Windows OEM 32-bit bought by accident, need 64-bit DVD

Q: Windows OEM 32-bit bought by accident,need 64-bit DVD

Hi.

I got an OEM version of Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit with my PC, which is capable of 64-bit.

I've read that the serial key is legal for either version, 32-bit or 64-bit, but the DVD I got only has 32-bit version.

How can I get a new DVD with the 64-bit version, as I got 8 gigs of ram and I can't use them.

I bought and built the computer myself and made a mistake when I ordered Windows, and asked for 32-bit because I was scared of compatibility, and I opened and installed it already, so I can't take it back.
Help

A: Windows OEM 32-bit bought by accident,need 64-bit DVD

You can try contacting whoever supplied you with the 32bit disc and explain your mistake... they may send you a new 64bit one... You may just have to bite the bullet and purchase the 64bit version...

Hello, hope someone can help. I recently purchased a hp envy 15 with windows 8.1. I purchased office 2013 and when i opened microsoft one note i was asked for my microsoft account info. I created one, entered the information, walked away from my laptop for a bit. When i came back it was locked and my microsoft account is now my login for the computer. I do not know my password and have been unable to get it from microsoft live. What can i do to log in this is extremely frustrating that i am locked out. Thanks

A:locked myself out of hp envy 15 windows 8.1 by accident

Should be an option to "switch" accounts. Not having an HP Envy 15 I'm not sure on how to tell you to get there. I would try pressing the Windows Key + L key to lock the computer, and when you press a key to gain access, there should be an option to switch user accounts or an arrow ping back...which may or may not take you to a screen that will let you use another account to unlock the computer. Good luck.

When doing a windows xp update recently, I selected all the updates to be done, some were non critical, but I did them anyway. Since then my screen is displaying very small & strange fonts, icons are small, etc. I tried to change the screen resolution & sizes but it is still distorted. I think I updated a driver that I should not have & don't know how to get my display back to normal. Any ideas? Thanks.

Instead of sending the activation code to my sign-in email, it was sent to my reserve email, which no longer exists on the system, I sent the new telephone number, this has been changed, but I am still not able to open any of my Office applications. Yet
I will be charged the renewal from the date I put in the product key. When one has a product key and then signs in to Live, why does this then not activate? Why when you have changed to my new telephone number, have you not sent me an activation code? With
my reserve email dead, you do not allow me to change it. The only other email I use is Gmail, they are much better than Windows Live, I only use Windows Live to allow me to put new programmes onto my computer, and as usual ten days later I have no use of the
programme I bought. So typically Windows. I have used you since the day you began, what went wrong? You used to function once. These last years have been hell. I wish I had bought an Apple computer and changed everything to Apple. Each time I buy a new laptop
these same issues come up. Please give me access to the Windows Office 365 I bought and put on my computer.

Okay so I just bought the student discount of Windows 7. I also ordered the back up disk.

Right now I have Vista 32 bit and I want to go to Windows 7 64 bit. So I understand I have to do a clean (custom) install. My question is, do I have to wait until my disk arrives to do this, or can I do it right now? Because I'm at the page where I ordered my stuff and there's a link to download for the upgrade, but then there's also an alternate link for clean installation and it says it's for XP users and Vista 32 bit users. But it also says ISO burning software is required.

What is ISO burning software, and is it possible for me to do the clean download to 64 bit right now by clicking on that link, or do I have to wait until my back up disk arrives?

A:Just bought Windows 7 I have question

Use this to burn ISO to DVD or write to flash stick: Windows 7 USB-DVD Download Tool
Boot the Windows 7 installer, choose Custom Install, then Drive Options (Advanced) to Delete all partitions not needed, following illustrated steps given here: Clean Install Windows 7

If you Delete all partitions to create New ones and Format, the installer will issue a 100mb System Reserved boot partition which conveniently places the Repair Console (normally only on the DVD or Repair CD) on the F8 Advanced Boot Options menu. Partition as you wish and Format before installing to first OS partition.

The installer is mostly driver-complete, with newer arriving quickly via optional Windows Updates. Just in case, have your Wireless driver on flash stick or CD so you can get online quickly. Then enable hardware driver auto-updating and check for optional Updates frequently.

Any drivers still missing in Device Manager can be found on the Support Downloads webpage for your model computer or device. Driver Install - Device Manager

Install updates and then programs slowly over time to gauge performance changes after each. Don't let any programs write themselves into msconfig>Startup as they slow startup, become freeloaders on your RAM/CPU and can spy on you. I only allow AV and gadgets. Startup Programs - Change

Use a lightweight free AV like MS Security Essentials which works perfectly with Windows 7 Firewall. http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

I have an old Toshiba A200 PSAF6A-0SQ01N (from Australia) which has been confirmed
by Toshiba Australia to be comparable to EU model PSAE6E for drivers (just background info).
The laptop has Win Vista installed.

I bought a new Win 7 pro key with download of Windows via ebay and burned it to DVD.
Next , I shutdown windows and turned it on pressing "0" to get recovery and wiped
the HDD (but left the recovery partition on the HDD). Windows 7 pro installed without
probs and I included all necessary drivers.

Just to double check before activation - is there anything I need to do before activation
or is there something special that has to be done due to the Vista key from factory install ?

A:Activation of new windows 7 OEM pro key I bought

When you install own Windows version it has nothing to do with original recovery image and you can activate it whenever you want. Install all necessary drivers, tools and utilities and I’m pretty sure everything will be OK. I have installed Win7 on P200 without any problems.

The only thing is that now, after Win7 installation you will not be able to install original Vista from the partition. Original recovery image can be installed with recovery discs (DVD) only.

Win7 works perfectly on this old machine so, generally speaking, you don’t need Vista anymore.

Hello JakozIII, Welcome to TSF!

That CD should be ok to install as a 'clean' installation.
However, I would telephone the nearest Microsoft Support Centre to confirm that you will not have validation issues.
Just explain to them that you are only studying in Japan and you are not taking up permanent residency in that country.
Hopeful this explains the situation a bit clearer.

A:bought a new mobo, windows won't boot

Changing something like a motherboard can cause this type of issue. XP is expecting the same hardware and you've changed it.

A repair install using an XP CD may get things working again but you can always access your files with a boot disc of some kind.

Linux Live, BartPE or Symantec Ghost all will allow you to at least get to your files and copy them to a thumb drive or something similar.

Hi.

I bought a used laptop via craigslist about 2 months ago. Its a Dell Latitude E6400. Anyways, the guy I bought it from had clean installed Windows 7 Ultimate on it, however, he gave me a selfburnt DVD and a hand written product key. This looked suspicious to me but he explained that he lost the Windows box while moving. He showed me that the windows was activated and all, and it being a good deal.. I took it

I have been using it for the past 2 months and no problems yet. Now I want to give this Laptop to my parents who live in another city and are not at all tech savvy, so I don't want that one day they call me up to tell me the Windows showing that it is not genuine. So can you guys tell if this is a genuine copy? If not, I have the OEM Vista that came with it and a Vista product key sticker behind the battery, and I can install that. But I don't want the hassle if Windows 7 is genuine.

Also what does the "Remaining Windows rearm count: 4"mean?

A:Bought a used laptop, is my Windows 7 Genuine?

First the rearm count in the registry shows if the 7 installation wasn't already activated you could extend the trial period. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...-120-days.html

If you have checked for Windows updates during the last two months and they installed witout any program or prompting for the WGA the original disk the previous owner had was the genuine while the other... is considered "casual copying".(not the best situation for you) You may want to consider buying your own disk as far as that is concerned.

To save on price you can opt for an upgrade disk of the same edition since you are planning to pass the pc along. Refer to Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

Hi there, I am installing a new motherboard, CPU, and video card. I bought an OEM version of Windows XP from http://www.royaldiscount.com/miwixphofuve.html#

I will be using the same Hard Drive that this version of Windows XP is installed on. I read that I would need to call microsoft for a new activation key which is normally free.

Will I be able to still use this disc?

I also forgot to mention that I upgraded my HDD some months ago. I basically copied all of the data from my old hard drive onto my new one. The OS worked fine without a reinstall. However, when I tried doing a clean install of Windows XP recently, the partition deletion got to 100% and completed, then Windows XP starting installing. About 3/4 of the way through the installation, 200 Windows XP files couldn't install according to the BIOS (I don't know why the files didn't install any advice would be great). I tried it again and it installed successfully and I was able to re-activate my Windows XP key again.

Hi.  I saved up and bought a pretty good spec computer, almost 2 years ago.  It came with windows 8 already installed in it.  I decided to try to install linux to see how fast it would go on it as I thought reinstalling windows 8 would be easy, But when I installed linux ubuntu it completely wiped the hard drive partitions and I could not reinstall windows 8.  I did not have a clue how to get windows 8 back so I went to ebay and bought ''Windows 8 repair and reinstallation media'' for 10quid.  It worked a treat although when installing it was asking me for my product key.  I could not find the product key in any of the boxes that I got my new computer in, and it was on no stickers on the computer.  So after the install I found a program that could pull the OEM Product key from the BIOS or where ever it was. And it worked a treat.  After this I went to microsoft website and ask them in live chat to confirm if this was my product key and if my windows activation was genuine.  They agreed that it was the right product key my computer came with and everything was genuine.   Lately Ive been a bit paranoid though as I do a lot of online banking and share dealing on my computer - wondering if whoever this random person was who sold me the repair media may have edited some of the windows files on the disc and when it was installing windows could have left it with rootkits or viruses or anything nasty.  Or is that impossible? ... HI guys this is my first post so any help welcome.

I bought a few HP desktops from a bankruptcy auction thinking that they would have Windows installed but I loaded one up and it has this system called ubuntu. This is despite there being a Windows product sticker and validation code on the computer.

So I have the product code but the problem is they were supplied with no disk.

So my 1st question is, how do I install Windows without the disk and remove ubuntu.

My second is what operating system have I bought? The sticker on the PC says Its for Windows 7 Pro but then another sticker below says Windows 7 downgraded to XP Pro.

Many thanks for your time

Ubuntu is Linux. Linux is a free OS. You need a Windows disc to install Windows, there is no other way. You can order a Windows recovery disc for this computer from HP: Looking for HP Recovery Discs or an HP USB Recovery Drive? | HP? Support
Other then that you can purchase the retail version of Windows from Ebay or Craigslist.

My wife and I needed a new computer because our Toshiba Satellite laptop was just too old to be of service anymore. We had a choice between a Mac laptop or a computer with Windows 8. After browsing around we settled on the Sony Vaio SVJ20215CXB. Two reasons: 1) we both do a lot of work with MS Word and PowerPoint and 2) we both have iphones and a ipad and wanted something different because Apple seems to have gotten stale.

After a week of playing with Windows 8 we have some questions that hopefully some fellow W8'ers can assist us or at least give us some tips.

First, what we like about windows 8:
1. Programs run very fast
2. Its a very fast startup
3. Live tiles (on the apps that have them) are a plus
4. The Metro screen is like your cluttered desktop from XP but only simplified and exciting
5. The integration between SkyDrive and W8 is great. Very easy to work on a document at work, upload to SkyDrive and work on it at Home and then re-upload it from home so its at your work the next morning. I find Dropbox too buggy and haven't had any annoying issues with Skydrive.

However, here are some problems we have:
1. How do we make the apps split the screen so that we can multitask? (like work on a word doc and check email at the same time?)

2. The integration between the old desktop and the metro is bad. (for example in W8 there are a few pc settings but have to go back to the old desktop to find the rest of the settings. Likewise with documents, if you want a folder to stor... Read more

Right now this is not yet possible. You can move one app to the right or left corner so that you have two open apps with a 20% vs 80% split. But.... this summer the Windows 8.1 (aka Blue) update is coming. And this update will give you the possibility to put 2 or even 4 apps in a splitscreen setup.
So just be patient for a few more months.

I bought a used netbook on Ebay. It was originally supposed to come with W7 Starter, but the seller installed W7 home premium 64. I want to do a clean reinstall, using the current CD key, BUT ONLY IF IT IS LEGIT. Here are some facts and questions:

It has the W7 Starter sticker and key. So that means I am at least entitled to that right? Can I clean install that with the code on the sticker plus a "universal" W7 iso? Or must I order recovery cd's from Acer. (There is no recovery partition)

I have bought Samsung N128 netbook. It comes with DOS so i need to install OS.I'm confused between XP and Windows 7.Which one would be better for fast and smooth operation.I have never used windows 7 and am quite used to XP from a long time.Help me decide between the two.
Thanks.

A:I've just bought a netbook and confused between XP and Windows 7

Check the manufacturer's web site to see which OS has drivers. Otherwise, it won't work properly.

It appears that some people are running XP, though it seems a shame to use a 10-year-old OS on a new machine.

Hi all

Im no computer wizz, i know enough to get by but i recently bought a seagate barracude 500gb harddrive (7200.12) for my computer. When i first connected the device to my computer i got a hardware failure massage on boot up, i did a little bit of research and found it to be because the mother board i am using ( ASUS K8V-X) cant handle the data transfer rate (dont quote me on that) so i shorted the 2 pins on the rear of the device and "hey presto" no more hardware failure when i boot, however neither the BIOS nor windows XP can detect the device.

I know the device is on because when i try to turn the hard drive i get the 'gyro effect' resistance, iv tried multiple data and power cables and nothing seems to work.

Any help in this matter would be appriciated.

You shouldn't lose any programs you have access to when you boot XP-Pro, but anything you have under XP-Home will be history when you delete that installation.

I recently bought a new PC;

I have only had this for 4 days and have already had 5 blue screens, they have occurred with different programs running so i don't see a connection that way. The files that may help identify the problem are;

We really need the actual DMP file.

If you wish to have others assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder. The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Start your own thread in the "Crashes and Debugging" section of the forum and attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
* Briefly describe the problem history and circumstances in the same post. Somebody will attend to your query as soon as possible.

I bought the computer from my tattoo artist and got a fair deal on it. Its brand new and everything is fine but the finger print scanner wont work and sometimes a window pops up about not having a genuine copy of windows, it also came with the start up disks but I cant figure out how to restore it to just the way it should be when you buy it. Long story short im not extremely tech savvy and I would like to just revamp the computer. Get the correct software installed, copy of windows, the whole nine yards. How would I go about doing that so in my case I would have the perfect computer? Its going to be used mostly for games and music. Have 500 gb also.

A:Bought a new windows latitude e6430 but it doesnt have all it needs

Yes in your case you need to make sure you had all of the disc to restore the system as you would have received it new with all the correct drivers an etc. Check with DELL to make sure you have all what you need. This model you have is there business line so built to stand the extreme work force pounding. Heavier but still very good laptop.

Drive is a Western Digital Caviar Blue (WD10EALX) 1TB.

Computer is a Gateway FX7026.

I've removed both my old drives, only the new drive is connected. I did a clean, custom install.

I keep getting the message:

"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. this computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. esnsure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."

I know it isn't my hardware, because I tried this with the exact same model of HDD before, I installed Windows 7 successfully on that one, but I had to return the last one because it was unstable and had bad sectors etc. and probably would've broken soon or later, so I returned it and got the same drive, but this one can't even install Windows 7.

A:Installing Windows 7 on newly bought drive

Have you checked in BIOS setup to see that the HD is recognized? While there also check that SATA controller is set to AHCI mode first to try install. If it fails, try IDE mode.

I have a 240GB SSD so I like to be careful about space allocated to my games. With Steam games it is easy to just copy the game folder to an external HD when I'm not playing it then moved it back when I fancy playing it.

However, I purchased Rise of the Tomb Raider from the Windows Store and that option doesn't seem doable - the game installed itself into a folder inside C:/Program Files/WindowsApps which isn't viewable unless I taken ownership (I already messed up all my metro apps doing this but fortunately I had a recent disk image to recover from it).

Does anyone know of a way to either change the location of the game installation or an easy way to backup and restore the game files?

A:How do I backup a game bought via Windows Store?

I may have actually just solved this myself, sorry!

http://i.imgur.com/x0zuIyz.png

It seems like I can move the game install back and forth between drives as and when I want.

Shame it means the game has to stay "installed" in some fashion but that's a minor niggle.

I'm in the process of re-downloading the game so I'll test it and see if it works before I mark thread as solved.

Hello I'm very glad to be part of this form. I've always referred to this site for troubleshooting and and just recently became a member.

I always repair family or friends pcs such as remove malware, which the usual repair due to registry errors/worms. Which occasionally they decide to format an reinstall windows all together. When they are without a recovery partition.

Overview.
I want to be able to have every version of windows to be able to reinstall on any make of pc using their own product key (sticker on case). Say if Im reinstalling on Dell windows xp Home sp3. Can I use bought version of xp home sp3 and still use their product key?

Question.
To have all copies should I get all bought versions or all recovery versions to use their own product key?

Thanks for all opinions and again I am very proud to be a member of this forum.

A:Recovery CDs or bought versions for windows reinstall?

and the answer is nope .. stickers behind the laptop back or desktop/s are usually for the dvd/cd/s which is from factory or from someone who has a dealor ship
its called OEM keys

all the sticked need their OEM software cd dvd

so if your sticker says windows xp professional sp2 key then you must have a widnows xp professional sp2 OEM verison of the cd retail verisons or vlk cd/dvd will not work with OEm version of the stickers ..

so dell,hp.toshiba, compaq, acer, or any other xp pro sp2 laptop /desktop stickers needs winows xp pro sp2 oem cd/dvd.

sorry for my english but purchased cd from anywhere will only work with one key given while purchase .

I bought my laptop late summer last year so I was elligible to be sent the upgrade version of Windows 7 (paying only the postage). My issue is that although I have a 64-bit processor, I was sent a 32-bit version of Windows 7. Diid everyone get the 32-bit version regardless of their processor type? I had to register the computer I'm using, so the processor-type ought to have been in their database?

A:Free Windows 7 upgrade if Vista PC is bought = 32-bit?

Your computer is capable of handling 64 bit, it is not have a 64 bit processor. You can use 32 bit on any computer, although some memory may be wasted.

When you buy an OS, you are mainly paying for the key, not the DVD. You may want to call MS and see if you can get a DVD for cost plus a little more. You may, also want to contact your vendor to see if he can help.

You were probably sent 32 bit because you had 32 bit alreaday installed. If it was an upgrade DVD, you cannot upgrade from 32 to 64, you must do a clean install. Note, however a clean install can be done with an upgrade DVD.

Wish you luck

Can I use my laptop Windows 7 code on a new desktop I just built, as I bought a separate independent Windows 8 Disk set (32/64) from Amazon for the laptop last month and it runs great now?

(i.e. a Windows 7 OS of mine is going unused; and I need an OS for my new desktop) (only a few days till Activation day)

Or

Should I wipe my laptop hard drive and install the windows 7 on that and re-register the Windows 8 for my new desktop.

I mean Are Microsoft so bothered about which of my computers which OS is on?

I just dont want to mess about too much; MS caused me hundreds of hours of difficulties already; over the years (anyone remember the MS Office smashing documents all over the place when Office 2007 autosaved open Office Word 2000 Docs??). Weeks of destroyed documents I had to fix or lose and re-write (hundreds of pages) until a fix/update came along.

A:Can I use my laptop Windows 7 code elsewhere now I bought Windows 8?

If the laptop came preinstalled with Windows 7 is most likely a OEM which is tied to that laptop motherboard if that is the case then no you cannot transfer it to your new build, if it is a retail version of Windows 7 then you can.

As you said you have installed Windows 8 on it did you buy a retail or a OEM copy of Windows 8?

If you installed and activated the Windows 8 and it is an OEM it is most likely tied to the laptop now also so you may not be able to wipe the laptop and put it on the new build.

So, my computer was acting really strange, and I decided I should just go ahead and buy a fresh copy of Windows 7.

So after I purchased it, I wanted to download it online and get a fresh install, once I hit download 32 bit version and said to save it here and download it the only thing that I can tell something is downloading is on the browser page where the "download" button is now replaced with 2 spinning arrows... but thats it, no % done or ETA. Is there a way I can check to see if this is downloading and can I even do a fresh install via online downloading?

A:Bought Windows 7 online and i dont understand how to work it

It's been a long time since I've downloaded Windows 7. If I remember correctly they by default try to get you to install a download manager to help with the download. You may be seeing this because UAC is asking if you want to allow the install. Sometimes UAC pops up in the background unnoticed. Or if you are using IE it may be asking if you want to install an activex component. I would investigate these first. Good luck.

I bought windows 7 ultimate license on-line for good price. the seller said only phone activation.

however it did activate by phone. i started wondering why only phone activation.

I looked at licence by slmgr it shows retail channel.

is this legitimate copy and can i activate on-line the next time??

why only phone activation?

I updated the KB971033 and still activated.

A:Bought windows 7 used licence, activation only by phone! is it legit?

You can determine this with certainty by calling MS Customer service. This helps because once they verify it you have a permanent record of that for any reinstalls and they'll task Support to get it activated no matter what. Retail can migrate and reinstall as often as you want as long as it's only on one PC at a time. Phone activation sometimes is required if there's doubt about that, with a series of numbers traded to update the hardware ID associated with the key. When they ask how many PC's its installed upon the only correct answer is "One" after which they take that as permission to deactivate it on any other device which hardware ID had been associated with it.

We saw tons of bad eBay licenses, so I'd confirm its validity now in case it loses activation so you can file for PayPal refund or challenge the charge with your bank. It is a crime to sell phony or pirated software keys, and MS will sometimes award you with a free copy if you cooperate into an investigation where you lose money.

I bought a Windows 7 Pro (32 & 64 bit) full retail version thinking that it was the real thing (because everything about it looked like it was the real Microsoft product, plus it was sealed). When I installed it I tried to activate it at once and got the following message: "the product key you typed cannot be used to activate windows on this computer." Re-entered the product key several times just to be sure I typed it correctly, still the same message. I called Microsoft here in the Philippines (or probably their office in Asia) and the agent asked for the product key to be verified. Turned out it has already been used since 2012. The agent told me that there are counterfeits that could look as good as the real thing. She advised me to have it replaced or refunded. My problem is that I don't know if the store will allow it. I think I remember them saying they have a no refund policy. And if they replace it, it could very well be another counterfeit. Is there any way to hold them responsible? Thanks in advance for any help.

A:I bought windows 7 that looked genuine but turned out to be pirated

Try to return and refund it and say the key is already been used and show them proof, If they don't then you can go ahead and call OMB so you can have a talk with them about this.

Can ANYONE please help me fix this possible debacle?

Long story with my sister inlaw her daughter messed up the usb ports by jamming one to hard and now nothing plugged into the usb ports would work. I uninstalled the usb hubs that were in device manager but not the host controllers. I then turned the computer off and put the pci card in and restarted. right away the computer started reconizing USB ports and I thought alright its working-----------wrong. In device manager now it reinstalled the ones that I had uninstalled and installed the new ones. So now there are the original ones and the host controllers for them and then the new usb hubs and the new host things or what ever they are for it. Hi,

Does anyone know if a store-bought Windows 10 can be used to upgrade a Vista system?

A:Can a Store-bought Windows 10 upgrade a Vista system?

You may need to check with your manufacturers website (Dell, Acer, etc) to see if there are any drivers available for your computer for Windows 10. If no drivers are available then you won't be able to upgrade to Windows 10.

Hi! Let me explain this frustrating and silly problem...

I bought an Acer laptop running windows 8 maybe few months ago. Everything were fine. Absolutely no problem at all. but then...

I left my laptop running for the night. (forgot to close it) but when i woke up, he show me a ''no boot device detected, please insert a boot device and restart'' screen. My first question was why? You were working fine! So i try to look up for the problem but i did not find any answer... or even someone else who experienced the same problem. I try using the recovery back i've made, went into the screen where you can load the driver, add partition, format partition, etc. But the hard disk is not showing. Like if the laptop never had a hard drive. I did not make any internal or external change at all since i have it. Its like if the hard disk can randomly kill himself without any reason. I have some experience in computer but i'm not a mastermind. So i need help please. If you need any extra information i'll add them. As i said, according to my search, it seems i'm the first one experiencing this so i don't know exactly which information need to be known.

A:No boot device on newly bought Windows 8 laptop

I have a little update on my situation.

After messing around on internet and the internal command prompt, i found something... odd.
The main hard drive where the windows were initially installed (C doesn't exist anymore... I generated a list of list of basic and dynamics volumes which are installed using command prompt but nothing... The only one appeared was my USB key, which contained the backup installation i'm running on. And that same USB key took the letter C:
So, to make it short: Hard drive randomly died and he erased every bit of existence in my computer.

Its getting worse... :S

Hi there. I bought an eMachines computer off of Newegg, and when I plug in the internet through the ethernet cord it does not work. Wireless however does. I've called the manufacturer and they said they cannot help whatsoever.

In device manager when it's only the ethernet cord there's no Network Adapater, and Windows Update has nothing. Currently I'm using my girlfriend's wireless to post this (as I do for online games).

Please help?

Morning,
My last computer was hit by a few different virus over the 4 year span of having it, now that I have a new unit, I would like to be proactive to prevent future intrusions.  I currently run Webroot (which came with the computer and expires in 6 months) but will have access to free Norton with my comcast service after that.  Does windows 10 have built in firewall/other that I should be comfortable with?  Should I run certain programs every so often (cleanup, malware bytes etc) to keep things running smooth?  In summary, I would like to know if I am properly protected and then what are best practices to prevent future issues. Thanks so much for the consideration.

As I said in the tilted this is my first ever experience with a windows tablet and it certainly is beyond my expectations that I had!
I'm super excited writing my first post with this great little device!
Currently is running W8.1 and I have glued in the right hand a pencil which is working flawlessly with the device as a stylus :D
On the left of IE (where I'm writing right now) I have open tubecast where I play some funky music from the surprisingly nice front facing speakers to go along with the experience :p
The keyboard is WAY better than I expected it to be and the screen is crisp and clear with awesome colors and top notch brightness.
The little machine is performing 86 updates in the background and I haven't seen even the slightest lag thus far :)
Sorry guys I just can't contain my excitement as it is above and beyond even the greatest expectations I had!!
I bought it mainly for media consumption as my Lumina 730 doesn't have a big enough display in order to enjoy videos neither a great pair of speakers to rump up the experience!
Also I've seen that battery life is top nots with 10+ hours of media consumption but I have to test it overtime to see how it fairs with my use..
Also I'm planning to install windows 10 (on the first install it prompt to download windows 10) but I'm gonna wait for the threshold 2 (aka November update) because the RTM version is extremely barebones..
Guys, if you have any question I'm here!

A:Today I bought my first windows tablet!! (Lenovo Yoga 2 8 inch)

Yeah I'll be extremely careful with the updates, I will only install official releases because both my desktop and phone are running the preview builds so I don't want another concern in my mind :p
Have you seen any noticeable change (for the worse) of the battery standby on windows 10?
Because I'm kinda scared to upgrade it because of all the problems I see daily on this site :p

For the record: I am Win98 and ME certified and knowledgeable with DOS.
I am a 'shift-del' freak and was cleaning my desktop, 3 weeks ago and accidentally included my coin logs(I've been working on these for 3.5 years). Being an XP user and knowing XP doesn't use DOS, I thought there was no chance of getting them back; I just found out I was wrong and with the proper tools I can. I never did this before, but so need to. Please help.

UPDATE: A friend referred me to "recuva" yoake a recovery, of about 15 files(MSWord), I got back 2 and one was my buff(buffalo coin) logs. However later I discovered;both files will not open. Windows says, "word cannot find compressor for..." I'm clueless here. Plus after choosing to unhide all files and folders, I ran into 2 files that have the names I lost; but they begin with "~$", only have 1K and the icon is light colored. What is this? Any chance of recovery nof these 4 and others.?

there are quite a lot of recovery programs available

I have used www.z-a-recovery.com a digital camera free recovery on the site and recovered 100 images off a CF card , so i know some of these work well

From a Elvandil Post
Here's a list. If the free ones don't see anything, forget the pay ones. I know Pandora is still around and has updated recovery software. And the other day, someone used the Disk Investigator at the bottom, which is meant to show you how much stuff is still on your drive after you thought you cleaned it, and they managed to get all their files back. Dr. Freeware is pretty new and updated not too long ago, with other useful tools, too.

Here's the list, anyway (I have more if you run out ):

Hi everyone.

I am having a very similar issue as OP, but I "accidentally" [STUPID ME.....] did diskpart/clean (only clean) on a remote HD (149Ghz size with no partition on it).

I am still reading through this thread and hopefully I will be able to recover my data on this remote HD. I have been using TestDisk, EaseUS partition recovery to scan (only quick scan so far) w/o any luck yet. At this moment I am running Partition Recovery quick scan now. Since I do not have any partition on this HD, I am not sure if I am doing the right thing.... I only store pictures (tons of them) and some docs on it. I am on Page 9 of this thread, I will keep reading and trying.

Thanks in advance for helping me,
Lucy

When I was reformatting my computer i deleted a part of my drive that i think was really important. It was drive E:. After the reformatting I tried to go on the internet. I tried to go on wireless but, I didn't have a wireless internet icon for my wireless card so I plugged it in. Still i could not go on the Internet. Then I tried to open some programs and half of them would load the others I would get error reports from.
I think the reason it doesn't work is because of the drive I accidently deleted. Is there any way that I could get the data back without taking it to a repair shop? Thanks for any help. Oh and I cant put my laptop on standby either.

Hi all,

I'm not pc savvy at all so this message comes with a tad bit of panic!

My mother accidently hit "log off" instead of restart using windows XP. Now she gets a blue screen that says "Welcome" on the left and my family's name with a chess board icon on the right. There's a button on the bottom that says "turn off family computer". We cannot get to the desk top no matter what we try. We can only shut it down. We think she hit log off-- since it's a family computer we never use this function. Can anyone tell me how to get back to the desktop? (she's quite upset because we're not sure what happened exactly, and not sure what to do)

ANY help or suggests are welcome! Thanks much!

General Info

Windows 8 pro

Cant do anything on computer
using a different laptop right now

I was in regedit trying to delete an instant savings app that had found its way into my computer. I believe i was in Local_Users and i know i went to the software folder. I accidentally deleted the software folder and I couldnt use any programs. I couldnt use a system restore because it gave me an error so i decided to reboot and go into safe mode and do it there but it didnt work. I have been trying to figure all of this out with windows technicians and didnt get anywhere. I cant do anything on my broken computer because when i boot it up, it skips the boot menu and i cant get it into safe mode or anything. it goes straight to the lock screen and I cant read any texts and can only put in my password. After I put in the password, it gives me a black screen for a few seconds with a blue spinning wheel on my mouse and it goes back to the lock screen. My idea was to load the cd I have with the win8 pro back onto my computer and that would reset the registry but I dont know how to do this because I cant do any functions on my pc at the moment. any help would be great. Sorry for all the bad writing, I am trying to finish a lot of homework and figure out this problem at the same time.

Thank you,

Welcome to TSF.

That's not good. That's the main reason we tell users not to use this program on their own since it can cause damage. Do you have an older log of what you had before you did the fixes? If not, tell us what you fixed if you can remember.

Post your new log you have now and we'll take a look at it. What firewall program are you using?

Today, when I tried to get photos onto my comp by inserting the memory chip into the SD/mini/MMC/RS and the computer wouldn't reconize it. I went to my computer and checked to see if the icons, and none were there.

I tried restarting my comp, but that didn't help.

How do I retrieve the hardware?

A:[SOLVED] Accident

Remove the SD/mini/MMC/RS docking bay and the reinsert it into your PC, this is assuming that the device you inserted the memory chip into is connected through USB.

Folder Lock 7 from newsoftwares.net. I bought it. Installed it. Encrypted a folder. Windows Defender immediately detected the file "Folder Lock Portable.exe" as Trojan:Win32/Mefurac.E!cl with an alert of severe; when you go to open the encrypted folder using the EXE "Folder Lock Portable.exe". Windows Defender included this Trojan in it's definitions in JUNE/2016.
The file "Folder Lock Portable.exe" gets created "on-the-fly" with a creation date & time of the current date & time and gets put into "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp\Folder Lock Portable.exe". The program that creates this file is of the same name located on the drive where you encrypted the file or folder.
I think this program should be removed from Windows Central until it is confirmed "clean". I have submitted the EXE that gets created on-the-fly to several anti-virus vendors and Malwarebytes.
I have got 2 blue screens with this installed of which I've never had with Windows 10 to date. I have removed this program for now until feedback from submissions. I have also contacted newsoftwares.net.

There is a backup copy in C:\Windows\System32\dllcache

most of the time it is compressed in this folder.

Here is a copy of it from my XP installation (uncompressed)
See attached
You will need a XP install CD and use recovery environment to copy the file to the proper place, or use an Ubuntu boot CD to do it.

Here is an article on using a Ubuntu CD to copy data off an unbootable windows PC, one could also use it to copy a file to a Windows folder.

I made a data disc (CD-R) with nero 5.5 (size of data 400mb) and accidently my daughter did another burn (size of data 2mb) on the same disc, her data is there, have I lost mine completely? I seem to recall reading somewhere that there is a program for retrieving the older data?
