Q: Desktop icon problem, programs in start menu problem and more...

Hello guys,

For some reason my computer have some problem(s) that I don't know where it come from and how to solve it.
I got this problem for 3 days and I have tried to fix it but to no avail and i have pretty much lost hope, because I have some important documents for school etc. and videos, pictures that i dont want to lose it and I have a presentation over 3 weeks.....and I am regretting not having made a backup..>.<

Here are the issues:

When I try to log in on my computer I get a message that says:
"The group policy client service failed the logon, Access denied."
Then it log off and returned to the profile selection screen.

After that I tried to log in via "Safe mode" and it work without getting the message:
"The group policy client service failed the logon, Access denied."

But here comes my next problem. (Those problems is only on safe mode since I cant log in normally):

When I log in via Safe mode, my desktop icons are gone and my background is black. Also some of my programs in my startmenu are gone.

On my "computer" (windows+E or via the startmenu) some folders on the left panel are gone. When i right click and click on " show all folders" nothing happen.

See screenshot/link: ( I hope the screenshot is big enough...)

Things that I tried:

1. Chkdsk (doesnt find any problem)
2. SFC/scannow (found some corrupted files)
3. System restore (didn't help at all...)

My other problem is (also in safe mode):
In my profile: c:/users/eric (personal profile) I only got:

Here is the screenshot of it:

But what is causing this problems? is it the userprofile or??
Well I will not try to fix my computer now, that if i do something wrong that all my files are deleted (videos, pictures, documents and files that were on my desktop). Unless there is a solution =/.
Or is there is a way for me to extract my videos, pictures and documents to my external hdd and then reinstall windows7??

There was a sudden power failure and my computer turned off suddenly. When the power came back and I turmed on the computer, there was no other problem except with the desktop icons. The icons are split apart and joined in opposite direction. The icon names appear ok. Any new icons created after that appear normal. I have scanned the computer with updated norton antivirus, registry mechanic and spyware doctor, all of which show no problem. Running scf/ scannow command does not show any problem either. How to solve the problem ? Is this because of viruses ? Please help.

A:Desktop and Start Menu Icon Problem

Hi there...

why don't you just delete all the broken icons and recreate them all from scratch?

It's unlikely to be a virus but that's still a possibility considering your PC shut itself off for no reason...but this could also point to problems elsewhere. Monitor the situation for now and if it happens again, see if you can notice a trend i.e, whether it happens when you're running a certain program or game, if it happens at the same time daily etc :)

So I upgraded to Windows 10 and so far everything seems to be working fine however the one problem I've had is a problem with the icons for Google Chrome and Origin on the start menu. The Chrome icon is really over sized compared to what it should be and is on a black background and the Origin icon has a black background. I've looked everywhere online and can't find a solution, I don't really want to reinstall Google Chrome, I reinstalled origin and it didn't fix it. I know that there must be a fix because they are working fine on my sisters laptop.

Please can someone help me find a solution
This is what it looks like:
I want it to look like my sisters does:
Also even though I've tried updating it, chrome still looks like the windows 7 version than the windows 10.

Well its sorta hard to explain but as they say a picture says a thousand words. So look at the picture . Basically what windows is doing is it's displaying the entire contents of the "My Programs" folder instead of the normal display for a program that only includes the exe, uninstall and related things. As you can see its displaying every folder and every object inside those folders. Any help to restore this to a normal state would be nice. Thanks

I am JayPeez and I am having a problem with the programs in my Start Menu. It all started when I open a web page file (which is in Mozilla and is stored in my flash drive) with Internet Explorer. The next thing I know is that all my file folders in my flash drive have an Internet explorer extension so their icon appears to that of the Internet explorer. The same thing happens to all my programs in my Start menu. Whenever I want to open a program, the Internet explorer browser will be displayed so I was not able to open the program I want. The programs can only be opened appropriately when I click the Safe Run. However, I still can open my programs by accessing it through its file location and in there I can open it successfully. However, it is tiring to do so. And even I was able to open it right, its icon that is displayed in my task bar is still that of Internet explorer.

I would be very grateful if anyone can help me with this problem. I have tried everything with the Control Panel and Help and Support, yet I still was not able to solve it.

Here is my problem. Few days ago, my notebook went crazy. First of all, all of my desktop icons are gone, except for recycle bin. All programs from start menu are gone too. First i thought it was a virus or a trojan, so i tried to download some antispyware programs, but it always gives me error message "internet explorer cannot download xxx(name of the program)...." as an explanation it says that "IE was not able to open this internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later."
So i copied Hijack this from my other notebook, and run a scan. below are the results.
One other thing is my desktop. I can't change the background picture, just the color which turns back to light blue after every restart. Also, after restart theme always turns to "modified theme", and keyboar turns to USA (I'm from Croatia)

I shot a quick video of the issue:

When we switch themes, the orb reappears but functionality does not return to normal, then the orb will disappear again and be replaced with "Start" written in text. No odd group policies are enabled (not that I am aware of), the default theme is aero, the machine is completely up to date. Rebooting temporarily fixes the issue, but returns shortly thereafter to no rhyme or reason. I am grateful for any suggestions.

Which theme is that? Any problems with the default theme? What of a system restore, esp. if this is a recent problem.

My computer is an HP pavilion dv7 1260us and I'm using windows vista 64 bit. Today my computer froze while running a complete scan using AVG free edition. I turned off the laptop using the power button and ever since then, my desktop keeps freezing up Ina way. Any time i click on an icon or the start menu after the desktop has loaded, the mouse icon turns into the busy symbol. The task manager won't open either after I press ctrl +alt + del. I have tried restarting my computer in safe mode and running the avg scan again but that either causes the computer to overheat and shut down or the computer freezes up halfway through the scan. I ran chkdsk once which took about 5 hours to complete and I am still having problems. The only thing I have downloaded/updated recently has been ccleaner which I did earlier in the day. Could having this program along with AVG be causing my computer to freeze up? I've had both these programs on my computer for about a year without any problems.

I've looked around the internet for anyone who had a problem like this but
i havent found a single forum anywhere that helps so..

I run 64-bit windows vista and recently i downloaded Grand Chase to it.
The first day it worked just fine but today after experiencing some heavy lag
spikes,i restarted my computer and when i tried to open grandchase from the
desktop shortcut(Ran as administer)The desktop just froze. So i tried running it from
the start menu but it did the same, only when i tried to click anything in the start menu
after trying to run Grand Chase,it just gave me a "bing" sound. The only solution to unfreezing
the two is to log off and back onto my computer but Grand Chase still wont work.

I dont think it's the game itself but rather my computer, since i had this same issue before
with yahoo messenger but i cant remember what i did,if anything,to fix it but Yahoo messenger
works just fine now..System restore is out of the question, since the last checkpoint it's made was
sometime in 2011 which i used once before and was basically restored back to a horrible point where
i had alot of viruses and things ran extremely slow with no norton security or anything to help it..

Anybody have some ideas..?I'm able to reinstall the game via safe mode but when i go back to
normal mode it's the same story retold from point A.

A:Computer desktop/start menu freeze when i try to start certain programs

You can try installing Game Booster and running Grand Chase via Game Booster, and see if that helps.

Hi everyone.
I installed Win 7 Ultimate recently on top of my Vista Home 64bit, Vaio laptop. Setup archive was downloaded from microsoft website.

Installation was fine, first start up was fine. But after second reboot my desktop stopped loading, its was just a blue screen with sign at the right bottom corner - Windows 7 Ultimate Build 7010 or something. Couple times I pressed ctrl-alt-del and started dwm.exe and explorer.exe manually once again (although these 2 processed were already in the list) and was managed to run desktop.

Yesterday I installed some IE8 and Office updates and changed theme to Aero, and now after reboot Im getting same thing with black screen, but dwm.exe and explorer.exe does not help anymore (again, they present in the list of processes), no desktop, no start menu.

I use firefox with noscript plugin, user account and antivirus software, so I dont have any virus issues or something. This trouble began right after installation is over.

What can It be? How do I solve it?
Thanks, Alex

I use Windows 7 Pro and install many time to end user, haven't found this kind of problem ( see attachment ). It doesn't occur immediately and sometime not happen.

At first I call the PC service and they found out that there is problem with the hard disk ( using the diagnostic tools ). So they change the hard disk.

After reinstall all the system it appear again, but this time when i check using the diagnostic tools they not indicate any problem.

Does anybody ever occur with this problem ?

I'm totally befuddled. I have a program I run from a .exe that is in Programs(X86) file. I can put a shortcut on the Desktop. But the icon does not show in All Apps and I cannot figure out a way to a) get in the All Apps, and b) create a tile on the Start page.

It seems to me that you could drag and drop, but that doesn't work. The above is just one issue - I'm trying to move ALL my taskbar items and desktop items to the Windows 10 tiles, and can see no easy way to do it, because I can't drag and drop. What am I missing here?

I have experienced a sudden problem starting programs. The computer boots correctly, and all desktop icons appear correctly. But when I double click a desktop icon, or start a program from the start menu, I get a popup window displaying a list of programs and asking me which program I want to use to start the application. I select the correct program (or browse to the appropriate .exe file), but still the application doesn't start. This includes IE and Windows Messenger. My virus scanner was about the only thing that I could start up, and I did a system scan with Panda Anti-Virus, but it didn't show anything substantial (just some cookies).Using my WinXP set up disk, I've tried to do a repair (I guess reinstallation without reformatting the hard disk), but after I entered the License Key, the computer did a reboot and then stopped. It is stuck on the XP splash screen and won't go any further (I once let it run over night, but it was still frozen on the splash screen). I even tried to repeat the repair process, but that didn't work.Automatic updates did download an update just before this problem started (I think it was the day before the problems began). I don't know what this update was and I'm not sure it was SP3 (system does have SP2 installed).Considering that the computer freezes now when booting up, is there anything that I can do short of reformatting the Hard Drive???? I had a problem where my computer started up what seemed like normal, but without the normal programs loaded that are usually in the task bar at the bottom right. I tried to double click an icon on the desktop and a window popped up with a list of applications asking me what program I wanted to use to start the program I clicked on. This happened for all icons on my desktop, any program/application I chose from the START > PROGRAMS menu list, and any .EXE program I double clicked in any folder I navigated to through the MY COMPUTER folder. The only thing that did work was Internet Explorer which allowed me to find a small "registry fix" file that I downloaded and ran. Of course I started to freak out because I couldn't find a way to urgently run a thorough virus/malware scan by opening and starting my Avast antivirus and all other tools I use to clean and fix my computer!!!

The "registry fix" worked but I want to better understand the problem I had so I can fix it if I (hopefully never) ever run across it again.

Anybody tell me what was the problem and how to correctly fix it the next time? Thanks much for any and all help.

First of all: I am by no means a technical genius (Google got me this far) and my technical lingo/knowledge is limited. In other words ... if suggested solutions to my problem were to be posted in a not-too-technical language and thoroughly explained, you'd make me very happy. My troubles originated when I got a virus on my PC: SMART HDD, a rogue scanner.Google led me to this guide ( to manually removing the virus and I followed the first 6 steps without encountering any problems.Step 7 is where I first encountered one of my current problems:"7: Now you can unhide all files and folders that has been hidden by Smart HDD. Today I experienced some sort of crash and subsequently have not had any desktop icons or program files in the start menu. I am running XP SP3. I had Outlook 2007, Internet Explorer 8, and CYMA (an accounting software) running. IE crashed, I reopened. A few minutes later, all three programs crashed, all desktop icons were gone, and about thirty pop-ups warning about registry errors came up (unfortunately I did not write down the errors). I attempted a restart, upon which the system indicated that a registry error occurred, but had been corrected. At this time, I noticed that no icons appeared on the desktop. When I selected the start menu to restart again, no programs or short cuts were present in the menu. Under all programs, the folders were present but all are labeled "empty" (including folders within Accessories, such as System Tools). I was also unable to right or left click on the desktop or to drag and drop anything onto the desktop. Oddly, the task bar was present along with some programs that run at startup (Trend Micro Security Agent, Pervasive, LogMeIn, Adobe Updater).

I attempted to restart in safe mode to the same results. I am able to access all files and programs through the explore function. I also checked the logs and there are no errors showing around the time of the original program crash. I have been able to restore some of the programs/short cuts to the start menu, specifically, IE, Outlook, My Computer, My Documents, Control Panel... Read more

Basically, I can't do anything when I get to my desktop, and if I try to go to the start menu, I just get an hourglass icon and can't click on it. I recently had a few viruses on my computer, some of which have been removed. However, the computer is still not functioning properly:
1. The desktop seems to be locked: I cannot change any settings and the icons are invisible.
2. The programs are invisible on the start menu.
3. Most of the files in my documents got invisible.
4. The performance of computer is very slow.
5. Windows wont let to open some programs (i.e Skype)
I have been using ESET Smart Security 4 and it was updated before all the scans. But it cannot locate more infections.
Could you possibly recommend any other program to scan my computer?

I really dont wanna reformat my computer if i can avoid it. My system restore also wont work. I receive an error when i try and start it up. I'm thinking i have a registry issue. I'm pretty much clueless when it comes to registry problems. Anyways thats it in a nutshell. I run on a Windows XP SP 2. (Also i usually use a monitor for my computer i just hooked up the T.V just for the movie. Not sure if that was the issue either), (Also hope i'm in the right thread for this)

Do you have any system restore points?

As usual, I tell AVG to quarantine the trojan and it does like so. *pets AVG*Now, after I do this, I went to click on "My Documents" and I get a prompt that it says the program can't be found. I click on everyone of my desktop icons and I get the same message. I try to access a few programs from the start menu and I was able to access the control panel and check out my programs list. I scroll through the list and see a program that disguised itself as an HP program. It has a bunch of symbols like this, &///##@, so I knew it was a virus. I've looked everywhere I can imagine and while a lot of people have the same problem as me, I cannot find a single solution. Anyway, I came upon a programs folder in the "all programs" part of my start menu. I clicked it and it looked like just a duplicate of the "all programs." Stupidly, I deleted it and after emptying my recycle bin, "all programs" was empty. I created a new account and copied and moved that start menu to my old one. Copying a pasting seems to have taken up quit a bit of space and the new programs folder doesn't show shortcuts but all the lengthy paths and install files, bin, and things. How do I get my old start menu back?

This started a few weeks ago, don't know how or why.

If i go to Start (globe on lower left), and in "Search programs and files", e.g. type "car", it gives me the info essentially in triplicate - it lists:
"Control Panel (21)";

"Documents (1786)", which lists 5 files;

"Pictures (1786)" which is an exact duplicate of the same 5 files it's listing under "Documents (1786)";

"Files (6614)" which lists 2 files in common with the "Documents"/"Pictures" listing, and 3 other "car" related files.

If I right click on one of the files which is listed in all 3 categories, the path is identical -

C:\Users\NAME [i.e., the name I gave my computer]\Documents
So anotherwords it is NOT listing a file of which there are 3 copies, it is pointlessly listing the same file in 3 separate categories.
The file does not exist in my actual "Pictures" file, only in my actual "Documents" file.

When I place my cursor on one of the files listed in all 3 categories , it highlights the file in all 3 categories.

When I do a Search it used to be very fast, it's now very slow.

I've searched the net for a cause/solution and found none.
I enabled the Search fix tool (forgot what it's called) and it found nothing.

I've considered doing a System Restore, but don't know how long ago this began, I may not be able to go back far enough.

I've also considered having it rebuild the Index... Read more

A couple of weeks ago (well maybe 10 days ago) I turned on my computer to see that the desktop was nothing but the photograph background I usually see. My icons were gone! Taskbar, Start Menu, too.

I tried CTRL-ESC. Didn't work. I tried to run explorer.exe. Didn't work. I can't even access Control Panel (control.exe). I don't have malware or a virus (though I did just do a big clean, but only the speed of my computer improved; I still have to run all my programs through Task Manager), but I think the damage was probably done by a virus or trojan.

I've tried the Fix on Kelly's Korner. I've tried looking at Microcoft's page for help, but I can't find anything. I even tried copying the explorer.exe file from my machine at work and putting it in place of the other explorer file (I kept the original, though renamed it). Nothing has worked. I'm fed up and don't want to have to do a clean install. Can someone help me?

Switched it to the XP start menu (which I've grown to like better) and My Computer, My Network Places and Internet Explorer icons were removed from the desktop. Only recycle bin remained. Switching back to classic puts them back again. Oddly enough, when I was saving a dowload to the desktop (while set up as XP) the My Computer, My Network Places showed in the save to box when pointing at the desktop.

2. On the Start menu ( ie Programs) again all the icons are bigger

4. On my "Quick Launcher" bar all the icons are bigger as well, and on the right hand side of the task bar ie clock and internet connection icon,( the time now is showing the day as well )

note all icons on desktop are fine, I have gone through all the obvious settings and all seem as they should be, as I last reset them. I even tried a system restore, but this would not work??

Your icons look smaller than the default size - have you changed the icon size at all? If you have, it may be that these programs don't have the correct size icons, so the default 'no icon' icon is shown.

What you may want to do is put the actual icon in documents or somewhere else of your chosing. You can then put a short cut on the desktop, chose the icon and it will be the same size as the others.

With short cuts, right click and properies and choose icon.

In addition, if you click on an icon, then hold down control, with the mouse wheel you can choose any size.

My *desktop program icons* are all messed up. See attachments for my screenshot.

As you can see in the red circle, there appears to be "layers of icons" for each program. Yet when I open a window or go elsewhere, the problem is not there. It happens only in desktop.

Obviously there is no issue with loading the correct icon. The problem is two fold:
- why the "second layer" of that ugly 8 bit .ico image?
- why on my desktop only?

I've been playing a lot with my desktop and icons recently. But I'm not sure what exactly triggered this. For example I am scatterbrained and lately I've been cleaning up my desktop. I had a work project dealing with fireworks and I wanted easier access to that folder. So I gave the folder a custom icon (a fireworks symbol). I did this 10+ times successfuly in the past with no problems for months. Now I did the same exact thing again with the fireworks and I guess I tripped some invisible wire...

Thank you sincerely for any person who wants to take a stab at the root cause of this.

Please do not post using all capital letters, mainly because it's considered to be the online equivalent of shouting which is just plain bad manners, but also because it makes for difficult reading. Many forum helpers will simply ignore such posts, so it's in your own interests not to do it.As to your desktop shortcuts problem, check the "Properties" of each shortcut, in particular where it says "Start in:"in there it should have the full path to the folder which contains the executable file for that application, wrapped in quotes. As an example, for the Firefox icon's properties, the "Start in:" box should say "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox"

Just moved to Windows 7.

We're told over and over that the new start menu is better in every conceivable way, but the truth is, for a keyboard oriented power user like me, it truly sucks. At least, the default setup, and all the customizations I've attempted, truly suck swamp water.

In XP, I configured all my programs to be accessible in 3 keypresses. Eg. by putting Notepad under Start > Tools > Notepad, I could bring it up in a split second by pressing Windows Key, T, N - likewise for the ~20 other programs I have. I've had this for 8 years and it's ingrained in my style, but more importantly, it is genuinely highly efficient.

I've tried my darndest in W7 to recreate this. However several things are in the way:

1) After the windows key, the Search box has the focus. So no matter what you type in, it isn't shortcutting through the programs menu, it's typing in a search query.

2) I can't seem to create my own top level menus under the start menu (like "tools", "office" etc).

3) The All Programs link doesn't open up a menu with sub menus etc - just lists them in a single list. Maybe typical users prefer this (fair enough) but it's brain damagingly irritating for a power user, as you lose all sense of hierarchy and location.

Can anyone suggest how I could recreate my old XP behavior in W7?

In WinXP I could do it with my eyes shut in "C:\Docs and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs"
When I attempt to do the same in Win7 64bit "C:\Users\All Users\Start Menu" is a link -- "access denied"

Image is my old XP structure
I am using Classic Shell Start (Sourceforge) -- just to annoy the younger players

Will appreciate any help,

A:Add custom menu to Start > Programs menu

If I read you correctly you can navigate to:

C:\Users\"Computer name"\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

Create a new folder in the folder named Programs and it will appear in Start> All programs

See ive created a folder called "Boo" and my "computer name" is scotty:

AppData maybe hidden, if so go to control panel, icons view and locate Folder Options. Once opened
click the view tab and click Show hidden files, folders, or drives.

Hope this helps?

I've got a weird annoyance.
My W7 install has started acting up (during the past few days).

When I attempt to bring up the Desktop Context menu (on the desktop, or in the folder) it takes between 30s - 60s to respond.
All other folders (that I've checked) seem to react instantly (as expected).

I ran sfc /scannow.
It reported no problems.

Windows Explorer has been a bit twitchy as well (USB HDD disconnection problems).

Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions regarding this problem(s)?

A:Desktop Context Menu Problem

I don't normally recommend this, but you may want to pull up a registry scanner and make sure there are no dead links or bad shortcuts involved.
That would explain the delay in opening as the system tries to verify a bad link.
You could also try looking at the folder with hidden files on to see if anything strange is there.

Hello everyone!!
Recently I installed windows for the 21st time...(Yes it is 21)
It's all working out but i found a glitch.
When i changed the location of my pictures and music to an other location, all of them where working 100%.
But then i had to change the letter of the drive they were on.
Now when i click on them they don't do anything and if i right-click on it and go to properties it kind of freezes..
A properties window appears but it's almost all white.
Any suggestions on how i can reset this??
System restore doesn't work, nor changing the letter at the drive.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Dassen_Alex,

You can use Option Two in this tutorial to type in the new correct full path with the new drive letter for these folders in the registry instead of the default ones from the tutorial.

You are to adjust this using your monitor's menu button . If you dont have an idea how to do it , you can have some guidelines in your monitor's manual .

Hello stratfellow3 and welcome to BC.Dont know if this will help or not but try running System File Checker if you can get Run to open. In the run box type sfc /scannow. You may need the XP CD to do this.

Alright, I am pritty sure this is the best place to put this fourm topic.

So, First I wanta start off by mentioning that my computer is clean of virus' and spyware. I had a browser redirecting virus but that was fixed up.

Ok here is the problem....

About 3 days ago I was going through my computer looking to clear some space and delete some programs that I don't use anymore when I noticed that in the start menu, under All Programs there was another folder in there called "Programs". I opened it and relised that everything in the all programs menu was inside this folder. In otherwords, the folder "Programs" was like a shortcut to the "All programs" folder. So, I deleted it..... Nothing happened. So, I deleted it again..... Nothing happened. Eventually I shut down the computer and restarted it but when it turned on, Nothing but 5 files were in the "All programs" folder. Also everything in the menu before the "All programs" folder had changed (different shortcuts to other programs).

I can't add folders in the start menu and I have lost the shortcuts to the system tools aswell. I would like to know how to fix it.

I will zip 2 screenshots of what the start menu looks like.

When I install AVG antivirus my expanding folders in the start menu no longer work properly.

You can create expanding folders in the start menu my dragging folders from windows explorer to the start menu. Once created, one of the properties of expanding folders in the start menu is that when you double click on them, or right click and then "open" or "explore", then the folder opens in windows explorer. This works fine until I install Grisoft AVG antivirus (latest free edition), then it doesn't work anymore (nothing happens - no error, just nothing). Uninstall AVG and it starts working again.

I am using Windows XP Home with all updates. Previously, I used Windows ME and had no problem using AVG and expanding folders in the start menu. Can anybody tell me if they are having the same problem with AVG and expanding start menu folders with Windows XP, or if they are able to use AVG with Win XP and don't have this problem? Does anybody have any suggestions to correct this problem? If not, are there any other good, free antivirus programs (anybody know anything about "escorcher")?

This is aggravating but not debilitating. When I click on the Windows logo for the Start menu, the left pane is not populated as it once was. The "search programs and files" box is intact and the "All Programs" logo is there, but there are no programs listed. They will all appear however, when I click the "All Programs" logo. I have honestly looked for an answer, but nothing that seems to mimic my particular problem. Any help will be most appreciated.

Everything in my Start Menu works fine except.......

1. When I click 'All Programs' nothing happens.
2. When I click 'Help and Support', 'Search' or 'Run' it puts a shortcut on my desktop and nothing else happens.

I'm not sure when this started but I think it may have been just after I did a Clean Windows using PopUp Stopper Professional.

My sons PC has an odd problem. He was experiencing some glitches & ran Microsoft antispy. This found some spyware & removed it but the PC would no longer re-start. We have got Windows back by upgrading to XP Pro SP2 from a bootable CD.
The problem we are left with is that, although we can see all of his installed programmes & start them by double clicking the exe file, none of the programmes appear in the start menu. If we try to add them to the start menu through 'start menu properties' & 'add items', we can browse to the exe file & select it but it is not added to the start menu.

Dell Inspiron 8300 Win xp pro sp3.

I deleted something in my startup menu and now when I startup and the personal setting comes up, all I get is a blank screen.

Same thing when I try safe mode.

Any ideas out there?

A:Start menu problem

When you say 'blank screen', do you mean you only see your background picture and thats it? No icons and no taskbar?

If so, just press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to open up Task Manager, then go File > New, then type in explorer.exe. This should show your icons and taskbar again.

I have been using Windows 7 for the past 5 months and im having an annoying problem with the Start Menu...

I like to keep me computer like it's brand new and not change any settings ect (it's just an OCD thing i have) and i want the Start Menu to remain like it was from day one. I have noticed with Windows 7 (unlike XP and Vista) when i use an application for the first time, it appears at the bottom like in XP and Vista, but what i find annoying in Windows 7 is when i use the same programme over time it starts to move up the Start Menu list to a point where it is eventually at the top.

I have been searching for weeks/months how to disable it and found nothing. The only thing i can do is right click and "Remove from this list" but the next time i use it, it will be at the top of the list... The only other way i can fix it is to Restore the computer to factory settings which i've been doing every 2 weeks.

Is there anything i can do to disable/fix the problem or do i have to just put up with it ???

A:Start Menu Problem...

Hi LEW, welcome to the forums

If you right-click the taskbar and select properties the first screen you're faced with will have 2 options;

1 'Store and display recently opened programs in start menu'
2 'Store and display recently items in the start menu and taskbar'

Option 1 is the 1 you're after. This should stop Windows from linking recently used apps to the Start Menu.

Hope it helps
