USB Tablet and Extended Desktop - Swap Monitor

Q: USB Tablet and Extended Desktop - Swap Monitor

I have a Genius GPen 4500 USB graphics tablet (using the built-in Windows 7 driver), and would like to use it on my secondary monitor (which is 4:3, unlike my primary which is 16:9)

However, windows seems to have decided that the tablet is integrated into my primary monitor (according to "Tablet PC Settings" in the control panel - it shows "Pen Input Avaliable" for the "1. BENQ E2220HD" item and "No Pen or Touch...." for the "2. SyncMaster" item)

Running "Setup" from that window does not work, as the tablet still maps to the primary screen, and can't be used to click on the second screen.

Is there any way (even a registry hack) to change which monitor is used? Or to update the range for the tablet such that it maps to the second screen.

If it helps, the setup is a classic horizontal setup (1920x1080 on the left, 1280x1024 on the right)

P.S. Sorry if this has been asked/answered before, but both googling and a search of the forum failed, but I may not have been using the correct terms)

(I feel bad for doing this, but I would rather like an answer)
Bump, does anyone have a clue if this is possible / what I could do.
Changing the primary monitor is a possibility, but not one I would like, as I use this machine to play games, and they tend to be rather attached to the primary screen.

If you can boot into safe mode on the CRT screen, right click on that screen and select PERSONALIZE and then you should see two boxes to represent your screens. Click IDENTIFY monitors so you know which is which and then using the drop down box, select the correct screen and make this your MAIN Monitor

I've just upgraded to W7 with few problems. However I use an extended desktop with 2 monitors (Viewsonic - digital and Dell 2001FP - analog). The Dell is the second monitor and the desktop extended on it ok with Vista. However with W7 only part of the desktop is visible, the rest is off the screen. Is this an issue with the Dell driver? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I worked with 2 monitor displays attached to my PC extending the desktop view across both, but one of them has broke, now only using one display I have an annoying issue that my desktop workspace still appears to be extended, and as such certain pop ups from programs I use are still appearing in the extended area which I can no longer use.

The display/ screen resolution options with Win 7 seem very limited I cant work out how to get around this

A:2nd 2nd monitor broke but cant disabale extended desktop

I've just checked again running my mouse pointer around the edge of the screen it is not extended anymore (I uninstalled the broken monitor drivers and rebooted) but I still have the issue with the program option pop up menus not appearing in my screen (I have to just press the ENTER key to close the options or the program locks up). I'm feeling I may have to re install the software I guess

Hello,
First of all, I highly appreciate any help I can get through these forums. My problem is so stressful that anything would be good atm.

Ok, so my problem:

I can't get extended desktop to work since I have Windows7. It allways worked flawlessly on windowsXP pro and I used it on windows7 aswell for a little while.
But all of the sudden my second monitor won't boot from hibernation correctly anymore.
When I turn on extended desktop, my second monitor will boot and everything seems to be working perfectly, but unfortunately this only lasts for a couple of seconds before the monitor goes to black again. Windows still sees it as a working monitor and I can drag stuff on that screen.

There's a huge list what i've tried allready:
- Changing monitors and cables ( tried 3 ).
- Dual-link and single-link DVI connectors.
- Updating ATI drivers from 9.7 up till 10.9 ( current )
- Format windows 7
- Checking resolution and hertz
- Replacing the PSU ( old one died, new psu has 200Watt more and runs on 700 and should be enough )

From this point on I contacted a Club3D tech:
- Bios flash to latest version
- Motherboard chipset drivers updated
- Clear CMOS

The Club3D tech analysed the problem and thought it was a timing issue in the graphics card and told me to send it in for repairs.

The card has been tested on:

Benchmarks: 3dmark06 2560x1600, 3dmark vantage 2560x1600.

Hi, so I'm having an issue with a monitor that I'm trying to do extended display with. I suspect the issue is with my computer because I can do dual view or duplicate display with the second monitor but not extended display though from what I've seen on youtube and forums I should be able to do it. I've updated my drivers for my graphics card but it doesn't seem to be issue. I've been doing a web crawl to see if my graphics card is compatible with an extended display setup but also no specific answers although I don't see why not. My cousin has virtually the same computer and computer specs I have and has been able to do it so I don't see why there should be an issue.

Here are the specs:

I'm having problems with my wallpapers intended to span the length of both monitors....

My main display is on the right instead of the left and when i use a wallpaper that spans both screens it starts on the main display on the right and spans to the left screen instead of starting on the left screen and spanning to the right. Is there anyway to fix this other than moving the 2 monitors physically or changing my main display to the left monitor?

It works fine if i make the left monitor my main display but i use the right monitor as my main because it has internal speakers and if it doesn't get any signal it goes to sleep muting the sound.

Hi, I have an ATI card configured for 3 monitors. Each monitor is set to 1280x720 and the total desktop area (desktop is extended to all monitors) is 3840. That seems to work fine as long as none of the monitors gets disconnected. When one of the monitors
is temporarily disconnected then settings on the remaining monitors change to something rather random - not even close to what I had them configured initially. When I re-connect the previously disconnected monitor then the whole setup is still messed up. The
worst thing is that after re-booting the machine the 'messed-up' settings seem to be preserved and I need to manually re-configure each monitors. Is there a way I could save the settings and then restore them during windows 7 bootup? Any other ways of dealing
with the above? Thanks, Bogdan

As far as I know, the only way to save settings is to use a third-party tools.
My personal recommendation is

In Actual Multiple Monitors you are able to create several profiles and quickly select the needed one by clicking Win+P hotkey.

Is there an HP cable to connect this monitor USB through the DP port without wasting any of the usb ports? 3) my preference would be for a portable monitor for the mini desktop that when disconnected worked as a tablet. Is there such a product in HPs portfolio? ThanksHugo Silva

I have just been given a 2nd monitor. It has only a VGA connection. My existing monitor has both VGA and DVI but the DVI port has been non functional for some time.

My graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series which has 2 DVI ports but no VGA.

I was using my old monitor attached VGA cable to DVI port using an adaptor (DVI M, VGA F) to attached to the graphics card which worked fine.

I have replaced this with the new monitor, which works great with that setup.

The old monitor I have set up using a DVI cable to VGA port attached using an adaptor (DVI F, VGA M) to attach to the monitor. The monitor is detected by Windows (and AMD Vision CC) but only displays No Signal. I have checked the refresh rates and screen resolution and they are fine. Drivers are up to date. There is nothing in the BIOS that should affect the display. I have had dual display with extended desktop working in the past with an LCD TV as the 2nd monitor (using HDMI). I have 2 DVI cables, the problems exists with both.

This confuses me. What is different about a VGA cable + adaptor compared to a DVI cable + adaptor setup?

To get this to work do I need to:

Tweak some setting? If so can anyone suggest what?
Buy a new VGA cable + adaptor?
Buy a VGA to DVI cable?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi - I have recently acquired a new work computer with 1 widescreen Dell monitor (Dell E228WFPc 1680 x 1050, Monitor A) and my older 4:3 monitor (E178FPc 1024 x 768, Monitor B). The graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce GT 620. I cannot get them both working at the same time on an extended display.

One is plugged into (excuse my slightly less-than-technical language here!) the 'main' monitor port and one has a VGA-DVI adapter.

When either monitor A or B is plugged into the main port without the other plugged in, they work fine.

When monitor A, the widescreen, is plugged into the main port and B is plugged in via the adapter, A works perfectly and the PC detects monitor B (if I set it to extend displays, programs open in that screen but I cannot see anything - the screen is completely black).

When B is plugged into the main port and A is on the adapter, B boots up normally until the point where I would usually see my Windows log in, when it goes black and I can only see and move the cursor.

I thought it would be a case of adjusting the screen res down so that they weren't so drastically different - in fact I'm still sure that would help but I can't get the smaller monitor B to let me do so and it doesn't seem to make a difference when widescreen monitor A is plugged into the main port with B in the other?

A:Extended display monitor problems with one widescreen and one 4:3 monitor?

That is usually normal. Try dragging a window over to the other monitor and see if it works.

Hi,

Today I plugged an hdmi to vga cable into my Win 8 sony vaio, and I plugged the other VGA side of the cable into an acee 22" monitor. I then chose from the right hand windows 8 panel to "extend to monitor", the laptop screen went black, the monitor screen remained without signal (extended screen did not show on monitor) and now the laptop screen is black.

I am now stuck and both laptop and monitor screen not working.

I tried unplugging cable, pressing fn and all the f1 to f12, shift, windows button but nothing is working.

I pressed off button then switched laptop back on and it showed the sony vaio logo on laptop then the screen went black again.

Please tell me how could I return my laptop screen to work and stop the screen extension which is not working and which I am sure is the case.

Any buttons on keyboard to click at all?

Any solution is highly appreciated.

Thank you

It's stuck in an extended screen it seems, boot into Safe Mode while you have all external monitors unplugged - Your Display is probably set to a resolution too high for both the external monitor and the laptop monitor, so you'll have to try "Boot to VGA mode" and I don't know where that is in the Windows 8 Boot GUI, if it is even in there at all.
Here is is- There are several ways to get to that from the Boot screen:

Hi everyone. I'm having a problem in Windows 7 with my dual monitor setup. Being a student, my laptop comes with me during the day to classes, but when I return to my desk, I have a dual monitor setup through a docking station. I haven't had a problem getting the displays to actually output in extended desktop. Instead, I can't keep them set that way. Installing any program, opening the system task monitor, letting the computer idle into sleep, or any process that makes the screen "flash" sets the screens back to clone. It's even more annoying that for some reason, I cannot get the system to recognize the external monitor through the display settings. To get around this, I've set up schemes that I default to through the Intel Graphics card. I know it's a minor irritation, but somehow I managed to bypass that default in Vista Ultimate and can't quite figure out how to do it in 7.

I attempted to fill out my system specs in my profile as best as possible, but please let me know if any information more is needed from me. I apologize if anything is missing, this is my first post. Thanks for your help!

Hi, I have a really annoying problem with desktop icons.
I use 2 monitors. 1920x1200 is the main dislay and 1600x1200 is another one for extended desktop. The thing is that I don't need it all the time so I'd like to switch the extended desktop on and off when I need it. Problem is that entering the ex. desktop just somehow changes the grid (it seems that the grid becomes more compressed in vertical direction). That means that it always messes my icons up. I really don't know why do the Windows change the grid when I do not change the reolution or just anything that could possibly affect the main screen. Can I do anything about it?

Thanks

A:Desktop icon grid changes when using extended desktop

Welcome to Seven Forums APrince. I suspect the issue is caused by the different resolutions of the 2 screens. Does the primary desktop display revert to normal when the desktop isn't extended? (I am assuming it does). I'd suggest if you want to keep the original layout while in extended mode, that you try the Free Fences, and see if it can maintain the layout while extended. Or try IconRestorer which enables you to save up to two layouts for each resolution.

This is a rather odd problem. I use an basic SVID wire to a three plug audio/video cable from my laptop into a 10 meter extension, then into the tv. When I click to extend my desktop, it dosn't recognize the television. If i unplug the extension cable and plug directly into the television, then I can extend my desktop and it works fine. After I have the desktop extended, I can plug back into the extension video/audio cable, and it remains extended. And still works fine. I assume I cant extend with the extension cable plugged in becuase the cable is to long for the information to pass through and return to the laptop fast enough to change the settings.
The issue is:
Sometimes when I drag something onto the television side, my desktop flips. MY laptop screen appears on the television and my television screen appears on my laptop. My mouse also flips to the other screen, but though i see it on the television, its actually on the laptop side. If i click on the laptop side I will click on things that i see on the television side. If I click on sometime on the television side, instead it clicks on something on the laptop's side. If I log out, and log back in, my screens are flipped back around, but then I have to extend my desktop again.

I have acquired an HP Envy M6 laptop (AMD version with ATI graphics) and I want to do a factory reset on it so I can customize it for me. Problem is the screen is broke so I have been using it with an external monitor until I can order the replacement screen. Problem I am running into is the extended monitor will not show BIOS screens or any of the recovery screens because no signal is directed to the extended monitor until it gets into windows 8. Is there a way to make it show boot screens or any screens it cycles through prior to getting into windows?

The broke screen illuminates and occasionally shows some of the desktop at the very bottom but I cannot see anything that I need to. I would like to go ahead and reset it so when I get the new screen it will be ready to go. Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

I recently purchased an ASUS laptop running Win Vista Premium. It has ATI Radeon HD3470 graphics and runs an Intel Duo P8600 processor.

I am trying to use a BENQ FP202W 20" LCD screen as a second monitor using the VGA output of the laptop. The problem is I can't get the screen to run in native resolution of 1680x1050. The option just does not appear in Vista or in the ATI Catalyst Control Centre.

I've downloaded the latest drivers for the video card and the latest version of Catalyst Control as well as the latest BENQ monitor drivers and nothing has changed.

Has anyone had this problem and is there a solution or do I just live with what I have.

Thanks in advance.

A:Extended Monitor Will Not Share Desk Top

Hi Reason, welcome to the Seven Forums.

There is no way you can use your laptop as a secondary display for your desktop simply by connecting it with VGA to your desktop. It does not work.

You can connect external display to a laptop to use multi display mode on laptop. If you want to use multiple displays on desktop, you need to use monitors or TV's equipped with VGA, DVI or HDMI. Laptop display is impossible to use as a secondary display for your desktop without some heavy tweaking.

Can I use my laptop display for my desktop?

With some restrictions, you can use laptop as a secondary display over the network. Here's how: Bits Bytes n' 42: Using the spare laptop as a secondary monitor.

Please keep in your mind this is not suitable for graphic intensive stuff:

Since the desktop is captured, streamed over the LAN and recreated at the destination end this is generally ideal for the static text windows. But it is quite acceptable for small sized videos as well.

Hi there,

I found a small 16 inch LCD tv laying around, which I want to use as an extended display.
My graphics card (GTX 285 Black Edition) as 2 DVI-I outputs, one already in use for my 24" Dell screen, so I bought a DVI to HDMI cable.
Now, my screen extends with it, but not on the way it should.
2/3 of the screen in height is displaying great, but the bottom section does not.
the left side (about 2/3 of the width of the screen) displays the right side, with a kind of green triangle over it, and the right side displays the left.
I included a picture, so you can see what I mean.

Hi
In the eternal battle between myself and technology the computer has won another battle.
I wished to avail myself of an extended desktop using 2 monitors. As everything I touch seems to go wrong I thought I would start with an old computer running ME and a Millenium PCI card and see what would happen. This worked perfectly I added the card, installed the drivers plugged in the second monitor did the business with the display options and all was as it should be.
Then I decided to move on to the computer I really wished to use and this is where things started to go wrong.
The computer I wish to use is a socket 775 ECS 945 GCT- M V1 0i 945 GC which has Intel GMA 959 (224mb) graphics (I hope this means something as I have copied it from the computer documentation). I also bought a Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS grapics card (this has the correct fitting, PCI express, for my motherboard.
Following the same procedure as my initial attempt I arrived at the position where the Nvidia card worked perfectly but the original Intel graphics had disappeared, leaving me with a single display monitor.
I removed the Nvidia card and the Intel graphics reappeared.
How do I get to the position in which both sets of graphics are working at the same time thus allowing me to use 2 monitors?

It kept showing up as a black screen with the cursor on it, or weird bits of my desktop, so as I was trying to get it to work I played around with my display settings and set extended display mode on.
Now, if I boot into windows regularly, it is just a black screen, and if I connect the TV and the monitor, the TV is a black screen and the monitor goes into sleep mode (no input). My display works fine in safe mode, and I have tried changing the safe mode resolution (which doesn't carry over) and using regedit to change the x/y resolution values for normal mode, but that did nothing. The most quirky thing is that if I try to boot into VGA mode my monitor also goes into sleep mode. If I use msconfig and choose to boot at base video, my safe mode resolution is appropriately 640x480, but if I try to boot normally, it is the same as if I used VGA mode (no input), I also cannot do a system restore (no save points).
I have an AMD Radeon HD 5670 graphics card and would greatly appreciate any help.

I have read this post: Generic Non-Pnp Monitor problem please help

and it seems similar to my problem but not quite the same. Before I proceed, I wanted to ask if the above solution will likely work for my problem.

I have an hp pavilion pc windows 7 with a radeon 5770, connected to two displays. I started up the computer about 4 months ago. The two displays are:

1)a pioneer vsx 1020 a/v receiver (in turn connected to my toshiba hdtv) via hdmi

2)an old (2001 or so) acer 1916 monitor

Everything was working fine for a while. I could control music selection (pandora) on the acer monitor while just having the a/v receiver on and not the hdtv, and it would be in dual display mode (both hdtv and monitor would default to 1280X1024 resolution---lowest resolution between the pair). Or I could extend displays and view hdtv in full ~1920X1000 hd resolution. When I chose extended display settings, it would recognize the acer monitor and recommend the correct resolution per this image: http://www.greenandtheblue.com/homet...desktop_PC.png.

Just a few days ago, I turned on the a/v receiver and the acer monitor (without turning on the hdtv) and the display was just the background and the resolution was too large on the acer monitor. I checked devices and now it shows "generic non pnp monitor". Also, in the catalyst control center settings, it shows the correct monitor (whereas windows config shows generic pnp) but it shows max reported res as 1600 X 1200 which is not ... Read more

A:generic non pnp monitor/extended display problem

I found a solution...first I reinstalled the hp monitor drivers under the hp recovery manager GUI. Then, no sound was coming, so I put default to both ATI Radeon and Realtec sound devices instead of just ATI or just Radeon which was the case when I checked. No idea what happened except maybe HP installed some updates and they wiped out the old monitor driver settings.

We have an Optiplex 7440 AIO that needs to be setup as a tutorial PC in a teaching space.  There are also two projectors that display the image on the wall.  Both of the 7440 video outputs consisting of one HDMI and one DP (which is converted to HDMI) are delivered down to a Crestron switcher which pushes the output to the 2 projectors via a different topology.
The actual configuration is a little more complicated than this, but I have simplified to the above configuration in order to troubleshoot.
Now what we need is to have a clone of the main 7440 screen on one projector and the 2nd projector having an extension of the desktop so they can display extra charts/windows.  When going into Windows Display settings, all three screens are detected and are in an extended state which is all good. When attempting to modify the setup and clone the 7440 image with either screen 2 or screen 3, an error is reported "Unable to save display settings".
I have updated the video driver to 20.19.15.4474 (A08) and also BIOS 1.7.6, but the problem still exists.
Is it possible to have a mix of extended and cloned displays such as this on this model?
Looking forward to your reply

Hello: I purchased a ZBook 15 G2 Mobile Workstation in February 2016 and noticed something I didn't expect with this computer.  When I play video on both screens the external screen is playing at 15fps.  I saw this with my older EliteBook but expected that it would be cured since the new one includes a video card.  I assumed that with a video card that both monitors could process video at the given frame rate. How do I make use of the video card or other setting to maximize the video playback quality (and other graphics) on the external monitor? Details: I have a ZBook 15 inch G2 Mobile Workstation with an NVIDIA Quadro K610M Graphics card, am running Windows 7, have 16 GB RAM and a 7200 RPM hard drive.  I am using a VGA (XVGA) output.  I believe there is also a thunderbolt 2 output. I am using a software called TrialDirector that utilizes Windows Media Player.  The video is playing on both screens, but the screens are set in Extended Screen mode.  The software mirrors the video onto both screens. There must be a way to set the onboard screen to run from the onboard graphics and the external to run from the card. Thanks in advance.

I extend my Tecra laptop to an external monitor and has worked fine until a couple of days ago where the monitor screen has suddenly started showing a red tint on the screen whereas my laptop screen has a normal colour on it.

I have tried 2 different monitors and 2 different VGA cables so it must be a problem with the display settings or hardware in the laptop. Anyone have an idea of why this is happening?

A:Tecra notebook - Red tint on extended monitor

It is not easy to give you some concrete answer to your question. In my opinion this should be checked by Toshiba service provider.

I don't know which Tecra do you have and which video-out ports it has but if there is also HDMI port available try to test it with your TV.

This is a strange problem...

My secondary monitor automatically dims itself unless I engage it either by pulling up the context menu or clicking a window. Simply bringing my mouse into its area doesn't brighten it, and it automatically dims as soon as I finish a task on that monitor.

Say I open a text document, click save and close it, as soon as the document closes the monitor dims.

I've searched around my video card's driver and firmware and I can find nothing, but I suspect this is a feature of said card.

Any ideas?

A:Second Monitor (Extended display) Automatically Dims

Is this on your ASUS display? If so, check to see if there's a way to turn off ASCR* from the display's menu.

*ASCR (ASUS Smart Contrast Ratio) Technology automatically adjusts the luminance of the backlight for better displays according to the image contents, and improves the contrast ratio to 12000:1 – resulting in more realistic depictions of night scenes during games or movies

I currently have a 15" PC with a 3200x1800 resolution. Using Windows 8.1. I have the scaling to highest.

My 2nd external monitor is 1920 x 1200.

I am trying to extend my desktop to the 2nd monitor but is there a way to use different scaling for both the PC and monitor?

I have unchecked "use scaling for all my displays" but no matter what, I still can't change the scaling on the external display. It uses the scaling settings of my PC (scaling set to highest because of 3200x1800 resolution) and because of that, the monitor scaling shows everything large.

Thank you.

I just purchased a brand new Sharp HD Smart TV and have been using it occasionally as an extended/dual desktop from my laptop. The only thing is that there is a very slight delay between the input from the computer and the display on the TV. I don't know if this is normal or not as the delay is only a split-second but I want to use it for gaming purposes so I want to get rid of the delay if at all possible. The spec on my computer are as follows:

Windows 8 Pro
Intel Core i7-4800MQ CPU @ 2.7GHz
32 GB RAM
GeForce GTX 780M graphics card

If anyone has any tips I would aprecciate it. Thanks

A:Slight lag on extended desktop

It turns out there is a "Game Mode" setting on the TV that eliminates the lag.

This is something I am curious about. I have not been able to figure out a way to have one desktop background image on my laptop, and another on the other monitor.

I am sure this is possible, but I have not been able to figure it out.

I found a site that I thought had the answer but it required having a DVI out as well as a VGA out.

Seeing I am on a laptop, I am kind of limited. Anyone got any suggestions, maybe something blatantly obvious I missed.

Thanks ahead of time for any ideas. Maybe imposing an image over one or the other. Dunno.

A:Two different backgrounds on extended desktop?

Here's a free piece of software via tutorial that should do it for you:

If you didn't want to do that, you could've make a double wide wallpaper like the dual & triple monitor ones by just pasting two different wallpapers together in the middle.

Okay I've had this problem before (with Windows 8.1) and this is generally the reason and solution (I'm using a notebook and an external display for extended desktop):

At Location 1 I have a Dell E2414H Monitor that is 1920x1080 resolution.

At Location 2 I have a 26" Samsung TV I use for a monitor.. I forget the resolution but it is not 1920 x 1080.

Neither supports the other's resolution so the first time I plug into the other display I have to go to settings and change it to a supported resolution to get it to work, however, this has always worked.

So, the Dell monitor was working just fine on Windows 10. I upgraded a week or two ago, and it worked just fine. Then I went to Location 2 and plugged my notebook into the Samsung TV. I changed the resolution and it worked. Now back at Location #1 I plug into my Dell monitor and change it to 1920 x 1080 and it does not turn on. The monitor always says "Going into Power Save Mode" as soon as I plug it in to the computer or turn it on / off..

Here is an interesting tid-bit that might help troubleshoot this: Windows 10 settings obviously sees the monitor is plugged in because instead of showing 1 screen in the setting it shows 2 screens and gives the normal "Extended Desktop", "Duplicate Displays" etc. etc. options. However, I'm also getting the message that there is no signal from the VGA cable.. I don't think the cable went bad nor the port on my computer. I mean the Dell monitor was working... Read more

A:Extended Desktop will not turn on

That is because the resolution is out of range of the other monitor.

Hey everyone, well I can't seem to get my second monitor to work? I think its just my DVI port on my video card, but I don't think the port is dead or anything, I think its more of just a vista problem. I have a 22'' Samsung 225BW and an Envision 17'' monitor (can't remember the product num right now), and a custom built computer using an ATI X1650.

I just reinstalled all the drivers (for my monitors and my video cards) and still no help, it seems to recognize that there is a second monitor plugged in, it just doesn't want to get enabled

Is it possible to have a taskbar on an extended desktop? If so how do I do this?

A:Taskbar on an extended desktop

If you mean like a second monitor, I responded to a poster this way:

To get it on the second (and off the first) unlock it and drag.

To get it on both at once, you need an aftermarket program (I don't provide much help for those)

An example (which I am NOT promoting)- http://www.mediachance.com/free/multimon.htm

Using anything not made by Mr.Gates et al is at your own risk.

I wish to create an extended (dual) desktop for my system. How do I go about doing so, and what are the best ways to do it? I will either be using a 19" LCD and 13" CRT or a 19" CRT and a 13" CRT. The 13" is my current monitor, and I will be getting a new one soon; the 13" will be my extended monitor. (obviously)

I'm running XP Pro. My current video card is a Radeon 7200, 64 MB DDR, VGA, s-video and composite output, composite-input, 4x AGP pro.

Can I get away with just buying a decent quality PCI video card for the extended desktop, or should I really just get a new AGP video card? The main thing I see about using my current card, is that I don't have a DVI output, and might be using a LCD as my main monitor. If I could get feedback on this for both the LCD/CRT setup and the CRT/CRT setup, that would be great.
If I can get any and all info on this, that would be great. I don't really know how I want to go about doing this, but just that I want to do it and there are some really different options for this. Thanks!

A:creating an extended desktop

Kind of hard to add another AGP card since there is only one AGP slot per motherboard so that option is out. Just get a good PCI card and it will work just fine. YOu just have to decide what you want, and find the matching connection type on the monitor you want.

I've set up an extended desktop onto my HDTV from my laptop and all is working reasonably well (a few challenges to be overcome) but I have a question regarding functionality.
Is there any way that I can "scroll" accross so that I can view the extended desktop on my primary monitor (laptop)?
Very often the kids are actually watching the HDTV so I can't access icons etc that are on the extended desktop when I want to!! and it's driving me up the wall (yes and the kids too!!)
In case it matters I have an ATI Mobility Radeon 4500 graphics card on a Toshiba Satellite L550 laptop

Hi budgie,
Perhaps the solution is to add the desktop toolbar to the taskbar.
Right click on the taskbar, select Toolbars, and click desktop.

Thanks,

Try running your games in window mode instead of full screen. When the game is in a window it can be dragged to the TV screen.

When you have extended desktop with two or more screens it's better to run most things in windows instead of full screen.

I have two monitors and when I boot up my computer the UEFI splash screen appears on my smaller second monitor, rather than on the main monitor where I want it, but the login screen appears on the main monitor. As I normally only switch the second monitor on when I want to put something on it to avoid obscuring what is on my main monitor this is rather irritating.

I am assuming that the reason for this problem is that my main monitor has an identity number 2 and the secondary monitor is numbered 1.

My setup is :-
Windows 8.1, 64 bit;
Asus RAIDR Express PCIe SSD;
Asus GT630-SL-2GD3-L GPU;
Asus SABERTOOTH Z97 MARK 1 Motherboard, BIOS version 0602;
Processor Intel i7-4770S @3.1 GHz;
Kingston Technology XMP Beast Series 32GB 2400MHz DDR3 Memory.

Monitors :-
iiyama Prolite XB2776QS, (27 inch);
Dell u2412m, (24 inch).
I have tried uninstalling the drivers for the Dell monitor and rebooting the computer but it still comes back with an identity number of 1. There is nothing in the Nvidia control centre to enable me to swap the numbers.

Is there any way of swapping the identity numbers over?

Viv

PS. The iiyama is connected from the DVI port to the DVI port on the graphics card, the Dell connects from a DVI port to the HDMI port on the graphics card.

A:How do I swap monitor identity numbers?

The port that the monitor is connected to, and how many monitors are connected, determines the monitor number. The only way to change it is to switch which connector a monitor is connected to. The Video card determines what screen the BIOS splash screen shows on. I have three monitors on my GT640. Monitor 1 is on the HDMI, monitor 2 and 3 on DVI. Right now my BIOS POST Screen and the Windows 8 Boot screen show on Monitor 2. Monitor 1 is set as the main monitor so the logon screen etc shows on it. I would have to set monitor 2 as my main monitor to get it all to show on the one screen. Or swap cables around so my 22 inch wide screen is connected to the DVI connector. That's just the way it is. The video card sets the numbers. If I unplug monitor 1 the numbers will shuffle. What was 2 becomes 1 and what was 3 becomes 2. Drivers have nothing to do with it.

Hi guys

I have read quite a few forums to try and find an answer to my problem, however everything I have found and tried has not worked. Please read bellow and see of anything pops into mind to help.

Problems:
I am extending my display to a Dell monitor and the screen wont fit the monitor exactly. I have tried all possible resolution options as well as going into the Advanced settings for the monitors display settings with no success (changing the monitors screen refresh rate - only the 24Hz option works). I have not tried to alter any graphic card options etc and took a screen shot of what I think the graphics card is, just in case it helps.
Another issue which I have noticed is that when moving my mouse left and right from display to display, it gets "caught" at the bottom of the screen but not at the top. I know its from the positions that are set for display 1 and 2 in the display options menu - as in the screen shot. Is there anyway to overcome this? Because when I move the screens around it still gets caught because of the different sizes of the screens.

I have attached an image with a few screen shots of all settings I have been playing with as well as a picture of the problem (Screen2).

I don't plan on playing games, just using it cuz A) Its pretty cool B)It'd help increase efficiency in my engineering school work documents which requires I have a lot of things open at the same time.

G'day all
A newbie to posts but this one is giving me the pip and I've tried all the 'official' channels.

I have a Fujitsu T4220 laptop/tablet running Win XP on an Intel 965 chipset. I have an external monitor that I use when docked and ideally run it in "Extended Desktop."

This all works fine, until the computer returns from screen-saver, reboots, or I discovered this morning, I open Task Manager. Then the screens flicker (like autodetect stuff) and then reset to dual display. I can return them to Extended Desktop using a shortcut to an Intel 'mode' function, but I have to do this every time.

I have updated:-
Intel drivers (and they have checked and found no problem their end)
Spoken to Fujitsu, and they suggests Microsoft
Checked Microsoft (who don't seem to like to talk to you but push you to KB) and found a hot-fix to restore extended desktop after hot-docking etc. I downloaded, crossed my fingers and installed.

No problems but didn't solve the problem.

So now I'm stumped. The only solution I'm being offered is to take the computer back in for service, but I don't think it is a hardware fault.

To cap it all in the last 2 weeks I've got the Office 2003 opens slow if you click on files in explorer (but fine if you just open Word/Excel directly). So I feel I'm going backward.

Any ideas greatfully received.

Lloyd.

Is there some sort of software that would allow me to view other displays, from an extended desktop setup, on my computer's screen (the primary display)? Basically I'm asking if there is a way to easily switch between which display is shown on my computer monitor, without actually changing the configuration of the extended desktop.

For example, I might want to emulate display 2 (a television) on display 1 (my notebook), without actually deactivating display 1.
Display 2 would be projected onto both screens, and display 1 would just be hidden but still be active.

I just don't know how else to explain this crazy concept...

Hi, trying to setup an extended desktop on a crt, to output my tuner card and for video editing. I'm using WinXP Pro sp2, DirectX 9.0c and a Saphire X550 PCI-E, with the pc-monitor on vga and the tv on s-vid.

The tv itself recieves a signal but the pictures distorted - theres these white choppy bands zigzagging across the whole screen. Here is a pic (taken with a camera-phone, sorry) of the extended desktop in windows...

Now the weird thing is while i get the above in windows, the tv gets a perfect signal when the pc is booting, ie the POST information shows up fine...

I'm confused why when windows kicks in i get the distortion. Tried messing around with refresh rates, different profiles, etc but no joy. I also tried the following with no success:

- tried the 5.11 catalyst drivers
- tried the 5.13 catalyst drivers
- tried the omega drivers
- tried tweaking with ati tools

Any idea's, ive spent weeks on this problem and its driving me insane. Any info/help appreciated.

I have an older gateway laptop. I took it and plugged into a second monitor the other day and chose extended desktop - I love that feature on my other laptop!

Now it's back in it's usual place without a second monitor. In the graphics display settings it shows monitor 2 as inactive. The "extended desktop" is not checked and output to notebook is checked.

Some of my program menus are opening out to the far right, tho, as if I had the extended monitor set up. I can see it zipping off into nothing but I can't get it to relocate on my notebook monitor for anything.

Suggestions? I have rebooted, turned off and turned on, etc. No idea what to do next.

Oh, yeah, it's running windows xp pro.

Thanks

I think when you go into desktop properties then advances you need to dig into the 'video card' properties and see if there is a setting in there refering to the expanded desktop....

I can get all monitors working with eyefinity as a huge extended display but this is annoying for maximizing windows and videos.

Only way I seem to be able to get them all working at all is by setting to duplicate display so the same screen is on all 3. This is done using a DVI cable(with VGA adapter), a HDMI cable, and an active mini displayport to dvi adapter and cable.

When I try to separate them as an extended desktop on the screen resolution panel it actually is combining 2 of the monitors together and I am unable to make changes.

Just want a 3rd display to function like a 2nd does. Help plz!

Hello,i have an issue with windows aero and extended desktop with two monitors. When i am switching back to one monitor Windows Aero is working without any issues. When i am changing my graphic settings to extend desktop with two monitors the theme will changed back. The tricky thing is, when i use "clone" to second monitor aero is working.Any ideas? I am using the following graphic adapters: Intel Q965/q963 Express Chipset Family. (both with the same driver newest version from intel)ThxMario

A:Windows 7 Aero Extended Desktop

Hi Mario,

If the graphics memory is 256MB, it is required to update to the latest driver version and then check this issue again. Please also contact the display card manufacturer for more information.

Thanks,

Using Windows XP on a laptop, I right clicked on the desktop, went to graphics options, then output to... then clicked on extended desktop by mistake, now all I get is a blank screen that I can't seem to reset. I've tried all the function shortcuts but they don't seem to work. I've also tried resetting the computer but that don't work either. Is the only way of resetting this to connect the laptop to a seperate monitor or something??

Cheers

In Jan. 2016 I had an HP Pavilion All-in-One 27 -n110 (Touch), Ser. #[personal information removed], and I purchased the xtended warranty in May 2016, , Order #[personal information removed]. fpr $129.99 and tax of $7.80, for a total of $$137.79. Due to problems with the touchscreen and numerous contacts with HP, they finally sent me the HP Envy All-in-One PC 27-n014, Ser. #[personal information removed].
See Case #[personal information removed].  Andy H of HP Support called me to let me know that HP was sending my the new Envy so He could close the Case #. I explained about purchasing the extended warranty, and said that he should transfer the warranty to the new desktop (Envy) and I would close the case.  He said the warranty would be transferred. I received the Envy on 6/29/16. I keep getting pop-ups advising me that my warranty period expires on 6/29/17. and I should purchase an extended warranty. I checked with online HP support today, and there has been no transfer of the warranty.  Please advise.

Hello everyone,

I'm using multiple displays (extended) with a laptop and a monitor.
I use the monitor above the laptop and not alongside it.
this works fine, except everytime I lock my laptop (which I do several times a day) - the screen then defaults back to the right of the laptop monitor.

I've searched the web, but found nothing about it.

thanks and regards,
dan

Hi, I am having a problem with my set up and can't seem to find any information on my specific issue.

I am running Win 7, with two LCD monitors for extended desktop. This mourning, after leaving my PC on all night, I discovered blue colored horizontal lines over my web browser(Firefox and Explorer) and other applications on my second LCD display(not the first/main). But not over the background image or video.

When a video is played the lines appear over the control panel and toolbar, but not the actual movie. Used VLC player. Windows media player does not show the lines.

THe blue lines seem to only be over lighter colored areas. Mostly white or gray. In a video game like Crysis, the lines are only over clouds, but the rest of the game looks fine.

I recently downloaded and installed Display Fusion, for mutliple backgrounds and other functionality with extended desktops a few days ago. I also installed the RAGE AMD driver "fix." About a week ago.

Processor: Intel Core i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz 3.40 GHz
RAM: 8.00 GB
System Type: 64-bit OS

Graphics Chipset AMD Radeon HD 6700 Series

Hi,

Running xp os.

I have my desktop extended and when I open an image with windows pictue and fax viewer on my main desktop all is fine I can drag it onto the extended desktop fine but if I start the slideshow it always shows on the main monitor never on the extended is a way to get it to show on the extended one?

A:Picture and fax viewer on extended desktop??

It maybe as simple as verifying the main desktop is where you have designated it for both apps. Your fax viewer maybe set by its default to start on the main. If you move your main to the extended screen see if your fax viewer starts on on the extended one. If so then it is the fax app. It may or may not be able to do what you need. Check online for any support form its manufacturer.

Hi,

I have finally managed to get some of my games to work on my HDTV which was one of my issues originally.

I have a ATI Radeon HD4350 PCI card which I have hooked up to my TV via the HDMI slot. I have the latest ATI Catalyst 10.3 (I think)

The problem now is that when I switch the display from my monitor to my 50 inch HDTV it works fine but if I extend the desktop to the HDTV the display is blurred on my HDTV and the picture on my monitor doesn't show in it's entirety (just the desktop background)

I have tried messing about with the resolutions and refresh rates in the ATI Catalyst but it just doesn't work.

My monitor is set to 1024x768 30hz refresh and my HDTV is set to a standard 1080 resolution as recommended in the Catalyst. I have also tried a 720 resolution but it's still blurred.

It seems as if the graphics card can't extend the desktop to a resolution that my TV recognises.

Maybe it's a issue with my TV?

Can anyone help me with the correct resolutions and refresh rates I need as the
Catalyst one's don't work.

Thanks

A:Extended Desktop Blurred on HDTV

You set the HDTV at an extended 1080p resolution. Then you open CCC - Desktop & Displays - Right Click the small HDTV at the bottom - Configure - Scalling - then set the Overscan/Underscan to 0%.

Hello,

A few days ago I was trying to get my tv to act as a monitor so that I could watch movies on it through my win7 PC.

The most annoying thing is that if I try to boot into VGA mode my monitor also goes into sleep mode.

I have an AMD Radeon HD 5670 graphics card and would greatly appreciate any help

OK, I have a Dell Optiplex 755 and on the back there is only one VGA video card port, but I am trying to connect two monitors and set one monitor up as the primary while using the second monitor as a extended view for the desktop of my primary monitor. What I have done is purchased a vga splitter cable with hopes of being able to set the monitors up the way I described above. First, I connected the vga male splitter cable into the vga video card and then connected one female cable end to a vga cable that is connected to a monitor and then connected the other vga female cable end into the vga cable for the other monitor. I noticed right away that both the monitors were on, but the display was showing the same desktop for each monitor. I don't want a duplicate of my desktop showing on another monitor I want to make one monitor an extension of the other monitor so I can have more room for my desktop. I tried changing settings in the display settings, but no matter what I do it just shows one monitor cloning what the other monitor has. When I click on identify it shows both monitors as being number 1. I have a feeling I am either going to have to add another vga video card or a dvi-d card? Can anyone explain to me why the vga splitter cable won't work?

A:Setting Up The Extended Desktop With VGA Splitter Cable

The only thing a splitter will give you is the identical display on both monitors; it won't work because its taking the single physical output connector and simply splitting it into two physical output connectors - it cannot be used to run two independent displays when the output from the video card is only a single feed.

You will need a dual port video card.

There appears to be 4 models of the Optiplex 755, the Tower takes a full height PCI-Express x16 video card, the Desktop and Small Form Factor versions take half height PCI-Express x16 cards, and the smallest ultra small Form Factor model can't take any card.

I have a Samsung LCD television model # LNS4095DX/XAA which I am trying to connect via HDMI to my Cyber Power Laptop with the following specifications:
NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M 2 GB
Intel Core i7
16 GB DDR3 Ram (in case that makes any difference)

I have just updated my drivers for Intel HD Graphics which is the tool through which I manage my Extended Desktop, but I am encountering a problem with scaling. When I output to the Extended Desktop, the edges of the screen are getting cut off. If I run it in Cloned Display mode it will cut off most of my icons on the left side of the screen and about 90% of the Start bar. The "Guide Me" help option provided with the Intel software says I need to go to Display, select Digital Television Samsung from the Select Display menu, then click on Display Scaling to adjust the scaling of the Extended Desktop. I have all those options well and good. There's just one problem: when I click on Display Scaling, I only have one option, which is Maintain Display Scaling.

At some point in the past I had this figured out and had adjusted the scaling to fit my Samsung television perfectly so that nothing was cut off. But over the weekend my wife used my laptop with an Extended Display on her Windows user account and now the scaling is messed up again, only this time I don't seem to have the option to adjust the scaling. Can someone please help me with this? I don't have a lot of experience with using Extended Display, but I want to be able t... Read more

A:Extended Desktop Display Scaling Issues

Okay, nevermind. I fixed it myself. I had to change the Refresh Rate from 59i Hz (default) to 60p Hz and viola! The Customize Aspect Ratio button appeared like magic. Hopefully this won't be completely in vain. Perhaps someone else having similar problems will find this and figure out how to fix things.

A:still problems with black and white tv extended desktop

Well there are a few things you can try/check.

1) Make sure you have the newest video drivers for your video card. These are available at the respective manufacturers site.

2) Make sure you are using the right connector. If you are using an adapter such as a SCART to connect your computer to the TV, make sure it is capable of supporting your video mode. SCART connectors only supports composite video and therefore if you are using S-Video you will only be able to receive a black and white picture.

I have an Acer Aspire 5732Z as my main monitor with a Philips 19PFL3504D TV as the second monitor. My problem is when I wake the laptop from sleep the Philips says "Format Not Supported". The only way to get a display is to unplug the vga cable and replug it. Then my laptop auto arranges all desktop icons, moving any icons on the Philips to the laptop. If the Philips monitor doesn't give the "Format Not Supported" message all will be ok.
I put the laptop in sleep mode at night and shut the Philips off. This doesn't happen in Dual Display Clone, just Extended Desktop. I have auto arrange icons and align icons to grid off.
I do not want to realign my icons every morning. Any ideas about what I can do?

A:Extended desktop problem coming out of sleep

Well I think it's solved. If I turn on the second monitor (Philips TV) before the laptop, I don't get the "Format Not Supported" problem and all icons remain in their original place. So I hope this can help others who may have this issue.

The problem I have though, is that everytime I start my computer up, it automatically starts in extended desk top mode, meaning I can't use the snap feature without having to go into control panel everytime to adjust the setting so the display only shows on monitor 1. It never stays put though when I restart my computer.

Also the Display selector option which generally pops up after pressing the Fn+F4 keys does not come up. Kindly Suggest on how these issues can be resolved.

I have been using a second monitor (Acer AL2216W) with my Vista Home Premium 64bit laptop as an extended desktop and all worked fine until yesterday. Now the 2nd monitor display is offset to the left, and I can't seem to find any setting that will correct it. Basically about 1.5" of blank space on the right side of the 2nd monitor that is unusable - it acts as though it has reached the edge of the display.

Any ideas?

Make sure you have x64 drivers for it or you will have issues with that monitor, I should know, it is the one I have.

Last time I checked (couple of months ago) Acer didn't have x64 drivers for it so I used the ones for the AL2216WD... works like a charm now.

I've got a user with a display issue that we're having trouble figuring out. The issue is that when the user has two external monitors connected to her machine, one using the regular vga port and another on an external display adapter, she can not lock her computer. If she does, then the display that is connected to the VGA port changes from extended desktop to dual display clone. Here is some info on her setup:

IBM T42 Laptop
Windows XP Pro SP3
ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 onboard
Village Tronic VTBook display adapter

Originally we thought it may have been the adapter we were using, at the time it was a Tritton See2 USB to VGA adapter. However, we tried another USB adapter, and finally the VTBook, all with the same results.

If I can provide any more info please let me know. Any help or suggestions are appreciated!

Does her settings on the Display Adapter allow for what she's doing? Some dual screens do and some don't. What is she running the resolutions at? Are they comparative with both screens meaning do both have the rate of say, 1400 X 900 or is one adapter limited to less or more specific resolutions? Jazz

Hi guys, long time reader, first time poster

I have the ATI radeon HD 2400 pro Display adapter and its worked fine for a couple of years now. But lately I started using the extended desktop feature, my main moniter is hooked up with the standard blue cable, and the new moniter is hooked up with a DVI cable, you see, the new moniter is actually a large LCD that doubles as a moniter, I like using it for watching videos because it is bigger and better looking (I use windows media player for this and watch AVI's) But every so often both screens will go black and the last half second or so of audio will loop, when my computer does this it stops responding to ANYTHING and I have to cut the power. And to clear up a couple of common problems, no I do not mess with display settings while using the extended desktop or watching the videos, and yes I have a full suite of antivirus/spyware software

BTW these videos needed the FFD show Audio & Video decoders to run, so I installed them, This could be any number of problems, including a problem with WMP, but the reason I think its a graphics card issue is because ive never had any problems until I extended my desktop
I googled as many things as I can think of, but all the results are cluttered with people whining "How do I extend a desktop" so you guys are my last hope before I have to *gasp* contact ATI! and we all know that will get me nowhere

Thanks for your time

Hi all,

I play a game called starcraft 2, when playing this game you drag the mouse off the right side of the screen in order to move right. I just setup an extended desktop with one screen to the right of the primary.

When playing this game and trying to move right the mouse just moves onto the extended screen. Is there a way to stop this happening so when I am running the game to lock the mouse into it so that it wont move across to the other screen (so I'd have to alt + tab the game to do so).

It is really annoying and means I cannot play at all, so I would REALLY apreciate any help that people can offer!

When I try to load Autodesk Alias while having an external monitor connected to my laptop both the screens go black and I'm left with just the cursor. I then have to do a reset by holding the laptop power button and then turn it on again. This only happens when the desktop is set to extended but when I have it as mirrored desktop the program loads fine. I've installed a new ssd in place off my hdd.

I wanted to do a fresh install of windows but when I did that I was getting the black screen problem with the external display as above. So I then cloned my existing hdd and then did a windows reset from the windows recovery option hoping that would solve the problem as it worked fine when the hdd was installed, but it didn't.

I think maybe something is missing, because everything works fine on the HDD but by refreshing windows on the SSD after cloning the HDD something must have been left out?

Don?t think it?s possible using an port replicator? you will need to use something like Dynadock U3 since the Dynadock supports an own graphic chip and it allows you to use tree displays (2 external and 1 internal)

Hello everyone,

I just finished putting together my first custom-built PC, using an ASUS P8Z68-VPRO/GEN3 motherboard with a 2700K CPU. For now, I'm just relying on the built-in graphics until the Radeon 7000 series are a little more affordable. I wanted to be able to set up a dual monitor configuration, so I purchased a couple of identical ViewSonic 22" VX2253mh displays, which are plugged into the motherboard with HDMI and VGA cables. After installing Windows 7 and downloading all of the updated drivers I could find for my chipset, the motherboard, and everything in Windows Update, I set about changing from a clone display to an extended desktop configuration. I got it working alright, but with one really annoying problem: on the monitor that is connected via HDMI, there is a scaling or resolution problem so that I can't see the edges of windows that are maximized. It seems to cut off around 20 pixels in every direction--so I can't see the menu bar in my browser right now, for example.

For what it's worth, when I use the Intel software to modify my display, it refers to one of my monitors as "Monitor VX2253 Series" and the other as "Digital Television VX2253 Series," and whenever I try to change the digital television to monitor, it automatically switches the other to digital television. I presume this is standard procedure for some reason, though it's confusing to me why they would automatically refer to my second monitor as a television...... Read more

I'm using the extended desktop to watch videos on my tv while I continue working on my laptop. My problem is when I switch a video to full screen mode on the tv, as soon as I click on anything back on my laptop the video exits full screen. It's only a problem watching videos online on a web browser (I've tried it on both Firefox and IE8). From what I've been able to find out the problem is that when I click something else it takes the focus away from the video. So is there any way I can stop this from happening? or some other way I can keep videos in full screen and still work on my laptop?

A:using extended desktop, videos wont stay in fullscreen

most flash based videos ( like youtube or similar) wont stay in full screen if you click outside the browser window. unfortunately, this isn't really an error, it's just the way they function.
