In the Start Menu the only two choices in the power button options are 'Log off' and 'Lock'. I reset the start button options to default and restarted the computer by powering it off but there is no change. I lost the 'Shut Down'. 'Restart' and 'Switch User' options. How do I fix this other than restoring the operating system from backup or system restore?

Shutdown Options - Start Menu

Hello, I hope you are well.

I think that the Power Button in the Start Menu, where users can choose for it to Lock, Sleep, Hibernate, and Shutdown their computers, is very useful. I'd like to somehow tweak it even further, but am not sure if this is even remotely possible.

Is there any way I can change it so that when I press the button, a certain program will start up? Ideally, I'd like to change the action of the Power Button to start up a program called Vista Shutdown Timer (Vista Shutdown Timer), an application which allows me to put on timer on when I'd like the computer to shut down, sleep, etc.

Thanks,
Vic

A:Tweaking the Power Button Icon in Start Menu

Hello Vic,

Sorry, but no you cannot have it use another program instead for that. However, you can manually create a shut down shortcut that has a time delay and pin it to the Start Menu or Taskbar to run it manually instead, or just run the program manually to do so.

A:Cannot change Power Option Button in Start Menu

Hello Zaidbaby,

With it grayed out, it looks like you may have a group policy (option 4 or 5 below) set for this that prevents it from being changed.

You might see if you may be able to change the Power button action using one of the other options in the tutorial below instead.

I have just upgrated from XP to Win 7 Home Premium. I'm missing the option to close my pc down with hybernation to get at much faster close down and restart.
Due to I can not get the "hybernation" menu option into the start menu.

I open "Power Option" click on "Change Advanced power Settings" and click on "Power buttons and lid". Here can I only see "Power button action" and have set it to "hybernate" which works"

I'm missing "Sleep button action" and "Start menu power button".

Can any one help me?

Jesper A

A:Start Menu Power button option is missing

Once you open the Power Options window,on the left click Choose what the power buttons do
Change the sleep button to Hibernate
Im not sure if this means the actual button on the front of your PC or the one on the start menu.

Either way you should now be able to set Hibernate.

Perhaps someone else can get you the options you want.

Hi,

I've disabled the power/sleep button in the start menu a while ago to prevent my children from shutting down the computer. Now they are older and I want to get them to put the computer to sleep when they are not using it. Unfortunately, I can not remember how I disabled the power button. There are no group policies set and I couldn't find any settings on the registry (as suggested in your tutorials Power Button and Shutdown Options - Start Menu). Here is a screenshot of the situation:

Any ideas how I could enable this again?

Whatever I try (both ways as advise here) to make the default at the Start Button (Sleep/Restart/Shutdown etc.) it doesn't stick, stay on Shutdown. Annoying. It's like the old days of Mircrosoft Word when it was new: its settings usually failed to stick, and that went on for nearly a decade.

Any ideas please?

I followed the instructions in this tutorial on how to change the power button action to automatically shut down and the power but only puts the PC in sleep mode. I even restarted the PC and it still won't shut down by pressing the power button. The power plan is High Performance.

Hi all,

In Windows Vista I always set my start menu power button to be "Shut Down". However, every time I restart my computer, the settings do not persist - it becomes "Sleep" again. The only exception to this is when Windows Update gives me important updates - then it stays as "Shut Down", but once Windows Update is completed it becomes "Sleep" again. This is kind of irking me...any thoughts?

As many will be aware, MS have replaced Control Panel with Settings when you right click on start button.

It is quite easy to reset back to Control Panel as this context menu is customisable.

The link below describes customisation in detail.

Basically the menu entries are all stored in your profile

Below is how it is setup in the release version 14393.

I simply went to same folder in 14946 and replaced all icons including the desktop .ini with the ones from 14393 above.

As you can see below - it now shows control panel, and opens up control panel instead.

Hi,
In reference to the following posting, http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19676126:
I am not the individual who initiated this query but I did have the same issue with my Dell Inspiron 5547, where it wouldn't turn on after a power button shut down.
I followed Hema's instructions by removing the battery and charger and then holding down the power button for a few seconds, and then putting back the parts. It seemed to have done the trick... At least for now. Is this just a temporary fix?
While doing a Google search for a solution I seem to have encountered a number of people who experienced the same issue. Can you also explain why this happens with this particular Dell laptop? Is it a model flaw?
Thank you

Hi guys, is it possible to change the colour of the white start button in Window 8.1?

My screen is suffering from screen burn because of the bright start button and I'm thinking it would be less severe if the button was a darker colour.

I've looked through all personalisations and everything but I can't find a way.

The button does change to black though when "High Contrast White" is selected in the personalisations, but I can't find a way other than that to do it

Thanks

I don't think it's possible to change the color other than what you found. There may be some 3rd party app to do so. I know of none.

Switched to the XP-ish Classic Start Menu, plus Adjust for Best Performance, in the usual prescribed way, no third-party interface-modifiers. All looks & works fine except that the Start button itself looks like TWO buttons -- one atop the other and just slightly out of alignment (screenshot here).

Nothing?s malfunctioning, but it sure looks silly. I haven?t done anything unusual, apart from docking the taskbar on the right side of the screen. What could be causing this, and how can I un-cause it? Would Classic Shell fix this?

Grateful for any clues.

My Start Button works to the extent that I can click it and browse all of my programs. I also have all of the categories on the right side like "Computer", "Control Panel", etc.

What I don't have are any of my recently used programs. That area is blank. I have noticed over the years that I typically use about the same 10-15 programs frequently and the loss of these "instant shortcuts" means I have to drill down through the hierarchy of Start Menu programs to find the one I want to launch. I do have a number of programs pinned to the Taskbar, but I'd really like to have my Start Button work like it used to.

Any suggestions?

PS: The only one that does show up is the Command Prompt which I had copied from its default location because I use it so much. I had it located outside the "Programs" folder on the Start Menu so it would be at the top.

Hello!

I don't know what I did to cause this or how something like this could even happen, but I am hoping someone here might be able to explain and provide a fix. I have tried multiple fixes provided on the net, but none of hem seem to be working.

Currently, on my start menu, the power button icon that used to be there that I could press to show me options like sleep, shutdown, and restart just disappeared, and I can't figure out how to bring it back.

Also, when I press Ctrl+Alt+Del, the menu is just completely gone!

Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Does it have something to do with the registry?

I have attached images that illustrate my problem.

Thanks in advance!

Previously when I would click on the start button, the menu that appeared would reach about half way up the screen. Today, however, it goes all the way to the top of the screen. I checked the buttons properties and all there is as it has always been plus the menu has the same amount of icons on it as usual. Also, the "Most Used Programs" part of the menu is blank after every reboot.

Can anyone shed some light as to what is going on?

Cheers.

Hiya guys,
I've just done a fresh install of Windows 10 on a new build.
I noticed there are a couple of bits I can't seem to get back to how they were before, last time it was the free upgrade from win7, this time it was a clean install via windows 10 media creation tool.

I've attached a screenshot of how my start menu looks now, before reinstalling I had the power, settings and file explorer at the bottom of the start menu as a list, along with 'all apps', which would open the A-Z list of apps.
As you can see now, the power etc are now icons on the left, with all the apps as a permanent presence next to them.

It's not a huge issue, but something that's frustrating me that I can't figure out how to change it back, I don't launch apps from the A-Z so i'd rather not have it there.

Has this changed in a recent update or something? My PC was without internet for a few months until today so maybe I missed a change.

I have checked and I have the latest build of windows.

Thanks, Mark.

I have Vista Home Premium and I noticed yesterday that my "start menu" button did nothing when I clicked it. I am running Norton Internet Security 2012. I ran a restore (disabled anti-virus first) and the computer successfully restored per popup. The start menu button worked as normal. Then I re-activated Norton which required a re-start of my computer. Upon restart, I got to the windows log in screen and it stated that windows was configuring updates (3 of 3). The configuration appeared to complete successfully and then windows continued to boot up however I got a quick peek of an apparent registry edit and then windows completed it's boot up process. After boot-up, I then tried to access the start menu and it did not work (again). I also can not right click on the taskbar either. I have run multiple anti-virus/rootkit scans (malwarebytes, norton, spybot, sophos rootkit) and ALL come back clean.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Sean

Greetings T/S People.... I'm a newbie to this forum, not an overly experienced computer person (altho I do try) and I need help pertaining to the
Start Button and the icons that show when you click on it.

My layout was very basic (I use the Classic style). I had added my own folder called games that was at the very top of the menu, underneath that, was an AOL icon that aol put there & underneath that were the preset ones -programs, documents, settings, search, help, run and shut down.

Now when i click on the start button, games and AOL are completely gone and when i click on programs - it says empty when there should be a 1/4mile long list of things.

I had a mini version of this same problem yesterday - I lost the games and the aol icons, but everything was as it should be under programs, so i was able to get to my system tools and do that restore the system back to an earlier date thing and that fixed it.
Because i no longer have my system tools folder - Ive no clue how to get to the restore thing i did that fixed it.
ALot of my programs came preinstalled on this computer and I sure would like to have everything the way it used to be.

can someone please tell me what to do - I am as lost as lost can be on this

Thanks !!

Some mice are extremely sensitive to any movement especially if have an unstable usb connection.

My friend played a joke on me by setting a screen shot of my desktop as my background and ending the explorer.exe process. I just opened control panel and started a new explorer.exe process but when i did the start menu reverted to a windows 98-ish theme. I've tried many things to get it back to the vista style, and I have found nothing that works. I've had this done to me a couple of times when I used XP on my desktop and everything worked fine. I'm not sure what to do at this point.

I thought I'd change my start up menu so not so many programs opened at start up. Thinking this would be easy I just stopped a few programs that I thought would speed up my start up. I did that thinking that it was easy!!
Now I have lost all programs and internet connection from the laptop and can't do anything with it.
Questions: Do I need to do something easy to bring it back (I tried system restore ) It doesn't have anything I can find to restore it to.
Question: Would I need to reload windows 7? or can I do it an easier way.

Hello everyone.
Today I tried Windows 10... it's not bad at all but for the moment I prefer to stick with Windows 7.
So I downgraded and everything is fine a part from a small detail in the start menu...

As you can see my Windows 7 is in Italian but there are three entries that are in English.
Documents-Pictures-Music instead of Documenti-Immagini-Musica.
All the settings in control panel are on "Italian" so I don't know why this happened.

Any way to fix it?

Thanks.

I'm setting up XP Pro_SP3 on a new desktop.
(I might consider Vista when Microsoft releases
SP2.)

My new desktop is used by me only, so I've
got all administrative rights.

When I right click the start button there are
four context menu options listed for viewing
the start menu folders and shortcuts in a window;
open, explore, open all users, and explore all users.

I tried viewing the start menu every which way I
could think of. No matter what I do, I can't get a
window that shows all the folders and shortcuts.
I've got the system set to show all hidden files,
folders, and extensions. (I realize this option has
nothing to do with the start menu.)

A little help, please.

A:Start Button Context Menu Confusion

Hi Solaris !

What exact folder or shortcut do you want to see ? Items like run, help and support, search, settings and documents don't correspond to an actual folder. The folders and shortcuts under programs will be scattered over the different users (all users, administrator, default user and your_user_name). Browse the c:\documents and settings folder to see all the users.

Hello;

I'm in the process of setting up Win7x64 the way I like it and one of those things is to get a search button on the right side of the Start Menu. I saw in the Vista Forums that it could be done (Search Start Menu Button - Restore after SP1 - Vista Forums) by replacing the one of the existing buttons.

Unfortunately, when I tried the run the supplied REG file, I get the following error:

Cannot Import ..... Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes.

Any ideas on how to work around this?

Sincerely;
Michelle

Hey guys I've got an individual's computer here in our school district running Windows 8.1 that freezes for a good 20-30 seconds anytime the mouse is hovered over the start menu button or when you move the mouse over to bring out the charms bar. It also happens if you have a Windows 8 app open and you move the mouse to the top of the screen to bring down the title bar. It is basically instantaneous and doesn't allow you to click or anything. The weird thing about this problem is the start menu works fine if you use the Windows key on the keyboard.

I've ran a malware check and a virus scan with Avast as well as ran the system files check with sfc /scannow. I also tried disabling live tiles thinking maybe that had something to do with it but that was a dead end also. It happens on all profiles and restarting explorer doesn't help at all. I'm at a point where I'm running out of ideas so if anybody has any I'd greatly appreciate the help. Thanks guys!

My start menu button completely disappeared from the taskbar.
I am using DisplayFusion and Start8 so I am not sure if those could cause this issue.
I am able to still access the start menu easily by clicking the windows key but would love to fix this.
Due to DisplayFusion I can still see the start menu button on the other taskbar but Start8 does not want to style it or anything.

After formatting, I've been to more sites than I can count and tried every solution that's been offered and still can't remove the logoff button at the start menu (the icon with the key). I've tried gpedit.msc and disabled it, rebooted, and still there. Performed all the suggestions as per registry mods, rebooted each time, and still there. In Tweakui, unchecked "Allow Logoff" in IE tab, rebooted, and still there. This is starting to irritate me.

I've come here hoping that you pc gurus can give me a definitive solution because you've helped me before. I know it can be done because I've done it in the past, but forgot to keep a note about how I did it. I also know that this isn't a major problem, but it irks me to no end that I KNOW it can be fixed and I can't fix it now. That's just me.

Many thanks.

With all the hub bub about the missing Start Menu in Windows 8, I though I'd pose this simple question?

If Windows 8 had the start menu would you be more inclined to accept it? To clarify, if Windows 8 had a Start menu included from factory (no 3rd party apps)

A:Poll: If Windows 8 had the start menu button

That really wouldn't matter to me. As soon as I saw what Win8 is about, I created a taskbar tool bar linked to a folder holding shortcuts for all the things, including some folders, I need to get to from the desktop quickly and pinned some shortcuts to the taskbar for things I really want fast access to. Subsequently, I have found no need to use 3rd-party software to provide a startmenu.

And, it doesn't bother me that Win8 starts to the start screen without modification. My desktop tile is uppermost left: thus, I just do a return when the start screen shows up, and I am transported quickly to the desktop. I have no need to start directly to the desktop. Once on the desktop I seldom have any reason to go the metro area. For example, I use this option to for quitting work/play.

I am using Win8 on an older laptop and am not missing anything significant to me--except UEFI/Fast Startup. On the other hand, I don't restart very often. The bottom line here is that I would not buy a new laptop just to have Win8 for "portable" use. On the other hand, if I wanted a new PC laptop, then I wouldn't refrain from buying one because Win8 is installed.

I don't ever plan to install Win8 on my desktop (see system specs). Doing so would be essentially pointless and a fair amount of work. Win8 just doesn't offer me anything that would lead me to think twice about installing it on this machine.

Facing XP's demise, I got a new computer with Win 8 and downloaded and installed the upgrade to 8.1. Struggling with it of course, but thought I had it running fairly well until the Start button on the lower left of the desktop ceased to display the popup menu when I right clicked it. Finally found that the popup would appear when I clicked on the buttons Windows+X. However, I'd still like the popup to again function as it did.
Also, it seems that Restore Points are not created automatically - and the location of Restore Points is very difficult to find.
Any help on any or all of these issues will be appreciated.

I have been experiencing this problem for the last 3 or 4 weeks, and even after a fresh format and instal it is still happening.

When ever i'musing Windows and press the start menu with the mouse, or the windows key with the keyboard, my monitor (Dell 2407p) will go blank, enter power save mode and my fans will speed up. Sounds continue to play in the background for about 10 -15 seconds and then hang. I've tried using the keyboard to shutdown/restart, but nothing happens.

After my format and install of vista everything was fine for a few day, until I installed Command and Conquer Red Alert 3. The game would load up and the intro movies and menus would work fine, but as soon as I got to game play and would move the mouse around the map the same problem would happen in the exact same spot in the game, and now the problem is happening again in windows. This leads me to belive that it might be a problem with my video card or the drivers. I have the lastest drivers installed at the moment (180), but when I first had the problem I was using an older driver.

Is it possible that it's a problem with DX10 because thats the only common thing that I have installed ontop of windows in both cases, or could it be a faulty video card (9800 GX2) or something else.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, cause I have expended all my PC knowledge trying to solve this and an extensive google and forum search has turned up nothing.

Thanks.

Good day,

Just bought a new laptop (Lenovo Z510, with 8.1 pre-installed).

Since the very first day I am having the issue that when I press the "Start Menu" Button, I have to wait about 2 minutes until the menu opens (no exaggeration) . This happens not only the first time after startup, but also if I have not pressed it for about 30 min.

Very regular clicking opens it immediately. Now, i assume that that might have something to do with the internet speed, as I guess the system is trying to download some files/app updates or what-if-nots.

Since I am currently sitting in rural South India, there is nothing I can do to about that issue.

My question:
1. Am I right in assuming the problem comes from there?
2. If it is the Internet, somebody please tell me how to switch off live updates of the Menu.
2. What else could it be?

Advice is highly appreciated, as this small issue drives me regularly insane.

Yours,

M. Enzler

I have my PC set to install updates at 3AM automatically but if I see an update alert in the task-bar, I will usually go ahead and install them manually. I use my PC as my alarm clock and require a password to logon so if windows update reboots my PC in the middle of the night, I am going to have a bad start to my day. I have noticed the past several times after installing windows defender updates manually, the little update symbol in shutdown in the start menu does not go away. When I hover over the button, it says install updates and shut down PC. I check for more updates and there are none available. Normally the shutdown button puts the PC to sleep. When it happens i just reboot to avoid the PC automatically rebooting in the middle of the night and the button goes back to a sleep button. I am afraid though that one day i will forget and oversleep because the PC rebooted. Is there a way to fix this apparent bug?

Start Menu - Add or Remove Search Button

Both of the Search buttons/links pointed at by the Red Arrow are missing in my Start Menu.

Likewise, when I right-click Start/Properties, there is no "Search" by itself in the list.

Is there a way to place it there?

A:Start Menu: Search button/link missing

Maybe you're wondering why I'm asking the question when, having clicked on the link, you see I'm right there on the tutorial page. The reason is twofold: I'm leery of doing anything to the registry. And, having installed Classic Shell, I'm not quite sure if my computer is still Windows 7. I'm actually pleased with what my Windows Explorer now looks like. It's only now that I've discovered it's possible to designate variables in the Libraries Search window. I'd just like to be able to initiate searches from the Start Menu.

I have used the "Customize..." button in Taskbar and Start Menu Properties to hide Control Panels, etc...
I would like to now disable the "Customize..." button so my changes cannot be undone.
I think I should be able to do this through the registry, I just don't know the proper keys.
Additionally, I'm open to any suggestions regarding anything else that should be disabled, or any other means of accomplishing what I"m trying to do.
Thanks.

How to Customize the Start Button right click context menu?

I've used custom Registry entries since Windows 95 to add several stock programs to the right click context menu for the Start button.

In Windows 7 Pro - right click on the Start button to see a context menu:

Two options appear:
Properties
Open Windows Explorer

I've looked in the Registry for these entries, nothing useful, and no apparent way to add to this list. I've gone through this forum looking for similar requests, only one; unanswered.

Has anyone found a solution for this?

I used this REG-file till Vista:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\Notepad]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\Notepad\command]
@="c:\\windows\\notepad.exe"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\Regedit]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\Regedit\command]
@="c:\\WINDOWS\\REGEDIT.EXE"

I also tried some locations from this list - but no luck.

Also this tutorial is only working in Vista.

I think the above REG-File should work - but perhaps some policy rules suppress the appearance of the menu entries.

Hello,

I'm trying to run programs upon boot in W10 but it doesn't work.
I have put them in Start folder and if I go to Task manager I can see the programs are there as well in Startup tab and enabled...but they will not start. I have to manually launch them anyway.

I found out a thread where someone was able to get a fix in the same situation by going to taskbar and menu properties and selecting 'use the Start menu instead of start screen' but alas, my menu has no such tab.

Any ideas how to try to get them programs to launch upon boot would be appreciated. The machine was just freshly clean installed with W10 and it has but a couple of programs on it - exactly the programs I'd like to auto-start. Done all windows updates as well.

Another machine of mine developed a weird glitch in that the start menu doesn't suddenly work at all.
It just raises a red box in the middle of screen saying something like 'oops your start menu doesn't seem to work but don't worry, we'll fix it up for the next boot' and then it promptly reboots, but whatever I try it doesn't get fixed. I have updated the machine several times without issues and it works fine, just can't use the start at all or it reboots...been using it for a month now as it is now, got the big updates and all...but it doesn't get fixed. Start menu would sometimes be rather convenient in a machine, no? Well any ideas about how to try to fix that as well would be welcome.

The latter machine I might just re-install clean anew. I ... Read more

As far as running a program, this is pretty much the same procedure in Windows 10:
