Manually browse and download Microsoft Drivers from windows update.

Q: Manually browse and download Microsoft Drivers from windows update.

Hi all,

I use Linux and CUPS to provide free and stable networking printing shares for our community centre. Its easy to connection windows xp clients to the linux printer server, windows 7 is a pain, I have a work around, but would like to make it more streamlined.

I can get some older printers that do not have official windows 7 drivers working by using windows update during the driver selection phase of the printer set-up procedure. And selecting a slightly different printer from the list of available windows update drivers.

While this method works, there is a delay of between 5-10 minutes after clicking the windows update button before the list of drivers appears.

I would like to know if its possible to do any of the following 2 ideas:

1. manually access these driver files on Microsoft website somewhere, and download them for latter use.

2. Find where windows 7 saves the downloaded driver files and package them some how so they can be re-distributed.

As always your comments/suggestions are very welcome.

I don't think there is a way to do that I would recommend that you set up a domain and be the system administrator for all fo the Windows 7 pcs, so you can install all of the updates on all of the computers at the same time.

So, Secunia has just told me that the versions of Microsoft Outlook 2002, Word 2002, and Excel 2002 I have on my computer (Windows XP Home SP3) are unsecure and need to be updated. Secunia provides direct download links to Microsoft for these updates, but there are some hassles (I know! Hassles? With Microsoft?!).First, it opens IE -- it apparently won't work with Firefox. Second, all the update links lead to a page that signs me up for a Microsoft Update service that gives Microsoft even greater access to my PC.Unless it's absolutely necessary, I just have no desire to provide more access to my computer to a bunch of strangers.Does anyone know if there's a way to update these programs without signing up for a service? Even today, not all computers are hooked up to the internet -- I figure there must be a way to just get the updated files. Thanks!Apologies if this is in the wrong forum.

Microsoft/Windows Update works when you let it "automatically" install updates - i.e. Click on "Turn Off".

It fails when I try to do it manually.

NOTE: It is only the install that fails - "A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed". I have no problem selecting and downloading updates.

I have tried a number of ideas posted here and elsewhere. But, so far, nothing has resolved the issue. This is not a result of a repair, serivice pack update, etc. I tried Dial-a-fix also, but it did not work either.

I have a limited wifi issue. Toshiba states update KB3114149 may solve the issue. I can't determine if this update was included when I upgraded to 10586/1511 as it is not listed in Update History.

Is there a way to manually download that update ?

First off, I am using Windows XP SP2.

I am trying to update my modem drivers. They are not an auto install package. I go into the device manager and find the card. Neither right clicking and selecting update driver nor going into properties and selecting update driver from the driver tab launches the hardware update wizard. So, I cannot tell it where the drivers are. Nothing happens at all in fact except when i select it from the properties screen, the Cancel button greys out.

I have tested several other devices and none of them launch the wizard.

Need to fix the screensaver issue that doesn't kick in for users that have an IntelliPoint wireless mouse.  Installing the KB 911895 from Microsoft via Windows Update solves this problem.  However we need to automate applying this update to
our users.  We can't go to every user that needs this resolved and run windows update manually to get this update.  Can't seem to find a way to get my hands on this update to deploy silently where it's needed.  Any idea's how I can get this

So there are links to this site everywhere. I am skeptical. Has anyone gone there, used them? Why? Does it end up as a subscription service to solve the problems created?

Drivers obtained from:
  a.  System manufacturer's website, if laptop or other OEM system (HP, Dell, Lenovo, etc.)
  b.  Motherboard CD or component manufacturer's website, if system is self-built.
  c.  The CD which came with the system/component (reflects known working drivers).
The drivers available via Windows Update...should generally NOT be used unless you are totally desperate and cannot find them anywhere else or any other way, IMO.

I'm sure this has been discussed a million times before. I can't get microsoft updates but I can go to other sites and I am receiving occasional popups and re-directs. I have ran Adaware, Malware Bytes and Spybot S&D. All have found and removed items, but the problem still persists.

I am usually very careful and haven't had a virus in several years on this laptop. I downloaded a plugin from to be able to open a document that I purchased. So either it was in the document or in the plugin/site.

I would appreciate any help you can give me on this issue, I won't be able to do anything on the laptop til I get home tonight after work.

Thanks in advance!

A:Can't browse to Microsoft Update, can go to other sites

i have a very similar problem right now. i have run AVG, ad-aware, spybot, they found a few things and i deleted/healed the issues.

but my problem persists. many websites just won't open for me, i have to refresh 5 times or more sometimes until the website actually opens. i use the latest version of firefox in vista. in the status bar at the bottom of firefox is sometimes see that it is trying to redirect to could it somehow be a bug that does weird stuff with google? anyone know what it could be?
sometimes an extra window pops up and opens a blank page at the page too. isn't that strange?

any thoughts on what else i could do to sweep my computer, or if someone know what this bug is, it would be much appreciated!

I am doing a project for a corporation that has disabled Windows Update on all of their computers. I need to install a wide range of printers on these systems, but allot of these drivers are only available on Windows Update for these Windows 7 systems, which is making it extremely difficult for me to install these printers.

Is there someplace where I can download all Windows Update printer drivers, or a way to download and extract them myself?

If you haven't been there yet, go here,

I remember in Vista almost everyone said not to download drivers from Microsoft Update. But is it now safe in Windows 7? I think it is because I had downloaded a driver from HP and it caused problems. I downloaded a driver from the manufacturer website. It still caused problems. I tried it through Microsoft Update seeing as I had nothing else to lose and no problems. Is it just me or everyone else? I will add a poll to see results.

A:Is it safe to download drivers from Windows Update?

For me, I got problems with them. I always consider that the best drivers are those downloaded directly from the manufacturer's website.

So, my answer is "No."

I want to manually update Win7 -- automatic updates are disabled
- I got caught twice last year with bad updates
- I am not having any problems with Windows
- trial (3rd day) of Kaspersky Internet Security, "Safe Money" (banking feature) is nagging me to update Windows

In "Windows Updates" window I have already clicked "Check for Updates"

If I click "Install Now" will it also automatically update Windows ... as well as updating the updater
- never have I seen "update the updater"

I do not want a total auto-update of Windows

Once the updater is updated, how would I do a selective manual update of Windows by each KB in turn ?
MS tute Install Windows updates in Windows 7 is not clear enough for me
- I vaguely remember a list of KBs that I could selectively install (or ignore) one at a time.
- the last manual Win7 update I did was in 2013

A:Update windows manually, how ?

This is just an update to the updater. It will not change your manual settings to automatic. You can continue to apply manual updates once the updater is updated.

I'm trying to download updates through Windows Update, it shows that I have 139 important updates, and 40 optional ones. I selected them and clicked the install button but it got stuck at "Downloading updates (0 kb total, 0% complete)". I cancelled and retried choosing only 24 important updates and the same happened. I tried the check for updates option but it also keeps checking forever.
I also tried downloading updates from Microsoft Download Center but when I try to install them it hangs on "searching for updates on this computer".
I already ran the Microsoft Fix It tool, disabled my anti-virus and firewall, but nothing works.
I cannot install the SURT because it also keeps searching for updates.

I need to update so I can upgrade to Windows 10 - the setup also got stuck while checking for updates, so I was hoping that updating beforehand would do the trick.

Any suggestions on how to fix this problem are appreciated.

Hello all! Hoping I can get some help here, this issue is driving me totally insane.

I have a Gigabyte G41M-Combo motherboard with an Atheros AR8151 ethernet component.

I re-installed Windows 7 today. It failed to automatically detect the ethernet component, so I couldn't get online. No big deal, I just used Google Translate to painstakingly navigate Atheros' website at a friend's house until I could find the driver files, download them to a cellphone, and take them home.

Yet alas, when I open Device Manager and point it to the drivers I want to use, it tells me it won't, because Windows has cleverly determined that I'm already running the best drivers for that device.

Weird. So I totally uninstall the drivers (from Device Manager), scan for hardware changes, then update the drivers again, pointing to the files I downloaded.

Again, within 10 seconds -- "Windows has failed to install device drivers!" "Windows has determined that you're already using the best device drivers."

How can I force it to listen to me, and just install what I ask it to? I honestly have absolutely zero idea of anything else I could do. It won't let me install new drivers, and it won't install its own.

A:Windows fails to auto-install network card drivers, then won't allow it manually.

if it's a brand-name PC, you must use only drivers from the PC manufacturer's website.
On brand-name (OEM) computers, drivers direct from the device or motherboard manufacturer will usually be the wrong ones. OEM hardware is custom-made, hence custom drivers are required. Only the PC manufacturer has these.

That important update that failed really wasn't so IMPORTANT, I guess.
Anyhow, I wish to try to install it. Can't find how.

I've been experiencing with Windows Update KB976902 causing printer spooler errors and repeated blue screen system crashes on multiple hard drives for this one system.  The printer spooler errors first occurred
back in 2010 right after an automatic download and install of Windows Update KB976902.  I personally have done extensive online research over the years to source a permanent resolution to this problem and the final conclusion is to permanently delete/

will not uninstall the update.  A system restore to an earlier point will not remove the update.  Complete deletion and fresh reinstall of the Windows OS will not remove this update either.  I even attempted to tinker around in regedit to find

really couldn't figure that out.  Cannot locate the folder/ file location of this update anywhere on the OS other than the Programs and Features location.  View Installed Updates does not provide any option for uninstall.

A:How to manually remove Windows Update KB976902

According to the KB below information, there is no way to uninstall this update. Because it's a hotfix used to fix system problem, this hotfix would replace plenty of system file with new edition.
For your problem, we can try to fix printer problem by upgrade its driver edition, etc.
For BSOD problem, it would be better to collect minidump file, we'll make further research with this problem by using dump file.
please refer to the contents of the link below for more details and provide the dump files to us.

On the other hand, it's hard to say it's KB976902 problem. You can try to perform a Clean Boot to check whether this problem caused
by 3rd program or service start with system. Refer to the link below for more details.

When I am on the page use the link for downloading "Download the Update for Windows 7 SP1 for x64-based systems package now." I end up on a page where I can push "Download". When I push it I end up on a page
with "Thank you for downloading" but nothing happens. There is a line with "If your download does not start after 30 seconds,
Click here" - if I do I end up on a page
where it is listed:

Hello all. I've had to disable automatic updates as this one and KB2518870 don't install and the PC keeps trying to download them every day! When I go into control panel it tells me that I have MS.NET Framework 4 Client Profile. But cannot uninstall it. When I go to the "turn windows feature on/off" option it says I have MS.NET Framework 3.5.1

I've tried reloading version 4 from the MS website but it tells me I already have version 4 (or the download is being blocked). I've tried a clean boot - doesn't help. I've tried turning off Norton - doesn't help. Error code is 66A (unknown error).

I'm running Windows 7 Home premium on a Dell Studio One. Problems with these downloads seem to be quite common.

I've tried downloading them individually - doesn't help.

A:(another) cannot download update KB2478663 for Microsoft.NET 4

All fixed. First the 2 updates disappeared from the important list without being installed and a MS.NET Framework 4 Client Profile update appeared in the recommended list. After installing this the other 2 reappeared in the important list and installed without any problem! It's a mystery to me.

I have found that I can no longer retrieve microsoft updates. When I attempt to do so I get a blank page and lower left instruction informs me there is an error on page. Also every so often I get a pop-up that states I have a script error in internet explorer with no specific details. I have researched this extensively. I have windows XP installed. If the files mshtml and jscript are not found on my computer would this be the problem. Help because I can usually fix my notebook problems by self help with investigation but not in this case.

2 problems.

1) I disabled Windows Update in Services to avoid having to deal with the bullsh* updates. Later I put it on "manual" instead of "disabled". Today I find that my computer is "installing updates" WITHOUT a) my permission and b) without notifying me that there were updates to install. This thrashed my hard drive with near constant 100% usage from something called Windows Modules Installer Worker. I killed the process, rebooted after some Adobe Reader issue (unrelated....I think). Upon selecting "restart" Windows informs me that it is updating my system WITHOUT my permission. It continues, updates, says finished, restarts to 0%, finishes, reboots.

Upon restart--which takes FOREVER by the way without the "updating" message, when it used to only take a few seconds to boot up--I go to Services where I find Windows Update is set on "running". Even though I manually stopped it, and set it to "manual trigger" start....

2) After restart when I am in Services to kill Windows Update and set to manual--again--I see something called Update Agent, set to run automatically. I do not remember this service from before, and I have no idea what it does different from Windows Update. I set it on manual as well.

What does Update Agent do differently from Windows Update? They are listed as separate services

What happened to make my computer update without my consent??

Help! I am completely unable to update Win7 Home Premium 64, or download any content related to or recieved via any Microsoft portal.

Using Windows Update I receive the error code 80072EE2. After searching every forum i could find the only solution offered was deactivate any third party firewalls and retry. I completely shut down all firewalls and anti-virus software including Microsoft Defender. This made no difference. I can't update Windows, Xbox Live, Windows Live or receive content from any of these. Also couldn't activate Win7 online.

The only other thing I can think of is that I'm using a Mobile Broadband connection (Vodafone NZ Vodem - Huawei) running Vodafone Mobile Connect v9.2.1.6545) Could this be part of the problem? Never had any problems with XP.

I have a new laptop with Windows XP SP2 on it, IE6 (though I use Firefox, not IE), and MS Office 2003 Student Edition. The latest update that popped up as "high priority" from Windows Update is this GDI+ Detection Tool (KB873374).

It sounds like you have to install it then run it and then visit MS Office website to check for updates...? Is this worth doing? Can it cause more problems than it will help? (I thought I've read about issues when updating MS Office with security patches...? And that you have to download yet something else to even check for Office security updates...?)

Or do Office security updates come through Windows Update, and I don't need to worry about this? (But if that's the case, then why even have this GDI+ thing available?)

I'm always worried about ending up with a bunch of conflicts with other programs like AVG, ZA, AutoGK, DVDShrink, etc. And I'm always hesitant to install something that has to run on my system.

I've got AVG and ZA, keep both up to date, and I have Automatic Updates turned on just to let me know when there's a critical update (so I don't have to visit the Windows Update site to get updates).

I was thinking I would only do the updates to Office that come through Automatic Updates and not worry about any others...

Also, what's the difference between Microsoft Update and Windows Update? Is it better to have Microsoft Update, or does that have its own set of problems associated with it? (A... Read more

A:Questions About Microsoft Gdi+ Detection Tool & Microsoft Update Vs. Windows Update

Well to start off the difference between windows update and microsoft update is as follows. Windows update is what originally comes with the computer and only updates the windows platform. If you choose to upgrade to the microsoft update it will check all of your microsoft programs for updates.
As far as going to the office website for updates... unless you want to install non-critical updates to your office suite then you shouldn't have to at all. Finally - that GDI+ detection tool is the little program microsoft uses to scan your computer for any of their products - that is if you use microsoft update and not the original windows update.
So if you like your computer to maintain critical updates by itself for the microsoft programs than yes use microsoft update and yes install the GDI+ decection tools.

Hope this helps you out!

I tried to run Windows Defender Offline 64 bit on a friend's laptop using WDO installed on a USB stick, but it refused to scan the disk because it insisted on getting Updates to its definitions before scanning.

So either the definitions on the USB stick were too old or not present at all or WDO couldn't find them. I had not run WDO from that USB stick before.

But the laptop had just a Wi-Fi connection and WDO doesn't work over Wi-Fi.

I have successfully used the 32 bit WDO USB stick on my own Desktop without such a problem, probably because my Desktop is connected to the Internet via a LAN.

I checked another thread on this subject on SevenForums, here:

Defender Offline on DVD failed because no internet connection

I disagree with the statement by karlsnooks that WDO does not need an Internet connection. This was confirmed here:

defender offline cannot update no internet connection - Microsoft Community

However, if someone knows how to manually download the virus definitions and copy them to a USB stick, I would be very interested.

I suppose I could download and create another WDO ISO file on my hard drive and see what's in it, try to identify the definitions and update the equivalent files on the USB stick... but that would be very much trial and error. If someone has actually done it, please let me know.

Hello there,This is my first post. I believe I have a virus issue - Win32/Alureon.A exists on my PC. I understand that this may be responsible for the re-direction issues I am experiencing when using Google. What happens is that I select a particular website from the returned Google search list and Google redirects me to another website. In trying to fix this I went to windows update to make sure I was up to date. I was unable to manually execute Windows Update. Then I realised that I had not been getting the relevant updates.I then activated Windows Defender. I had it turned off as I use the AVG Anti Virus software protection (free version). I then did a scan using a Microsoft product "something scanner" which took hours to run. It did identify the presence of Virus:Win32/Alureon.A . When I looked this up I could see it was related to my "re-direction issues" with Google.I am unable to get the Windows update to work properly. I understand to safely browse in windows, one needs a good av, fw plus a updated windows system or is having a updated os really needed?

A:Installed xp sp3, Windows Update not Working, Safe to browse?

You should do it in this order:

Do a reinstall of Windows XP Home Edition SP2.

Download and save and then install the full 316 MB SP3 upgrade.

Go to Windows Update/Microsoft Update, then download and install the 100+ post-SP3 high priority updates.

The goal is to get Windows XP completely up-to-date before you start installing a bunch of programs and extras in that computer.

Stay away from a third-party firewall, such as ZoneAlarm, and stick with the Windows built-in firewall.

What's the brand name and model name and model number of that computer?

How much RAM does it have?

In updates from MS every month there are always some 'critical' ones that nobody should ignore. However, only XPsp3 and later gets them. So yes, having an updated OS is a must.
Having said that, firefox is safer than IE in the main, and an AV and firewall are as much as you should ever need, provided they are kept up-to-date. Also Adobe and Java software is notorious for bugs. Keep updates going on Flash, acrobat, pdf reader, java also.

As soon as I recheck the box, all browsing stops (Page cannot be displayed).

I tried manually downloading an MP3 for a podcast and then put it in My Music fold that seems to contain all my music and podcasts for iTunes. However, then the file didn't t seem to appear in iTunes.

Does someone know what I am doing wrong?

I'm using Windows 7 x64 Ultimate SP1.

I want to manually check for updates, make Windows download them if there is any, but wouldn't install at that moment, instead make Windows install them next time I shut it down.

In Windows XP, it was easy. You just selected the option to download. And when you attempt to shut down Windows, it asked if you want to shut down normally, or you want to install updates while shutting down.

However, in Windows 7, I couldn't find a way to do this same behavior. Can you please tell me how to, if there is any way to do it?

A:How to: Manually, download updates but not install

Use this address to find the updates you want
in the right hand corner theres a search box, type in your windows version
then find the specific files you want\need
then save them wherever you want

Handy for reinstalls without having to download everything again
Stop Windows Update in services first
then run your updates
then START WU again and check for updates

Bit confused.... you state you are running 10240. That is pre-RTM release. Current build is 10586.29. How can you be updating 10240 with updates for 10586?

I came across an issue that I find confusing. Whilst trying to install a software to run a mobile USB flash modem, the software pops this message:

your current device installation settings is configured to prefer drivers from Windows Update over locally installed
drivers. This can cause Unlimited data Manager not to work correctly.

do you want to change the settings to prefer locally installed drivers over Windows Update?

What does it imply if I change my settings to prefer locally installed drivers over windows update drivers?
And can this action be undone and where/how? (I searched my machine but didn't find where this option is)

Thank you for reading

I've tried a 7 Forums Guide to delete drivers from an elevated command prompt. Access is denied whether GUI or CMD window. Ideally I would like permission to delete from GUI. I want to use the mobo manufacturer's original sound driver & not the MS driver (that I cannot delete in Device manager.) It installs each boot, as trumps the original as newer. Really annoying & tricksy, so I do not know what term to Google & hope I'm not being lazy to bother you with my question.

There are five driver files within the same system32 folder;

C:\Windows\system32>DEL /F /S /Q /A "C:\Windows\system32\drivers\drmk.sys"

My audio will die if computer left to sleep for a "longer" (as opposed to shorter) period. I hope the original driver may work better. I like to leave my tower slept as it is much quicker to resume than to boot, Linux works just fine that way. I am taking the Windows challenge & quite enjoying myself till now.

A:Manually Delete Drivers?

If you install the board's audio drive that should disable the generic w7 one. It doesn't generally need to be fussed with at all.

Is this a new problem?

How do you do it in XP?
Where are the drivers stored?

Thanks in advance.

It depends what the "driver" belongs to.
Can you tell us what was installed and uninstalled, and how you uninnstalled it?

Hi guys,

I've just put my Dell Studio back to factory settings after having it for two years and deciding to give it a rebirth. I maintain my laptop very well but always like to do a reset every so often.

The problem I'm having now is that the damn thing wont update from Windows Update. It will identify that there are 76 important or critical downloads, but hangs at 0% downloading.

I went to the MS catalogue and tried to download manually, but even though I had the updates selected in my basket, again, it just hung on 0%.

I've ran Kasperskys TDS, the Malicious Tool Removal MS thingy-ma-jig, ran an sfc check where it did note there were corrupt files but it couldn't fix them. The Fix It link to the MS Update Not Working thing found no problems either.

So, I'm scratching my head and going to do a restart and see what's going on.

Any help greatly appreciated as this is doing my nut in.

Interestingly, I've just reset and it's telling me the system had to be restarted to finish installing updates, but when you click on it for more info, there's no updates listed. Bloody liar.

A:Will not download Updates automatically or manually via MS Catalogue

Welcom to the forum
If you'r facing a problem in WU then use the tool provided by MS to resolve this problem:

Download: System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [February 2012] - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

If after that the problem persist and you say that you reset every so often, then consider to dowload your same version of your OS from:

Good luck

I recently upgraded this old Dell M1530 Vista x64 laptop to Windows 8 Enterprise x64.

Apparently the sound company for it (Sigmatel) went out of business before Windows 7 was even released and their latest drivers are some ancient Vista drivers.

Should I download and install the Sigmatel drivers or continue to use the drivers that come with Windows 8? (They seem to be fine so far, just seeing if there's any other input on this).

Do you think that the Windows 8 drivers would probably be better based on the fact that they're much newer and made to run in 8, regardless of the fact that it wasn't made for my system specifically?

All I've ever really cared about is what has the best maximum output levels. I really hate sound drivers that are very limited in how loud you can make them output. My old laptop (this M1530) is actually better than my current Origin beast laptop in terms of sound because the sound driver on my new laptop (Realtek) doesn't allow very much loudness at all on a set of headphones. The only reason I ever liked the Sigmatel drivers is because they let you turn up the volume until it's so loud it could blow your ears (and your speakers) out.

Or perhaps it's hardware and has nothing to do with the drivers. I dunno, I'm too stupid.

Point is, drivers that came with my system that aren't designed to work with this OS or go with the Win 8 default drivers?

A:Should I download the old drivers or keep the Windows drivers?

There is a saying, "if it's not broke, don't fix it" so I would stick with the working one. You could save the old driver as a backup.

My mouse, keyboard, usb dac, and virtual dvd drive are all having problems with drivers. I can plug my keyboard in wherever I want and use it in the bios, but once i get to windows, i have a whole two usb ports that my keyboard works in anymore. This is the result of a number of failed attempts by windows to find and install generic driver software, which I don't actually need (because the keyboard works just fine in some ports, and before i accidentally let windows try to find the drivers, it worked smoothly in the others as well). This is the case for all of the listed devices. Whenever I ask windows to install driver software, it tells me that i have to insert a disc (incidentally, none of these devices come with discs because windows si supposed to have the drivers by default). When I click other options and set it to browse my entire drive for drivers, it gives me an error message that says that it found driver software, but the selected file could not be found. For everything. and then whatever it is, is unable to work in that port again. I tried downloading microsofts intellipoint drivers, and that didn't work. Please, help me fix this so I dont have to re install?

A:Windows can't install drivers on its own, won't let me manually install.

I ran the notmyfault.exe and found these old .sys with the lmsmtn command. They are from Connext (Audio), IBM (Client Access) and Apple (added by me directly to System32) and I have as far as I know the latest drivers for everything.

Should I delete them or not? If so, do I need to unregister them first or anything if I do?

I've not got a problem - I'm just interested what the best procedure is.

Hi all, I'm having trouble installing drivers for a Canon S520 printer on a new machine with W7 Home Premium, SP1 (6.1.7601). I'm aware that this printer (and Canons in general) are sometimes a nightmare to install on W7, and I've checked out a number of solved threads without success.

The printer isn't detected when plugged in via USB (only port available, no serial), and no amount of installing seems to work - there's nothing on the Canon USA site, and the installer from Canon Europe doesn't do anything (even when running under Vista compatibility mode, as suggested).

I've downloaded a set of drivers off Microsoft Update Catalogue, which has worked for someone else (in Canon S520 printer driver), but now I have a bunch of dlls, gpds etc, with no idea where to put them, as there's no installer as such. Can anyone help? I've been having dramas with this printer for about five years : P...ta!

A:Manually installing drivers - location in W7? Help!

To manually install a driver you have to point windows to a .inf file. It may not be the answer you want to hear. But the last time I went to buy cartridges for an old printer I found a new printer (with cartridges) was about the same price as replacements for the old one. Maybe it's time for an upgrade

Hello there
I know that most updates can be installed manually by issuing the command pkgmgr /ip /
In the recommended updates section, there are 2 updated drivers for my soundcard and video card.
if I download the cab file manually and try to install it using this method, it won't work.
Next I tried extracting the cab file using winrar and installing the driver via the device manager. The driver installed correctly, but when I next went to check for updates, it still showed the driver in the list of optional updates.
Is there a correct way of installing the driver manually?

A:installing device drivers manually?

Why are you doing it like that ?

Just download the correct most recent drivers and install them, that`s what I consider manual.

Depending on the card, you should be getting the video drivers directly from nvidia or amd

An Intel driver for the graphics on a cpu can be done using windows update.

I'm having a weird sort of problem. Whenever I plug in a USB device like a mouse or USB flash drive, Windows Vista claims that it cannot find drivers for it!! I have to specify to look in the c:\windows\system32 folder (inc. sub dir) to find the generic drivers for it and it will eventually install. I know Windows XP did not prompt me to look for the drivers manually for these devices, it just installed it automatically. Like it automatically looked in the system32 folder for the drivers and installed them right away. Is this the new trend for Vista now?? I am logged in as a user with administrative rights would it need to run as administrator to work? Or is there a way to tell Vista to look in the windows\system32 folder automatically to search for USB devices? I just it's a nuissance to keep manually installing usb drivers that XP was able to install without user intervention. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Okay so I was downloading something from the net today and my download speed suddenly dropped to nil. Now I can't download but surprisingly can browse at a decent speed. Very strange problem
What I did to resolve the problem:-
 Restarted my router
Changed back my DNS to default (I know DNS has nothing to do with download speeds, but I had to try)
Tested downloads and uploads on but was unsuccessful. Sometimes the tests time out or sometimes it stops just before the download is about to happen and after the ping test has already happened. The ping was around 250ms, if that helps
I tried downloading something again and initially the speed was around 100KBps but then quickly dropped to 0. (I have a 2mbps connection, so normal download speed is around 250KBps)
I even tried downloading something on the mobile from the play store and surprisingly the app did get downloaded, though at a very slow speed of about 18-25KBps
I then tried testing the net on the mobile via the speedtest app but again I was unsuccessful
Just to make sure that nothing was wrong with the OS or the laptop, I made a hotspot on the mobile and connected the laptop the hotspot. Well, it worked flawlessly
So guys, what do you think might be the problem here? Is it from the ISP's end or is the problem on my end? I could have contacted them, but since today is Sunday, no one would be there.
P.S Well one thing i forgot to add was that I uninstalled IDM and a mes... Read more

Hi, I hope I am posting to the correct forum.

Without going into too much detail for security reasons, my employer is giving me the opportunity to work from home in another country.

The work that I do involves reading imaged documents, so working from home is no big deal. The documents can be quite lengthy though.

Essentially I will log into an https:// web address, which then displays a Virtual Desktop duplicate of my work desktop. I can log on anywhere I can access a wirelss internet, even at Mcdonalds.

All the applications I run are installed on the Virtual Desktop including Outlook, Word, Excell etc. So I am logged onto the internet and can open a fresh internet session on my Virtual Desktop. I think the application I will be using is XP VDI.

Anyway to work from home, I need to have a broadband internet connection. The country I will be working from doesn't appear to have unlimited broadband (except for businesses at a hefty price), so I need to get a capped plan.

I am trying to decide what size cap I need.

I am told by my IT department that there will be no actual downloads. The servers transfer the files to my Virtual Desktop and I read from there. They estimate 50-60 bits/s (22-27 mb per hour)

Can anyone please confirm that their assumptions are correct?

So, I don't really know any details of what malware I may have on my computer other than its symptoms and the likelihood that it came through utorrent (which has since been taken off the computer). Basically, the problem began manifesting itself with the BSOD in Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I think I have taken care of that problem. The remaining symptoms of the malware are that windows and windows defender cannot update itself. Also, I cannot download any type of anti-virus update software or even the programs themselves. The updates just say they were unsuccessful. When I attempt to do a manual install/update of anti-virus or windows updates I get a "cannot connect to webpage". Sometimes, I will be redirected from an anti-virus download site to a random unaffiliated site. When I attempt to run a free online virus scan, the update will not work and therefore there is no ability to scan.

Thanks for whatever help you can offer. Eric

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:

AMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3

A:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:
Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.
You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... You got the process right, if it's proper driver it should install, no problem. For some drivers (that support that) you can also right click on appropriate *.*.INF file and choose "Install", it could save some work.

When I click on download .. normal download box opens but nothing in the 'download To' or' Transfer rate' fields. Eventually they time out and drop.
The top bar of download window shows 0% and does not change.

And nothing is ever downloaded.

Tried several sites nothing will download.
It has however downloaded many windows updates and installed them, so it must be able to get data OK..

Only thing other than standard install is after OS loaded I moved the default user profile location (as per tech doc here)
I have tried different ports on router .. and even swapped ports & cables of PC's that are working ... still dame .. browses happily, but no downloads.

First thing I want to download is anti-virus ... cant even download Kaspersky file.

I use Windows XP Service Pack 3 (32-bit) and am running IE8 (have also tried firefox). Black Westell modem with 5 lights, Style MSTATEA - and I do not use a wireless router.
My parents gave me this computer a little over a month ago after purchaseing a new one and it worked perfectly fine at their house and the first day after I had the internet turned on here, but the problems started as soon as I tried to browse the internet the second day. Facebook,, hotmail, ikea and a multitude of other pages will not load properly. Anytime I try to go to these websites the page either timesout or I get the error message "Internet Exploer Can Not Display the Webpage - It apperars you are connected to the Internet, but you might want to try to reconnect, Retype to address, go back to the previous page" etc.. on the rare occasion when facebook does load I can't make it any further than my home page (and certainly can't open any link ie:messages, comments etc.) before the same thing happens. I use this interent connection to play XBox LIVE (I run the ethernet cord dirrectly to the XBox when I want to play) I am also having problems with selecting downloading (somethings will download some won't - windows automatic updates no longer works and I can not download updates for my antivirus) I have contacted ATT and have a new modem so i'm positive I haven't gotten 2 bad ones, they have also taken me through the process of checking everything to do with the connection, and... A:can't browse & download from IE8 OR Firefox

Hi gavinsmommy1019 and welcome to TSF.

Sounds like you have tried quite a bit so far.

Can you check you Device Manager for any warnings (yellow exclamation points) next to anything.
Right click on 'My Computer' and select 'Manage'. In the Computer Management window, select 'Device Manager' on the left and look for any warning signs.

Also, it may be worth re-installing your network (LAN) driver again. You should try to get this directly from the PC's manufactures site instead of updating via Device Manager.

Have you tried using different cables to connect with. Could be a faulting ethernet cable.

You should also try running WinSox Fix as that helped me out when I was running XP sometimes.

You may want to check, but on my Vista I don't see any new add-on and I don't even have C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Search Enhancement Pack folder. As part of its regular Patch Tuesday, Microsoft released an update for its various toolbars, and this update came with more than just documented fixes. The update also installs an add-on for Internet Explorer and an extension for Mozilla Firefox, both without the user's permission. As you can see in the Windows Update screenshot above, Microsoft does not indicate that the update will install anything for either browser. It's also not really clear what the installed extension actually does.

A:Microsoft hides mystery Firefox extension in toolbar update As part of its regular Patch Tuesday, Microsoft released an update...

Thanks Broni for the information. As for Firefox can't I just delete the extension. Let us all see which company gits back to B/C with some sort of answer.

I am downloading the update manually. Have others had the same issue with windows update not showing the update?

I'm not sure my WU is working because of this.

A:Windows Update does not download and install the anniversary update.

My Windows XP is installed on a 250GB SATA harddrive on a Silicon Image SiI3112 Sata Controller onboard my ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe motherboard. I recently downloaded the latest XP drivers for the controller, but when I went t update them from Device Manager, it didn't recognize them as valid drivers. Stupidly I chose the driver manually, and installed them. After restarting the computer I get the BSOD even when trying to enter into Safe Mode. I tired doing a repair of the Windows Installation and using a floppy to load an older version of the drivers. The reinstallation went without a hitch, but once I restarted after the install the BSOD was still there. I would rather not reformat my machine. I have a USB cable to access all my files off the harddrive from another machine. Is there any way to manually replace the driver files on the harddrive with an older version that does work? The files in the downloaded driver package are as follows:

Thanks in advance.

A:Driver Boot Issue; Manually Replace Drivers?

Yes there is. In fact I just did this because I had a non-working keyboard/mouse due to the wrong driver installed and the only way to resolve this was delete the driver whilst on a different drive.

You can delete the driver in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers directory. It will be trial and error though and you won't be able to fully reinstall the previous driver, since the information is in the installation registry and the INF files. It may be enough to bootup though, we'll see. Hovering over each driver or just going off the initials will lead you to find the correct driver.

Look for the xxxx.sys files mentioned above in there and when you find them, remove them to the desktop. Replace each one with the respective older version file into that directory and see if it works.

Let us know how that goes.

I need to know if anyone can help me find Canon "mf drivers" in my laptop. I am trying to re-install Canon MF3240 printer. It's telling me "an older version of mf drivers exists in this computer. uninstall the older version of mf drivers, and then try to install again." There is no canon folder on my machine anymore. I can not follow the --all programs-canon-mf drivers instruction anymore! Need to manually find it. Please help!

A:How to find and manually delete "mf drivers" from my hard drive?

When such happens with's often because a process left behind by the uninstall effort...still relates to removed hardware.
I'd take a look, using a Speccy snapshot.
Please follow the directions at Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - .
