this in the Vista forum because this has never happened with Windows 2000 or XP.

I bought two exact duplicate models of hard disks. I set up Vista Ultimate on one of my systems. I used Acronis True Image 10 to clone the operating disk to the factory-new, never-used, same model disk as a backup drive in the event the first disk failed. I put in the clone to be sure it runs; but, I get the error mentioned in the title of this thread.

Now, if the second disk is supposed to be a clone of the first, why does this happen and how can I fix it?

I'm not married to Acronis for this job so I would use any disk cloning tool that makes a sector-for-sector copy. I use Norton Ghost 2003 for making sector-for-sector raw image (forensic) copies of PATA drives; but, these are SATA drives and Ghost 2003 simply sits there like Tarbaby and he don't say nuttin' to no SATA drive.

The problem started out with "Pictures" folder suddenly empty (Note: Pictures on destop are still there). Searched for *.jpg on entire computer (c:\) but did not find what i needed. Did a system restore; still no pictures.

I think i made the problem worst by mistakenly following METHOD 1 & 3 on archived thread "Personal User Folder - Restore Missing Folder" (this was my error because my "Pictures" folder was empty -- not missing) Personal User Folder - Restore Missing Folder (Caution to others: Please read carefully)

Below are steps that may have made my problem worst.

13. Right click on the .reg (On Desktop) file and click on Merge.

14. Click on the Run button in the Security Warning pop-up.

16. When done, you can delete the .reg file(s) (on Desktop) if you like.

17. Log off and log on, or restart the computer to restore the folder.
NOTE: Sometimes you may need to restart more than once for the changes to be applied.

It listed a nice video card. When it was delivered I think they said they were out of that vidcard but gave me another equivalent. I forget the details now tho.

For the longest time, the video card driver was listed as "ATI Radeon HD 4650"

Just recently I had some BSOD issues of the Display timeout type. One of the things I tried to fix the issue was to check for device driver. But windows said that everything was fine and updated.

One of the last things I tried with it was to disable the video card device driver (Radeon 4650)
Then Try looking for updates again.

When I did this, the system CHAGED DRIVERS on me. It changed to Radeon 550v. This sounded VERY familiar! Like I think this was the original card that was supposed to be there. Or else it was the one they switched to. THe details are cloudy but I remember this name.

So which card do I have? DO I trust what WIndows just did?

A:Device manager "Changed" my video card

Why would you disable the Display device to find another driver? You'd want to Update driver to do that, or uninstall at the most to force a reinstall of the existing driver.

Re-enable the device you disabled and now what devices are listed under Display? From view Tab in Device Manager, unhide any devices.

Enable Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3) then check for Updates, install all Important and Optional Updates except Bing. Look for drivers but also install all patches because these may be needed to make your devices work correctly.

To confirm the actual device make/model trace it's Hardware Identification. Once you have the true make/model device, go to your PC's Support Download webpage to look for the latest version of that driver in case it is modded by manufacturer for you laptop. If not, you can try the device maker's latest driver from its Support Downloads webpage.

On my last C: defrag, partway through the process, the message, Drive Contents Changed, Restarting, appeared on the screen. The Defrag scale promptly returned to zero and the whole process of checking and rewriting started all over again. This happened a total of 6 times at varying percentages of the defrag process. The defrag did complete, but took roughly 2-3 times as long as it should've. What would cause this message to appear? How do I solve whatever the issue, assuming there is one, is the cause of this message? Please Advise.

I changed the location of my "Documents" shortcut on the left side of Windows Explorer from C:\Users\<username>\Documents to my OneDrive Documents folder. I want to change it back to where it was before but I'm getting error messages. I removed the read-only attributes from both folders, but I'm still getting the problems.

A:Accidentally changed location of "Documents" shortcut

Hello Brendan,

The error message is saying that you already have a "C:\Users\Brendan\Documents" folder.

By default, you have both a "C:\Users\Brendan\Documents" and "C:\Users\Brendan\SkyDrive\Documents" folders. These are not the same folder.

Do you not see the "C:\Users\Brendan\Documents" folder at that location? If not, then see if using OPITON TWO below may help.

So, I was reading about hotkeys and tried "win+plus button" that was supposed to zoom in. It opened up the magnifier application, but it also seems to have changed the taskbar 'edge.' What I mean by that is that when I maximize a window it now expands to the whole screen, going under the taskbar, whereas before the bottom of the maximized window would coincide with the top of the taskbar.

I tried removing the transparency, but that didn't fix it. I've scoured the internet for solutions, but it is difficult to weed out the normal mundane customizations for this specific issue.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

A:Magnifier hotkey changed taskbar "edge"

I unlocked the taskbar, moved it to another edge, and moved it back. Once that was done it reset.

Thanks anyway!!

I am unable to change any windows features whatsoever! Every time I try, I get the following error message, "an error occurred not all features were successfully changed" It tells me to restart my computer. After restart, I find out that nothing has been changed at all! Games are still checked, Internet Explorer 11 is still unchecked, Indexing service is still unchecked, and Windows Gadget Platform is still checked. when I unchecked those that I mentioned where checked and vice versa. I Googled the problem but only outdated Windows Vista results showed up in Google. There is nothing regarding this problem in Windows 7. This does this error message every time I try to change anything. sfc /scannow says "no integrity violations found" so that is not the problem.

Any ideas on what the problem may be and how do I fix this?

Hi Sylveon,
You sure seem to have had some problems lately.
Do you have the install media,(hope it wasn't a torrent), that comp didn't come with Ultimate, W8 with d/g rights to 7 pro
I believe your best bet is a repair install.

I'm using Excel 2007 on a Windows7 computer. Please bear with me if I use incorrect terminology. I learned Excel by "playing around" & don't know what different parts of the window are called.

Somehow, I changed the "view" that I see for my spreadsheets. It happened while I was working on a sheet & now seems to be the default, because I've opened other sheets & have the same problem.

I'm used to seeing a "strip" at the top of my sheets saying "Home....Insert....Page Layout....Formulas....", etc. Depending upon which "selection" is made on that top "strip", there's a larger strip just below showing what's available. "Home", for example, shows Paste, Cut, Copy, fonts & sizes, bold, italics, underline, etc.

Now I only see the top "strip". Clicking on a choice shows the appropriate larger strip, but it covers part of the top (header) row. Clicking anywhere on the sheets causes the larger strip to disappear again. In fact, Clicking anywhere on the screen (inside or outside of Excel) causes it to disappear. I tried clicking the Snipping Tool icon on the taskbar to attach a jpg to show what I'm talking about, but that caused Excel's appearance to change to top strip only.

How do I get back to the "original" default "view"?

A:Solved: Excel Default "view" has changed

Right click on the top strip and uncheck minimize the ribbon
