Problems with Nvidia gpu post BIOS system BIOS update.

Q: Problems with Nvidia gpu post BIOS system BIOS update.

Hello all, this is my first time posting here so please forgive any mistakes/oversights. I've just updated my Samsung laptop's system BIOS via their software update program, and my Nvidia GPU (GT 650m DDR3) no longer seems to work. The Nvidia control panel is still there, and it still gives me the option to select which programs use the GPU, but there is no GPU actitivity showing up. Also,I've tried playing Skyrim (which auto-detects the PC's graphics cards) , and the game no longer seems to detect the Nvidia GPU (just the Intel integrated graphics).

My laptop model is NP550PC7, with 6 gig of ram, and an i7 quad core CPU, and the OS is Window 7 Home Premium 64bit.

I've tried looking in the BIOS but I can't seem to find anything related to the GPU or display options. Any help or avice is much appreciated.

A: Problems with Nvidia gpu post BIOS system BIOS update.

Hi,

Have you updated your GPU with the latest drivers?

http://www.geforce.co.uk/drivers

Please navigate to:

Start> Control panel> Swith to icon view> device manager.
Look under "Display Adapters"

Is the Nvidia GPU listed there? If so are there any yellow symbols etc?

Cheers

Dave

I have a Gigabyte Z77X UD5H motherboard and the USB 3.0 ports developed problems. The motherboard has 3 separate USB 3.0 connectors that can be used for front panel USB 3.0 ports. The front panel in my case (a Coolermaster) has two USB 3.0 ports. One port developed an intermittent - it would connect and then Windows 7 (and 8) would report the external hard drive required formatting, and then would reverb back to displaying the drive contents. On the second port I would get a message that if I connected the device (the external hard drive) to a 3.0 port it would work faster. I tried the separate USB 3.0 interface that was supplied by Gigabyte with the motherboard and the same results. I have another PC with USB 3.0 ports and the device worked OK on that PC.

I went through all 3 motherboard port connections and got the same thing. I had the latest Intel 3.0 drivers but I reinstalled them with no help. I tried the Intel motherboard chipset drivers and no help. I had the latest BIOS version (14) and reinstalled it with no help (and resetting the CMOS memory did not help). I contacted Gigabyte with the problem and was issued an RMA but held off as the PC with the problem is my recording studio system and it would have been an issue to have it out of service for an extended period, and although I have an USB 3.0 device it wasn't something I couldn't live without so I never used the RMA, and let it expire.

I decided to look into the USB 3.0 port issue again, tried the USB 3.0 ... Read more

Hello to the BleepingComputer community,First of all I'm sorry I haven't finished some of the steps from the Preparation Guide. It's because these steps require a reboot (e.g. Step 6: Disable your CD Emulation Software - DeFogger will ask me to reboot the machine), and I have a bad feeling about the question if it is safe to reboot in my situation: I'm not sure if I have a type of malware which is ready to infect the BIOS - if it is so, then it could infect it much easier during the reboot process.- If there is a good way to find out what is the problem (and fix the BIOS threat part if it really is present) without rebooting / shutting down this PC, or at least without booting from this hard drive (which I feel is probably infected), then please tell me what should I do.- If you know a place / forum where I can get a specialized help for this (seemingly BIOS-malware related) situation, please tell me where I could go.- If there is no way to move forward, I'll go ahead and risk the reboot, and follow the other steps (steps 6 to 10) in the Preparation Guide, no problem.I kindly ask you to please read below the details of the problem as it occured to me, and the things I have tried so far.The PC is AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core BE-2350 2.1GHz, Motherboard Biostar TA690G AM2 (with AWARD BIOS), 4GB RAM, 200GB SATA HDD, and an ASUS EAH4870 card added a few years ago. It's with WinXP SP3, AVG Free 2012, (standard) Windows Firewall, and it's behind a router.I ... The other night (A safe shutdown) and just so ppl know what I've been doing, since December I've been playing WOWandaria daily...for hours on end. 6+.

After the shutdown, I left to get groceries came back home and turned on my PC...it would not boot.
no beep...just fans REVing up and down. Turned it off, turned it on. switched voltage, switched it back. unplugged my video card, plugged it back. everything I did, the same thing...fans rev up, no beep.

Today, I get on my laptop and check around. ppl mentioned CMOS and it's battery. I removed it, 5mins later put it back in. Dejuvu... look more...mention totally unplugging every damn thing in the pc, even the power coords on the MB.

I unplug the one next to the CPU, and the massive one on the MB then power on and it works but I only have my one HDD, since other is unplugged. shut down (safely), hook it up....deju f'in vu... repeat the unplugging of the motherboard power, and it works...

but, each time I did that the cmos resets and tells me the times are wrong, etc. sets the crap back to 2008.

before I go buying anything, is the cmos battery on it's last legs? since isnt that what loads the bios, and if it's dead..it wont boot? but by unplugging it, forces a hard reset?
or is it something else.
(posting this on that very computer atm, after unpluggin the MB power)

Hello,

I have an ASUS M3A78-EM motherboard. It's been great, and I've had no problems for a about 1 1/2 years. I've gone though several updates on the BIOS for new RAM or CPU compatibility reasons.

I was on 1602 BIOS version and I was trying to update to 1805 today. I did it the same as I normally do through the ASUS Live update utility. I download the BIOS update, and did the "update from file". It went throught the first two parts with no problem. When it hit the 3rd, it failed. I was still in Vista at this point, and then restarted the computer (like I would do after a BIOS update).

After Vista restarted, the computer does nothing. There is no post, no beeps, no logos, just a blank screen like the screen isn't even hooked up. I figured something like this would happen because of the previous error.

I reset the CMOS by taking out the MB battery and moving the jumpers like it says in the manual. I turned the PC back on, to nothing again. It just turns on, but nothing happens at all. I can't even hold the power button to turn the computer off, I have to unplug it from the back.

I thought ASUS had some "crash free" BIOS thing for their motherboards for failed BIOS updates. (At least that's what one of this motherboard's features are). So I downloaded the BIOS again on a USB stick, changed the name like they say I have to (M3A78EM.ROM) and of course the PC will not read from the USB stick.

So now I'm stuck. Pl... Read more

A:ASUS M3A78-EM BIOS update then no post

Well, that's what you're asking for when you do BIOS updates just because you can. There is always a chance of failure, and usually nothing can be done afterwards. Asus crash free BIOS is very reputable of being just as useful as a vacuum cleaner for actually recovering a BIOS after a failed flash. Marketing trick basically. It probably works in one of ~25 cases.

Hi,
Any advice?
I have a 9010 SFF that was working fine, except that it would not install the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.  Repeatedly, about 30% through the update it failed with a BSOD. I tried several times.
Somewhere I read that the BIOS might need updating so I headed over to DELL support.  I let the website automatically detect my system and it found a recommended BIOS update, version A24.
I initiated the BIOS update from the website and it seemed to run successfully but when the PC rebooted it hung half way through POST.
On a second attempt to start the machine - nothing - no display, no light, just will not start.
I tried clearing the NVRAM as indicated on the DELL website here: www.dell.com/.../SLN284985
I tried both the RTCRST jumper method and the battery removal method.
The result - it now continuously reboots but still no POST, no display, nothing.
I should add that during the original BIOS update, the PC had a Quadro 600 graphics card and a LSI 9200-8e SAS adapter card inside. They had both been working faultlessly and were removed when I tried to reset the BIOS NVRAM.
Any suggests on what next to recover my "bricked" desktop?

Has anyone else noticed that after the A09 bios update to your 11-3147 it takes way longer to boot up? It takes on average 15 seconds of staring at the Dell logo before Windows 10 starts to boot. I installed an SSD drive once It gets to the point of the OS booting it's lightning fast...just the bios post seems exceptionally slow. I'll try reinstalling the previous bios to confirm. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this happen also. I also have an 11-3148 and there was a bios update for it on the same day. It didn't affect it's boot speed at all and in fact seemed to cure the "plugged in not charging" issue that it had.

A:Inspiron 11-3147 A09 bios update - slow post

I'm using a Samsung Evo 850 256Gb.
Here's an update to this strange story: Yesterday I reverted back to A07 bios. bios went in all fine but then can't boot into windows. It doesn't see my drive. it does in the bios but not during post apparently. All boot and drive settings look the same as they were before. Tried a repair install of 10 which actually worked for me this time (previously I've only had failures for some reason). It finishes and gives me a log file of the apps and such it killed in the process. Mostly just the Dell Apps which is no big deal. Rebooted and once again boot times are nice and speedy as I was hoping. And that's not all folks! To top it all off, it now sleeps properly instead of just shutting down like I was whining about in my last post. Bizarre to say the least. This was my last ditch effort. If this had failed I was going back to the dreaded 8.1. Used it all evening as I normally would and it's working flawlessly. Only thing I notice of any mention is the battery will not show 100% charge which is what the A09 bios update fixed. No biggie. It says 99% and I know it's fully charged. It really makes me wonder how much the guys at Dell check stuff out before it's released. Seems like every computer guy that's worked for my company is the same way....fix one bug but neglect to check if the fix affected anything else and walk away.

This is my first time posting, so sorry if this is in the wrong section, I didn't see one for a rack workstation.
I've given a description on my problems below, for anyone who'll bother helping.

A few years back, I got a refurbished Precision R5500 with dual Quadro 6000s. I noticed the driver was outdated, and updated it. Unfortunately, when I did so, the driver would crash several times a day, with no clear indication of why or when. It was several months before we figured out what driver was previously on it (266.87), and reinstalled that. It's still running mostly stable.
However, this driver downgrade caused an issue for me. I'm a gamer, and apparently, version 266.87 does not run Frostbite-based games correctly. For example, Battlefield 3 and Need for Speed The Run both have an invisible floor.
I'd pretty much given up on looking for solutions a couple years ago, but yesterday, I decided to give it another shot. I quickly found a thread on the old Dell TechCenter, which you can view here, where users had found a solution. They had updated the VBIOS to what appears to be version 70.0.6F.0.2. My current version is 70.0.57.0.2, so it'd make sense that if mine was updated, I'd be able to update the drivers without them crashing.
Problem is, there are no links to the update on the web; at least, not that version. The closest thing I've found is on HP's website, which you can view here, but I get the feeling that's only for HP compu... Read more

A:nVidia Quadro 6000 Video BIOS Update

No response after a week. To be expected; this is a rare issue, by the looks of it.

I've tried the HP update at this point, via cmd, which simply said "no adapters found that were compatible with this update." Won't do further tests with that, since I don't want to risk anything with the DOS method.
In the wake of the Dell community's help (that's sarcasm), I've been trying to contact people on the thread linked in my previous post - specifically, people who said they could send the update to those who asked for it - to see if they might still have it.

Peace.

Hi,
My system does not boot, the BIOS is hanging at Loading of bootloader stage.
once i remove my newly replaced SATA hdd the system boots fine and does not hang anymore. after removing the HDD i can also boot via Bootable CD.but the PC does not start if HDD is plugged in.

My system specs:
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
MS K8MM-V -- details
1GB Drr 400Mhz Ram
Nvidia Geforce 6200
80 GB sata hard drive ST380815AS
Problem
My HDD crashed, so i replaced it with new one. installed it correctly. it booted fine. loaded windows on it in morning. now since evening. it does not boot.
I have checked the SATA-I compability jumper, its set at factory default i.e 1.5GB/s
also, the VIA Raid config which shows up just after POST screen, as trouble detecting HDD, sometimes it detects it and some sometimes it hangs.
but it sureshot hangs while loading bootloader stage

Please help

[edit]
I downloaded Seagate Seatools and tried booting with it. it does not boot with hdd attached.it hung at InitDisk function
so i removed the HDD and seatools booted fine. after that i again install the HDD *without* poweriting off my PC.
and guess what it worked!!
and i tested the drive with Short and long test. and it passed both the test without any troubles

A:System does not boot,BIOS hangs mid way after POST screen

Unless your controller supports hot swapping, I would NOT do that again.
Have you replaced the sata cable and or tried another sata pw connector?

FWIW just because a disk passes the drive maker's diagnostic, does not mean it is OK. I had a system a few weeks ago that passed ALL tests twice and I zero filled the drive; still problems. Installed a known good seagate drive, all problems stopped.

That said... I've NEVER seen this type of issue(s) before.
4 months ago I had a BSOD 0x000000D0 once. On restart the system noted the incident, recovered and appeared to have no ill effects for 3+ months.
Next BSOD indicated an issue regarding winfl32.sys. Net Forums offered various opinions that didn't identify one (or more) specific issues to address. Several indicated spyware removal and others offered removal of the FolderLock program. (Have been using FolderLock for several years without incident and have not recently upgraded to newer versions). Hello everyone! I ama new user and i am coming up with this post as I couldn`t find any kind of solution for my problem.Recently I decided to do a reinstallation of my operating system, which also previously was Windows 7 Ultimate (x64). The installation went as usual, and after finishing it I went on to install all the latest drivers from the Lenovo site, for my product. When getting close to installing almost all the drivers i`ve needed, i stumbled upon a new version of the BIOS amnd the drivers and sfotware recommended for my laptop, by the producer. So i proceeded to install the upgrade, restarted the computer when it prompted me to do so, but after the so-called restart the laptop did not boot up as usual. At first it was telling me to not do anything as the BIOS is being flashed and then it was telling me something about some sort of image processing, things that i did not understand at the time (i have never encountered anything like that). After that my screen turned black. I have not done anything for a few couple of minutes as i thought it was supposed to be like that, but then i just force shut it down and unplugged the AC adapter. When trying to boot it all up again, the only thing i got was a black screen and nothing else. After doing a little bit of research it appears that, somehowm i`ve managed to corrupt the bios on my laptop or something, and nothing else would work at this point. I removed battery and destroyed the rubber on the bottom. I had to open the laptop, because one morning I got the massegae that my laptop is overheated and fan does not work properly. Both fans works only during the lounch, when windows works only one fan was in operations, second one never starts again. Looking for the solution in the internet I have found that this can be because of BIOS is not updated.  I pushed F2, checked the the system, everything is fine and then I installed only one version which I have found there. No massages regarding overheating any more, both Fans are working full power and very very loud. Made the huge mistake of updating BIOS. Had small MOBO usb prob, and for some reason thought a BIOS update would do something. Wasn't too worried because Gigabyte touts Dual BIOS pretty strong.

Anyway, tried updating BIOS, then system would not boot, so the Backup BIOS didn't kick in. btw, the MOBO is a Gigabyte GA-K8N Pro.

So I copied the backup bios to a floppy and used the floppy to fix the main bios. OK, now computer would boot, but would freeze up after the desktop icons appear. Actually would sometimes work for a few minutes, but always froze up.

Boots OK to safe mode, even to the point of getting online, so I downloaded the old bios from Gigabyte, put them on floppy and used that to update the main bios. Same result.

Also did a system restore from XP Pro Safe Mode (because XP wrongly states that this can be undone; didn't find out that System Restore done from safe mode cannot be undone until I tried to undo!).

My tech support (ABS Computer; they rule) thinks that the BIOS is now fine, that some windows files are corrupt and a re-install will fix problem and mobo is probably fine as well. I'll buy that.

anyone have any miracle suggestions before i re-install? Is a repair install worth a shot? Really not looking forward to re-installing all my software and putting all my data back where it belongs to get my email hist., bookmarks, etc. back.

thanks - I will now write the following 500 times: LEAVE THE BIOS ALONE! even with Dual BIOS

Hello,
I am having problems with direct booting into Windows 8 installed into a VHDX file.
This is a four-partition UEFI boot on a GPT drive. EFI files are residing on a second partition of disk 0 (the ESP partition) in the EFI folder. The boot virtual disk is residing on the fourth partition of that disk 0.
When I turn on the PC, it shows black screen after the BIOS POST screen. No Windows 8 boot menu, no other information is displayed. However, if I press Shift+F12 (or F12) to start Dell BIOS Boot Menu and choose Windows Boot Manager from the UEFI part of
the boot menu, Windows 8 starts to boot without difficulties.
How do I make Windows to boot automatically without having to select Windows Boot Manager in DELL BIOS boot menu?
I believe I messed up with boot sector somehow... What needs to be fixed provided that Windows 8 will boot into VHDX file?
Thank you.

The computer wont start.   After pressing "ON" one can hear a vibration sound, it turns on an orange LED.   Stays black for two  minutes; then screen does light to a dim night-blue color.     This is for a Split x2 13-g110dx (windows 10 64bit). Already tried:  hard reset and going to BIOS (Windows button + "B"). Also tried booting from  a USB drive.   It did not work (see screen below). Any suggestion(s) of how it can still be revived ("do it myself")? Thank you.                                       Screen message

I have compaq cq60 laptop and using windows 7 ultimate 32bit. Well I have checked hp drivers & software support website and there is update available. Well now BIOS version F.32 and F.65 is now available. I want to know If I updates so wouldn't it harm or damage my windows file and personal. What will be changes made after this. Anxiously waiting for the response.

thanks.

A:System BIOS update is available.

BEFORE you make any changes, you should look through the BIOS utilities and confirm there is a way to (1) save off the current working BIOS, and (2) restore from that saved BIOS if the update goes badly. Updating a BIOS is always risky -- as I found out when I did a routine update to my Gigabyte board and it crashed. Since I was able to restore it from the saved BIOS, I was OK.

The BIOS won't do anything to Windows or any of its files, but if it fails for some reason, you will not be able boot your PC at all. So, it's very important to check the stuff I mentioned above.

When an IBM compatible computer is first turned on, the hardware runs a Power-On Self Test (POST). If errors are encountered during this POST test, they are usually displayed via an audio beep or in the form of a code number flashed across the screen. With this audio code in hand, you can determine what part of the system is having problems and find a solution.

<small>The pattern of beeps whether its the number of beeps or the length of those beeps will give you an indication of the actual problem. Its a distress signal from the computer in a morse code like pattern. Unless you have a diagnostic card to tell you more about the particular problem, you will have to use the charts below to decipher the computer error and get your machine back up and running.

I have, or had a laptop purchased 9 months ago, therefore under warranty. Yesterday the ThinkVantage System Update recommended a BIOS update. After the traditional recommendations about what should not shut down the computer, the laptop is reset and started with the update.

During execution, displayed on a screen command, a message "ERROR XXXX. Press any key to continue." After press the key the laptop was freezedy was completely blocked. After an hour without seeing response and no sign of life, I decided to turn it off to confirm the disaster. The laptop was dead.

The laptop began to beep and would not start. Before the panic generated by the situation, I searched the forums where I found several cases that refer to the same problem and the insinuation that makes LENOVO about the customer's responsibility to avoid recognizing the warranty.

I was not looking for a BIOS update, it was recommended by ThinkVantage System Update, the software executed it and damage the equipment.

Besides being a damage caused by the ThinkVantage System Update, the situation gets worse when the answer given by support insinuates that the customer turn off the computer, so it is a CID (Customer Induced Damage) and therefore the guarantee does not cover it. I do not understand how LENOVO may imply that the responsibility of the customer. Really disastrous.

In conclusion, if you are not needing to make a BIOS update, it is preferable to omit the BIOS update messages given to ThinkVantage System... Read more

A:No operating system after BIOS update

3 things I would try in this situation- in the order I would do them if no success on first. 1-Immediately after powering on start tapping the F10 key to enter BIOS. (You may need to tap Esc key then choose F10 from menu options) Once in tap F9 to reset to Default settings. Then tap F10 to Save & Exit. 2-No joy? Try a hard reset.Disconnect all external devices first.1-remove power cord and battery2-press power button for 30 seconds3-reinstall only power cord for first startup.4-power on 3-Still no joy?try rolling back to previous BIOS. 1-Immediately after powering on hold/tap the Esc key. 2-When the menu appears, tap F2 for System Diagnostics. 3-In the list of items will be BIOS or Firmware Management.Use the arrow key to move down & highlight it.Press Enter key. 4-You should now have a Rollback BIOS option.Use arrow key again to highlight and press Enter key.

I apologize in advance if I posted this in the wrong forum but, I?m at wits end. I recently put a new system together basically from the ground up. The initial start up was fine, installed windows and got to installing system drivers in windows no problem. Here is where I think I screwed up, I went and updated the BIOS, the system restarted, but no video. I got a amber light on the monitor, hard drive and the whole nine in the case are working/running. Try restarting multiple times, same thing. So, disconnect the power and took the BIOS/CMOS battery out and waited about an hour. I reinstalled the battery, started it back up, I get, ?CMOS CHECKSUM BAD? and gives two options, ?PRESS F-1 TO ENTER SET UP? or ?F-2 TO LOAD DEFAULTS AND COUTINUE?. You press F-1 and it opens the BIOS menu, when I get that far, I?ve tried ?USE DEFAULT? or ?OPTIMISE?, same outcome. I hit F-2 and it loads defaults but I have a 1 in 10 chance of getting to windows or even the safe mode screen. But after a bit, the screen goes black, and I?m back at no video. All my parts are fresh out of the box and to my knowledge there shouldn?t be conflicts. A friend of mine I work with is having a similar issue, and I?m 99% sure his set up is different from mine.

Got a bit of a problem with my housemates pc...
A friend gave him some extra RAM, i checked it out and it was crucial 512mb pc2100 CL2.5, and although it didn't match his exsisting RAM it seemed to me that his mobo would only run the FSB at 200mhz anyway so i went ahead and fitted it.
It worked fine I then noticed his system temp was running a little high (60-65 degrees), so i took his heatsink off and cleaned the

dust and refitted it with some new thermal compound.
I added too much and the temp went up. To nearly 90 degrees.
I shut it dwon as i didn't want the cpu to pop, cleaned it off, reapplied less compound and figured this would work fine.

Now we have the problem.
Most of the time: Power on and nothing happens. No bios, no beeps.
Occasionally: Power on, i jump into the bios, the temp looks fine (30-40 degrees) and then it freezes right there in the bios after about 30 seconds to a minute.

This sounds like a heat issue, but the last temp reading before freeze is 33 degrees.....?
I've double and triple checked that the heatsink is on properly and thats fine. I followed the official guide on how much compound to use (a blob the size of an uncooked short grain of rice).

Hi, I saw the new BIOS version 1.25 dated ?14?.?09?.?2016 appearing on Lenovos support site. I did not check the version I was having on my system before downloading the "new BIOS", so I started the installer and the tool told me I already have this BIOS version. msinfo32.exe tells me I am having BIOS 1.25 dated 13.07.2016. So apparently the BIOS was released already some time ago and I already flashed it to 1.25. So whats the point of re-releasing the 1.25? If there are any changes of todays version compared to the 1.25 released some time ago, is it worth flashing? If yes, how can I do this if the tool tells me I am already having the latest version and it does not let me override my BIOS? Thanks and best regards,Martin

Hello, my story is pretty long but I'll try to summerize it. I bought an Acer TC-605 recently and noticed in time that the onboard Realtek network card was working horribly. After many attempts to fix this, I decided to buy an individual network adapter, TC-3468 V2, because it had good reviews, albeit cheap, but that didn't fix anything either, even if I did find the right chipset driver. ASUS A7v8x-x Motherboard

The motherboards would not recognize the correct cpu speed so I flashed the BIOS with an upgrade provided directly from the asus support page. On 3 of them I have had no problems. They are identical systems, software and hardware.
On the computer in question I have had a bunch of problems.
If the computer is soft-rebooted, through windows, it will turn off.
Pressing the power button at this point does nothing at all.
If you remove the power cable for 5 seconds and then plug it back in the power button will start to work again. I have tried re-flashing the bios, clearing the CMOS and reinstalling the OS.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Note: Computer worked did not experience this problem prior to bios update.

Hi Greg, Try the following. If the bios update is still running in HPSA, click the Stop button. Close HPSA, restart the notebook, then download the Bios Update from the link below and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp75001-75500/sp75199.exe When the download has completed, close any other open windows and programs, then open your Downloads folder and double-tap the installer to start the process.  The actual flash will occur when the machine restarts - do not interrupt this in any way, even if nothing appears to be happening for a while - when it has completed, the machine will load into Windows as usual. Note:  If the option to Update shows as being 'blocked on this device', you will need to Contact HP regarding this. Regards, DP-K

A:BIOS update made system crash!!

Well first off, flashing the bios would have no affect on connecting to your router, the problem you had was within windows, or with the router. Next time just reboot the router, then reboot windows and it should fix the problem. But anyway, go into the bios and reset to defaults, reboot the pc and let us know what happens.

Hello,

Have a Dell desktop, XPS 8900.

A pop up presumably from Dell says it wants to "update" my System BIOS.

Sounds scary.

Isn't the BIOS the complete "guts" of the OS ?
Whys should an update be necessary ?

Should I do it ?

Thanks,
Bob

A:DELL Wants To Update My System BIOS: Questions On, Please ?

The BIOS (Basic Input Output System) is the chip that controls your system during boot up until it is "transferred" to the OS itself.
(That's a nutshell description, but should suffice here).

It is not the OS, but the SW "Guts" of your computer (Motherboard).

Whether or not to upgrade:

First, what does the update correct? They should list that info, or link to it.

In general, I'm the type to always update the BIOS if a new firmware is released, that said though, my mainboard has three separate BIOS's that I can switch to, so if one is borked by an update, or changes I make, I can go back to the original (I leave one on the original for that purpose).

If all is well on your system, you do not have to perform the update at all, and that may be the best advice I can give you, especially if you are questioning it to begin with, but if you are willing to do it, depending on what it may change for your system, it may be worthwhile.

I'll review it and post later, or others may chime in as they see fit.

UPDATE: I checked the Dell site for your system, but don't see an update for today, that's not to say anything malicious is going on, but can you give more details on the pop up?

What version it wants to update you to? Etc.
You could also boot into your BIOS and give us the version you are on, if you are several versions "behind" the most current one, it may also be beneficial to do it, again depending on what I outlined above.

ArcSec.sys - ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre 5: Driver Reference Table
NTIOLib_X64.sys - MSI Afterburner: Driver Reference Table (Please un-install this, it's a known BSOD maker)

I got this PC about 6 months ago as a refurb from Woot.com. It ran great and has only been used for emails/fantasy football for me and youtube/roblox for my son. I didnt change anything internal and its completely stock. Ive really enjoyed the HP updater thing because I remember on my old PC how much of a pain it was to search graphics card updates and stuff. Last Wednesday it gave me an exclamation point that there was a new update. It said it was for the bios and gave no additional instructions. It ended up freezing on this screen https://imgur.com/gallery/5eZuS and eventually crashed. Since then nothing works. The power button does nothing. I have a light on the back of the power supply that it is receiving power but nothing happens when I hit the button. I was looking at this link which makes it appear that crashing during a bios update can happen but all the solutions involve getting it to boot to the bios and I cannot do that. http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01368145 Does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix? I am really hoping I do not have to replace the motherboard. Sorry so long and thank you for reading.

Hi,  The BIOS update using HP Support Assistant fails.  When I try to install the update manually, it crashes, and killed my HDMI port. It appears that the Bios is locked, and the option to selsct that option is greyed out. As such, I can't iupdate the BIOS - and CPU performance has been an issue I was concerned about.  It'd be GREAT to install this update. Any ideas?   Thanks! - MT

I just upgraded to the A32 BIOS for my 5100, and i am noticing one problem thus far, that it shuts down when my computer isn't even hot. Now i know that this upgrade was supposed to fix how hot this thing can get, because before the upgrade, when i had A04, you could cook an egg on the bottom of this thing before it shut down due to the heat. Now, it is getting 1/10th the heat it used to get, and it shuts down, and i lose everything i am doing. Before, i had it one for 10 mins before it shut down, and i lost a lot. Can this be fixed?

What is the best way to flash Bios update on 64bit OS? CD-rom w/ 5cjy77usa.exe does not work. Says no boot filename received (PXE-E53). It is for M58-6234-A1U

A:Problems w/ Flash Bios Update via CD-rom.

Download the CD ISO file, and 'burn' to a CD.   Boot from that CD, you may need to change the boot order in the BIOS if it doesn't go to that drive before the HD.   It may ask if you want to change the model and serial number, reply No.

BIOS update installed 10-26-16 & computer has been running slow since it updated. Today, Excel suddenly gave error message that excel had ceased to work & was shutting down. Now, it opens, gives the error message & shuts down. I cannot access my files. I have tried repairing Excel, same problem. Reloade Excel, same problem.  Nothing else has been done to the computer so it has to have something to do with the BIOS update. Is there a way to remove the update?

My computer is a HP 15 Notebook PC, and I use Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit). I recently received notice of a important update regarding an HP Notebook System BIOS Update (AMD Processors). I tried doing the update, but it seems to behave strangely. Creating a restore point, checking available space, connecting to HP servers, and the downloading itself are all marked with a green check, but when it goes to installing, after a few seconds of it, a gray X box shows up beside installing, and all I can do is click 'next', and it leaves. What am I supposed to do? Is this update supremely necessary to keep using my computer as is? Model number: f100dx Product: J2X70UA//ABA

Hi @Nicmurg1? ,Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP 15-f100dx Notebook and issues with the BIOS update.I recommend to restore the BIOS defaults. You could restore the BIOS with this document selecting the reloading the BIOS default settings. Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system that might need updating. This is the only way I would do updates as they are made for your HP Notebook. I hope this helps. Thanks.

I updated my BIOS version before (around a month ago) but I just discovered that the HP Notebook System Bios Update (Intel Processor) was skipped. I actually cancelled this update and when I tried to do it again it didn't allow me anymore. I contacted the HP Chat Support at that time and they said my laptop was fine. I got a blue screen of death once and that was it. That was the only issue I had with my laptop. After that I updated to the latest version of the w10 Anniversary Update a week ago. I do not have any problems with it, my laptop is running smoothly. I haven't encountered any problems. I just reccently purchased this 2 months ago.  Well recently, I got an update in the HP Support Assistant regarding an update for the Intel Serial 10 Driver. I contacted the HP Chat Support and they said my laptop didn't need the driver. That it was a general update and not targeted to any specific PC. Long story short he said I didn't need it, I don't need to update and that my laptop was fine. The Windows 10 Anniversary update... Well updates everything the tech said. I was just wondering:1. Is the HP Notebook System BIOS Update (Intel Processor) a CRITICAL update that I really  need to find a link or something to update it?2. Is it harmful that I didn't update it?3. Do I really need to update it?4. Is it the reason that the HP Support Assistant notified me about the Intel Serial 10 Driver? My Driver Version is: 20.19.15.4377 I hope I provide... Read more

A great big OUCH!

You could try reflashing it with the correct one if it will get that far. But it probably wont even boot to floppy now... The only way I can think of is to remove the BIOS chip and reflaash it in a programmer

Thats exactly why I never flash a BIOS unless its absolutly needed.

ASUS Automatic Bios Update crashed system
It says there is no operating system on a clean system, so shoot, I will reload. Now on all hard drives it reads setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system parition. See setup log files for more information.

Not sure how you see logs if system can not operate. One of the drives was completely empty. Just had formated faster two drives in Raid before bios update a mistake I guess going to 5-2010 update sucks now. No computer any ideas and notice it use to ask to set up raid on startup by hitting F10 nothing similar now.

Am I screwed now, not sure if a start dvd would work or not as immediately after update it said I had no operating system which was just loaded. I did notice once I could get into DOS that instead of a C: Prompt there is a X: weired experience. Maybe figure out how to make a boot disc in win7 or maybe HP laptop not sure if that will help. Running repair from DOS but no luck

Hi all,

I've been having a couple problems with my PC recently relating to drivers etc, after some deliberation I was advised to update the BIOS.

I have a Dell XPS L421x and upon updating my BIOS from A04 to A14 my computer crashed and is now stuck in a boot cycle.

I have tried to system repair, which takes it to system restore - which I am almost certain cannot be done because of BitDefender anti-virus.

When trying to boot windows normally it comes up with 'starting windows', then flashes to a BSOD for a moment before restarting and doing the same thing over and over.

Has anybody got any suggestions as to what I can do?

Thanks!

Hi, I was doing a fresh install for a friend because her laptop would crash if the screen was closed and noticed she was running v1.0 bios on her Toshiba C50-b-14d laptop. I downloaded the newest version 5.1 from the official site and upgraded the bios. When I installed W10 it would install, and then freeze after the restart. I tried booting in safe but it said I couldn't because windows couldn't complete the install in safe mode. I tried to install again multiple times and the same problem every time.
I went into the bios and changed from CMS to UEFI and reinstalled. This time after the restart it got to the 'Getting Devices ready' screen and froze at 10%.
I have no idea what to try next. Any help would be appreciated.

i had recently built a new computer. after installing windows 7 everything was fine, except for during start-up it'd say 'no keyboard deteced'. which it wasn't detecting it because i couldnt acess bios during this. once i came to the windows log in screen, it was then reading the keyboard.

a few days ago i had a power outage during a thunderstorm and now a screen appears when turning on my computer giving me 2 options somehwat like 'continue start up' and 'enter a set up'. these are extremely general ideas of what it says but its not the usual 'start windows normally' screen. i would look but i'm currently at work since i cannot access the internet at home due to these problems lol.

the problem with this screen appearing is that since it is not detecting my keyboard at post, i have no where else to go. i've tried every usb port, as well as a ps/2 keyboard.

i either a. need to figure out how to get past this screen or not have it appear at all or b. figure out how to get it to detect my keyboard.

if you have any suggestions or info i'd really appreciate the help.

thanks.

A:odd post/bios screen, plus no keyboard detected @ post

you could try removing the CMOS battery on the motherboard and using the jumper to reset the BIOS to factory defaults.

Always us a known good PS/2 keyboard. USB is OK after you have everything setup but unless you enable Legacy USB support in the BIOS the USB keyboard may not be seen by the BIOS (I've had this exact problem).

If the PS/2 keyboard is not seen when plugged into the keyboard PS/2 port move it to the PS/2 mouse port.

I need to recover the bios on my elitebook. I've tried using the win+B key combo as outlined here http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02693833 but that doesn't seem to work (screen just stays dark, cpu fan is running). I now want to try the usb stick recovery method. So I downloaded the latest bios sp76205.exe and when I run it, I follow the instructions, but I never get the "HP System Bios Update Utility" to launch. After extraction of the files, nothing launches so I don't get any menu to choose to create a USB stick install. It is as-if the spXXXXX.exe is trying to install the bios locally to my workstation!... good thing it doesn't do that. How can I get a working HP System Update Utility or how can I launch the sp76205.exe is such a manner that I'll be presented with the menu to create a USB stick? Is there a commandline flag or something I need to launch it with?

The package runs, gives the "Extracting files..." progress bar then displays a dialogue entitled "TOSHIBA BIOS Package Ver.4.1.2" that says: "This BIOS package does not support this operating system."

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit on a Satellite 830R-143 with the short part no. PT32LE

Does anyone know what the problem is?

Hi

Do you have any problems with notebook?
If not then why you want to do the BIOS? Just because new BIOS was released?
I would not change anything if my notebook would run properly.

However, the BIOS update requires the VAP (value added package).
So be sure that this VAP is installed properly. If not, update this.
