clicking on partially obscured window to make it active does not work

Q: clicking on partially obscured window to make it active does not work

Sometimes, for no apparent reason, it becomes impossible to click on a partially obscured window to make it the active window; it's as if the window in the foreground has "gone modal" on me.

Conversely, sometimes a partially obscured window will become the active window and come to the foreground even if I have not clicked on it.

Sometimes when I'm in a browser (ANY browser, not just a particular one), and click the back button, the browser goes back, as it should, but then after a couple of seconds will return to the page I had just been looking it, as if it had a mind of its own.

There is a long thread on Technet about this, with many people reporting the problem as early as 2009 in Vista. I'm running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. I hope there are some good ideas here on this forum, as these problems are making my system unusable, because they happen every few minutes! Arrrgh.

These problems happen in normal mode as well as Safe Mode.

To temporarily fix the problem, I must CTRL-ALT-DELETE and then click CANCEL to return to the desktop.

Here's what I have done to troubleshoot:
1. Bought a new wireless mouse and new wireless keyboard.
1a. Tried a new wired USB mouse.
2. Checked for new device drivers.
3. Run ASUS M/B diagnostics. All's well according to them.
4. Scanned for viruses (using two different A/V programs one after the other, not installed simultaneously)
5. Restored to a restore-point from a month ago, before the problem started happening.
6. Made sure none of the USB devices is participating in Power Management.
7. Disabled/uninstalled Antivirus.
8. Made sure that the mouse settings are normal (hovering-only does not bring a window forward; you have to click)

I have been to several forums but unfortunately so far no joy. I have heard you guys are good so fingers crossed! I have having a problem with my computer. I have managed to narrow it down to a problem when Microsoft Outlook (03) is running. I used this for my emails so have it opend and minimised on my screen. After it has processed the send and receive(or if in fact i am closing the program down) it clicks several times and then throws me off whatever papge i am working on. It doesnt shut anything down. Its just that when i am typing its like the mouse has clicked off screen so nothing is typing out. Very frustrating as you can imagin. So i am constantly havening to check what i am typing and click back on screen.

I work from a laptop and run Windows xp service pack 3. I run Norton Internet Security. I have run a virus scan and its clean. Although 3 weeks ago i did have trojan.brisv.a!inf but removed it as advised. i have also check both my mouse pad and my external mouse. so its definately not a mouse problem. The problem only seems to exist with Outllook open. If anybody can suggest anything then i would be very grateful. Many thanks.

So lately I've been hearing this clicking noise in the background of my desktop, as if I was selecting something, but I'm not. And when it does this, it throws off the box I'm in. So like, I'm typing this now, but I have to reslect the box SEVERAL times to complete my sentence because the box keeps becoming inactive.
Also, in IE, which I never use, (I use firefox) I keep getting porn pop-ups the moment I turn on my computer, and occasionally in the middle of usage.
Thanks in advance if you guys could help me out.

Hi there,

I looked around in Control Panel to no avail. I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'bouncing cursor' or 'making windows smaller'... are you talking about Aero Snap? Sorry if I'm misunderstanding.

I had an external HDD put in as an external HDD, but for some reason it is marked as active (when connected with my normal HDDs windows will not boot), can I make it inactive WITHOUT loosing all the data (It has only my movie collection ripped from DVD on it) nothing else. I only found out the other day when I replaced my PSU with a new one, and windows would not boot until I disconnected it. (after having it connected without a problem for about 2 years).

A:Make an Active drive non-active

In a standard Windows PC, the active partition would be C, or System Reserved if you have that partition. Do you have both of those partitions and is either of them marked "active"?

The active flag has nothing to do with data.

A screen shot of Windows Disk Management would help.

Is there anyway of fixing this?

I have an Alienware 17 laptop, and I have had problems with it shutting down while playing games, but it has not happened anywhere else until yesterday, when I started to restore my laptop to factory settings. I was using the Alienrespawn program to reset my laptop, hoping it would solve the shutdown problem, but part of the way through the process, my laptop shut itself down (which is slightly ironic). When I started it up again, and pressed F8 to try and restart the process, it said that I did not have windows installed and needed a disc. I was able to start the computer and log in, but most of my programs had been deleted, so it is basically useless now. I tried using the Windows 7 install disc that came with this laptop, but for some reason, it is not working, and I have no idea what to do to fix this problem. If anyone could hep me solve this problem, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Okay, when I first noticed the problem, I tried to use ctrl alt del to stop IE, but the device manager crashed.
So I turned off the computer, and when I tried restarting, the virus started immediately.
After restarting in safe mode, I tried to run My antivirus program (avira), but gave up when the scan was only 5% complete
....after 6 hours
after that, I used System Restore to roll the computer back a week.
Upon restarting, the virus was still present, but partially inactive.
after managing to bypass the virus' redirects, I found and downloaded Malwarebytes AMW.
Successfully ran full scan in safe mode, MWB found and removed a few infected files, including AV Securiy's desktop shortcut.
When my computer restarted this time, the keyboard would not respond at all, but I'm still able to use the onscreen keyboard
Ran MWB again, and this time the second it found a file, Avira's activeguard blocked and removed a malware file, followed instantly by 9 more.
However, The keyboard still didn't work and AV Security's Icon was STILL in the start menu.
Found bleepingcomputer's uninstall guide, downloaded and ran TDSS killer and found...
And that's my story.
So, Can anyone help me, please?

A:Removed AV Security 2012 (partially) Now keyboard doesn't work...

Oh yeah, sorry about forgetting to mention this earlier, but I've tried different keyboards and also uninstalling and reinstalling the keyboard driver both normally and in safe mode, with no luck.

You need to shrink the C: partition to smaller size, and then create a new partition in the previously used space - I recommend you use Partition Wizard 7 for this task. Refer to Option 3 here:

If you want to clean install Windows 7, then use this tutorial:

I cannot get my HP Compaq Presario CQ56 notebook to recover if I put it into sleep mode. I have tried a number of 'cures', non of which have worked. The latest 'solution' I have read is to go into Disk Management and make C: drive 'Active'. However, the process throws up dire warnings that, if I proceed it may make the notebook inoperable.
Apart from C: drive partition (297 GBs), which shows as "Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)", I also have a System partition (199 MBs) which shows as "Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition)" and an HP Tools partition which I guess has no bearing on this inquiry.
Am I correct in assuming that the System partition contains the Operating System and not C: drive and this being the case I should definitely NOT make C: drive active? Very sorry if this is pretty basic to most.

A:Should I make C drive Active?

Not likely you should make the C drive active.

Your system partition is active and that's fine.

Windows is on the C partition. The boot files for Windows are on the system partition.

Some machines do NOT have a system partition. In those cases, yes, the C drive should be marked active.

I know nothing about HP notebooks, but it appears the cause of your problem is not related to which partition is marked active. Look elsewhere.

Do I need to set up DNS?

A:Do I have to have DNS if I make an Active Directory?

What server are you talking about...2000 or 2003?

If it is a windows server the answer is yes...But there is a work around..

I have a Windows 2003 enterprise running as a file server..

Put your computers in the same workgroup...

put static IP's on your computers..

computers need to be on a router or same LAN

Have the same user name and password on the sever and desktop machine..

Put a file on the server and share the permissions of that file put your user name. Give yourself amin or poweruser rights...

Log onto you desktop machine and do a network search or go to our "run" and

type in \\"server computer name here"

you should have a folder pop up and it should be the shared folder on the sever or you might get a logon screen pop up..either way. I you get the log on screen just log on and then the folder will open...

Now after you see the shared folder on your desktop machine you can close it...

Now click on my computer and you should see your folder listed just under the drives should say network share..

right click on the netork share...send shortcut to the desktop...

Now even after you reboot ..once you log onto the desktop computer the shared server folder will be there....

What browser are you talking about? Most all have the ability to set the color of visited links in their setup menus. In IE it is in Tools -> Internet Options -> General -> Colors. In Firefox Tools -> Options -> Content -> Colors.

But the default color schemes on these browesers should already change colors of links when visited.

Some sites, if you go back to the page with the back button, you may need to refresh to see the link change,

Hello all, I am new to these forums so please forgive me if I put this post in the wrong area or something of that nature.

I'm running a 2 month old Toshiba Satellite PC, when suddenly all of my Partitions, except for my C: drive disappeared. My computer also failed to recognize my CD/DVD Rom drive, however, after searching around I was able to find a lot of people with the same problem and recovered that Partition and the use of the drive by deleting the upperfilters in my registry. But the other Partitions are still gone and marked as inactive in my Disk Management. This is what I am looking at:

As you can see, it shows an additional two partitions, but they cannot be made active by right clicking them. When I right click them, all options are "greyed out" making it impossible to preform and actions.

I tried using a couple partition recovery softwares, but to no avail, because I am not trying to recover lost partitions, I am trying to activate partitions that are already existing. I have norton 360 installed and ran several anti-virus programs that came up cold. However, I did find one gentlemen on youtube, that had the same problem and fixed it by restoring the computers factory default settings. This is the video: That's almost identical to my problem, and like the gentlemen in the video states, there does not seem to be a lot of info available to this particular situation, unless I missed it.

A:All of my Partitions disappeared and I cannot make them active.

As this may be caused by an infection, install, update and run a full scan with Malwarebytes, in Safe Mode if necessary.

Next run Partition Wizard Partition Recovery Wizard - Video Help to try to recover the missing partition.

The only partition which should be marked Active is the one intended to boot Win7, which for your model is likely the Recovery partition. However it is missing it's System flag which signifies where the System boot files reside, so I would boot the Win7 DVD or System Repair Disk to run Startup Repair - Run up to 3 Separate Times to correct any problems with the boot files and config.

If you decide to start over you can try running Toshiba HDD Recovery Utility or get the superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 without the corrupting preinstalled bloatware.

I recently re-installed Diablo II after a long break. Sometime while i'm playing, I get disconnected. When I minimize it, I try using my browser (google chrome) and it doesn't work or goes incredibly slow. Then a few minutes later, a popup would say Trojan found and removed: Exploit-Obscured which was under the temp. files for chrome. A few minutes after that, everything usually goes back to normal or it happens all over again. It had happened a few times before I installed Diablo II but has been occuring multiple times everyday whilst playing D2 now. Help?

I also tried running 'Clean Up!' in safe mode as I was told by someone this might help, but the problem came back. Also, C: doesn't open when I click on it - however I can type in c: in the windows explorer bar at the top and it happens instantaneously. Hi, I have a tablet with Windows 10x64. I use it with a bluetooth mouse and keyboard. Problem is that both are picked up only when the desktop shows up, but they are inactive during boot (only a wireless keyboard will work, I tested it). So my question is, how can I make Windows load the necessary bluetooth drivers during boot (before the desktop shows up)? I need this because at startup I'm prompted for a password (drive is encrypted) and the only way to type it is either with a wired or wireless keyboard, but not a bluetooth one. Thanks.

first of all, let me start by saying that this forum has helped many times in the past with tutorials, usefull tips and tweaks and problem solving without the need of taking me out of lurker status, but now, after hitting google's 15th page several times already to find only loosely correlated solutions I've realized the urge for a more direct approach.

How can I set one partition as active?
(tried many methods and none worked so far)

the context:
I'm trying to recover data from a faulty HD using a linux live CD (ubuntu rescue remix) to image the data and try to retrieve it later on. Here's where the problem starts: apart from the usb from which I launched the live CD, no other devices were showing (lshw listed nothing, except the usb itself). After some research I remembered that my MBR always gets f***up after a re-install - not entirely sure if it's when amd chipset [sata] updates microsoft msahci or after I move the user folders from my ssd to my hd (symlinks), I also recall something about sata ports creating some problems - having to use port 3 for (re)install or something like that.

Anyway, I began to try fixes for this issue when the problems with the MBR started to show it's ugly teeth again. The thing is, I can't launch windows repair* (from the install CD) because it doesn't recognize the current OS. It simply doesn't list it. This tool couldn't find any drives in the same manner lshw for linux didn't.
I created an usb disk and booted from Partition Wizard to find out that the only devices it recognized/loaded were my dvd drive and the usb it was on.
this doesn't merit a new post, but I just found out that I've been using the pre-install win7 disk instead of the installation one (OEM win7 pro x64 Version). That explains why I've been going straight to the command prompt when booting from the dvd. Anyway, nothing new yet. OS isn't listed as usual, and list disk/vol/part returned no results (no disks found). And boot utils still fail because they can't find a path.

- problem:
-- MBR/bootmanager are definetely messed up (my best guess)

- symptoms:
-- can't list or find devices [hard disks] from linux live CD/similar
-- can't list or find devices [hard disks] nor the currently installed OS itself from Win7 repair disk

- thus:
- can't rebuild/repair the MBR

note worthy:

I had no problem to run 2 applications at the same time on games like Borderlands 2, using the SplitTool from Split Play.
I have no problem run 2 game windows in 1 screen of almost any game i have tried so far.
I will explain how for those who might need this.

1.Locate the game exe in your Program Files or where you have it installed.
2.Simply hold right click on the Game exe and move the mouse. A window will pop-up. Select ''Create Shortcuts Here'' .
3.Make 2 Shortcuts this way and Rename them (for example Player 1 and Player 2).
4.Right click the Player 1 Shortcut and go to Properties. On Target paste this command at the end of what is already there: '' -AlwaysFocus''
(With the Space at the beginning of command and Without the '' ).
5.Right click the Player 2 Shortcut and go to Properties. On Target paste this command at the end of what is already there: '' -AlwaysFocus -ControllerOffset=1 -SaveDataId=2''
(With the Space at the beginning of command and Without the '' ).
6.Open Player 1 and Player 2 as administrators and make sure they are not on full screen. You should be able to run both and make a Lan-game on 1 PC screen.
7.If you are going to use gamepads and game supports gamepads then make sure you only use player's 1 gamepad on Player 1 Screen without touching 2nd gamepad. Then click with mouse on 2nd Player Screen to make it active and use only the 2nd Player gamepad. That s... Read more

I took out the SSD hard drive I had in my laptop
I had a backup on Acronis of the current SSD's state
I had a super clever genius idea: I decided to format the C drive of the old hard drive
Damn, damn and bl**dy damn!
Now the MBR is gone
I've spent many many hours on this damn problem

I have it hooked to my new laptop in an external enclosure
In disk management, it wont give me the option of making it be active
I can only make a simple volume

Why cant I see make active volume option??
Is there anyway of making active without getting a 3rd party tool (even if free)?
If I have no choice, I assume the best choice is the one from easeus? (That's the one that keeps popping up in search results)

A:How do I make an external hard disc active?

OK... I solved this one - after many painful hours!

I used Acronis to restore my backed up image
It set the default option to GPT for the hard drive
GPT is some other form for the hard drive other than MBR
A GPT hard drive cannot be made primary or active

I had to use EaseUs (while installing being careful to avoid installing spamware)
I wasn't 100% sure if MBR was actually erased - I did format the main C drive
Either way, I wiped everything and put my image back

Everything working fine now

I would like to say I inadvertently made by secondary hard drive active.. It was not. Is there a way to make it not active? As it is listed in the BIOS as the non-boot drive, there doesn't appear to be a conflict at this time. But I would like to correct it if possible. Thanks for all assistance.

A:How to make a secondary hard drive NOT Active?

Removing the Active Flag from a Partition
(on a drive that's not used as a boot drive)

Partition - Mark as Inactive

Make sure you choose the correct Disk / Partition !

Open an elevated command prompt in Windows:
1. Click Start Orb
2. In search box, type cmd
3. Right-click on cmd.exe and choose 'Run as Administrator'

In the elevated command prompt type in the following commands:

SELECT DISK n (where n is the number of the HDD in question)
SELECT PARTITION n (where n is the number of the active partition you wish to make inactive)

I have copied my HiJackThis log below.

I've already used Ad-aware 6 and Spybot on this problem. I've also bought and used, Spyware Doctor. I have a paid version of AVG anti-virus which is fully updated and operational and all my Windows are updated.

The problems I haven't been able to get rid of are as follows: a pop-up window/ browser page (Ron Ads) and clicking noises. Also, my computer sometimes doesn't shut down normally. I get an, End Program box for: "SysFader".

Sometimes folders on my desktop won't open and I have to do a restart and my Firefox browser sometimes won't respond and I have to close out. The most common problem however is the clicking noises and the pop up window (called Ron Ads)

Requesting feedback on these problems. Thanks in advance.

Exploit-obscured html

A few weeks ago, right before I took a two week vacation without my computer, I did something stupid and allowed an ActiveX control that looked like it was from a trusted source to be installed, even after my software warned me not to do it. Since I returned from the trip, my computer has gotten slower and slower, especially in regard to surfing the internet. When I tried to update spybot today, the download manager said that it would take 19 hours. I cannot update windows I can't even get onto the update page, it will not load. I think I was fairly up-to-date before all this happened (Windows XP Home Edition, service pack 2, updates fairly recently).

At this point, any web browsing is almost out of the question, though my boyfriend's computer has been extremely helpful in finding this forum.

I usually browse with Netscape 8.1 if that matters and is not too blasphemous to say. I used the adminstrator profile to create this hijackthis log, though I usually do all my work in a different profile if that matters.

Here's is what I did so far:

I had been running updated Mcafee virus checker and firewall besides the hardware firewall. They never found anything, nor did Ad-aware, except for some green light cookies. Yesterday I decided to do an online check using Trend Micro's online virus checker. The Trend Micro checker found nothing, but twice, during the time it was running (which was hours with my slow system), McAfee said that it... Read more

Well, no, you cannot have an active window without it popping up to the front of the screen. The only time that this is possible is if there is another application window that has been specifically created by the developer with the "Keep on Top" flag. An example is the Task Manager that can be opened using <CTRL>+<SHIFT>+<ESC>. Task Manager is always at the top of the stack, whether it is the active window or not.

Sorry I couldn't give any other help on this...

In the event I get one of those malware popups that you don't want to click on (not even the 'X') how do I get rid of it? Something about right clicking on the taskbar I think or there may be a keystroke shortcut.

A:Closing Browser window without clicking

I would think a right click on the IE icon on the taskbar would give you the option to close the browser. It does in all other instances I can think of.

If that fails, you can always click "control, alt, delete" and get to the task manager and close it that way.

Hi All. Newbie here.

I'm running Windows 7 Professional/64 bit on a Dell Latitude E series. I'm also using a Windows Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500.

Everyday, several times during the day, when I release my mouse to use the keyboard, the active window just disappears leaving only my desktop visible. It will reappear as soon as I move the mouse again. Most times, the active window will then remain on the screen but sometimes, when I let go of the mouse to begin typing again, it will disappear again.

Now this is nothing serious and I don't lose any data. Nor is it a case of not being able to bring the active window back up. However, it is very annoying and if there is a way to correct it, I'd love to do so.

Any ideas are appreciated.

I am running XP on a Dell Dimension and every 30 seconds the window you're viewing goes inactive. I hope that makes sense but to be sure I'll describe it another way.
You can be typing an email in Outlook and all of a sudden, for no apparent reason, the window stops being the active window and you are no longer typing. Now you can wait about 10 secs. and the window will reactivate by itself or grab the mouse and do it manually.
It's driving us batty and so far we cannot find a solution. I have even gone so far as to reinstall Windows but no luck.

I hope someone can help,

A:Active Window "inactivates"

If you have tried reinstalling and are having the same issue, then that leads me to believe it might be hardware related. The simpliest and first thing that comes to mind is your mouse. It sounds like it is almost like your mouse is sending signals that move the curser, or tell your computer to activate a different window, or a different part of a window. Replace the mouse and see if the issue dissapears. At least that is what I would try first - mostly because it is a simple test.

I've started to experience a problem with my 9 month old laptop. It happened once a few months ago, then a couple weeks ago, now twice in one week so am under the impression it is only going to get worse.

I have searched a number of forums/threads and some people have similar issues, but not exactly the same. Doesn't seem there were any real resolutions, only people suggesting generic fixes like, 'Did you reboot?'

The problem pops up sporatically. It can happen 20 times in one minute, then disappear for 10 minutes. When I am in an active window, and this can be anything from Word, Outlook, Firefox, Skype, MSN Messenger, or Google Talk, I can be typing away or scrolling down the page in Firefox when all of a sudden the active window becomes inactive. That means that I can no longer type or scroll. Each time this happens I have to re-click on the window. Sometimes it reverts back the next second, sometimes 20 seconds...sometimes minutes. It is very annoying and inconvenient.

I have: rebooted several times, tried changing the background profiles, and created another user account. In that other use account, the issue doesn't occur (yet anyway). That would leave me to believe I may have something wrong with my profile based on other forum topics. If the resolution is to create a new profile, that is a large pain because it takes a long time to get everything the way you want it, all the software you need, and tweaked to your liking. If I have to do this ever... Read more

For the last few months I have had a problem with my computer. The top window will, of it's own accord, become unactive and I have to click into the window with the mouse to be able to enter information into the window. It doesn't seem to matter what program I am working in, from Excel to Simply Accounting or even my email program. As I'm an accountant, it's become a huge pain when entering numbers to look up and find all info I've typed has disappeared into the ether. I am running Windows XP Professional (latest version, update regularly) on a 3 gig processor, with 2 gig of RAM. I have a Logitech cordless mouse and keyboard installed which work fine (other than not allowing me to utilize the hot keys), Does anyone have any idea what the problem is and how I can fix it? I've been having a problem ever since downloading and installing GorMedia Webcam Software Suite. It came with a bunch of malware including moviedea.exe and msnetcore.exe, which I've deleted along with the original Webcam Software.  I've removed all malware from the computer.
Ever since then, I've been having the following problems:
1) Open applications windows will randomly switch. For example, I may have two Firefox windows open. I will be typing something in Firefox and it will switch to the other Firefox window automatically. The window will also sometimes flash but remain in the same application rather than switching.
2) The applications list on my taskbar will randomly close and open. If I have a Firefox window up, the indicator on the taskbar will randomly close and then open back up by shrinking and then expanding back.
I am on Windows 7 64 bit desktop computer.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

It doesn't matter what program I am using. I will hear a ding and shortly after, my active window will go inactive. I tried checking the Task Manager, but I couldn't see anything wrong. Can you help?

I have Windows XP. IE put some kind of search program on my computer without asking. (ETA: IE just tried to have me dl it again. It is called coollist.searchmiracle. For some reason DAP automatically pops up with the program asking if I want to dl it.) When I checked on it, it said that I had ot dl the Uninstall program. I wasn't thinking properly (I just wanted it gone), so I downloaded it, and uninstalled it. Then I started having this problem.

I have Norton, so I immediately made sure it was completely updated and ran a virus scan. Nothing was found.

I downloaded Spybot - SD and tried to use that, but I had so many problems running it that I uninstalled it. While trying to run SB, I had several windows pop up stating that something had changed in my registry. I accepted this because I didn't know what else to do.

I checked the archives here and found someone who was having a similar problem. You recommended downloading HijackThis and posting the log here, so that is what I am doing.

Thanks for your help,

I am running a desktop dell on windows 7 any help regarding this issue is highly appreciate it if you require any more info let me know

PD: i have already scanned the computer several times for illegal programs adware malware viruses etc apparently this doesn't seem to be the problem

A:active window problem

When a window loses focus for no apparent reason, it's often caused by some persistent or repetitive background process, so you need to take a look at those.

I am currently running a Dell XPS 13 with Windows 8.1.

What happens is that I might be writing up an email in firefox and every 10-20 seconds the window deactivates and I have to click on it again - mightily frustrating. It occurs with other programs as well.

My first reaction to this problem was that it must be malware but my thorough scans have come up with zilch problems. Then I updated all my touchpad, graphics etc. drivers and that did not help also. I uninstalled applications like Bing Bar thinking that it kept deactivating my window but to no avail!

Any suggestions or ideas would be mightily helpful. I have run out of ideas. Now when I want to do proper typing I will do it in a full screen 'metro' app since they do not deactivate.....

A:Active window keeps deactivating.

By deactivating do you mean closing or minimizing? Could you be that you are resting your palms on the touchpad when typing? That can close or minimize some windows depending on which touchpad settings and software is being used for the touch pad also sensitivity settings.

My touchpad can be used as a big button to close, minimize things. Also using certain finger gesters I can zoom and maximize windows. Check your touchpad settings.

Ever since i went to Window7, i can't tell which window is active when i glance at the task bar. All of the window icons are clear, which makes it almost impossible to tell which one is active.

Does anyone know how i can change the settings or something so that i can tell which window is active. Thanks for any suggestions.

I have a google icon on my 'quick launch' toolbar that when I open it (it opens in 'Explorer'), the active window opens up at the left edge of my screen. I would like to center the active window when it opens. Other than moving it manually each time it opens, how can I have it open in the center or wherever I would like it to open? How do I save the active window position? Anyone with an answer?

A:Active window positioning

First I went to <My Computer<Tools<Folder Options<View ...and discovered that the box for 'Remember each folders view setting' was not checked. I checked it and then 'applied' it. Then I opened 'Internet Explorer' and centered the active window where I wanted it. I closed it and then I opened my Google icon on my quick launch toolbar and it centered exactly where the 'Internet Explorer' window was last open. Any shortcut icons I have on my desktop that open in 'Explorer' open in the same position.

Hello there :3 I recently upgraded my OS to 64bit and noticed a very, very annoying issue. Active window randomly blinks (not only blints, but "refreshes" itself, that can be noticed in a task bar as window disappears in it for a quarter of second and then appears back and the responding of it stops for a moment). And it greatly affects my gaming experience as well as when I'm holding any button, after window refreshes I need to press it again and in certain games it's frustrating, annoying and distracting. Please help me to solve this very weird problem :3 Drivers are up to date (yes, all of them!). Thank you in advance :3

Anytime I have a window open, be it Firefox, Word, Start Menu, etc., this will happen every 30 seconds or so. It started happening a few days ago, seemingly out of nowhere. Any thoughts on what may be causing this problem?

I have looked everywhere for a fix to this problem and can't seem to find it anywhere...

When I have multiple applications/programs running and my mouse leaves one window, that window self minimizes. In XP I actually got to decide when I wanted to minimize or change windows. Windows 8 apparently does it for me...AND IT JUST DRIVES ME ABSOLUTELY INSANE!

Example: I have two Windows Explorer windows open so I can manually move files. When a dialog box pops up to give me the status of the files being moved, if my mouse does not remain on this box it just disappears into the background.

Example 2: When I run my password manager program. When it pops up for me to enter my password, if my mouse is not on it, it just disappears into the background. Also when it prompts me for which password/account/user name to use on a site, I have to click on an option in basically less than a second or the entire window disappears into the background. Absolutely maddening!

Not sure I have explained this very well, but hopefully someone understands and has a solution to this one. I really like Windows 8, but would love it if this mother of all Windows 8 annoyances for me) was no more.

Thanks for your time and knowledge in advance,

David Lueck

A:Active Window Switching

You may be getting mouse gesture swipe behavior. Press Winkey-q then arrow down to setting and type "edge" (without the quote) in the search box. One of those two may be the culprit.

To help finding the mouse pointer. press Winkey-x then pree 'p' for control Panel. Click Mouse settings. In the mouse pointer Tab check to show mouse cursor when pressing Control key. It actually circles the position when you release the Control key. I like to use it as my Laptop looks a bit dim outdoors.

hi guys im looking for some help with this rather annoying problem...

the active window that i am using either on msn messenger, a forum or in IE keeps deactivating itself and stops me from typing...

i will be typing a message and then hit enter to send it and then i look up to find only half of my message is actually in the window because it is no longer active... (it's happened about 3 times whilst typing this message) i type and then look up to see that the active window is no longer active... in IE and msn messenger the top toolbar has changed to a lighter grey colour than normal and i have to click in the window i was using to make it active again and continue typing...

does anybody know what may be causing this and how to fix the problem as it is now getting very annoying...

appologies if anything i said didn't make much sense.. i am not very technical when it comes to problems like this but i would like some help from those who know a little more than me to try and fix this problem...

thanks in advance to anybody who has any suggestions to try and help me sort this out.

I'm looking for a software that blurs or darkens everything except the active window.
I'm currently using Jedi Concentration, but it requires me to press a key each time I want it to get into action.
What I'm looking is a software that does it automatically - each time I select a window, it would blur or darken the rest.

I'm using Windows.

Thanks in advance.

Running Windows XP with SP2 installed. Click on Start/Run/MSCONFIG and the dialog box pops up for a second and then disappears. Same thing happens when I Ctrl-ALt-Del, and then click Task List, it pops up for a second and then disappears.

I am logged on as the administrator. Other than that the computer seems to run OK. I have checked for Virus and Spyware (NAV, Ad-Aware, Spy-Bot). Have also reloaded my video card drivers.

Any thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hi all after doing a few changes to my win7 os Ive managed to nail this problem down to the core problem.

My wireless adapter sotware is the culprit it steals your focus and goes nowhere because it doesnt run an active window just runs silent in background (nothing to display)
So after each start up I close its window completely (no background taskbar icon)

I have not yet checked with manufacturer web site for similar issue I use TP-LINK.

Good day All
At our office we have a setup with the Sage Pastel Accounting software running on a Windows 7 machine as the Accounting Server. The problem that we are experiencing seems to be an
intermittent one although recently it seems to be happening more often than usual. When the user clicks on the statement button to generate a statement for customers, a window opens up allowing them to select a range of customers for whom to generate statements.
Normally this would become the active window within the Pastel application. But for some unknown reason this window appears for a split second and then becomes hidden behind the main Pastel application window waiting for the user to select 'OK' or 'cancel'.
I have tried using the alt+tab method but this just cycles through the different applications and windows that are open. Using the Ctrl+tab option works within the Pastel software to cycle through different windows open within Pastel but not when there
is an active window that requires input from the user. I am unable to move the main Pastel window to access the active window behind it at all. When I click on the main Pastel window the PC reports the default error beep to tell me I am not clicking on the
active window within Pastel?.but I cannot get to that window because its behind the main Pastel window. The main window just sits on top of every other application and window that is open. Using the cascade option and also the vertical and horizontal alig... Read more

So I can't access the boot menu to load windows installation disk from drive or usb, I've tried all the keys from the startup and I can't even go into windows installation disk to repair my MBR.

I also can't make my primary partition active through disk management or CMD, when I try, the option is grayed out for me.

In CMD, it simply says: "The selected disk is not a fixed MBR disk. The ACTIVE command can only be used on fixed MBR disks, so I'm assuming my MBR is corrupted. But I can't fix my MBR without going into the boot menu so I'm lost here.

Note: I can still reformat the computer by loading it from windows but not from the startup.

How do I get the picture to maximize automatically when I click on a desktop icon with Internet Express as the default browser. With Google Chrome as the default browser, it works fine.

A:Maximizing window when clicking on desktop icon

Welcome to Seven Forums thebunns. If you mean you want to click on the Internet Explorer icon and have IE open as a normal window, then do this.

Right click the IE icon and click on Properties. On the shortcut tab click on the drop down next to Run: and choose Normal Window. Click Apply, then OK. It should now open as a normal window. You can also choose Maximized if indeed that is really what you want.

Hello, and first of all, thanks for reading on this fine Christmas eve. My computer has been bugging me to death to the point that i have to ask for help, which is unusual, because i normally find solutions through others answers.

However, i have seen many methods of correcting this, however sadly none of them have worked for me, i think it may be because they were designed for WIN XP, and I'm running Vista Home Premium.

First of all, i have the open each folder in the same window checked. And another thing is IE7 won't run, i think maybe these problems may be connected, but thats not too big of a problem, as i mainly use Firefox.

Thanks in advance, i look forward receiving help from this wonderful community.

I have an issue with copying or moving files between folders in Windows Explorer using Home Premium 7. I installed Windows 7 a year ago and faced this issue. I got rid of it, but don?t recall how. In the last few days, it has returned----I don?t know why.

When I grab a file with the mouse and drag it to the left to another folder, an icon appears on top of that file. The icon is totally unnecessary and obscures my view of the destination folder. This often causes the file to drop into the wrong folder. The icon changes depending on the type of file being moved.

In the screenshot below, I am attempting to drag a Word file from the right side of Explorer to another folder on the left side. Notice the postage stamp-sized ?Word? icon with the large ?W? that covers up portions of the directory tree.

How do I get rid of that completely pointless icon?

I thought it was some setting in folder view options, but I have played with those settings to no effect.

A:File drag and drop in Explorer obscured by icon

It is actually a good feature. It tells you which folder it will be dropping thr file into.

By your picture if you released it at that point it would drop it in the temp folder.
You align the mouse to show folder name you want to drop it into.

Drop it misaligned as XP use to be and it could go in the folder you want or in the folder on either side. Or even drop between folders.

Go to this tutorial.
Visual Effects Settings - Change[2]=Appearance

Show window content while dragging may be need to be unchecked. If that doesn't work put the check back in the box.

When in either Outlook or a browser window, and inputting information into a field, the active window disappears momentarily exposing the desktop to view. It still takes all keystrokes in the background, the subject window is still active because any keyboarding is reflected when the window reappears a few seconds (5-10) later. It seems to take down all open windows.

Running Windows 7 Pro 32, on a Lenovo T400 laptop - Core 2 Duo P8800, 3GB PC3-8500, 160GB-7200rpm, ATI Mobility Radeon 3470 with 256MB connected to a ThinkPad Essentail Port Replicator. Resolution - dropped to 1024x768

This is really frustrating. Every time I am typing in the current window, it sunndenly stops being the active window. Even now as I type this.

If anyone has a cure for this most anoying problem, it would be very much appreciated.

If I cannot resolve this, I will have to return to XP, which works great on all our other systems.

Thank you - Regards - Steve
