Is the HP-HPE h9-1210t Phoenix series Desktop Overkill for Me

Q: Is the HP-HPE h9-1210t Phoenix series Desktop Overkill for Me

Gentlemen/Ladies: I am strongly considering the purchase of above HP Desktop. I will use the system for surfing the web and video and photo editing. I am a novice in the area of video and photo editing. I am taking up the craft as a hobby and see where it takes me. The primary components of the system will be as follows:

- Windows 7 Home Premium (Upgrading to Windows 8 when available)
- Processor:3rd Generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770K quad-core processor [3.5GHz, 8MB Shared Cache]
- Memory: 16GB DDR3
- HD: 256GB SSD + 1 TB 7200 HD
- GPU: 2GB Nvidia GeForce GTX680 [DVI, HDMI and VGA via adapter]
- Power Supply: 600 Watt
- Liquid Cooling Solution
- Monitor: Looking at Dell 27"2560x1440

The system comes equipped with Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere 10

HP's Phoenix series is a favorite of some gamers. I was considering an Imac but decided against it because I wanted to stay with a PC. My question to the forum is are these components a little overkill? The price is not a barrier for me.

A: Is the HP-HPE h9-1210t Phoenix series Desktop Overkill for Me

I guess it will depend on how much video editing you end up doing. It is absolutely overkill for surfing the web, and overkill if you only do a little photo editing. The extra cores will help with the video editing, but you will never use them surfing the web. Even if you do gaming it will not help much. Games rarely use 4 cores of a processer. If you want a system like that, you would be better off building it yourself. It really isn't as hard as most people think and you will get better quality components, and exactly what you want. And you always have the experts here in chosing components and assembling the computer.

I'm new to the forum and have just received my new Envy PHOENIX 860-180st customized with the following: Windows 10 Pro 64-bitIntel core i7-6700 4.0 GHz16 GB RAM512GB SSDGeForce GTX 960 2GBNo secondary drives (I store all data on a NAS)  From several webpages featuring the front panel LED lighting, I understood that the 860 series provided a method to customize these lights.  I also believe I read that the 850 series could only turn on/off.  However, I can't locate ANY documentation regarding the LED lights.  After hours of researching online, I now only have an interest to shut them off and lower my electric bill.  HP has not impressed me with this marketable "feature".

View Solution.

A:ENVY PHOENIX Series - LED Lighting Control Solution

There is an application called HP Phoenix Lighting (or LED) Control which is used to control the LEDS.I discovered it in an older thread while perusing the topic. Check in the Control Panel or type it into the search box on the systray near the Windows symbol. There might even be an icon that represents the lighting control in the systray. My last HP product loan Omen 15 had an app called HP Omen Control, which allowed for control of groups of the keyboard backlighting. It allowed the owner to make custom color changes of the groups of keys.  If it needs reinstallation, then it must be done from the HP Recovery Manager. Check the reinstall software and aplications section of the HP Recovery Manager.  @NewEnvyOwner?Try the following softpaq. It is called the HP Phoenix Control utility. BTW, the HP rep you talked to was wrong. The softpaq was found in the self service download web portal for the Phoenix Envy 850 by HP Expert @Dragon-Fur.

That is the question posed on slashdot with this link:

Slashdot IT Story | Are Desktop Firewalls Overkill?

I know some of this was argued in another thread, but this now pertains closer to Corporate Level questioning versus the earlier argument which was more on the lines of Home Security and the fact that most people who use Routers are not using Corporate level Firewalls.

A:Are Desktop Firewalls Overkill?

I work for a company that has over 300 locations around the country. They have corporation security and customer security to take care of. That why I think all security methods should be done. Hardware security, software security and pass word protected systems operations and yes turning off things that shouldn't be on in the first place. Multilayer protection is a must IMHO. To my understanding some companies are cutting back on I.T to save money; not a wise move. Money saved today doing these cutbacks will cost many times that savings tomorrow.

Hello HP Support Forum,I would be grateful if you could tell me whether my pre-built HP ENVY Phoenix 860-000nj Desktop PC should be compatible with NVIDIA's new GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card or not. I should note that this desktop of mine has been running a GTX 980 Ti on a 500W power supply for almost six months now without a single problem. I've added a link with the full specifications below.Thank you!

I turn on the defrag and Optimized my c drive as you advised me but my question is also are there other changes I might need to change to get more speed out of this SSD drive?  My PC had Windows 8.1 Pro when I first got it and here on the HP support Form I found a list of steps to change, but I have not found this list in my files yet. Are you saying that Windows 10 has been changed in this issue that it makes all changes from a standard drive to a SSD drive,so we don't need to do anything?Thank You for your Help...Dan

Cranky_Eagle YES -- Win10 knows when the OS is running on an SSD and already has built-in the functions it needs to work effectively with an SSD.  There is nothing you need to do. I've been running Win10 on an SSD and never had to do anything to get it to work properly.Good Luck

I'd like to upgrade the firmware on my 800-089 hard disk (SSD) but I cannot make the computer boot from a USB key. I have tested the USB key on another computer and it is working fine. I did change the BIOS settings such as boot order, security and legacy but nothing worked so far. I'm out of ideas...

A:Boot from USB on HP ENVY Phoenix 800-089 Desktop PC

Hey there  @SdeGat,Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts and other support personnel. I understand that you are having trouble trying to boot from a USB flash device needed to update your SSD firmware. I am happy to help with this. Please see the following document: How to Boot from a USB Flash Drive in Windows 10 -  It includes how to see up the boot process from within Windows 10. Give it a try and see if the flash device is shown there, and let me know, and if it does resolve your issue, please mark this post as a solution. Kudos would also be appreciated.

I've been considering buying the HP Envy Phoenix 860-019. I don't like buying a pc over the internet though. I am finding it impossible to find this model anywhere in my Province at retail stores like Best Buy, Staples etc, they have them online as well but don't carry the lastest models in-store anymore. This has been ongoing for a long while. I also noticed the price increased recently by $100. Canadian at HP Canada & online at other stores which seems odd for what now isn't HP's latest. This brings me to another question. I see that HP in the U.S. has a model I would prefer buying, it's the Envy Phoenix 860st. I'm able to select larger hdd's, Cpu etc. Why is HP not making this available in Canada? Personally I think HP is making a mistake, I'm not buying the Envy 860-019 but would buy the 860st if it were available here. I'm likely to have a local shop build one to my specs instead which I've done a couple of times in the past.

Using pc's since 82. First pc bought 1988. Every day I'm still learning new things about computing.

This is a peer to peer help forum. The only presence that HP has on it are the Admins and the Mods. Otherwise, none of us works for HP. I have a HP Phoenix 860-170VR (you can review the specs) that has similar specs to the 860-019.  In fact, it has a HDD instead of a SSD.  It is a very nice computer with good system performance.  HP has loaned it to me so I can help members with their problems.  I wouldn't hesitate to buy the 019. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

I bought the HP phoenix 860-019 a couple of weeks ago and from day 1 it freezes up. There is no one particular thing I am doing, it is very random. Could be 10 mins into use or a couple hours.  All drivers are up to date. I have read that the nvidia 860 card that is installed has issues with windows 10 but don't see any fixes. That drive is up to date as well.  This was a refurbished computer could that be the issue?  Should I reinstall windows? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Greetings great minds: I am a truly marginally tech inclined, so I am reaching out to those with more skill than me. I have a H9-1215t Phoenix desktop running windows 10.  The computer is used daily, but only fully powered down on a weekly basis. Recently my computer has begun spazzing out on the power up from a full shut down.  When I press the power button the computer will start the process, the hard disk light may or may not begin to flicker, the the computer shuts down.  A few seconds later, without any input, it will try and start up again and then shut down again.  I don't know if this is a damaging process so when it is powered down I unplug and wait a minute, then plug it back in and try again.  After three or four trys, it finally begins the boot process and has no more problems...until I fully power down again. Any idea what the issue could be?  I don't want to scrap the computer...configuring a new one and loading software is a major hassle.I don't mean to insult myself, but if you could dumb down your responses that would be really helpful.

General info: winxp pro sp2, all updates applied (except sp3), AVG 8.5 free with virus db 271.1.1/2986, zonealarm 8.0 (needs replacing), malwarebytes; no old traces or other protection software was installed at the time of thisincident(7/7/10). While browsing with FireFox 3.0.19, my wife did a google search. The link she wanted to take was marked "safe" by avg with a green check mark. She selected the link, which was taking a long time to load, so she switched windows to an open game of Solitaire and made a move. All of a sudden she got an AVG alert which stated "Threat was Detected", the next line said "Phoenix Exploit Phoenix (type 1112)". The offending application was Firefox.exe and it also listed a file name which was not visible as the path was too long. It appeared to be pointing inside of one of the firefox profiles. The alert popped up on top of the solitaire window and she sort of panicked and just hit her "google button" to get the page off the suspect one, so she didn't see anything going on in the browser tab. I got home (she left everything just like it was - except she locked ZA) and all I could see was the alert box over a google search page. When I looked at the AVG events/log/scan results/virus vault... nothing indicated anything out of the ordinary had happened. Also, I have not had any trouble with browser redirection, which seems to be a hallmark of this exploit, or any other malware/performance type problems... Read more

I decided recently to take the plunge and make the biggest purchase I have ever made. I had recently beaten homelessness and unemployment and now had the financial security to buy myself a great computer! My excitement didn't last long though. When I ordered my computer it was advertized as coming with a GTX 980 and the one I got contained a Radeon 390x. I was pretty angry as no email had been sent to me informing me about the change,  I may not be close to living on the streets again, but $1,100 - $1,300 isn't money I can just throw around. I'd at least want to know if something had been changed. Further more, I've had the computer for 3 days and have had about 20 crashes that restarted my computer. I called HP Support, but they say the can't do anything without seeing a crash firsthand. The crashes are all verifiable in the logs! I have 20 crash dumps sitting on my harddrive right now! I'm at the point that I think I'll just eat the increased cost to return this computer and build my own. This is the second time I've gotten burned by HP products and customer support and I'm thinking it will be the last.I currently work at a NOC for a fortune 500 IT company, and I know it can be busy and thankless work, but not using the logs and tools provided to dianose an issue is not acceptable.

A:HP ENVY Phoenix 860-170VR Desktop: Bluescreen and hardware ...

Hello Klutzydrummer, I know you have looked through the log files to see the crashes but do you know what driver is causing the blue screen crashes. If I may make a suggestion if it does not show it you can download bluescreenViewer from NirSoft and that will tell you which kind of blue screens you are getting and where they are coming from. Once having those it will be easier to see if this is software (and where) or if it is a hardware issues.  Thanks

I am preparing to upgrade from Win 8.1 to Win 10. According to the HP Support site the BIOS should be upgraded before upgrading to Win 10. The BIOS currently installed as reported by msinfo32 is "AMI 80.16, 05/12/2013".  According to the HP Support site page for my product, the latest HP Consumer Desktop PC BIOS Update (ROM Family SSID 2AF3) software available is sp72302.exe Version 80.24 Rev A, Aug 3 2015. I temporarily disabled my Antivirus (Norton Security), and exited ZoneAlarm Firewall Free, and then attempted to download and install this new BIOS version using "HP Download and Install Assisstant (Recommended)". The download part suceeded, and a cmd window launched, and all operations displayed within it appeared to proceed without error. After the cmd window closed, the remaining dialogue window indicated that the BIOS update was also successful. No automatic reboot occurred so I then closed that dialogue and manually rebooted. After logging in again and re-running msinfo32, the BIOS version reported is unchanged at "AMI 80.16, 05/12/2013". To double check I rebooted and used F10 to enter the BIOS. At that level in System Information, the BIOS version is reported as "KAI v80.16 12/05/2013", so it seems that the BIOS update to the new v80.24 Rev A in fact did NOT succeed. What do I need to do to successfully update the BIOS to Version 80.24 Rev A?

Connect a  different USB  keyboard to one of the PC usb 2.0 ports at the rear of the PC instead of the current keyboard. Disconnect the hard disk from the sata port and then press the power button. What happens?  The issue you are having could have been just coincidental to the time that you happened to upgrade to Windows 10. Your PC is a 2012  model and your Pegatron motherboard may have just ceased to function.  Unfortunately, It does happen.

Turn off your pc

Anything I can do here to get back to windows without losing any files please? I don't wish to use the Troubleshooting option if it will erase any files on the HDD?

A:Sony Vaio E series Laptop cannot go to desktop

You should be able to "refresh" your pc without losing your files. Im not sure about programs, but personal files you shouldnt lose. This should  work, I have done it myself and the Microsoft website also says it will not remove personal files when you choose this option. But I will say do it at your own risk. If it works, back up your personal information onto an external media for safe keeping incase something like this happens again.

I have an Acer AST 160-US321H desktop PC that is not connected to the internet and used for home projects only. Today I can not get it to come up at all. I have turned it on and off several times hoping to reset whatever went wrong. Also, there is a red light shining next to the green power light once I power it up. Nothing happens on the screen. The CPU is running (at least the fan) but that's about it. Any suggestions?

So, yeah. 5 year warranty compared to two of Buffalos and WDs, but does that actually mean that much more reliable a drive? With the problems with Seagate drives lately and a price slightly lower than with other similar drives I'm a bit wary... I won't be storing/backuping anything of real importance, just a handier option compared to a squadron of flash drives How much limited is the warranty actually? Manufacture flaws with no responsibility over the lost data or what? I'm a bit... Uncomfortable with any kind of warranty or RMA thing....

I am SERIOUSLY thinking of buying HP TouchSmart 610 Quad series All-In-One desktop with following (customized) specs.

However, I DO NOT like the graphics card 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M - looks like they are putting laptop graphics card into a desktop.

My question(s) is/are :

Can I replace this card with one of the NVIDIA GTX series graphics card ? Which one will you recommend? I want to put in a new GTX 590 or any of the following :

GeForce GTX 580
GeForce GTX 570
GeForce GTX 560 Ti
GeForce GTX 560 (new!)
GeForce GTX 550 Ti

Will it be a simple SWAP or I need to upgrade PSU as well.

If I need to replace PSU what will be specifications of the new PSU? I do not know what is the rating of the current PSU. Do you think, it will handle the new GTX card?

I recently got an HP 2311x Monitor for Christmas and hooked it to a Lenovo H200 tower. I am unable to get past Windows splash screen. BIOS says "we apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this." I have tried going into safe mode and just about every other option to no avail. I asked HP tech support to see if bad monitor but it is fine. I also called Lenovo Idea tech support and they said a tech will call back. I think something is uncompatible with Lenovo and HP monitor. It worked just fine when it was hooked to an old CRT. Cant handle the latest flat screen technology perhaps?. Any suggestions?

A:Lenovo H Series Desktop is not responding to recent HP 2311x monitor

Do you know anyone you can borrow another monitor from?

Have you checked monitor settings to make sure frequencies are within the range supported by your display device?

Another option would be to manually disable the display adapter driver. What type of display adapter is involved? Intel, NVIDIA, AMD?

I have been reading info you've given others in the forum for a few weeks. I have followed some of the advice myself due to my husband running our machine after our norton expired We have an e-machine with XP. Recently, I installed all the Norton 2005 goodies with the firewall, installed spybot, spywareguard, and I run only mozilla's Firefox. Spybot seems to have gotten a lot of stuff, but DSO EXploit, Huntbar, and 3 unknowns won't go away. Am I running too many things on my machine? I am pasting my hijack this log in hopes that you can help me weed out the rest of the garbage. I notice a lot of yahoo stuff on there. Windows Defender
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer
Spybot Search & Destroy
Super Antispyware
Spyware Blaster
Zone Alarm
Hi-Jack this (yes I know that this is a very powerful tool, I have only used it once for a really bad infection)

Hey guys! I plan on building a high end gaming pc that will run anything with no problem. Yet, I have encountered 2 problems. I want to know two things. First of all here is my build...

Intel Core i7 4770k $340

Asus Sabertooth z87 $250

Evga Superclocked w/ ACX cooling geforce gtx 770 $420

Corsair dominator platinum 8gb (2 x 4gb) $125

Western Digital WD Black 1 TB $95

NZXT Phantom $120

ASUS 24X DVD Burner $27

CORSAIR HX Series HX1050 (1050 watts) $220

Microsoft Windows 8 Professional $140

COOLER MASTER Seidon 120XL Water CPU Cooler $74

Asus VK278Q Black 27" 1920x1080 2ms $295

Total = $2006 ( -$100 with deal )

So my two main concerns are...
1. is it necessary to have the video card to be super clocked? I may or may not overclock (more likely not) if that will make a difference.

2. is the power supply overkill? It will supply 1050 watts which seems like a lot! Anyone can recommend one but it must be modular!

If anyone has any tips on lowering the price that will be greatly appreciated. I know currently that Newegg has a deal with the cpu and motherboard combo with -$100 (an amazing deal!!!) so try not to change those two.
Thank you and have a nice day!

A:Is this overkill?

1. is it necessary to have the video card to be super clocked? I may or may not overclock (more likely not) if that will make a difference.Click to expand...

When you see a card sold with a higher clockspeed or memory speed than stock, it just means that it passed stability tests and or QC at the higher speed AND they can charge more for the card. Will it make a difference? Most likely only on a benchmark.

is the power supply overkill?Click to expand...

Yes. I would go with a 750W or so corsair, seasonic, pcpower&cooling or FSP unit.

Why is it that you want a modular pw supply? Other than neatness, there really is no other reason. I just take the unused leads and tie them together then stick them in an unused 5 1/4 bay. They are out of the way AND you do not have to worry about a loose connection with the modular type connectors.

I would add a ssd drive for the system drive. Nothing speeds up a system like a ssd.

I have the above PC and was hoping to increase the Ram size from 2gig to 4 gig.
I had a fruitless chat with Sony tech support (as usual) and they inform me that 2gig is the max for my machine.
The mobo has 4 ram slots 184pin config and at the moment is carrying 4 x 512m memory sticks type PC3200U and was hoping to fit 4x 1gig type PC3200U sticks. Unfortuately the PC takes for ever to boot with 4 x 1gig sticks in.
Can anyone advise if this machine is at its max of 2gig or can the BIOS be pursuaded to see 4gig?

Hopefully I can workout the new 4 x 1gig sticks config, if not I will have to return them to the supplier. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My ACT! 2006 is still running kind of slow and during the day I always have multiple programs working, usually ACT!, IE (several screens), and Outlook. I have seen some pretty good deals for either another half gig or one gig. Would going to one a half gig be overkill in a laptop, I have heard varying opinions on this matter?

I am also wondering if there are certian brands to stay with or stay away from? I just added a half gig stick from Crucial with no issues, but they are not the ones with the best deals currently. I have been seeing MemoryPro, Kinston and Micro on Ebay NIB for around $100 give or take.

Then learned about Sandboxie, then Appguard, and so on, SBIE and AG became my favorite upto this day. Simple, Light, and Effective malware protection...

Auslogic BitReplica

It's a great looking build - overkill will depend on what you plan to play and at what settings/resolution. This is such an open ended question that it can't really be answered well. If you're playing solitaire I would say yes... at any resolution this machine will be overkill.

ok- i have been going over a few of the newer posts tonight. as always- there are a few people wanting opinions on "which gaming card?", or "how much ram?", or "how's this for my new computer?".
i am not picking on anyone, don't worry.
i just wanted to bring something to attention, and hear the feedback/debate that results.

ok- i have had a number of different computers at my old age of 22, and with each computer, (usually) the speed/size of each component increases.
i'll tell you this though- my setup now (see my sig) runs my dsl internet connection, my paint shop pro 7, and microsoft Word just as well as the 500mhz pIII w/ 64mb ram and a 20.5 gig hdd that i owned years ago. keep in mind the apps that i just mentioned, and note that there are no games of any sort listed there!
does anyone else see where i'm going with this? where is the idea coming from that you must spend so much money to have a pc, when all you want to use it for is solitare and surfing the net?

I've been running the following configuration for a while now, and it has served me well, however, I would just like to know whether it is overkill or not?

Here's the list:

Microsoft Security Essentials (Ongoing beta)
PC Tools ThreatFire
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (with protection module)
Spybot - Search & Destroy
OpenDNS with custom filtering HOSTS file
Firefox 3.6 Beta 5 with Adblock Plus
Windows Firewall
Router Firewall (locked down fairly tight, see pic.)
Those with an automatic update feature are updated daily, the rest I tend to do on an 'every other day' basis.

I also perform daily scans with MSE and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

I'm pretty careful myself and I make sure I know where I am going, however, my mum, sister, and her partner are a nightmare. Especially with facebook, eBay, ordering crazy stuff from China, internet offers etc.

So, is this overkill, or am I doing the right thing?

I was debating whether to drop Spybot - Search & Destroy, and possibly Spywareblaster. Spybot 2.0 rapidly seems to be turning into vapourware, and I'm not convinced Spywareblaster is keeping up to date with Firefox releases.

What do all you security experts think?

A:My security - is it overkill?

A:Overkill-what Is To Much Protection

There is no such thing as overkill when it come to the protection of your computer. However there are such thing as to many interface as in using to many firewall or antivirus as a primary. For example, having spyware terminator and Spybot S&D due to the fact the spybot is mostly wanted for it teatimer.exe but occasionally spyware terminator would stop the app from running, hence to much interface. Hope it helps.

For the first time I have installed an integrated security package, namely Kaspersky Internet Security.

Prior to this I was using AVG Free for anti virus and Sygate personal firwall. Together with this I was and still am using Spybot Search & Destroy with tea timer active, Spyware Blaster and Winpatrol.

You may imagine the number of pop up warnings I get when installing or updating software!

The question is do I need this lot, is it security overkill or should Kaspersky cover all bases on its own?

Derek Smith

A:Security Overkill

The basic rule is this, one active antivirus, one active firewall, the others on-demand. So you have to choose, personally I would keep Spybot, and remove AVG, spywareblaster and winpatrol. Use Kaspersky for realtime antivirus and firewall (if included, I dont know the program, but I think firewall is included).

If you like you can let a realtime-antispyware, but i think thats covered already by Kaspersky IS.

what does graphic card overkill mean

A:what does graphic card overkill mean

Hello Gaga,

It usually means that the graphics card is way more powerful than what you would ever need or use for your system. Thus the overkill.

For example, buying a $700 high end graphics card for a computer that you only use to surf the internet and email with, when any cheaper $80 or less card would probably work just fine instead.

Hope this helps,

I have a Linksys voip router that I must keep since I use Vonage. I want to create a wireless network, so what would be the most cost-effective way? Is an additional router more expensive than necessary? Is there another piece of hardware, such as an access point, that will work? I will be most appreciative of any and all answers to this question. Thanks!

A:Solved: Is a router overkill?

We've got Vonage as well.

What we do is run the Vonage box through our router, and it works perfectly fine without any signal or packet loss.

All you've got to do is take the WAN wire from the Vonage router and run it into one of the ports in your router, and have it act as if it were another computer. Works flawlessly.

Hello everyone,

Currently, do to some unwanted trojans, I have downloaded and tried several programs to remove them.. I'm still in the process and almost done. There is obviously no need for me to have so many anti-virus/spyware programs so...

I was wondering if you could help me decide what programs to remove and what to keep...(also any "new/different" ones I should download that may be better)
Also, what firewall should I install???

Please keep in mind that I am cheap and don't want to pay for any programs.... (College Student) so freeware would be nice!

Here are the current programs I am using
-Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
-AVG Free 8.0
-Ad-aware 2008
-Spybot Search and Destroy
-Windows Defender
-Spyware Doctor (not registered and not going to pay for it) *probably gonna just get rid of this one

I'm not really using any specific firewall and thats probably the reason for my computer problems so I'm going to install one for sure.

Thanks for the suggestions!

My osCommerce website got hacked and was infected with blackmailware which rkill and MBAM sorted, I think.

However when I run rkill now, I get

I've been over the system with MBAM and it is happy, Norman is happy, ESET found and deleted three tmp files, BT NetProtect (an ISP version of McAfee's) has remained quiescent throughout - useless, in other words.

I uninstalled Chrome and reinstalled it.

Is rkill just allergic to Chrome or is there further ugliness to be undone?

When RKill is able to terminate these processes and fix certain registry keys, that usually allows other tools to perform scans and clean up routines to remove the infection. RKill just kills processes, imports a Registry file that removes incorrect file associations and fixes policies that stop us from using certain tools... RKill - What it does and What it Doesn't - A brief introduction to the programAll files listed in an RKill log are not necessarily malware related. The list of processes shown as terminated are any processes that were killed while RKill was running even if those processes were not terminated directly by RKill. In addition to killing common malicious processes, RKill also terminates executable files running from a user profile by design. Programs should not be running from a user profile as they are meant to hold data, preferences, settings, and configuration files. Determining whether a file is malware or a legitimate process usually depends on the location (path) it is running from and the user profile is a common hiding place for malicious files. For some reason Google Chrome continues to have their programs execute from within a user profile so that is an issue with Chrome, not RKill. If you are able to run Malwarebytes Anti-Malw... Sup guys! would really appreciate some info and advice here. I have an Intel D875PBZ motherboard and i previously had 2 sticks of DDR 256 Corsair Platinum Series XMX3200 @ 400MHz. I wanted to upgrade in memory so i recently installed 4 gigs of A-Data DDR to fill out my slots. I find that with the 4 sticks installed, i have serious sound issues. loud screeching noises when trying to run video games and then when exiting the games, the noises continue when running any application using sound. When i used just 2 sticks, the games became stable. Am i stuffing in too much memory that this mobo cannot support? also is there some type of software to adjust the memory voltage on this mobo or will i be forced to get a new mobo that will allow me to change the voltage on? It does ask when installing to adjust to 2.6+0.1V. Please help!!!! Thank You!!!

Specs: Processor: Pentium 4 3.2 GHz
Video Card: Geforce 6800 Ultra

I know that you can't run two anti malware programs at the same time, but I am aware that some people use both an anti virus which they have on all the time and a dedicated anti spyware product such as spyware doctor, which they run once a week. I do know that anti spyware programs are much better at getting shut of the junk that your PC accumulates while browsing the web, which the av doesn't detect. Are they going to provide an extra level of protection that would be worth paying more for?

A:Is Using both an AV As Well As Dedicated Anti Spyware Overkill?

Hi BomberAF.
I have used Avast free since forever and never had problems. It has antispyware built in.

this is my first thread, and my first question. i feel like i have a long way to go on building a new gaming pc, but ill start here.

AMD athlon 64 4000+ is it an over kill???? the new computer is for gaming and all those lovely small applications. aim.word. etc.etc.etc...

or would a AMD athlon 64 3500+ be ok for gaming and whats not?

i went to toms hardware guide and i saw the FPS and obviously 4k+ is up there all the time.....

and i mean, HL2, Flight sim X, NFSMW, etc... all those good games, i want them to play flawlessy.

i know i have to take in consideration the motherboard, Ram and Video card.

mobo... IDK

ram... 2 gigs min... IDK wat brand

video ...... nvdia 7800 gtx.... , iv allways had nvidia, and i figured ill go all out with the card. .... ati is great... but ill pass.

and a 250gig drive or something....

iv read so much on the MOBo ill make a separate thread for that... lol, but guys. i still have time. i havent bought anything. i can allways save a lil more.

but im looking to spend around 1000...1200...max? max....can be a lil more flexible... the only downside on me being flexible is i have to save...which means more time...aaand id like it soon...

soo... im sorry if this is too long... and please tell me anything that i should be aware of...

thanks alot... to the site and everyone.

A:Is an AMD athlon 64 4000+ an overkill for gaming???

I guess it all depends on how long you want the CPU to last you.

I have the 3700 (939) and it performs amazingly, and it'll hold me over for some time yet. I don't think there would be much of a difference between the 4000 and my 3700 in today's games (maybe a few FPS), but as newer CPU intensive games come out, the difference will become more noticable.

If on a budget, I'm tempted to tell you to go for 2Gb of ram and a hot video card (7800GTX or X1900) and stick with the 3500 for now. It'll last you a good year or so before it starts lagging on you. Then upgrade to a nice dual core CPU when the prices are cheaper next year after the release of the M2 CPUs.

Hello everyone. :DFair warning: Idiot alert here.Alright, so, long story short - I'm looking into getting a new laptop. The problem is my last one was taken down due to a combination of my paranoia, and an infection that messed up the system when I tried to clean it. Oh, and then the HDD failed and I lost quite a bit of stuff. :/Therefore, I'm wanting to do it right this time so I'm trying to do my homework. Problem is, doing ones' homework entirely on a feature phone is a good way to learn just how many websites don't work on your phone. Not much else! This has left me with a bunch of questions which I'm hoping some of the kind people here can answer for me. Seems like this part of the forum was the best place since they all boil down to computer security questions.I'm, I guess, somewhat tech-savvy, since I do a lot of reading but I haven't done much practical application. So I'd say I know some things but don't necessarily understand them. Any light you can shed here would be wonderful. Thanks in advance, and uh... sorry for the crapton of questions/text.Dual-Booting Linux1) I've seen some tutorials on how to set this up, but my main question is: is setting this up as easy as it appears, or is there more to it? A:Is this overkill? And a bunch of other security questions.

Hi A few cents"If my Windows partition gets an infection, is cleaning it relatively simple with a dual-boot? (Go into linx, scan, clean, done?) Or would that just not be enough?"Hi I don`t think its possible to run a virus scan from Linux then scan and repair infected Windows Files..Windows Viruses Don`t affect any Linux version. If you want to install Linux the easy way then You can Install using WubiUsing this you can install ubuntu as an application that can be uninstalled from program & featuresNo need to worry about any boot menu issues.Disc Imaging is good way to back up things but you may need to buy a Disc Imaging utility like Norton ghost or Acronis True Image. Its takes an entire image of the HDD so Yes it takes up a lot of space. As for Antivirus goes you can go for paid or Free the choice is upto you.Malware Bytes Antimalware is free and has no real time component so you don`t have to worry about any conflicts.Using Limited Account is a Good Idea cause I guess even viruses need Administrator rights to work well. Don`t Change the User Account Control Setttings.Avoid Pirated Software/torrents many free alternatives out there that do a decent Job.IMO a weekly backup of Your HDD using Acronis or any Backup Utility + safe browsing is enough. As for the Virus Being copies to external device goes one of my friends got hit by ramnit and when I plugged my pendrive to his lappy all files/folder in my pendrive changed to shortcuts and scan of My Pendrive with Micro... WinXP Home--IE6--Outlook Express 6

I am security concious and based on recommendations on this forum have added the following security related software over a period of time which is running daily on my computer. I have had no security issues in over two years. However my computer has slowed down because of all the programs running, and bootup time is over 5 minutes so I very seldom shut my computer down.

I have AVG 9.0, Comodo firewall, Super Anti-Spyware,Spyzooka, Malwarebytes Anti- Malware, and Ad-Aware running. Is this overkill and if so what should I replace or eliminate to get better performance yet maintain my level of security?

I'm sure this is an issue that many of us who frequent this site have or have thought about so I am hoping for some answers that we all can benefit from.

Thanks for any advice!

Hello.... um... I'd like to ask about usb drive autorun....
from some time ago... I used this registry key to disable autorun on my laptop...

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\Autorun.inf]

I read it on some articles...
Then I discovered Panda USB Vaccine... and I've been using both ever since...
My question is... is it an overkill to use both?
especially with Panda USB Vaccine NTFS support that is still in (beta) build... Will it conflicted...?
Anyone have any experience with using both...? Or what autorun disabler software do you use...?

so sorry and many thank you's...
@moderator... -sorry i posted on the wrong SF before >_< -

A:<ASK> Panda USB Vaccine with Autorun Regedit. Is it overkill?

The vaccine disables the AutoRun feature on computers *as well as on USB drives and other devices*.

This is a ?vaccine? for removable USB devices, preventing the AutoRun file from becoming a source of infection. The tool disables this file so it cannot be read, modified or replaced by malicious code.

I don't think it's overkill ... just 'layered protection'

I have a set of HP Z210 Workstations with E3-1245-V2 Xeon Cpu's, SSD boot drives and varying sizes of memory from 8-16GB 1600Mghz DDR3 ECC. We use Windows 8 Enterprise for these machines, with Hyper-V enabled.
We get regular driver failures from the 2 sets of USB controllers on the machines (Mainly and issue for the KB & Mouse) that can only be resolved with a full power down (not restart) and a power up. This happens at least once every 1-3 days per machine.
I had gone through the HP support, but they have advised this isn't an issue on their side, and I had agreed all along. I was just hoping to get some traction by notifying them. Anyway, after a lengthy trouble shooting session, we found that once Hyper-V
was enabled, the fault arose.
As it was an Intel chip, they I asked them. They advised that on Windows 8, the drivers are supplied via windows update and that it was not their issue.
So, how can I get this resolved? Not through HP or Intel, surely through MS? Maybe not. Disabling Hyper-V is not desired as I the teams with these PC's are developers and require local visualization. Also, we have templates ready for Hyper-V, I don't really
want to remove Hyper-V and use Virtual box or VMWare workstation. but I am at wits end with the fault and lack of help from the vendors.
Please help.

A:Hyper-V causes Intel(R) Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller driver to fail

I have found a work around for this fault with the USB failure - ENSURE YOU POWER  THE MACHINE OFF - DO NOT RESTART.
Its almost like the restart doesn't initialise the device correct, thus causing a failure.

With the new year, we start a fresh discussion for members to share their order and fulfillment experiences.
We are retiring the 2014 thread    Anyone having an active discussion there can find it here.
The 2012-2013 tread  can be found here .
Here are some common points of frequent discussion:

How to get a system fast: Buy an in-stock standard configuration from Lenovo or a Lenovo Partner in your area. Customized systems take longer.
Avoid Credit Holds - ensure that BOTH your bill to and ship to addresses are listed with your CC bank before ordering
Lenovo will not bill your card until order ships - an authorization charge hold to check for available balance may show up when order is first placed.
Estimated ship dates are based on default lead time and can vary from what was displayed on website.
In the US and Canada, Lenovo utilizes UPS for new product shipments
Orders may ship before the Estimated Ship Date
Orders may enter through Alaska and pass through Louisville, KY before traveling on to final address
Cancellation requests may take up to 2 days to process
Requests to change configuration or other aspects of the order may require the order to be rebooked.
Lenovo does not accept payment via international credit cards, except AMEX.

We hope you enjoy your new ThinkPad system when it arrives!

I know it's been posted a s#!+load of times, but I figured I'd go ahead and get something straightforward- all the other posts have been in jungle English, and haven't included the proviso I'm looking for.

Anyways, my situation is that I bought my X1900GT from Newegg around Christmastime, as a present to my ainsel (ownself, for those not familiar). I've been getting kind of disappointed in it recently: It underperforms and often crashes on STALKER:Shadow of Chernobyl and some more modern games akin to it. It also runs hot as Hades.

I'm in the market for a new card. I'd like to go DX10, but the late-production DX9's (7900 series) seem to outperform a lot of the more affordable DX10 offerings (8600 series), especially at higher resolutions, due to the 128-to-256 bit difference. I could splurge and go for an 8800, I suppose, but it would be a hit to the wallet and I'd have to postpone :cough: "Aruban Getaway 2008".

So: I don't want to pass up on the new line of DX10-only Games for Windows (Age of Conan, Crysis, etc.) that have been hyped to all hell just because I stuck with price and performance instead of currency and novelty. I need some help deciding. Then again, I could always wait until DX10 becomes the vogue and buy a cheaper, but better card then.

A:Price v. Performance in 7-Series + 8-Series: Advice Needed

Keep what you got and see what's comming next. I have a 8600GT as a stopgap until something better comes out. There has been talk of a Nvidia 256bit card to fill the gap between the 8600's and 8800's. I can't fit a 8800 in my case, if I could I would just get the 8800GTS 320mb now. If I were you, wait for the game to upgrade instead of upgrading and waiting for the game. Your X1900GT is no slouch either.

Hi I have some Toshiba Tecra M10 series but for some reason the laptop no longer works with a battery attached and just get flashing light on the laptop. It works fine with power but won't swatch on at all with a fully charge battery, I have tried many and it's not the battery. I have taken the laptop apart but can?t find anything that is wrong. So it must be the battery and or charge circuit, resisters, gone on the M10.

Anyway I was looking at a motherboard replacement. On looking about it appears that Toshiba released a M10 and a A10 series. They both look about the same to me with the same fittings but to be sure, can anyone tell me if a A10 motherboard, is the same as the M10 motherboard?

Maybe someone who works with these day in day out hopefully will know. Just don?t want to buy and A10 if it?s not compatible with M10 case and fittings.

Right here's the deal, my brothers computer was fine and dandy yesterday.

But, when they turned it on this morning, it immediatly goes to the Phoenix CMOS/BIOS system and requires a password to boot.

Thing is, I'm the only one in my family who would know how to even get on to BIOS/CMOS and change a password and set it so the PC needs one to boot!
However my Mum thinks the GVT are at long last hacking into the computer to steal her credit card details

(crazy I know)

But I really need to get this sorted, I can't even get onto windows.

It's a windows XP machine, built by Novatech with Phoenix- AwardBios.

I've tried "backdoor passwords" from the net...

Nothing seems to be working.

So please, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sigh... my 2nd temp. computer is infected too. I've recently posted about my main computers Rootkit/System Check infection, now the computer I'm using in it's place is in the same boat.

The past few days, I've noticed it going slower than it should have been. It's a fairly nice machine, so I thought maybe it was just clutter and needed a good thorough cleaning and defrag. After cleaning the computer up of it's clutter, unneeded programs, and running Malwarebytes, I expected it to run better, but it didn't, not at all.

I have been paying very close attention to the processes running and noticed that a Svchost.exe was almost always using the most memory, usually between 120,000k-180,000k. I suspected there was something fishy about that, because I know that Svchost is a legit process, but even still shouldn't soak up that much.

Yesterday, I was forced to perform a System Restore, because the computer was lagging so bad, that it would have taken hours just to check my FB. After the restore, it seemed to do fine until I turned it on today and it lagged again. I reset the computer and it seemed okay again. I was browsing Facebook for about 15 minutes when an AVG alert popped up saying "Exploit Phoenix Exploit Kit (Type 769)" and said that a certain file was infected.

I let out a big "AHAH!" when I clicked "More Details" and saw that the infected process was Svchost.exe.

I read this prior thread... Read more
