Split large size folder into smaller ones retaining subfolder names

Q: Split large size folder into smaller ones retaining subfolder names

I need to split a folder containing several levels of subfolders into dvdr sizes for backup. I would like to retain not only the folder name but subfolders names.

Ex. C:\Pictures\Summer is 7gb and i would like to split it into C:\folder1\pictures\summer and C:\folder2\my pictures\summer

Any one know of a util? RAR/ZIP is an option but I would really like viewable access to the files on any disc.

The folder I need to split is quite large 70GB.

A: Split large size folder into smaller ones retaining subfolder names

Your talking about 16+ DVDs for that one file. The odds of one of them being bad is quite high.

Why not backup to an external hard drive instead?

Also, most burner software will do this for you automatically. I know Roxio will for sure. It will put as much as it can on each DVD then prompt you for a new one when that is done.

Hi there,

I found this topic which actually solved my problem on splitting the csv file into multiple ones, split a 100000 line csv into 5000 line csv files with DOS batch, however it is already closed so I decided to open a new one.

The solution given to the previous thread was this and it actually worked:

@echo off
REM Edit this value to change the name of the file that needs splitting. Include the extension.
SET BFN=BigFile.csv
REM Edit this value to change the number of lines per file.
SET LPF=5000
REM Edit this value to change the name of each short file. It will be followed by a number indicating where it is in the list.
SET SFN=SplitFile

REM Do not change beyond this line.

SET /A LineNum=0
SET /A FileNum=1

For /F "delims==" %%l in (%BFN%) Do (
SET /A LineNum+=1

echo %%l >> %SFN%!FileNum!.%SFX%

if !LineNum! EQU !LPF! (
SET /A LineNum=0
SET /A FileNum+=1

However, after splitting the file, I noticed that only the first split had the column headers while the remaining ones does not have them. Is it possible to do that through batch? If yes, what code can I include in the code given above?

Does anyone know of a free utility to capture those folder and file names into something that I can manipulate (Text, Excel, Word, etc.)? I have found a couple but the ones I found only do 1 layer at a time. I would like to get all the information in a tree structure format.

Hello! Yes, I'm a newbie and a numpty. This place looks wonderful! I hope you can help me.

Here's what happened: I reinstalled Windows for my sister, who is visually impaired. I just installed Windows XP Pro. Just finished it, and then handed it over to her, to customize her settings. Since she has bad vision, she usually lowers the resolution down to 800x600 and has the font size and title bar sizes larger. Well as soon as I left her alone with her computer, she messed up the windows or icon settings so bad, so everything is HUGE. Everything is so huge, that (what should be) small menus now fill the whole screen. We can't get to the part of the preferences window to change the resolution to something higher, and we can't get to anywhere (that we know of) to change anything back to something resembling normal. Basically, we can't do anything anymore.

I know I can reinstall Windows XP all over again, but since I JUST DID THAT I'd like to avoid having to do it all over again. Is there some way to reset the preferences, without having to reinstall the whole operating system for something so seemingly idiotic? Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

A:All icons/windows too large, cannot reset or change preferences to smaller size

get into "safe mode" hold F8 key down soon as pc starts to reboot highlight top menu when the safe mode window opens tap enter once in safe mode boot up, you should be able to access the resolution settings and reset the one you require..

I am trying to use Windows 7 search engine to find all files containing a specific string on their names, on a specific folder and it's subfolders. Let's say I am trying to find files containing the string "link" on their names.
Having subfolders named "linked" and "netlink", the problem is the results include all the files contained in those 2 subfolders (hundreds), which do not have the string "link" on their names, and therefore I do not want to be shown as results.
Apparently, the Windows 7 search engine compares the file's full-path instead of the unqualified file name.
Is there anything I can do to search only file names instead of full-path names?
I do not have this problem on a Vista machine...
Thanks in advance.

For a while now my Windows folder has been taking up more space on my 60GB SSD than I think it should. The size breakdown goes like this:

C:/Windows - 28 GB

- winsxs - 11.65 GB
- System32 - 8.45 GB
- Assembly - 1.63 GB
- SysWOW64 - 1.30 GB
- Installer - 1.17 GB
- Microsoft.NET - 1.03 GB
- SoftwareDistribution - 0.85 GB

I do regular registry fixes and temp file cleans, and I do regular inspections on my drives to remove unnecessary files and programs. However, the large increase in my Windows folder which happened about 6 months ago is really bothering me.

Is there any way get rid of some excess files? Or is this just a case of Windows inaccurately showing the actual amount of free space due to hard links?

Help is appreciated, thanks

Earlier this evening I had about 6 windows open all checked with "SHOW SIDE BY SIDE." Since then, I've been unable to get many of my windows to open back to the maximized view. I clicked on that option again thinking it would no longer show things side by side.

Now windows open in the top part of the monitor screen in the top 1/4 horizontally. Hope that makes sense. When I had XP, I was able to resize the screen manually, hold the control key down, and left click on the red X. When reopening, the screens would be maximized.

How can I get my screens back to opening full screen mode rather than in the top 1/4 and only seeing about 3 inches downward? I would prefer not to have to maximize each and every screen.

This was not an issue until I had the 6 windows side by side this evening. I've used the side by side option before but only for 2 windows to be horizontallly side by side, not 6. Did it confuse the pc (LOL)?

Thanks for any help,

Something I like and can't seem to get Win 7 to do for me.....

I open a window for my computer, size it and set it at the upper left of my screen. I open folders in new windows; i.e. open the D: Drive and position it next to the window I opened for my computer. Close both. When I open my computer again it is now in the position where I opened the D: Drive.

How do I get specific windows to retain the size and position I set each time I open them rather then simply pick up the size and position of the last window I opened?

Sorry for this sophomoric question; I'll probably kick myself when I know the answer.

I know this is supposed to be a Windows 7 forum, but my problem is on a Windows XP machine. A lot of you experts learned your stuff on XP so probably have a good idea what the problem might be.

I have an HP XW4100 computer that I use to store backups. It doesn't have to be fast, and XP has worked well on that machine.

It has IDE and SATA ports on the motherboard, and I have added 2 x 4TB Seagate HDs connected to the on-board SATA ports. Using Seagate DiscWizard, I am able to split those drives into a 2tb and 1.6tb drive each so XP can partition and format them with MBR. So far so good.

Wanted to add some more 4TB drives, but there's no more SATA ports on the motherboard. Bought a Vantec PCI SATA card which uses the SiL 3114 chip and has 4 internal SATA ports. Installed the drivers, and when pluggin in an older 500g WD SATA drive, the OS sees it, I can partition it and use the drive.

When I plug a Seagate 4TB drive into that controller (even one that works with the MB SATA port), I can see the drive in device manager, Seagate DiscWizard can see the drive and partition it, but the drive will not show up in Disc Management so I can't use it.

I would conclude from this that the SiL 3114 chip has issues with large hard drives, while the Chipset on my HP has no problems. Strange though that the drive shows up in Device Manager and DiscWizard. Seems like a driver issue, but I've tried all the SiL drivers, and as I say, a smaller older SATA drive works fine.

I recently replaced a 14" LCD monitor with a 17" LCD monitor. This has the result of scaling up the size of all windows by what I assume to be 17/14ths.

But what I want is to have the windows be the same size (in INCHES, not pixels) as on the smaller monitor, with every letter in whatever font being the same size (in INCHES, not pixels) as on the old monitor.

This would be a great advantage, as then I could actually make use of the larger real estate and have more windows open. It may not be possible - I've tried all the display and system font settings. But if anyone has a suggestion I'd appreciate it.

Running XP SP2 with all patches installed. I have the monitor resolution set to 1024 x 768.

A:[SOLVED] have large monitor - want smaller windows

Window sizes are measured in pixels (not inches). LCD size aside, screen size is determined by the resolution of the monitor. If you were using 1024x768 on the old monitor and are still using 1024x768 on the new monitor, then your screen size is still the same (it only appears larger because you are displaying it on a larger screen). LCP panels should be run at their native resolution. Look up the specs of your monitor to find the native resolution.

When using dvd flick it gets annoying because after I encode a (home made) movie it asks for a name of the movie and subsequently produces a folder with that name. Here is the annoying part. After it creates the movies named folder it puts the video and audio ts file containing folders inside of a sub folder always named dvd.... So now when I go to burn the stupid movie I am always met with this ,dvd, as the name of the movie, which I always have to rename even though I have the correct name of the movie as the subsequent folder. If I could point dvd flick to produce the audio and video files inside of the subsequent folder, instead of putting them in the sub folder, it would bring up the name of the movie when I went to burn it, saving me a great deal of time, energy and effort. If I try to to use the subsequent folder with the correct name of the movie to burn a disk my dvd players ,none of them, will ever play the movie because the audio video file are inside of the sub folder named dvd. How can I change dvd flick so it , gets rid of the sub folder named dvd, and puts the audio video folders in the subsequent folder with the correct name so I do not have to retype the name repeatedly?

So I have to open the first folder, delete it's contents, then I can delete the original folder.

Example I have a folder named: movie, This folder contains: tvshow.mp4, and folder subs.

If I try to delete folder movie, I get error "you do not have permission to delete this folder"

If I open folder movie, delete folder subs, no error. Then I delete folder Movie, no error.

This happens on every folder no matter the contents.

This does not happen on drive c: where the OS is installed.

I am using Win 7 pro. And there is only one account on the PC that is the admin. What do I need to do so I can just delete the parent folder without deleting each sub folder.

Hi Phil,

Unfortunately, there's no easy way to do this in Vista (well, there is, but it doesn't always "stick" - it tends to revert to the template defaults or change as you change other folders no matter what you do (though I seem be generally successful for the most part - it seems to typically work most of the time)). There's no "trick" or registry modification or anything like that I'm aware of that will solve this when it happens. It's a very common complaint.

Go to go Start / Control Panel/ Folder Options / View Tab and make sure the box Remember each folder's view settings is set. That's about all you can do on a folder-by-folder basis and generally works for me (as far as the View only itself goes). The rest can only be altered by changing the templates - and that pretty much does it for all folders of that type - not just the individual ones.

Here's some information I've put together on changing folders that may be of some help (though the above, as limited as it is, seems to be the best and only option on a folder-by-folder basis).

Here's how to change the default template for a folder: Default behavior is to select the template based on the first type of file placed in the folder (it has to choose something). Vista sets the Explorer window view settings and folder type template according to what folder types are in the window. This will show you how to r... Read more

I have *a lot* of folders, sub folder, and files, on my work pc. A lot of the files have similar names, and I have lost control over where I have my files. I use a lot of time to open and close each folder and sub folder to find my files.

a mode you can turn on in a Lister that enables you to view all the contents of a folder's sub-folders at once. In effect it collapses, or flattens, the display of a nested hierarchy of folders and files into a single folder.

But, it is not free; instead, you have to purchase it online.

I want to share a folder on my laptop, but a subfolder needs to not be shared, I currently have 'everyone' set to read only on the share (as this is what's needed') but I want to prevent access for everyone to the subfolder over the share (not locally), but I cannot seem to find a way to do so.
I could set 'everyone' to deny full permissions on the local permissions but that would prevent both local and network access, that's unsuitable because I still need local access. Is there a solution?

First of 2 questions, I had a music folder for my itunes which had all the mp3s and music files displayed as soon as I clicked on the folder which was named "Music" -- Something recently happened which now when I click on my "Music" folder all my music files are now in subfolders categorized according to Artist! This is extremely inconvenient for me when I try to find a song and it's located behind subfolders. How do I get rid of the subfolders so all my music files are displayed as soon as i click on the folder?

2nd question - I may need to replace my laptop's hard drive in the near future, Will I also need to buy a new Windows 7 license? This laptop was shipped with Vista- I upgraded to Win 7, or can I keep my current copy of windows 7? Thank you!

I created a new database that contains several different tables with relationships, auto number fields, and all the fun stuff that goes with those things. However, my workplace had been inputting data into an extremely large table for years. This large table contains all the data that I need to be in my new database. I was wondering if there is a way to take the contents of the one large table and append it to the multiple tables that I created in the new database. To further complicate matters, I changed some of the formatting and/or names of fields. Any thoughts or suggestions for the most effective and efficient method to complete this process would be greatly appreciated.

Just a note: I have this week and next week to complete the design of the database and get all these people input into the database (a daunting task, I know). So, manually adding the data is not really a feasible option.

When browsing folders, I prefer to see large icons. I manually change the settings to see folders the way I prefer, but everytime I try to view folders, I once again see folders displayed in the same old "list" format. As far as I know, I've changed internal settings to remember folder settings, but as I write, the thought occurs to me that maybe I've caused the OS to remember "list" rather than what I desire. If you have experience with this issue, I'd appreciate your insight. I am using Vista if that matters.

I've gotten great help from TSG. Thanks.

I noticed recently that my system and other folder names have changed on their own! What the -h- happened? I have never seen anything like this before. These folders appear on all of my drives c:, d:, g: and they are random. It looks like they are of another language, maybe? Actually, the wording makes no sense at all...> It looks like most of these folders previously existed.

Things I have done: Ran Anti-V program + Ewido Suite = No viruses, trojans, malware, etc. Ran three adware programs (ad-aware, spywareblaster, spyware doctor) = Clear. Checked all running processes and startup tab in mscofig = no peculiar programs detected. Ran regseeker = Phenominal amount of invalid keys, etc. (3,000+) very unusual to the norm!!!

I installed a 60 gig SSD realizing it is too small after windows says there is only 55 gigs on the SSD instead of 60 ? After doing some reading, this is considered normal ?

A:SSD smaller then Original Size ?

Hi there
I think there are some posts somewhere on the forum about size reported on Disks.
Manufacturers obfuscate the issue deliberately because they treat say 1GB as exactly as 1000 MB and a MB 1s exactly 1 Million Bytes.

In Normal terminology (Windows etc) 1 Mega anything is 1024 X 1000.

So Windows will always report the disk has having less bytes than the manufacturer.

Pity - but true. The Manufacturers aren't going to change.

i want to convert a dvd to a format that will allow to be a zise of 500 to 7-800mb ,
maybe avi,or other video formats ,the smaller the video the better, but the screen size to stay the same, and image quality!

at the conversion ,maybe is possible to have one file...?

let me know your advice, and also if any software to do that and guide how to do it...

A:converting video from dvd to... to smaller size!?

There are numerous factors that determine a file size, such as the video resolution, video bitrate, codec used, audio type, video length, etc. You can typically have high quality or small size. To get anything else, you need to decide which is more important, quality or size and make adjustments based on your decisions.

I currently use Vidcoder (Free - which is a gui for handbrake) to create mkv files. You can tweak the settings to get the quality or file size that you want/need. In the past I have used AutoGK (Free) with good results. I've also heard very good things about CloneDVD mobile (not free), but I've not used it.

It will be a matter of trial and error for you to experiment and find a happy medium between size and quality.

I just installed an Acer AL1912 LCD screen. I have three PC's on XP SP1 connecting to the monitor through KVM switch. My display Resolution is at 1280x1024 (as
resommended by Acer) and Color Quality is 32 bit. I use Large font (120 DPI) and my Adapter nVidia is set at 75Hz. I have tried many combinations of the above parameters to no avail. I get a desktop that is from 1 cm to 3 cm smaller (for 3 PC's) than the screen size, horizontally. The monitor just has controls for moving the desktop horizontally, not changing its horizontal dimension. When a PC is booted, the entire screen size is
utilized. As soon as the XP sign-on comes on, the desktop size shrinks horizontally. What is going on? What do I need to do? Thanks.

A:Desktop Smaller than Screen Size on XP

While some monitors will adjust automatcally when switching many will not & if you adjust the screen size for one when you switch the other might be off. Since you have all 3 computers set to the same resolution you might try adjusting the refresh rate usually labeled as number followed by Hz (60 Hz, 75 Hertz etc.) somewhere in the advanced settings depending on what the make of your video card is - could be the under monitor tab as well.

Edit - Maybe I misinterpreted you if all three systems are the same size then you need to keep looking for one that will work. On better graphic cards like radeons there's an option to adjust that horizontal dimension in the advanced settings, since your monitor itself doesn't have it embedded on its menus. On the system I'm working on now (radeon 8500) there's a monitor adjustments tab that allows for changing position & size for both horizontal & vertical properties.

Hi all,
This is just a preliminary request for advice before I undertake writing a fairly substantial VBA macro.

My plan, in short, is as follows:

- User receives a daily Invoice file. The data from this is to be dropped onto an Excel Table I've prepared (let's call this the Invoiced Table) in the Master File, which will allow some formulae, such as IFs and Vlookups to static tables, to auto-populate. Each day's data is to be appended to the bottom of the table.

- User receives a weekly Paid file. The data from this will be dropped into a second Excel Table (let's call this the Paid Table) on another worksheet in the Master File.

- Once the weekly file data has been dropped in, the user will run the macro. This will compare records from the Invoiced Table against the Paid Table using at least 4 (probably 8) different sets of lookups. In a simplified example, these might be 4 different customers.

- Each set of lookups will result in some matches. For each matching record for a specific customer, fields from the Invoiced and Paid tables need to be combined into a new record on a seperate worksheet.
So in a simplified example, Record 1 might have an Invoice Number in the Invoice Table that matches the Invoice Number in the Paid Table. I'll need to copy the Invoice Number, Customer Number and, say, the Invoice Date field from the Invoiced Table, plus the Paid Date from the Paid Table.

- I'll then need the macro to delete those lines from both t... Read more

I experience a serious reoccurring issue with Windows 7 window management. It happens 1 in 5 times when logging in after locking the screen (or putting the machine to standby).

Windows are restricted to a part of the whole desktop. Please note that the explorer window in the attached picture is maximized, but not occupying the whole desktop as expected! (In fact I can move windows to the right side, but not maximize to it. Also when moving windows there, it snaps *not* to the edge of the screen but to to the same wrong line where the edge of the maximized window is.)

What is this? What causes this? How can I disable this? Only restart helps by now...

Thanks for any response.

Hello Sibidiba.

I have the exact same problem. VERY frustrating. Have you had any luck finding a resolution to the issue?

BTW, while not a fix, you don't need to reboot, but only have to logout then re-login. Should be a bit quicker.

It amazes me that this isn't well documented with a fix somewhere. I just keep finding responses about adjusting your screen size resolution, or updating drivers, etc.

If I find a fix I'd be happy to let you know, but if you come across one, please let me know as well.

Win 7/64. Whenever I read an incoming e-mail, the font size I see is the size shown in the font size window.
However, when I try to compose, forward or reply/reply all, the font that shows up on the screen is so tiny that it barely readable. When I'm replying, even the original e-mail text is tiny. This just started happening the last couple of days.

Hello all,
I am fairly new to macros and am looking to split a large word document into smaller files based on a text string within the document, and then save those files as individual word documents, or as a bonus, PDF documents. The text string is "HEADER DATA".

Basically, I want the macro to find the text string "HEADER DATA", then select that page and all pages up to but not including the next instance of "HEADER DATA", then cut those pages from the original document, create a new document with the same formatting/ page layout, and save that document with a new file name. I want the process repeated until the end of the document, and each file saved with a new file name.

Some attributes about the file:

The text string "HEADER DATA" is always in the same location on a page, but is not at the top of the page.
The format and layout of the new document must match the current document.

Here is something I came up with (don't laugh too hard, lol). This will extract the first pages as intended, and saves the new file, but then Word stops responding. I don't quite know what the error is. Thank you in advance for any help.

I would like to figure out which files were not restored.
Is there any way to figure out which files are missing. After I restored the files, the report says that hardlinks could not be transferred but does not the size of them. The bkf file size is 33,754,314 bytes larger than the restored file, but the bkf file "size on disk"is 19, 099,648 bytes smaller than the restored folder!!!
When I left click on the bkf file and select properties it does not tell me how many files are in the bkf file only the bytes.

Is there any freeware/program that will tell me the number of files in the bkf properties dialogue box? A:Really fad up because of the large size updates

Unfortunately, that's seems to be the way of things for now. The vendors have to keep adding/revising their database defintions to keep them up to date. Some vendors do this several times a day. There are security programs which allow you to download updates manually. I still have to use dial-up because of the rural area where I live. A solution for me is to manually download the large updates to the security tools I use (SUPERAntispyware, MalwareBytes) from another computer with a high speed connection, save them to a usb stick and transfer them to my machine when I get home. However, I use NOD32 AV which does not have a manual download page so I have no choice but to update through the program's GUI if I want to keep it (which I do).

Hi, please help. I have a one year old Lenovo desktop PC which is run on windows 8. I'm using a Insignia 39 inch tv/monitor and the desktop display is off the screen. Tried changing the resolution and that doesn't help. My bottom taskbar is about 1/2 inch off the screen and the sides are of about an inch. I know I had this same problem when I first bought this monitor and some tech at Lenovo helped me resize it. The Lenovo is an Ideacenter K4 series. Also, this problem is not when I open new pages or programs, only on my desktop screen with my icons.

running windows xp and when I open a document that uses word 2007,the document is larger than the screen. The "x" at the top right is off the screen not allowing me to close the doc.Can I decrease the size of the documents?.

A:document size too large

This is NOT a Word issue, but a Windows pane setting issue.

With Word open, Hit "Alt-" (hyphen) and then using the down directional key select Move and the enter key.
Now using the directional keys, move the pane so you can see one of the upper corners. Click with the mouse and then select the corner and resize the pane so you can see all of it.

I have a small media server. It's a bunch of drives in a full size tower PC, each formatted individually (i.e. no RAID - NTFS). Right now it's 6 drives, either 4TB or 3TB.

I have a bunch of smaller (1.5TB and 2TB) drives that I'm not using and would like to use to have a backup of the files spread across the 6 larger drives.

Anyone have a good idea of how to do this? Ideally I would like a solution like in the good old CD/DVD backup days where you can tell a backup app to back the whole lot onto CDs and it will span across however many DVDs you need. But for hard drives. It will copy all it can to the first hard drive until it's full, then it will ask me to mount a new hard drive and it will pick up where it left off. Nobody seems to make such a program.

Alternately I can just back up as much as I can to each drive and then pick up where I left off on the next backup drive. But how do I figure out in Windows 7 how many folders I can copy before I try to copy too much for the target drive? Is there a backup utility for Windows like the OS X app Carbon Copy Cloner that tallies the selected backup folders prior to copying them?

Thanks for any advice or thoughts...

A:HELP - Backing Up Several Large HDDs to Many Smaller HDDs

There is no easy 1-click option to do this.

One possibility is to setup the smaller disks as a JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks) if the BIOS allows that, and the JBOB is sufficiently large to cater for your needs.

An alternative is write a .bat to use robocopy to copy selected data to a selected spare disk. You will, however, need calculate capacity beforehand.

My 32GB Windows 10 Home PC (recently upgraded from 8.1) is low on disk space. I deleted Windows.old and I have hibernation disabled. Apart from a few browsers, very little else is installed, yet I only have 11.7GB left?

One reason may be the size of the Windows folder:
Size 14.7GB
Size on Disk 9.91GB

From my calculations, Windows appears to be using the higher figure in determining available disk space.

Why is 'Size' so much greater than 'Size on Disk', can I do anything about it? I have a similar 8.1 machine, it does not have this disparity (12.4GB and 12.3GB).

What would be a normal 'Size' for a Windows folder on Windows 10 Home PC very recently upgraded from 8.1 i.e. with few, if any Windows live updates run ?

A:Windows Folder Size greater than Size on Disk

I imagine its because windows compresses some system files currently it may be using 9gb but with all files uncompressed you may be looking at 14 which is why it uses the higher value

Windows 10 will save disk space and no longer require a recovery partition | Windows 10 content from SuperSite for Windows

Recently when I use favorite ccleaner software to clean my temp files, I notice that there is large size file is creating by name of CBS.log in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS with size of 200 MB or more.
I never had this issue before and it seems that this causes a high usage of cpu and hard drive speed, which causes affect on my gaming experience or other works.
do anyone has any idea why it's creating and why so large? also any suggest to prevent it?

A:large size CBS.log files creating, was never before

CBS.log is where SFC (System File Cleaner) among others writes it's information. 200MB is not a lot so I wouldn't be too concerned.

This is driving me NUTS! I've been grappling with this problem for days! I am running Office 2010 on Windows 7 64-bit. I just created my first PowerPoint presentation containing 30 slides, all containing images, with a total of 35 images overall. All of the images together add up to less than 6 MB. During the creation of the slides I was careful to follow the guidelines for Sizing Digital Images For Powerpoint.

However, when I save the presentation to disk, it is over 55 MB! I have tried to Compress Pictures from the Format toolbar-- no effect. In fact, file size of the presentation was larger after this. If I go to File>Info>Optimize Media Compatibility, this option is GRAYED OUT and does not work! I want to be able to send this presentation as an email attachment, but 55MB is way too big!

What the heck is going on here? How can I fix this???

Thanks for any and all advice.

We recently purchased a 22" widescreen Samsung EX2220 LCD monitor. Unfortunately the icons and labels on thedesktop and the teston the toolbars, taskbars, drop down menus are too small. I've changed the setting several times (Control Panel -display-Appearance-"Font Size" and all the "advanced" settings.) By doing this the fonts and text gets larger. However, every time we re-boot, all the settings go back to the way they were - small.
Does anyone know how to keep they large after a reboot?
Any help would be appreciated.

A:Can't keep Icons and font size large
do that first, will help anyhow

your issue may be because your graphics can not handle the resolution you are wanting, check your graphics card/motherboard spec with manufacturer to see what max resolution is

Hi, I have the exact problem as another member. I have Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit on a 15 inch Toshiba laptop my first computer ever. I changed the DPI screen resolution to the largest print since it was orginally too small to see and now cannot access the bottom of that screen to make any changes to reset it back small again. This enlargement of the screen also occurs on many of the control panel screens and all websites I visit. Spent hours trying everything possible all kinds of ways to fix this and very frustrated. Tried to enter through Classic Control Panel and Ease of Use suggestion to change it but no luck. Will read up on that safe mode idea. My 20 something computer neighbor was also baffled and tried to reboot but was unable to do this either hoping to reset it all back to the factory settings. Thanks for any help. Judy

A:Cannot change large DPI size back

Hello Judy, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You should me able to boot into Safe Mode and change the DPI settings back there, then boot back into the normal desktop mode.

Hope this helps,

Hi all
It seems that the default paging size set in RTM is the same as the actual amount of physical RAM in the system - on the laptop I'm using this is 4GB.

Now unless your system is going totally 100% bonkers the general rule of thumb for setting paging size in almost every OS on the planet that uses paging is to set the page file size at HALF the amount of physical RAM installed in the system.

I've re-set mine without any adverse effects whatsoever. Also makes startup and shut down quicker as there's less paging info to initialize and free.

A:Default paging size in RTM too large

Windows has always set the default page file size to a range of 1.5x to 3x the physical RAM size. And given that 90% of the world's OS is Windows, I think that the vast majority of operating systems don't have it set to half the RAM size. :P

That having been said, setting the paging file size based on the physical RAM size is silly and makes no sense. Even if you set it to half the RAM size, that means that on systems with more RAM, you have a larger paging file (when in fact you will be using less of the paging file). I normally set my paging file to a static size, either 1GB or 2GB, regardless of how much RAM the system has.

How did I change the font size from appearance to large for an individual user in a Citrix desktop (Windows 7 build).

When right clicking personalize it's blocked by group policy.
This must not apply to all users only the one persons profile.

I'm currently looking for the registry setting under HKEY_Current_User.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Guys,
I recently downloaded America's Army , it was an exe file of 2.50GB .
When I tried to open it ; the pc hung ;
First I thought the file must be broken.
Later when i put in a dvd, to install medal of honor demo 554mb, i experienced the same problem. I opened process explorer and the double clicked again on the exe; I observed that "medal_of_honor_pacific_assault_demo.exe" was opening multiple times , dunno how to put it , like a chain until i terminated it ;
like this

But when i try opening exe files of lower size live TTpro.exe 5mb ; and other stuff they open without any problem.

I scanned for viruses & spyware ; with zonealarm but detected none.

Also I noted that the exe files with large files dont have their usual icons .
I also made sure that they aren't isolated cases. Check the pics

My sys config is AMD 64 3000+ , 1.5GB Ram , nvidia 7100gs, 240gb hd

I'm totally confused about this.

I would suspect the computer component that would dictate what size to set the Temp. Internet File Size...That being: Tools/Internet Options/General/Settings under Temporary Internet Files/Amount of disk space to use...Would be the size of your RAM.

With 4 1GB sticks installed with 3.31GB showing in "My Computer/Properties...What would be the proper setting in this case?
