Hi there,I have a Vista operating system with Virgin Media Security anti-virus program. I have also downloaded malwarebytes but have uninstalled it since Virgin Media Security is now picking up this re-occuring virus (kazy.**** and Generic.KDV).I am concerned that it has been re-occuring. Is there something wrong? Should I run the "thorough/deep" MalWareBytes scan? Is someone putting these on my computer? Help would be appreciated:-)See screenshot.C:\Users\Raff\Pictures\Virus list 16 April 2011

I receive hundreds of spam a day. I notice that some email addresses of these spams are very similar to people in my address book. It's like they read what's on my hard drive. Is there a worm or some software that got into my hard drive that is reading my addresses and bouncing emails to me? ? Thanks. I will kiss your toes if you can help me.

My stupidity caused the problem. Hope someone can figure an easy way out. I can fix it the hard way.

I have a folder of word documents (hundreds). My wife has a similar file (also hundreds).

All the documents are recipes. Mine all have the word "recipe" as the first word of the document title. My wife's does not.
example: Recipe Gooey butter cake.doc vs. Gooey butter cake.doc

I want to combine the two files and they will automatically alphabetize themselves in a single file....if.... I can delete the word recipe from one set of documents.

Anybody know of a quick way to accomplish this?

TIA

hi

i am trying to copy some files from a windows 2000 pc to a novell 3.11 server, but when the file names are longer than 8 char i cant copy it.....how can i configure windows 2000 to convert those long files name in to short files names.

when i do it manualy it prompt me to automaticaly convert the names, but the problem is that i am copying the files using a batch and the batch just dont copy the files

Thanks

A:Convert long files names into short files names

It is generally not a good idea to truncate long filenames to 8x3 unless you have no other alternative. Perhaps you know that already, I apologize if I assume too much.

If you are certain that it is required to be in 8.3 format by the server, you can use a 16 bit copying program rather than the default Windows copy command. The Windows command detects the 32 bit environment and automatically uses a 32 bit copy procedure that preserves long filenames.

I would recommend using xxcopy16, which is a free utility. It comes as a component of a two part package, the other component being xxcopy. xxcopy is 32 bit, xxcopy16 is 16 bit. You get what you ask for when running those commands and the windows environment will not dictate selection.

The command line with xxcopy16 would be:

xxcopy16 <source> <destination> /yy /WV0

(That's a zero at the end and the command is case sensitive.)

Hi,

I'm new to using robocopy but I have used it for awhile with a couple of external drives to keep them in sync but using a simple command like:

robocopy g: f: /E /R:2

this copies everything from the g: drive to the f: drive including empty directories and tries 2 times for failures.

On my desktop which is a XP Pro machine as well, I've installed the Windows Resource Kit Tool which includes robocopy and am trying to do a similar thing to copy my "My Documents" directory on my c: drive to my k: drive which is an external drive on my mionet network. The copy does work fine but each time I run the robocopy command, a large number of the files get copied even though they haven't changed. I'm sure that I'm just missing something but I've tried adding things to the command line to not copy older files. Here's something that I have tried:

robocopy "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents" "K:\ImageThat\My Documents" /E /R:2 /XO /A-:A

each time that I execute this command, I get about 800 files that get copied and I don't understand why. Anyone see anything that I'm missing, or perhaps the way that I am understanding how robocopy works is the problem.

thanks in advance!
Bill

The default copy switch of robocopy is /COPYAT if you don't specify any copy options. This is the code I'm using:

robocopy C:\ D:\Backup RAMDisk.img /copyall /R:5 /W:15 /V /log:\Users\Kevin\Desktop\robocopy_log.txt

The RAMDisk.img file that I'm copying is a compressed image file. Now with that syntax /COPYAT will be used which means that it will copy all attributes of that file. Whenever I run this, I successfully copy the file but it doesn't retain the compression attribute of that file.

What could be wrong with this? Both source and destination are NTFS-formatted.

A:Backing up files using Robocopy

Although compression is indicated via a file's attributes, I'm not sure if that particular property actually transfers with the copy, even with Robocopy. If you copy to a compressed folder (folder and contents) then I would think the copy would be compressed. And if that folder is not compreesed, files that are placed there will be uncompressed (even if you are copying a compressed file to that location).

I'm using robocopy (ver XP010) on a Windows XP laptop to copy user files to another drive for backup.

robocopy "c:\my documents" "Z:\myname\my documents" /XO /M /ZB /E /MIR /log:c:mylog.txt /TEE

It creates all of the directories and subdirectories but doesn't copy any of the files. The log shows no errors - total dirs 162 copies 162, total files 1458 skipped 1458.

To minimize variables I tried using a new usb external NTFS hard drive (Z) but it still skips all of the files. I've verified the permissions and owership of the files and everthing seems in order. The problem is limited to this computer, the other computers in the group are OK. Any suggestions?

I just found out that 2 of the 6 computers in this group fail so I will be compairing files and permissions etc. to see what the two failed ones have in common against the working ones.

Our Windows 7 backup machine uses robocopy to differentially refresh a file server backup each evening. Unfortunately, users use Microsoft Outlook with PST files, which are locked by Outlook. I often noticed that when users had not closed Outlook by the
time the backup reached their PST file, robocopy failed to update the file.
I thought that was a non-issue since such cases only happen to about 2 users each day, but I had the surprise to discover that when robocopy fails to update, it deletes the outdated files (/MIR implies /purge).
Do others get the same result? If so, can this be avoided? I did not find any option to ignore locked files in the documentation. I suppose this would not happen without /purge, but /purge is somewhat necessary (a simple directory rename could otherwise
largely inflate space usage).

hi,

I have a standard Windows 10 build and I'm using robocopy to backup my data to an external drive. The goal is just to capture all my data so if the PC fails/gets stolen etc. I can restore my data on to another PC.

I'm doing a backup of c:\users\ as this seems to capture all my data. Are there any other folders you think I should backup?

I've excluded the 'AppData' folder as this seems to have a lot of stuff which is not data. Is that OK or do you think that should be backed up? Are there any other folders you think I should skip?

Thank you very much for your comments.

Hi

I've just re-organised my hard drives and I've set up a batch routine to backup my files, using Robocopy.

However, as I swapped my drives around, I've copied in the wrong direction. Robocopy has consequently deleted entire folders of important data.

The data isn't in the recycle bin.

What should I do to try and recover the data?

Thanks

A:Used Robocopy and deleted my files - how can I recover them?

Is the partition unharmed and still visible in Explorer and Windows Disk Managment?

If it's unharmed, I'd consider PhotoRec or Recuva to recover the files. Both are free.

Ontrack Easy Recovery Professional is also said to be excellent, but I think you ultimately have to pay. Maybe $79?? It will show you the files it can recover, but won't let you actually recover them until you pay.

I'm assuming Robocopy doesn't have any type of "undo" capability.

Hi, we are migrating a very large amount of data and we are using robocopy. Everything seems to work fine but now we find  thousands of files having the time stamp reset to 1-1-1980.
After many many tests we now sure the the /B switch is causing this issue (in our case).

But we MUST use the /B switch. Otherwise we will have big problems with access denied errors. to user data.
Now my question is how to solve this issue and keep using the /B switch.
The cmd line we are using is:
robocopy "%source%" "%target%" /MIR /NODCOPY /COPY:DAT /DCOPY:T /r:0 /w:0 /mt:32 /tee /v /fft /np /TIMFIX /xa:sh /xd $RECYCLE.BIN /log+:x:\mylogs\copylog.log

Hi all
I have just found Robocopy and it seems the perfect tool for what I am trying to do....
I make an incremental Backup on one of my PC's (Called Server-PC) every day using AOMEI backupper and I want to mirror that folder on my main PC I have been fiddling with Robocopy for hours now have Googled everything I can think of and can't find out what I am doing wrong.

First of all I Mapped my E:\ drive on My Main PC onto my Server-PC and called it Z:
Using this script --- robocopy "D:\AOMEI" "Z\ServerDriveCopy" /R:5 /s /purge /COPYALL as a test I Get
Source : D:AOMEI\
Destination : C:\Users\mike\Desktop\Z\ServerDriveCopy\

It starts and then says "There is not enough space on the disk" There is still 700gb empty on the disk! I have checked if Quota's have been enabled and they haven't so can't work this out!

I just found out there is a GUI for Robocopy so I tried that and made a slightly different script:
robocopy "D:\AOMEI" "Z:\ServerDriveCopy" /MIR /S /V /NP /Z /R:10 /W:30 (The only difference is the colon after Z !
and that goes MAD keeps repeating in the cmd window forever but no error message and no files get copied.

So I tried it without using the mapped drive which gives me :
robocopy "D:\AOMEI" "\\Main\e\ServerDriveCopy"
and that says "Access Denied" !
I can drag and drop files in explorer OK so I am stumped.

If any one can help I would be very grateful
Mike

Good morning Bleeping Computer community,

I have the strangest thing happening in my Recent Files list on my Windows 10 computer.  Files with a ZERO byte size, NO create date, NO modify date and with name in Chinese characters appear in the Recent Files list.  This is the third time in 2 weeks I have noticed a batch of such files.  Below, I will paste in the file names that appear.  I tried copying the names into Google Translate, but that did not provide anything I understood.
These files do NOT exist if I browse to my desktop.  They are not it the Recycle Bin either.  I have unchecked all the HIDE options for File Explorer.

2) Scan with Malware Bytes:  A few PUP that I removed.

Since those actions, the most recent batch of them appeared.  It seems a few repeat and here are the file names...

Started using robocopy to do my backups. In my command lines, i can specify directories on a external drive to backup to.Some directories show up and i see everything. My most important directory " my documents" DOESNT SHOW UP. I have confirmed a backup is occuring, via log file and properties on the backup folder. I edited it down to a backup of only that folder. Log file shows good, external drive shows the "backup" root directory and properties ( size, number of files) match log file. Open up the backup folder, NOTHING LISTED. I have to run the script as adminstrator , my user is admin also, but if i run it as myself, it cant access the folder. I think im dealing with a right issue, i have edited security on the external drive, even reformatted it , still nothing shows up.

Last week I used a robocopy tutorial on this site to create a backup script, and it was working fine. Today I tried to run this script, inputting new destination information but leaving everything else the same, and now it is copying all of the folders, but none of the files.

It counts a total of 509 Dirs but 0 files--no skipped, no mismatch, no failed.

My syntax/options are as follows:
robocopy "source folder" "destination folder" /E /tee /log.Public_backup log.txt
robocopy "source folder" "destination folder" /E /tee /log.Training_backup log.txt
pause

Does anyone see what might be causing this problem or have suggestions?

The source folder is directory:\folder and the destination folder is directory:\folder\subfolder\subfolder, if that matters.

A:Issue with Robocopy only copying folders, not files, in Windows 7

It should default to all files (*.*), but you could put the *.* in the command to see if it makes a difference.
i.e.
robocopy "source folder" "destination folder" *.* /E /tee /log.Public_backup log.txt

If that doesn't work can you post the actual commands you are using, with the real folder names ?

I have a problem with a program not saving preset data. Possibly due to harlink extenstion with only one piece of software.

I use symbolic hardlinks on my system but I do not know if the following has any bearing on the issue with the software I am using.

The software is a plugin that works within a host digital audio workstation software (Steinberg Cubase and plugin Soundtoys V5) and uses presets for different settings.

All software is legit and registered. I have contacted the developer regarding the issue with no resolve so trying here as the issue may largely be to do with windows.

The associate plugin has been installed with admin permissions and the host DAW software is run with full administrative rights. I have double checked that there are no hardlink main or subfolders used in the installation path for the plugin software.

All other 3rd party plugins work fine when saving presets and using symbolic links of which there's about 60+ 3rd party plugins installed using the main host system, however this particular software is not saving correctly.

It will save the preset name as a zero byte file and reports unable to save at location.

All other plugins work fine even when using symbolic links when saving preset data.

The issue may have been to do with a previous install of the soundtoys software as a phantom install directory is being created during the installation

These are "Locked files". That could not be tested by my antivirus...

"C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat.LOG";"Locked file. Not tested.";"Locked file. Not tested."

"C:\pagefile.sys

Are these safe???

A:Are these files names viruses or normal xp64bit files???

I cannot be 100% certain about the first two but I strongly suspect they are normal files. I do know for certain that pagefile.sys is a legitimate file. During normal operation some files are locked for exclusive access by a specific process and cannot be accessed by any other. Naturally, this also prevents an anti-virus program from testing them. This is normal.

I'm sure this is possible, but maybe I'm just tired tonight. I've 2 files that are similar but not identical in layout. For the current exercise I want to extract 7 fields that DO appear in both tables and are named the same. I don't actually care which table they come from, I just want to extract the fields into 1 table.

sql1 = "select col1, col2 , col4, col7 " &_
" from table1; "

sql2 = "select col1, col2 , col4, col7 " &_
" from table2; "
I'm working in vb - how do I get the outputs to concatenate or the OpenRecordset to have both sql's. It would make the rest of the code some much simpler. I want to read through the output and perform a calculation, but this will not be written back to the file; the information will be used to create a new file for reporting purposes only.

I was wondering if there is a program out there that redirects access to certain websites, similar to editing the host files but using two web addresses instead of having to use an IP address.

This is just an example of course, I want to do the redirect for more then just firefox, I want it to change for absolutely any program I choose.

I don't want to have to change the host files of every computer I go onto, or change the router settings of every network I'm on.

Non-permanent changes are preferred.

?? I don't know what happened? all of a suddened I can't change the Names of My Picture Files or my Video Files I imported from my dig. camcorder?

When I try to change the name of my files, it tells me If i change the name It would make it Invalid? what happned!!! Help!!!!!! Thank you!!!

A:Help! I can't change the names of my Files!!

calm down it's a safety procedure. You need to make sure that you have the file extension at the end of the file for it to work in your program. For example

import.avi - if you change the filename to export then Windows won't know what program to open the file up because there is no extension. If you change import.avi to export.avi, then it sees the extension and renames the file.

So basically when you rename the file, make sure the .avi (or whatever the 3 letter extension is) is left when you rename the file.

Hi,

I'm using Windows XP (with SP2) and I've got a few files on my computer that I can't do anything with because the filenames are too long. If I double click them, they don't open and if I right click I get a different menu with only six menu items. If I select open from the list, I get an error saying there was a problem with the file. I can't rename or copy the files.

Please could someone tell me how to get these files to work?

Thanks,
Joe

Hey guys.

This may sound not important or maybe stupid, but for someone who shops online, I'm always wary.

Basically, I made a few PowerPoint presentations with dates for my exams. I named them 'Exam Timetables'. After I check back a week later, it's 'exam timetables' with the capitals missing. Again, I know it sounds pathetic, but I just highly doubt that these file names would change so randomly on it's own accord. I really don't want to start shopping online only to have card details taken. My worst fear is that something is accessing my files, because I have some sensitive files on my computer with info I'd rather not have in the wrong hands.

Is this file name change normal or is there something on my computer? And if so, what can I do about it?

Any advice is appreciated! I am using Windows Vista.

I have installed MalwareBytes and recently it has found a few potentially unwanted programs, mainly from that MyWebSearch which I have never been on, nor can think of anyway they could have been installed.

Thanks,

Lena.

I have a dozen directories and each has 50 or more files in them.
I would like to see all the directories combined into one list alphabetically.
Is their a simple way of extracting file names from Explorer (actually I use Free Commander)and list them out?
Thanks

A:database of files names

If you are talking about system files...I would not consider moving them or consolidating them. Windows expects to find them where they were originally installed and changing the locations will probably be tantamount to deleting them, with subsequent Windows hiccups.

Ditto for file created by programs you have installed.

If you are talking about data files...these can normally be moved anywhere, at any time. But programs which have previously accessed the files at a given location may have to be redirected to the new paths.

I have a directory that has 150 files in it. I need to email the filenames (not the files just the names of the files.) It seems that I recall doing this years ago but have forgotten how and can't figure it out now.

A:copying file names but not the files

Open notepad. Paste:

Quote:

cd %1
dir /a /b /-p /o:gen >C:\filelist.txt
start notepad C:\filelist.txt

Then go to File > Save As and then select "All Files". Then save as "yourfilename.bat" WITH the quotes and the .bat extention. Then copy this file to the directory where you want to record the files and double click to run. It will run and then a notepad window will open with a listing of all of the files in that folder.

i have a lot of files with long names that are too long to be burned as they are (longer than 60 characters). i want to burn the files but i also don't want to lose the names -and i definitely don't want to spend too much time on this.

a simple way of doing this would be to make an html gallery with the full names listed as links leading to files with trimmed names -but unfortunately with no coding knowledge, i have no idea how to actually do this in a simple, automated way (i have hundreds, if not thousands of files to sort through).

...in addition, some of these files actually have yet to be given their extended names; the first 6+ characters of the extended names and the current name/acceptable names for burning are the same, and the long form names are listed in a txt file.

so, here is what i have:
- a txt file with a list of extended names only for files with short names beginning with format YYMMDD
- files with short names beginning with format YYMMDD
- files with long names beginning with format YYMMDD
- no coding experience
- vista, xp and linuxmint11

what i want is to create some sort of commonly accessible user interface where the long form names are retained and will link to files with the short form names and for the whole shebang to be burned to dvd.

is there some way to do this quickly? help?

I have a 64-bit Windows 8.1 HP. It came pre-installed 7-Zip. When I extract it changes the file names automatically upon extraction.

On my old Windows 7 desktop I had WinZip and this never happened. So I purchased and installed WinZip on the Windows 8.1 and the same thing happened, it changed the file name automatically.

I have tried all over the net and on this site to find a solution but to no avail. I also compared WinZip settings on the W7 and I can't really tell if they are the same as it is different on W8.1

My real concern is that when I extract the folder, it changes the files names adding additional characters where there would be spaces and then an extension of numbers.
Windows 7 did not do this at all. Please help!!! How can I turn this off?

Open the folder to see the thumbnails.
Hold the Shift key down and click on the View button and select Details.
Remove your finger from the Shift key. You will now see file names.

Hi! Hope someone can help me with this?

I had an old DOS program called POET (from 8-9yrs ago) which generated random poetry based on adjectives you described. Now this program also had a file called COLOR.COM whose file name, etc appeared in Blue, even in windows.

The trouble is that most of my files are turning blue now! I am using windows xp. Is this just a memory resident color changing thing or is it more like an infection? And how can I get rid of this? No viruses have been detected on the system with Norton 2003.

A wierd problem but hopefully someone has a clue about whats really happening? Appreciate your time...thanks!

If you know why it might be doing this, please let me know why, and if you know of a fix. Thanks.

When I take them out, their names turn into $RE0HPI9 and $RX5JNJA.txt, which don't represent the original file name at all...
http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/6...creenshot4.png

The curious thing is, the file inside the renamed folder is still the same name as it was before I put it in the recycle bin.

A:Recycle Bin mis-names recovered files

How are you taking them out of the recycle bin? If you drag and drop or right click and move then they get the weird names you show. If you right click on a file and select Restore then it will be put back where it came from with the original name.

I am trying to help someone recover his e-mail from a trashed OS on a disk that no longer boots. We have connected the disk to another fully-functional computer; but, I don't know where to look for the files that are Thunderbird's e-mail.

A:Names/locations of Thunderbird's e-mail files?

From the Thunderbird FAQ's (always the simplest place to look first)...
http://www.mozilla.org/support/thunderbird/faq#q2.10

"How do I export e-mail messages to another mail program or computer?
Thunderbird's mail files are in the standard plain text "mbox" format, which almost all mail programs can use or import. Many proprietary mail programs have a function to import from Eudora, which also uses the "mbox" format; this function should read your Mozilla mail files properly.

Your mail files are inside your profile (see the Profile Folder), in the Mail and (if you use IMAP) ImapMail folders. Each mail folder (Inbox, Sent, etc.) is stored as two files one with no extension (e.g. INBOX), which is the mail file itself (in "mbox" format), and one with an .msf extension (e.g. INBOX.msf), which is the index (Mail Summary File) to the mail file. Tell the other program to import mail from the file with no extension.

If you want to transfer a mail file to another Mozilla profile or another installation of Mozilla, simply put the mail file into the other installation's Mail folder."

From the above you should be able to determine the locations and filenames that you want?

This must be very simple to you computer experts.

A friend left my country and returned to the States. But she left her pendrive behind. I call it pendrive but in many places they call it flashdrive. Same thing we are talking about I believe.

It contained only a small variety of country music that barely made a dent in her 8 GB flashdrive.

She apparently is no fan of classical music except for Chopin and other relaxing stuff. But she is curious.

I think that, if she begins to listen to some other classical music, of which I have a vast collection, she may begin to appreciate some. There are very many composers who have produced smoothing tracks like the ones she says she likes. Even J.S. Bach, whom she says she cannot bear.

I copied different tracks from different composers and put each composer in a folder + some important tracks of a few composers on another folder.

For instance, I put Bach (a small selection of works) in one folder, but opened another folder for Brandemburg concertos and another for major organ works.

In the case of Mozart there is one folder dedicated exclusively to his famous Requiem.

In all, I created 101 folders in the pendrive and filled it up. And 7.48 GB of music is a hell f a lot of music.

But I am a music fan and have a very extensive collection from which I chose some tracks and, depending on the composer, put those tracks in a folder which I named by the Composer's name.

However I still have a link to Daz in my start menu and the file under that says that there is 0 bytes to the file. When I run a search for Daz 3d I end up with this huge list of file names that won't delete and when I try I get this error message:

Could not find this item

this is no longer located in FILE NAME ADDRESS. Verify the item's location and try again.

To which I want to say "no duh" since I deleted the folder in that location. I've checked my uninstall programs area and nothing is listed. I've run CCleaner including the registry cleaner. I'm at my wits end. Help?

A:File names remaining after files have been deleted

You can safely delete the shortcut in the Start menu yourself. If you want to make sure there are no remnants of the program you can use Revo Uninstaller

How can I find out which of my files path names were too long?

I'm backing up my files from one external drive to another (just dragged a giant folder over and waited over a day for it to paste the entire thing), now I come to read "The file name(s) would be too long for the destination folder. You can shorten the file name and try again, or try a location with a shorter path." The destination folder saimply reads "CD2", which could literally be anything. What's the entire path?

I've got Windows 7.

So I'd gladly shorten whatever path(s) and try again, but how do I read entire path of which files were too long to be in which destination folder?

Don't know what to do, the window is still popped up that has the option of either "Skip" or "cancel" along which a check box at the bottom that reads "do this for all current items (11 found)", I haven't clicked anything yet. WHICH ELEVEN CURRENT ITEMS FOUND ARE TOO LONG??

I'm not very good with computers so feel free to treat me as a child.

A:How can I find out which of my files path names were too long?

If I remember right a CD can handle up to 124 charters in the file name and path. You will find that most of the OS area may have to long of a file name path for most of it.

This name path includes not just the PATH, but also the file name AND extension.

I am in the process of cleaning a system. I have emptied all the temp folders, content.ie5 folders, scanned for and removed viruses and run CHKDSK /R to correct errors in the file table as well as run MalwareBytes' Antimalware and rebooted several times; but, I have a few files left behind that have excessively long names that resist deletion, resist renaming and resist moving.

I haven't actually counted the number of characters in the names; but, I am guessing there are about 150 or more of just random characters.

Example name:
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111.exe

They are all contained within the various Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\xxxxxxxx folders.

I've tried deltree /y, tried rd /y /q and I've tried simply right-click and delete on their containing folders.

When I transfer a file from a folder to a CD, example, after the files have been
copied to the CD, as I do not need those files there anymore, I send them to
the Trash bin, but somehow they remain on the same folder with 0 bytes.

I have tried everything to make the names of those files disappear with no
success. Disk Clean Up has failed and other programs as well.

I have observed that this particular behaviour happens mainly with .pps files
They remain on my PPS folder but with o bytes.

How can I remove them from the folders?

A:Removing deleted files names from folders

Lame but try SHIFT+DEL for each of the particular files - this will remove the files straight away without sending them to the Recycle Bin.

Hi Guys,

I've managed to get two directories with the same files in them but different versions, it's a total of over 300 files.

Some of the latest versions are in one directory but some of the latest versions are in the other.

If I try to copy the files from one to the other, windows will either overwrite or skip the files, not much help.

What I need to do is to only overwrite the file if the existing file is older.

I bet it's really simple, but I can't think how to do it.

Looking forward to hearing from you (please be gentle).

Dear Forum Users
Kindly help. I just bought a Samsung ATIV Pro with Windows 8. There was a default user Alison Brown. I changed the user name to my daughter's name as the Administrator.
We took some pictures using the Camera in the Camera Roll.
However suddenly (a day after this), the machine simply rebooted and it reverted back to Alison Brown. Cant understand what happened. All files saved earlier with the changed name seem lost. Cant find them anywhere.
Any ideas what happened and how I can get these files back?

Thank you for any help in this!

I had a HDD in an external enclosure. Something got messed up (I think it was disconnected by accident during a file transfer) and now when I plug it in, the drive is recognized in "My Computer" and disk management but it says that the drive is not formatted and asks me if I want to format it. I had data on it that wasn't backed up (Doh!) so I plugged it into one of my computers and tried a couple of recovery programs. I was able to recover most of my files but it seems the recovery programs can't get the original file names. (It names the files recoveredfile01.pdf, recoveredfile02.doc etc.) Since it would take me hours to rename every file I am trying to find a way to recover the names too. Anyone know of any programs/methods that would do this? Obviously the files are still there... I would assume the names are there somewhere also. For your information: I am running Windows XP Pro and the HDD was formatted in FAT32. Thanks for your help!

I work mainly on two computers: My laptop, which runs Windows XP Home Edition and my desktop, which runs Windows XP Pro. Both OS's are fully up to date with all windows updates and security packs installed (sp3).

I have a portable hard drive which I keep my music on. I renamed some files on there while working on the laptop, some of which have pretty long file names. I had no problem renaming them or editing them after I had given them the long file names on the laptop.

But, when I move my portable hard drive over to my desktop, XP seems to have a problem with files that exceed 63 characters in file name length. I cannot rename them, I cannot edit them, I cannot move/copy them to another folder... I cannot even right click on them and ask for 'Properties' on them. If I try to access the files through other programs than Windows Explorer (i.e. iTunes or Winamp), it's like the files aren't even there. The programs will not recognize them as files either.

Can anybody please give me some help with this? What could be the problem here...? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would like to print out a list of names of scanned image files in a single folder, but cannot seem to find an easy way of doing this, except if I do a screen capture of the folder, but I would like to make the list into a spreadsheet or database file.

I would also like to apply this to music files later.

Tried Nero 6.3 "Print Disk Cover" but do not see a way there either. Windows help files do not appear to have any info either. Nor does highlighting all names, then trying to Copy then Paste into a wordprocessor.

This is Windows XP, if it was a Mac I would not have a problem!

I suppose that broadly speaking my question does come under 'security'. I use on-line banking & on-line billing & had a number of Excel docs. on my PC.that stored info.relating to these on-line functions. I recently re-hashed all these docs.,but copied much of the info.over to the new docs.I then shredded the old docs.using
'File Shredder'. I then ran 'Recuva' in order to see if they'd been erased, the docs.had, but the file names were still shown with the names that i'd given them. Now there's no info.that could be used directly by anyone ie.account nos.etc.,but the fact that the doc.names are given shows info.about my banking & billing.
I contacted 'Piriform' regarding this & they told me to run the 'wipe free space' function in the Gutman mode,as the info.is stored (apparently) within my PC's MFT
(Master File Table). Can the MFT be erased in that way,or am i simply going to spend 8 hours on a useless 'driver wipe' ?.Any info.(f a non-tech. nature)would be deeply appreciated,

A:How can you remove file names of 'shredded' files/folders ?

I think you're best to wipe your free disk space for another reason: when Excel saves a file, it does not overwritte the existing file, but it creates a new file with a random file name. Then it deletes the existing file, and renames the new file to the name of the existing file it deleted.

So this means that there are many deleted (thus "unshredded") copies of your Excel spreadsheets on your disk.

All MS Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, ...) save files like this. I know Office 2003 and older behaves like this, not sure for newer versions.

Very odd. My laptop has two HDs and on one of them something has happened to make the names of all the folders and files appear in blue text, rather than black. Stranger still. When I transfer any of these files or folders to another machine, the blue is transferred as well. I can't find any setting that would cause this. Any ideas what has happened and how I can revert back to black?

Howdy folks!

Here's a weird one. Went over to a friend's house today to work on there computer as it 'wasn't working right'.

I noticed that all the icons on the desktop had their names changed to include numbers (ex Chrome(2345)), Inter Explorer(2942). The numbers seem to be random. Obviously trying to launch one of these did not work.

I then went into the Program Files folder and its seemed all the exe files and dll files were also renamed to include numbers...

I have never seen this before, and doing a search through these forums, and malware removal guides, it doesn't seem to have a fix (other than manually renaming the files one at a time, removing the number part.

I have included a screen shot for reference. In the screen shot I renamed the Itunes.exe, but it still would not run because the dll files are 'missing'.

Thanks for any input, but I think we are looking at a backup--->rebuild at this point.

I am trying out Outlook 2003 seriously for the first time.

All my programs allow me to easily install them on drive C and the user-created data in any other place of my choice (drive D). Example: All programs on my computer are installed on drive C while their associated user data is on drive D. This makes backing up all user-created data every two hours by automated process simple and very fast.

Outlook 2003 (not Express) is giving me a lot of trouble with this.

How do I teach Outlook 2003 to recognize a PST file, address book and any other related user files stored in a location different from where it wants to put it? Also, I would like to be able to rename them from Qutlook.PST to maybe Alex.PST and the address book accordingly.

A:Solved: Manipulating names and locations of Outlook's PST and WAB files?

Outlook 2003 really isn't that different from the previous versions. Close Outlook and copy your pst and pab file to where you want them. Rename them also. Open Outlook and it will prompt you for the location(s). Just browse to your D drive and locate them.

Once everything is working you can delete the old copies of both. I suggest copy instead of move just in case something goes wrong.

Hi,
I have recently been in the process of encrypting some sensitive information on my external hard drive, and I would like to go one more step in securing my data.

So far, I have encrypted the hard drive using "TrueCrypt", so the hard drive is only accessable by entering a a 16 digit password.

I now want to randomize the names of each file in the hard drive.

I need a batch file that can do this for me.
It should go through any subfolders in the hard drive, and randomize the name of each file (excluding the extension)

Anyone know how to do this?

Hello

Windows Vista Home Premium Addition.

I was having a virus which shows a blank screen after we do winlogin as it was activating a ~.exe files and CTRL ALT DEL and was not working. Fixed the problem by deleting the files and updatign the registry entry.

New problem started after this now can login to computer and it gets slower after sometime.

Registry editing is disabled by adminstrator
Task Manger is is disabled by adminstrator

using the option F8 can enter the system and modify the registry entries but they are restored back to old after the next restart.

Tried to restore the system to previous points but after the process get error exception problem and the things are not restored to any previous points.

Found that after winlogin is done there are 2 exe files are created in directory username\appdata\temp and they are loaded in memory also. There are 3 temp files associated with it also in same directory.

It has also made appdata as hidden directory.

If we delete these files in next reboot they are created with new names and loaded to memory.

Which virus is causing this please help.

Hello,
Right hopefully this is an easy one to sort.
Basically I make my own music using synths and Ableton Live 5 (great product).
Then I render the files to .wav format (using Ableton) and name the tracks to burn onto a CD using Nero (pretty recent version and I normally just use the startsmart interface).

What I've noticed is that Nero sometimes sets the artist's name to the same as the track name by default. (I don't do any setting of the artist's name. Ableton merely names the .wav file when it renders it)

Or even more annoyingly, sometimes it will break the track name into two and put half of it as the track name and half as the artist's name. I have noticed use of certain characters such as ' can cause this.

So my question is two-fold.

How can I get Nero to simply use the track name I've selected, correctly and in full, and not apply any information to the artist's name field?

And if I wished to put information seperately into the artist's name field and get that on the CD, how can I do that? Because some of my tracks are collaborations and I wish to acknowledge that.

many thanks,
Jonathan

A:Nero changing track and artists names of .wav files during burning

It looks like Nero takes the filename and assumes the format is Artist - Title, so the file aaa - bbb.wav will be aaa for the artist and bbb for the title. So the easiest thing to do is name your files in that format.

However you can edit the 2 fields if you want to. In the Nero Express file list, right-click on a song and choose properties. You can edit both Title and Artist.
