Curious numbers

Q: Curious numbers

This is not a problem. Just a curiosity that I am unable to explain. Maybe someone has the answer.

1. When I look into Computer or computer management, the size of my system is about 16.3 GBs. The data is on another partition and there are no restore points - shadowstorage is zero.

2. If, however, I run WinDirStat, it shows my system size as 18.1 GBs. I fail to see from where the additional 1.8 GBs come from.

Hey everybody.

I don't know if the title is a good one for this problem, but here goes.

I have a column that has numbers in this format: 54321-1234

Now, I want to take off the last 4 numbers, and the dash, from all the numbers in the column, using a formula. So that the output would be: 54321.

I want it so the first 5 numbers stay the same, but the dash and last 4 are gone. Is this possible?

Thanks.

This was asked before by KlausdB:

"I have 4 x HDDs on SATA AHCI (Intel Controller) in Native Mode and 1 x ESATA on Win 7 Pro X64.
I noted that looking in Admin. Tools\Computer Management\Storage (as an example) the 1st HDD (Port 0 in the AHCI BIOS) is showing as "Disk 2" instead of my expectation of

"Disk 1".
Selecting the Drive's Properties correctly shows the "Location 0 (Channel 0, Target 0, Lun 0)".
I also note that the Disk Number allocation in Windows will change randomly after some reboots/startups - going anywhere from "Disk 1" to "Disk 4". I can force/replicate this

behaviour by removing the ESATA drive.
Is this expected behaviour?
It doesn't appear to create any operating issues at this stage, however, is there a way I can force the Drive to always map to (eg) Device 0 --> Disk 1, Device 1 --> Disk 2,

etc?
Thanks."

This was answered by Nicholas Li:

"As far as I know, how the disk is plugged physically and the order it is displayed are not related. For a simple example, if a drive is plugged to SATA interface 4 and it is the only disk, it will be displayed as Disk 0. If there is no related issue about
the disk order, I think we can safely ignore this."

I have three SATA hard drives :
Main system/boot drive , WD Caviar Black 1 TB, connected to the SATA 0 port
A backup drive, identical WD Caviar Black 1 TB, connected to the SATA 1 port
Another dirve, Hitachi 1 TB, connected to the SATA 2 port
When I installed Win 7, only the main drive was connected... and it remains the only drive with active/system/boot partitions.

QUESTION 1.
All three drives reporr correctly in the BIOS, and in the right order, but why is it that only one of the drive (the one on SATA port 1) has a "SATA:" prefix and the others have a "HDD:" prefix ?

QUESTION 2,
Why is it that the assignment of Disk #0, 1, 2 ( as seen in Disk Maanger or DiskPart) does not seem to have nay rhyme or reason?

I would have expected:

- the hardrive connected to SATA port O, to be assigned as Disk 0
- the hardrive connected to SATA port 1, to be assigned as Disk 1
- the hardrive connected to SATA port 2, to be assigned as Disk 2

but instead, I have:

- the hardrive connected to SATA port 2, is assigned as Disk 0
- the hardrive connected to SATA port 0, is assigned as Disk 1
- the hardrive connected to SATA port 1, is assigned as Disk 2

Just curious why that is.

I am assuming there is no way to chagne this. Its not something I would dream of reinstalling Windows 7 to correct ( even if it did correct it).

A:SATA port numbers vs assignemnt of Disk numbers/

Best advice, leave it alone. It may bother your (and others) sense of order but it won't affect how anything works, and no re-installing Windows won't change it.

I have Windows XP, with Wordpad v5.1 and Notepad v5.1 as well. In Notepad, if I toggle off Word Wrap, I can then toggle on the Status Bar, and it shows me the line and column number in the status bar. It does not look like Wordpad has the ability to show line and column numbers. Does anyone know if there is a way to show that in Wordpad? Thanks.

I was checking my program and software list and at the top of the list I noticed two (2) sets of numbers that I have never seen before. I checked the internet to see if I could find out what they were. It kept taking me to sites for spyware, adware, etc. I could not find out what they were or why they are on my system. I do not want to remove them until I know what they are. I have not noticed any problems with my system, but I do not know what might be going on behind the sceen. The numbers are listed as follows:
{684CB795-C157-4E15-93D4-E26015FEF1EA}

{F850707C-B6A0-4B56-8709-F89CF8F9AC6D}

Hi,
I have some reference books I use and in all of them I have this problem:

The number written on the document pages doesn't match the number my pdf reader says, and for every document it has a different offset. That is, for example when I go to page 16, then on the page itself it's written that it's page 5 and not 16.

It's an annoying problem.
Is there any way to fix this by changing the pdf numbering or is there any workaround?

Thanks

I am running IE7 - XPPRO - Core2 with 2 gigs Ram and experiencing extremely slow boot times. After reg cleans, defrags, disk cleaning, disable running processes, multi scans with MS Essentials, Panda, MWbytes it is still slow. I have been reading about add ons and have a large amount on this particular computer. 48 under "add-ons that run without permission", 12 that are "currently loaded in IE", 48 that "have been used by IE".

So, here is my question, if I disabled all add-ons would they automatically enable when required?

Hello everyone!

I'm curious about Thunderbird. I use FireFox, and absolutely love it! But should I use Thunderbird? Will it work with my web based email from Comcast? What benefits does it provide?

Any other comments about it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

A:Curious

Thunderbird is what is called an e-mail client, just as Outlook is. Some places refer to these as "graphical interfaces." I have no idea why. I use Thunderbird and find it to be a very nice program. You can set it so that your anti-virus e-mail protection will scan incoming mail, and you can set filtering rules for spam and for mail filing. With Thunderbird and other e-mail clients, your e-mail is downloaded to your computer when you use it. Instead of opening Web-mail, you open Thunderbird. You will need to talk to your e-mail provider to find out how to set up the e-mail client so that you can receive and send messages. There are two basic types of e-mail protocols: IMAP and POP. With the first, the mail stays on the mail server. For example, my university e-mail account is an IMAP type mail, so I can use web-mail when I'm away from home and see my mail, and I can open Thunderbird at home and see my mail. In order for the e-mail client to show you any folders you created in web-mail, you have to subscribe to those folders. With POP mail, any mail that is downloaded to your computer is no longer on the mail server, so when you go to your web-mail, you will see only new mail. I understand that there is a way of making the downloaded mail to go back on the server, but the one webpage I read that described that process no longer has that information on the page. With both kinds of mail protocols you can create local folders in Thunderbird or other e-mail clie... I have a Compaq Presario and my DH and children each have a Dell. DH's puter is on its own power bar and the children's is plugged into my power bar. DH's and my power bars are plugged into two completely separate outlets [assuming this make any difference, which I doubt].

Now, two days ago, the children were brushing their teeth and when I put them to bed, it started thundering faintly. By the time I was done their goodnights, the thunder was louder. I went into our room to tell DH it was thundering and to hurry up - he was in the shower. When I was walking out of the bedroom, the electricity cut out. Of course, I hadn't saved ANYTHING I was working on, , but no big deal.

Anywho, when I came back down, my puter had rebooted and was in the Welcome screen, but both DH's and the children's puter's shut off and stayed off. All 3 puter's were on at the time. So how come mine rebooted and theirs shut down? Not an issue, I'm just curious as to why.

Hello All, I have been checking out forums on here. I am curious about what Hijack this does and how it works? most of all what do you look for in the log afterwards? why do you run this program for anyway? Please enlighten me thanks,(Moderator edit: thread move to more appropriate forum. jgweed)

A:Curious

HijackThis examines certain key areas of the Registry and Hard Drive and lists their contents. These are areas which are used by both legitimate programmers and hijackers. It's up to you to decide what should be removed. Some items are perfectly fine. You should not remove them. Never remove everything. Doing that could leave you with missing items needed to run legitimate programs and add-ins. It does not target specific programs and URLs, only the methods used by hijackers to force you onto their sites. As a result, false positives are imminent, and unless you're sure about what you're doing, you always should consult with knowledgeable folks before deleting anything.

A:Just Curious

These are "cached" favicons. They get deleted when you clear the Internet Explorer temporary cache.

However if you can save one to a permanent folder you have created for them, say in My Documents, you can then select it through the "change icon" menu in the icon properties.

Look for these icons in the C:\Documents and Settings\%UserName%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files folder -- they should have .ico extensions and usually will be visible there. However I've found in XP SP2 this behavior is changed, possibly due to a security update, and the .ico files are not visible any longer.

HI:

This is not a problem as far as function, etc., but I am curious ....

I am using XP Professional. When I open up my register for any hard drive and then open a folder, some of the file names within that folder have blue fonts and others have black fonts. The extension for the files do not seem to make any difference. For example, with files within the same folder having the .jpg extension, some of these file names show up with blue fonts, others are with black fonts so the extension is not the determining factor.

No big deal but I was wondering if anyone could explain the reason or significance of each type??

Thanks,

A friend of mine is having a serious problem with his computer. Regardless of what mode it's booted in, it restarts before loading anything significant. In normal boot mode, it gets to the XP loading screen, then blinks back to startup. In Safe mode, it lists what it's loading, then blinks back to startup. In Last Known Good configuration, it gets to the XP loading screen, flashes a blue screen for a split second (certainly not long enough to read it), then blinks back to startup.

After a bit of playing with the BIOS, we rebooted and noticed that the startup RAM check was running very slow. Once it reached 525000K, it returned to 0 and started counting up again, and skipping the memory test produced identical results to those in the above paragraph. So, we cracked open the case and noticed a sizable caking of dust on one side of the RAM (single 512mb pc2700) and on the contacts on the motherboard.

We did our best to try to clean up the RAM and the contacts without any kind of contact cleaner, and also tried the RAM in a different slot (which may not work regardless of condition on account of the motherboard's setup) but there was no change in the results.

A friend of mine suggested an over-the-top install of XP, but this was before we discovered the RAM issue.

Anyone have any ideas? Think the ram is dead? Just needs a thorough cleaning?

And by this I mean if you can get a virus so bad that your computer will not even turn on. If not, I'm wondering whats the worst that a virus will ever get. Even if you get the worst virus possible, I'm thinking that you will always just be able to pop in a system restore disc and format your computer. Is this not always the case?

How long did you have the PC powered on? Over several hours, then I would say that bytes received should be higher than bytes sent if you're just surfing the internet. However, Windows is, as my friend say, a chatty OS. For one, there's a browser service (not IE or firefox) which tries to discover whats on the network. You could disable that service and see what happens. I was able to achieve a 'quiet' network with Linux - no router lights blinking when I'm not sending anything.

I am fixing a Vista machine at the moment and I find it will not run a full Malwarebytes scan in a normal boot but will in safe mode.

Am just curious as to why?

A:Just curious

Any errors popping up? What version are you running? MBam was updated to V 1.70 ... You may need to close it out and then try to reconnect to their server again to get the latest update.

Hey yall..I was just curious to know if there were any really good Ad blockers out there? I have McAfee but I don't think it's blocking the Ads so much as just pop-ups. I downloaded another anti-malware program recently and in the scans it keeps detecting Ads so I'm thinking maybe McAfee might not be cutting it fully. My computer is running pretty well since I downloaded the other program but I still want to eliminate those annoying ads. Let me know if you do. Thanks

Hi MandyGurl,

Welcome to TSG! Nice Pic and back at ya!

There are a couple of ways to do this that involve installing more software.

1) First, you can install a Hosts file from: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
2) Next, you can install SpywareBlaster from: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
3) You can also install IE-SpyAD from: https://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm
4) If you are still only using IE, you can download Firefox from: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/

Firefox has a lot of extensions, and you can post another thread here for help and advice.

Nothing really important here, but I'd like to know if anyone has any ideas or explanations. I have 2 PC's, a laptop with XP Pro and a desktop with XP Home. On the laptop, I have a Defender Pro Firewall (from Kaspersky), and on the desktop, Norton Internet Security. I continually receive pop up alerts from Defender Pro (sometimes as often as every two hours or so) about a "Helkern attack" which has been successfully averted, and from NIS (although not quite so frequently, only every couple of days) about a repulsed attack from a "Trojan Bla" worm. So far, both firewalls have been successful in preventing these attacks, but it seems sort of odd to me that neither of them has ever reported the other firewall's attacker, or for that matter, any other kind of attack, since I use the same telephone line and ISP for both computers. Anybody have any ideas as to why Helkern only tries to get into my laptop, and Trojan Bla restricts itself to my desktop? Or could it be that these are only figments of their respective programs that they flash once in a while to assure me that they are accomplishing their tasks? I know curiosity killed the cat, and I'm pretty sure I know why, but I'd still like to hear any thoughts on this. Thanks for taking the time to read this.....Jeff

Hey RAHRules, read my post here: http://forums.techguy.org/t398026.html
You're not the only one who is curious , I've done scans with Housecall AND Panda, and apart from my Avast4 catching a trojan while Housecall was scanning (virus & spyware scan) I found no mention of any issues even the ones that Zonelabs found didn't show up. I also scanned with Adaware Se and SB S&D and Microsoft Antispyware.
Stranger than fiction some of this stuff isn't it..... Sometimes you wonder if these are just deliberate false positives to make the software look good.

Wiping a disk means writing zeros to every sector on the disk. By it's very nature this is going to be slow. The time required for such an operation is almost entirely dependent on disk performance so I wouldn't expect any significant time differences between programs that do this.

Mod Edit: Split from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic423572.html ~ Hamluis.I am in the same boat, for the second time in a few months.I was convinvced the first time it was some kind of Malware issue but it turned out to be a hard drive problem. In Windows XP and older, it was always obvious when the hard drive was acting up, but on my Sandy Bridge system with a used re-formatted 500G wester digital green drive, after 2 months it just got slower and slower to the point almost every window would come up as not responding for a while as I try to get anything done. The funny part is that the CPU usage was never high, the drive did not get noisey, and if you were seriously patient, it would eventually do what you asked. But what would normally have taken seconds was more like 10 to 20 minutes. Some programs would error out, the the OS in Win 7 will just kep trying until it gets the data from the drive. Back when my first system did this, I replaced the green drive with a Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 and that computer has been super fast and responsive ever since. Now I buile a second Sandy Bridge machine for my wife. I used the newer Z68 motherboard and started day one with a brand new Seagate Barracuda 7200 ST3 with the new 32 meg cache and excellent ratings on the web. For about a month, this thing was blazing fast, no lag ever. Then within a cpl days it went from my wife saying it hung a few times to being unable to make it to the log in screen in under an hour. I built my PC about 3 years ago.

The Mother Board is a Gigabyte G41M-ES2L Socket 775.
The CPU is an Intel Pentium Dual Core E2200 2.2Ghz 1MB 800Mhz

Is there any reason with this combination that I can NOT run a 64 bit OS??

A:Curious about 64 bit

quick googling indicates that the CPU supports 64-bit (but really even my current old rig and most netbooks I've seen allow 64-bit).

Mobo allows 8 gigs max of RAM.

So yes, it should run a 64 bit OS just fine.

whats better about 64-bit vista. like waht differnt than compared to 32-bit. I get the general picture and i know 64-bit is better for better computers but can someone plz explain to me a lil about the differences and what the two OSs actual do better or worse

A:Jus a lil curious...

It's not so much the operating system as it is the the processor. With 32-bit operating systems(O/Ss), the processor can only access 4GB of RAM (2^32). With a 64-bit O/S, the processor has access to much more (2^64). Keep in mind, the limit applies to ALL RAM. This includes the video RAM, the RAM set aside for hardware devices, and the swap file (which is virtual RAM). The remaining RAM is what the O/S will report as available RAM. For example, I have 4GB RAM installed on my system. However, I have 32-bit Vista installed. My RAM is reported as 3327.

If it is a store bought computer like a DELL, HP or Sony. Give the model number, and serial number or Service Tag number.

If the computer was made from scratch, open the case and look at the motherboard. There should be a model number located between the PCI slots, near the center of the motherboard

If the screens are of the same size, then chances are it will work fine once you know how to go about changing screens.

But depending on the age of the laptop(s), the internal connectors could be different. Also, the inverter may be a different type for each screen. Just try and find out for yourself.

Also, I would like to know where I should go to read about using and managing AVG 8.5 free, and what it finds, etc. In addition, I have noticed some entries containing "HP" which I don't know what they are. I used to have an HP printer, but I uninstalled it and no longer use it or its software on this computer. I have and use a Canon printer currently.

I have Windows XP obviously...I think my computer is 2006, it's an old computer I got for cheap on Amazon. It's tended to boot up slow pretty much since I got it, and I know that the more new programs I add, the slower it runs. It's annoying sometimes, but I pretty much know how to do something about it [i.e. defrag, cut down on programs, etc.] That's not what I'm wondering about.

I have an IBM Thinkpad T43 and when it would boot up when I first got it, it went through start-up just fine. It did not pause on a "choose user" screen. I'm not sure if that's the best way to put it, but you know the screen where you have to click on "winuser" or whatever your name is? I ended up having a lot of problems with my computer...my mouse wouldn't work...after I downloaded some Windows Updates to Internet Explorer 8. Apparently that doesn't work so well with my computer.

I got all that fixed, but I've noticed that ever since then, when I start my computer, it DOES come up with the "choose user" screen. There's only one user...me. I don't think it really means something's wrong, but does anyone know why it did that? Or was it just from removing some of the IE8 stuff? Or...what?
Edit: Also...this might be related to a different virus problem I'm having right now, but just posting this, it turned into a page of zeros. Er...that's bad, isn't it...

A:I'm just curious as to why this is...

One possible answer to suddenly having to use the logon screen...is if you recently had installed MS.NET on your system. One of the basic security features of installing that application resulted in user logon screens becoming an invoked feature, rather than an option.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827072To answer your current question re malware, I will move this to the Am I Infected forum, where someone capable can address your questions/situation.Louis

Personally, I don't like touchpads, trackballs, etc, but a regular "old" mouse. How about you?

A:Just curious, that's all...

Being in IT I get to support them all, to include the leftys that swap the mouse buttons. Personal preference is a gaming mouse with at least 5700 dpi, both at work and at home. The high dpi makes it easy to move from screen to screen and I don't have to move the mouse physically as far to get the on screen movement. A standard mouse seems to stop at the screen edge and require actual effort to get to the other screen. My order of preference would be:

1. High DPI Mouse
2. Touchpad
3. Standard Mouse
4. Trackball
5. Touchscreen
6. Pointer stick

Hello and thanks for taking the time to read this.
Today 'Windows Update' informed me of a recommended update outstanding: KB 2966583 which it claimed was 2.5MB, and as I had just put the pc on I thought I would install the update before I did anything else.
I only had Task Manager open so I downloaded the update and thought "since nothing else is open I will just check and see if it was really 2.5MB."
It was done and 'successfully installed' within minutes so I checked the 'bytes received' in Task Manager and it was only showing three hundred and odds thousand bytes so I waited a few minutes in case the Task Manager was still to 'catch up'. No, it did not increase so I opened Network and Sharing Centre and clicked on the active connection ( a Wi Fi connection ) and it was roughly showing the same ie three hundred and odd thousand bytes.
After searching for information online it seems this update, 'Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2966583)'
may have been an update of previous update bearing the same number.
Can anyone tell me why I appear not to have received 2.5MB when Microsoft claim it was a 2.5MB update? ( ie is the claimed 2.5MB just a maximum possible depending on previous updates ?)

Call me pernickety if you wish but thanks for reading anyway.

A:Just curious.

Windows downloads updates in the background, the update could have already been downloading and just waiting to be installed.

Task Manager doesn't show data transfers for downloads only network utilization for a given time, are you referring to Resource Monitor?

If you want to see if the update downloaded and installed, go to your Windows Update History.

Also, I'll move this thread to Windows 7 instead of General Security since its not a security question.

Q: Curious

Hey Guys,

Something really strange happened with my phone the other day. I got a text with a link to download World Cup Score Tracker from a mate of mine. I installed it but when I asked my mate about it a few days later, he had no recollection or idea that hed sent anything. We had look at his logs and theres was no message but the message clearly came from him, Im a little worried now any thoughts?

A:Curious

Sounds like one of those new botnet viruses. Your mates got a virus on his phone and now that youve installed the programme youve got it on yours as well. Try updating and running your antivirus software, I use a company called NetQin, I just read up about these new viruses a few days ago (http://blog.netqin.com/en/). Next time I suggest you not install any software youre unfamiliar with.

A year or two ago, my old computer got a virus. The virus changed the desktop background and seemingly wouldn't let any executables run. My question is: Had I come to this site, what would have probably been to course of action to remove the malware? I'm not looking for a perfect, extremely detailed response, for I know that that would probably take a considerable amount of time and may not even be possible. All I really want to know is 1. Could anything have been done? and 2. If so, what would the first step or two been?

Thanks in advance!

A:Curious about an infection

The course of action depends on WHAT the virus is. There is no one size fits all removal process. It's tailored to a specific infection.

A lot also depends on WHERE one posts about malware issues. Malware Removal Logs forum asks for specific logs that are not allowed in other forums here at Bleeping Computer.

Am I Infected helpers have a different set of tools. If those tools do not get rid of the infection you would be directed to Malware Removal Logs and the prep guide. In addition to the tools in the prep guide you might be asked to run other ones.

As for could anything have been done the answer is YES-depending on the infection. Some are so nasty that the best course of action to take would be a clean reinstall of the operating system. Others can be exterminated through the clean up process.

The first step: Deciding whether to post in AII or Malware Removal Logs with a detailed post about your issues.

I use FireFox as my default browser after having the stupid powerscan trojan that was downloaded from the stupid IE. So I'm curious... can you get spyware killers for FF, like spyblaster and yahoo-anti spy? I know FF is so good that it doesn't need them but...

A:Just Curious 'bout FF

You're right- it doesn't need them
If one existed, it would be in the form of an extension. I just did some rooting around, and did not find any worth noting.

The best advice I can give to you is to go and download AVG Free Edition in order to protect your computer from any future viruses.

Ok..so im upgrading soon. So I decided to consult with some people before jumping in. I was thinking about upgrading RAM as priority. Because I have only 2gb.
I have 4 slots for upgrade. 2 slots are used, currently with 1gb per slot. Should I get 1 4gb RAM stick? Or get 2x2gb RAM stick? Does it matter? Also if I do upgrade, Do I have to buy window 7 x64? If I want all my ram to be recognized? Or can I upgrade my 32bit to 64bit?
-----------------------
Second is video card.
My video card is getting a bit old, so I think it was about time to upgrade. (oddly it can handle crysis on low..) I am stuck between a few cards. Should I get the
GTX 460
ATI 5770
gtx 260 216 (too old for mainstream games?)
...

Anything around the 150-100 range. Money is tight, but pc gaming is fun, and its time to upgrade anyways...Feel free to reply with any input.
Oh and if I get one of those cards, can I use my 9600gt as a physx card? Or is it too old . And what are the benefits of physX card?

A:Upgrading just curious.

I think that CPU/motherboard combo supports dual channel, so the typical upgrade in your position would be to buy 2 more 1 gig sticks of RAM, for a total of 4.

No need to buy a single 4 gb stick. Most likely you could buy 2 x 2, for a total of 6. But don't just buy 1 more stick. Buy 2 or none.

Frankly, depending on what you do with your PC, you may see little or no difference in performance.

32 bit Windows can make use of about 3.2 gb of RAM---maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less. If you want to use all 4 GB, you have to upgrade to 64 bit.

If you have a 64 bit Windows disc, you can upgrade, but again, you might not notice any performance improvement from going to 64 bit or from going from 2 gb RAM to 4 gb. It just depends on how much RAM you use in your normal operations. Don't expect to be overwhelmed.

Your CPU is 2006 vintage. If I were you, I would bite a bullet, not upgrade RAM, and instead put the money toward a new motherboard, CPU, and RAM. I just upgraded ... Read more

I was installing my internet one day, and i forgot to connect the usb cord into my modem and i tried to connect to the internet. That "no connection" thing in XP popped up and asked if i wanted to change my IP to make the connection work again, till i examined my modem if it was connected right and found my mistake. Now i have a new IP address and sumhow my internet is really slow.

Can sum1 tell me what an IP address is for? and does it really affect my speed in browsing the internet?

A:Just curious about IP address

An IP or Internet Protocol address is a virtual address for your connection. I could ramble on for an hour about what it does, but I expect your eyes would glaze over after 10 minutes What you need to know is this...unless you have a valid IP address, you won't be able to browse the internet. The IP address does not determine the speed of your connection. Type IP address in at www.wikopedia.com for more information than you probably want.

bumpity bump bump ===========Hello While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, neither of us want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it.We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies until it has been responded to by a member o... is it true that all malware experts would keep mum about what specific adware-busting tools will do? like SDFix and ComboFix. i've been "prescribed" these two fixes for numerous times due to my lousy protection for the computer. once, i did use both these tools on my own ( without supervision of experts ) to clear out trojans and malware, and it worked like a miracle. however, i do know that it's not recommended to do so, so i'd like to know what "bad" does it do if i'm not supervised?

another thing is, if i do not use IE, do i still need to update it? it's still on v6, because i've been using firefox all along (is it okay to save passwords in firefox?). i'm afraid it'd still be exploited even if i don't use it at all.

and also, is it okay for me to use Eset's Smart Security for all-rounded protection? i've done quite a bit of reading on computer security and realise that most of you guys recommend dedicated antivirus, malware, firewall protection. does it mean there's no all-in-one software that i can rely on? i do understand that for a firewall to be good, it has to be bi-directional.

i wanted to include the hosts file protection also, but seems like it's pretty cumbersome and complicated, so i'd be leaving that out.

last of all, what would be a good website for me to test my protection level? i've come across some before, but not sure whether they really test the system to its limits.

assuming i have the suite of software below, would it be eno... Read more

A:Curious About Certain Stuff..

Let me answer the first two of your questions.

One of the reasons you should not use a tool like ComboFix unsupervised is that certain types of malware infection specifically target these tools. If you have an infection of this type, and you run the tool it can totally mess up your operating system to the point where a format and reinstall is the only option.

IE6 is still supported by Microsoft, which means that they still provide security updates when required. As such, there is no need to update if you don't feel the need.

Hi! Well I am posting my hijack Log to see if anyone can spot something that I may have missed.

Symptoms: During Random Times. The CPU would peg at 100% typically with an exe. I have noticed that one of the applications would just peg at 100% slowing the system down so much, that you can barely move the mouse. I noticed that if you were to end that task (lets say its outlook), and some time passes, Another exe does the same thing (snmp lets say). I noticed this happening occasionally. This is a work PC so there isn't TO much on the sysmtem (I do have Spybot and AVG which does an auto scan every once in a while). It is very peculiar as I checked the typical HKEY-LOCAL-MACHINE run and run once folders for anything that looked suspicious. Maybe someone can share some insight.

Here is my Log for your preview: (Thanks again for looking at it )

Hello, I was researching RAM for a build I am planning to buy this Black Friday (Can't wait ) and I noticed that I found some really cheap RAM and I don't know if this is a unreliable pos, or if this is a genuinely good find.

I know that lower CAS latency, higher frequency, and if you want your computer to run cooler, a lower voltage will make for nice ram.

This is the RAM I came across:
Newegg.com - Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model BLS2KIT4G3D1609DS1S00

For the most part (85%) of the reviews are 5 eggs, and it is $10 off with a promo code. Is there any reason I shouldn't buy these?

Also, I am going to be getting the Sabertooth Z77 motherboard and an i7 3770 and I was curious if anyone could tell me if this RAM is compatible with my planned setup.

A:Curious about RAM pricing...

Well depends on what you are going to use for the new build but the other RAM looks ok for what you have now.

Oh meant to mention if you idn't now turn of the defrag you don't need it with the SSD. Plus take a look at this if you already haven't - more speed.
