Unable to reach desktop!! please help!!

Q: Unable to reach desktop!! please help!!

ok I'm a bit paranoid now, and i'm using my brother pc to post this. I started my laptop and everything was fine but after the windows loading screen, it suddenly restarted then something showed "windows didn't shut down correctly please select from a list: start windows normally, and there are 3 other options i forgot." SO i choose "start windows normally" then it showed the windows loading screen again, then after that it restarted again and showed that "windows didn't shut down correctly" screen again! please help!!!!! I swear it's not my power.

thanks!

A: Unable to reach desktop!! please help!!

Let's not panic yet!

Try again, this time select Safe Mode instead of Start windows normally. Come back to tell if you could boot your laptop to Safe Mode.

Hi everyone,I recently came back from holiday with an infected memory stick. When I put it in my computer, Mcafee spotted a trojan. The data was important to me, so I went ahead and downloaded. Mcafee seemed to have stopped the virus and my computer continued to operate; however, when I restarted I could no longer reach the desktop. It hangs after the user log in. I'm an idiot I know. Fortunately I can still run programs by starting the task manager and going to "Run" in the dropdown menu. You can see below that something is seriously wrong with the startup tasks like userinit.exe, of which I have around 20 and which don't close after hours. Lsass.exe similarly doesn't close and takes up about 40-60% of the cpu. When I shut the computer down, an error message appears saying, "userinit.exe failed to initialize because windows is shutting down." In other words, userinit.exe is not initializing.I have tried to run through your preparation process as best as possible. It has taken several days. I can give more detail on what I have done if requested.I scanned with Mcafee Security Center, but it didn't find anything. It claims to be updated and won't let me update (it hangs on 'searching for updates'). I'm worried perhaps the update facility has been damaged.I scanned with Avira anti-virus (a free download) and deleted what was found.I updated Ad-Aware and scanned several times, with restarts. The last time I scanned nothing was found.I scanned twice with Spy-bo... Read more

I purchased a new xps13 from dell over two weeks ago.  Currently the laptop is working fine, however, I've tried tried to register the laptop under 'my products' multiple times since receiving the laptop.  Whenever I try to enter the service tag, it keeps giving me an error "Products not found. There’s no match for the Service Tags that were entered."  At first I thought maybe it was because the laptop was new, but it has been 2 weeks now and I'm still getting the same message.
Not only that, but I've been trying to contact dell through email for 2 weeks now and I always get the same "you will get a response in 24hour" reply but nobody ever replies.  I feel like the biggest moron right now because I paid for 3 years of 'premium support' and you won't even answer a freaking email.  I'm pretty close to just returning this laptop and buying a piece of *** macbook because at least apple responds to support requests.

Hello. Here's my problem:

I got home from work one day and my wife tells me the computer "just stop working". Confused I ask her how? Unable to tell me, I decided to turn on the computer. Unfortunately, nothing happened. Since I believed the prob was the power supply, as the fan was not turning, I bought a new one and tried again. Still nothing happened. So I decided to try a new motherboard, Biostar M7VIG 400. Still no luck. So I tried a new CPU, AMD Athlon XP 2400+. Now the PC has power, the keyboard lights up, the DVD and DVD-r drives respond, and the CPU fan runs but it does not continue to POST. Everything stops there, the fan continues to run, an amber light on the case stays lit but nothing happens. I've tried disconnecting everything, hard drive (which is empty but that's another story), DV, DVD-r but no luck. And this is where I ask for your help. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

HI there

I was called in to help a friend try and sort their PC out as they were/are having problems connecting to the internet. I'm able to communicate with the router (which confirms he is connected to the internet) however is unable to reach any websites (comes back with a blank screen - not even an error message) - I thought it may have something to do with Zlob file and smitfraud (located by spybot) and and after searching for HJT, was led here.

Can anyone shed some light on this, or indeed give me any advice on how to proceed - I've run HJT and include the report below.

Thanks

Why should this be happening ?

Im having trouble connecting to the internet. My modem is working fine, my computer says it has full connectivity to the internet and I can see my ip address, but when i try to open internet explorer at the bottom it says "finding site: so and so" and after a while it says its cannot reach server. I called charter to see if they could help me out and they had me do all this things and they checked my modem connection and everything and said everything was fine. When i tried to ping myself it came back with no reply. When i try to renew my ip address it tells me it cannot be completed. The charter people mentioned it might be my network card that is unable to connect to my modem, but i just dont know anymore. I use a windows xp.

Please help. any would be greatly appreciated.

The workstation that can't find the network path to the server is on the same domain as the rest of the machines, its internet connection works perfectly, any ideas what could be wrong?

Workstations run win xp, web server runs win 2003 server.

Good day,

I have never used forums like this, but today's situation forced me.
There is some back story.

Recently I have bought a camera, I am shooting in RAW files which take up a lot of space. I have decided to find a backup solution to back up all my data together with the huge amount of data from the pictures I will take. I found crashplan. Automatically it wanted to backup my C disk (where the windows are) and D disk (where I store all of my university stuff, photos, etc). C drive in my case does not contain any important information to me, just the programs I use and windows. Knowing so, I tick off the C drive when backing up with crashplan and backed up only D. It took me about 10 days to back everything up. (a week ago approx). Since then It was running in the background.

Yesterday, before going to work i was using it, everything was smooth. Using Lightroom to retouch photos, browsing internet, usual stuff...

Today in the morning i switch the computer on. It took usual time to boost - less than 20 seconds. Went to the internet, checked my mobile service provider's website, shut the computer down for next 7 hours.

Opening it up again, trying to boost - it gets stuck on the windows flag screen. Takes more then 5 minutes - I hold the button and turn it off. Try to turn it on again - same thing, gets stuck on during the "flag screen". Researched it a bit, got advised to turn the computer on with a safe mode and restart it. Did that. Still got stuck. Hello and Thank you so much for reading my problem.

I am unable to login to my desktop computer. When the computer is turned on the boot screen shows and the green bar shows that says Microsoft. When it is time for the logon screen where I would choose a user it remains blank and I can see the cursor as well as move it but nothing happens.
I have tried numerous things after searching for the problem online and none have worked. The computer sounds fine and is running but nothing happens. I can't boot using any version of safe mode or normal mode. I can get into the Recovery(I think is what it is called area), where you can choose to repair recover etc. Restore points keep giving me an error saying there is not enough memory but I know already there is and none of the restore points work. Wish I was smarter at fixing this.

Thank you so much for any help!

Sup guys,

The problem I have atm is has decided to just die on me by refusing to load the log in screen. It also must be mentioned this problem started when the power went out.. Other than that it has never happened before over the time I have owned this computer (about 6-8 months), and I'v had several electricity black outs before that..

My Specs are as followed
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium 32Bit
RAM: Kingston 2GB
HD: Seagate 500gb
GFX: Nvidia 8800GT
PowerSupply: Inbuilt, about 500W
PROC: Intel 6600quadcore

The screen before the log in screen says somthing like:
Some data hasn't been saved when you shutdown on the last session would you like to boot on safemode?

When I tried to get into the OS through safe mode, or running safemode and command prompt it made no difference.. I just got the black screen with the cursor loading..

I'v tried ultimatebootcd and some of the HD diagnostic stuff on that. I'v tried defragging it, running antispyware, virus software but nothing. I'v tried some of the system diagnostic stuff on the vista disc.. The system repair thing tells me to unplug any external devices which I have.. (I checked like 5 times lol), system restore can't restore to a previous date either and the full system restore doesn't do anything.

I then resorted to just trying to reinstall the OS and I can't without a product key
The prodcut key they say I received with the disk isn't on the casing, the manual or on the disk and I can't access the OS... Read more

i know have had some instances of vista taking FOREVER [15-20 minutes] to get to the login screen

try letting it sit for a bit and see what happens.

if it still refuses to load then try installing an os on another drive [you should be able to install vista without a cd key, but then again ive only installing from custom vista cds from my old company, so they might have been modified]

then try this, its a bit involved, and might not work on vista, but its the only thing i could think of:

A:How I got rid of the "unable to reach windows updates" rootkit

Hello.First, let me say that we are glad that you have resolved your issue. However, some of the methods you used (particularly the rewriting of the MBR), are not something we recommend that inexperienced users do without expert supervision. There are a number of scenarios in which the use of commands such as 'fixmbr' can have a wide variety of unintended consequences. In some circumstances (for example, an encrypted drive), the machine may no longer be able to boot at all after executing the command. For assistance with removing this and other tricky malware infections, the best route to take is to submit a help request to our Malware Removal Team by following this guide: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic34773.html~Blade

Whenever I start up my computer now it starts up as normal, except that after the windows logo on the black screen with the bar at the bottom dissapears it doesn't go to the login screen. It just stays as a black screen. I can get the computer to start up in all three safe modes, but I can't get the computer to get to the login screen starting normally. I have tried system restoring to yesterday but that didn't work either. I haven't installed anything since yesterday so I don't know what the problem is. Anybody know what the problem might be?

A:Unable to reach login screen on startup

Have you tried doing a System Restore to last week?

When in Safe Mode you can try running check disk to check your hard drives for errors. Go Start>Run and type chkdsk /r. You will need to restart your PC for this to run on boot. Make a note of any errors.

On my PC I use IE6, Opera & Firefox and, in none of them, can I reach affiliate links, that is when a site links to something I may want to purchase.

I also have affiliate links on my own Website at http://www.songland.com/ - if you go there, please click on one of the 3 main ways of entering the site (you can't miss 'em!) and you should see a vertical banner which links to iPowerWeb (excellent Web hosting company, by the way), which is further down in the light blue left-hand links sidebar.

I can't see that banner, in any of my browsers! Yet I can see it on my laptop. Both computers are running the XP Firewall, so it's not that, and it can't be IE6 because I've configured the security identically on both machines.

I seem to have something enabled or disabled somewhere. It could well be in McAfee Antivirus, which I run on the PC only. But, as is usual with antivirus software - always has been! - the interface is ghastly to use, and I can't even find how to configure the darn thing.

Any McAfee experts here? (If it IS that...).

Good Morning;

Overnite, my dsl connection seems to have changed. It hasnt lost any speed, but I'm noticing an inability to complete downloads in about 1/2 the pages I attempt to reach-I should be "timming-out", and the the download goes-on forever and the page NEVER completes itself- not all, but this appears to occurring randomly on approx 1/2 the pages I attempt to download.

I checked normal stuff, firewall, virus scan, etc and nothing looked out of the ordinary, although I noticed some strange sounding names on an Actiontec tool that logs web traffic and I'm seeing locations someone else must be going to because it sure isnt me- also checked "NET STAT" and noticed a phrase I usually dont see......"SYN_SENT".

Last thing to check I suspect is Hijack. Scan appears below. Would someone be good enough to take a look and help me determine whether or not I'm hauling around any baggage?

Many thanks in advance

Windows SBS 2003.

It's a fresh install from R2 disks. The system was put on the network without being patched and updated.

I'm unable to reach AVG and other antivirus websites by name (Can access by ip). Can resolve any other name I've tried (google, yahoo.com amazon and the like.)

AVG pops up that is has worms:
I-worm/Generic.COL
worm/downloadup
worm/generic_c.yh
I have tried to clean it with AVG and Malwarebytes, but they keep coming back.

If you need anything else, let me know!

Gents,
Following a removal of an infection by a brastk trojan infection i am unable to reach any security/av/ websites. All sites are defaulting to 127.0.0.1 on both mozilla 3.0 and IE 7.0 or go to blinkx site .

This problem connecting is also effecting the autoupdate function of sophos.

I have run an a/v scan using sophos with updates up to date as of 10 mins before infection
I have run spybot S&D and have installed webroot firewall.
I have checked and can confirm that host file is default only
I have flushed the cache and winsock

Unfortunately this problem seems to have somehow eluded me.

Fortunately i have a linux pc and so have managed to install and obtain a hijack this log as requested.

Hopefully you can give me some guidance before i have to rebuild

Hi All,

I have a Windows 7 laptop which is slow to load into the Desktop. Booting up takes the 'standard' amount of time, and everything progresses normally until the splash screen which has 'Windows 7 Professional' written at the bottom.

Normally the 'Windows 7 Professional screen' almost instantly brings up the appropriate user account and a password box; however on this particular troubled laptop there is a delay of 30 - 90 seconds before the password entry field is presented.

I have scanned for viruses (there are none), and installed all available Windows updates, however this has not lead to any improvement.

To further test the laptop I have created another user account, without a password, and temporarily disabled the original user account. However there is still a substantial delay between the 'W7 Professional' screen and the desktop loading.

If anybody has any advice on how to overcome this issue it will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Davo

A:Windows taking a long time to reach the user logon prompt / desktop?

Do you have a lot of programs that load at start up?.

Reinstate your original User Name & then post a screen shot of the Start Up tab of System Configuration. This will tell us what gets loaded at Start Up. To find this type, msconfig in the search box after pressing the Start button. When that opens select the Start Up tab.

Also have a look in Start Up in All Programs to see if there are programs set to load there as well.

From first topic: Link is: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/271418/infected-unable-to-use-computer/ ~ OBI know I am infected, but unsure about where I would start. Basically:My computer was completely fine, my Monday evening regular virus/spyware searches turned up 0 results. Tuesday morning I went on the internet, got a few IE popups (even though I use Firefox). Decided to do a Malwarebytes scan and got over 750 infected objects infected. Let the scan finish and was told to restart computer, restarted and the problems started. I completely lost my desktop, no icons and no toolbar; a few more restarts and I managed to get them back but nothing else worked. Every program says I don't have the rights to access it or the computer has the resources to start.I can't access the internet and any scans I can run stop in the middle and give me the 'system resources' error.I'm not using that computer at the moment, since I'm completely unable to use it.Firstly I must ask, is is necessary to save the dds.scr and rootrepeal scanners directly to the desktop, or can they be moved there after being downloaded to another location? I can't access the internet on the infected computer so I will be unable to download them if they MUST be saved to the desktop. I have already managed to run a Win32kDiag scan (attached).Thank you for any help.

I had a folder on my Desktop that just won't delete. I tried deleting it and moving it to another location. It deleted everything within the folder, yet the folder still remained.

I've been having the problem of my Desktop not updating when files/folders are deleted, so I have to manually refresh after a delete to show it gone. Well, the folder decided to stick around. I tried Renaming, Deleting, changing Folder Permissions, Reboot of the Computer.....Nothing seems to help.

If I try to open the folder, I get a "Location is Not Available" along with the "Access Is Denied" error. Going to Properties>Security prompts me that I don't have permission to view or edit permission settings. Under Advanced says the same thing and for Owner it says "Unable to Display Current Owner."

I'm running Windows 7

I have tried looking as some of my questions seem silly most of the time - I looked at the link - Take Ownership Shortcut

I hope that I have done it correctly.

I have trialled it on my desktop and it comes up with a CMD screen and then moves the file. When I extracted the .reg it warned me that it would alter some .tmp files - I read the tutorial and I thought that what I did was fine. I know not to take ownership of Windows 7.

I hope the following information assists and I just want assurance that I did it correctly or if I should have tried another means.

I just recently installed the Windows 8.1 update earlier today. Immediately after the required restart, my computer has not been working properly. As soon as I log on, the desktop flashes back and forth from the desktop picture to the color of the menu background. It flashes back and forth pretty quickly and while this is happeneing I can't perform any functions. When I try clicking on the internet or anything else it is nonresponsive. I tried doing a system restore but after my computer restarted it said the restore was unsuccessful. I tried it again, as well as trying it from a different restore point but neither would work. I then attempted to restart my computer in safe mode but immediately got a pop up saying: "The instruction at 0x35f7649c referenced memory at 0x35f7649c. The memory could not be rewritten. Click OK to terminate the program." After clicking OK, the popup immediately came back and neither clicking OK or pressing the X in the upper right would make it go away and it would just immediatley pop back up and I could not click on anything else while it was up. Also while in safe mode, my desktop shortcuts and desktop picture were again flashing. I'm concerned I have a virus but not exactly sure how I got it or how to fix it. I have Webroot installed and it alerted me to a potential virus a couple days ago but when I tried to fix it, it said something about my product key expiring it and since it wasn't causing my any problems I ignored it. I have removed the trojan and the files it came from with an updated Microsoft security Essentials. Hi ...
I have encountered a somewhat unusual problem with my daughters computer (Dell 3000 XP Home), and am writing to ask for help/advice how to proceed.

We had run a search tool (SUPERAntiSpyware) on the system and found that the computer had many incidences of trojan infection .... many of which were in the register. We allowed the tool to quarantine the infected files. Then when we did the restart and tried to reboot the machine, we got the message saying that the SYSTEM file was missing or corrupt. So we hunted/found the original system XP CD and did the recovery\repair thing. We set up a tmp directory where we saved the corrupt file(s). These were the config SYSTEM, Security, Sam, Default, and Software files. We then copied/replaced those corresponding files from the "XP repair files" back into the config area.

With that done, we then rebooted the machine. The system came up fine and everything seemed to be in tact. Both the system files and the user files were there and accessible. The only problems seemed to be that the regular user sign-on screen was not present, and also, the desktop.... although it had all the system file Icons ..... it did NOT have any of the previous User Icons. So ....although this was not a REALLY big deal, we decided that since our original error message, after having quarantined the infected trojan files, had specified ONLY the Windows\System32\Config\SYSTEM file as being corrupt ..... maybe we should copy the OTHER Co... I don't know exactly when this problem started since both I and the other computer users in my household disagree as to how long it has been happening, so unfortunately we can't pinpoint any changes that may have happened to cause the problem. As far as I know, nothing new has been downloaded recently other than windows updates and such. The only problem I seem to have is that I can not right click on my desktop. I right click and the hour glass comes up and the computer pretty much ceases to function until I reboot it. I have run anti-virus software and Ad-Aware/Spybot and found nothing. Other forums I have read about this issue seem to say that their whole desktop image was removed, or that they couldn't change their desktop image, but I don't have that problem at all.

I have a 2.4 Intel Pentium 4 processor, 512mb of ram, 80GB hard drive with 20GB free.

Any advice/help will be greatly appriciated!

Hello and Welcome to TSF!!

All apologies on the delay.............

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. Also if you have any programs that may prevent system changes (like Spybot's TeaTimer program, Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, and others), make sure you disable them before doing any of the fixes (or accept the changes for the fix we give you when asked by the programs).

Go to My Computer->Tools (or View)->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders (it's Show all files for Windows 98).
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

hi cookiegal,

i am new to this forum and registered because of a thread i read on the forum. (the one on "Extreme help needed Can't click on desktop stuff" posted by vietkanta) I was impressed with the response so thought i try to solve my problem here. my problem is similar to his, the only difference is that my windows xp is legal.

Problem:
when i start up my desktop, the toolbar (on the lower right of my screen) does not pop out any icons. i am using a fujitsu tablet labtop and there will be this "tablet help" window appearing on my desktop (which i didn't disable so that i can refer to it should i need help in future).

When i move my mouse to the toolbar, the hourglass icon shows. I am unable to click on anything on my desktop (the icons.). I can do a ctrl + alt + delete and restart my com, but it will be the same again. Even if i shut down my com, and reboot it, the same problem persists. The only solution i have for it now is to log off my com and to reenter it.

Please advice.

(ps.: i have installed "hijack this" but do not know how to proceed)

I have a user with a machine that is unable to log into the desktop. It logs in, and than immediately logs out.

When I have seen this in the past, it is a corrupt, missing, or infected userinit.exe file. Easily replaced via recovery console.

In this instance, I have renamed the userinit.exe to userinit.jkl, and have expanded the userinit.ex_ from the install media. (XP Home SP2)

I have also ran chkdsk /r

When the system boots, I am not able to boot into safe mode. I get a blue screen with the error to go run check disk.
When I boot into normal mode, I receive the same error of not being able to log in.

I am a little stumped at the moment as to how to get in and run some removal tools.
I'd appreciate if anyone can point me in the right direction. I've begun to wonder if I'm after the wrong file in recovery console.

-Thank you

Alright well, I'm on Windows Vista and something managed to crawl into my computer.

Now, when I start the computer up and log into my account, I've got about 6 seconds to quickly press the start button and open up Mozilla or whatever other programs I need before my taskbar and all of my desktop icons vanish, I can't even right click on the desktop after this.

On top of that, if I do manage to click on My Documents or Computer or Control Panel even, it just closes them automatically.

I've used ClamWin and Nod32 to try and find it and get rid of it, but no such luck. I've even booted the computer up in Safe Mode, deleted at least 1,245 documents that just appeared in My Computer and My Documents.. But nothing works. I'm at a total and complete loss.

The fact that you can't ping his machine indicates you don't actually have connectivity to it. If you go to his place and use Network Tools, you can tinker with firewall settings and ping yourself from outside. When you get the Ping to make it through, you'll probably also be able to do remote desktop. You'll have to enable port forwarding through the firewall for port 3389 to use RDT, however the SP2 firewall does that for you. Also, RDT is ONLY available for XP-Pro, not XP-Home.

If you are using a machine that doesn't have RDT, consider something like UltraVNC to do remote assistance.

Whenever I start up my computer after I log onto my account no icons or task bar shows up, and the only thing I can see is my custom background. This all started to happen after i caught the System Security version 4.51 virus. at first the Virus kept asking me to purchase system security version 4.51 because i was infected with 38 different types of worms, malware, spywear, trojans etc. However, whenever i tried to run my virus scan (I have AVG) it would say the file can't be executed because the file was infected. The same exact thing would happen if I tried to open a number of other files and programs, like control panel. Because of that I couldn't simply delete the virus. I then rebooted my computer and started up in safe mode and deleted the virus. After that i restarted the computer and logged in normally, but i couldn't see any icons or the task bar. so I then repaired and reinstalled the OS, and i still had the exact same problem. I tried to find the "explorer.exe" file and delete it but it wasn't there. I've been using task manager to start new processes. Also, i can't run AVG scans now because it's telling me to reinstall it, but i don't have the product key. So can somebody please help?

You need to get Explorer back so follow these instructions. And to start just open a command promt by starting a new task (cmd).

Have checked services, all ok. Checked RDP settings - Remote connections are allowed. Further investigations ongoing.

Have checked the MDAC version on the PC (2.8) which is correct. Have re-installed RDP but this has made no difference.

Have disabled firewall etc

Any ideas?

A couple of weeks ago, I was using my laptop to play a game. It crashed and had to be restarted, saying that there was a file missing from the windows file. I would restart a few times, wouldn't work. Two days later, restarted and worked ok for 2-3 days, then it stopped. It would show the Toshiba logo, check for a disc, then give me a screen that says "windows was not shut down properly. Do you want to work in safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with prompts, last good know configuation, start normally". No matter what option i clicked, it would try to start, then a blue screen that is on the screen for a split second, would start up again.

I tried to use my recovery disc but it would freeze up as soon as it started and had to be restarted. A few friends suggested that I reformat my laptop, so I borrowed my friend's windows xp disk to reinstall it. Worked fine. I then used my recovery disc. Worked fine until yesterday. My laptop froze so I restarted it. Its going back to the toshiba logo, "windows was not shut down properly" screen, but not reading the windows xp disc in it.

It's a Toshiba a65-s125 laptop.

Hi All.
I hope somebody has a cheap solution for me. I have a Canon Pixma MP530 printer - excellent machine. But it has no network support or slot for a card. Now it has to move 10meters away from the PC, so the USB connection is beyond limits.
Is there a way I can get around this without spending a lot of money?
Any suggestions much appreciated.
Cheers.
Martin.

I decided to change my background tonight and it just isn't working. I have tried right-clicking on pictures>set picture as desktop background> but this is not working anymore.

Right clicking on my desktop and clicking Personalize> Change theme and then setting it from there is not working either. The only thing that does work is setting a solid colour as a background (not too inspiring).

I've googled for a solution and can't seem to fix it.

Anyone know of a fix?

A:Unable to set desktop background all of a sudden

Hello Talisker, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Double check using the tutorial below to see if you may have the Remove background images (where available) box checked by mistaked in the Ease of Access Center.

Remove Background Images (where available)

If you do not, then try Option One in the tutorial below to "allow changing desktop background"....Desktop Background - Allow or Prevent Changing
.... and/or Option Two in the tutorial below to "not specify a desktop background".Desktop Background - Specify and Prevent Change
Hope this helps,

Well, last night I was Playing an online game I regularly play, and I got up to go call a friend for a few minutes. Came back and I had a lovely case of 'Antivirus System Pro' and my brother thought he could take care of it. So in his attempts to do so, he managed to end a process in the task manager that Apparently Allowed the computer to access the internet.

Now, we can't access the internet on that computer - it isn't a modem issue or anything of that sort, seeing as I'm connected on the same network from this laptop.

But yeah, If anyone is able to help me out with this situation please do <3

and Im not the brightest with this computer deal, if you can't tell.

Just auto updated to the latest version of windows 8, and now I can't move my desktop icons, after they were automatically moved out of place after the update.  I have already tried to select and deselect auto arrange icons, but this just moved them
all to the left end of the screen, and didn't solve the problem of me being able to move them.  I have since changed my settings to no longer automatically install pointless updates that do nothing but waste my time and mess with my settings, and would
just like to access this simple feature that I've always had.

I am trying to get an old (about 10 years old) Evesham desktop PC to work. The PC runs Windows XP Home Edition. The PC was used by my daughter when she was about 7 and was password protected. Needless to say, she can't remember the password and this hint is no help.

I have tried doing Ctrl-Alt-Del twice & entering Administrator with no password. This has no effect.

I have tried booting up in Safe Mode, but when I am asked to select Safe Mode by using the arrow keys, the arrow keys don't work. I have checked and number lock is off.

I have tried sticking the original Windows CD in to restore it and the Evesham recovery CD, but nothing is working.

What can I do next?

I use Norton 2005 Anti-Virus, Microsoft Anti-Spyware (beta), and Ad-Aware SE personal. On December 27 I ended up with "Downloader.Delf.aeu", "Downloader.Delf.aeo", & "Trojan-Clicker.Wins32.Delf.eb". I had SpySheriff on machine as well. It seems I have been able to get rid of all viruses and malware. But, I still have one problem. Account # 1 functions just fine. Account # 2 functions okay with one exception: it cannot change the desktop background/desktop theme settings. Also, I am unable to start up Account #2 in safe mode (it doesn't display). Booting in safe mode only gives me the default Administrator and Account # 1 options to start up, no Account #2 is listed. Account #1 allows me to alter desktop setting just fine, but not account #2.Does anyone have any advice on how to fix these problems?(1) Account 2 cannot be displayed in safe mode.(2) Account 2 cannot have desktop theme/background changed.I have run Norton anti-virus, ewido anti-malware, a-squared anti-malware, smitRem, Trojan Remover 6.4.5, Microsoft Anti-Spyware, HiJackThis, and Ad-Aware scans. Hey, first time poster on BC and wondering about this problem.

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit on my ASUS and I'm having this terrible issue:

When I start up the computer, I get to the login screen. It sort of lags here and the sound plays before I get the display.

I log into my computer and there's some more lag with the sound playing after. I wait for a little while and then I move the mouse around. When I click anything, that folder is highlighted and is frozen, I can't make a second action until a good 20 seconds later. If I right click the bottom bar, the options pop up but I can't click any of them, they're frozen too. I can't open any folders.

The only way I've managed to solve this (and been able to post on this forum) is by hitting Fn+F1 (my computer's sleep mode key). I've also run Windows 7 in Bootlogging Mode (by hitting F8 before startup). So after coming back from sleep mode and inside Bootlogging mode my computer functions fine. However, now I'm getting a weird internet problem, I'll be connected then it will show the connection and google.com, other websites, etc. will not work. I disable my connection and the 'LAN' device and renable both and it works again.

I've also run some programs like Malware Bytes and SuperAntiSpyware, I've cleaned out and deleted what they told me to, but I've got "pev.cfxxe" left. Anyway, long story short, I'm afraid of restarting my computer because ... Read more

Hi,
I am a bit frustrated after attempting to get my Live Sync Beta to work properly. I have a notebook and desktop connected to a local network, both are using Windows 7 Pro.
The sync folders show, but when trying to connect to the desktop from the notebook, it does not show the "Connect" link - all it shows is "Personalize | Remove".

On the other hand, I am able to connect to the notebook from the desktop. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Live Sync Beta on both units multiple times.

Any and all suggestions/tips will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

I run Win7 as an administrator but recently I have lost the ability to save files on my desktop or other library locations. I receive the following message:

"You do not have permission to save in this location
Contact the Administrator to obtain permission
Would you like to save in the My Documents folder instead?"

As something happened to my user account? Any feedback would be appreciated.

A:Unable to save files on my desktop

See the suggestion below......it worked for me.

I figured out the solution to this problem in Windows 7. I assume this will work with other OS too.

1. Right-click on the drive that is causing the problem.

2. Left-click on Properties.

3. Click on the Security tab.

4. In the first window click on Administrators (your computer name-PC Administrators).

5. Just below the window click on Edit.

6. Click on Administrators (your computer name-PC Administrators) again.

7. Here's the key to making it work. If Apply is grayed-out, check a box in the Deny column. It will then bring up Apply.

8. Check a box in the Allow column. It should check all of the boxes except the last one and uncheck all of the boxes in the Deny column.

9. Click Apply. It should run a scan of the files in the drive. When the scan is finished, click Ok. The first box should still be open.

10. In the first window, click on Users (your computer name-PC\Users) and repeat steps 5-9, of course clicking on Users (your computer name-PC\Users)
instead of Administrators (your computer name-PC Administrators).

NOTE: You may not have to click in the Deny column after the first scan is completed for step 10 as indicated in step 7.

Tried sticking to Aero themes

? THIS IS WHAT I DO
1. Select 2 wallpapers to alternate (both are my screen size [1366 x 768])
2. Make sure that it says slideshow (note that the "my theme" pic has a black background, don't know why)
3. Wait for my background to alternate (never happens)
4. Click 'next background' to manually alternate (still won't change)]

A:Unable to create desktop slideshow

Hello Steimpunk, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if running a sfc /scannow command may be able to help if it's a corrupted system file is the cause.

If not, and it hasn't been to long ago, you might consider doing a system restore using a restore point dated before having this issue after installing the programs to hopefully fix it.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I have been unable to connect to the internet since Sunday. Computer was working fine and all of a sudden when I turned on the computer I received the following error:
6w1o.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. I have already tried several things including, reseting the winsock catalog, replacing the tcpip.sys file, disconnecting my router and reconnecting, rebooting. I printed out the WinSock Diagnostic report and received could not perform loopback communication on TCP/IP, UDP/IP, RSVP UDP and RSVP TCP. Also an error of a connectivity problem exists w ith an installed LSP. I have researched the forum for several days now to try and f ix so I'm sure I have try other things that I haven't mentioned. When I type IPCONFIG /ALL in the command prompt I get the following message: An internal error occurred: The request is not supported. Please contact Microsoft Product Support for further help. Additional information: Unable to query host name. Also, when I click on the status for the local area connection for the computer the Status reads connected. Under Support tab everything is blank! I've tried to repair with no luck. My operating system is Windows XP SP2 with AMD Athlon processor 256 MB. I have a D-Lin DI-524 wireless G Router. My ISP is At&T. Also, my Laptop has no problems getting on the internet. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

I recently decided to install cabal on my laptop again. I used internet download manager to install it. However, when I run the installer, explorer.exe becomes unresponsive and I have to kill it. Right clicking it gives the same result. I am unable to check the size of it. I've try defragmentation and it doesn't work as well. My computer doesn't allow system restore so I cannot restore it to a previous point.

I've done some googling and I found the command prompt method which asks u to do cd desktop. I've tried it but when I do it, I get this result.
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Users\NP Student>cd desktop

C:\Users\NP Student\Desktop>del 120306_CabalSEA_FullClient.exe
C:\Users\NP Student\Desktop\120306_CabalSEA_FullClient.exe
Access is denied.

Anyone can help me with this?

Sorry for the vague title but frankly i'm at a bit of a loss even simply describing the issue.

Basically, I'm unable to save to desktop with some programs and when i tried to build a c++ console application and then run it through visual studio, it gave me an "Access is denied" error. I've also noticed that shortcuts aren't being created.

For example, FL studio is giving me this:

and i'm not sure if relevant but i'm not even able to browse to C:\ in the save prompt.

I've tried messing with permissions and taking ownership and anything else i was able to find but so far nothing has helped.

Well that might not be true, FL studio saving did work at one point, for just a moment. I'm not at all sure what triggered it though, or what caused it to stop working.

I've had this problem for quite a while now and i'd be so incredibly grateful if i could finally find a solution.

Did you try running as administrator?

try adding everyone full control to your desktop, see if it will work - don't keep it like this though

Hello Guys,

I am new to this forum. My computer suddenly started giving me problems. Any executable I try to start such as Windows Explorer or Word or Excel, I get this same error "Windows cannot access specified drive, path or file. YOu may not have the appropriate permissions to access the items". This is wierd. I am the admin on my machine. I cannot also access the Control Panel User Accounts. I can execute commands such as regedit, msconfig or even start up my command window. I wanted to use the System Recovery disk provided along with my computer, but it wont start up and I am assuming it is because of the problem starting up exe's and bat files.

So please give me suggestions on what to do and if I have to reformat my hard drive and reinstall the OS, I would appreciate your help in giving step by step instructions on how to do it.

Thanks
Chetty

I have a new problem. I am running Windows XP home edition on an HP 5280 laptop with 1.5 meg of memory. I had installed a program called "Registry Cleaner 4.0" , and the icons were suddenly locked into their positions; I could not move the icons, and cannot insert a desktop icon into a desktop folder. The icons will launch their respective programs, and when right-clicked, the menu appears as it normally does. Thinking that the problem was with the new program, I then uninstalled it. The uninstall process appeared to proceed normally. However, after uninstalling, the icons remain "frozen", are unable to be moved, do respond to a right-click, open their respective programs, but cannot be moved with the cursor. Anybody got any ideas as to what to do? Thank you.

Anytime I try to change the desktop background, i get a message that says "This image can't be set as wallpaper, an internal error has occurred." I can't change the themes either or anything, my background is just black. Another thread stated that this was due to a transcoded .jpg, but I can not find any file such as that anywhere in my computer. And suggestions or ideas?
