How to set columns to a fixed width in Explorer

Q: How to set columns to a fixed width in Explorer

Hi all,

I find it irritating to have to set the column width (name, date etc.) wider for every folder I open.
I am always using the Explorer full screen.
Can this be achieved globally?

When I arrange the worksheet columns to be only as wide as they need to be, the print preview (and the actual print out) has extra space after (to the right of) the last entry in the cell. So a cell that looks like : |xxx|, when printed, looks like : |xxx |. Can that be fixed ?  The work-around I have found, is to make the original columns too narrow, so that rightmost contents are hidden from view - that is really a quite undesirable method, though it achieves a 'correct' printout.

When I scan a document with, let's say an three inch column. It is saved with that width and if I want to work with it in Word I have to manually delete carriage returns to make the text lines full width.

Is there an easier way to do this?

Sorry if my question is vague; I have virtually no Word experience.

Just installed Windows 10 Home English version.
Open notepad, choose font: Consolas (default) / Courier New / Lucida Console, CJK characters are not fixed width.
In previous versions of Windows, these monospace fonts indeed display CJK characters in fixed width.
Is this normal? How to fix this?

So I am completely new to VB and coding. As in I understand the logic and understand how to read it, i just cant write it (much like how I am with Spanish, go figure) Anyways, I have a relatively simple project I am working on but it is tough for me because I suck at writing code.

Basically I have a file that is fixed width.

My Issue: dealing with a standard file that contains headers and footers as well

I am assuming I would need to write something that would say open file, etc, etc, then it would state to read in the first line and after that there would be a Do While Not EOF loop but it would need to be NOT EOF +1 because I would need to end the loop at the 2nd to last line so that I can read in the footer as well. I know that I can do this simply by doing an import spec in access but the incoming file will frequently change so I need to do it in VB so that I can modify the columns and add in new data etc. So if someone could basically help me with a simple coding framework, how to first read in the file, how to read in the first line of data, then create the loop, read in the whole line (because I can then write it specifically to my file), and how to do the footer, I know I can do the rest. I am one of those people who works well off of examples so Im just looking for a good blueprint/framework from someone. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have been struggling with this for a few days now. I have very basic marco knowledge so be gentle.

I have a macro

Sheets("Sheet1").Range("A1:A4"), Unique:=False

Sheets("Sheet1").Range("B1: B4 "), Unique:=False
If Range("F12") = Date Then

Sheets("Sheet1").Range("E1: E4 "), Unique:=False
End If
End If
End If
End If
End If
End Sub

which sort of works but rather than writing it out hundreds of times can I loop it?

Based on CERT, ISC, and other warnings below, the capability for security software to interrogate embedded Unicode characters in HTTP requests could be a serious exposure that needs to be patched by several vendors? So far, there are no known in-the-wild attacks: Full-Width/Half-Width Unicode Bypasses HTTP Scanning is Unicode? US-Cert has a vulnerability note out that describes how Full-Width and Half-Width Unicode encoding manages to bypass many HTTP content scanning engines (739224). This would allow remote attackers to hide malicious HTTP traffic by encoding it and have it slip happily past your IDS/IPS. This isn't an exploit itself, but allows exploits that would normally be detected (or blocked) to get through your IDS/IPS undetected.

Guys, strange issue here, started lately - not sure when exactly, though, probably a couple of weeks maybe four.

I can't make a window wider than about one screen width - 1920px - Windows just won't let me. (it can partially extend to other screens, but the total window width remains)
It used to work, I sometimes look at data where a 4-5000 px wide view is beneficial.
I'm using the 3 screens as one desktop via "nvidia surround", 5760x1200

Anyone got any ideas?

(and I'm sorry if I put this into the wrong forum, feel free to move it)

Thanks in advance!

Thought someone might be interested, I've found the culprit: it was the nVidia driver.

Normally, Windows will remember the view set in only a single folder, and for how it was when last closed.

If you like, once you set the column width to how you like in Windows Explorer for that folder, you could use either tutorial below to apply to all folders or only all folders with the same folder template.Folder View - Apply to Folders

When I am using Windows Explorer in Win 7, I often have columns of data that have only have 3 or 4 characters in them. I'd like to reduce the column width so I can see other data, but it will only go so far (big enough for 8-10 characters). Is there a registry tweak or other setting that will allow a smaller minimum column width?

A:Minimum column width in Windows Explorer

You can right click the column tool bar (eg) Name, Date Modified, Type,Size etc and choose Size All Columns to Fit. Or you can go over to the column break for between Name and Date Modified, when your pointer turns to a double sided arrow, you can drag it to the left to the desired width. You can right click also and remove the check boxes for any column details you do not want to view.

I'd like to apply some custom columns to my windows explorer folder views, mainly showing id3 tag info and remembering column widths.

I have folder c:\music\, which has ~1200 subfolders so I'm looking for way to make custom settings to c:\music and then applying them to all subfolders (win xp style).

"Properties/customize -> folder style -> music" seems to add some id3 tags but not the ones i want, also it doesn't do anything about column width. :-/

Ideas anyone? Or should I try something like

I have used the tutorial on this site to add my Computer to the nav pane as I am a school Admin and need it for the mapped drives and not libraries. Its added fine and deleted what I wanted but when i open up my computer or their homefolder its expanding the nav pane the full width of the screen with a slim bit at the right for the folders. I can't seem to reset this as everytime I reboot it goes back to how it looked before.

Anyone had this or has a solution to fix it? I have tried a few things including the resetshell file on this site.. and I found a shell32.dll which moved it to the right but my computer still covers all the nav pane.

If that can't help then I may need to disabel the nav pane altogether but I can't find that either as GP doesn't have any obvious solutions.

A:Windows Explorer opens Nav Pane full width

Have you tried dragging the edge to the left when you get the double arrow? Look at screenshot below it does not show the double arrow for some reason the screenshots will not pick it up but you should get one there.
If you have tried that already do Option 2 of this tutorial SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker it will not harm any data or programs you have installed it will try to find and repair any corrupt system files that you have.

In Windows Explorer under XP, all file types had the same basic set of columns... File name/date modified/file type/size. This is mostly true with Windows 7, but I notice that with certain file types such as mp3s, wavs and jpegs, Microsoft have tried to be clever and choose columns more appropriate to the file type. So mp3s now default to name/#/title/contributing artist/album.

My question is: are these defaults user accessible?

I'm a photographer and I have about 100 folders containing jpegs. I'd like to change the columns currently shown, but I don't want to have to change 100 folders individually.....

In Windows Explorer in Windows 7 I like to use the Details view. I have set of columns/headings that I prefer to use. The problem is I would like to set these columns up and have them be the default for every folder I open. As it is now every folder I open I have to customize the columns again. They stay for that folder but every new folder requires me to customize. Is there a default option so that I can set what I want and have it apply to every folder?

I just installed Windows 7 a few days ago. Prior to this I had XP on the machine that 7 is now on. I did not use Explorer in XP I used a different file manager. I did this mainly for the split view. Now that 7 as the snap feature getting two panes is easy with Explorer so I am going to give it a try for a while. Thanks.

This happened for many years until a few days ago:
In Windows Explorer (in Windows 7), when I click on a folder on the left side of the screen, four columns are displayed on the right side of the screen: Name, Date modified, Size, Type; and the scroll bar is on the far right side of the screen. All is good.

Now when I click on a folder on the left side of the screen, the same four columns are displayed on the right side of the screen, but the scroll bar on the right side of the screen has shifted far to the left so that only some of the characters of the Name field are displayed; the rest of the name and the other three columns are hidden. I can move the scroll bar to the far right side of the screen (where it used to be), but the next time I open Windows Explorer, the scroll bar has shifted to the left side of the screen again, covering up columns' displays, so I have to manually move the scroll bar to the far right side of the screen again.

How do I get the scroll bar to stay on the far right side of the screen like it used to?
And why did it change? Did I do something inadvertently?

Hello all, I hope you had a great xmas/family time

I had been having plenty of "not responding" apps and windows, so I did some registry clean thing online.

Im not sure that caused the second problem, but its really weird and Ive never seen it before, in "details view", there is only an icon for each file/folder, but no name, no columns of any kind, just blank. If I RH mouse click where the column name would be, I see a blank where there would be a list of columns to add or remove. Then when I choose "More..." there is NOTHING in the list of potential other columns!

The weirdest part, this only happens sometimes / to certain folders, I am not sure which and I will keep a diary now... but I would love to sort it out but dont know where to start.

(ie: Track, Artist, length, etc) I'm a simple person, and only want the main columns displayed, (Size, Type, Date) and Windows 7 seems to ignore me when i change the views. Even the "Reset All", and "Apply to All" seem to be ignored after a day later.

In XP your could remove them from RegEdit under HKCR\SystemFileAssociations and deleting the "Audio", "Video", and "Images" keys, and Explorer would 'forget' how to handle them, and details view would remain the same, but Win7 doesn't seem to respond to this either.

I'm on Win 7 Ultimate x64.

I just upgraded to a 4K monitor, and I've read on some issues related high DPI displays, and this might be one of them. I've set the default magnification to 150% in my Windows 7 display settings. And for the most part things look ok. But I noticed some strange behavior within file explorer.

Here's an image for reference
You can see all that unnecessary extra space in the "Size" and "Date Modified" column. So naturally I try to drag the column width to make it smaller. But it wouldn't cooperate! If I try to make the Size column smaller, Explore jerks around and suddenly makes either the "Name" or "Date Modified" column bigger. Same if I try make one of the other columns smaller.

I've tried the Right click options on the columns: "Size Column to fit" and "Size all columns to fit". No good. It would still give me a bunch of unnecessary space in all columns.

This issue didn't happen on my old 1080p monitor. I can resize columns as I wished and they would behave.

Anyone have any idea what's happening and how to solve this?

I plugged a friends Seagate Expansion drive (SRD00F1) into my machine's usb port, Windows Vista started to load the drivers and then says success. I went to My Computer and the machine can't see the drive. After this I started to see the following occurring:

1) Explorer shows no filenames or folder names. If I click on the file to rename, the name is there, but when I close that, the name disappears.
2) All the normal column names in Explorer details view are gone, "Author" is the only one showing. All of the common ones are unavailable when I try to choose details by right clicking the column header, Filename, Size, Date Created/Accessed/Modified etc...
3) Many windows won't open, specifically Control Panel windows like "Backup and Restore Center", System, regedit.exe.
4) The "Start Search" feature of the Start Bar returns nothing. I found out later, No searches work.
5) In My computer the sizes of the drives and free space are in bytes, not KB or MB.

I have applied settings to all folders
Have set the disable automatic folder types in registry from another tutorial on this site

This result in the folder columns been set for the widest item in each column which is correct.

However when said folder is closed & re-opened the outer frame reverts back to its original size, not what i set.

I've seen many threads here describing explorer.exe crashes. Some ppl have it when opening folders with particular file types, when dragging files, when opening network center etc. Some cen be remedied by disabling DEP, some have other solutions and some remain.

But I've this particuar one. When I open start menu and just POINT on control panel or any other item on the right (black) side of the menu, explorer.exe occasionaly crashes, but not always.

I've spent a whole day trying to get rid of this and believe it or not, it stopped crashing by doing the following - in the properties of taskbar i just changed menu icons to be small instead of large. That's it. I know it sounds strange, but it works for me. I've tried to get it down again many times, but it haven't crashed since.

So, if anyone is having the same problem, try to do it, it may help.

I will try do do some other "crash tests" when i get home from work, because i need to be sure.

In the end, it can also be just some coincidence, but i don't of anything else i changed to cause this coincidence, so i will post to confirm or say that it crashed again.

OK, i tried it hard, believe me, but it doesn't crash on me! So, I assume it works

A:Start menu - explorer.exe problem fixed?

I tried this and it doesn't work so it appears that the answer was something you did while you were trying to fix it and/or it just temporarily stopped. At any rate this problem for me comes and goes as it likes. It seems something hasn't fully prepared itself before it is expecting text. It almost certainly is a bug in the indexing of the files that you are searching.

I still haven't found the fix for this but fortunately it is only a fraction of the time I am using vista that this bug rears its ugly face.

I started out with the two previous posts about macros (post 1, post 2) that move rows into columns, but I'm having a little trouble getting it to work for what I need. First, I'm trying to do a data merge into Word, but in order to get the data merge to work/look the way I want it to, I need the XLS data to be in columns.

I'm attaching an example file that has one worksheet of the sample data (though my "real" data has about 300 rows) and the other worksheet is an example of the outcome I need.

Is there anyway I can do what I need? Exporting into another file or another worksheet within this file would be fine.

Thanks in advance.

This script error first came up when I clicked on the start menu & double clicked on the Access Aptiva program that was part of the menu. When the error message asks if I want to continue running scripts, when I click on either Yes or No, what sounds like the first few notes of the opening of the Access Aptiva program play & then nothing. This continues even though I have done the following things to try to fix this:

1. I have checked the "Disable script debugging" & unchecked the "Display a notification about every script error" which I had learned about in this forum.

2. I got desperate enough to pay for RegistryFix but running that program did not fix the error either. Support staff at RegistryFix then told me to do the following:

Win 7 got a bit notorious for issues related to long (30 - 60 sec) pauses when moving, copying, or deleting files, mostly on the LAN but also at times on local disks. Some of this was attributed to thumbnails, opportunistic locking (SMB2.x and FCB), folder size, and TCP parameters such as offload and scaling. There are a lot of "try this" posts but no real solution. Sometimes one could wait a minute to delete 2 files from a small folder on a local disk.

I know the multi-tasking and UI side are improved, and the "calculating..." dialog is gone, but it's hard to find a clear answer if this problem has actually been solved, partly solved, or not solved at all in Win 8. Does Windows 8 do basic local/LAN file operations reliably at sensible speeds, or does it still unreasonably slow down and delay?

I'd like to hear the experience of users on this forum as it's a really annoying Win 7 issue, Microsoft put a lot of work into file and explorer improvement, and it would be a huge motivator if it's solved in Win 8

This is with Windows 7. For a while, I was not able to launch Internet Explorer much like this person: I also had an issue with Windows Live Mail where annoying pop-up messages saying the program stopped working would happen while composing emails (often many endlessly on top of each other). I tried the fix in post #14 of that thread and it got IE to launch and the annoying pop-ups to stop, however now I can't do much in IE without it crashing. Sometimes I will get a similar pop-up message as the email had and other times it will just lock up and lock up Windows with it (and I have to use CTRL+ALT+DEL to log off in order to regain control). I cannot access bookmarks or history (no crash with that, but nothing happens) and cannot use buttons like Home or Print (which cause crashes). Any ideas?

I have been working on a project for a few weeks and I could really use some help. I'm attaching a dummy file (example1) that is an example of how my XLS comes to me each month.

I need a macro that leaves me with the second file (example2). If the macro could just grab the Student name, then put the following info for each student all on 1 row, that would be perfect:

Child's Name | Date In | Time In | Rounded | Time Out | Rounded

Sometimes for some reason there is a student with a (Cont) after their name. I need that row deleted and just pull the times up onto the same row as other times. The example2 file might make sense.

Here are the steps I am doing manually that I hope a macro could do for me!
Un-merge cells: B10
Un-merge any cells with a child's name such as Doe, Jane
Delete any row with a childs name that has (Cont) after it such as Doe, Jane (Cont)
Delete rows: 1-9
Delete columns: A, C, F, H, I, J, M, N, O, and P
Manually move all info up to one row per student
Delete all empty rows below
See example2 as the completed file but I only moved a few of the rows per student for the sake of time.

Is there any way to do all of this with a macro?

Dear all

Any help with this problem:

I have a HTML page in which all the content sits inside a table which is 100% wide.

When I view it in Internet Explorer 5, the table sometimes leaves a scroll bar width gap at the right. If I refresh the page it fills the gap. The problem isn't apparent in Netscape.

I know I could force IE to refresh itself but that would take twice the load time.

Any ideas?

Hi Everyone
Hope any one can help with this basic problem query?

I subscripe to I am based in the UK. To watch the basic game via the internet i need 750kps. Before i went on holiday i could watch a game on both computers without any problems -ie continous feed. I have just started to experience problems on my standing computer(Windows XB) in bedroom.

I only use one connection at a time, for example i dont have a game on downstairs and one running upstairs. One game on either upstair or downstairs.

I have a wireless connection for both.

Now...when i test the broadband speed...

The broadband width on my laptop(Windows vista) is 6000kps
The broadband width on my standing computer is 550kps!

2.The quality is magnificent on my laptop and awful/juddery/freezing picture on my standing computer.

Does this make any sense? Also now the stand alone computer seems to struggle accessing the internet/ signal connection to my router.

It has all just recently happened - as you can tell i am a novice. Any idea what i could do?

A:Band Width

Unless you have a dedicated high speed fibre optic connection all of your own, your internet connection performance is not governed by the capabilities of you computer, as a computer. The slowest performing computer available can process data quicker than any normal domestic connection can deliver it.
Internet performance depends on how each link in a communication chain works. The chain is : computer to router; router to modem; modem to exchange; exchange to ISP's servers. The only one you have any control over is the first section. Wi-fi performance is affected by distance, materials between computer and router, and aerial position and quality - and these you have some control over. You have no control over the bandwidth your ISP is delivering unless it is significantly less than you were offered when you took out the connection contract - then you start nagging them or change provider (if that is an option).
Go to to run a check on the bandwidth you are being supplied with. For a one-off test there is no need to set up an account, but it is useful if you wish to log changes over time.

here`s the procedure:

CLick RUN then START BUTTON and TYPE; gpedit.msc

Doble Click the LIMIT RESERVABLE BANDWIDTH.It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab i.e. "By default, the Packet Scheduler Limits the system to 2O% of the BandWidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."So the TRICK is to ENABLE Reservable BandWidth, then set it to ZERO.
This will alllow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 2O%.

Hey guys, I am new to the forums.

I was just wanting to ask a question that I have been wanting to ask for a little while now. I was going to upgrade the RAM on my old netbook. It is a Samsung N130.

When I went on Amazon, I googled "2GB Netbook Ram", and it came up with a lot of searches. In the images, some of them look bigger than the others (length, and width). I was just wondering if the RAM was all the same size.

Because I really don't want to spend like ?15 on RAM when it don't even fit in my Netbook..

Thanks guys, have a nice day!

A:Is all RAM the same size? (As in, length and width, etc.)

There is RAM for desktops and then there is RAM for laptops which is much shorter in width. Second there is DDR, DDR2, and DDR3 which one you get depends on the hardware. More then likely it is DDR2.

This is the best (Fastest and larges capacity) memory you can get for your netbook:

My toolbar in Firefox goes like this:
Personal Menu (addon) - Bookmarks Menu, Refresh, Stop buttons - Bookmarks Toolbar Items - URL Bar

Prior to Firefox 3.5, my Bookmarks Toolbar would take up as much space as it needed (it has 11 favicons on it), then my URL Bar would start, and take up the rest of the space. Now however, my URL bar turns my whole Bookmarks Toolbar into a dropdown list (">>"), and extends itself so that it's next to the Stop/Refresh buttons.

I'm sure I saw a fix for this just after 3.5 came out, but at that point I'd moved all my bookmarks into my Bookmarks menu, and was happy with that- now I think I'd prefer it back the way it was.

My screen  width keeps randomly changing slightly. it does not happen all the time, but occasionally without warning. Then it will change back to normal  after a while. I have done nothing to cause this to my knowledge. The reduction in width is about 10 mm. each side when it happens.
Please, before any suggestions of malware are made, my system is clean. I scan it regularly with a selection of AVG 2014 (a complete system scan carried out on 31 July), SuprAntiSpyware and Emsisoft Emergency Kit. All come up clean. I also use Sandboxie exclusively.
My screen resolution is set at 1024 x 768 pixels and has been for a very long time.
Any clues ? Settings, files etc.that may have developed some problem. I have no intention of ending up with a pile of disconnected parts to solve this problem or go through any extensive data download analysis. If it is not a simple adjustment hiccup, I will have to live with it for a while.
If for instance overheating may be causing this problem, then it has been very hot here for about 3 weeks, so in that case I will see what happens when the weather cools down. If it is dirt accumulation in my computer cabinet, then so long as I know, I will at my convenience have the computer insides cleaned out and the fan inspected by my local service engineers.
I use the latest updated Chrome version browser.
Edit typing error- 10 cm corrected to 10 mm - first paragraph.

A:Screen width keeps changing

This could be a monitor problem. What sort of monitor are you using ?  Make and model ?
If you are concerned about your on board temperatures you could do worse than install 'Speccy' which you can get from BC :-
Since you use the expression 'my computer cabinet' can I assume this is a desktop ?  If it is, cleaning it out is a fairly simple operation requiring a smallish soft paintbrush and a can of compressed air (ideally - personally I use a vacuum cleaner, carefully, but majority opinion on BC is in favour of compressed air). If it is necessary to remove the heatsink and fan assembly from the CPU to clean them properly you will then need to clean the mating surfaces of old heat sink compound and replace it with a thin smear of new compound when you reassemble.
You don't need an engineer to check a fan. If it spins when powered up, it's working. And if there is no rumbling, whining or squealing coming from it when it is running, the bearings are OK. And in any case, fans are fairly cheap, readily available and generally easy to fit.

Old hand at XP. Forced into Windows 7. Stranger in a strange land.

In XP, to modify width of scrollbar, you would left click in desktop.
A menu called Display Properties would appear.
You would click on Appearance tab, then Advanced tab.
Click on Items, then Scrollbar on the drop down.
Then you could input a size number. The default was something like 16, and I'd always increase it to 23.
This gave me a good wide scrollbar that a frenetic mouse cursor would not easily miss.

In Windows 7, I cannot find anything like a Display Properties menu.
Cannot find anything about Appearance.

Hello all,

I m having a problem about which i have googled alot, found some solutions but unfortunately they dont apply to me system despite of having similar problem. Together with this problem, i have some other problems too which i think are interrelated to this.

The problem looks like the following image:

In first image, the bus interface is stuck at x1 though the PCIe 2.0 slot has capacity of x16 speed. The second image is of a normal gpu.

I couldnt try any of the solution given here coz my motherboard doesnt have any of these options. Still i have done some things to get rid of this:
-Tried updating motherboard BIOS
-Reinstalled different video drivers.
-Sent back the card to the company but it was fine there (that is, was running at x16)
-Tried another gfx card (9400GT) at the shop, it worked fine on the same mobo (that is, it was also running on x16)

At this point, I must tell you my specs:
XFX 8600GT 1GB
Intel DG35EC motherboard
Intel Core2Duo E8400 3GHz
Windows 7 Home Prem and Windows XP Pro SP3 32 bit
and a local, cheap 400W(i think yea it is 400W) iball PSU which has these details

Now ofc, the PSU doesnt even meet 20A on +12V rail (dunno how much req for 8600GT). Everything was running fine on this configuration when i build this pc two yrs ago. Welcome to Seven Forums eshan. You've had a spell of bad luck. It IS possible it's the PSU, but for me the 1st choice would be the GPU, then the MB. But since you've had trouble with both, and another GPU works (at least for a short test), the PSU is seeming more likely, as the common part. And it looks like you have a low end PSU.

Let's see if some more knowledgeable members don't come along with differing opinions. Your PSU may be too weak. If you look for a new one, I like Antec personally, but if you find some, post back and we can give you our opinions of which is best. I'm sure others will have their favorite brands that are good. No where on this forum or in the tuturals can I find a way to KEEP the files in a folder at a certain width.

I open all my folders with the LIST view... Then right clicking the 'Name' bar I can choose details.

At the bottom of the box it has "Width of selected column (in pixels): I change the width to 35. BUT... It is only good for that session. The moment the box is closed or I switch to another folder... It goes back to a much wider format. How do I keep the 35 width setting I want?

A:KEEP the files in a folder at a certain width?

Hello CompanyClerk,

The column width is a universal setting. A column in Windows Explorer will always be as wide as it was last set to in any Windows Explorer window.

I find that using the Size a Column to Fit or Size All Columns to Fit (Method Three in OPTION THREE at link) options help make this easier to cope with the width when dealing with columns that always have varying text lengths in them.

Hope this helps some,

Is there a way to change the width of the start menu? I would like to make it wider.

A:Start menu width

Hi xantius,

There was an option in Vista to change the Start menu to Classic view, but that's been removed in Windows 7. Instead, try right-clicking the Taskbar, selecting 'Properties', switching to the Start menu tab, and clicking 'Customize...' There are options there for changing the look and content of your Taskbar.

You could try these;

I use the true launch bar and am very happy indeed with it.

I have an IIyama LS902UT monitor, which is about 3 years old, and a new graphics cards (7600GT), which I have had about 2 months.

Recently I have noticed that when I come out of hibernation, my screen width has been adjusted. I'll adjust it wider (it's only ever a few numbers out), but when I come out of hibernate the next time, it will be too wide, and I'll have to adjust my monitor again.

I run in 1280x1024, and I have the latest graphics card drivers (91.47).

Is my monitor on it's way out?

I started a new, blank workbook and then pasted in data. When I try to move the column width by putting the cursor between the column letters and dragging to size I want, ALL the columns change to the same size! I want to adjust each column to the width I want. I have looked at whether cells are "locked," and I don't see that. PLEASE please tell me what to do! Thanks.

I need to display more columns of information so that I can bounce back and forth through my files in a large folder, in vista I could display 10-12 columns of files per screen, but in 7 I can only display 4-5 columns because it auto adjusts to the length of the file name. I don't need the whole file name, just the first 8-10 charachters. Any help or Ideas

I want to change just the width of a cell within a column without changing the column width. Help please!

A:Change cell width only in Excel

The only way I know to do this is to merge the cell with adjacent cells in the same row. Highlight the cells you want to merge and click the 'merge' icon on the toolbar.
But I don't recommend merging cells as a rule, except in the headers. It can cause all kinds of problems with sorting, cut and paste, etc. But if you think none of that is an issue for you, then go ahead.

ok excel columm width maximum characters is 255. This is causing me a massive problem when importing data from access. Most of the information is missing. Is there a work aound to this? I am using excel 2003.

A:excel column width problems

Unless all your data in Access is in memo data types (upto 1G), you should not have any problem importing data from Access into Excel - Access text files have a max of 255 records.

How are you doing the import? Can you give us a sample of a record from Access that you want to import?

P.S. Make sure you make the row tall enough in Excel -- if there are embedded character returns in your text fields, you may not see the data unless you make the rows taller....
