computer stops working, and screen goes black. Any suggestions?

Q: computer stops working, and screen goes black. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any help! I'll try to explain as best I can. I have a custom built pc, running Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit, 8 GB RAM, Intel LGA 775 motherboard, Intel Xeon 2.4 Quad processor, 550 watt power supply and nvidia GeForce 9800 GT graphics card. I do audio recording, and use an external audio interface (novation x-station 49). My computer has ran flawlessly for the past year or so, now my 2 (22" Samsung) monitors go black after a few minutes. It started out once or twice a day, now it only takes about 5 minutes.

My first thought was the video card (because both monitors go black) which I'm still in the 5 year warrantee period, so I can get it replaced. Everything is normal, then I get a second of messed up screens, then it goes black. When the screens are messed up, they look like the one referring to bad video card ram in this link... Diagnose video card problems by comparing with example corrupted screens

When it goes black, I have no audio either. ?

I cleaned the dust out, ran with cover off, all fans are still running, and computer appears as its operating as normal, except the screens go black and audio stops. I guess my question is, if my video cards ram is bad, and it crashes/overheats and stops working, would it cause the audio to stop also? Or could it be something else, like the mobo, or cpu?

I also don't get a error message, and don't see it in error logs, but have to do a hard re-start to get it back on and working for a few minutes at least. :'-(

A: computer stops working, and screen goes black. Any suggestions?

Hello aaronuws. Welcome to the Forum.

My first thought, as was yours, was overheating. If the 9800 is inside a hard plastic case be sure to blow or vacuum that out carefully.

I think the best way to start would be to simplify. Disconnect all but the minimum needed components of the system and run it for a while just to test to see if the problem remains. That will give a clue about which direction to investigate first.

The usual questions:
Have you made any hardware changes recently? OS changes?
Have installed any new programs (particularly games) recently?
Is the symptom regular and constant (happens every time) or random and occasional?
If a regular occurrence: does it happen after a certain period of time, or is the amount of time random?

Let us know.

I'm trying to figure out if my computer is getting ready to crash or whether I have malware, a virus, etc.

It is lagging behind right now as I type this. If I am running a program, it takes forever to download, and then runs herky jerky. I tried to listen to some music on itunes, and the music kept hanging up and repeating, like a broken record.

Is my computer on it's last legs, or do I have an infection.

I just suspended ALL add-ons on Frefox, and at least it is typing better now....

Can you tech guys help?

THANK you so much!

I installed update for windows 10. When attempting to return to an active screen from screen saver the screen does not return to an active screen but goes to a dark screen. The cursor moves, but will not return to an active screen. Pushing the power button resets and runs the startup and returns to the computer to an active screen

A:What suggestions for a black screen after screen saver?

Hi Welcome to Windows Central! IMHO screen savors are no longer necessary. I would turn it off. Here's link from HTG. If you need more help, please join the forum. Why Screen Savers Are No Longer Necessary Join the Windows Central Community!

I have read and tried many suggestions on this forum in the last week without success.
The following are the details of my issue and what I have tried to correct it:
Black Screen with Cursor only
Desktop is a Medion Akoya with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.
Ran Repair but told nothing to repair.
Tried restore point, still got black screen with cursor.
Tried Safe Mode, black screen with cursor.
Tried virus checking disk, found problems but still went to black screen after rebooting.
Cannot create a boot usb drive as I have an OEM desktop so no CD/DVD and unable to download iso file as Product Key does not work (OEM). Got another Win7 disc but did not work.
All files are present on the disk.
I want to retain data on my disk without doing a clean install.
Any help would be appreciated.

hey, put this machine together just over a year ago, upgrading bits and bobs every few months // yesterday afternoon I got my second bluescreen (the first was a result of 6updater being poop) / something about a repage error // I tried to reboot the SSD wasn't detected / windows tried to boot from the old install on the Blue (which was the first drive in this PC) // removed the Blue / booted successfully from the SSD / assumed fault was with the Blue // two hours later PC crashed / again, the SSD wasn't detected / Hard Reset (PSU off, 20 seconds holding power button) and the SSD install booted fine / /started to run tests (in between crashes) Prime 95 - half hour - no crash - temps below 50C / Heaven 3.0 - fifteen minutes - temp below 55C - no crash / PC mark vantage - one run - no crash / HD Tune - all benches (that don't require a blank drive) and the health check - no errors - SSD speeds in excess of anand's benches of the M4 / installed Ubuntu on the Black, removed the SSD ran stable for two odd hours, longer than windows has on the SSD / swapped cables between the drives no change - windows crashes // so it looks like the problem is the SSD, not the mobo, but I don't know what's causing // I see two options: - reformat the SSD and reinstall windows and hope - RMA the SSD, in the mean time run windows from the HDDs EDIT where did my line breaks go?

A:SSD randomly stops working... but there aren't any black flags...

Since this is an SSD a firmware update may help you:
Sometimes an SSD just needs a firmware update to restore it, my OCZ loved the destructive firmware updates, solved their random disappearing act and improved performance.

FYI, to start a new line simply press Enter, do not use slashes. Also the text automatically wraps to a new line once you reach the end of the line you are on so no need to manually add them unless you want too.

So last night I turned my comp off (safely) and went to bed. I turned it on and found that it said something about user profile failing. So I went into safe mode and did a system restore- but had to reboot the hard drive, I think it said? so I waited about and hour for the comp to validate all the files. Then I turn it on and same problem. After restarting several times, it just goes to a black screen with a flashing underscore.

Before you wagging your finger at me- please note my dad does not like spending money on this PC. He didn't buy anything but the comp itself. No extra hardware or software.

In any case, please help ASAP.

My daughters computer is a Windows XP (as is mine) - she first could not go anywhere or click anything without an error window popping up. Each error window was different. She couldn't even get into the screen to choose system restore, recovery would go to the same day or day before only. She finally got into safe mode and started a system restore which froze at 37% at a file that she is sure is the problem. Then it went to black screen. We are sure it's a virus (at least I am) but we can't get into her programs to run anything. Can you help me??? I am computer stupid, so give me kindergarten instructions, please. How can I make the restart function work again? I've already tried removing and replacing the battery, doing a system restore, and i've checked there's enough disk space/memory.

okay so for the past 2-3 days my computer has been crashing, and it's almost the same thing every time: the screen glitches with pink, white, and green tiles and lines, the cursor disappears, the screen goes black, and the hard drive stops spinning. All the lights on the front of the computer stay on, the fans stay on, and the monitor doesn't say anything about not receiving a signal. The first time it happened I tried turning it on right away and it booted up and let me sign in, but as it was loading the desktop and icons it glitched again, and froze. after I shut down and let it sit for a while it worked just fine until the next day when it did the same thing again, but twice in one day and with a shorter time between freezes. Today I had a WerFault.exe error pop up and when I clicked ok on it the bottom half of my screen turned pinkish and the computer froze when I restarted the pink tone was still there but it did not show up on any windows that I opened and when the background changed it went away.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

P.S. half of the time it has happened I have been playing StarCraft2 if that makes any difference.

P.P.S. I am running Windows 7 64-bit.

Hi again,

I have another very nasty issue...
My system fails to enter Standby or Hibernation. When I start the process, the monitor fades out to black - as normal - and the system begins to disable devices. I can see i.e. that an attached USB-Stick gets turned off. Unluckily, Windows seems to get stuck in between - my WLAN-Card seems to stay on (indicated by its LED), and the system just gets stuck there. (Interestingly, although the WLAN-Card stays on, the computer seems to disconnect correctly - I can't RDP in in this state.) I have to hold the power switch for 4 seconds to stop that situation.

The behavior started a few days ago, while I was messing around with my drivers because of another (unrelated) issue. Unluckily, System Restore doesn't want to go back, so I'll have to find another solution.
My biggest problem: I just can't find a way to analyze what device is causing the problem - the Event Log shows nothing of interest, and I can't think of other important logs.

Does anyone have an idea what may cause this or how to debug that issue?

Thank you for your help!
Felix Freiberger

Holding the power button does not turn it off? Does it work normally and only breaks when this happens? If so, you have a bad motherboard or power supply. Unfortunately there's no diagnostic tests to confirm which one it is. If you are willing to take the risk, check your OEM vendor's website for any possible BIOS update.

Hello, wondering if anyone can offer any advice please
Having a strange problem with my laptop screen. It's a Tiny 8399 laptop.
When I start the laptop up, it works fine, but after being on for a while, suddenly the screen goes very funny, with lots of lines - it gets worse and worse until it's totally unusable. Moving the screen changes the picture slightly but doesn't help. Then when I turn back on again it's OK again.
What is really strange is that last time I turned on my laptop I connected an external screen. At first both screens worked fine, then after about 15 minutes the laptop screen went funny as described, but the external screen went blank! So seems like it may not be the screen, but perhaps the grahpics card...? Or something else I don't know. But it's weird that when I move the laptop screen when this is all happening the picture does change slightly.
Any advice would be appreciated.

A:Laptop screen stops working after 20 min of use, and so does external screen

Sounds like a faulty card or cable, if your able strip the laptop down and find the cable that links the screen to the motherboard, it may be loose, if the graphics card is a plug in type then try reseating it.

Other than that your gonna need a visit to a pc shop....

Good Evening,

I need help please. My home PC was attacked by the vundo virus over the weekend. With the help of someone at, it was deemed cleaned.

McAfee ran this morning on schedule. When I left it was at 90% with nothing detected. I returned after 3 hours, opened webmail to dump unwanted mail and clear spam folder. I exited webmail and attempted to open MS Outlook. McAfee asked if I wanted to allow a change to registry for Outlook and I responded to block change. I At the same time, I got error message that I did not have permission to open the application. That didn't seem right so I decided to run Malawarebytes(trying to run it at least once a day). McAfee asked if I wanted to allow Malawarebytes to run and I allowed it. While running Malawarebytes, McAfee displahyed that it had discovered and quarantined Artemis "something". Malawarebytes finished runnning but reported no detections.

I attempted to open Outlook again and received the same error message. I then restarted the computer using Start/Shutdown/Restart. Just as the system shutdown, I heard the Windows error sound again. When the system restarted, there was a black screen and the cursor. I then attempted to start in Safe Mode and now have safe mode with the black screen. I have tried Safe Mode in Command Line, Safe Mode with Last Known Good Configuration. None of these worked. I think this was virus related and now I can't get windows to boot at all.

Instead of whatever it was displaying before, it shows a randomly changing pattern of multicolor squares, then the whole computer shuts down. When I turn it on again, everything is back to normal. Hello Tristar and welcome to Seven Forums.

Depending on how long you've been experiencing this problem, you might be able to use a restore point to return your computer to a date/time prior to when the problem first began.

System Restore

If you have difficulties logging in you might have better success by accessing Safe Mode through Advanced Boot Options.

Safe Mode

Malware could also cause the problems you're experiencing. If you haven't already done so, do a full scan with your installed anti-malware suite. Since no anti-malware program is 100% effective 100% of the time (if there was such a thing we'd all be using it), I also recommend running full scans with these free products:

ESET Online Scanner

Windows Defender Offline (This requires you to make a bootable CD/DVD/Flash drive because it will bypass the usual startup procedure. Best to create the bootable media on a machine that is known to be malware free.)

It's also possible that you might have damaged or corrupt system files. Try running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found, run th escan 3 times and reboot your computer after each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Please post back if anything helped or not.

I've experienced a problem with windows 8.1 ever since building this pc. Basically, when using my pc, at random times the start menu stops working. I.e, when I click the start button, the menu does not come up, right click does not also work to bring up the power menu. The sidebar does not also appear. I've done a few reformats for various reasons and it's not appeared to have fixed the issue.

Pressing win+x does bring the power menu up, but the start button is still unresponsive after.

The one thing that does fix the issue is restarting explorer.exe from task manager

I'm not sure what causes this issue and was just wondering whether anyone else has experienced this, and if so, any fixes? Is it a glitch in 8.1?

Good night,

Sorry to bother everyone tonight! For the past 2 days, my household has been having issues with the wireless connection. To be more specific, we get limited connection with the following errors:

"Wi-Fi" doesn't have a valid IP configuration.
And some other error in reference to the default gateway.

In the beginning, I had no idea what was happening. We just assumed we were having internet issues, and of course, I called my ISP. They replaced the modem, changed all our cables, did testing to see what the problem could be and of course, it never replicated itself, so they couldn't find the problem.

Tonight, my mother brought her laptop home for the 2nd night in a row, and tried connecting. We encountered issues again. No one could connect to the wi-fi, and only those running LAN wires could get internet. It took us a while to realize this only happened when my mom's laptop tried to connect, but it was finally narrowed down to this particular scenario.

Laptop brand: Dell

This is totally weird. My computer is working fine today until I decided to add 2 more gig of ram into it. After that, it won't even boot up, there is no beeping sound, and there is no signal to the computer monitor at all. The screen is totally dark, displaying "no signal". After I remove the extra RAM, and switch back to the original working configuration, the computer still won't start up at all. I checked all the cable, video card cables, unplug and re-plug in everything. Still, it doesn't help at all. The power supply is working, since all the fans are still working. I stripped the computer down to the bare essential, one strip of ram, one HD, video card.. still, the computer won't boot... does that mean my motherboard is fried?
I tried to clear CMOS, but it seems to make it worse, now the computer will start for 2 seconds before restart itself again.. and keep repeating doing that until I shut it off.
For some weird reason, my computer case don't have a built-in speaker (case: Raidmax Sagitta), there is no cable that I can attach to the speaker pin on the motherboard. But I notice something, after I remove everything (including cpu), I was able to power up the computer without it restarting every 2 seconds. But the screen is still totally dark (after I put the video card in to check).. but once I put CPU back into the motherboard (without the video card) the computer will keep restart itself again..what can i do now?

A:My computer stops working. Urgent Help!!

When you clear the CMOS, there should also be a pin with 3 male connectors and a 2 pin female connector. Place the female connecter on the other 2 pins after you have taken the battery out. This should resolve the problem, also you may have overheated coincidentally.

My 902C goes dead and remains lifeless/unable to start. The computer is running Windows 10 updated from Windows 8.2. The history: About five weeks ago, I notice the date and time were off about 32 hours. I reset the date and time manually. The computer went dead about 20 seconds later and wouldn't restart. I replaced the BIOS battery. The computer started, ran for 2 minutes 30 seconds, then went dead. I replace the BIOS battery with new batteries three times. The same thing happened each time. I removed the battery entirely and started the computer, which ran for about 2 minutes, then went dead. I unpluuged it, disconnected all the periperhals, opened the case, and re-seated the RAM chips. The computer remained dead. I let it sit for five days. After the five days of storage, the computer started (still without a BIOS battery), ran for about 3 minutes, then went dead. I installed another new BIOS battery, disconnected the power transformer, and let the computer sit for another 5 days. The computer then started, ran for about 3 minutes, then went dead. I disconnected the power transformer, and let the computer sit for another 5 days. The computer then started, but the display was scrambled, jittery, and illegible, and the keyboard and mouse were nonfunctional. I disconnected the power transformer, and let the computer sit for 3 days. The computer then started, and the display was OK again. The computer ran for about 8 minutes--long ... Read more

A guy I know got three (3) Gateway's E6300 (Pent. 4 @3.6, 2x512 [email protected], 80GB SATA) from surplus; and they were is remarkably good and clean condition (not a single spec of dust inside). I was asked to set-up one with Win7. Install went OK, I have put on chrome, office, AVG and called it a day. Before I left office I ran full AVG scan. Next day I came into office (no one touched the PC) and while the PC was fully on, there was no video signal and no power going to USB devices, but HDD and all the fans were spinning. So I restarted the PC and while it did power up, there was still no video signal and no power going to USB devices, but HDD and all the fans were spinning. No post codes or beeps. So, I set that PC on side and set up the second one the same way. Before I left office I ran full AVG scan.

I took the PC home (the first one), tested the PSU and HDD, both OK. Now when I booted, unlike in office, I got three long beeps (memory fault), so I took out both sticks and re-seated them. The PC booted normally. I ran boot diagnostics from CD which tests everything from HDD, to video card and memory and it came all OK. Ran MemTest86 from few hours and it too came up OK. Now I am staring at PC screen and the PC is still functioning. I even ran AVG several times to see if that would crash it, but nothing.

Here is the kicker. I just got a call from the guy, that the second computer I set-up is not working. Again it was sitting turned on over night and it "crashed"... Read more

So i've had a virus or maybe two before this happened, like at the time of occurence, i had some virus that would constantly take over my internet, but i wasn't worried cause it was IE and i used firefox, but then it started hijacking firefox, and at the same and even before this had occured i had the red circle with the white x on the botton in the tray that installs Windows antivirusXP 2009. The program i've used is malwares and that took out stuff but never was able to take out the red circle. Malware didn't work but was the best for getting rid of the baggage that also came along.

A:Computer stops working at start up

Hello and welcome..I am not too familiar with Pandora or whether ViewpointSource is related to it. Perhaps when you have the fukll or correct error, but later for that. The second error should eaily be fixed with Autoruns. Its not unusual to receive such an error after using specialized fix tools.A "Cannot find...", "Could not run...", "Error loading... or "specific module could not be found" message is usually related to malware that was set to run at startup but has been deleted. Windows is trying to load this file but cannot locate it since the file was mostly likely removed during an anti-virus or anti-malware scan. However, an associated orphaned registry entry remains and is telling Windows to load the file when you boot up. Since the file no longer exists, Windows will display an error message. You need to remove this registry entry so Windows stops searching for the file when it loads. To resolve this, download Autoruns, search for the related entry and then delete it.Create a new folder on your hard drive called AutoRuns (C:\AutoRuns) and extract (unzip) the file there. (click HEREif you're not sure how to do this.)Open the folder and double-click on autoruns.exe to launch it.Please be patient as it scans and populates the entries. When done scanning, it will say Ready at the bottom.Scroll through the list and look for a startup entry related to the file(s) in the error message.Right-click on the entry and choose delete.Reboot ... 'Ello, my first post here.
I use a Toshiba Protege M700 Tablet PC running Windows XP Service Pack 3.
It has a digital volume control, which is probably not the correct technical term, but it means that when you move the volume wheel, a slider pops up in the middle of the screen to display the volume level (similar look and location to the thingumer that appears when you hit [Fn]+[Esc]). I personally believe it was a really bad decision, but that's not the point.

It is controlled by some program that I know nothing about, and when it breaks for whatever reason, it means that I can't change the volume on my computer. Sometimes, however, my audio simply stops working, and both the audio controller and the speaker symbol on the task bar disappear. [This is a different matter from the times when the audio controller breaks while my speakers are muted.]

This time is not like any of those times, believe it or not--this time, I can still use the digital audio controller, and as such I know that my volume is up and is not muted. Despite this, the speaker in the taskbar has disappeared, and I can't hear sounds from my computer.

I don't think it's a problem with a driver, because whenever I have problems like this it gets fixed when I restart, and while I'm not exactly a qualified professional in this regard as I understand it driver problems are usually fixed by reinstalling said driver. Perhaps there is some process that I killed which controls the audio, but I... Read more

A:Computer audio stops working

Try checking the audio devices in control panel see if you have the correct configuration in there. You can also restore the speaker icon in your task bar in audio devices.

If audio devices is grayed out then it means your audio card is disabled or not properly installed. (check device manager)

If you can see the audio settings in audio devices and you can see the name of the audio card you're using and still not making any sounds, you might wanna try checking the speakers if they're connected to the right audio port of your laptop, or might wanna consider using different speakers.

Last option is to check the manufacturer of the audio card and download the latest driver on their website.

I was getting help over on this thread ( ) and the person helping me suggested I make a thread here since he ran out of ideas to help me. A lot of useful stuff is in that thread.
Anyways, he thinks it maybe a overheating problem since the inside of my computer was really dusty though I cleaned it out and it st has the same problem though I wasn't able to be super thorough as I didn't accidentally break anything.
I think the problem has to do with my power... My comp is like... It's Getting over powered since power cycling let's my computer have about an extra minute before the problem happens again and it sounds like my computer is working really hard. Though I'm not a computer guy so it's just a guess. Not sure if it's possible.
Though could be something else too. I've been at this for days now and I really want my computer working again.

Hey, would love to get some help or advice for this problem! My laptop was infected with antimalware doctor a few days ago. I though id gotten rid of it, but my computer is still acting a little strange. It boots up normally, but after a few mins- hours of using the internet, the page I'm on becomes unresponsive. When I try opening a new page or try to open IE instead of firefox, it says i'm offline. Then everything proceeds to freeze up until im forced to shut down. A:Computer stops working every couple weeks

Scheez, could be a zillion things. Standard way of attacking a computer problem is separate the potential causes into Hardware, Software, or Operations.

You don't say when these crashes occur? When the computer is being used or left unattended or whatever. Is there some sort of common thread to all crashes. Same program being used?

I would start with opening the puppy up and giving it a good inspection and cleaning. Maybe to include pulling the power supply and opening its cover and seeing what shape it is internally. Vacuum everything out super clean.

Pay attention to all fans, ensure all are free rotating and operate normally. Check if anything seems to be overheating. Check all cards are well seated, maybe remove, vacuum, reseat. Including the RAM is installed proper. Check all connectors. The part about on a crash and can't reboot points toward hardware. Maybe a power supply.

Then on to software, run virus scans, look at hijack log, etc.

I would ensure everything is whistle clean, including inside the power supply and then go from there. Would try to better define what a typical crash looks like, what was happening before and what happens on an attempted reboot?

The part about "I have fixed it 3 times now " is confusing. What is getting fixed and then failing again? What is being "Redone to get it working again"?

Hi there.

In the past few weeks, I've been noticing my computer running slower and slower. I thought this was because of a large amount of HD space used up, but it's not. There isn't a whole lot of applications running, if not any. No background processes that seem fishy.

Then this morning, the internet has stopped responding. It shows up as being connected, but when you use Firefox or Chrome, it only works for a few seconds and then a server error appears.

All the other computers in the house work, and so does all the devices, but not this one.

I've run a MBAM scan, a full and a quick scan, I've only found 3 infections but they've been removed, and it still isn't working.

I'm not sure if it's a virus that appears to cause the problem, or if it's the internet. I doubt it's the internet, because it was working just fine last night, albeit very slow loading times on websites.
My computer is a Windows XP Media Center edition, Service Pack 2, and uh, yes.

If there's anything else you would like me to add or give, just ask. This is getting annoying, you would understand.
Thank you.
EDIT: Ah yes, if I reset the router or reconnect, the internet on teh computer will still only work for a few seconds. So if I need to download anything, I would have to download it on this laptop and send it over to a flash drive, to be sent to the computer, correct?

The sound on my computer (Dell Optiplex) keeps going out. If I restart the computer, it will come back on, but I don't know how to stop it from happening to begin with or why it keeps cutting out.  It's quite annoying.
When I click on the sound icon in the right hand corner, I get this message: "There are no active mixer devices available."  I have tried all the suggested fixes for this, but the only thing that works is to restart the computer.
I have gone to the control panel to add new hardware.  That doesn't work as everything shows up as working just fine.  Can't add anything.
I have checked the device manager -- nothing has a yellow exclamation point.
I have tried to update the driver -- I get the message that I have the latest driver installed.
I have tried to stop and then restart the service in services.msc.  No change.  Sound still won't work.
According to belarc advisor, this is what I have on my computer:ADS DVD Xpress B
SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio
USB Audio Device
This could be worse - I could totally and always without sound, but it's really quite annoying to have multiple programs open (I work from home on the computer) and have to close everything down in order to restart to get the sound back. It's such an unproductive waste of time and suggests that there is something wrong.
Anyone have any other ideas I haven't tired yet?

A:Sound stops working - must restart computer

I need a few more details. What sound device are you using? Headphones? Speakers that connect through 3.5mm jack? What is the USB audio device as listed by belarc? When does the sound stop working? Does it stop working while streaming a video? What are you doing when the sound stops working?
As a good first step, first uninstall the sound drivers and software from Control Panel\add and remove programs\uninstall and then reinstall by downloading the newest version directly from dell's website: You can find the service tag generally on the top, side, or back of the desktop.
Because this is an older computer (I assume since it is running windows xp), I suggest you open the case, dust the computer out and while you have it open, inspect the motherboard for blown or bulging capacitors:

So I think some viruses or malware have progressively gotten worse on my computer. When my Mozilla did work, the Google search results were being hijacked maybe 1 in every three times and my computer constantly popped up with 'explorer has stopped working and needs to close' . I restarted my computer last night for the first time in a few weeks and now my Mozilla doesn't even load up and my computer crashes after about 15 minutes of browsing [I am using Chrome for this right now].The GMER scanner resulted in a blue screen both in regular windows and in safe mode, so unfortunately I don't think I can post a log of that scan just quite yet. I am running vista on a thinkpad by the way and use AVG free [updated].
I ran a malwarebytes anti-malware scan for a couple of hours tonight and it found ~10 attacks and deleted them except for "DesktopLayer.exe" which I tried to delete in safemode, but it returned back to the Microsoft Folder in Program Files (where it was originally) after I rebooted my computer.

Please help me, as school has just started and I will be needing a stable computer to browse/write papers.

Hey everyone. I have an old Compaq Presario 5000 that freezes up after a while. And by freezing up I mean that sometimes while surfing the net or running Media Player everything stops responding mouse keyboard internet connection - everything. I have to actually press the power button and restart the system that way. Twice (out of the 100's of times the computer has done this) I recieved "System Has Recovered From A Serious Error" message and after the report is done and sent the help site that comes up from windows says, "Problem Caused By Device Driver" but then states that MS can't give me any help with the problem! There seems to be something wrong here (obviously) and I've checked the Device Manager for the yellow exclamation and have none. The system goes like this:
Compag Presario 5000
AMD Athlon 901Mhz
1GB PC133Mhz RAM
Windows XP Home
350W PSU
nVidia GeForce 2 MX 400 64MB
can anyone help out?

p.s. also yesterday while trying to search on yahoo, my cursor would move from one spot to another on the search box and then type in random parts of searches I had done earlier that day. Any idea as to what's going on here to?

Hi I have to type fast, so:

Computer bogs down and stops working after start up in about 30min to hour.
Clock stops.
I also cannot get into McAfee website to download antivirus.
I got Norton and loaded it and ran scan with no issues found.
I get redirected to webpages I don't click on when I do searched with google. Happens with IE or Foxfire browsers.
Also, bottom right of task bar has changed and no longer shows connection icon to wireless router.

It really isnt consistent. some games only slow down the internet, others completely stop it from working. It only seems to affect my computer as i've tried using other computers on the same internet while i had a game running on my computer and they worked fine. I first got this issue a few months ago when my ISP was centurylink, it lasted for about a month and then just sort of slowly went away. I recently changed ISP's to a local one, but with similar speeds. As soon as I tried running a game while i had the new ISP my internet slowed down a lot.

I've tried posting on a whole bunch of other forums and either got no answers or really stupid ones like "get better internet"

A:The internet stops working on my computer when I run games

Just a bit more details.
CPU: Intel I5-2320
Ram: 8GB
GPU: r9 280
Operating system: Windows 10

Download speed: at best ~10Mbps usually 7-8
Upload speed: usually ~0.8Mbps

I have a whole lot of games so I don't want to go through and check them all, but here are some of the ones i know i have issues with
Call of duty (most of them)
space engineers
rocket league
Civilization 5
Portal 2

these are all the games i've ran while i had this issue and all of them slowed my internet to varying degrees (usually a lot), If you wanted i could go through the rest of my games to see if they all give me this issue.

I got my computer cleared of all malware on the malware removal board so I now know that isn't the problem. What is happening is that my internet will stop working. It will give me the error page as if I'm not connected to the internet. Once I restart my computer it works fine again for a while. I have windows XP and I have Verizon FIOS internet. I have a wireless router as my modem but it is directly connected to my computer so I know it's not a signal issue. This is usually how it happens. It will be working fine. I will walk away from it for 10 minutes or so and then when I come back it won't work until I restart the computer. It's almost as if it quits working when its idle for a while. usually the yahoo messenger will still work even though the internet pages won't come up. Eventually the yahoo will disconnect as well but it just takes longer. The only other thing I can add is I've been told on more than one occasion that my internet is extremely slow for it being fiber optics. My computer is a fast computer so I know it's not a slow computer issue. According to the speed test my download speed is 5175 kbps and upload is 1794 kbps. I'm not sure if this could be related or not but thought I'd throw it out there just in case. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks much.

A:Computer stops working- no warning- cannot even shut down

I see nothing truly odd in the Hijackthis log.

Does this freeze happen when you are using the computer or after it has been sitting for a while?

If its been sitting a while, could you have enabled sleep/hibernate/standby mode? Sometimes a faulty power-saving mode by the manufacturer (which is probably updated by them, look up HP BIOS for your system, or post your model here and I'll try to help) could be the issue. If you don't have one of the modes enabled, then it could be some other issues, like overheating (solved sometimes by opening the case and blowing out the insides with compressed air), and other factors.

But lets go one step at a time.

Also, I would on iTunes and same problem.. after 1-2 minutes of audio, it would suddenly stop working.

When I am playing a video from Windows media player, i would get an error message that says "An audio device was disconnected or reconfigured. Verify that the audio device is connected, and then try to play the item again".

I tried restarting my computer and it didn't help, my speakers/audio have been working fine for the past year until a couple days ago :S

Windows 7, after "Starting Windows" stops with a black screen and mouse cursor.

1. I turned on my desktop PC after more than 3 weeks of non use, it was in its package/box. It booted nicely to the desktop but suddenly showed a BSOD and turned off. I turned it on again and it showed a message saying the processor is overheated, so I turned it off, removed the processor to check if there's enough thermal compound. Thermal compound was OK, but the processor was a bit shaky, not well fitted, so I replaced the processor correctly and then powered it on.

2. It detected the change I made and asked what system settings it should load, I chose the default CPU settings, in a haste. I didn't read that message well, unfortunately. It showed the error message that Windows wasn't shutdown properly, I chose to load Windows normally. Chkdsk did a disk check, disk passed and it started "Replacing invalid security ID with default security ID". It then started booting; "Starting Windows" and the next screen was just a blank/black screen with the mouse cursor. It's stopped here for hours. I searched for solutions online and tried almost everything I could think of; Repair with Windows installer, bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /fixboot, marking the disk active, etc. No success! I cannot boot in any mode!

3. In an attempt to copy my files off the disk, I tried Ubuntu and even installed a new Windows 7 on an unallocated partition on the same disk. The disk was not... Read more

So I have had this computer for around 5 months and have had little issue with it. All of the sudden my keyboard stopped working. I tried plugging in an external and that was working fine. So I tried to fix the internal one, but as I was looking up the solution my computer blue screened on me. I restarted and it came up with a menu that asked if I wanted to boot normally or etc etc. When I tried to hit enter the keyboard did not function so I had to restart again. Keyboard and computer was working fine. Then later the same thing happened. Internal Keyboard stopped working and soon after the computer blue screened. Next time it happened I closed out my programs before the crash and hit restart. It got stuck on the restart screen for a long time and I had to restart again. I have checked the harddrive, ram, and even did a fresh install of windows 10. This problem is still occuring and is very annoying. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, but it doesnt seem to work. Anybody have any ideas on what could be the problem?

So, last night I fell asleep with my computer on. It was working perfectly, but I had been tired and lazy and had just gone to sleep. I woke up at around 3 AM and was too lazy to wake it up and turn it off, so I stupidly just held the button down and shut it off that way.

This morning I wake up, turn on the computer and all seems well. Until after about 10 minutes (playing Warcraft while I'm telling this story), the computer completely freezes up. I can't Alt F4, I can't get my process manager to show up, so I'm forced to restart it cold. It then happens again (and not only when I'm online with Warcraft).

How it goes is it goes COMPLETELY frozen after a while, whether during boot up, or while on desktop view. Then, the screen goes black, yet the CPU shows as the computer still on (Green Light is still going).

I ran a System Restore to the 6th of the month, but it did nothing concerning this issue. I'm not sure if that eliminates a Software Issue and keeps Hardware in question or what...

Can anyone give me any input? I'm not code freindly or anything, so if you guys could keep it "lamens" termed and any advice as to where to go?

A:Computer Freezes Up Randomly, Then Monitor Stops Working

Laymans terms....

1st thing to try would be a checkdisk, seeing as it had a bad shutdown.

Boot it up, go into "My Computer", Right click on the "C" drive, select Properties, Tools, Error Checking. Tick BOTH the boxes, and hit OK.
It will prompt to reboot, do so, and it will check the Hard Drive for File Errors, bad sectors etc.

Hopefully that'll do the trick

Hi. So, about 3 days ago, before I left on a small vacation, my computer was working fine as usual. After 3 days, my computer has completely stopped working. When I turned my computer on, I heard a loud fan noise, which was an unfamiliar sound, because my computer is very silent. My monitor was also not working for some reason. I opened the computer up and took a look at the video card. I noticed that the fan on the video card was running at an extremely high speed. So, I pulled it out and noticed that it was very hot. So, I tried using the video plugin on the motherboard for the time being, but it did not work. (This was also the first time I ever tried using the motherboard's video card, so I'm not sure if the motherboard problem or not). I also tried using my brother's monitor, but it did not work. So, I replaced the current video card with an older video card I had in storage. However, this video card also started running extremely fast. It had never made that sound before on my previous computer. What is wrong with my computer? The GPU was a MSI R5770 Hawk Radeon HD 5770 1GB. My motherboard brand is an ASUS M5A88-V EVO AM3+.

Well when i bought my computer it came with 2 1gb ram cards installed and it was working perfectly. That was about a year ago and now the monitor had stopped working. when we take out 1 ram card doesnt matter which one or which slot it is in the monitor works again. We have tested the each individually and in each slot and the ram cards both work perfectly. But when we put both in at the same time it stops working.

The ram cards are PC2 6400 platinum editions

The graphics ard is Nvidia geforce 8800 GT

The motherboard is AMD Athalon 64 X2 dual

Also as a side not the mother board appears to have 4 slots for the ram cards 2 yello and 2 black. The yellow ones are where the ram cards were originally installed and the clips for the black ones are bigger than the yellow one's. When both ram cards are in the black slots the computer works but gets the blue screen of death every now and then and microsoft support said there might be hardware failure causing it. So i am pretty sure they dont belong in the black slots and when in the yellow slots the monitor doesn't work but they used to work in there.

I am having quite a large problem with my TalkTalk connection. Whenever i turn off my computer, internet access stops for the entire network, anyone who is conencted, however, local access is still possible.

I am also having a problem with the wireless in my laptop also. Whereas every computer on my network is able to access the router wirelessly, my computer (the one that seems to chut down internet access) won't do that, i send packets, but none are received.

How can i fix these two problems, thanks in advance.

EDIT: Also, when i look at my router settings on when the internet access is offline the IP, Primary and secondary DNS come up as, while when it is connectedi get proper addresses.

A:Network Connection stops working when computer turned off

has this always been the case ?

can we see an ipconfig /all

ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results in a reply here

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will be highlighted
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy
Now go back to the forum - reply and then right click in the reply box and paste

I will now explain what happens:
Whenever I play a game or I am on skype with friends or I simply stay on the internet my computer will sometimes stop, all programs will stop responding (they wont start again either)and the only option I have left is to restart the pc. If this freeze happens when I am on skype the person who listens to me will hear a very loud static noise. Also if I have any video open when it happens the image will go crazy and random colors will op-up on screen before it closes itself.

Alot of people told me it might be from overheating. I changed my GPU now (the temp of the old one was about 70C now its 30C) but the GPU isnt 'overheating' now. The CPU is constant at 40C.

I will post my specs here:
-CPU: AMD Phenom II X3 710 2.60 GHz
-Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit
-GPU:ATI Radeon R7 260x 2GB

However today, it wont hold a charge at all and my computer shuts down completely whenever the power supply is interrupted for a millisecond. I ask because this is the second time a battery has suddenly stopped working on me and I am wondering if there is a reason for this. I tried to check the battery condition by hitting esc + f2 when my computer starts up, but there is no battery check option. Any explanation or advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks for your time.

Hi. So, recently I was having problems with browsing through folders in My Computer, as well as browsing to attach files in programs such as Skype or different email clients. Whatever program I was in would freeze, and crash. Windows Explorer would do the same. However, I posted a HijackThis log in the proper forum, and did a whole bunch of scans and updates, and my system turned up clean for any viruses or malware. I updated my Vista to the Service Pack 2, and that seemed to fix my attaching files in programs problem, but I still am unable to browse my files by going to Start > My Computer. I was wondering what might have caused this problem, and what I might be able to do to fix it. Here is a link to my previous thread where I was directed to come here: anyone could help, you would be awesome. This has been happening for at least two months, and I don't really recall if I made any major changes that might have caused this, but I doubt it. If I need to clarify anything, just tell me. Thanks!

I have a wireless network set up at home with a Linksys RangePlus router that I have been using, which has been working fine with my old HP computers, Macs, ipads, and ipods.

I just bought a new Samsung laptop, and when I try to connect to it using the Samsung, it shows that I'm connected to the wireless network, but I have limited connectivity, and I can't connect to the internet. When this happens, I also lose my internet connection with my other devices. I get the internet connection back only if I stop trying to connect with my new Samsung.

I tried connecting to the router with an Ethernet cable, and it works fine with no problems.

Anyone have any ideas on what could be wrong?

Over the last few days, my computer has been freezing. Before it freezes I repeatedly get a black screen flashing up and then a message that my graphics driver wasn't working but is has been repaired. It does this about 5 times, before completely freezing (ctrl + alt + del doesn't do anything). I have forced it to shut down and started it up, and it works for about 1 minute. At the time I was using microsoft one note (which I haven't had any problems with before), and google chrome, which I have only recently installed. I tried uninstalling chrome and using IE but it did the same after about only a minute of being switched on.

My laptop is about 4 years old, but I've only had problems over the last few days.
I'm currenly using safe mode, and I'm not having any crashing/freezing.

Another problem with my computer. Yesterday, i installed a new bios for my computers motherboard, (AU31). The bios didnt work after restarted after installation. It showed didnt acknowledge any peripherals, monitor and keyboard. So I tried to reset the cmos, which seemed to work last time. After resetting it seemed to run well for 5 seconds, and then it halted at the icon for FIC screen, and when i press a button now, it restarts itself, just keeping this going in a loop. The computer is an emachine, and their warranty is void once you flash the bios i believe, so its all or nothing on this one Any help would be appreciated.

A:computer stops at boot screen

What model eMachine, i used to work there just quit 3 weeks ago. Did you backup your original BIOS?

Alright, so yesterday my Vista asked me for validation. I contacted HP and they told me that my only option would be to buy a new Vista key. I didn't want to spend money on something that shouldn't be malfunctioning in the first place so I downloaded the Vista Loader 4.2. I'm pretty sure it screwed up my computer because now my computer won't go past the boot screen on startup.

A:Computer stops on boot screen.

if the computer came from hp with vista the key will be on a sticker on the machine

if you have loaded a different windows version then you will have to buy a key for it

When I open the "computer" folder in Vista, it is blank and Windows Explorer stops working.  I don't know how to fix it.  In every other respect my computer is working fine.
Initially, I had trouble transfering files from my computer to my external hard drive.  The progress bar would stop at some point and I would finally have to cancel, with some wait time.  This went on for some time, but I was busy and let it pass.
At first the "Computer" folder was not completely blank.  It had my devices but if I would even so much as left click on them once Windows Explorer would stop working and not come back.  At this time, it also took 40 minutes for my computer to reboot.  (I replaced my user profiles as a result of this because I had an issue in the past, but it did not solve th e problem this time.)  It appeared the computer would not properly shut down, but upon leaving it, it did shut down after about 20 minutes.  After this 20 minute shut down the computer boots and shuts down normally, functions otherwise normally, but the "Computer" folder is completely blank (all white), and when it is accessed windows explorer stops working, but comes back.
I have checked the device manager and my devices are there and supposedly working properly with proper drivers, etc.
I have tried searching the internet to solve my problem and have run "sfc scannow" already.
I have my suspicions that it was my c... Read more

When I first turn on my computer, my monitor displays the initial screen (motherboard name, instructions telling me to press DEL for setup, etc.) and then goes beserk:

I can't use the reset button on my case, so I have to turn my computer off by using the surge protector. When I try to turn my computer on again, it stops posting. I haven't changed any settings or downloaded any programs that could have caused something like this to happen. Is this caused by specific hardware, and is there any way to fix this?

Hello, I would really appreciate any help you could give me.

I have an hp media center pc m470n running XP and it will not start up normally. When it boots up to the Windows Screen it just sits there and spins with nothing.

What I have done so far: This has been a problem for two weeks??

I have tried a system restore with no luck (says the computer could not restore to the date; I have tried three dates) and tried booting to the "Last known good configuration," with no luck.

I have no problems starting it up in Safe Mode. I first stopped the software from starting; meaning I went to run, typed msconfig and unchecked all of the boxes under the startup tab. I then restarted my computer with the same result. I then shut it down again and unplugged all of my hardware, except my mouse and keyboard to make sure I didn't have a hardware problem, then rebooted with the same result. I ran my norton antivirus, adware, and Registry Mechanic in same mode; then restarted with the same result. I have now rechecked all of the boxes in my start up (msconfig) and plugged all of the hardware in again. I again restarted and the same thing happened.

I then got mad and completed a destructive restore, which took my hard drive back to how it came out of the box and got the computer to start up after a few tries normally. I completed all of the software updates from Microsoft and the computer worked fine for two weeks. I got up this morning it the computer was r... Read more

Ok, bear with me here folks, I'm not too computer savvy, but here goes:

So lately my wireless internet connection stops working after anywhere from 10 minutes to two hours, a message pops up telling me it is "impossible to connect to my preferred wireless network", and then it fails to detect any wireless connections at all. The strangest thing is that when I try to "repair" the connection, which used to work, the computer immediately shuts down and restarts itself.

It also seems like when I attempt to download something, like a movie for example, the connection fails right away, while if I'm just surfing the web it usually lasts around an hour before stopping. And when I restart the computer again it works perfectly fine at first, like right now, but eventually does the same thing. I also attempted to uninstall the wireless card and that also made the computer restart immediately.

I put in a new wireless card, thinking maybe the old one had over heated, because I recently cleaned out my computer and the fan was choked with dust. So maybe it is still an overheating problem? Because it does the same thing with my new card. The wireless card is TP-LINK 802.11b/g Wireless Adapter

The router is a TP Link 150 Mbps Wireless Lite N Router. My roommates use the same router and are not having any problems with their internet connections. It also says my signal strength is excellent until it just cuts out altogether.

I did a thorough virus scan in... Read more

It happens aproximately every 20 minutes

Supposedly everything on my computer turns off and my monitor says "no video input detected" turns black then goes into sleep mode(sound eventually also turns off and I wouldn't know of anything else is still working behind the black screen)

But the PC its self is still running with the small red light on and I can't do anything except click off the power button on my back, unplug or at the very least press the restart button. The general on/off button doesn't do anything

Before it started doing this I haven't used my pc for almost a week but as I came back today I opened the box to install in a new RAM card I bought which I put in my last available slot out of 4.

I recently started getting very annoying problem. Firefox or other program stops responding and alt+ctrl+del stops working at the same time so I have to reboot. It happens quite often.

What I did already:
*Maybe virus? Full boot time system scan with Avast anti-virus. Nothing found.
*Oh well reinstall windows again... Yes, I did that too. Still same problem BUT ONLY after small break like two days or so.
And most confusing thing is that full screen programs like games do not seem to stop responding. Still, they BSOD like after few hours, but I do not think it is related. Like heavy load or something.

My system details hopefully in my forum profile, at least filled them recently.

So any other ideas how I can fix that?

A:Program stops responding and alt+ctrl+del stops working

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
Please post this info
Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions

Browsers well you might switch off gpu acceleration might help
What other programs are crashing or freezing it's usually a driver issue or Avast up to it's old tricks
Uninstall properly Avast and switch to Panda.

If you're oc'ing your gpu or anything else restore to default.

I'm going to try and describe the problem. I press the power button for my hp pavilion laptop and it starts as normally until I gets to a blue screen (not the BSOD i've learned about recently though). This blue screen has a logo of Windows XP which fades in after one second. I see my mouse pointer and I am able to move my mouse pointer but that is all. No matter how long I wait that blue screen with the windows xp logo stays there, not allowing me access to my desktop. This sux. Any suggestions or ideas? Know anything about this? My sister was the last one on it and I think that she caught a virus, I hope its something repairable though.

How far does it get in the boot process? Does the BIOS detect your harddrive? Perhaps you accidently unplugged your boot drive?

Hello, I'm new to BleepingComputer and I'm not exactly sure how this works and whatnot, but I'll try my best. I think my computer (Windows Vista SP1) was recently infected by the malware virus "Monopod". Originally, the virus opened ad pages in IExplorer and bogged down my comp and attempted to add itself to my startup folder, which I blacklisted with Search and Destroy, so I put it into Safe Mode and ran Malwarebytes' Malware Removal tool and found a couple infected files on the registry, so I removed them. Secondly, when I log back on normally, windows begin popping up of "Windows hosting process (rundll.exe) has stopped working" and they pop up like wildfire - so many that literally every second I'm closing one. I can't leave my computer unattended in normal mode for about four minutes or else it freezes due to the Windows Hosting Process (rundll.exe) problems. Also, no matter how many times I run Malwarebytes', when in normal mode, Search and Destroy alerts me in the corner that "User-Defined Decision: The process Monopod attempted to add itself to Startup but has been blacklisted" which obviously means that the files are still present on my computer. Thanks for the help that anyone gives me, it means a lot considering that all my summerwork is saved on my harddrive. Here is the HijackThis log that I ran whilst in Safe Mode.

I have a feeling this may be a driver error, but I dont know.
A friend gave me a computer,

Os: Vista x86
OEM I think
Hardware age: 2007
Age of installation: not sure, its my friends. Might not have been reinstalled before

CPU: Athlon 64x2
Video Card: Onboard Graphics
Mobo: Inspiron 532 mobo
PSU: Bestec ATX0300P5WB 300W

System Manufacturer: DELL
Model No.: Inspiron 531

It works perfectly fine, apart from when I connect to the internet through 3 mobile broadband (3 Huawei E122). Once it connects, internet explorer launches. As soon as I begin using IE, the computer freezes, mouse will not move, keyboard will not work, then after 2 mins it blue screens. stop code is 0x77. I have tried to exit IE and use firefox instead, this works much better but it still bluescreens, just less frequently.

My friend brought it to a local shop who told him the usb header on the mobo is the problem and needs a new mobo and qouted him ?250 repair. However I dont think this is the problem as, no other usb device gives any trouble at all. And the mobile brodband dongle only crashes once it connects and the browser is launched.

I ran Norton antivirus, super anti spyware, malwarebytes antimalware, and RU Botted. All I picked up was a few malwares.

I also ran full system diagnostic test, with no problems.

Hello all,

I just moved to a new apartment. I packed the Computer in a padded box and transported it in my car.

I finally set my desktop up and I now have the dreaded black screen. No beeps, all fans, lights, hd lights are running.

I swapped my ram first and still persistent. I reinstalled my video card same thing.

Also, when I push the power on button, I'm not able to restart, or power down. Keyboard lights not on (ps2 port) and no usb port is working.

I'm at a loss now.

Please advise the next steps.

I appreciate your help.

Ok, Firefox seem to broken a look to be. It load the windows just fine but the actual page itself is black or painted black as my mouse do react to thing on the page (pictures, Search bars, text, ect). On the top part of the window were the search bar, Icons, and tabs should be are invisible, again they are there but aren't showing up on my screen. I had a few other problem but they seem to be fix.
So far I have used Avest Antivrus, Malwarebytes, AdwClearner, Rkill, and Junkware Removal, which got rid of the other problems but the main one persisted to occur. I was recommend to do a DDS and post it here for help on the issue.

Laptop is a Lenovo V570 with Window 7 Home Premium.
A friend of mine was using my laptop and installed a photo program called Gimpshop.  He restarted the comp and then right after the Welcome screen it goes black and only shows the mouse pointer.  I could move the pointer but nothing else worked.
I was able to boot into safe mode with networking.  That's how I'm on here posting.  Safe mode seems to work fine.
- I ran a scan with Superantispyware and it found a bunch of stuff.  Deleted it all.  Ran another scan and it found nothing.
- I then ran a scan of Malwarebytes and it found a few things.  Deleted them all.  Ran another scan and it found nothing.
- I then ran a scan with AdwCleaner and it found 2 or 3 things.  Deleted them all.  Ran another scan and it found nothing.
Then for the hell of it I ran another scan of the three and nothing was found.
- Ran scannow from a command prompt.  It found nothing.
- Ran Start Up Repair from Windows Recovery disc.  No problems.  Also, I come to find out that System Restore was turned off.  I thought it had alwys been on, so I have no system restore images to revert to.
