You would do well to follow the instructions for it sounds like you have a HD on the verge of failing.

Probably just co-incidental that you just did a clean install.

After you back up run a chkdsk to check the HD status.

A- CHKDSK /R /F:

Quote:
Run CHKDSK /R /F from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt.

Do this for each hard drive on your system.

When it tells you it can't do it right now - and asks you if you'd like to do it at the next reboot - answer Y (for Yes) and press Enter.

Then reboot and let the test run.

It may take a while for it to run, but keep an occasional eye on it to see if it generates any errors.

See "CHKDSK LogFile" below in order to check the results of the test.

B- Elevated Command Prompt:

Quote:
Go to Start and type in "cmd.exe" (without the quotes)

At the top of the Search Box, right click on Cmd.exe and select "Run as administrator"

C-CHKDSK LogFile:

Quote:
Go to Start and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and... Read more

I just began getting this error yesterday. What is the likelihood that another issue besides a failing hard drive is causing error? Secondly, I've already purchased a new hard drive as a precaution. What is the fastest/easiest way to backup/clone this drive?

A:"Windows detected a hard disk problem" error message

Hello,

Please open an elevated command prompt.
When you have the command promt open please enter the following command:
sfc /scannow and press enter.
After the scan is 100% and the scan did repair files please restart your computer.

Please re-open an elevated command prompt and enter the following command:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

The cbs.log file will be posted on the Desktop as the current user, named sfcdetails.txt. Please attach this file in your next post.

Note: You can also copy/paste the commands to make it easier.

I recently burned a couple of CDS (filled with videos and mp3s) and MADE SURE that they worked properly and were burned correctly BEFORE I deleted the videos and mp3s from my computer. Well, I burned about 5 cds. I was checking over some of the CDs and 2 of the burned CDs dont want to work. I get the following error:

"Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with Windows"
Why am I gettin this? Im POSITIVE that the disk was burned correctly but now all of a sudden Im gettin this error. I got Windows XP SP2, Gateway Computer.

First of all, i just want to let everyone know that i am not very good with computers so, please bare with me.

Here is my problem, my wife was trying to download pics from her memory card of her camera (sd card) to my computer so that she could burn the pics to a cd. My computer (Gateway GT5016H) has a slot to insert the memory card into the tower of the computer. She inserted the card, retrieved the pics and proceeded to burn them to a cd. When she was done, she shut down the computer.
Now evertime i start the compuer i get an error message pop up "windows-no disk" "there is no disk in drive. Please insert disk into drive." I also must click cancel multiple time to get rid of the error message. Gateway tech's could not help resolve the problem and told me to contact the manufacture of the sd card because they believe there is a compatability issue. I have windows XP if you need to know.

Can anyone help me.

I get this error message whenever I try to run iTunes or load a music CD. I cannot get it to disappear, and end up having to reboot. I have run A-Spyware & A-V software, and have cleaned my register.

I saw a solution to this in forum threads, which referred to using "Hijack This". But the solution required someone else to look at my log file, and then suggest specific actions.

Can anyone help me through this please?

Many thanks.

Hello,
I'm trying to install Windows 7 64bit to HP dc7800 Ultra slim desktop PC from USB flash drive (since PC hasn't got CD/DVD drive). At the partition selection step I get message "Windows cannot copy files to this disk".
I've already googled a lot and read this forum topics, but still can't overcome this issue.

I've tried the following:
format HDD and create partition table with DISKPART via win7 disk command promt,
format HDD and create partition table with GParted (creating to primary patition: ~50 GB NTFS '"WIN7" and ~100 GB NTFS "DATA",
wipe all data from HDD writing random data,
create bootable USB flash with different tools (Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool, Novicorp WinToFlash),
memtest86+ both operating memory modules (2 x 2GB) for 6 passes,
leave only one module connected to motherboard (with each),
reset CMOS setting in 3 ways (via BIOS, removing power cable and CMOS battery, pushing CLR_CMOS button on motherboard),
set HDD as the first boot device
but nothing helped.

I've searched in BIOS for different HDD emulation modes (AHCI, IDE), but the only present setting present:
Storage -> Device Configuration -> Hard Disk (SATA0):
Emulation type: Hard Disk, None,
Multisector Transfers: 8, 16, Disabled,
Translation Mode: Off, Automatic, Bit Shift, LBA Assisted, User.

What can I do? Your help is appreciated.

UPD:
Tried removing USB flash key and refresh the partition list in partition selection menu. Didn't help.

A:Windows Startup "No Disk" Message

I don't see the "usual suspects" there, but I would suspect IPOD or Itunes, or perhaps "disk keeper"

Anyway, try doing a "clean boot" to see if it happens:

Run msconfig and select the "Services" tab. Check "Hide Microsoft Services" and then disable the rest. Also uncheck "load startup group" on the general page.

See this link for detailed information:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;310353

Now restart and test the issue at hand

If no problems, run msconfig and recheck half the disabled items on the Services tab. Test again. If the problem recurs, UNcheck half the items you just checked to narrow down the culprit.

If the problem didn't occur, check the other half, so all the Services are enabled -- proceed to do this on the startup tab as well.

Get the idea? You want to isolate the problem to a specific startup if possible.

Note: if you already have items unchecked under msconfig > startups and are in “selective” startup mode – you should note what these are before beginning. They will need to be de-selected again.

Hi.

I am using Windows XP SP2. I just uninstalled Norton AntiVirus 2004. The uninstall would not complete, so I downloaded and ran the SymNRT program (from Symantec) to remove the program. All went well. The program advised that all Norton products had been successfully removed. Upon reboot, after I click my icon on the XP "Welcome" screen and type in my password, windows loads the desktop as normal. A few seconds later howeverm I get the following message:
"Windows - no disk Please insert disk in drive"
Clicking 'cancel' removes the message and everything appears to be fine. I did a bit of research and have already tried the following to no avail:

Clearing recent files list from QuickTime
Starting the PC in Safe Mode to see if the error comes up (it does).
Disabling SpySweeper from running at startup
Disabling ZoneAlarm from running at startup

I still get the error. I since have re-enabled ZoneAlarm and SpySweeper. I have also installed NOD32 AntiVirus. The error remains constant. It happens each time I reboot.

I notice that the log file below refers to L:\Adobe\Photoshop Elements in a couple of spots. I recently did something that caused drive letters to change. I used Drive Mapper in Partition Magic to help fix any problems and all appears to be well. My old "L:" is now "G:". I'm not sure if this is relevant, because this happened a few weeks ago and the error I'm posting about only started today. I did figure... Read more

A:"Windows - No disk" message at startup

This doesn't look copacetic since no file is listed, I'd check and "fix" it:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Subst] subst C: F:\

Other than that the scanlog is ok.

When did this problem begin? If recent, you might just want to try a System Restore.

The problem is occasionally due to the system trying to access some removable media which has no disk in the drive, such as a zip drive.

It can also be due to drive letters being assigned to drives that no longer exist. What exactly is on your "c:" drive?

Ok, I built a PC a month ago and everything seemed find no problems of any sort. The other night I defragmented my hard drive and shut it down and turned it on today to a memory test and the message "Disk Boot Failure, Insert system Disk and press enter"

The computer has access to the XP pro w/ sp2 disk only as a boot device but it will not recognize it now.

I have set Cd-rom as 1st for boot sequence then hard drive I have no floppy drive and the bios has been configured to know that.

I am not sure if this means anything but in the bios the IDE Channel 0 Master says none and when I try to turn on auto detection it wont detect a hard drive.

The HDD is fully connected and has not been touched since I installed it a month ago.

I have this awful feeling that I fried the HDD when I defragmented it last night.

Any help would be very much appreciated. But please be simple this is my first build and my knowledge at this sort of thing is very very sketchy at best.

Hi,

I have started receiving this message every time WinXP tries to install updates:

"Windows - No Disk Exception Processing Message c0000013 Parameters 75b6bf7c 75b6bf7c 75b6bf7c"

I believe it may have to do with my recently removing a hard drive to use in another system (without having disabled it in Device Manager first), but I don't know how to get rid of it. It is interrupting the update installation and not allowing it to complete.

Any advice will be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks,
Sam

Hi all,

Sorry to repeat a question I see a lot of instances of, but none of those seem to be addressing my problem correctly.

I have not done anything new to my computer in recent days, so this problem has caught me off guard (I see most instances of this problem come after upgrading to Windows 7, I have had Win 7 installed for a while now).

Here is a summary of my problem:
1) My computer recently got stuck on the "Starting Windows Screen." So I manually held the power button to reboot.
2) On reboot, it said there was a need to run a startup repair, which I did. Everything checked fine, except for the last one which said "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted," which it claimed to have successfully fixed.
3) After rebooting from repair, the system gets stuck on "Starting Windows Screen" for a good 10-15 minutes, after which it runs a registry check. After it completes that I get hopeful -- but the screen then gets stuck on an all black screen with just the mouse cursor and nothing more.
4) Additional note: Attempting to start the computer on "safe mode" leads safe mode startup to become stalled on "DRIVERS\CLASSPNP.SYS"
5) The lastest attempt to repair yielded this message: "Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

A:Stuck on "Starting Windows", Repair Shows "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted"

Hi Stan, Hopefully I can help you out....or at least lead you in the right direction. From my experience, the symptoms you are suggesting sound like perhaps a dying Hard drive.

1. Do you have the windows 7 boot disks that came with your computer or when you bought the Operating System? If so, you could try and insert one of those and boot from it, and attempt to repair the installation. (this won't affect your data, only the windows system files).

2. If that doesn't fix it, you could try a fresh reinstall of windows 7, and see if that works.

3. If neither of those work, its likely that because of the fact that when windows is repairing itself, it is generally putting copies of its system files in the same physical location on your disk. Because your disk is obviously not completely dead, ie....its still loading to the windows 7 startup screen, its just copying files to the bad sectors on your hard drive and gets stuck when loading. This is especially my guess because you said Safe mode is having same problems, even after attempting to repair. In the past, I've tried and salvage a disk by reformatting it and only leaving on partitions which do not contain the bad clusters. This takes some time, and some guess work.....and really this is only a "bandaid" fix because once the disk has bad clusters, its only a matter of time before these things give out. You wouldn't want to trust your important data on it anyways....

I hope this leads you in ... Read more

hello, let's just get to the point, i had this problem recently where my pc can load windows, it keep looping
pc's on - booting - then "Windows Loading Files" - restart
it's infinite i don't know what to do, i don't have a cd rom, and i can't reinstall my windows from USB because every time i tried it says : "disk error" or "disk read error"
even after i burn it to USB correctly, tried this on other pc and USB can load just fine.
i'm thinking, it's something wrong with my boot system in System Reserved, is there anyway i can do to fix this?

Have you tried changing the boot sequence inside the BIOS?

Recently my Hard Disc failed (30GB). It would rattle for a couple of minutes on boot up, then say: "Boot Faliure: System Halted"

I went out and got a new disc (120GB), I installed Win XP pro but I periodically got the same error. But this time it would say "Boot Faliure: System Halted" after only a few seconds, like it just couldn't see the disc at all. Where with the last disc it seemed to see it, but the disc was faulty.

I reinstalled windows a few times but still got the same error. Now my computer is working but only works if I go into the BIOS when I boot up. It seems to boot up if I select "save settings and exit". Also it seems to work if there is a CD in the drive. (It was not a bootable CD)

Do I need to update the BIOS? (That sounds scary.) Or is the the new disc just naff?

Would be glad of help

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I decided to "reinstall" Windows XP on my laptop. (everything was getting so slow and I thought a reinstall was my best bet to speed things ups). I stuck the reinstall disk into the computer and let it go. After about 1 hour of "reinstalling", the computer restarted, after that, the window was only one half the size and I couldn't change the monitor resolution size. (but, it showed the old desktop information so I knew right away that I hadn't actually reinstalled to the original state, but just reinstalled over the current desktop). So, I restarted the computer to see if the window screen would enlarge to the full size..

It did return to the full screen size, but Now, it freezes at the part of startup where the screen says "Windows is starting up".
I left it on for 20 minutes and it was still frozen.

SHould I insert the Windows XP disk again, to start over or what? Or click reboot after hitting the F2 button??

I'm really stuck now

This is the third time I got the same blue screen, and the next thing I know is that my dell inspiron 6000 can not boot anymore. It tells me that "no boot sector on internal hard drive".

After the last incident (which was a night ago), I reformatted (complete reformat, not the quick format) my harddrive. I also created 3 partitions (Drives C, D and E). I reinstall windows XP. I regularly backup my data so that complete reinstallation is not an issue. Now, just a night after I reinstalled everything. The blue screen shows up again and the next thing is "no boot sector on internal hard drive"

I tried to repair and type in chkdsk /f, fixmbr, fixboot. Those commands do not work. When I used my reinstallation CD (I did not actually install the windows) and went to a point I can see my harddrive, I realize all my drives C, D and E are gone. All I see is one big harddrive, needing to be formatted again.

Previously, I created a boot cd. I used that. After I went in, I cannot detect any of my drives C, D and E. I ran an extended dell diagnostic test and it found not problem with my harddrive.

I know if I reinstall the windows, it will work for a while. I had the same problem 1&1/2 years ago, I completely reinstalled my windows at that time. It lasted 1&1/2 years. This time, after reinstallation, it only lasted one night.

Any idea? Is this still possible a virus problem? Or my harddrive is bad?

A:"No Boot Sector" after just reinstalled windows recently

It is time for you to get another hard drive or two. I would advise instead of spliting up a single hard drive into 3 sections, use another drive for backing up important stuff. If that mutiple partitioned hard drive fails, like yours has, you loose everything

I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64

The other day I was afk while listening to loud music from my computer.
Suddenly the speakers began screaming in a high pitch and when I got to my computer it had frozen.
I tried to reboot it, but it simply froze at the Windows loading screen with the floating balls of light and the text: "Starting Windows".
I have also tried booting from the Windows 7 Installation DVD, but it freezes at the loading screen once again.

I then tried to use the Startup Repair Tool, only to find Windows freezing at the loading screen again.

When trying to reboot in safe mode, it freezes again, just after having loaded "disk.sys"

These are the things I have tried so far:
- I have run memory tests using Memtest86.
- I have run hard disk drive tests using SeaTools
- No errors were found.
- I removed the sound card from the MB, with same boot result.
*EDIT*
- I have reset the BIOS
- I booted with 2GB of RAM instead of my standard 4GB

Anyone who can think of other things I should try?

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

Hi,

Recently, an error message "Windows detected a hard disk problem" always pop ups in my monitor.

I have done "Error Checking" also " Defragmentation"...but that error message doesn't disappear.

What should I do?

Thanks a Lot.

A:Error message " Widows detected a hard disk problem"

That is not a most welcome message.

I would immediately backup the most important personal data and run the DOS version of Manufacturer's Diagnostic Utility. If it passes without any event reported, fine. But if it finds bad sectors and even if it repairs it, be wary. Not to be taken aback by any catastrophic failure that may occur unannounced, always backup all your personal data and also image your system regularly.

I know this question has been asked before as I've read about it all over the Internet. In order to get rid of the 'Low Disk Space' message it says to go to the registry and locate HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer, type a new value, etc. The only problem is I don't have an Explorer key. It ends at Policies.

I've tried everything. I've tried creating the key myself, and I've tried inserting the value into the policies folder. Nothing has worked. Can anyone help?

Hi there!
First of all thanks for the great toturial and the forum.

I tried to do the in-place upgrade from Windows 10 (build 1607) in order to "repair" my system (there are some quirks I want to get rid off) using a freshly created USB (as per description), but it fails with the message "make sure that there is enough disk space available in your PC" (rough translation from german; see attached screenshot) without any further information.

It then automatically cycles back to the question on how to install (i.e. with keeping data and apps or without) and then back into the above mentioned error message.

This is what I already tried or made sure of prerequisites needed:
I have made sure that there is definitely enough disk space available. My C: partition (where windows resides on) is 106 GB large and has currently over 58 GB of free space available. The system partition that is supposed to be 350 MB is still 350 MB (I read something about this potentially being reduced to 100 MB by other tools ...).I have deinstalled the Kaspersky anti virus tool (reinstalled it now after several tries with no success).I have disabled (i.e. fully decrypted) the disk encryption bitlocker on all disks.

Do you have any ideas on what else could be wrong?

Sometimes when I run vista i get a message say something like this: "Disk E:/ is corrupt, run chkdsk on the drive to resolve issues" After a reboot the chkdsk utily runs before it opens vista and fixes any issues, but i get the same problem a few days later.

Any Ideas?

A:constant message "Disk E:/ is corrupt, run chkdsk on the drive to resolve issues"

I'd be testing both the RAM and the hard drive. Vista is really good at stressing out a system and may show issues when XP was fine, as was the case with XP versus 98.

To test the memory I'd use: http://www.memtest.org/

Then find out what brand of hard drive you have, probably will show you in Device Manager, and use the manufacturer's diagnostics to test it.

Another cause could be the drivers for the motherboard. Have you installed any chipset drivers? What motherboard do you have?

Yesterday when I switch on my computer, it automatic diskcheck on my E disk. I have 3 HDD, which is C: (My main partition, installed Windows on this HDD), D: is for all my game files (Installed games) and E: is for all my music, movies, game installer, software etc.

So back to the point, when I switch on my computer, and get to the "Windows is Starting", and it stuck right there for about 5-10 minutes. Firstly, I have no patient so I restated the computer, and second or third time also have the same problem. So I choose to wait patiently, after 5-10 minutes, it have a black screen for about 1 to a few minutes, then it started the disk check on my E drive.

The "File record segment xxx is unreadable" error is an indication of failing hard drive. You should backup the data from this drive before it's too late.

Next, run some diagnostic testing on the failing hard drive; most HDD manufacturers have the diagnostic software available from their website. Software from Seagate will work with most brand.

If this drive would be mine, I'd just get a new one, the drive certainly will not get better...

Hi, I'm having some trouble in the GIMP, especially when opening or saving files. Going to the C: drive goes fine, but when I go to a following directory, I get the "No Disk" error message, telling me to insert a disk into "the" drive. Whichever that may be.

If that were all, it wouldn't have been a great deal. But whichever button I press in the error message, it just pops up again. And again, and again, and again... This is seriously bad for one's nerves. Of course, I tried to click very rapidly, and eventually it does stop, if you're lucky enough not to click once too many. Because chances are you click on the save or load dialog, then the message pops up, and you can start all over again! I tell you, it's only a matter of time before I have a mental breakdown.

I was actually uncertain as of in which forum to post, as I suspect this could be a Windows problem as well. You see, whenever I stick a USB stick into my computer, the drive letter assigned to it isn't the next one unused. Instead, it skips one. So perhaps my computer thinks there's one more drive - one without a disk in it - while there really isn't. That's just an idea though.

I'm using Windows XP SP2, GIMP 2.2.10 and GTK 2.8.9. Both are the latest version, and there is no mention of a "No Disk" message in GIMP's Bugzilla.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, of course!

The problem is I have lots & lots of free space left on my drive( like 120GBs) I use a HP Media center pc, & have contacted their support several times, it always boils down to " do a non-destructive recovery" & then "do a destructive recovery" These both work for a little while & then it all starts over again. I haven't been able to identify any new software, etc. that might be causing the problem. Any ideas out there??

Hi Guys, any ideas how to access my external hard drive [TOSHIBA MK3029GACE] device manager can see it but it does not appear in disc management.

I use this HDD perfectly in my car HDD player. But when I try to connect it to my Laptop, it does not show up in disk management.

Please check the attached screen shot..

Thanks for the help....

A:HDD shows in "Device Manager" but not in "DiskPart"or" Disk Management

Specs show that drive has a ATA-6 interface (P-ATA, or IDE). How are you connecting this drive to your laptop? Does the laptop have a PATA or SATA connection? Does it use an adapter?

This problem is making me crazy:

I am trying to copy some files to a CD Disk, so that I can open them on a different computer. I have put a disk in the drive, highlighted the file, clicked on "send to", and I get the message: "Please insert a disk into Drive E (or F, whichever I happen to try it with)".

The drives won't recognize that there is a blank CD. If I put in an audio CD or a DVD, it recognizes it, and plays it fine. It's just the blank ones that are giving me a problem. I have tried several different brands of CD . . . same result . . . "Please insert a disk into drive".

Does ANYONE have a remedy for this problem, or a suggestion? Any help will be appreciated.

FYI : My computer is a Dell 8300, running Windows XP. My drives are an NEC CD-RW and a Samsung DVD-ROM.

A:Can't Copy to CD . . "No Disk In Drive" Message

Hello.
Stupid question.
Are you putting the blank CD in the NEC device?

Open "my computer".
RIGHT click the NEC drive
Left click "properties"
Left click the "recording" tab.
Is the box "enable recording on this drive" checked?

When did the problem begin?
Can you associate the onset of the problem to the addition or removal of hardware or software, to include an update to Windows or your antivirus program? Have you run a registry cleaner recently? I am NOT suggesting that you run a reg cleaner.

Have you EVER been able to burn files on this computer, using this NEC drive.

Basically, to be successful, you need the correct combination of burner / device, optical disk, software.
Are you using CD - R disks? Which brand & model?

Which optical disk are you using?

Which disk burning software is on your computer? Which disk burning software has EVER been installed on your computer?

How to troubleshoot CD playing problems.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321641
I realize that your problem is burning, but many of the concepts are the same.

My computer persistantly displays this error message saying "Windows - No Disk: There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive." When I look at the My Computer screen It shows my floppy drive, my C drive, the unknown Removable Disk Drive (D:), CD drives E and F, my other internal drive (G:), my external (H:), the second partition on my internal drive (I:), a DVD drive (J:), and then finally the second unknown Removable Disk Drive (K:). I have no idea what these Removable disk drives are or how they got here but I think they are causing the problem. Windows thinks there is a disk mounted but there isnt. If it helps the applications I was using at the time of when the incident first began was Azureus, my DVD drive, Divx Player, iTunes, and maybe some more random stuff. This error message pops up whenever I open multiple programs such as iTunes and Azureus. I could REALLY use some help with this as it is starting to become very annoying!

A:Keep getting error message saying "There is no disk in the drive"

right click on my computer then manage. click on disk management and see what it specifies K:\ as. you can right click and goto properties to get a list of drives attached and maybe it'll give you more specs on this removable drive.

is is possible you installed some software from a removable disk (like a usb key) and the software you are running is looking for the source media? it's possible this new drive has nothing to do with the windows error

I'm getting the Low Disk Space message in Windows XP. Well, DUH...I knew that I was running out of room, so I bought an external hard drive with more space than I'll ever fill. Like an idiot...when I got the external.....I just went to folders...sometimes programs and used "send to" the now G: drive. Yes, I know, that was STUPID! Many of the same files are duplicated, etc so that they were copied and sent....not actually MOVED. Some of my programs don't even work correctly anymore.

I know that I can do a system restore....but I'm almost afraid that it might crash my pc. What is the easiest way to fix this problem and put everything else, except my bare essentials, on the bigger drive?

Thanks!

Any ideas? I even did a system restore and that didn't get rid of it.....I've researched it and that hasn't helped.

I have almost 2 Gb of music on my computer that I'd hate to lose. And hate to have to rebuy or redownload too.

So what I'm wondering is... can I back up all that music on 3-4 700mb disks as a data disk instead of making a 70 minute music disk?

I have Sonic RecordNow that I use for music burning and data backup. I'm just wondering if it is possible to back up 1/3 of it in a folder as a data disk, and do the same for the other parts.

Possible? Would this work?

It would make much more sense to have 4 disks that although you could not PLAY them in a CD player as the songs would be stored in a folder on it, to just be able to copy them out onto another computer instead of making 20+ audio CD's.

Would my idea work? Help me out guys...

I had a fresh install of 7 and everything was working fine.
All of a sudden it starts randomly freezing and programs start responding.
I got KERNAL_PAGING_ERROR BSODs etc. and got a new disk, thinking it was that.
After cloning the new disk which didn't work, and produced loads of errors on chkdsk, I decided to do a clean install of 7.

I still keep getting "Disk boot error, insert system disk and press enter", and when it does boot, it freezes all the time and every time I click the start button, it basically crashed and is messed up.

Tried new SATA cable and ports. Any ideas?

Hello, TSG!

Just yesterday I was using the computer normally until I got a Blue Screen. Getting a blue screen is usually something normal that occurs to my every so often, so I didn't mind it and rebooted the computer normally. However, I got two more blue screens within the next hour. The 3rd time rebooting, my computer starts to act strange as if it had a virus. Upon powering up the monitor would just display a black screen with two lines about something --- which I don't remember, sorry --- and stayed like that unless I plugged out the power cord or held on the power button to shut down. Then when after a few tries it boots and displays a message "Floppy Disk Failure" and "Drive 1 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-1" (and the same message for Drives 2 and 3) show up. Also it asks me to continue loading by pressing the F1 Key.

When Windows loads the first time, it displays a message saying a bunch of hardware has just been installed and ready for use. Also, my internal clock resetted itself back to Monday, November 07, 2005 (Which, if I recall, is the date when I got the computer) and my speakers do not work.

TL;DR Version
3 blue screens within a short time
Floppy disk fail
Drivers 1-3 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-1-3

Anyway, I browsed through Google but I haven't seen anyone with both problems. I disabled my Floppy Disk Drive and that message doesn't show up anymore, but the others do and my computer still isn't fixed. I ran a vir... Read more

But after that I can't read my hard disk (WD)in my computer.
It can read in computer management there.

Ways I try:

2)I try to unchecked the hide folder and device at view.
3)I try to update the software BUT it still disfunction.
4)I try to use disk management and initialized it BUT there appeared CANNOT INITIALIZED Due to I/O device error.

Any solution for me ?

The most usual cause is that the Hard Drive is beginning to fail. Back up your stuff. Go to the website of the manufacturer and test the drive.

I loaned my USB flash (Imation Atom 4GB) disk to a colleague; it was working fine when I gave it to her. She could not dismount the disk from her netbook, even after everything was closed. The computer kept saying the disk was in use. After 5 minutes of this, I pulled the disk out and put it into my machine.

First, Microsoft Security Essentials found and removed “Worm:Win32/Autorun.gen!inf.

Next, I was given the message "Do you want to scan the disk for errors?" I clicked 'yes' but got a "Windows can't check the disk while it is in use. Do you want to dismount the volume first?" I click on "Force dismount" and received a message "Windows can't check the disk while it is in use. Do you want to check for hard disk errors next time you start your computer." I check the box that says “Schedule disk check,” the box automatically closes. I re-start my computer, it boots up just fine, but does not appear to do any type of disk check.

I have no problems “safely removing the disk.” I can eject it every time without fail, but every time I plug the device back into the system, I receive the “scan and fix” prompt.

When I try to format the device, I am given the message "The drive is in use. Another program or process is using this device. Do you want to format it anyway?" I click "Yes" and receive the message "Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or programs that are using... Read more

I have four external drives (FAT32) and opened Partition Magic a couple of days ago. It said one drive was "BAD". MS Disk Administrator says drive is "Healthy".

I am able to access this drive through Windows Explorer and do anything I want with the data. This appears to be a false reading by Partition Magic but I am not completely convinced of this because it has been such a good program for many years.

Do you think I have a failing drive?

A:Partition Magic says drive "BAD". Disk Administrator says "Healthy"

I wouldn't trust either program. Find out the manufacturer of the hard drive and download their hard drive diagnostics. The manufacturer's own tests should give you a much better idea if its in good shape or not.

Hi guys. I'm new here. I've tried to read all the discussion about how to fix the unallocated hard drive but I just can't understand it as the cases were pretty much different than I'm facing of.

Here's my problem.
Yesterday my external hard drive seems normal, everything is fine, until there's a blackout and I have to put "sleep" to my laptop. After the power got back, the hard drive suddenly gone and when I check the list of drives under "Disk Management", it showed up as "Disk 1 - Unallocated".

(I've attached screenshots here for your viewing)

My external hard drive is WD My Passport 1TB. It contains a lot of valuable data I cannot afford to lose. I really hope there's a way to fix this, and once I get back all of those precious data I will buy another HD to transfer them ASAP because I cant let this happen to me again.

Your help is so, very much appreciated.
Any questions regarding my problem, let me know. I'll provide all of the details you guys need.

NOTE
1) I've tried TestDisk but on the "Analyse" process, it says "read error"
2) I've changed cable, but the situation remains the same.
3) I've tried Recuva, but it doesnt recognize my external drive.

I have tried to load all of the options -- and none successfully load.
I also end up at a OneKey Recovery as well.. unfortunately, the laptop does not have initial backup or user backup images.
I have a Windows 8 CD for repairing purposes.. however, I cannot load the BIOS/UEFI to change the boot order to load the optical drives first. I have also tried to remove the CMOS battery to fix it.. did not work. .
Also - Windows Boot Manager:
Windows Setup [EMS Enabled] -- does not load properly (leads to OneKey Recovery) Safe Mode (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Networking (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Command Prompt (doesn't load - tries to boot and load all files onto partition that is too small.. can't change partition?)
Enable Boot Logging Enable Low-Resolution Video Debugging MOde Disable automatic restart on system failure Disable Driver Signature Enforcement Display Early Launch Anti-Malware Driver
Start Windows Normally
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi

A 3.5" external hard drive connected to my Windows XP machine via USB 2.0 has a "disappearing" and "reappearing" partition problem.

After the external drive is turned on, all four partitions on it will be displayed. Very soon, they will all disappear in Windows Explorer. After a brief moment, they will reappear along with a USB-symbol icon in the taskbar, which brings up a "Hi-speed USB Device Attached to non-Hi-speed Hub" warning suggesting that I use free Hi-speed USB ports (indicated in bold).

My computer's USB ports are all USB 2.0 and I've tried attaching the external drive to different ports on the machine, all with the same result.

Would anyone hazard a guess as to the likely cause of this problem:
(1) Failed (or failing) USB controller on the external enclosure?
(2) Failing power supply to the xeternal enclosure?
(3) Corrupted partition table on the drive?
(4) Failed (or failing) USB controller on the mobo?
(5) Any other cause?

The enclosure also has an eSATA port. When connected via eSATA (or USB 2.0) to another computer, no such problem appears.

Thanks in advance!

In the midst of doing this, I got the message

No, that is not a typo...it says "insert your now"...it does not designate what to insert. I inserted the Dell Reinstallation DVD and I get the message that I've inserted the wrong CD.

I screwed things up pretty badly because instead of just setting the Bios options to recognize my RAID array and though there was some bigger issue at play an ended up reinstalling windows before I figured it out. Anyway, everything worked fine for a few months, but then this not genuine box started appearing and disappearing in the bottom corner. It does go away, and I am able to install updates, so I think it's just an error with my bios as I saw in another thread, but I want to make sure before I touch anything. I ran the diagnostic report a few minutes back when the logo was down there (although it's since gone away again). This is just a bit annoying.

Hello,

I need help with this Diskette issue please. "Diskette Drive 0 Seek Failure"
I've had this problem a few times in a couple of years and I have been able to fix the error by pressing F2 and going to the SETUP. And I've done this with no issues. But this time I thought I fixed it but now I get this new error: "A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". After I press Ctrl+Alt+Del it takes me back to the same error massage "A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". Need help please. This is a Dell Desktop, Windows XP.
Thank you.

Help!!!!

I have a laptop Toshiba, Satellite A45 and I can't get on the web, or load most of my programs due to an error message saying "one touch can't enumerate". When I tried to load the Maxtor One Touch CD to remove and re-install, I got the error message, "can't scipt" (error message Microsoft 1719) "Windows installer service could not be addressed". I had downloaded a spyware program and backed up first, but cannot upload the back up due the problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am on my desktop, so can receive email. Thank you,

Any ideas?
I have a DV8305us, and bought a copy of Media Center from TigerDirect and did a clean install. After getting all the updates done last night, I still can't figure out how to make the text (in this site, for instance) look normal. It looks like it's anemic. I have screen resolution set to 1440x900. I did have it set to 1280x800, and the text looked "more" normal, but it also looked "unclean".
Thanks,
George

A:Just reinstalled XP MediaCenter, now all my text looks "thin"

BTW, It's not just on the internet. My desktop labels under icons look thin also. I'm sure it's just a setting, but i don't know where to look.

Here's the story. I bought this new Samsung 840 250GB SSD.
I first did a clean install of windows 7 on it and it worked fine. Windows installed without much problem and everything. Then something didn't look right about the partitions. It looked like because I had all my HDDs connected while installing windows on the SSD the windows created the system reserve on the old HDD rather than the SSD. So I went back and decided to start from scratch with all the HDDs except for the SSD disconnected. I tried reinstalling windows on it but this time it didn't work. I tried formatting the SSD and it just gave me an error saying windows couldn't install on a GPT disk. I went into bios, made sure the PC was booting from the UEFI DVD drive and it still kept giving me the same error.

So I then booted up my old HDD. I tried formatting my SSD and now I can't delete the partition!
This is what my disk set up looks like:

If I click "extend volume" on the "New Volume (G" disk, it says "there is not enough space on the disk(s) to complete this operation".
If I try to create a "new simple volume" on the "unallocated" partition, it says the same...

Have I destroyed my new SSD now?! I just want it to work like a new clean disk...

A:If I try to "extend volume" it gives "not enough space on the disk(s)"

Hiyya Tracing try doing it with Partition Wizard mate Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition.
Brilliant tool if you can't do anything with the partition them just wipe the disk mate and start over with this SSD Alignment

Newbie here. I have searched around for a while but have not found a post with my exact situation.

I just installed a new Seagate Momentus 500gb (7200rpm) SATA drive in my Lenovo X61 laptop and have been working on a installation of Windows7 Ultimate.

Not realizing this was an upgrade install disk, I tried to install Win7. I didn't know about the clean install method, so I started over with an installation of WinXP (slipstreamed to deal with the SATA drive).

Next, I ran the Custom Installation upgrade to Win7.

So far, it seems to be working ok.

However, the Local Drive is D: instead of C:. The System Reserved drive in labeled C:. Should I be concerned? Should/Can I change this?

Attached are screenshots of Disk Management and explorer window.

Thank you for any info.
-Nate

A:"System Reserved (C:)" and "Local Disk (D:)" ??

Try removing the System Reserved drive letter in Disk Management to see if Win7 claims C instead. It sometimes works.

There is no reason you can't operate with Win7 as D even though it is meant to always assume the C letter unless it's installer is run from another OS.

But if you do I would not allow a drive letter for SysReserved as programs can write to and corrupt it, especially the ability to make Win7 backup images.

Now that you know you can clean install Win7 without needing XP on the HD, I would strongly consider booting the installer to do a Custom install, choose Drive Options to Delete all partitions, Create new as you wish, then Format before installing to first partition after SysReserved it will create for you. The installer will see an OS at boot to allow use of Upgrade version key upfront during install.

Here are tips to get a perfect reinstall - use the ones which apply: Clean Reinstall steps

I have added a SATA drive to my Vista machine that was once loaded with Win XP, the Device Manager does pick it up as well as Disk Management, but under Disk Management it states the drive is "Unknown" and "unreadable" I also do not have any options once I right click on the "Unallocated" area.

I just want this disk formatted and used as extra storage, I did load the Vista DVD and tried to load it on this disk but I got an error as well.

This drive works fine if I put it back in the machine it came from.

A:"Unknown" and "Unreadable" disk drive

Check BIOS settings for RAID and SATA. It may need to be tweaked.

Download and run the disk manufacturer's utility to partition and format this drive. That should find the drive and do the job for you.

You didn't say what brand of drive it was, so I can't point you to the utility, but you can find it with a search of the manufacturer.

Windows Update error code 80070490 appeared on 20 September 2013 and message "Windows can't check for updates". I use Windows Vista Home basic 32 bit, Service Pack 2. I tried almost all suggestions in Internet (including these on Microsoft Web-page) about this how to fix this problem, including Microsoft Fix It, System Update Readiness Tool, Windows Update Diagnostics DIAGCAB file and etc., but the message continue to appear. The last successful update was on 13.09.2013. All updates made before and on 13 September are written as "successful" in "Update history" folder, but when I open "Installed Updates" folder, I don't see nothing and there is written "No updates are installed on this computer", which is strange, because by this moment Windows Update was made automatically without any problems. Please help me to fix the problem with this error code!

ps.: On 23 of September I reinstalled Windows Update Software from Microsoft Web Page:
Microsoft Update
and the notification message " Windows can't check for updates" from my taskbar dissapeared and never appeared again, so..i thought the problem is solved, but yesterday evening(13 October) when i opened Widnows Update in my Control Panel and pressed "Check for updates" it started to seek for updates but after some time again showed me the same error code and the same message "Windows could not search for new updates". Hi;
Had a sudden inability to go much further than a third or forth-level download on ANY given webpage and then PC would seize-up, requiring "cont+alt+del" in order to get freed-up. Thought perhaps I picked-up a bug of some sort during a recent google search, and went immediately to Panda and Trendmicro to perform both virus as well as malware scans. While the Panda scan was loading-up, I received the following error message....

... " DoPatch....dll reports error....Error "C:\WINNT\patch.utp"....unreadable or not a patch file..."

Was able to complete both scans. Nothing found other than tracking cookies.

I then did a file serch for the above and located it. It was installed TODAY apparently, and not by me, within minutes of the problem starting.

I'm guessing someone/thing slipped this patch into my WINNT file or modified it while I was doing the google search, so I have included a HJT scan below.

Hope this all makes sense and ties-out to something. Any help would be genuinely appreciated-
thanks

Okay , this is going to be a very long post . So bear with me here

I have an acer aspire 5742g laptop . I use wifi at my home , and the wireless network seemed to work fine there.

Then after a few days I came to the hostel . We have wifi in the hostel , so I tried to connect my laptop with the wifi . And there is a message that came , "Unable to connect to stes(name of the wifi network ) , earlier I thought that it was a temporary thing and that it would work the next day, but then the next day , my room mates arrived and their laptops connected easily without the error message .

1)When I click on the wifi icon on the right hand side bottom bar , I can see the network , but it does not connect , and gives me the same error message .

2)When I click on Network and Sharing Center , and then on manage wireless network , I don't see the name(stes) of the wireless network(So I can't even remove it)

3)I have tried uninstalling, installing, updating my network adapter , drivers etc . but none of the things have worked .

I can't seem to figure out what the problem is . Its really bugging me now :| , I formatted my laptop , restored it to factory settings , nothing worked.
I also tried to connect through a hotspot which I made from my mobile and it got connected easily without any problem .
Can anyone help me out here ?
