Is Media Software Required to Read Mini-CDs?

Q: Is Media Software Required to Read Mini-CDs?

Hey folks,

So many devices these days come with a driver on a mini-CD. My laptops (Acer and Toshiba) take forever to access them, then think they're blank and ask to format them.

In Googling this I found a guy who said he fixed this problem by reinstalling Roxio. Said his computer came with it but he'd uninstalled it cause he never used it. That it must "turn on" a feature in W7 or something, cause after he reinstalled it, his computer could read mini's.

When I got both my laptops I wiped all partitions (including the hidden "recovery" one), re-partitioned the way I wanted, and reloaded all drivers and W7 (64 Ultimate). The DVD players in both laptops have a central spindle, so they are designed to read mini-CDs. They DO detect them, but again, think they are blank.

Anyone heard of Roxio or other software being required to read mini's? Thanks much.

PS I have a lot of media software installed but not Roxio. (Nero, ImageBurn, Handbrake, Ashampoo, etc.)

A: Is Media Software Required to Read Mini-CDs?

Windows should be able to read your mini-CDs . You might want to eject the CD and place it in the middle . It will take a few seconds to read the disc due to it size. I never had an issue with mini-CDs being read.

A friend has sent a Mini-DVD-R disc to me, and I am unable to open, view or access the disc at all. I tried data recovery software, which said the disc was empty. It clearly is not. When trying to "explore" or open the disc, I get a "please insert disc" on the dvdrom drive, or a blank page in the dvd burner. The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is that the person who recorded it did not finalize it. Is there eanything else I can do? The video on here is school related. Others have said they cannot acces it either. Thank you for your help.

A:Solved: Mini DVD-R cannot be read

if others cannot acces it either, the problem is that your disk is empty.Ask your friend to burn it once again.

I'm getting a lot of Blue Screen errors on my server. It is throwing off Mini-dumps. However, I have no idea how to read them. Is there a program dedicated doing this? This is a challenge posting by CNChallenger.

A:How to Read a Mini-Dump

google is really easy to use. I just typed in your question. instead of reading the minidump that you review your event viewer logs and you capture the exact blue screen error then look it up via google. You would also start with basics like making sure the mainboard/cpu is clear of dust and all the fans are working correctly [just because they spin doesn't me they are at the right rpms]Then you would do your maintenance like running chkdsk /r, disk cleanup and defragRun your antispyware and antivirus after you have updated them.

Hi All,

I've been getting some random BSODs and I am wondering how to read the mini dump (.dmp) file or if someone can read it for me and tell me what it means.

The last two times my system crashed, I was using VOIP applications which makes me wonder if the crashes are a driver issue. The BSODs are happening very rarely... like maybe every 3 months (and I use my PC daily)... but I still have to wonder what is causing the problem.

Here's what Windows Event Viewer says:

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x1000007e (0xffffffffc0000005, 0xfffff88007941f8a, 0xfffff88002939898, 0xfffff880029390f0). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\Minidump\041313-44117-01.dmp. Report Id: 041313-44117-01.

Anyway... I went to Microsoft's Debugging Tools page but I am not sure what to custom install after I download the winsdk_web.exe file as there are debugging tools listed under the sections "Redistributable Packages" and "Common Utilities". Which one of these contains WinDbg which will allow me to read the .dmp file??

Download Microsoft Windows SDK 7.1 from Official Microsoft Download Center

If anyone can provide me with any assistance on this it would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Provided you have an adapter, I see no reason why not. The Mini SD to SD adapters are commonly available.

Without the adapter, the card would not be able to be extracted I suspect.

Hi, I was trying to figure out what caused the Stop error I last encountered. I tried searching for any clues on Windows XP's mini dump, but I can't seem to find it. All I see are drivers loaded at that time, but the actual file I'm searching for, the file that caused the crash as indicated on the Stop error, is not there. It's actually Speedbit's Video Accelerator file, sbbotdi.sys. I have to find that out the hard way - waiting for the PC to trigger the stop error again. I saw people here asking for the minidump and replying with the exact file that caused the error. Thanks a lot

Hi weeswally

Well, since your system has had a few things coming and going lately, let's start with the WMP 11's FAQs for this sort of thing:

"Q. Why doesn't the Player recognize my CD-R or CD-RW drive?
A. The drive is either not supported or not installed correctly.

"If the Player is running on Windows XP, search for your drive on Windows Marketplace Tested Products List ( ). If your drive isn't listed, it might not be designed for use with Windows XP and might not work correctly. To verify that your CD drive is recognized and set up to burn, do the following:

1. Open My Computer.
2. In the Devices with Removable Storage area, right-click the drive, and then click Properties. If your CD drive is recognized, you will see a Recording tab.
3. Select the Enable CD recording on this drive check box."

Those words are direct from Microsoft.

Another thing to check is that the background Windows XP service that CD recording relies on is setup properly. Right-click My Computer, select "Manage", and under "Services and Applications", select "Services" --- and make sure that the "IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service" is set to "Manual" (this will allow it to start when needed). If you want to check in on any other services, here's a guide to XP Services ---

Also, check... Read more

Do you have a DVD Writer on your PC? If so, it would come with a dosc containing software (like Nero) to 'burn' MP3 and Videos to disc. You can also google for similar software or search through popular software download sites like SNAPFILES, etc.

I have just purchased a WD mini media player to play my movies on my HD TV.
I have a WD My Book 2T Hard drive and all my movies are AVI.
After setting it all up i have picture but no sound on any movie.
What am i doing wrong or what can i do to fix the problem?

A:No sound with WD mini media player

There are two WD's the WDTV and the WDTV Live. The Live version of the box can convert DTS sound on the fly but since your using avi that shouldn't be the problem. You have two ways to get the video and sound to your set. One is the HDMI and you need to have the high speed cord to get the best quality (10,000gb/s I believe). The others are Composite (yellow) and component (red/green/blue) for video and then you have to use the (Red/White) audio to get the sound into your TV. There is another option and thats HDMI to DVI and since DVI is just video (like a monitor) you have to use the (Red/White) stereo connectors to get audio to the tv.

Hello there,
I am trying to install a webcam on my Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit. I feel i should also mention that I had bought this laptop from a friend a year or so ago and i decided to reformat it to Windows Vista Home Premium Lite (due to the excessive programs i didn't use and it was running really slow) about a month ago. Back to the problem. I load the installation disc and it all installs up until the point of the driver. When it starts to install the driver it encounters an error. It tells me that (for example Microsoft HD-5000 webcam) "Microsoft HD-5000 is not in the required .INF" or something along those lines. This message has popped up for 3 different webcams that I've tried to install. I even Went the extra mile and bought the HD-6000 for notebooks and still doesn't work.
-I've tried going to the manufacturer's website and installing the latest software and still the same problem.
-I've also tried going to the device manager and trying to update the driver. and still the same message.
-I've even tried locating the Driver myself to install it and Same thing.

Someone Please help me install this webcam! I am trying to webcam my girlfriend that is 800 miles away! PLease Someone HELP!!!

A:Driver Software not in the required .INF

Just a quick thought, but are you doing the installation WITHOUT the webcam plugged in? That's how I believe it needs to be done. If the webcam is plugged in while installing, it may explain the problems you are encountering (I'm not certain about this at all as I don't have a webcam, but the procedures are clear on the order of events at least for the HD-6000 which I looked up and there might be a reason for that). See: Microsoft Webcam Basics. If you've been doing it with the webcam attached, detach it and try installing that way and see if it helps.

If not, then you might try Microsoft Support at: though I have no idea if it is available for free or if they charge (I think it depends and where and how and when and what - but I can't get past that screen to figure it out because I don't know the Product ID Number). If it costs, I probably would not pay and would find some other solution but if it's free, then they may well be able to help you.

I hope this helps. If not, post back and we'll do more research to see if we can find a cause and a solution - though to be honest you've already tried pretty much everything I would typically suggest (and trying 3 different webcams with the same error suggests the issue isn't the camera itself) so it may take some time to come up with anything else to attempt. Incidentally, what do you mean by a "Lite" version of Vista - I wasn't aware that such a thing ex... Read more

Dear all technicians and other IT guys...
I have passed my Microsoft & CompTIA A+ exams and I want to increase my knowledge base and become a better technician.

I would like to ask for some help, I need software's/programs that can help me repair computers, such as boot problems, viruses, scanners, hardware checking, reconfiguration software in case system viruses destroy it completely and other stuff like that...

I would be greatfull for any information, names, links, programs/software's recommended..

ohhh and it would be great if you guys can list any tools i can use for laptops (screw drivers, pliers, etc)

Many thanks guys,

A:Repair software required

Most hard drive manufacturers have a diagnostics ISO you can download and burn to disc to boot the PC and run the diagnostics.

Memtest86+ is about the best memory test you can get but is not 100%, it can miss minor faults. Running a PC on one stick at a time is a better test.

For the CPU & Memory combined there is Prime95.

For the GPU there is Furmark.

A quick search will find all that I have mentioned above.
Then you need to grasp memory dumps for BSOD analasys, some guides are available on line.

I still have a lot to learn about in depth Malware detection and removal. Looking through the Malware forum will give you some idea of what programs to use but then you may need to find a good book on the subject to learn how to read all the logs.

As far as tools go just a good selection of small hand tools including a set of small screwdrivers and a good quality multi meter.

You should have a selection of spare memory, hard drives (3.5 and 2.5 IDE and SATA) a hard drive USB adapter and a spare PSU. Having a few CPU's and a graphics card can also be usefull.

For boot problems you need the full set of Windows OS's to run repair installs and to fix the MBR. Learning how to repair the MBR using the Command Prompt can be usefull.

And that is just a very brief answer. You will never stop learning as there will always be new stuff to learn, faults you have never seen before, etc, etc.

Hi all! First time poster here, and over the past six or so months I've been trying to ensure that my wife and I have secure computers. We're behind a hardware firewall, a Dlink wireless router, so I'm talking specifically about security software that I have purchased and installed on both of our computer(s).

It may be overkill, but this is what I've got:

1) ZoneAlarm Pro Anti-virus + Firewall
2) Malwarebytes Anti-malware Home (Premium)
3) Malwarebytes Anti-exploit (Premium)
4) Adblock Plus
5) Secunia PSI

I'm also pretty meticulous about making sure that we're up to date on patches, software updates, etc.

What precautions have you taken against
a. Ransomware
b. Theft
c. Disk failure

a. To stop it:

To recover from it:

Hello All,

I work IT for a local middle school that runs about 20 student laptops per class. Lately we've noticed that there are students who've found ways of goofing off and going to youtube and watching videos or what have you (as one would naturally suspect). Anyways, I now find myself in need of some sort of monitoring software that would allow us to catch kids in the act of goofing off and not staying on task. Can anyone recommend any commercial software for this? Our computer total is at 95 and ideally we'd like to be able to monitor all screens so that we can find out who's not doing their work when they're supposed to. Of course minimum pricing is preferable since we're a public school and are therefore on a budget. Thanks for the help!

Win7 installer is mostly driver-complete with newer arriving quickly via optional Windows Updates when you enable hardware auto-updating: Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware

Afterwards any drivers missing in Device Manager can be imported from the Support Downloads webpage for your model device.

I would not change out any drivers issued by the installer and updated by optional Updates unless performance problems point to that driver.

If Win 8 isn?t supported on your notebook, such driver isn?t available.

You do not have flash player installed.

Download and install them from here:

Recently, I have come across several pieces of software that say they require media player 9 to work. 1 was even microsofts news clips on the msn in web site. Another is a learnkey learning disk. I have media player 10, but for some reason, the software on both ends won't work. When I go to install 9, it tells me a greater version is already installed, and it won't let me go to 9, however the software continually tells me that I need 9. Any advice appreciated.

One of our software providers has instructed us to make some changes to our Win 8 PC's registry to get the software to work properly. They have sent me details of what changes are required:
TYPE: Select Allow Applies to: Select This key and subkeys Click/Check: Full control and Read Click OK on Entry detail screen Click OK on Entries list screen

I know very little about Windows Registry other than not to touch it. These changes seem quite extreme. Can someone tell me what they are basically doing?
The software company is being a little coy. I just want to understand what I am doing.

Any assistance appreciated.

A:Registry edit required to get some software to work.

Hi there

IMO the SOFTWARE providers should do all this in their install setup. The only time you should have to make registry changes should be for an emergency fix and even then they should be able to send you a .reg file which will do it automatically.

I'd be very loathe to purchase software from someone who relies on the END USER to make registry edits -- if you make a mistake you can easily hose up a system.

I just ordered a new hard drive for my presario laptop from new egg. I will assume I can just plug it in and run the 4 recovery disks and restore to factory condition. But I would rather clone the HD and not have to bother with all the updates and such. I also purchased a USB to 2.5 exernal case where I could plug in the new drive and transfer, but after further investigation i.e. Tech Guys, I'm thinking I may be tripped up W/O cloning software. Hi All,

I need some decent computer backup software, recently I've been using Aoemi, but have had issues with it and decided to leave it.

I am absolutely paranoid with my data, my main concern is personal data, windows and software can always been reinstalled.

I was at first using Windows 10 File History, but I had these issues:
Only does it for current user (Not useful)I was running out of space on my 3TB HDD, I think windows was duplicating many files. When I removed files like C:\users\XX it would re-include them again

Is the Windows 7 backup and restore still 100% supported?, I don't mind using it at all, all my backups go onto a network However I did like how file history backed up changes files every X minutes. This would be quite nice.

I am looking for reliable software which works out of site, and if I accidentally shut-down my PC it will continue on reboot (Aoemi, never did this spent hours backing up data and it sometimes failed for long directories).

What software/solution do people recommended?
I don't mind paying for software up to ?100, but it will need to support 3PCs at least.

Kind regards

Some people want their Start Menu back. Although I love the new Start Screen and tiles, there are times when I am on the Desktop that I wish I could launch a regular Windows application. Instead of having a bunch of icons on my Desktop, a menu would be better.

I don't like installing additional software, like the Start Menu 'restorers', so I tried to figure out a way to do it without installing anything.

So, here's a way to fake the Start Menu by using the built-in Taskbar functions. It's not as pretty and complex as the Start Menu, but it's sure better than having a bunch of icons on your Desktop or spread across the Taskbar.

I upgraded my Click Mini to Windows 10 as soon as I got it yesterday.

All appeared well until I restarted it and it would not boot, reporting there was a drive problem.

Eventually, after using the keylogger to unlock the drive, I reset the machine (asking it to keep my files and it has reinstalled Windows 10 but I seem to have lost the Toshiba programs that were on there.

They don't appear in the program list.

Is there a way of getting them back without reverting the unit back to Windows 8.1 in Recovery and then putting Win 10 back on.
Took hours.

Thanks for any help.

Hi all,

I am currently using winxp media 2005 on a system bought from Alienware. It has had issues since day one, including, No windows updates, no way to disable chkdsk, no back up copy for any software or hardware driver/programs, and perhaps the worst, the lack of ability to use the system restore disk(my system restore is disabled and cannot be turned on, so Im scared to attempt to use my restore disk) All menu's related to the above mentioned problems simply seem to do nothing, I can go in and click to enable/disbale interact with them, but nothing changes. I know you are thinking I should contact Alienware, but they have voided my warrenty, so Im stuck.

In case you are wondering, when I first recieved my computor, it was crashing to blue screen (the first time i turned it on untill I called them the next day). After calling tech support one of the alienware reps had me open the case while on the phone with him, and pop my video cards in and out to resolve a possible heat issue.

Well, I was informed later that because I opened the case that all warrenties and tech support are null and void. So.. Im stuck. I'm over it now, I went round and round with them, and ultimately I simply cant afford to fight it in court.

What I was looking for here was recomendations or some guidance in replacing my OS. Im cautious because Alienware uses a modfied version of it's OS and I dont want to encounter issues with my hardware due to Alienwares settings and modificati... Read more

Hi guys - hope you can help. Some really easy to follow advice on here - fingers crossed I have done what you have asked of me.

Ok my problem - all of a sudden AVG wouldnt work, I uninstalled and re-installed - still no joy. Ran the AVG tool to uninstall all registry enteries - still no joy. It just would not finish installing

So I tried ESET - same problem. Then Avira - finishes installing but states ' scheduler not started ' so I cannot turn on my Anti Virus guard.

I have tried everything. I have ran CC Cleaners, Registry Cleaners, Spy Hunters, etc, etc - and tried them again in safe mode! I just want to be able to get some anti virus software working again on my PC. My Security Centre is constantly warning me that no Anti Virus software is installed and I am scared to use my online banking because of this.

Hope you can help guys

I am currently running a Pentium IV with 512 RAM, XP Pro, and lots of disk space, I have a TDK 440N installed with current firmware (although I have tried all the older versions also). This drive burns and reads CDs (data, music, and video) fine, and it plays DVDs fine; however when I insert a blank DVD+R (4x) it will not read even the blank disc. The cursor shows the CD icon next to it then when it stops spinning the drive reads as empty. I have treid many programs and different brands of media (both suggested and not -- by TDK). The computer seems to not recognize the media at all. The drive came with a version of Roxio Easy CD\DVD Creator, I have treid this as well as Nero, Alcohol 120, and numerous other programs, but none ofhtem seem to be able to see any type of blank DVD I put in the drive. I possess limited hardware and software knowledge and I am hoping that someone with more expereince will be able to help me. Thank you.

I am running Windows XP SP3, and my DVD drive is a LG GH22NS30.

The problem that I am having is that when I put a CD or DVD into the drive, most times it does not recognize the disc and will not allow me to access it. OK - so, after much poking around on the internet and on my computer settings, here is what I have done.

In Device Manager, under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers I went into the properties for the SATA controller that my DVD drive is connected to. It was set to use the DMA transfer mode. I changed this to PIO, and now it is reading all the discs that I put into it. Is this a proper fix for my problem? Which transfer mode is best?

I always had a problem with scratching my CD's, so in 1998 I started making backups of all my music on my computer. Worked great until a few years ago when I got a decent stereo for my computer.

I keep everything Music\Artist\Album\ and I'm having problems because people are moving one folder into another one. And I just noticed today that I'm missing a Zeppelin CD that I remember getting as a gift when I was 19 (NOT COOL).

I've been looking around online all day for a solution and I can't seem to find anything. There are a ton of file security programs that will hide everything, but that won't do me any good. I need to somehow make these files read only. And I mean really read only, not the BS checkbox in windows that lets you do whatever you like to the file. I want to be able to play them, but I don't want to be able to delete them or change their locations. Closest I've come is File Guard by superhero software, and all it does is make a log of the deletion so I don't spend an hour trying to figure out what happened to it like I did today.

Thanks a lot. Sorry if this is the wrong section of this.

This is either a fatal error or simple miss by me:
HP Envy 700-056 desktop. Windows 8 x64 (NOT SURE IF 8.1 IS INSTALLED)
The system began to freeze up, then was rebooted. Now it only goes to a blue screen that says:
Your PC needs to be repaired
The boot configuration data for your PC is missing or contains errors
Error code: 0xc0000185
You'll need to use the recovery tools....etc, etc, etc.
Now according to my research this SHOULD be a x64 system, so I used the x64 Recovery/Repair disk I made back when I had 8.0 (but should work?) . It loads the HP logo screen then just keep circling endlessly. Using my 8.1 laptop I made a Recovery/Repair USB drive and tried that but it doesn't work either.
Should I let the Recovery/Repair go for 2 hours (typical repair time) or am I SOL??

Both hard drives have the same Win XP media center OS, drivers, and Norton loaded on them.

Dear Genius Helpers:
I have done so much to fix my laptop, XP media, SP2 that I'm not sure where to begin. As it says in the title, protection expired I wasn't aware of it and I've been working to fix the damage for about 2 weeks. I have cleaned all temp files several times, run: Adaware, CCleaner, Windows Defender, Advanced Windows Care, ComboFix and deep clean A-Squared. Found many bad files, deleted them. I installed Home version of Avast. I have attached a ComboFix log and would love for someone to take a look and see if there is something obvious that is causing the one thing [or more] I need help with: it takes forever to start [I've actaully turned off all start-up items] and very often, after starting [that is, desktop is up, folders are displayed on desktop and I have accesss to "start", etc] it goes into a deep sleep, screen is still on, nothing opens. I wait for sometimes 10-15 minutes, THEN when it "wakes up", every program I clicked on, every move I made, happens in split seconds. Sometimes it can open 15 windows, all stacked neatly behind one another. Thank you for any advice you can give. Deb

I was wondering with newer SSD's if it is correct or not that programs can read the temperature of an SSD.

Like you can with a HDD.

I am using a program called AIDA64 notice at times my two internal SSD's read 44c.

Two i have are:
Crucial MX100 CT512MX100SSD1 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive
Crucial MX100 CT256MX100SSD1 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive

Most say they do not get too hot or not really hot at all, due to no moving parts and less power consumed.
Never remember my HDD reaching past 37-38c

2.5" to 3.5" bracket i have fits 2 SSD's and makes them sit close to each other, one above the other in a 3.5" bay.
Pretty open around it, i have two case fans, nothing else it getting too hot, but it is summer time here and i do notice a difference compared to winter with rest of the components.

A:Can software read temps on SSD

They have a sensor built-in like HDDs that software can read. Speccy reads my Adata SSD. Always seems cooler than my hard drive, does warm up a tad if doing some intense read/writes. As long as S.M.A.R.T. reports it is within tolerance then shouldn't be anything to worry about.

Hi, can anyone link me to some software that will read my GPU's temp as i'm gonna overclock it and need to know when enough is enough, lol.

A:Software to read my GPU's temp????

if you're overclocking your GPU you're best to see when it starts causing screen artifacts not by how hot it is. Motherboard Monitor might be able to read the GPU temp if it has a sensor but it really depends on whether the plugin has been coded & whether your GPU has a sensor on it.
Also it would help to specifiy which card you have or even if its a Radeon or GeForce based card.
I use ATiTool for overclocking my Radeon. It is very easy to use & has some very good features (like Find Max Core & Max RAM speeds) and it has a built in Artifact Tester.

Hi !

I am wondering what is the best database software able to do this specific function.

for exemple if there is 4000 entries or cards... that have an information regarding schedule and time of operation and non operation... the database will be able to sort or signal the entries that are suposed to be ON at 3 pm, 30 mns before, for exemple in function of there field of activity or location or any other details.

Just mainly the database should be able to run automaticaly with the clock and sort differently in function of the present time or another detail.

Sorry if my words are weird or unprecise, I'm not anglo native and not really programmer ...

But in advance thanks for your help

A:WANTED ? software able to do that

Calendar or scheduling program would do it. Most any relational database can do what you want as long as you can program it do do what you want.

oddest thing on my smart media card ... I can take a dozen or two pix and go to my PC, place the card in my USB reader and veiw/scan all the pix except occasionally 1 picture. I can look at that pix on the camera view screen but if I attempt to access this file in ANY way - web preview, copy, move (even from a DOS prompt), or even a delete attempt from a higher level folder, etc the entire PC locks and I need to do a button reset on it. Luckily the pix has never been of such a great quality that I can't delete it from the camera. Now I know I can probably move it using the camera as the sending device but waht a pain. Also very strangely, I took pictures off the smart media card and placed them into a folder on the H/D and later wanted to put them back onto the card. The transfer went fine but I was unable to view at least 50% of the files on the camera. I wanted to take the media card to a Walmart and get them printed and perhaps another PC (the Walmart transfer unit) would read the card where the camera wouldn't but this was a concern. I ended up getting them printed via upload to a web site that does digital printing but this sure was a pain. I know about the 'format media' issues and this media card was bought seperately from the camera. Should I just format it again using the camera?

Only my second thread here, so I am learning. But I think I have found some friends and I thank you!

My question, I have a bunch of cds that I made MP3s music backups on a couple years ago on a Compaq P2. I now use a Dell 8300 with XP Pro. I just upgraded to Win Media 10 and am using it now as default player. Anyway I successfully copied some of the old MP3s to my library but only about half of the cds. The other half will WM10 will not read in the drive. The weird thing is, it will play the music and show unamed files, but when I try to copy and move to My music folder, it will come back with something like "disk may be corrupt" or some other reason. It wouldn't read them prior to downloading WP10 either but I didn't try them all before. After upgrading I gave it another attempt and like I said, it did read about half. Disks have been kept in safe storage and are clean and unscratched.
Thanks Bill

I have an HP Envy Phoenix 810-135qe Windows 7 (64-bit) machine. The problem is with my BDDVDRW DVD/CD drive. It was working fine
up until a week ago, now it won't open/play any media. The strange thing is that the drive shows up in Device Manager and says the device
is working properly. It also shows up in diskmgmt.msc as well. I tried uninstalling it in Device Manager and restarted the computer and then
it worked fine. However on the next computer session I had the same problem. I tried the uninstall/restart again and it worked for a second
time. I experienced the same problem on the next computer session, but then any further attempts at uninstall/restart wouldn't get it to work
at all. So having done that, I'm fairly convinced there's a corrupted windows configuration or registry file somewhere. I did check the HP site
to see if there was a new driver available but there was none.

I have a Windows XP Home Edition system and I am trying to import a video from a DVD-R disc into Windows Media Player. I purchased a DVD burner to convert home videos to dvds (using my TV), which works perfectly. In order to play these videos on my XP in Windows Media Player, I have been using a freestanding Memorex DVD recorder that attaches to the computer, as my XP drive does not read DVD-R. This also works just fine. Windows Media Player will read and play my DVD-R discs, but I am unable to get it to actually download/import the videos. I want to be able to download these videos from my DVD-R discs so that they can be stored on my computer and shared with family.

For clarification, when the video is playing in Windows Media Player, the right-hand side of the player lists the video as "Unknown DVD". Clicking on the "Library" tab on the top bar, it again lists the video as "Unknown DVD (F)". Clicking on the "Rip" tab on the top bar, the left-hand side shows "No Disc (D)" and "Unknown Disc (F)", with the message "To begin, insert an audio CD into the CD drive.". The player seems to be perfectly capable of reading and playing my DVD-R videos, but it apparently only recognizes discs in its (D) drive for ripping or importing.

Do I need to purchase more software to be able to do import videos from my DVD-R discs? Should I be using different discs altogether? Any ideas would be greatly, great... Read more

A:Windows Media Player will read but not import from DVD-R

A good program to rip a DVD would be DVD Shrink. They have discontinued the program, but you can still find the latest version by searching for it in google.
