Internal HD power adapter for external use.

Q: Internal HD power adapter for external use.

Years back, being cheaper than external drives I had bought an internal drive as a backup. I also bought an USB to IDE/SATA kit in order to make the backup with. Well the kit seemed to be problematic and so I scrapped it and bought another one only to find the same problem.
it then occurred to me that perhaps the problem is that though the kit has a power supply the HD did not have power going to it--it only attached to the 2 SATA parts.
So I was wondering, how do I get power to it? What is the adapter for such a thing called and does it exist?
See attached photo to see my HD. The pins are not those fat ones but small ones

A: Internal HD power adapter for external use.

The two connectors on the right are power, far right , SATA, center.
The connector you have marked power is not power.

On some drives a connector for jumpers is in that position.

What model drive are you using?

This is for a work computer, that I'm 99% sure someone with monkey hands messed up. Now I'm stuck trying to get it fixed.

When I try connecting to a wifi network, the computer attempts to connect for half a beat, and tells me that windows was unable to connect to the network.

I turned off the firewall, there isnt a virus scanner running, and I updated the internal wifi drivers. I even tried using my external USB wifi adapter.

I was able to tether his cell phone to the computer briefly. As far as I knew, he was able to connect that way. He just told me today that the tethered connection doesn't always work,

So whatever is going on, I assume has something to do with a windows software setting. Any ideas?

I can't do a system restore because there is some proprietary software installed that would take an act of congress to get reinstalled.

I recently bought a mini PCI-e mPCI express Wireless to USB adapter Wireless card (w/SIM) hoping to plug my Atheros AR9285 802.11b/g/n wifi adapter into it so I could make it more portable to get a better signal. Nothing happened prolly because there's no drivers for it.

I know nothing about wireless adapters so Im sure im missing something. I just basically want to turn my internal wifi into external USB and need a help. All i bought was this Mini PCI-e mPCI Express Wireless to USB Adapter Wireless Card With SIM Card Slot - (Someone ive known online for awhile suggested it but i may not even need this)

After doing a little research it seems this works with WWAN which i think is like 3g/4g cell phone stuff. But to reiterate all i want to do is turn my internal Atheros wifi adapter into external be it USB or whatever.

I have two problems so i will explain the scenario then number out the issue. I had a new hard drive installed, when i booted the laptop, it worked well. The wifi in my area is very low so I was told I can use a wireless adpter to "boost" the signal strength received. I was given a Encore ENUWI-N3 Wireless Adapter to use. I installed the utility program from the official website and the computer still did not recognise the device, so I deleted the program. I then lost connection to the internet, and at the time i thought the wifi can dropped (i later realised that was not the case since my phone's wifi was still connected). I then reinstalled the software ( the executible file was saved on the harddrive), and it give me the same message that there are no drivers for the adapter.

I shifted my attention to my failed internet connection, after troubleshooting it give me a error 28 message stating that there were no drivers installed for the Broadcom wireless adapter that is internally installed. I tried a system restore to before i tried installing the Encore adapter, and still nothing, the system continued to give me the same message and it registered in the "device manager" as unknown device named "ethernet controller" with a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark. I have been able to borrow a laptop and download the LAN adapter fron the ACER support website, and although it had no "set up.exe" file visible i was able to get... Read more

The sound works fine until I load a webpage, or load a folder etc and then sound will temporarily switch from my external speakers to my internal laptop speakers. This is quite annoying as it happens frequently and sometimes I blare my externals which can't be good if it keeps switching to my internals.
Can anyone recommend a fix? It would be greatly appreciated.

i'm about to purchase a new hard drive for my computer and i'm trying to decide if i should get a large internal HD (500gb) or if i should get a smaler capacity harddrive 250gb with an external drive. I use my computer mostly for music/video and was thinking of using the external drive to store those exclusively and use the internal drive for the OS, hence the wanting a smaller capacity drive as i can't find a use for a 500gb HD just for an os/ a few programs. I'm not a big gammer at all, but i do enjoy playing simulation games like The Sims 2and Startopia, which don't take up much space either. Currently i have 2x80GB drives, one with vista and my music and the other with videos. Guidance much appreciated.

Hi everyone,

My setup:
Dell running Windows XP SP2 with internal DSL modem, isp is xmission, Linksys WRT110 router.

I get my internet through the internal modem, and I'm able to access the internet on the computer that the modem is installed in, and then I have a network cable going from the box with my modem in it to a wireless router, and I have a good internet connection on all of my local boxes.

Now, I have an external IP address on that computer so I'm able to ssh, ping it, etc... I have tried numerous tutorials and guides on how to go through this computer and get into my local network to access machines in my home remotely from work, the road, etc...

But I think the internal modem gives me some problems, for some weird reason. I don't quite understand how to get through the router. I think what's happening is I have my internet gateway computer in front of the router, and then all the local boxes behind the router, and I can't get past the router.

Could anyone enlighten me as to how I would SSH into, or even PING machines in my local network from a remote location. Many thanks and Merry Christmas!

A:Internal DSL Modem w/ External IP + External Router, how to get into local network?

My interpretation is that you have dial-up internet access and are using ICS? Correct?

If the above is correct does the ICS machine connect to the router's WAN port or a LAN port?

Hello everyone,
I was attempting to repair a computer with a corrupted boot file. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to do this through the computer because of the bios being locked with password that no one knows. The computer was bought from a pawn shop. I think I have come up with an idea that I thought I would try but wanted to see what you fellows thought. I was considering removing the hard drive from the computer then connecting it to my computer. I would remove my hard drive to ensure that my drive wasn't messed with. Then boot by either USB or Disk. What do you guys think? would this be possible?

A:Repairing internal HDD via USB adapter?

Well pulling the bios battery will typically reset the password. However, with newer laptops it's becoming increasingly difficult to bypass the bios or accessing data on the drive. All of this due to the new UEFI bios and TMP chips they have built in. UEFI also protects the system from being boot off a USB stick or CD-ROM. There are some tricks though still to bypass and clearing the bios. There are lots of youtube video's going into that area. I have done it myself a couple times, although each system is different and attempting it has it's risks. A 50/50 chance of completely destroying it. It involves a lot of tearing down the system to locate the small chip and then soldering leads to specific chip pins and then tapping them together as the computer boots, thus basically zapping the bios chip and forcing it to reset. The hard drive however will be a paper weight and must be replaced if it can't be formated. A TMP/encrypted drive cannot be formatted, that's the whole point and in turn protecting the drives integrity. The first thing to do is research the make and model of the laptop and your options on how to recover the laptop's lost bios password/data factory reset.

Hi guys,

I built my own pc a few months ago and the case came with a single USB 3 port on the front but the motherboard I chose doesn't have any USB 3 headers. However it does have two USB 2 headers so I was wondering if I could use the adapter I've linked to at the bottom of the post to get the front USB port to work. I know that if it did work that it would operate at the slower USB 2 speed, not USB 3 but as long as I can use the port at all I'll be ok with it. So will it work? Any response will be welcome.

A:USB 3.0 to USB 2.0 internal header adapter

That wouldn't work mate, the 19-pin connector is to connect to a USB 3.0 header on the motherboard which yours doesn't have. If you need extra USB ports you could pick up a USB 3.0 PCI-e card.

I've been dealing with this issue off and on for a while so I'm hoping somebody knows how to fix this! I have a Lenovo Ideapad Z575. I recently installed a clean copy of Win7 Home premium 64 bit and was able to update all drivers except for the wireless lan one which I downloaded from the Lenovo site. There are no warning/caution symbols in the device manager except for bluetooth.

The problem I have is twofold. First I have been experiencing intermittent connectivity with the wireless connection itself. In some cases it shows no networks available even though I have a phone, other computer, roku, etc that are all connected to the network no problem. Disabling and re-enabling the device through adapter properties will usually "fix" it so that I can connect but it's really annoying. I had disabled the power saving option and that didn't seem to help any.

The more pressing issue now is that I can't even update the driver because I get an error that says "Driver install/uninstall need your Wireless Adapter to be inserted into your PC. Please make sure your Wireless Adapter is in your PC." It's an internal wireless card so I have no idea what the issue is. The available networks icon with the yellow star in the system tray will flash that there is a network available for a few seconds but then it has been changing back to no networks found before I can even connect. The card properties show its a Ralink TEchnology 802.11n wireless card in pci sl... Read more

Quick update -

After searching around online it sounds like this is a common problem with this laptop/wireless card. I'm not the most knowledgable guy about this stuff, but would upgrading the wireless card fix the problem? I'd have to mod the bios too since Lenovo has the black/white list for wireless card but that might be the easiest solution?

I use DELL GXI desktop and I networked 5 systems together yesterday . All installed with WINDOW XP PROFESSIONAL with SP2 . But one of the systems just refused to see the others this morning and I noticed that in the DEVICE MANAGER the modem is marked with yellow (!) sign . Also I noticed that the two networking lights at the back of the system (green and yellow) are both on (instead of only the green as shown in others working). I followed the instruction in the troubleshooter with no success . I reformatted and reloaded the hard disk, I purchased another PCI REALTEK adapter without success. The system refuses to accept the loading of the DRIVERS for the new adapter from diskette instead it continuously configure it with ASOUND 10/100m Based Fast Ethernet Drivers .

I just updated my laptop to Win10 and my bluetooth stopped working. I looked in the Device Manager and there was no bluetooth driver installed, so I thought that I just had to install it. I ran Windows Update to see if it would automatically find and download it for me, it didn't. So then I went to my manufacturer's page and downloaded the driver from there. The installation went fine and it said that it downloaded and installed successfully. After a quick reboot Device manager still said I didn't have any Bluetooth drivers installed. My manufacturer's site had different bluetooth adapters for my laptop so I thought I downloaded the wrong one. After installing the rest of them and rebooting Device manager still said that I had none installed, this leads me to assume that somehow the operating system isn't recognizing that I have any bluetooth hardware at all. So now I'm out of Ideas and thought I'd throw away my pride as a tech-savvy person and ask for help.

I am using a Dell Inspiron 15 (5547 model) running Windows10 (recently upgraded from 8.1)

My desktop computer loses connection regularly and I cannot locate as to why. I have many other devices throughout the house at various locations which maintain a connection fine.

When the connection drops it still displays I am connected, but there is clearly no connectivity.

I've tried toggling between two devices, one an eternal PCI adapter and the other a USB adapter. I get interruptions on both, so my conclusion is there must be a setting causing this.

The desktop has been moved to other locations just in case of interference, and I've tried channel swapping as well.

A:Network interruptions with both internal and usb wifi adapter.

I would suggest choosing a single wifi device and uninstalling any wifi utilities that you have installed, or drivers for any other wifi device (including disconnecting them). Then follow this tutorial to see if it helps at all with the single wifi device you have installed (created by Dinesh): Internet Troubleshooting Guide

Has anyone discovered a fix for the speed issues with Dell Laptops (I.E. Inspiron 17 5759) using the AC3160 internal wireless adpater?
At 2.4Ghz max is 75 mpbs and at 5.0 Ghz max is 150 mpbs.
Using another Dell Laptop (Latitude D620) with the same Linksys/Cisco Router we get double these speeds consistently. At 2.4 ghz max is 150 mpbs and at 5.0 Ghz is 300 mbps. Double that of the AC-3160.
Both laptops are the same distance from the router.
Have upgraded to the latest Dell supplied drivers for the AC3160 and changed properties of the wireless adapter driver but no change to the speeds.
If this issue has not been or cannot be fixed then can someone recommend a Wireless dual band USB 3.0 adapter than we can plug into a USB port on this Inspiron Laptop so we can get faster speeds?

Hi Roxanne

Hi Roxanne,

Welcome to the forum.

Some laptops have a switch near to the keyboard so that you can switch it on or off

You could take the old network card out of the laptop,

You could also go to Device Manager Right click on your Network adapter and select disable.

I hope this helps

I've got an older laptop with an internal Ethernet 10/100 NIC card and a 2.4g wireless adapter.
I now have an ISP Internet package that provides up to 250mb download speeds. However I can never get over 100mb as it seems both my internal wired and wireless max out at 100mb.

If I purchase a usb wireless ac adapter that can handle download speeds of 300mb @ 2.4g and & 800+mb @5g will:
1) I get the speeds I'm paying for (up to 250mb download) or
2) the fact my PC's internal NIC (network interface card) max is 100mb that's all I can expect?

In other words, does a usb wireless ac dual band adapter work independent of all other network devices on one's PC to provide the best Internet speed or is the speed still throttled by one's PC internal NIC card limitations.

The tips I got with this Kensington 33197 power adapter have numbers stenciled on them like N3, N5, N19, etc. The tips sold on their web site make no mention of the "N" numbers and have numbers like K20059, K20050, etc. and there is no cross reference.

You can also see a complete reference for "N" numbers to all the laptops they support at the above link. Again, no mention of the numbers Kensington uses on their site.

I need a cross reference for these kinds of numbers.

Kensington referred me to their telephone tech support; but, there is a language or cultural barrier that prevents their understanding what I need.

I have an Acer Aspire One Nav 50 with windows 7 starter 32 bit. I recently did something stupid and ended up having to completely re-install windows.

The Wireless works sometimes but it usually is not working. It basically seems like it is turned off, it shows that there are no networks available even though there are. I have used Device Manager to update the drivers a few times. I also deleted the drivers and let them re-install like that. It is an Atheros AR5B93.

The internal SD card doesn't work at all. When i put a card in nothing happens and it doesn't show up in "Computer". But When i have a card in it and go to device manager it shows up under "Other Device" (something like that) and the number UB6250. I've tried updating the drivers for every USB Device that shows up in device manager.

Everything works ok except the wireless and the internal SD reader. I had no problems with them before the reinstall of windows. The normal USB ports work fine. Windows is at SP1.

thanks for any help

Then I tried pressing the combination of fn + f12, finally the adapter came to alive. And I could successfully connect to the

It's likely dying, so I want to hook it up to my new laptop to first use YCopy to back up the most important files, and then attempt to use Ez Gig II to make an image of the drive if possible.

However, I purchased Apricorn's Universal Hard Drive Adapter and the HDD linked above does NOT fit into any of the 3 adapter slots.

Here's an image of what the pins look like.
-if that doesn't work, here it is rehosted-

If necessary, I'll just return this and use Clonezilla to clone the drive with whatever cables I buy. What do I need to hook up this HDD to my new laptop via USB? Thanks!

My wireless link stopped working. I have done the following: reset my modem and wireless router, and updated the wireless network adapter driver. The wireless switch is turned on, however, the LED is usually blue when it was working. Now it is amber - same color as the off position.

Is my internal adaptor fried or is there something I can do?

I have in my old computer an internal USB Memory Card reader (reads like 8 formats). It's connected to one of the internal USB controllers. My newer system is pretty similar, but I don't want to have to disable (unplug) external ports like I had to before. My thought was to take a USB cable and cut it. Take the internal; USB card reader, and cut the wires, then splice them to the cord, making the internal card reader external (and portable!)....In my mind this makes sense and should work. Is there anything that would prevent this from working?

I am assuming that when I cut the USB cable, there that the four wires are color coded with the standard colors...

A:Internal -> External USB mod?

Well, I don't know about standard colors, but you can find the pinout of a USB connector easy enough and use an ohmmeter to check which are which.

I was wondering, because i believe that ALL external hard drives have an internal in them with a board/adapter to use usb. But i am wondering, is the hard drives in them are exactly the same as a internal without the adapter? Meaning, if i shell out the external and i get the hard drive in it, is it the same as buying an internal with the same size of the hard drive? I am asking because i can get a 120gb for like $30 at walmart and i can shell out the case and use the actual hdd inside and use it for my xbox 360 slim 4gb.

Greetings all,

Recently my 500GB external HDD stopped working. the power supply in the case stopped working.I took it out of the case and I've now got it hooked up via SATA as an internal HDD. Working fine but I keep getting SMART errors and warnings that the HDD is about to collapse.

At the moment of writing this I'm copying averything to another external HDD to save my data, so I can't give you the manufacturer name at the moment.
in properties I do get that it is an ST3500830AS ATA Device

Is there some BIOS setting I'm after forgetting, or maybe caused by going from USB external to SATA internal, or should I be really worried about this harddisk?

My pc info will give you any other HW info you may need, or else just ask!

Thanks for any help that can be provided.

Im running out of room on my internal hard drive and was thinking about getting a 1tb external hd

A few questions...first of all I know that usb might be too slow to play some games, so installing games on the external is a no no then?

What if i just got an internal HD and used an adapter? usb to sata, would that be faster than just using an external hard drive?

I want the fastest storage possible and really would like to run games and videos off it.

by the way I was looking at this my book essential by Western digital

A:Internal vs external HD- Which should i get?

Installing them to an external is not a big no, but newer games are going to be totally unplayable. You could, however, get an E-SATA connected hard drive.

SATA to USB is not any faster than using external drives. They are, all in all, just normal hard drives planted inside an enclosure at the factory. Nothing else.

Do you have any reason to get an external? If you just want to have fast storage and run games and watch videos, why not get another external drive? If you want to carry the videos to your friend's place, etc, then yeah, external drive is a decent option.

Aaanyways. If you need an external, then get something like Seagate Freeagent Desk Extreme or Western Digital My Book Home (only model with esata and decent price(recheck this yourself, I'm not 150% sure)).

If you don't need an external, get a Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 or Western Digital Caviar Black/Blue.
Aaalso, of course the eSata is no good if you don't have a plug for it. You'll then need to buy an add-on card to handle that... Also the drives don't come with an eSata cable. You can use the USB for watching movies, but games, and copying lots of files are recommended to be done thru eSata.

About a year ago I started using an external HDD (Seagate FA GoFlex Desk 1 TB) to store all my files, i.e. documents, videos, music, etc. So whenever I'm listening to music or watching videos, which I'm doing practically all the time, the external HDD is in use. I'm basically using it just like I would use an internal HDD. The only stuff I still save permanently on my internal 500 GB HDD are the OSes (Win 7 and Kubuntu 11.10 dual-boot) and installed software.

Now my question is how bad this actually is for an external HDD in terms of (drastically?) reducing its lifespan? I'm asking because I keep reading that external HDDs aren't really suited for this and are primarily designed for plugging it in once a week or so and doing backups.

I'm no professional, so this may not be the most correct answer. Be warned.

It sounds like it should work fine. I would aassume that since it's not originally an internal HDD, you may not be able to mount it. As long as nothing is scratched or jolted around as the HDD runs, meaning there's no damage, I would assume that the files would be just fine.

While reading
How to Create a Portable OS on an External Drive published by Whs, I found the point below marked in red brought my attention:::

For obvious reasons, the SSD works the best. Operations on the HDD will be slower. I have also tried a fast USB3 stick. But that was too slow. See performance section for details.

I found a $55 'value pack' -a SSD and a USB3 enclosure including cable. The 30GB SSD is large enough to accommodate Windows 8 or any Linux distro with room to spare.

My questions are:
Firstly: Which is the better the an External SSD or internal SSD?

Secondly: Is any brand USB3 SSD with a size of 30GB or 120GB really enough?
These SSDs were suggested for me:

$199.99 (3yr, 480GB TLC): SanDisk Ultra II
$199.99 (3yr, 512GB MLC): Crucial MX100
$212.99 (5yr, 500GB TLC): Samsung 850 EVO
$229.98 (3yr, 500GB TLC): Samsung 840 EVO
$259.99 (10yr, 480GB MLC): SanDisk Extreme Pro
$289.99 (5yr, 480GB MLC): Intel 730 Series
$289.99 (10yr, 512GB MLC): Samsung 850 Pro
$373.36 (10yr, 512GB MLC): Samsung 840 Pro

hi how can i make a backup/ system image for my internal and external hard drives at the same time? thanks

A:backup internal/external

First you will need often a larger drive then you have for the OS and other drives internal as well as external. If you have one 500gb OS host drive, a second 500gb internal, and then two 500gb external drives you would likely need a 2tb drive to cover the size of any image created.

The program to handle this would like be Acronis True Image as one of the best paid for programs or one that will include multiple drives into one main image backup. Others like Paragon, Macrium's Reflect, the older Norton Ghost are some of the more popular programs.

With a few those either have free versions as well as paid for or like Paragon offer a free version. Paragon is a free open source program there. Also drive manufacturers like Western Digital will offer a free version of Acronis TI. Seagate also offers the rebranded Disk Wizard(Acronis under a different name) free as well for their customers.

A:Can I sub an external HD for a failed Internal?

You can't just swap the drives. First, you will need to ensure the drive inside the external case is the same type (ie: IDE or SATA). Second, assuming it's the right type, you can use the disk tools from the HDD manufacturer (manufacturer of the actual HDD inside the enclosure, NOT Iomega) to clone your current drive onto the new drive.

Does an external HDD have any benefits over an extra internal HDD for backing up data?

I think if the truth be known that an internal HDD providing it's not a partition of the primary HDD would be the best but is this correct?

I was thinking about having as well as my 500GB HDD that has a partition which is also being used for automatic back ups another 80GB HDD for just copying and pasting the folders I want to back up, but using Bitlocker to protect. As well as that I was going to buy another 500GB HDD which will be used for automatic back ups as well.

So in total I have 2 locations on 2 separate drives for Norton Ghost to use for automatic back ups and an other separate HDD for just copying folders to which has been encrypted using BitLocker.

Will this be alright or should I add either another internal HDD or an external HDD?

A:External Vs Internal HDD for back up?

Well, I've always recommended external HDDs, so that the data will still be protected in the event that heat or motherboard issues mess up more than one internal HDD.

I use bluehost as my mail and website host.

1- Do I need to create DNS Forwards on the server?
2- If so what ip addresses do I use and where exactly do I need to place it?
3- Do I need to reload the server with a different local domain name thank the external?
4- Can I change the Domain Name without a reload?

I would like to be able to place all my computers on the network on the domain and still have access to email. Is this possible and if so how? Thanks for all your help! It is much appreciated...

A:Internal and External DNS Name Conflicts

1. Yes, as your websites are hosted externally you will need to setup forward and reverse lookups from your domain.

2. Not sure I understand the question? Place what where? The IP addresses you use will depend on the IP addresses already in use for your website.

3. As long as the domain name is registered to yourself/business this shouldn't be necessary but if your website is hosted by an external company you need to make sure the DNS records on the internet are correct. i.e. 'A' record for website points to website, 'MX' record points to your mail servers etc

4. No. Well as far as I'm aware on any windows machine, changing the domain name requires a reboot.

You need the Microphone mode. The microphone mode provides 5VDC on the "ring" connection, which is required by a "computer" microphone. If you use or set the jack mode to "Line" the "ring" connector will change from 5VDC to a signal in connection and a "computer" microphone will not work.

its kinda complicating and its really frustrating for me..

if you guys could help me that would be great

I have a failing seagate 3TB HDD (am getting cycle redundancy errors) I would like to put in the PC as an internal WITHOUT losing any files. How would I go about that, as when I have done it before it has asked me to format drive.

Ending up fixing it, it got to 73% on chkdsk with a errors and stopped but I then did a /f and it fixed the problem.

A:Make an External HDD to Internal HDD

That drive does not sound good. I would not trust it.

I installed Windows 7 on my ASUS EEE PC 701. It runs great, but the only problem is space on the hard drive. The internal hard drive only has 4GB, and about 3.20GB of it was used to install Windows 7. I'd like to install programs like iTunes and Adobe Audition but one of those alone would probably exceed the amount of space I have left.

However, I do have an Western Digital 320GB external harddrive. How do I make it so I can switch between using the internal hard drive and the external one as the main storage for installing programs and such? I know its possible because I've seen many people ask about it, but nobody ever completely shows how to do it. They just vaguely explain how it works...I'd really appreciate detailed instructions.

Thanks in advance!

A:Can I use both internal HD and external HD as main?

I'm not sure how you'd go about it without problems. You would always have to have the external HD attached for Windows to work, at which point you're better off getting something suitable for that use from the beginning, i.e. a desktop PC, or a regular notebook with a proper HD. You can't just arbitrarily be switching from Programs residing in the Eee PC's internal drive and an external drive.

My 2 cents .

Considering the price hike of External HD over Internal ones (when your working with a tight budget!) is it possible to use an Internal HD as an External one?

What would be my connectivity problems?
What are my compatability considerations?
Is it possible even?

I have an old Pc; I was thinking of connecting it's internal HD to my notebook.
Though I would consider buying a new Internal HD if it is possible and eleviate compatability problems.

Thank you for any help you may have.

My daughter's desktop computer won't start up at all. When she hits the button, nothing happens. She needs to know if there is any way to connect a desktop's internal HD to her laptop as an external HD temporarily so she can get her banking records off of it. No backups, of course.

If not, shouldn't she be able to install it as slave into another computer and boot up and retrieve the files?

Thanks for any suggestions

A:Internal HD connect as in external

You can get an external enclosure, put the drive in there and then connect it to the laptop with a USB cable. Find out if it's an IDE or SATA drive. Here's an example of an IDE enclosure and a SATA enclosure There are also a few that will handle both IDE and SATA.

She could also put it in another desktop (one that will hold more than one hard drive) as a slave drive.

If she gets an access denied error, take ownership of the files or folders

I got a external dvd writer a couple of years ago, Its made by lacie but the actual sticker on the drive is lite-on it corp. The model number is SOHW-812S.

The drive is firewire and i have a firewire pci adapter in my pc. However after the drive bay refused to open, and a failed attempt at a repair in windows, and the same problem after a reboot, i think its dead. Im not sure if its the drive or the pci card and i dont have any friends with firewire to try out my drive.

I stripped the case off the external drive and was left with what looks like a perfectly normal internal drive. Or is it? can i just plug this in to my ide cable and see if is working to eliminate the drive or card dilemma?

Thanks in advance

A:Reuse external as internal?

Yup, you can. Just make sure you set the jumper correctly.

Hi there! I hope I'm in the right forum.
Here's my issue.

We're running Windows 2003 R2 using native Windows DNS

I need to create a DNS entry that will allow our internal users to connect to an external IP. There is no FQDN, just an IP.

I tried a CNAME entry but it would not resolve, I also tried an A record but again it would not work.

I can access the external site by plugging in the IP into a browser but for our users here that will not cut it. They need a user friendly name they can remember that resolves to the external IP

Any help?

I'm currently in the market to purchase a DVD burner. I've got a desktop PC running Windows XP, 1.7Mhz processor, 512 ram, etc. So, it's pretty good, but not the newest. I also plan to purchase a laptop in the near future.

Any recommendations on whether I should save about $100 and get an internal drive or should I get an external that I can use on both PC's?

Also, any ideas how much slower it will take to burn a DVD, since I will be sending the information via FireWire rather than a direct cable inside the computer.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Also if you have any recommendations on burners, I'm open to ideas. Right now I'm looking pretty strongly at the TDK burners.

I have an external Western Digital External HDD (500GB) and it is always connected to my PC. When I start the computer up the BIOS tells me that it cannot find a bootable device. I checked the BIOS priority with the EHDD connected and that was put at a higher priority than the internall HDD. Now, the problem is, the Internal HDD was not displayed in the boot priority and was not in the boot list, therefore I could not put it at a higher priority than the EHDD.

Starting the computer with the externall HDD works fine, it's just that it's a pain having to disconnect and connect it all the time.

A:External HDD Booting before Internal HDD

Not to sure how you are managing to boot if your boot drive is not in the boot priority list
When you have the external connected where is the machine booting from?

Hey people,

So here's my issue, recently took out my laptop HDD and formatted it, NTFS format, and stored stuff on it. Now when I place that in an enclosure and want to use it as an external HDD drive, it doesnt pick up the device.

Through Diskpart I am able to give the drive a letter and access it, but when I "Safely" remove device, the Drive letters remain....

1St problem, Do I need to do anything special to make the Device a Plug and Play ?
2nd Question, am currently consulting google on the matter, HOW do I remove the Drive Letters that I assigned through Diskpart from "My Computer"

A:Make Internal HDD to External

Diskpart isn't the easiest way to do so, and I hope that didn't do anything to the drive. The easiest is to assign the drive a letter in Disk Management. But, to back up a bit, is it recognized in Disk Management, first.

I am accustomed to solving my own problems. Honestly, but this one has been biting me in the butt. I didn't have problems like this until I reinstalled a fresh copy of Windows Media Center onto my computer. (Only because it came with it, I prefer XP Pro).

My problem mainly is this. My internal DVD-Rom reads and writes, but it does it slowly, or atleast I assume so. It still does it at about 20x but it slows my entire PC down. WinAmp stops playing songs almost completely because I am READING a DvD. Playing games like Battlefield 2142 becomes a headache because occasionally when information is required from the DVD my computer would freeze then die. I avoided the internal DVD-ROM by using my external, but after the fresh installation my external never was recognized. It is only known as an "Unknown USB Device"

Just realized this includes my internal CD-ROM. It slows my PC by shooting up the CPU Usage. When using Task Manager I ran a cd in my CD-ROM. It goes from 0% and 10% to about 80% then back down. When I actually play or use the cd, then it stays at about 80% or even 100%. I really dont get it. Maybe old drivers? Any idea guys?

If you need more information just reply to this thread asking for it, I'll update ASAP. Thanks again

i am pretty sure my original hard drive is on it's last leg as it clicks often and when i try to reboot windows xp i have a difficult time. right now the clicking has subsided. i have an external hard drive (F) that can accept all the data from the original (c). i tried copying and had no luck. any help will be appreciated. oh no !! i think i hear it clicking. LOL thanks, hchackenbush

A:internal hd data to external hd

Clicking is not a good sign . . What files did you try to copy? . . how did you try to copy the files?

You may have better luck attaching your current drive to a working pc to salvage files you cherish
