Windows screen flashes, random grey screen & random black screen

Q: Windows screen flashes, random grey screen & random black screen

This is driving me crazy.

Right after I boot my laptop, the screen flashes randomly.

Also something is stealing focus from what I am working on to something else.

Then it likes to suddenly go to a grey screen. I have to manually reboot.

If that is not enough, it like to just reboot.

Scanned with my AVG and Kaspersky, nothing found. Tried TrendMicro House Call, nothing. Dr. Web, nothing.

All drivers are up to date.

I have run it in the safe mode for about an hour with no problems. No new software installed recently. I went to restore and it was only dated from the previous day, so no help there.

I would prefer not to Nuke and pave, but if that what I need to do, I can.

Any thoughts, theories, explosives you can recommend for this?

I await with enlarging piles of hair as I pull it out.
Roger

I have a Gateway MD2614U laptop OS Win7 Home 32bit. Now my 15" flat screen tv can also serve as a computer monitor. When I am doing ham radio digital transmissions I have 2 primary prog's open and running at the same time. I setup in Win7 for the flat screen tv to be an extended monitor so one prog is on the flat screen tv and the other is on the laptop screen.
Everything was fine. Then everything went hay wire. At random times prog's started changing colors, blinking on and off on both screens, then the hole desktop started in doing it on both screens. Then everything goes black and a blue box pops up saying "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage" There is a lot more writing on the blue screen. That's just the 1st top line. Then the laptop shuts down and reboots. This has happened many times since I plugged in the tv as a 2nd monitor. With the monitor cable to the tv unplugged from the laptop there hasn't been anymore of that random stuff. And there wasn't anything like this before I plugged in the tv as a monitor. What gives here?

Hello, I have been having this problem for a while now, and any help would be appreaciated.
During everyday activities, my screen will go grey and totally unresponsive. I would need to do a hard restart in order to get it working again. Everyday activities include web browsing and gaming. I really do not know why this happens.
Upon a restart, there is no error reporting dialogs and no Windows didn't shutdown properly.
It doesn't happen frequently, only once in a while, and I don't know what causes it.
I am not overclocked at all. This happened on my previous motherboard as well as this one. I think it may have to do with my CPU heat, is there any way to check while I'm in a game?

I recently did a factory restore on my laptop since it was giving me really bad problems before(BSOD on boot, unable to start in safe mode, etc). I assumed that it was caused by a bad video driver installation. Once I did my factory restore, this problem was solved, but it seems like a new one arose.

In the first few days the laptop was working fine, but I recently realised that if I unplug my AC Adapter, my laptop would work for awhile but will eventually die. The screen would just go black, then I would see weird colors and then it would go black again and I would be forced to hold the power button and restart. The funny thing is, this never happens when I have it plugged in.

I then realised that it happened when I plugged it out and moved it around, so I assumed it had something to do with the wiring inside my laptop. But it seems that isn't the case since even if I move it around while it's plugged in, it doesn't happen. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with my power supply at this point, but I'm not really sure.

If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it!

EDIT: It just happened to me as I tried to access my task manager. I did CTLR+ALT+DEL and my screen went black, and my laptop simply restarted itself.

A:Laptop screen failure; random colors followed by black screen

EDIT: It seems it has gotten way worse. It happened while it was plugged in, and not only that, but when I tried to turn on my laptop again, the screen remained black and I heard these beeping noises. (6 beeps in succession, over and over) Sometimes I turned it on and it didn't even beep. I managed to actually get my laptop to boot, but I'm afraid it will happen again.

Hi all,

I have been having this issue for a while. I have an ASUS UL20A-A1 laptop that came with a 1.3GHz Core2Duo, 2GB RAM, and Intel GMA4500MHD with Win7 64-bit. A while ago I bought a 2GB RAM upgrade to bring my laptop to a total of 4GB. When I bought the first RAM upgrade, I was pretty sure that it was the right type, but I was wrong, the first time I bought it. The first time I bought it, I bought 2GB DDR2 PC2-6400S-13-ZZ, when the laptop came with 2GB DDR2 PC2-6400S-12 RAM. Putting these two types together caused my system to randomly reboot, and then the screen would flash colored lines that would fill the whole screen and make the laptop unusable until I manually rebooted it. So, I thought, okay, the issue was caused by the two different types of memory put together, that makes sense. So, I went back to 2GB until my second 2GB memory upgrade came. While I only had 2GB, I never experienced any issues at all. Yesterday, my new 2GB RAM came. I made sure that this was the right type, and it was the exact same type, and I put the new memory in yesterday. From yesterday afternoon until now, everything was working fine, it was faster, stable, and no screen flashes. But, just a couple of minutes ago, I saw a blank screen, then the BIOS loading screen, and then realized that the system had rebooted. I logged into Windows, and about 5 minutes later, the entire screen was filled with flashing colored lines, and there was nothing I could do but force the computer of... Read more

Hello everyone. I'm very sorry for just being a new member and allready posting.
I felt like i needed to post this straight away as i've seen the technichal support given by the community
and as much i can be honest, this is the top website i found with the most fixes.
to anyone that will be interested in helping me, I appreciate it deeply - thank you very much.

Recently i left my computer to update a game ( world of warcraft ) overnight.
When i woke up I was confused why it was back to the login screen. ( im guessing it must have reseted )
So i logged in, couple of minutes later the wallpaper changed into something 'Warning your computer has been infected everything you do is logged'
so bla bla. So i ran a couple of AVG scans manage to find the thing it was something called b.exe ( been deleted ). now my wallpaper problem is fixed.
HOWEVER sometimes when i turn on the pc it's just a plain black screen with a curser in the middle a couple of clicks it will freeze ( it works after a couple of hard reboots).
Everytime i search something on google ( using firefox ) and click on the link it brings up a new tab with 'jump' title.
the computer also randomly freezes at some point.

This is my log.

Hi all,

I have Win7 Ultimate x64 installed on an brand new HP Pavilion s5-1205z Slimline desktop.

When I am reading an email or document the screen will just suddenly flash to a black screen for a second. Sometimes it does this several times in a row, and other times just once or twice. It is random and does not matter what program I am in, if I am browsing, playing a video on-line, or typing. I have installed Java and done as much troubleshooting as I can and can't find anything that relates to that kind of behavior at all in the Help Files or FAQ's.

Any suggestions of where I might look to see if I need to check or uncheck something, and what, would be very much appreciated.

A:PC screen suddenly flashes to a black screen and back

Combining the info that you posted here with the info in this thread - I gotta wonder if someone is able to remote into your computer. If you are not too far along in setting up your computer, you might want to consider a clean install without all of the bloatware.

Unless you have a specific need for Java - uninstall it. If you need it, then it might be worth the security risk of having it installed. If you don't need it - then why risk having it installed?

Hey,

I just built a new computer and I'm fairly certain all the components are compatible with each other, but I've never built a computer before.

All the components are brand new and anyway I built it, the first time I booted it; it ran my windows disc but it was scratched up so I went to clean it. Upon using the computer again, it kept saying 'BootMgr is missing, press ctrl-alt-delete to restart' - now this didn't change upon using or not using my windows disc and I could not enter bios screen.

I'm not using a usb keyboard - using one of those ones with the purple adapter.

Anyway I thought I may have plugged the sata cables into the hdd and optical drivers wrongly and have changed them about multiple times as well as removing the CMOS battery and tried clear the CMOS by touching the two pins.

All I get now is my screen flashes a quick image of the initial load screen and then straight to a black screen, everything in my PC seems to be running fine. Plus I've tried it with and without my graphics card and I get same issue.

What can I do?

Thanks,
BC

A:New build - flashes load screen then black screen

Hi BC welcome to Techspot,

Firstly the "purple adapter" is a PS2 conenction.

There are many reasons as to why this error may occur and how to to sovle this issues but it sounds like you have tried to start a windows installaiton and becasue the disc was scratched it hasn't completed the it hence it comes up with the error "BootMgr mssing". The best solution here I think would be for you to get another Windows disc and try re-installing windows.

to get into the BIOS remove the windows disc from your PC and restart. when the PC is laoding up hit the F2 key and this should allow you to load the BIOS.
I wrote this thread if thsi is any help

hope this helps

Hi guys! I am having a problem with my new pc.
Spec's are:
MOBO: GA-970A-DS3P
CPU: AMD FX 6300
GPU: ASUS R7 260X OC EDITION 1 Gb DDR5
RAM:2x MUSHKIN 992029 DIMM 2GB DDR3-1600 ESSENTIALS SERIES
PSU:Inter Tech 550W

The problem is that when pc is running and uses much of its RAM, for example during a game or during multitasking, the screen will turn to black and thats it, there's nothing I can do after that other than restart.
It happened many time during alt+tab when I was playing a game, and screen went black.
It also happened when I opened a program (and permition message should pop up) and then black again.
I thought that it could be due to low RAM, I dont know I just make an assumption.
I also copied the events around the time when the problem occured.
Thanks you in advance!!

I played Dead Island for about and hour or so the other day with no problem, I decided to play it again today.
After about 40mins of playing, the screen just went grey (There was some lines but I cant remember if they were horizontal or vertical). I could still hear some sounds, but I couldn't do anything besides restart my computer by hitting the button.
I just though it was a random bug from the game considering the bugged release of the game, so I just went and watched a movie. I came back and started it up again. After about 10 mins, my screen just went blank and said "no signal". Like with the first time, I could hear sounds, but the only thing I could do was restart.
I also played some TF2 and minecraft with no problem.

Is this hardware related? or just the game?

Edit: I also played a game of League of Legends, and that was fine aswell.

Sometimes I can run for up to around 6 hours without any of these happening, but when it does happen there are sure to be more to follow. Computer restarts offer a temporary fix. Audio always continues to play uninterrupted throughout any of these (Excluding BSOD, of course.)

Ranked in order of frequency (Most common at top):
-Random screen freeze (Usually while browsing the internet, never seems to happen in games.) When it unfreezes my cursor takes the shape of what it should when I hover over something, but it won't change back (Ex. Changes to the I symbol when it goes over the address bar, but keeps the shape no matter where I put the cursor.)
-Screen goes black and the "DVI NO SIGNAL" message appears on the screen, computer sounds to be running normally. It usually returns to normal after a few minutes, when I have the patience to wait. This happened once while I was away from the computer, so it wasn't triggered by an action of mine.
-Screen goes completely black, no messages, and it restarts. OR I get a BSOD. I was thinking that maybe the black screen is actually a BSOD that fails to show me the actual blue screen. They both create dump files.

In addition to these things, the Windows Update "Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932)" Has been failing to install since about 2 months before the crashing started. The error code is 80073712. All other updates install successfully, I was considering the possibility that these two proble... Read more

Hello. I have a question about Windows 7 installation. I am using usb booting from pendrive. Sometimes when i am booting from usb windows 7 , on 1 screen when you choose language there is a freez , no keyboard working and no mouse. I must use hard reset. Is this something to worry about?
I am using stock system, 4790k, 16gb DDR 1600mhz, Saberooth Z97 Mark 2. But no errors in memtest86.
I want to be sure that all is ok with memory. When I get to the language selection the mouse and keyboard stop working and no cursor appears, they both work in bios so I don't know what the issue is. Then i must use hard reset. Its totally random but always work after second boot and then windows load with mouse cursor and keyboard works.

Hello everyone!

I have come to this site as a guest many times in the past, and usually I find the solution to my problems by searching. However, this time I cannot find anything on my issue.

I just built a new pc a couple of weeks ago. It runs stable, I had no lockups, the hardware monitor always reports a good status, the temperature is cool.

I turn it off at night, and when I turned it on again in the morning three days ago, it wouldn't post, basically locked up with a flashing screen that showed grey lines, bars, boxes, some letters and characters. I turned it off, turned it back on, it booted fine. Yesterday morning I had no problems at all. This morning it did the same thing. Again, I turned it off, turned it back on, same flashing screen. The 3rd time the screen did the same thing but it actually started going to Windows. Upon turning it back on for the 4th time, it came up fine. I was wanting to take a picture of the screen, but now it won't do it anymore.

My question, is it more likely to be a bad video card or a bad cpu? All parts are new, and I have 3 more days of exchange period on the video card. Unfortunately I don't have any replacement parts to test it with. I ran PCDR and PC Certify, both didn't come up with any errors. I have already reseated video card and ram.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions!
Thank you in advance.

The only way to get back on is to power it off and restart it. I've lost quite a bit of work so any help is appreciated.

A:Random Black Screen

Is there anything significant being logged at the time in either the system or the application event log (run EVENTVWR)?

Are there any DMP files in \Windows\Minidump? If so, can you please move them to another location on your system, zip them up, and upload here.

If the answer to both questions above is "no", then there's not a lot to go on. As a suggestion, make sure your BIOS and video, NIC, chipset... drivers are all up-to-date. If the problem is caused by software issues, it'll be either the BIOS or a buggy driver. Updates may fix the issue.

Start by trying another monitor. If it still happens, then try a different video card. Most likely it's one of those two. Maybe your video card is overheating... Try lowering your refresh rate as well. To do that, right click on the desktop, go to properties, then settings..then advanced, then monitor. try that for now.

Hey guys,

In short, my computer screen will black out when ever I do go full screen with any application including youtube and recently when uploading photos from my camera to Photoshop elements.

This is the history of the problem:
Gateway FX6800-01e

ATI Radeon 4950 Graphics card
22" HD2201 Gateway Smart Screen
Vista months of the problem, switch to Windows 7, problem still present

The problem first presented itself (i believe, has been months now) when I updated the graphics card. Once I had updated, the screen cut out and I had to manually cold shut down the machine. I restarted the computer and it wouldn't even make it past the password. I restarted in safe mode, disabled the gfx driver, and restarted. This brought my computer back to life but was only using the basic display driver. I preformed a rollback on the driver to no avail. Same issues. Did a system restore, no help. Did a system restore to the earliest date saved, no help. I uninstalled everything ATI related and only installed the driver, no help. However, uninstalled that driver and installed a previous version, i could then get past the password screen, but no full screen. I then installed the Catilyst Control Center and but it would not load due to a control software in Vista. I disabled that and it still wouldn't work. A:Random Black Screen on New PC

Give us some more details on the issue and what you have tried to resolve it.

I would start with checking temps of the machine from boot until issues to see if you can rule that out
You could run furmark or similar to stress test the gfx and/or uninstall-reinstall gfx drivers or roll back to an older driver although if the machine was black screening during installation ie outside of windows environment then it wont be drivers and is more likely to be a hardware issue

Check event viewer/windows logs for any repeat errors or entries leading up to problem
May be worth manually getting a msinfo32 file from your machine and uploading to us to have a look we may be able to get some info from this
Start>msinfo32>enter then save and upload

Try booting into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when first starting the computer. See if there's any change. If you aren't having the problem in Safe Mode, try updating your nVidia drivers. They constantly have new drivers available.

You could also try lowering your graphics acceleration. Right click on your desktop, go to Properties>>Settings>>Advanced>>Troubleshoot.

Hello Techspot community!

I recently reinstalled Windows Vista on my Dell Inspiron 1721 Notebook. During the installation, I completely cleared the C Drive and kept the recovery drive and went on with normal reinstallation.

After this, I installed World of Warcraft including the new expansion Wrath of the Lich King.

Now, my problem is that when I am playing World of Warcraft, my computer monitor randomly goes black. It wont allow me to hit the power button to put it into sleep mode. It only allows me to hold the power button in and completely shut off and reboot the computer.

I am not sure at all what the problem is. To my knowing, I am completely up to date on all of my drivers and such, but I am just not sure what is causing the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

So far every once and a while when I boot my PC. I get a black screen. From there I can't do anything and must restart manually. So far this has happened twice. After restarting Windows XP says that the PC couldn't boot and to choose from a list of options such as Safe Mode or Start Normally. I would like to add my PC has only been overclocked once. And currently it is standard clock speeds.

I would like to include my specs so:

Windows XP Pro. Service Pack 2
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ Brisbane 1.9GHz Dual Core CPU
Biostar TForce 550 SE ATX Motherboard
Corsair Value Select 1GB (512MB x2) DDR2-667 RAM
eVGA e-GeForce 7900 GS KO 256MB Video Card
Maxtor Diamondmax 200GB PATA-133 HDD
Emprex (Sony) DVD-RW 18X Drive
Lite-on DVD-RW 16X Drive
SYBA PATA-133 PCI Controller Card (Controls DVD-RW Drives)
Raidmax RX-630A Volcano 630W Power Supply
Thermaltake 80mm Blue LED Fans x4
Generic 80mm Red LED Fan x1

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I am in the process of degrading my video drivers to 93.71 from 94.24

A:Random Black Screen

just a note to u the video drivers 93.71 are good, if u had a good download and should not be a problem. I have never used the 94.24 so I am not going to speak for them but have never downloaded them although I have a 7800gs that I have an older computer with the 97.92 drivers on and it works well. although I do not know how much gameing she does.

Probably is from you having to shut the power off to restart it.

Lets get a look at the temps and voltages under load give us a screen shot of the Hardware Monitor window.

D/L and run Hardware Monitor do something intense like a virus scan or gaming for a bit, Alt+Tab back to HWM expand all the trees and use the Win7 snipping tool to grab a screen shot of the HWM window, post the screen shot using the paperclip button in the advanced message box(Go Advanced button).

Heyy..

So yesterday due to a sudden power outage (happens allot here), my windows started behaving erratically.

First when the power came on my windows 7 ultimate 64 bit, was stuck on windows logo. i waited for about 20 mins and it was still stuck. The HDD read activity light on my casing was active the whole time and it was red.
i restated the system and the same thing happened. I tried the safe mode and it didn't boot..It was stuck at classsys.pnp with solid red light of HDD..i restarted my system again.

After about 10 restarts the system finally booted up after ..i thought the problem had been solved but after 10 or so mins a damn BSOD appeared..i restated the system and the same thing..stuck at the logo with constant read activity on HDD..
Today also..the same things..stuck on logo..restart again..after 3 tries windows starts..then BSOD..then again stuck on logo..Its has become an unpredictable cycle of what the system will do next..

The exact same thing had happened before about 3 weeks back, and i formatted my HDD and reinstalled the windows new..Now i dont know what to do..Is it a software problem or my hardware like motherboard, RAM or HDD is failing..plzzz help urgently..

PS..i have attached my crash dump and other files necessary fro evaluation.

Hello everyone,

I have been experiencing random crashes on my newly built pc, and so far, every atempt I've made at trying to find a solution have failed.
At first, it seems to be quite random, but some program seem to make it crash every time I use them.

The symptoms are as follows:
-black screen (though sometimes it shows colored stripes instead of total black)
-hdd still active for 5-10 seconds, then no activity light whatsoever
-sound loops
-even num lock is unresponsive
-a signal is still sent through the graphics card, as the TV does not show the usual "No input signal" when there's..well, no input.
-no reboot, I have to manually reset the PC
-no dump files

My setup is:
-MSI P67A-C45 B3
-i5 2500k (not overclocked)
-2x2Gb G.Skill Ripjaws X 12800 cl9 (not overclocked, with and without XMP profile activated, but I had to set the right timings in bios as it showed 9,10,10,29 instead of 9,9,9,24)
-Sapphire HD 6850 (not overclocked)
-Antec HCG 520W
-WD Caviar Blue 1TB
-image is sent to a LG 32LH3000 LCD TV via HDMI

I've tried everything, from reinstalling graphics drivers (old, new, preview 11.4...), to reinstalling windows 7 (I'm on the 64 bits version).
It does not seem to be a hardware failure since every test or burn I make is succesful, and does not cause any problem.
Graphics card does not go over 70?C with Furmark, and handles every game perfectly.
CPU does not go over 75?C under Primer 95.

Hi!

This is my first post, I apologise if I make any mistakes.

I have been experiencing random black screens occurring. This can happen any time from right after I press the power-on button, before/after POST, before/after windows loading screen, sometimes even shortly after I have successfully logged into my windows account. My current solution to this is to continuously restart the computer till the black screen does not appear.

Before this problem started, sometimes my computer would black out if too many programs were running. Sometimes it would recover, sometimes I would have to restart the computer.

I have tried to plug in and out the gfx card, power connections, however the problem is not resolved. Could I ask where is the source of the problem, and what method should be used in fixing it? Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Here are some details:
This computer was self-assembled.
Windows XP Version 2002, SP3
AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3200+ 2.01GHZ

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Try using Safe Mode to run the computer and see whether the problem persists.

To boot in to Safe Mode, do the following:
Press the ON button and start tapping the F8 key ... and keep tapping ... until you are presented with the "Windows Advanced Options Menu". Use your UP/DOWN arrows to select "Safe Mode" and press the Enter key.

There will be no internet access in Safe Mode.

Please post back with the result, and that may give someone a better idea of what might be happening.
----------------
When you say "black screen" .... does that mean that the computer continues to run normally ... even though the screen display has blacked out? Does your keyboard still work? Do you see any evidence that the mouse may still be working? Does the computer slow/freeze at any time with or without the screen blacking out?
------------
The only other thing that comes to mind immediately .... replace the PSU (power supply unit) with a reliable one ... and see whether the problem persists.

Hey guys,

This just happened a few hours ago, I was playing a game when suddenly the screen froze and poped up a small bsod then black screen. Btw this is a laptop running Win 7 Ultimate. I force shut down my laptop and tried turning it on again, the screen stayed black but the power, wifi and caps lock keys have lights. So I thought, its still booting up.

Next thing I did was connect the laptop to an external monitor via vga. Instantly the diaplay appeared altho, after the BIOS boot up, it gave me the chance to select safe mode options and normal boot. I tried booting it normally but it gave me the bsod error and this is what it says:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed.

*standard bsod message here*

Technical information:

STOP: 0x00000116

atikmpag.sys - Address goes here

*standard bsod message/dump message*"

Ok, and then after that I tried installing the ati drivers while on safe boot and it failed.

I havent tried reinstalling a new copy of windows or reformatting, so any suggestions what might have caused this and how can I solve it? I do feel that its not a hardware issue since it can run on safe boot fine with the external monitor.

I purchased a new XPS 15 9550 with the upgraded graphics and it was delivered yesterday. I love the machine but from time to time the machine will flash followed by a black screen. This happens both on and off the doc (Dell dock type c).
I have been updating drivers and bios and it appears it is happening more often. I am not doing any gaming or anything that graphics intensive. Are there any tricks for this?
One thing I noticed is that even after updating the BIOS, the dell system detection still says the bios needs updating. Not sure if that matters or not.

Hi all,

I have DIYed a PC 2 weeks ago for gaming/internet purpose with the following config:
- ASRock Z77 Pro4-M MB
- Intel i3 2120 3.3G CPU
- Team Elite DDR3 1600 1x4G Ram
- WD Caviar Blue 500GB HD
- Sapphire HD7770 Vapor-X OC 1G GDDR
- FSP 500W Aurum Gold 500 PSU

However, it got randomly freeze and black screen in windows in different scenario:
- Freeze at Screen Saver
- Freeze after away for a few mins
- Freeze during Skype, Gameplay with repeat sound playing during freeze
- Black screen during Shutdown -> Windows Update Installing
Basically it can freeze any time after starting up without special observable pattern. One thing is that it usually (30-50%) freeze during the first 10 minutes after starting up windows. However, sometimes it can work for a few hours normally after the 10-minutes time.

What I've done so far (but the problem still persist):
- WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic v5.19 Quick Test/Extended Test -> No Error Found
- Memtest86+ overnight for 12 passes -> No Error or Hang
- Stress/Stability Test in OCCT/FurMark/Prime95/Aida64 -> Temperate of CPU/GPU up to ~60C, seems normal and no freeze during test
- Power Supply Test in OCCT -> The voltage seems stable
- Update BIOS to the latest 1.20 version
- Installed Windows XP SP3 32-bit -> Same problem
- Adjust the Ram Voltage from Auto (1.585) to 1.5V
- The +3.3/+5/+12 voltage in BIOS seems normal (within 5% range)

In the last few weeks I've had random Black Screens Of Death. It can happen (most of the time) while playing a game, but it has happened while the PC was idle (rare) and just now it happened as I was attempting to refresh the Win 7 performance index.

Most of the time, the screen goes black (complete video signal loss) and I have to hard reset. On the rare occasion it will go black, then after a while crash and dump. The last minidump file I got is included here. It seems fairly obvious that the issue is video related but I can't tell if it's the ATI drivers or a 3rd party driver causing havok with them.

I've been trying, with zero success, to get some Driver Verifier output. Once I set Driver Verifier to check the 3rd party drivers it bluescreens during the Windows 7 splash screen and then reboots and loops. What I did do was hit F8 during one of the loops and stopped it from rebooting on error so I could capture the detail of the bluescreen. It's as follows:
Stop 0x0000001E (0xFFFFFFFFC0000005, 0xFFFFF80003AD4D56, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000).

I can't tell if this issue is related to my black screen issue.

I think the issue is driver related but can't prove it at this point and I'm having difficulty interpreting the addresses above.

I've run memtest for a couple of hours and no errors came up.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Please find the required files attached here.

A:Random Black Screen Of Death

Hello,

Black screens are normally caused by the Graphics Driver failing. I would make sure that you have the latest ATI drivers.

How long has this been happening? If you have done a recent driver update for the Graphics Card then I would roll back the driver and see if the problem persists.

hi everyone, I am new and hoping you guys could help me out.
I have a Toshiba notebook with a radeon hd 2600. The problem is that my computerscreen turns black randomly. Not real black, more like anthrazit, the music plays on so i know its just the screen. This happen more then twice a day and is really frustrating. I think its a virus because last time when it turned black i heard the beeping sound of antivir when it repots a security attack. But it could also be something else, maybe vista related. I had this problem before i had to turn in the computer to the seller he. Herepaired it and sait it was the videocard, and he put in a new one. but one week it happened again. I need my pc for studies so i could not afford wait another to weeks for it back, and i cant imagine that it was the video card again. One more thing, it seems to happens more often when i am watching a movie in fullscreen wich is not to say it would not happen when i am just browsing.

If anyone knows this problem, i very much apreciated any advice.

Hey all.

So for a good while now, I've had this problem with my laptop where it'll do the usual Blue Screen stuff, just without the actual Blue Screen (the screen goes completely black); this usually happens just after a file from the Internet has finished downloading, though it has also happened while the laptop is idling.

As someone who really dislikes asking for help, I attempted to analyse the dumps myself and find people with similar problems, though I could never come to a conclusion as to what's wrong. So here I am, asking you guys.

The steps in the BSoD posting guide produced a .zip file with the two dumps from the minidump folder, though it excluded the dump in the Windows folder; would it be beneficial to post that one up too?

I've had this before but can't remember what I did to stop it
It Is exactly like you pull the dvi/hdmi lead out of monitor/gpu everything still working i.e. if playing video on youtube it carries on playing just no picture.
I think it was something to do with Intel's built in gpu, but I have disabled it everywhere I can think of bios, device manager etc.
Can anyone through some light on this please as it's startingto annoy me now

My rig specs in sig.

A:Random black screen, rig stays on !!

When does this occur? At random? Only when videos/games are playing? Also, what is the exact behavior? Is the monitor giving off behavior as if it has lost its video source, like an error saying the source was lost or it is switching through different connections to find one? Can you tell if your system is locked up, or if it's still accepting your input? The best way to determine thsi is to have the display lost when playing a video, then pressing a key to stop/start playback.

If the monitor is acting like it's not connected to the PC, then it can be a bad video port on your card, a bad/loose video cable, or the monitor itself has a bad port or is just plain bad. You will want to start with potential physical suspects before dabbling with software. Have you tried actually running the video through your onboard video (make sure to enable it and stuff of course) instead of your graphics card and see if that worked?

Hi, Heres my dilemma, I have a Acer 5050 that chooses to boot to black screen, (video fine on external monitor, but in low resolution). I updated xp, updated ATI driver to new one, set resolution to medium, rebooted and video comes back on notebook fine. Then I came back 2 hrs later and black screen again, I plug in external monitor again and its there, low res again. I set video to factory default settings in ATI control panel and rebooted, video fine again! Seems like if I leave it for an hour or two it goes back to black screen. Could this be a battery issue? I see the battery is very weak. Acer has a management program on it to control video, etc. I don't know if that could be suspect too.

Hi, it may be a hardware problem or a system driver, as less drivers load in safe mode.
Try System Restore in safe mode.
Start - Search - Type.
cmd
Right click cmd.exe - run as administrator.
Type
rstrui.exe
Then press Enter.
Choose a date prior to your problem.

I searched and found a thread like this in the Archives, and I have a similar problem. My brand new computer running WinXP Pro randomly goes into sleep mode when im using it, (playing planetside, mostly). I saw it was suggested to disable something in the bios, and I have no idea what that is. FYI I am not too computer-advanced, so a detailed description as possible would be nice. I am running on:

My computer is about a year old and just recently it has been completely shutting down while i am playing CSGO. Now it crashes if i'm watching someone play on Twitch, if i'm playing League of Legends, SC2, and yesterday crashed while i was playing bloons td battle. I tried doing a full scan for a virus and it crashed half way through that too.

I managed to do a Windows Memory Diagnostic and no errors came back so it isn't my ram. I don't think my comp is overheating either because when i check the temp its always near 50 Celsius and i have five fans including two 230mm fans. If someone could please try and help figure out why my computer is crashing i would be so happy.

What's near 50?C? There is more than one temperature to consider, have you checked your GPU temps? The 6670 is an entry level card so I wouldn't be surprised if that was struggling like hell.

Hey everyone. I recently built my first custom PC. Here is a link to the build on PCPartPicker:
AMD FX-6300, Sapphire Radeon R9 270, Corsair 300R - Ordered build updated - ajthemacboy's Saved Part List - PCPartPicker

Since then I have had random black screen issues. At one point I reinstalled the OS, and they still occur. You may notice the R9 270 needs a 450W power supply at the least.

At first look you would think this is the problem, but it's not. Before the R9 270 I had an EVGA 750 Ti, which only uses like 60 watts of power or something, as well as a CM430W power supply, and the black screen issues still occurred.

First I returned the power supply for a CS450M, black screen still occurred. Then I returned the 750Ti for an r9 270, and the issue still occurs.

If it's not the graphics card, power supply, or OS, what should I do?

The dump file is attached. It blames NTOSKRNL.EXE, but I have no clue what this is or how to fix it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I am getting random system crashes. It does not happen on boot. Nothing specific triggers this, it might not happen for 5 hours or so...... but once it happened 3 times within 6 minutes, each time when clicking on a certain link. Mostly it happens when I click on a link but it might also happen when I do nothing.
When it does happen, the screen suddenly goes black and then the system will boot itself up again automatically. A message will say "The system has recovered from a serious error - please report this to Microsoft".
This problem started about 5 days ago, when I had to change over to a different ISP. I told the new ISP guy that I was getting frequent "Limited or no connectivity" balloons. He said this was due to a certain network security key, as my wireless network was being managed by the wireless USB adaptor. So he changed my wireless network to be managed by Windows. The next day I had the first crash.
I have called him back but he says it is my machine that causes the black screen crashes, not the new cable modem or the wireless network management settings.
I run XP with SP3 and IE8. I have not installed any new programs.
What could be causing the black screen crashes?

I recently purchased a new PC. The following are the specs:

Processor: Intel Core I7 2600K
MOBO: Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3
Graphics: Gigabyte GTS450
RAM: 2 x 4GB - Corsair PC133
HDD: 2TB - WD SATA 3
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium x64

NOTE: I have not overclocked the hardware.

When I installed the OS and drivers, I used all the default drivers provided by the hardware manufacturers.

After setting it up, I was seeing black screen without a mouse cursor displayed after the Welcome screen. At this point the HDD activity led stopped blinking and the only way for me was to do a hard reboot/shutdown. I found that I was only able to access the OS through Safe Mode.

I proceeded to uninstall the graphics driver and all the graphics apps, and allowed Windows Update to detect and install the graphics driver accordingly, which it did. It seemed to fix the problem **partially**, where I was no longer seeing the black screen immediately after the Welcome screen. Now, what I have found is that the system boots up find and I see the desktop coming up. However, at random point after the PC is turned on, I hit the black screen of death (mouse cursor not available, HDD activity led not blinking). At this point, the only way to get out of it is to perform a hard reboot/shutdown.

I removed the GTS450 graphics card and I'm using the MOBO on-board HDMI to connect to my monitor, and now it seems to be working just fine - been using it for 2 days and I have not seen any black screens.

A:Gigabyte GTS450 causes random black screen

Hello Dr. Welcome to the Forum.

It sounds like a failed video card. But you should check to eliminate other simple reasons before replacing the card.

A graphics card can also fail due to insufficient power, overheating, driver conflicts, RAM issues, and connection issues.

Power: check to be sure that the PCI-e power connectors are properly plugged into the card. IIRC the 450 uses two 8 pin connectors. Unplug and re-plug these any make sure they are fully seated.
Check your power supply specs and let us know the Brand & Model, how many total watts, and if you can, the number of Amps it puts out on the 12 volt. It should be 22A or more for that card IIRC.

I think we can rule out overheating, as the error occurs right away. The card doesn't have time to overheat.

Driver conflicts might occur when both graphics engines are trying to run at once. Many modern motherboard's BIOS automatically switch off the onboard graphics when a graphics card is detected in the slot. But you should check.
With the 450 installed in the computer, go into safe mode and navigate to the Device Manager and check to see if only one or both graphics adapters are shown.
If both are shown, choose the on-board adapter, right click, and then DISABLE (don't uninstall).
If that makes no difference, and you can go into your BIOS settings, you could disable the onboard graphics manually there (be sure the 450 is still installed when you do this).
In all cases above you want to see if the system will r... Read more

hello bleeping computer world. im sure you have had many cases of black screens popping up while gaming. i know the issue might have to do with my laptop heating up, but i just want to double check as this has only started happening recently on my new vaio vgn-fw490J laptop.

im running on vista home premium sp1 with a radeon hd 4650 graphics card and have installed/run speed fan on automatic fan speed as some forums have suggested, but my black problem still hasnt gone away.

it has only happened while i played HoN (Heroes of Newerth), a pretty graphically demanding game, but again im puzzled because i played the game perfectly fine for two~three weeks, then one day i suddenly get a black screen, then another, and then another... etc.

if you guys can help, that would be awesome and greatly appreciated!

thanks :]

A:random black screen while gaming on my laptop

It could be driver related, but it is probably a heat issue.

I am currently in the process of troubleshooting a computer that BSOD's randomly. It always happens after some amount of idle time according to the user that uses it. I would appreciate any direction you can provide so I can stop this from happening. I have attached the .dmp file and I will list the checks I have done so far.

The last three times the black screen has happened, there was no minidump. It happened two times yesterday (Friday) and once today.

The info I got from SF Diagnostic tool is attached. The minidump blames NTOSKRNL.EXE, but I have no clue what this is or how to fix it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi and welcome to TSF,

1. Please try another monitor if possible to eliminate your monitor from the equation.

2. I believe that board has built in graphics, please try and connect to the other vga port on the I/O board on back of pc. You may need to go into bios to enable the internal IGP(graphics built in adapter) beforehand.

So I just upgraded from a GTX 550 TI to a GTX 980 and since upgrading my computer will crash after 5-15 minutes of playing any game. The screen will go black and ill be able to hear some audio for a short period of time before it turns into a loud buzzing sound and then the computer resets. As soon as I log back in it gives me the "Windows Has Recovered From An Unexpected Shutdown" dialog. I tried several different fixes, I reinstalled all my drivers (doing a clean install), I've made sure they are the most recent version, I've replaced and tested the RAM (went and bought new RAM and tried playing with it, still crashes). I've taken the 980 out and put the 550 TI back in and tried to play the same games, no crashes whatsoever on the 550 TI. As soon as I put the 980 back in, crashes resume. I've tried a non-destructive reinstall of Windows 7.
And after a month of trying everything I can possibly find on it, I RMAed the card assuming it was a bad card. I finally got the replacement card from NewEgg just last week, and the first game I tried to play it did the same exact crash.
I figured it had to be some kind of driver issue, that somehow some old driver or something was still hiding somewhere on my install, so I did a completely fresh install, formatted the drive, and tried again.
Borderlands 2 went for 67 minutes before I decided to quit playing, and Call of Duty Ghosts went for ~30 minutes before crashing with the black screen and then resetting.

Hi everyone,

I am having a non-fatal, yet excruciatingly irritating problem with my dad's desktop PC. Lately, when the PC is booted up, the screen will often not start up, i.e. It displays "No cable detected" and then the green light turns orange and screen then goes totally blank. It seems to have popped out of nowhere, I thought that it might have been the new sound card (Asus Xonar Essense STX) that we installed a few weeks ago causing the problem, but if it was that then I would have had this problem earlier and the sound card is functioning fine. I suspect that the graphics card is for some reason not being detected and loaded at boot by the BIOS all of a sudden, as I can click around randomly after computer starts up properly and can login to Windows (with no display still) so I think that rules out CPU and RAM. If the computer starts up properly (screen works), then everything works 100%, I can play Call of Duty World at War with most settings at full and no problem with the graphics card when running. It isn't just the graphics card's DVI port, as it also happens with VGA. I'm pretty sure it's not the monitor (Proline MON19LCD) that's the problem. I can actually get the computer to start up properly right at the start if i press the reset button on the computer while it is booting up if I have no screen signal, but that's probably not healthy for the PC... I don't really know where to go from here, I'm no expert ... Read more

Hi, sorry if this is in the wrong place or anything i'm new to the forum.

Recently my computer has started crashing randomly.
It mostly happens when i am playing various games but has also happened once when i was just watching a video on YouTube.

When it crashes both of my monitors go black as if they were going into standby mode, then after a couple of seconds i start hearing a loud buzzing sound through my headset, then after about 15-20 seconds the computer just restarts itself.

The computer is custom built and is just over 2 years old but this crash as only started happening within the last month and a bit.

The crashes themselves are completely sporadic, some times i can go several days, even a week or so playing games with no problems, then the next day it will crash during a game and then again the next day.

Sorry about the lack of detail in the specs but im not that great with troubleshooting, so if there is any other information you need please let me know how i can get it.

Specs:
CPU: AMD FX(tm)-8150 Eight-Core Processor 3.61GHz
OS: Windows 7 64bit Service Pack 1
GPU: GeForce GTX 690
16GB RAM

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hola!

Well, for the past few weeks my computer has been acting in a way it's never acted before. It all started last month when my PC crashed out of nowhere. The screen went black and the music in the background (was playing a game) was looped. So, I shut it down, started her back up a good 15 minutes later, and everything seemed fine. About 30-60 minutes later she crashed again, this time with a blank pink screen. I've been building computers for some time, I've seen loads of errors, but never a pink screen.

I rebooted, started up the game again, a couple minutes passed, and she crashed again, only this time the screen was cyan.

Gah! Again, she crashed, this time the screen was black with vertical multi-colored lines, almost like a snowy TV. So, I figured this must be the new graphics drivers I just downloaded. So, I booted safe mode, uninstalled the drivers, restarted, loaded up some new ones, everything worked fine.

A day or so later she went black again while playing a game. At this point I'm pulling out all of my hair. I check all connections, jiggled the RAM, made sure the CPU was seated correctly... the cpu? I unhooked the CPU fan and, low and behold, there wasn't much in the way of TIM. I went to my local radio shack, bought some arctic silver 5, slapped some on my freshly cleaned CPU and heatsink, turned the machine on, success!

Or so I thought.

Last night while playing a game my PC went black again. Only this time there wasn't anything I could... Read more

Random weird black screen after logging(FIXED) - Used For Helping

Ok, so I've got this Toshiba Satallite laptop here with Vista Home Premium and its doing something weird, havn't seen it before and I've tried a few different things, tested RAM and Hard Drive, no errors. Tried without battery and with battery, tried safe mode and tried normal.

So heres the problem. I start it up, seems to be working great, but after awhile, and at completely random times, the screen goes black(still on, but no visuals at all) Hard drive light stops completely, no activity.

It happend once before I even got typing my password, other times its when I go to install a program(different ones), Install and update/check for updates, after I've installed updates, just, random. It does not seem to be an over-heating issue as I have used Speed Fan to check the temperature of my processor and it sits at 38 - 45 (highest was 48 while installing a program, no black screen) It doesn't ALWAYS crash when installing but it seems to more often then not.

I fixed one small issue where Windows Installer was set to manually start and I couldn't get a few things to install right so I thought that was my problem, first try right after, program installed, no black screen, but then shortly after it was done, i was surfing the internet and it went black.

I can't seem to pinpoint what is causeing this as it seems to happen at differnet points(before... Read more

Hello TechSupport people!

I come to you with an issue that I cannot find ANY information on across the internet.

Things to know:
-I am using an Acer Aspire M3802
-750GB storage space
-4GB RAM
-I use an NVIDIA GeForce GT 230 graphics card
-Both disc drives are nearly full
-I have recently installed two video editing programmes (30 day trials)
-For about half a year my computer has had minor glitches when playing Youtube videos or music

So I was on the surfing the internet and my monitor suddenly goes completely black. The fan was still going and the lights were still on, but I couldn't interract with the computer because I had no display whatsoever. About an hour beforehand I had been converting some HD video files, which was probably using up a lot of memory, and I had been Skyping too. The computer had been running a lot more slowly over the past couple of days, but had shown no signs of being about to break.
So I turned the computer off and then tried to reboot it. The Acer logo appeared, but after that nothing else happened, not even the 'start Windows normally' screen. The mouse still lit up and the computer seemed to be alive, but it downright refused to display anything at all. When I briefly tilted it, however, the display popped up for another millisecond. I tried rebooting this morning, at which point the 'Acer' screen briefly flashed up. I managed to start it up in 'safe mode' and the core features of the computer appear to be working. However, when I tried to ... Read more

Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 2494HM (included just in case).

Steps already taken:
- Driver updates (all)
- Windows updater (important and optional updates)
- Dusting
- Changed my video card from HD 5800 to the current one. Problem was not solved.
- Reinstalled a fresh copy of Windows 7. No change.
- Considering sacrificing sheep to elder gods...

I am now at a loss for the next steps to be taken. I apologize if this is not the right thread as my computer does not crash per say, although the hard reset seems to be my only option anyways.

Thank you.

A:Random black screen + lockup (GW2, Skyrim)

It would seem that Windows updater lies. I manually looked up every manufacturer site and downloaded new drivers. System is now stable.

I own a Gateway NV52, and the issue with locking up began after I upgraded to Win7. After reloading the factory default of Vista on this, the laptop keeps randomly locking up and then going to a blank black screen.

I've gone to other threads and tried running MemTest and Vista's Memory Diagnostic and they both came up with nothing. I've also seen that other posters have attached dump files and other generated information from the computer to help solve their issues, but I don't know where to find these files to even get started. Can anyone help? What other information do I need to give to get started on the right track?

A:Random Black Screen Freeze, not after login

I would first do a system file check.

Then you can view any error messages and see what they mean from this Microsoft site.

How to analyze the log file entries that the Microsoft Windows Resource Checker (SFC.exe) program generates in Windows Vista

If errors are found run the test again as it sometimes takes about 3 passes to get it all fixed. Sometimes even that fails to repair it but post back with results and we will take it from there.

Hi guys! I've got a Lenovo Y50-70 (2015) with a GTX960M under the hood which I bought in January. I've been having a strange problem with my screen. Sometimes out of the blue my screen just goes black. But its not like the screen turns off, the keyboard and the borders of the screen are lit, its just I can't see the cursor or anything I had on the screen originally. The problem doesn't resolve itself unless I hold down the power button and shut it down. I've had this problem at least 4 times and since I'm going to start going to uni soon, I'd rather not have the problem of losing important work if the issue does happen again Thanks in advance!

i thought it was fine this afternoon but when i close the laptop and try to get back in from sleep mode it goes all black.

Have run malewarebytes-all clean
Have run Adwcleaner - all clean
Have run Driver Fusion to update drivers
Have run CrapCleaner to clean junk files and registry

thanks!!!!!!!!

A:Black Screen of Death (random and crazy)

If you only have a black screen...just how did you run the above apps you claim to have used?

In any case...IMO, a black screen is likely to be a hardware problem and running any application isn't going to address that.

Is This your system?

Did you try to boot into safe mode?

Hiya guys, newbie here to the forums. I've been having a problem where a black screen would randomly appear while I'm playing games.I'm sorry if I picked the wrong section. I have built a custom computer a few days ago, and I've had a problem with my screen going black when playing games. I'm using a Windows 8..1 64-bit computer along with an XFX Radeon R7 260X graphics card. I know it isn't my HDMI cables. When my computer's screen goes black, I can hear audio from my videos and Skype but after a few minutes I cease to hear anything, and sometimes, it will loop the sounds over and over again. I've been using my laptop hard drive for my computer, and I had a similar problem, as it froze a lot. I'm suspecting my hard drive needs to be formatted. Along with that, I have to force shut-down my computer, as it doesn't turn off properly. If any help is available, it'll be greatly appreciated. I'm using an Intel Core i5 Processor, and I'm also using a 650 watt power supply. 8GB of RAM and Direct X 11.2.

Hi, I've been having troubles with my laptop screen. Upon reopening my laptop from sleep mode, the screen remains black instead of loading up the login screen. I've plugged in an HDMI external monitor and it displays fine so I know it is the laptop screen. Also if I restart the laptop, the laptop screen works fine. I've tried updating graphics drivers and adjusting external monitor options (Win+P) but with no success. Any suggestions on what I should do? I've had this laptop for a while now and there is no valid warranty.Thank you

Dear experts!

I receive BSOD and black screens at random interval. Even if I have done a clean install. I also changed from Norton to AVG, because the Norton driver could have given me memory problems according to program 'whocrashed'.

Memtest gives at random a fault. Sometimes 1 times in 6 hours or nothing...

I have attached the required logs. I hope someone can take a look at it. I believe the problem is bad memory or the motherboard... I hope it will be just bad memory.

Thanks in advance!

Edwin

I have been having some issues (a non-responsive black screen) when I start up my machine for the past few months. Initially it was only when Windows 7 started up, but of late it even hangs when I go into the BIOS. I initially thought it may have been an issue with Windows itself but now I'm not so sure. I have run the Alien Autoposy software powered by PC-Doctor supplied by Alienware (Dell) to test my hardware but it doesn't seem to show up any errors. My machine is about 5 years old and has had no hardware changes made to it.

Any ideas?

Sorry if I'm being a bit vague here, I'm a newbie at these forums.

That right there tells me everything I need to know.

It is 100% a hardware issue if that is happening. The bios would not be effected by a failing hard drive, but ram it could be. I would do both below anyway.

If your system is freezing, that is not a good sign and is usually caused by hardware failure.

Check your HDD for errors, and then run a memtest.

First of all , as a newbie here I'd like to say hello to everybody on this forum and also apologize if this is posted in the wrong section since defacto my problem involves black screen and not a tipical blue screen.

Computer is custom built, all new parts, 5 months old. I became aware of this problem about 2 months after.

My system specs:

i7 4930k - overclocked (bios reset to factory settings later after problem became continuous annoyance)
Corsair H110i GT
Asus Sabertooth x79 mobo
16 Gb DDR3 Corsair XMS3 1600MHz
Evga GeForce GTX 970 SC
Corsair -CS850M 850w , PSU

So this problem has been bugging me for some 3 months now.

Basically what would happen is computer would freeze, if there was sound playing atm, sound would freeze in a "bzzzzz" fashion (continuously looping), 2 seconds later screen would turn black and the computer would restart.
I have disabled later "restart on failure" feature, hoping I would get some information on screen when it happens, but sadly now it just stays on black screen without resetting.

This happens completely random, and so it happens that it is always during some not intensive computing (idle, web browsing, youtube playing, sometimes when working in 3d modeling program -3ds Max).
On the other side, it never happened when computer was doing some intensive 3d rendering or gaming - coincidence or not, I don't know yet...

Biggest problem now is that I'm still unable to recreate the event. I've trie... Read more

I'll play WC3 in my free time sometime, and randomly a black screen will pop up and you can't touch anything to make it stop except for powering down and then back up again. It only happens when i use this program. Wondering if there's any way that this could stop happening, since i have to turn my computer off several times a day and keep losing progress in the game (on and offline). Thanks

A:Warcraft 3: Reign Of Fire, Random Black Screen

hi . i have warcraft and starcraft. and i dont get this.
it took me some time to get my games to work but.
on google type. disable data dep. it should give you a code for which you type into command prompt. when u disable data dep, all idiotic inteferences that vista dishes out will stop. and more apps will be compatible aswell.

However if the game is running from an iso, make sure the correct .exe's are put in the right place. and after an install, you should replace .exe and world edit with the crack and not have both crack and official in the directory. If any of this dosent work, just update ur graphics driver. Amen.

My Vista Machine has really given me zero issues except a recent problem with Windows Update and one issue with Media Center.

Randomly, but not frequently, i start media center and the screen is black but I have sound.

The fix, is always to shutdown and restart the machine. Restarting Media center never ever works it always requires a shutdown.

Is there a cache or something else that I should be looking at?

Since Friday my screen goes completely black at random times, and the PC is still running. Fans stay at the speeds they were, and windows is also still running from what I can tell. The screen goes black for 2-5 seconds and then it returns to normal. This happens about 3-4 times a day. First time happened while I was playing Far Cry 4, then a while after when I was watching a video on YouTube. The monitor does not turn off, rather the screen renders black over the entire screen. . GPU has been fine during gaming sessions and video-watching
I tested with two different monitors and it's not a monitor problem since it happens in both of them. I also ran virus and spyware scans and they came up with nothing
What could be causing this problem?

I get seemingly random BSOD. I'm not around when they happen but I know they happen because I find the minidump files. The computer either then goes to black/blank screen or reboots to one, I'm not sure which. The power light is on but the drive/activity light is off completely. When I restart and check the minidump file, it ALWAYS points to a Code 124 error with the driver being NTOSKRNL.EXE +4adb3c. The only thing I can find in the event viewer is that there are four Code 18 WHEA-logger entries indicating a Machine Check Exception, source processor, code ids: 0, 2, 4, and 6 (these occur after restart not before the crash). I can go 2-3 days without a BSOD, or have a day like yesterday where I got three BSODs. The machine could be idle when this happens but sometimes I leave several things open (Firefox, windows explorer, VLC running, HWMonitor, etc.); the problem is impossible to reproduce.
