What to buy laptop or ultrabook?

Q: What to buy laptop or ultrabook?

Hi everyone, i am really confused what to buy from laptop or ultrabook.

I want which can run 24x7 but gives best performance. must have good battery life.

So anyone can suggest me any good model from these two.

I trust acer, lenovo and samsung so it will be good if you can suggest me any model from this 3 companies.

And sorry if i have opened the thread in wrong section.

A: What to buy laptop or ultrabook?

I think the choice between ultrabook and laptop will depend on how you're going to use the computer and what your price range is. Ultras are definitely gonna cost more. Probably more than $700 for the basic models going up to about $1,200 or more. A decent laptop can be had for about $400.

Then there's size and weight. If you're going to carry it around all day the ultras will be much lighter. But do you want to watch an occasional movie or play a game? The ultras don't have optical drives and they've got really, REALLY small screens. So take a look at this article and see how many check marks you can give to the ultras and how many check marks you can give to the laptops. The one with the most check marks wins.

What is the best bang for the buck laptop/ultrabook with 10-12 inch screen?

I have an Asus T100 which is awesome but lacks processing power and RAM.

Looking to upgrade to something with more power, HDMI out with very
portable form factor.

Any recommendations?

A:Best Value - Laptop Ultrabook 10-12in

I'd go with an ASUS Zenbook UX303LN. It's a 13 incher, but it's the only ultrabook I know with a discrete graphics card.

Otherwise look for something that runs 5th gen intel graphics.

I need to know what is the best portable but budget friendly laptop or Ultrabook? I know Ultrabooks are the best solution, but its too pricy. My budget is maximum US$ 800 (700 is best solution). Are there any good ultrabook or laptop in this price tag?

I don't want to play games in this device, I only need it for web browsing and my university education.

A:What is the best budget portable laptop/Ultrabook?

Killer Bee, You have a big choice of laptops/portables for your budget. I suggest that you visit one of the big box stores that have lots of laptops and try them out.
I personally use Toshiba's and have never had a lemon.

If all you want to do is to use web and office products. most any of the laptops should be fine. Check out the screen size and keyboards as well as making sure they have enough hard disk and memory.

I think it's been happening for a month now. My laptop screen 'glitches' - the images distorting and sometimes green text appearing - before righting itself and crashing. The only way I can get the laptop to function again is to turn it off via the power button or take the battery out and put it back it again. It has also become slow starting up - taking at least five minutes before you can log in and then a further five before you can actually do anything. The cursor sometimes gets stuck in the center of the screen - I can access things using the tab screen but the cursor won't move, whether I use the laptop touchpad or my USB mouse. The fan has also been sporadically speeding up before calming down again - even though I've been doing the same thing for the past god knows when.

I've done a boot-up scan using avast, had a look through all of my files and gotten rid of any old files that I don't need on there, in an attempt to create some space but I've got about 600-700 gb free so I can't see why that should be a problem. Nothing happens before the glitches/crashes so I don't think I'm causing it by moving it and so on.

About a month ago, the charger port was fixed at a laptop repair shop, and then the laptop itself was sent off to SAMSUNG to have the motherboard replaced because I mistakenly wiped the bios (since one driver update shut the laptop off in the middle of the bios update) so I don't know if... This sort of problem is tough to troubleshoot over the internet. It could be quite a few things that could cause the symptoms that you're experiencing. With that said, I'd probably start with updating the discrete GPU drivers. Since you did switch from integrated to discrete, this could be the main cause for the graphic glitches which is probably crashing the system.

Moving forward, I think you should download something like CPU-Z to monitor the CPU load and temperatures during the crashes. It could be that your CPU is overheating and could use some attention.

Hi All,
I am looking for a light/thin/small ultrabook that would allow me to work outside home whenever possible At this point I'm using a desktop PC but would like to migrate toward a laptop/ultrabook. I am still planning to use the displays I have while working at home (I am about to buy the ultrabook together with a docking station). The main factors I am interested in are:
-> hardware:
- SSD is a must be
- 4GB RAM is a minimum, 8GB is optimal but for sure I would like to have a possibility to extend that to 12-16gb)
- CPU - i5 at minimum - thinking about i7 (is it worth?)
- unfortunately, in most of ultrabooks there are xxxxU CPUs which are not upgradable; I was looking at xxxxM but they seem to be more power conuming - I would be grateful for your opinion about this as well;
- matt display is a must be (I would like to be able to work in the garden)
- battery - as durable and long lasting as possible
- resolution - I was looking at 1366x768 - I assume it is less power consuming than 1920 x 1080 but at this point I'm more into the 1920 x 1080 as it will make the work easier (IDE etc.) - are there anyone who disagrees?
- price - not more than 1500$
I think that's all for the introduction. Now the options I gathered so far (unfortunately I do not even have an option to compare them visually):

Toshiba Portege Z30-A-19L
Core i7 4510U / 13,3 Full HD / 8192 / 256 SSD / Intel HD 4400

Iastor.sys BSOD had been appearing now and then for the past 3 years. Now I m locked out of my laptop. I tried installing windows 10 from win7. The installation completed but this BSOD does not let me boot in to it.
Normal booting takes me to win 10 and then results in BSOD
Last known config that worked takes windows 7 and then results in BSOD.
None of the other booting options seem to work.
Ran the diagnostics but no problem was detected
Tried multiple times to boot. Dint work. Now diagnostics shows a problem with hard drive 0. Code 0142 validation 68569. But it was OK some time back and dint show any error.
I also noted that ultrabook is heating up very quickly after I tried to install windows 7
1. How do I solve this issue?
2. How do I get my files back? - I have a 1 tb USB ready to take a back up
Thanks in advance for your time.

Want to buy a new ultra-book. want screen not less than 15.6". plus dedicated graphic card and good battery life. i7 processor and min 8gb ram

A:Which is the best ultrabook by the date?

I would wait for Haswell which is going to be released in 2 weeks. Haswell will improve battery life significantly and improve graphics performance. Make sure the i7 is a quad core when purchasing (sometimes manufacturers disable 2 cores). 8GB of RAM is becoming the norm lately. As for a dedicated graphics card, you will not find any ultrabooks with a dedicated GPU (if it has one, it is most likely weak). I recently helped someone else with the same issue and came up short. The faster the GPU gets, the less battery life you receive Keep that in mind. What games will you be playing?

So I want an ultrabook because it seemed like it'd be the best for my needs:

- Easily portable and fits good enough on those clownishly small college desks.
- I think an i5 processor would be best (hopefully it'll stay cooler than an i7?)
- Fast with SSDs and capable processors
- Can use most programs (HD video streaming, music streaming, word processing, web browsing, programming, and statistical analysis software)
- Gaming is definitely not a priority. I have a desktop for that.
- Has a good resolution. (I'd prefer over the standard 1366x768 since the screen will be small)- Good battery life of course (over 7 hrs would be fantastic) The only thing is that I'm having a really hard time figuring out which one I should get. I think there are 2nd generation ultrabooks with the ivy bridge processors coming out soon but I don't know when or if I should even wait. I of course want it to be future proof, but I also want it to be under $1200 or so. Right now I have seen great reviews for the Portege Z835 and Asus Zenbook UX31. The Asus seems to be a solid choice except it looks like its trackpad sucks (which is a major problem). The Portege seems alright, but its screen isn't that great. I also definitely don't want an Apple product, they just don't work well for me and are usually too overpriced for their hardware. So I guess: 1.) Are my needs listed above reasonable expectations for an ultrabook?2.... Read more

If your budget can up to $1200, why not choose the latest Zenbook UX31A, it's the 2nd zenbook, and the price is under around 1100$.

Zenbook UX31A has improve their trackpad issue, I just find Samsung Series 9 also is a great choice, you can see the comparison, it has a similar specs with UX31A. but more thinner and little expensive.

I am looking for a new ultrabook for work. I am leaning towards the $2700 surface book with the discrete gpu and 16 gigs of ram. Anyone have a recommendation for any other laptops that fit in this category? Minimum 16 gigs ram and a descent gpu needed and would prefer 6th gen core i7.

A:ultrabook recommendation?

The surface book is pretty much it with the specs you want. No other ultrabook offers the ram and the GPU at that form factor
Also... what is your definition of ultrabook... Technically the Surfacebook isn't an ultrabook either.
You can get touchscreen Dell Inspirons with those specs but you'd have to go up to 15''

I just purchased Dell inspiron 14 running windows 8. I have hp 6310 all in one printer. The computer does not recognize the printer. I had a similar problem with an iomega removable hard drive. Dell technical support told me that this PC has USB 3.0 ports and older USB devices cannot be recognized by these ports. Is this correct? If so, is there any device available (e.g. a small cable with USB 3. plug at one end and USB 2.0 socket at the other end ) that would enable the printer and iomega usable with with this laptop ?

I shall appreciate any help in this matter.

Thank you.

A:Inspiron 14 ultrabook

What Dell told you is not true. USB 2.0 devices work on USB 3.0 ports. If you have multiple USB devices that are not recognized by this computer, then the computer is probably defective.

Processor: Dual core 2.0 GHz or better
Memory: 2 GB
Hard disk space: 15.0 GB available
Video: Nvidia GeForce FX 5900, ATI/AMD Radeon X300, Intel GMA X4500, or better
Sound: DirectX? 8.1 compliant card
DirectX?: 9.0c or better

yeah, those machines will play rift fine. and I doubt you'll need to run it at low settings unless your Internet connection is really slow.

Sorry for my bad english!
I hope this is the right forum section for my question.

I've bought a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro a while ago, which is an ultrabook. my main purpose was that I buy the y2p so I retire my old laptop and so that I upgrade to a better hardware...

I wanted something that could be both a laptop and a tablet. so I y2p was a good choise for me.

But what I didn't think of was that y2p is an ultrabook. I actually didn't really know the meaning of ultrabook!
I turn on my laptop (with its battery detached and connected directly to power cord...) when I wake up and I turn it off when I go to bed.
In older laptops everyone said if you want to use your laptop for a long period of time in home, its better if you detach the battery and just connect it directly to power (with the charger adapter cable...)
I'm asking if this is ok for an ultrabook? will the battery be harmed? is it ok if its connected to the power when its in use? which for me is 12hours a day, I plug my adapter when I wake up and I unplug it when I go to bed... is this ok?

I use it mostly for watching films and web browsing... oh and I connect it to an external monitor with hdmi. but sometimes I just use it as a laptop, when I go out or in other situations...
So should I keep the y2p and just leave it plugged in all the time or get a laptop that has a removable battery? like a macbook or a lenovo thinkpad or something?

Thanks in advance.

Hi guys  I hope you can help please. I have an HP Ultrabook Sleekbook 14-b003sa running Windows 10. And now I have two big problems.  My inbuilt keyboard recently stopped working so I tried a system restore which then froze (I was able to log on using the onscreen keyboard). It's still not working. My second problems is that now, a few times turning off and on, means I now can't access my password protected account which contains all my Word files but 25 days' worth of iTunes which I ripped really recently and took forever! When I try to log in I get the message 'Preparing Windows' and then 'We can't sign in to your account' and  instead a temporary account is opened for me. With regards to the keyboard issue I've done the removing the battery trick with no luck.  I've also tried to update the drivers and am informed I have the latest versions. I've also deleted them and rebooted. No luck. The driver has the yellow triangle with the exclamation point next to it so something must be wrong. When I try to system restore I'm told that I first need to uninstall a previous restore which I aborted today. But when I do that it just stops responding. I've also tried doing all of this in safe mode. i really don't want to do a factory reset as I'll lose everything. Can anyone please help? Fingers crossed and thanks. Peter

My Inspiron 14Z has a hybrid drive with a 32GB SSD and a 500GB HD.  The OS is supposed to be on the SSD portion as drive C:
When I made the mistake of updating the 14Z to Windows 10, I waited too long to go back to Windows 7, and had to use the recovery disk to set it back to factory settings.  This didn't go well as the OS was put on the 500GB HD instead of the SSD.  The HD then became the C: drive.
The SSD is clearly visible in the Bios, but it is not visible in either Computer Management or Windows Explorer.  How can I make the SSD visible, and get the OS back on it?

A:Inspiron 14Z Ultrabook Does Not See SSD Drive

A hybrid drive is not a combination of a hard drive and a separate SSD -- the SSD is built into the drive and not separately accessible.  It's used by the drive's logic board as a cache.
The other possibility is that you have a 32G mSATA drive that's separate from the main hard drive and also used as a cache.
There is no way the operating system was (or is) installed to a 32G SSD  though - the OS is on the hard drive, cached by the SSD either way.  32 G is just too small for use as a bootable OS drive.
128G is a bare minimum - 256 a more practical one - if you want to run the OS from an SSD.

Hi Redsand. You must live in an area with high iron content? Iron county, Wisconsin where the sand is more red than red! The whole area around Lake Superior due to the fact it was a volcano crater once upon a time.

I'm looking for something mobile. The ultrabook may be the way to go. I've been eying the hybrids like the Surface, but not so sure on them recently. I'd rather shell out a little more to get a lot more.

I think you to be correct in saying that the ultrabook might just replace everything, save the smart phone. I see some are upgradeable as well.

Wikipedia has an interesting article including a good list of what's available and what is to come.

For me it will have to have a touch screen. That's a must. I'm not partial to the trackpad or the mouse. More of a keyboard shortcut user and liking the touch navigation. Touch is a marvelous UI.

I think jimbo is a member to read on, for he's a Pro that does a lot of traveling. He makes a lot of sense to me in that area.

Good topic BTW, for we have entered a new era of computing. Smart phones, padds, and now MS catching up with 8. It'll be challenging to buy what I need and want.

Do not, DO NOT, DON'T say yes to dynamic partitions.

Avoid them at all costs.
HPs come with a bunch of partitions from the factory.

You will probably need to use a "logical' partition.

My year old XPS 13 Ultrabook's battery is not charging when plugged in. I measured the voltage of the power adaptor at the plug (the end that connects to the Ultrabook) and the voltage level seem fine at 19.4V

However when I plug and unplug the power when the Ultrabook is off, the LED turns on and off accordingly.

My Ultrabook is L321x, running Windows 7, and has BIOS A7 installed.

Does anyone have the same issue, and is there anything I can do to check what wrong?

Thanks for any help

A:XPS 13 Ultrabook battery not charging

Hi kc.yyz,
I would suggest you to drain the residual power from the laptop:

Disconnect any external peripherals (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) from the computer
Then remove the adapter and the battery
Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds
Reconnect the battery and the adapter

Check the status of AC adapter in BIOS, follow the steps below:

Restart or turn on your computer
As soon as the Dell™ logo appears, tap <F2> until the message Entering Setup appears
‘AC Adapter’ will be listed under the Main tab, and it should be 45 Watt

If the AC Adapter is determined in BIOS, you can update the system BIOS to A08. You may download and install the latest BIOS from the link below:
Also, you can check the battery health from the ‘Dell Battery Meter’. The Battery Meter is used to check the status, life and health of the battery. To launch the Battery Meter:

Click ‘Start’
Click ‘Control Panel’
Click ‘Power Options’ under ‘Hardware and Sound’
Click ‘Dell Battery Meter’

The battery status on this system can also be found using the LEDs, which are located on the right of the system. Press the button located near the LEDs to check the battery charge. Each glowing LED represents 20% of battery charge.

Hope this helps. Please reply if you have any other questions.

I have tried with a Kingston SSD and a regular HDD, and they work. I have tried the Samsung SSD on a different computer, and the SSD is not defect.
Anyone have a solution? Would really appreciate some help.

Edit: The SSD shows up in the BIOS.

Hi,  after waking up from the sleep mode my HP ultrabook Spectre XT screen stayed black, so I connected it to an external display and googled for possible solution. I found a video here and performed a hard reset as suggested. Well, after a hard reset it got only worse: the black screen is still here but now computer doesnt work with external display. After turning on there are only lights at the keyboard, no reaction to F8 etc.
Any ideas what else to try? Thanks.

I have a brand new HP Spectre Ultrabook that I love.  It is model 13t-v000.  This particular unit has the i7-6500U processor with the 512GB SSD and Windows 10 Pro.  I have some small problems that I am not ready to make a warranty claim and I have seen few discussions amoung other Spectre owners, so I thought I would start the conversation. Problem 1: Scratching/Squeeling noises from speakers when computer is "working".  These noises are subtle, but if it's quiet, you can hear them clearly.  They almost sound like a HDD that is writing data, but the noises are clearly coming from the speakers.  They coincide with processor activity, whether it is movements on the screen or other CPU activity.  When the CPU is completely inactive, the noises are silent.  I have tried changes to the B&O drivers and software including disabling, I have tried changing the frequency and bit-rate of speaker format, but none of these things stop the noises.  It seems as if X360 owners have had similar problems, but I could not a proposed solutions that worked for this Spectre. Problem 2: Windows 10 CPU activity on lock screen.  When the PC is locked, a process starts called lockapphost.exe.  This process uses a tremendous amount of system resources, and is such a problem, the fans on the Spectre gear up and don't stop until you unlock the machine.  A Google search for this process produced examples of other Windows 10 users ex... I recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 on my Samsung Ultrabook NP730U3E. After the upgrade, I'm having issues with the driver for my AMD Radeon HD 8500M graphic card. The PC is set up with a dual graphic card system with both the AMD card and an Intel HD Graphics 4000. The first time I upgraded I had problems with a black screen where I could only see the mouse cursor. This was resolved by enetering safety mode and deactivating the 8500M card. I then went back to win 8.0 and upgraded once more to 8.1, and the issue was gone. However, this is probably because now the AMD graphic card has been stopped by the system. AMD Catalyst Control Centre can't be opened either. I've figured as much as that there is some compatibility issues between the AMD Radeon 8500M and win 8.1, but does anyone know how to resolve this issue?

A:AMD Radeon HD 8500M on Samsung Ultrabook, Win 8.1

Welcome to Eight Forums.
Have you tried updating your drivers?

There was a post on an issue similar to yours in this forum.

I do not have the same notebook, have a HP notebook with Windows 8.1. My issues were resolved by downloading the mobility drivers direct from AMD along with updated Intel drivers.

If you cannot obtain Windows 8.1 drivers for your graphics from Samsung, then you could try using the mobility drivers from AMD to try to resolve the switchable graphics issue. Be sure to update Windows first as they did release a WDDM Driver update a little while back that could help out with your problem.

Hope this helps in some way and keep us posted on your progress

BTW - are you on 8.1 or still using preview?

Hi Everyone,
I tried searching, but forgive me if I missed something.
I am having power problems with my new inspiron 14z ultrabook. When it goes into hibernate I cannot wake it - the power button is lit but the screen is black and the computer is unresponsive to any buttons I try. I can only force reboot by holding the power button. I called Dell and the nice tech altered some of my power settings. It still happened - I closed the lid and laptop hibernated and would not come back. I have now had to change the settings so that it only goes to sleep, but this is not going to be good on the battery.
How do I wake it from hibernate?
Thank you!

A:New Inspiron Ultrabook Won't Wake Up from Hibernate

Hi jenNOfur,
I would recommend you to flash BIOS if it needs an update. Hibernation issues can occur due to corrupt video card drivers. So, we need to re-install the card drivers as well.
1) Please follow these steps to flash BIOS:
Click the following link to install the BIOS update:
Note: Before flashing the BIOS please check the following:
- Battery should have 10% charge
- Adapter should be connected
- No external devices should be connected.
- All other programs should be closed and documents saved
If the existing BIOS version is the most current one, BIOS update give that prompt during the installation.
2) If BIOS update does not fix the issue, we will have to re-install the video adapter drivers.
Since multiple video adapters are shipped with the computer, I need to check the exact computer specification before I provide you with the recommended video drivers.
I am adding you as a friend. I am also sending a private message. Please write back with your computer’s Service Tag and the name of account holder. Once I get these details, I will send the appropriate drivers and steps for re-installation.
Please perform these troubleshooting steps and do write back with the findings and system information. I would be glad to assist.

First of all hello to everyone here, I've been browsing these forums for an answer to my issue but couldn't find anything in the FAQ about my specific problem. I followed the directions in the FAQ as well as those on the Intel site but I am still having issues. I ran the Intel system compatibility and driver checker, and it says that I have the proper Graphics Diver for my Intel3000 (, the proper WiFi driver for my Centrino Ultimate N 6300 (, and the new WiDi driver (3.5.40). I have a Samsung Series 9 (original model) and a Belkin Screencast. When I open the WiDi software and turn on my Screencast, it shows up immediately in the connection menu on my laptop. When I connect, it goes through the security setup, then takes me back to the main WiDi screen. After this, I try to connect again, and it gives me a message: something to the effect of "while connecting to your device, your internet connection will be lost. It will be restored after the connection is made". I never had this step involved in the process with windows 7. When I click continue, it shows that it is connecting on the laptop, and the TV (connected by HDMI to the screencast) confirms that the two are connected, but the WiDi application still shows "connecting", and never fully connects. I have tried powering both off and restarting the process, I have tried to have the laptop forget the screencast and start from scratch, and nothing is working. I look forward... Read more

HelloI recent acquired a Thinkpad Helix 2-in-1 (2nd gen with Core M processor) with an Ultrabook Pro Keyboard. It was working fine. But tablet battery was losing charge constantly. So  I was asked to update the battery firmware. I got battery firmware (not the ultrabook pro keyboard firmware). I did that. After that my synaptics touch pad stopped working. then I was told by Lenovo support that my Ultrabook pro keyboard firmware and BIOS are older versions. I should update them to make sure everything worked well together. So i updated the BIOS and keyboard firmware. currently my firmware versions are:1. BIOS/UEFI -- 1.862. Embedded controller firmware (on tablet) -- 1.643. Ultrabook keyboard firmware -- 1.09 RIght now I Have tried all kinds of things such as resetting the keyboard and the tablet with a paper clip and reattaching them to see if things would work. It didnt help. i have tried other things such as updating the driver under device manager. That hasnt helped. I tried to download a lot of the update packages on LEnovo support site (for 20CG/20CH) and installed them. that didnt seem to help either. At the moment my keyboard is unusable. Alright, I bought a new Dell XPS 14 Ultrabook from Best Buy online back in very late August for college use. I wanted something with new tech so that in four years it would still be decent, so I picked this laptop. Well unfortunately about 2 weeks ago it started having issues, major issues.

It started one day by crashing, displaying a BSoD and restarting. I thought nothing of it as I've had it happen a few times before on other laptops, but about an hour later it happened again, and again...and again.

Its probablly happened like 60 or 70 times now in the last 2 weeks, sometimes when I use my laptop a lot it will do it 10+ times in a day. Luckily it didn't start until finals week where I didn't need my laptop, but now that I'm home I want this solved, I can't have this happening when I go back to school.

The BSoD refers to iastor.sys as the error, and I can get the other codes in a minute, but I'm trying to type this quickly in fear of the computer crashing again.

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you!

EDIT : I've contacted Dell twice now, the first time the tech was very unhelpful and lied about calling me back the next day to check if his "fix" worked (it didn't, I got another BSoD 5 minutes after the call ended).

The second time the guy was helpful, he deleted the driver and uninstalled an Intel program, but unfortunately when he told me to restart the computer it wouldn't boot (thanks Dell!). I have a box ... Read more

I am hoping to purchase one of these but I need to clear up a couple of things before I take the plunge...
I'm hoping to find a proud XPS owner who likes to write computer code and needs to use Ctrl+Break to interrupt running code during code development.
Of course there is no Break key on the XPS but I have a sneaky feeling that Ctrl+Fn+F12 might do the trick. Can anyone confirm this please?
Secondly, how would you turn off the WiFi on the XPS? Perhaps there is a hardware switch and/or some key combination?
Many Thanks

DO NOT PURCHASE AN ACER TRAVELMATE P645 ULTRABOOK!!!! My company purchased 15 of these last year because they seemed like good machines.  Sturdy, Lightweight, Great Specs. The only problem we've run into is that every single one of them developed the same problem at somewhere between 6 months and 1 year.  They begin to switch off, without warning, but only when on battery power.  Plugged in, they work just fine. So we ship them back to Acer one-by-one, at our cost for shipping (Acer doesn't have the common courtesy to pay for shipping of a defective laptop) and hope for the best.  50% of the laptops sent in for repair come back with the correct diagnosis - Replaced Motherboard, and they work like a charm.  The other 50% come back with varying diagnosis (updated bios, nothing wrong) and then we have to ship them back again, at our cost (Did I mention that acer doesn't have the common courtesy to pay for shipping on a defective laptop) and we hope for the best. At this point we've put enough into shipping these laptops to TX for repair that we could have purchased a new laptop from Acer, but I wouldn't because it would have to be repaired in 6-12 months. BUYER BEWARE - this laptop is defective and should have been recalled. We started purchasing our new company laptops through another organization as a result and we are very happy.

Ever since I owned this laptop, it was quite fast, but suddenly after 3 years of using, it escalated to freezing often. I have had Malwarebyte and Bitdefender Total Security 2016 installed(of which both are premium accounts). I downloaded both applications from a third party website. Currently running a disk check via command prompt (chkdsk /r) and will see how it goes. I will update if the need arises.

I have an envy m6 touchscreen that is giving me problems that i can't solve. It has been great up until recently. i was using my laptop last nite when suddenly it turned off but i didn't think that the battery shoukd have been dead yet. its acting as if the bat is empty and plugging it in just turn on the orange led by the power plug. when i press the power button it flashes for a second but the screen does nothing and it doesn't actually turn on.I'm using my phone to attempt to find a solution atm which is very frustrating. adding to the stress is the fact that i have school work projects and a midterm project on it that I need to finish.Almost forgot to mention it started doing a few other odd things over the last week such as the touchscreen going nuts registering phantom touches endlessly until i close/hibernate/shutdown it.

I want to buy an ultrabook, but it has a 512gb SSD with raid0. I would like to remove this and replace it with a 750gb or 1tb 2-1/2 HDD.

If I make an image of the SSD and put it on the HDD (or clone the SSD to the HDD) will the raid configuration -- which I won't need on the HDD -- cause me some problems?

If so, can some suggest the best course of action to achieve what I want?

A:Can i replace SSD (raid0) with regular HDD in ultrabook?

Hi DocTerry,

Be very careful here. Since you didn't give the specific model number of the laptop in question, there is little to go on; however, I hope you understaand that attempting such a drastic change would instantly void all warranty support. And, I'm thinking the complications of attempting such a thing, without a vast knowledge of the processes involved, you are only headed for big trouble here. Moreover, you are going to take a huge performance hit here by making such a modification so why not leave everything "as-is" and buy yourself a nice external USB drive for that extra storage.

but it has a 512gb SSD

Are you sure it doesn't have a 2x256MB SSD arrangement?

I'd just leave it alone until "after" the warranty period expires. Good luck.

There's probably a sticky for this somewhere or something, but I can't find it, so here goes.

Just got a new laptop which came with windows 8, It's an Asus Zenbook UX302LG. I tried Windows 8 a bit during the developer preview, but I'm really not that familiar with things, anywho. So this has a touch screen, and I've been using it a fair bit, but I'm curious about 8.1. Being the "newer" version", from what I've seen it has some improvements over regular 8 in some areas, like the apps screen looks a little tidier. What I'm wondering though is does it also remove some of the touch features I would be using with a touch screen? Or just make them more mouse friendly. Long story short, given I have a touch screen which I am using, should I upgrade to Windows 8.1? Or will I have a better experience with regular 8?

A:Windows 8 or 8.1 on Touch Screen Ultrabook

You should upgrade IMO. You certainly will not lose any touch capabilities.

Features shown in Compare Windows 8.1 Editions where it says (new) are not available on 8.

Hey folks

Warning what you are about to read may make you cry or laugh your socks off.

I have an Acer S3 Ultrabook that I have had for over a year now. i backed it up as soon as I got it using the Acer Backup Manager to an external usb drive its a 1tb drive that I keep multiple computer backups on. Now I usually use Acronis to back up my systems because it is simple to use.

Anyway, Thursday of last week I found i was unable to boot windows and the startup repair wasnt working either, which was followed by a blue screen. no problem I thought. I plugged in the external drive to the usb port, then attatched the usb dvdrw, inserted the acronis recovery disc then went through the process of recovering my hd. once the pc rebooted I realized my mistake. I had used the wrong image to recover my disc. I also remembered too late that I had indeed used Acer back up manager and NOT acronis to back up the acer hd originally.

I now had a glitchy windows 7 OS working but no Acer Back up manager to recover the files. Also the OS I had on my Acer now, wasnt working and kept crashing. by now it was 2am and I was very tired but I wanted to get this sorted. So in desperation I took a windows 7 home premium disc and decided to install a fresh copy of windows.

Things went from bad to worse, I somehow managed to format the wrong drive wiping the ssd that I believe holds the start up files, again once i realized it was too late. so I went ahead and installed the fresh copy of windows on my C... Read more

A:I Accidentally Removed Bluetooth Entirely on my Ultrabook!!!

What does "I removed Bluetooth" mean exactly? I hope you did not physically rip it out of Ultrabook innards.

If you accidentally uninstalled your Bluetooth driver in Device Manager, then you can ask Device Manager to "Scan for hardware changes" and see if it reinstalls Bluetooth driver automatically.

If it cannot find drivers for the device, then you should go to manufacturer's support Web site for your Ultrabook and download the Bluetooth driver from there.

Thanks in advance.

yesterday, i had a helix 2gen + ultrabook pro keyboard. first time, everything is ok. but when i upgrade windows 8.1 to windows 10, some problem came to me. first problem is battery not charging issue. after installed win10, ac plugged in helix, only charging helix. if plugged in pro keyboard, only charging keyboard. be originally plugged in any where, first charging helix, twice charging keyboard. but this logic didn't work in my helix... problem 2 is battery drain. if connect pro keyboard and helix in to sleep mode, pro keyboard wake alone (i think this because in sleep mode, keyboard backlight is active). this problem bring about sleep mode battery drain. i tried re-install window 10, 8.1, format drive and clean install os, install all new drivers and utilitys, but  anything help me... anybody know a solution for this issue?  my head go to brust soon please help me and sorrty to my english

I have been ogling the market for somebody to finally offer a decent ultra-book for business, but nobody seems to be up to the task.

I know for fact that the kind of spec I'm looking for is very doable, because Apple has it already, but I need a Windows ultra-book. I already tried to put Windows 7/8 on my latest Macbook Air, and it was awkward at best, issues with the pad drivers, just not usable.

My ideal ultra-book would have the following configuration:

Screen: 13"-15", with 1080P
SSD: Samsung 840, 256-512GB
Memory: 16GB

I'd be happy to pay up to 3k for such ultra-book, but I can't find anything that comes close in the spec.

Is there anybody who at least got something like this in the works? Any rumors? Anything?

A:Proper business ultrabook wanted

Try the Lenovo X1?

Also the MBA only goes up to 8GB RAM, I don't think there's any ultrabooks on the market with 16GB.

I have recently purchased a new HP Ultrabook Folio1040. After few days of use I noticed I could hear a clicking noise comming from my laptop, this noise you can only hear if the room is silent. any idea ?

I have replaced a new Sandisk 256 gb SSD hard drive with 128 ssd. is it normal to hear this sound ? speakers are on mute.

but sound only comes when I move my laptop ...when it is on flat surface the sound sometimes stops sometimes keep coming slowly. Thanks in advance.

A:HP Ultrabook Folio1040 Clicking Sound

Does the "click" sound only happen when you are moving the mouse or scrolling the wheel or anything (Basically, doing anything on the computer?)

If so the processor could just have a small click sound coming as it's processing, I've noticed this with a few system but most don't do it.

You say it has an SSD and not a HDD, so it shouldn't be the hard drive making the noise as there's no physical parts moving, it operates similarly to RAM. Otherwise I would see if it sounds like it's coming from where the Fan is.

Hi everyone and thanks for reading.
I'm looking for thin/light (hence ultrabook, but it doesn't necessarily have to be an "ultrabook") laptop between 14 - 15.6 inches. There are only a few requirements.

First is that it has an SSD, because I want it to have quick resume from standby and/or hibernate. I've heard impressive comments on Samsung's quickresume or whatever it's called. SSD/HDD combos would be considered but not preferable.

A good screen with high resolution and nice colors. Something more than the standard 1366x768 LCD.

An efficient running system and ultimately good runtimes. No discreet GPU is preferred for price and runtime reasons. Integrated graphics are fine for me. Probably the best choice for this would be an ivy bridge dual core with HD4000.

Also, I'd like the least possible crapware, so I think I will not like an HP.
Price will be secondary but I think the cheapest 15 inch Samsung 9 series fulfills all these requirements fairly well, but is quite expensive, so that will be my maximum budget. Cheaper is better of course

Thanks for your help.

A:Ultrabook with a nice screen, SSD, and runtime

The Series 9 is a great choice for the price, it has a much better screen (1600x900 PLS matte) than those crappy 1366x768 ones on a lot of other ultrabooks.

Lenovo's new Thinkpad X1 Carbon is also an awesome machine but might be a bit more expensive.

Hello, I have had my laptop for over 2 years now. I have really been taking a great care of it and I have been more than satisfied with it until this week. One of the hinges suddenly cracked open. I did not drop it nor did I cause the damage. It really worries me that the hinge practically broke by itself and it seems as it is a common problem. I cannot close my laptop and I am afraid that my screen will get damaged if I don't get it fixed asap. And I really need my laptop for college and for work. I would love to hear from HP team on how to solve this problem quickly. So far I  have always recommended HP to my friends and I hope I will not have to change my opinion about it. Thank you for your consideration,Joanna

If your touch screen is not responding to your touch, try this:try looking at Device Manager,  if there's a yellow-flagged item and/or no driver for touch screen under HID (human interface device)  then you have to add it. click on the yellow flag item, tell it to update driver from list from your computer,   go to Generic drivers, not the Acer ones, choose the one that's called HID touch screen,  update it,  restart, and there you go.check another post here on this forum,  from scotsman.  he gives the steps maybe a little better than I do..Acer tech supoort were useless, as usual,  and told me I had to do a Restore.  They are worse than useless, actually, since they waste tons of your time and then all they can tell you is to do a complete restore. When will Acer ever get decent tech support people? When you look at Amazon reviews, for example, under my particular laptop,  you find over a hundred reviews,  large percent being rather negative,  but you'll notice that it's mostly over bad experiences with Acer tech support.   and this is for a thousand dollar machine !!I personally believe that Acer makes good hardware but what's holding them back is their tech support:  it's horrible !!!

I have a new laptop, an HP Envy 4 Ultrabook. It has a 30GB SSD and a 500GB HDD. Within 2 weeks of receiving the laptop, the hard drive failed. I sent it back to HP, they replaced the HDD, and sent it back to be a week and a half later.

The laptop seems to be working fine, except for one error. When I close the laptop and put it to sleep, sometimes opening it does NOT make it resume from sleep. Sometimes it hangs on a back screen and I have to hold the power button. Sometimes it reboots. Sometimes it reboots and gives me a crash dump. And SOMETIMES it wakes up fine. It seems to wake up correctly if it has been asleep for not very long. I disabled hibernate in case that was the problem, but it has not helped. I have searched this issue but I can find no solution for myself. I have updated the BIOS and all the drivers that I can find. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I have hp ultrabook 1043 cl, Yesterday i created partition after defragmenting the C: drive. Next i tried to do simple volume on new partition but was throwing error was not able to create.

In the process the label on C: became empty, i assigned and made the c: as active and was prompted with warning "If you make this a Dynamic Disk, you wont be able to boot installed OS'es from this disk" and clicked YES thinking i already made c as active.

restarted the machine and the boot manager didnot list windows and displayed error Windows Boot Manager oxc000000f on laptop and displayed message to repair using windows disc

next created win 7 USB bootable in order to install windows, but during the installation process i get messages "Where do you want to install windows?" and no drives are listed.

How do i get the C: back ?

Sounds like you converted it to Dynamic, not a good thing. You need to convert it back to Basic but that wipes the drive.

Me as many of students just bought a ultra book for school start. I got a Lenovo yoga 900 isk2, lovely computer, at least on paper. It has a bigger battery than any other ultra book that i know of but it's battery life is simply not that good. Why? Well the GPU (intel Iris 540) has to push out a whopping 3200*1800 pixels for this tiny screen. My solution to this problem was simply to halve the resolution, 1600*900, still better DPI than my stationary. With windows 10 scaling there should hardly be any difference on running  3600*1800 200% scaling or 1600*900 at 100%. But there is. At 1600*900 the screen looks blurry, text is almost unreadable and edges between colors looks brown. That seems strange since each pixel sent out from the GPU should just take up 2*2 pixels on the screen. So why is it like this, I'm not totally sure but my best guess is that the screen uses some kind of blurring to fill the whole screen, probably bicubic interpolation. Underneath you'll se an example of how it looks and how it should look.3200*1800 100% scaling1600*900 100% scaling (How it looks today)1600*900 100% scaling (How it should look)  So this is my question: How do I turn of interpolation at the resolution 1600*900, is it possible? I understand that the problem may lie with the onboard graphics so I'll post my question on Intels page as well.

I noticed that the max memory for the XPS 13 (L321X) is 4GB, and that the memory is soldered onto the motherboard. Is this true? Why do this? I was looking forward to upgrading to 8 GB or 16 GB.

A:Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook L321X (Memory not upgradeable?)

Very few ultrabooks have upgradeable RAM - this one does not.
The slim form factor demands low-profile parts - that means the RAM and CPU are both hard soldered to the mainboard.  The other major advantages for the system vendors are cheaper production costs and built-in obsolescence (thanks, Apple, for originating that!).

Hey all,

Just thought I would toss it out there. I have finally got all device drivers loaded for the Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook. I wanted to thank the crew here for the help on the driver package for the display driver (Intel 3000 Driver).

Just some crazy stuff like the auto dimmer on the screen was always lowering the screen display to its lowest level. To fix this I disabled it in the advanced settings in the power management area of the control panel.

I just wanted to get peoples thoughts though. The mouse driver while loaded including tray icon is only partially working. The multi gestures don't work at all, the side scroll doesn't work and it makes the unit much less functional.

Am I stuck waiting for a new driver or is there anything that might be able to be tweaked to get it working better? It is Cypress Trackpad (ACPI\VEN_DLL&DEV_052E) running driver

I have a Samsung Ultrabook Series 5 NP540U3C, a client of mine mistakenly installed windows 10 technical preview directly on the primary hard drive.
Upon further reading, realized that it is not possible to downgrade back to windows 8 once tech preview is installed... some files go missing.
It basically crashed the hdd.

I was able to recover the hdd and it seems to be doing well... Although at the time, I installed a new 500 gb hdd.
As I was doing my installation process, I found that a lot of bios setting have been deactivated as well as it not letting me boot from sata.
A bit more info about this specific series of ultrabooks... they include an issd card hardwired right unto the motherboard. And cause booting issues if not installed with the proper drivers.

Basically the computer crashed, and the boot is looping to the issd.

I have tried everything that I can think of, I did manage to install windows 7 unto the issd (24gb) and failed to mirror the image unto the sata drive due to 1/0 issues that the computer keeps telling me.
The sata does work... I`ve installed ubunti without a problem.
Windows 7 sees it as, 128 gb unallocated.
I know it is the issd causing boot problems, but I am exhausted at this point. I have dedicated about 40 hours between work and investigating.

It would be of tremendous help if anyone can help me with this issue.
This is basically my last step before just forgetting about it... But there is always something that does the tric... Read more

My ultrabook won't charge, feels like out of the blue, I did have to wiggle the connector in a bit in the last few months but a handful of times while using sitting on a sofa so didn't think anything wrong.

It has been very wet here in Dublin and I do travel by bike but that's nothing new, I haven't been caught in a downpour, the laptop is always in its "case logic" case and my bag carrier has a special laptop section and waterproof overcover which I use if vague threat of rain.

As its an ultrabook, I now realise I cannot remove the battery without a screwdriver.

I'm a mature medical student, my uni doesn't cover laptop support.

i've probably an hour left on the battery. I will put in a warm place overnight and I am kind of up the creek if no resolution

Any help greatly appreciated

Got my laptop a month ago and was working well until yesterday. I had just closed it the other night after charging it. Then there was nothing - no boot, no LED with charger, no fan. I checked and the charger is definitely functioning, so I worry that this is a problem with the motherboard.

Since it's an ultrabook, I haven't been able to remove flea power since the battery is embedded into the laptop. If I could get some advice on removing it, or any other possible solutions, that would be great!

Otherwise, I wonder if it would be possible for a technician to come have a look at it ASAP? I'm a student at uni and have no way to get to the repair centre :(

A:Inspiron 15z 5523 Ultrabook not turning on - no response

Hi Kathartic,
I suggest you try running diagnostics by press and holding the Fn button and power on the laptop and select diagnostics from the list. If the diagnostics displays an error, please reply with the right error message.
If unable to run the diagnostics check for beep sound or flashing lock lights when the system is turned on. Also check the status and color of power button light, and include them in the reply.
Also check the status of AC adapter LED, if LED on the AC adapter is not lit (when unplugged from notebook), reseat brick and cable. Still if the LED on the AC adapter is off, replace AC Adapter & Power Cord only, else follow next step.
If LED on the AC Adapter goes off only after connecting it to the notebook, the problem could be with the motherboard of the laptop.
Please reply with results for further help.

What a crappy day -.-

I've had this HP ultrabook for just over a year now. When I first bought it I disabled intel rapid storage technology and did a fresh install of windows. After installing a clean copy I installed the intel rapid storage again and enabled acceleration.

All has been running great until today.

I think it might've had something to do with last night. I was using the laptop last night and the battery level got pretty low (like 10%), so I closed the lid and let it go to sleep.

Woke up in the morning and opened the lid and it had turned off during the night like I suspected. This has happened before. I had left my charger at work.

So I boot it up and start using it at work again, its working fine. I'm in the middle of doing coding in eclipse when I get a BSOD. Scared me, I haven't had one in a LONG time.

At first I figured it was eclipse. I rebooted, updated eclipse to the most recent version, rebooted again, then continued coding in the updated version of eclipse.

About 5 minutes in, I get the BSOD again. Now I'm pretty pissed.

I read the BSOD message and it says something about iastora.sys and DIFF_NOT_EQUAL or some crap like that.

I google it and see that it is a common problem. One forum suggested updating rapid storage/drivers. So I did, and I rebooted....and got the same BSOD again.

So do some more googling, and another forum says to just disable RST completely. He said first step was to disable RAID in the bios. I go into ... Read more

Recently I had just gotten my Samsung ultrabook Chronos Series 7. I notice that I cannot remove my battery while charging like I did for most other laptops. It is somewhat like IPod and IPhone which the battery is in-built. I am very concerned about the battery life.(For my laptop, the battery usually lasts for 3 hours for high usage and 4~5hours for normal usage)

I usually have two ways when it comes to using the battery. I will like to seek your opinion on which one of them is better, or better yet, suggest another better solution for extending battery life(for long term usage, say 3 years maybe)

1. Activate Samsung Battery Life Extender, so that the battery will only be charged till 80%.(I heard that 20% should be left empty for lithium battery) And continue using my laptop as per normal while charging without removing the battery.(I cant remove it anyway)

2. I charge my battery till 90%, unplug the AC cable, and use the laptop without charging. I heard that it will reduce the amount of charging and discharging cycle on my battery, thus helping to extend battery life.(Correct me if I am wrong.)

Any input is welcomed and thanks in advance.

A:How to extend battery life for Samsung Ultrabook?

I'd want to save Samsung Recovery and a WIn7 backup image of the HD to wipe the HD and get a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 for comparison, because I've not seen any OEM battery crapware that is better than Win7's built-in power options. The same can be said about all of the useless utilities the factory OEM's lard in along with the other bloatware that corrupts and throttles Win7. Most tech enthusiasts will not run these installs at all.

If you want to do literally a side by side comparison, then after saving your Recovery and backup, shrink C to do the Clean Reinstall to a new partition and try both as an experiment. Then you'll know for sure which runs better and can easily if you don't want it delete the Clean and Extend C again in Disk Mgmt, or we can help you delete the Samsung install and factory partitions and reclaim its space for the Clean Install.

My doubts about this are:

1. How can I backup recovery partitions in this partition mess?
2. 24gb SSD is enough for a Windows 8.1 install?
3. If I install Windows 8.1 into HD, how can I use SSD for cache? This will really help performance?

Hi All
I have a Inspiron Ultrabook 14z which was giving me a battery backup of 5+Hrs about 2 weeks back. I did not use the laptop for 2 weeks and today the laptop is not turning on. When I plugged in the adapter and tried there is a black screen with an error "The battery has permanently failed..." The system is just out of warranty but it is hardly used for 100 hrs.
Dell service center said they would need about INR 1.5k to look into the matter. INR 7k to replace the battery and if things did not work, then another INR 14k to replace the motherboard and see if it helps.
Anyone has a smarter idea? Please help me out.

A:Dell Inspiron Ultrabook 14z Battery Error

Good day, Thanks for writing to us.
The battery removal in the machine is a little complicated.
When you get the message The battery has permanently failed, does it gives you an option to press f1 or f2 ?? If yes press f1 to continue boot up.
Do you have another adapter to try?
When the machine stays blank , are you able to toggle caps or num lock (do they respond?).
Also you can try power up the machine with 1 memory at a time (if there are two), to rule out memory issues.
If you wish to try remove the battery , you can watch this video for instructions ..

Please bear in mind , any damages during the battery removal process Dell will not be responsible. Its at your discretion to remove the battery and power on the machine without it.

I have a Toshiba ultrabook. that someone brought to me. Every time on start up it says "Windows detected a Hard Disk problem".

Steps I took so far.

1.Tried to boot to UBCD to run HHD diagnostic on it. could not boot to the USB ODD. I tried turning off secure boot and enabled legacy support. would not boot at all. In BIOS also would not let me change to Legacy boot only UEFI. so at the point I said screw it I was going to take it out put it in a test machine and do it that way. After taking the back cover off I then realized "Duh!". It's an ultrabook it has one of the small SSD sticks that just sit on the MoBo.
2. So I then ran Toshibas HD diagnostic. witch said it was fine. Thought not sure how great these are I downloaded "SSDLife UB" witch from what I read is a good SSD diagnostic tool. that to said it was fine no issues.
3.Opened CMD ran "chkdsk /f" and sfc /scannow" to do repairs. found errors but was unable to repair.
4.I then tried to do a system repair on startup. That also said it could not repair the issue try another options. I tried several options, all of witch said the same thing.

So now I not sure what I can do. Is the only thing to do now is just reinstall the OS or is there something that I haven't tried that may work. If anyone knows of something that be great.

Hello all! Thank you for your help in advance! My computer recently started displaying a Blue Screen of Death upon starting up Windows 8. It takes a really long time to start up, and then it goes to the BSOD and displays a message: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE

I tried the Windows 8 system wipe and restore, using the long method to format the drives, but the problem still occurs. Attached is the memory dump. Any help will be greately appreciated.

Thank you,
