Previously it showed Blue Screen every time I boot my Y460; few seconds after the Window Logo. No matter how many times I reformate, it still showing Blue Screen, indicating STOP 0x00000116 and atikmpag.sys error. Subsequently, I went into the BIOS and changed the settings on the graphics switchable to discrete graphics. However its getting worst now because there is no display (totally black with no background light) every time I on my y460. Hence I need assistance and solutions, thanks.

I have been having this problem since a week or so. Broni has helped me in malware forum to rule out malware as responsible. My machine is clean and I was refered here for further help.

Here is my problem:

At boot-time, I see windows XP load screen with the progress bar, the progress bar advances to the end and then, the screen turns pitch black and all is see is an arrow cursor I can move around. I thought until yesterday that this was a permanent freeze-up, but if I wait, say, 6 minutes, the black screen disappears and windows then starts normally.

Last week, problem was intermittent, it now happens all the time.

Windows boot-up was fine before.

Please help me.

A:Windows load screen at boot, looong black screen, then normal startup

I had this tons of times with my old XP PC. It is normal if you have a lot of files on the HDD and you have little RAM. How much RAM do you have? What is the capacity of the HDD? And do you have the Windows XP disc? Would you be willing to upgrade the RAM and/or the OS if we must resort to that? Or would you rather just buy a new PC?

my PSU went out and i had it replaced and since i replaced it i havent been able to boot my pc. i plug everything in and hit the power button it immediately goes to a black screen with a blinking underscore cursor in the upper left corner about 1/4 of the way from the left side. all my fans work, the hard drive is running.

Vista (64 bit)
AMD Phenom x4 9100e 1.6GHz
ATI Radeon x1950 Pro

Power supply was from another pc i had that i didnt use anymore, same wattage just had the 6 pin PCIe connector i needed, the one currently in it is the stock one that came with the tower.

no clue what to do, F1, F2, ESC, DEL keys dont work to get to BIOS, the only responses i get are CTRL+ALT+DEL kind of restarts i think, my monitor goes to standby when i do it for a brief period of time but then fans kick on again and same black screen.

also when i hit the pause/break key it stops the beeping that is coming from the mobo. *note* if i hit the key during the beep then its continuous noise.

anyone have any advice?? any would be appreciated!!

*Edit - just to clarify, i get zero load up of anything, there is no loading screen prior to the black with blinking cursor, as soon as power is on it immediately goes to this screen.

*Edit - again i forgot to put that the 6 pin PCIe connector needed for the x1950 pro is non existant in the new PSU and i havent gotten an adaptor yet for it. dont know if that would be the reason i cant boot BIOS or windows. the original gr... Read more

sounds like you need the PCIe power connector to run your video card. Try removing the card and enabling the onboard video until you get a new PSU or adadpter.

I'm running Win7 x64 and this weekend I installed some updates using the autoupdate tool. I started to shut off/install the updates and left home. My girlfriend then called saying that there was some kind of error going on, I think it was with the harddrive (not sure though). I rush home (my baby is hurting) and see that a repair tool is working with something. Although I can't really say what ( I was in a rush).

Anyway, now when I try to boot I get stuck right after the logo/loading screen with nothing but a black screen and my mousecursor which I can move around.

It seems that things are sort of working behind the darkness, energy management is the same, I get different resolutions when trying with safe mode although just the black screen.
I've tried all the common tips and tricks such as: Ctrl+Alt+Del, Shift x 5, repair using boot disc etc.
I thought of doing a rollback of the system but I can't find any points of restoration to choose from, I was under the impression that such a point was created before every update?

I've messed around with anything and before I reinstall windows I thought I'd check with you guys.

I recently got a Lenovo Y50 a couple months ago. I've been taking very good care of it, checking for viruses nearly every day and cleaning out everything daily as well, because I need this one to last because it will be my PC for college. But yesterday I booted her up and it showed the lenovo logo, then nothing. Black screen. No cursor or anything on the screen. Keyboard LEDs are on and caps lock and things can turn on and off. I've tried to restart multiple times, restored the system to 4 days ago, taking it off the charger and putting it on, I just don't know what's wrong. I don't know if safe mode will help but I have no idea how to get there on windows 8 anyways. Please and thank you )-:

A few months ago, I've upgraded many computers with Windows7 from XP. Clean installs. On some, even bothered to drop in an intel X25 SSD unit.

One one such computer, a ThinkPad T61 with a Core2Duo (2.2Ghz), 2GB DDR2 and Intel X25-G2 80 - it was quick and stable. Oh, its Win7-PRO 32bit.
But for the past few weeks, the performance has dropped. I've ran diags on the drive, manual trim with intel tools. Nothing amiss. Watching the drive light, it would seem the OS is thinking a lot, then access the drive - think, etc.

Original boot time on a clean Win7 was about 15 seconds. If I remember, it went up to about 22~25secs with all software and updates. Today, its about 2m 20s before the computer is usable.

It does seem better if I'm not using a pass-word log-in. It the ThinkPad boots to desktop in 35seconds with the jingle. But moving the cursor to the taskbar or start menu and you get the busy-circle. Starting Task manager shows 100% CPU usage until its a bit over 2minutes past POST.

With a password, at about 30 sec, I can enter the password - but soon after it usually goes to black screen with a mouse pointer for about a minute, before finally a desktop... again, just over 2 minutes.

After boot up, my processes were up around 80. I have disabled some items in SERVICES and MSCONFIG that really were not needed and was able to lower than number down to about 50~52. Overall, no change in boot performances. opening apps like MS-WORD, browsers, etc are nowhere near as... Read more

Just today, I came back to my computer to find that my HDMI input went blue for no reason! After troubleshooting to no avail, I switched to VGA and was able to get it to work.

Now, after Win7 loads and brings me to the main accounts screen, all I can see is my mouse cursor and nothing else.

I am currently in safe mode and I have rolled back my video drivers, but still am unable to get it to boot regularly.

Did a spybot and ad-aware scan and I don't think it is a virus.

I would hate to think it is my video card, but I recently (about 3 weeks ago) installed one and was not sure if my 850 watt power supply was enough to support 2 ATI 5850s. I don't think that is the issue either, but perhaps my PSU finally had enough...

Anyways, I am just sitting here trying to figure out what to do... Thankfully I can move my entire computer to a backup drive if need be, but I would like to avoid that.

Also, there are no backups or restore points... apparently that is not an automatically enabled feature on Win7.

Any help is appreciated.

A:Black Screen and Cursor after Win7 64bit Boot.

I'm a little surprised that it's in safe mode and still not responding. This may be a bit extreme, but have you tried to do a clean install? Granted, you'll lose whatever you're not able to backup, but it might help you rule out that it's not your video card...or support your theory.

When I boot regularly my screen just turns black prior to logging into windwos, i can hear the log on/off sounds.

It works in safemode with network drivers.

I ran antimalwarebytes and I had one infection by some "Rogueware.lnk".mp3 on my desktop which I removed with mab.

As of right now I'm running ESET online scan in safe mode and it found one infection "Win32/Opencandy".

I can assume that all hardware/drivers are working properly.

Why is my screen turning black all of a sudden when booting and how to get rid ofit?

Any help is welcome.

Thank you.

A quick system restore to a point before you were infected may do the trick ... however, getting into the habit of imaging your drive, is IMO, the number one step in any security policy ... its a lot easier to restore an image than it is to re-install the OS and all of your applications ... let us know how it comes out ...

This will show you how to do a System Restore to restore your Windows 7 system files to an earlier point in time. It's a way to undo system changes to your computer without affecting your personal user files, such as e‑mail, documents, or photos.
System Restore

This will show you how to create a system image (clone) backup of the entire hard drive or partition that Windows 7 is on, and any other selected drive or partition. You can use this image to be able to do a system image recovery to restore the hard drive or partition at boot back to the way it was at the time the backup image was created.

KSOD with cursor
I usually fix my computers (that I build) myself, but I'm appealing to the accumulated wisdom here because I'm at my wits end and trying to avoid reinstalling Windows from scratch and putting back software for a week... Needless to say I went through all the tutorials and how-tos on BSOD, KSOD, Windows won't boot and the like, especially on this forum.

My computer is running Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

My computer wouldn't come out of hibernation (happens once in a while), so I forced it shut and restarted it. Since then it won't boot:

Boot in Normal mode: Black screen with cursor. Keyboard active (num, caps work), no mouse
CTRL-ALT-DEL or any other key combination = nothing

I'm able to go into the Windows boot menu by pressing F8, so:

Safe Mode: same, with bigger cursor
Safe Mode w/ Networking: same
Safe Mode w/ Command Prompt: same
Last Known Good Configuration: same
Low resolution boot: same
Leaving the black screen on for some time: nothing

What I attenpted so far (to avoid unnecessary responses and waste of time):

- Went to the "Repair options" screen (from windows boot menu):
- Startup Repair (numerous times): Disn't find any problems
- System Restore: Could not find restore point (which is false, as I have some automatic restore points)
- System Image Recover: Couldn't find image

Hi guys,

I hope this is the right place and I'm alright to post this. I couldn't find another thread relating to the exact same problem, as they have hijackthis logs etc. whereas I cannot get onto my laptop to do anything at all.

I am running a Dell Studio 1555 with Windows 7. When I turn it on I can hear it boot, but everytime the screen just stays black. I cannot start it in safemode or do anything. It is just black.

I would greatly appreciate some advice as to what I can do, the only possible thing I can think is that the other day I used CC Cleaner and it did some things to the registry. Otherwise I have not downloaded anything or done anything that should suddenly make it stop working.

So, here is my story,
Yesterday I wanted to install graphics drivers form Dell website due to some problems that I had.
My laptop info: DELL_Intel Core i7-4500U CPU_RAM8GB_Windows 8.1 .
Graphics Dr.: Intel Graphics Family & AMD Radeon 8850M.
During the installation of a 'new' AMD Radeon 8867 - if I remember well - , my screen started to flash and then got black. My laptop was on with black screen and the cursor flashed. I turned it off, then back on , and it was the same story....nothing.. I pressed Shift+F8 and Nothing.
I can only access to BIOS (F2) or to BOOT MANAGER (F12)... Unfortunately no Safe Mode is an option. In fact, how is it possible to go to safe mode with a black screen on Windows 8??
I would appreciate any suggestions to fix the problem.

Whenever the Windows loadscreen passes the screen goes black and I can move a cursor around the screen.
I have had this happen before and fixed it with bootrec.exe but I can't seem to get that to work this time...
Startup repair says it cannot help - Safe mode has the exact same black screen problem.
I have done chkdsk and sfc scannow - Didn't fix it.
When I boot into Kaspersky Rescue from a USB drive it mentions that I need to shut down windows properly before continuing. I would like to do this but I can't.
I have tried changing the active partition on information in some of these other threads - It didn't seem to work.
All disks are healthy according to the DISKPART and Partition Wizard. I have done the HP hardware diagnostic scans and everything comes up fine.

I see that a lot of the advice on the threads is to do a fresh install - Is it really broken beyond repair at this point?

Does anyone have any other ways I can try and fix this problem?

I just built a new computer and I'm fairly certain all the components are compatible with each other, but I've never built a computer before.

All the components are brand new and anyway I built it, the first time I booted it; it ran my windows disc but it was scratched up so I went to clean it. Upon using the computer again, it kept saying 'BootMgr is missing, press ctrl-alt-delete to restart' - now this didn't change upon using or not using my windows disc and I could not enter bios screen.

I'm not using a usb keyboard - using one of those ones with the purple adapter.

Anyway I thought I may have plugged the sata cables into the hdd and optical drivers wrongly and have changed them about multiple times as well as removing the CMOS battery and tried clear the CMOS by touching the two pins.

All I get now is my screen flashes a quick image of the initial load screen and then straight to a black screen, everything in my PC seems to be running fine. Plus I've tried it with and without my graphics card and I get same issue.

What can I do?

A:New build - flashes load screen then black screen

Hi BC welcome to Techspot,

Firstly the "purple adapter" is a PS2 conenction.

There are many reasons as to why this error may occur and how to to sovle this issues but it sounds like you have tried to start a windows installaiton and becasue the disc was scratched it hasn't completed the it hence it comes up with the error "BootMgr mssing". The best solution here I think would be for you to get another Windows disc and try re-installing windows.

to get into the BIOS remove the windows disc from your PC and restart. when the PC is laoding up hit the F2 key and this should allow you to load the BIOS.
I wrote this thread if thsi is any help

hope this helps

Hey everyone,

Ive recently had this problem occur to a computer I am working on for a friend. I've moved my questioning to here after using combofix went disastrously wrong after being suggested to use it here.

Problem: I have a black screen (after windows load screen) that has an active mouse but with no capability of getting into the Windows Task Manager. I tried rebooting in VGA mode, all 3 safe modes with no luck

Here is a chain of events leading up to my problem

1) Cleaned up her hard drive because it was riddled with spy-ware and viruses (with Hijackthis, Ad aware, and house call)
2) Her computer was still having issues with a few spy ware programs, mainly Think-adz and the fact that her WHOLE desktop screen would invert 90 degrees to the left.
3) It was suggested that I run combo fix, follow the prompts and post a log for the person whom was helping me.
4) I installed and ran combo fix on the laptop, it never got past Step 1 (after waiting for 30+ minutes). I ran combo fix again and the same thing happened.
5) I rebooted the laptop and got a lsass.exe error.
6) I went into bootup with my XP CD and manually repaired lsass.exe with the friendly copy and rename commands
7) Currently I am here; I have a black screen (after windows load screen) that has an active mouse but with no capability of getting into the Windows Task Manager. I tried rebooting in VGA mode, all 3 safe modes with no luck

I bought a new computer in September, Dell N5050. The first problem occurred in November, I made prntScr:
This problem is solved: I thought it's a virus, I downloaded Advanced SystemCare (I had McAfee) this scanned my computer and found a four Trojan.

Then came a new problem.
I turn on computer, starting windows, black screen with a cursor about 8-9 minutes, log on and welcome screen loading about 5 seconds.
I turn on computer, starting windows, black screen with a cursor about 1-2 minutes, log on and welcome screen loading about 6-7 minutes.

I really don't know, what it depends on.
What is problem? How I can fix it?

PS: my native language isn't English. Sorry for mistakes.
PS: I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

A:Welcome screen load time or black screen with a cursor

First thing I'd do is getting rid of Advanced System Care. It's a system optimizer, and Windows 7 does not like optimizers. I'd bet that it is responsible of the slow start.

Second, ASC isn't an antivirus, or if it is I never heard of it. Which isn't a good sign. Install a good antivirus and run a full scan, I like Avira (my favourite, which is free and nuked all evil things I threw at it), but other people like Microsoft Security Essentials (again free, but less powerful than Avira).

Sounds like a corrupted file system, so try running chkdsk.

How to run System File Checker (SFC) or chkdsk from the Recovery ConsoleBoot your Vista or Windows 7 installation DVD
When you see "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD", press Enter
At the "Install Windows" screen, click on Repair your computer at lower left
At the System Recovery Options screen, make note of the drive letter assigned to your boot drive (normally C and click Next
At the Chose a Recovery Tool window, click on Command Prompt. You will be sitting at X:\Sources directory
Run SFC or chkdskIf you did not note the drive letter of your boot disk, you can enter bcdedit and look at the osdevice line to see what it is.
For sfc, type sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows and press Enter (use the letter from above)
For chkdsk, type chkdsk c: /r and press Enter (use the letter from above).

Let either run to completion undisturbed.

If you have any USB devices other than keyboard and mouse, disconnect them, and do a hard shutdown by pressing the power switch down until your computer switches off.

Wait half a minute or so and try booting up again.

If that doesn't work, are you able to boot into Safe Mode?

Failing that you could try a repair install.

One morning I woke up to realize my desktop is gone - nothing appears there but only My computer, My documents and recycle bin.
So I did "system restore".
After that, the computer restarted and wanted to run "check disk".
After the check disk was completed, the computer rebooted, but now - every time the computer finish loading windows - I get a black screen with nothing on it.
The black screen happens before I'm even asked to choose the computer user and enter its password.
What I tried;
1. Safe mode to install new video driver - safe mode doesn't work. I opened a new thread about this problem (since it's a problem I had for a long time).
2. Run check disk /r using recovery console - I got an error "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems". Need to mention the hard disk is actually accessible (using Hiren).
3. Install the video driver using Hiren - After the installation extracts its files, I get an error generated by the setup file - "an unknown error has occurred"
I'm using XP Pro SP3, Ge-force 250GTS, Hitachi 1000GB HDD.
Any other info needed? If so, please tell me and let me know how to retrieve it from the computer.
Please help.
Thank you

The other day when I booted up my computer, it got as far as the Windows screen with the bar scrolling at the bottom, and then, when I should have gotten the welcome screen, my lcd monitor went black, with a no signal notice and went into standby. I could not get into Windows, even in safe mode. I did a full restore, and everything seemed to be going well, until I installed the ATi video drivers. The same problem started again, black screen, no signal at the Windows screen. Windows seems to be loading, I can hear the hard drive clicking and the Windows start up music is heard and finishes after the black screen.

Things I have tried to resolve this:

Did a full Windows restore.
Reloaded the video drivers, old and new, numerous times.
Tried the ram sticks one at a time, didn't find a problem with them.
Ran Memtest, no errors.
Took video card out and reseated. Replugged vid card power wire.
Took the audio card out and reseated.
All voltages seem to be okay in the bios, fans and hardware are running, so I think the power supply is okay.
No overclocking.
Don't see any problems in the Bios.
Cooling seems to be okay. No dust in heatsinks.
Windows loads okay in VGA mode.
I have .net installed.
I don't see any obvious burned spots on the video card or motherboard.
Done Google searches and found many with the same problem, but nobody seemed to have a fix. Accept buy nVidia.
Searched TechSpot.

The only thing I can suggest, is to try another video card. If that works ok, then you know your video card has failed.

I've been using win7 for about 2 weeks and I didn't have much issues with it. Today when I turned on my laptop, everything was booting fine until the welcome screen where I enter my password to log in. It gives me a blank page but it's not loading at all, I see my mouse not to mention. It's working fine when I boot up from safe mode though, that's how I'm typing this :P.Anyways, I really need someone to help fix this.

I have looked through loads of other similar problems to mine but can't find an answer.

A couple of hours after a Windows update, I noticed my brand new laptop running very slow for something that should be a speed machine. I scanned it with antivirus, spybot, tuneup utilities, scandisk, and windows malicious removal tool. Nothing showed up!!

After a thorough scan disk effort everything seemed to work very well so I decided to make my acer restore disk just incase anything happened in the future so that i could boot form this dvd and be fine. Like a dumbass though I decided to move to a more comfortable spot which in turn managed to pull the power cable out of the laptop during the burn process. My battery was not in the machine so it killed the computer power. (pretty unbelievable when im reading this back but honestly this is what happened!!!)

Now Vista wont load up... It takes an age to get to username and password if ever, but then when i click to load it just goes to a black screen and nothing will show up. It stays like that for hours.

I just want to scrap everything on the system and start from scratch.

Its an acer computer and im pretty sure there is an option to restore laptop to factory settings but as i can't access windows i cant click on it to do this.

Ive used F8 and out of these options

Just today, I turned on my computer and got the blue screen of death, so I restarted my PC. Then a black screen came up saying "Windows could not start beacuse the following file is missing or corrupt : \windows\system32\config\system."

You can attempt to repair this file by putting the winxp cd in etc...

Now when i turn on my computer there is just a black screen showing, with nothing at all on it.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks very much for your help.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 and today I suddenly got a blue screen error message, the main message said "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA". After rebooting, I got the same message. Then on the next reboot I couldn't get to the login screen.

I used my Dell OS Recovery CD that I created to try and repair Windows XP. It asked for a place to partition/fragment Windows, and then it went through copying files etc.

After that, I tried to restart, I got the normal Dell Boot screen but then it went to a black screen, with only a flashing cursor in the top left hand corner.

I cannot do the Ctrl Alt F11 option to recover Windows XP, I can only either choose F2 or F12 at the initial boot screen.

Please help, I really do not know what to do!

What is the blue screen error message all about? I haven't installed any software or hardware so I do not see what might of caused the problem!

To start my story, firstly, whenever I started my Acer laptop (Windows 8.1), a Command window will pop up followed by an error message "Windows cannot find 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Search Extensions\Client.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."
I was worried and started looking online where I came across a website named Smartest Computing ( by Broni. There I seek help and Broni guided me step by step in resolving the issue. Few steps I have taken:
              1) MBAM
              2) MBAR
              3) AdwCleaner
              4) Rogue Killer
These 4 steps were carried out and the initial error message no longer pop up. The next step Broni guided me was to carry out a FarBar Recovery Scan Tool (64bit) on my laptop. After giving Broni the scan logs, he provided me with a fixlist.txt to be carried out by FRST64 through the fix button. The second time I attempted to run FRST, my Panda anti-virus blocked the application and it was removed from my laptop. I then re-downloaded FRST and switched off my anti-virus so that I am able to run the software.
After "fixing" through FRST, I noticed the fixlist.txt disappeared from my laptop and a restart was prompted. I agreed on... Read more

While I test Windows 8 Developer Preview, there was a disk checking and it was checking my Windows 7's HDD (I install Windows 7 and Windows 8 Dev. Prev. in different HDD). And when I configure back my BIOS priority to Windows 7's HDD, it was failed to start.

Then I followed the startup repair and it says that my HDD has errors. I wait around one hour and when i restart, I got black login screen.

I can't use "sfc /scannow" because it says that I have repairment waiting and I have to restart, but when I restart, there's nothing and I got my black logon screen.
I can't use system restore because it says that I don't have any restore point.
I don't want to lose any of my program. So, Clean install is the worst case.
I've waited the login screen to load around half hour and it shows nothing.
I can't use Safe Mode because it stucks while loading drivers.
I've tried Windows Memory Diag. and found nothing.

What else I can try?
I don't have Windows 7 branding, shutdown button, and accessibility button (like others do) on the bottom of my login screen. I just have my working pointer on the screen.

Hello, I'm having a problem with my computer. I have Windows Vista. I start It up and it starts up until the Microsoft Corporation green bar then I get a black screen without any cursor. I have tried all the safe modes *but all come up to this one file and stays there. I have tried Repair Your Computer, I used System Restore but it tells me that I have corrupt files on C: that need to be fixed I try to fix them but the window goes gray and nothing happens. I try to use System Repair I left it on for four hours and nothing happened. I only have the vista reinstallation disk which does not seem to work. I believe I have a problem with my OS which I think Its due to my pressing and holding the power button repeatedly due to the fact that my WLM (Windows Live Messenger) was freezing my computer and all other programs on it which led me to immediately switch off the computer. After I did this for the 20th supposedly I couldn't get back on to my Vista. Before this I kept getting a message on startup which I repeatedly ignored: Windows will check for corruption on file C: I always skipped this. I also haven't backed up my files so I can't do anything that will erase my data.*
I need help please with a guide on how to fix this problem. I am also on my iPod Touch which is the only thing giving me access to the Internet and strange enough I somehow got my iPod to charge through my computer.*

I this problem that sem to be coming up a lot on these forums but none of the fixes I have sen work for me. When I startup my computer stats as normal, then goes to the microsoft screen with the moving bar, then just a black screen with a cursor. But here is what happened beforehand. I turned on my computer and it went straight to CHKDSK and then started deleteing registry files and after that there was something about security protocols or something I cant remember. The computer went through the microsoft bit with the moving band then just a black screen with a cursor. Nothing else. Tried to restart, same thing ( with out the chkdsk this time) Tried safe mode, same thing. Ran full dell diagnostics, no problems. Used the F8 start up and tried startup repair, says there is no problems. Tried system restore, it said there are no restore points. Idont know what to do now. I dont want to lose my data. I have most of it backed up but not the last months worth. (recently go a new portable hard drive and for some reason I am yet to figure out it wont back up to that.) PLEASE help!! Before explaining how i got here, i will explain what exactly is happening. When I boot up my computer i see the logo then text saying Preparing Automatic Repair with a loading icon. Then i would get a black screen that would sometimes show a cursor that i can use with the black screen but most times just the black screen. Eventually this black screen ca give way to Diagnosing your PC loading screen that loops endlessly

Okay this started after I downloaded the anniversary edition for Windows 10, the first time i booted up the computer i had faced the AVG Watchdog initialization bug which prevented from accessing the laptop for the few weeks as tried looking for solutions forcing me to eventually uninstall AVG through Safe mode (the only way i managed to was through turning it off and on 3 times as every other way including holding F8 had not worked). After booting up the first time without issue after removing AVG and getting some things done, I turned it off without issue then i faced this new problem which is still plaguing me. I've looked up in forums for a solution but the closest i found was just reinstalling windows and losing everything, does anyone have a solution where i can still keep my data?

A:Can't access startup screen, boot up leads to black screen

Hi Helix935 and welcome to Tenforums.

If it was less than 10 days since this happened, you might have been able to go into Settings>Recovery and rollback from the Anniversary Update. But it's been too long now.

If it's data only that you're needing to save, you could boot the system to Kyhi's rescue media and use File Explorer to copy your data over to an external drive, then perform a clean install, (or reset or refresh from within safe mode).

You will need to reinstall your personal applications after the OS is working again though.

Hello, I had a very odd incident with my computer.

ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0
Ripjaws Gskill 2x4GB
Rosewill Green Series 630W
Also have a Cooler Master 212 EVO for the CPU
R9 270x Gigabyte OC Edition

So I was playing a game called Gnomoria, which to my knowledge shouldn't be very taxing on a computer... When suddenly my screen went brown with vertical lines! I could still hear the music playing but it seemed my PC was frozen. I decided to then restart the computer. As windows booted up, I got the chime that signals you were moments away from logging only to get a screen that is black. I can move the cursor but thats its... nothing else works. I then restarted my computer again with the same problem. Finally, I restarted the computer again but in safe mode with networking and I got that to work. Beyond this point I am not very experienced when it comes to computers, though I did build this rig myself. I'm just wondering what went wrong, and how can I start to fix this problem. I was not overclocking at all, at temps right before the Brown Screen looked cool with the CPU at 40C and the GPU around 35-40C. I also posted this under graphics problems mostly because this issue probably is GPU related. I'm running on 3.12, or 3.9 drivers. Im not sure which one but I am running on older ones mainly because I was having Blue Screen issues about 2 months ago which was fixed thanks to this forum. I'm just not sure where to go from here, any help would be appreciated.

A:Brown Screen and Vertical Lines - Black Screen on Boot

I forgot to mention that I did a system restore which brought it back 10 days earlier in which a version of direct X was installed. The system restore didn't work though and i was still welcomed with the black screen and only a mouse cursor. I have not changed any settings though recently.

Hello, I'll go ahead and start from the very beginning. Thanks in advance though for taking a look at my problem.

About a month ago, my computer would give me a few problems while booting up. I would start the computer, it would run through BIOS, run through the Windows loading screen, and after that it would run the CHKDSK to make sure my disks are fine. CHKDSK doesn't work, it just freezes right before checking the disks, so I restart and generally it will boot up. Most of the time it would boot up perfectly, but rarely would it go to the xp loading screen and then flicker as if it as going to go to the windows login screen but wouldn't. The screen would just stay black and I'd have to restart. Next time, generally it would work perfect.

So this brings me to the current day. After the windows xp loading screen, it goes black. The computer is on, but I don't see any activity for the HDD via the LED. SO i go into safe mode, i finally get CHKDSK to run, I had to really mess with some stuff to get that working. Windows says the volume is fine, and the only way I can boot my PC is in safe mode, but even that will freeze sometimes while loading some of the files.

Just to let you know I'm running Raid0, and this is my first time running it. I'm not sure if this symptom is a common problem if one of the disks are going out. Does anyone know whats going on? Could it be a virus that messed with a boot.ini or any startup stuff? also, is there anyw... Read more

Ok it all started when I ran Nod32 antivirus. I ran it because I had some viruses on my computer that I wanted to get rid of. After the scan there were 180 some detected objects that were quarantined or deleted. So then I restart my computer and after the windows xp logo there is just a black screen with no cursor. And after awhile the computer will just restart and try booting up again. I tried going into safe mode and safe mode with command prompt but I still get a black screen with no cursor. The last known good configuration doesn't work either. I'm pretty frustrated because I did nothing wrong. I am also having a feeling that nod32 might have quarantined some infected files that are essential for Windows Xp to boot. I also do not have any windows xp disks with me because I lost them a very long time ago. Is there anything I can do to fix my computer? Thanks.

Thanks for all providing valuable suggestions in my previous thread Win 7: Black screen on boot up, before login screen?

As I am picking the clean install option for my resolution, I am opening this new thread.

I reviewed the tutorials (Macrium) of this community. I found Macrium Reflect Free (Version: 6.0.753 (21 July 2015)) for download.

I downloaded/installed above Macrium to working PC. This version has an option to create Macrium Reflect rescue media on CD, DVD, or USB stick upon installing on working PC. I created a rescue media USB.

I created complete HDD image of my unbootable (Z580), before doing clean win 7 install. I am going to clean install Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) using my OEM KEY.

I posted the OEM DISKMAP in my previous thread Post # 90

I find System (d:\) 200 MB Windows_7 (OS) ( c:\) 653.44 GB & my Lenovo_data (e:\) 25.47 GB. Lenovo says, if I change the partition configuration, it will make built-in Lenovo recovery unusable.

I like the idea of adopting infrequent system changes (adding new programs etc) and frequent data changes (growing user documents) in image backup strategy. I mean taking system partition (d:\ + c:\) image back up as and when I add new programs and taking data partition (e:\) image backup periodically.

How do I re-structure my DISKMAP to have effective periodical image backup without disrupting built-in Lenovo recovery?

Are there any Windows 7 disk partition recommendation/guidelines?

I was cleaning around my laptop and it stared freezing up so I restarted, though it's not a common problem with my computer. When it restarted it came up with a no boot device screen so I tried it again and first a overheating screen came up but said the problem was now resolved, press enter to load setup. So I pressed enter and it brought up the startup screen but never completely loaded, stuck on the loading screen. Now every restart it comes up with the same. I've tried a couple of things like resetting boot to original settings, tried to make sure the hard drive didn't come unplugged but my hard drive is like glued on or something so I tried making sure it was connected but couldn't really check it. Tried a couple other things but nothing seems to be working, search online and youtube and still nothing, please help.

So everything has been working fine on my laptop until about 10:30PM EST tonight. I bought it new in August 2011.
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
CPU: Intel Core i7-2630QM @ 2.00 GHz
HD: 750 GB
It's always been a fine machine with NO problems.
However, last night there were Windows 7 updates that were installed and then restarted my computer. I had not gotten a chance to check exactly what they were though. About 10:30 this evening, flash crashed in Mozilla Firefox which is not that uncommon, and from there Firefox closed, and so did my Microsoft Word and Excel apps that were open. From there, my computer began to shut down and restart. When it went to restart, all it could do was go to the opening Lenovo screen which gives you the F2 (setup option) and F12 (multiboot menu option) as it typically does. Besides a thin strip at the top that appeared after about 30 secs that only displays moving static that eventually will just stick, that is where the boot process ends. No Windows 7 screen, and certainly no opportunity to boot into safe mode to check for any problems. The screen freezes and goes nowhere.
So basically, all I'm getting in terms of boot options are lenovo features, not windows 7 features, meaning it won't boot into windows 7 or windows 7 safe mode no matter what I try. The biggest problem here is that I have no windows 7 disc to even try to boot from my dvd drive.
Anybody have any suggestions on what the probl... Read more

How old is the laptop? It sounds like it's definitely a hardware problem. If it's still under warranty, I'd recommend sending it in. About your project, the only way to get that off of your computer is going to be to take apart the computer and plug the hard drive into another computer. You can buy an adapter (Laptop Hard-drive Bay to USB) for $20-40, they're smaller than a normal PC bay so you can't mount it inside a desktop computer.

Normally there's a Altfunction+key that switches the desktop from the LCD to a external monitor.. Look around on the top row of keys for a monitor symbol, then use the alternate function key with that key to switch to the monitor.

it seems that the computer fails to boot somehow, the welcome screen shows up as usual, then stays there for a long time, then the screen turns black (not turned off, just back).

I am using two screens, and I can move the mouse from one screen to the other with no problem, Its like it started up as normal, except but the desktop and windows explorer did not start at all (at least thats how it looks like)

I read somewhere else from a guy with a similar problem

link to that forum page:

but I have tried to plan a check on c: (like described on the other forum page), it went well, but it gave me no results

also tried to boot from a windows 7 ultimate disk both on 32-bit and 64-bit, but it did not help

and lastly, when I start it up again, it gave me an option to scan the machine and repair it automatically, and that to failed.

I'm out of options here

While attempting to restore a previous backup of my system (with Norton Ghost 15), I got an error, and the system rebooted. Upon reboot, I get the black screen of death with just the cursor instead of the usual login screen. I have tried the following thus far:
These all give me the black screen of death with movable cursor:boot in safe mode
boot in safe mode with networking
boot in safe mode with command prompt
last known good configuration

I did an initial system startup repair which went through and said it repaired it, rebooted, but no change.
I did a pre-boot diagnostic test - nothing
memory test - nothing
tried restoring from restore point, but it says I don't have any (LIES! BLASPHEMY!)
tried restoring from restore point on external disk - seemed okay, then failed.
chkdsk - found some stuff, fixed it, no change.
tried ctrl+alt+del on black screen of death - nothing
Now, I know that the hard drive itself is alright, that is, the information is still all there still. While I can't give you exact specs, I can tell you that I am on a Dell Studio XPS running Win7 home premium 64 bit. I'm at a loss as to what else to do. Despite being a black screen, with just a movable cursor, the system still appears to be running, as every few minutes, it will show the "thinking" cursor, where it shows the little circle next to the arrow. If anyone has any tips or suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.

I tried pressing the ESC seveal times after powering the device, but nothing happened (to load the safe mode). 4. When I do that, I can see the hard drive light comes on for a few seconds, then the screen lights, but it stays blank. I contine to press the two keys for 1-2 minutes, but nothing shows on the screen. Then when I release the windows and the B keys, the screen goes dark, and the power buttoon continues to light. The power goes off if I press the power button for several seconds. I tired this several times. 5. I tried step 4, but with a USB drive. The same happened. 6. Try this:

1. Reboot while holding down the F8 key.
2. Choose safe mode with networking.
3. Google for the latest driver for your video card.
4. Download and install the new driver after uninstalling the old one.
5. Reboot your computer.

Also, you could try the repair option two or three times.

I don't want to nag, but when you're up and running, turn system restore back on - you know it makes sense.

Here is that thread:

Upon reassembling & turning on power, I can hear fan, and power light is on, but I get a black screen.
Went back through disassembling again. Still black screen.
Tried taking out the battery and re-seating it.
Tried powering on with the adapter only.
Tried taking out the hard drive and CD drive and powering on.

Hey everyone, my Dell Inspirion Notebook has a problem that when I boot it up, I see the system begin, and it gives me the options for <F2> for Setup Options and <F12> for Boot Options. After this, it proceeds to a black screen with the single line blinking like in the Command Prompt. From here, the line keeps blinking and my operating system does not start up.

After rebooting several times, and running the startup diagnostics, my computer still hasn't gotten any better. I've tried to hit <F8> to enter safe mode, but my computer isn't allowing it.

Please help, I need this problem solved by tomorrow so I can submit papers for a class!

I use Win 8.1. After installing Win updates, the PC worked fine for the rest of the day. When it went to sleep at night, the screen was black when I tried to wake it up in the morning. The lights were blinking so the PC was apparently working. I searched the net on my laptop and I restarted the PC with shift/F8 and on button. It worked just fine for one day. The next night it went to sleep and the screen remained black in the morning. I can turn it off and on, the lights are blinking. I tried rebooting with shift/F8, F1 and F12. None of these worked. I would appreciate suggestions. Thanks, Chris

Pressing the windows logo sometimes will result inthe screen displaying for the second or so i press the logo and then goes black again. I would like the screen to continue display certaininly whilst i am using the laptop!

If you haven't already, hold the power button (about 5-10 seconds) until the machine shuts down and then you can turn it back on. You can also substitute this step with taking out the battery.

As of Nov 2015 I have a new Lenovo Z51. It has been working well, but a couple mths ago I'm finding that about 50% of the time when I power it on, it immediately goes to a black screen and I can't see/do anything. If I hit the F10 key for some reason I then get a couple inch blue stripe to the very right of the screen, but still can't see anything else so very frustrating. I then will power off/on and sometimes it takes a few times before I can see the monitor. I suspected a recent Windows patch, but when I uninstalled it I found the problem is still there. So, don't know if it is a Windows patch or ? is going on. The laptop has Windows 8.1 Pro OS. This is very frustrating! It's only a few mths old and is my main work PC! Is there a one yr warranty? Can I send it in? Not sure if this is hardware or software? Anyone else have this issue and a resolution? Thank you.

A:Screen goes black after powering on Lenovo Z51

Hi LABinz ,
How was it if you connect it to an external monitor ?
Try it also on safe mode as this would isolate probable hardware or software issue .
If the same non display black screen even on external monitor occur then it relates more of probable drivers or graphic card issue as it demands greater resolution than it is on safe mode.
Furthermore, turning on the machine using the novo button would display a menu outside windows and should show up on the laptop screen (to isolate LCD / LCD cable issue).
Update us how things go.

Hi, I am new here. First of all sorry for my bad English I know, maybe you heard this problem a lot but in my situation i couldn't fix this and it's driving me crazy. Here is my laptop specs: CPU Intel 4720HQ, Geforce GTX 960m 4GB, Ram 16GB, Display 4K, 1 TB HDD I bought this supercool (I really like it ) laptop about 9 month ago and everything were fine and great till now. About 3 weeks ago after a normal shutdown i noticed that when i star up my laptop, i have no screen and just black! I thought that it's a windows problem (my windows was so messy) and maybe it's time to do a clean installation again. I did it and installed the latest version of Win 10 (latest was 10 also) but my problem was there still! And the intersting part is, when i blindly restart windows (pushing Alt+F4 and one direction down and enter!) my screen comes back on restart! And yes, in Black Screen mode, when i plug an HDMI cable i have screen on external monitor but changin the screen mode (i mean double screen, extended and so, won't do anything!) I read every forums and every solution in last 3 weeks and nothing! I installed Win 8.1, i updated windows automaticly, i did clean installs many times, latest geforce drivers, latest Intel drives, disabled geforce from Bios, refreshed and updated Bios, disbaled Win10 fast boot and ect. I am really tired of this and just want to enjoy my beautiful laptop again  Anybody has a solution?!

1. I turned off by holding down the power button.

3. Held down the power button for 3 minutes. Plug lap back in.

You said you removed the HDD.With no HDD, the laptop should go to the setup screen of the BIOS.Thee you can set boot options. Hi Guys,
I have just spent hours and hours trying to find info and solution for my problem but I have had no luck whatsoever. I hope someone here can help me.

Ok this is the situation.
I have got a HP Laptop that is about a year a half old, its top of the range. I had my laptop in Hibernate mode the other night and the next afternoon I went to turn it back on there was a blank screen for a long time, all the lights on the laptop were on but nothing on the screen. I turned the laptop off and then back on again. and BOOM! The blue screen of death!
The computer starts up with the HP logo and then it pops up a screen saying that a previous attempt to start up had failed and it gave me options to start up in safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, start with the previous successfull start config, and normal start up. When i click ANY of these the windows logo pops up for about 3 seconds and then the blue screen, which appears for long enough for me to read 3 letters or numbers at a time. Then the computer restarts and we go through the whole process again.
This is what I have done in the hope of fixing it.
#I used my HP retore disks and it loaded disk 1 of 3 and it didnt ask for the other 2 disks which i thought was odd. But that made no differeance still the same start up process as explained above.

Win 7: Black screen on boot up, before login screen?

I find some interesting posting in this forum. Thanks for keeping this forum to help windows community. I like to pick up the brain of this forum to resolved the black screen issue. I am not sure, whether it caused by virus. I use Microsoft Security Essentials. I am not able to run this in command prompt.

I started my laptop this morning & login screen showed up. Once I entered my login credentials, I heard the sound that usually plays once a login is successful, but I ended up with a black screen. After this occurred, I had to hold down the power button to manually shut down the computer. Once I started it up again, I was prompted to do a system repair, which eventually ended up with all successful outcomes, but I now have a black screen with a cursor before the login screen now. I have no idea what caused this to happen. My laptop is a Lenovo Ideapad Model Z580 (500 GB HD, 6GB RAM).

I am not able to get into safe mode or any other mode, which all leads to a black screen described above.

Only able to use the "Repair Your computer" tools after pressing F8 during booting .

Under regular user login it provided Start Repair option. AS I pick this option, it did not find any issues.

Under Admin user login, it provided system recovery options. It is not picking up the recovery point created a while ago.

Hi Folks,

First time noob here, thanks in advance for your patience and expertise. It's been awhile, so if you need additional information, I'll be more than happy to get it for you in a timely manner. Again, thanks.

OMG! Some really peculiar things have been happening, in addition to your average no-boot situation. Here's the story:

First, some specs:

HP a1410n
Came with XP, upgraded to Win 7 (64 bit, I think?)
nVidia graphic card
Ram, I believe is 4 GB (I upgraded)
Processor: Athlon 64 (V) 3800+ 2.4 GHz
HD: 200 GB, I have an old one slaved in, and I have an external drive as well

A couple weeks ago (got discouraged and busy at the same time, so this is my first real attempt at fixing it), I was doing some things on the computer with my mom, when I unplugged the wireless keyboard from the USB. Big mistake, because I actually have done that before, and had to reboot, and baby it in order to get squared away and back to original running condition.

Anyway, as soon as I pulled that USB, the screen froze. Usually I just reboot, but this time, it didn't happen. So, I tried unplugging everything and doing the whole reboot thing, to no avail.

Today, I spoke with a friend, who suggested I do a disk boot. I had the disk and tried it.

The weirdest thing happened - first, the computer wouldn't recognize the keyboard (wired by now), and I unplugged, restarted, plugged in, restarted, etc. I was finally able to get to the "Boot from cd/dvd?" an... Read more

I need help urgently. I have my finals tomorrow for my AP english class and all my files were saved on this laptop. Everytime I boot my laptop, it does not go past the windows 7 loading screen. It just shows hp and press f11 for system recovery. The thing is, when I press f8, or f11 , to system recover or to go to safe mode, the laptop goes to the black screen with the blinking white cursor at the top left. I can enter the system diagnostics screen and I checked everything on there. It says the battery, all hard drive, and memory is ok. But I can't friggin system recover or get past the hp screen. Is there any commands or anything I can enter to factory reset the laptop? I can enter the command prompt screen because I have a disc, but the disc does not allow for factory reset. It only allows system restoring to an earlier date, and I've tried every single of the restore points. Each one still gave me the black screen with white cursor at top left.

It is just shocking that the warranty is 1 year and the laptop has issues after less that two years. I had a Lenovo before and it lasted 8years without problems...So don't understand how the newer models don't make it to a couple of years?? Lenovo Autralia or New Zealand can't help me because they can't get parts and don't honour any international warranties. My laptop swithches on, the fan runs, the power light blinks and the keyboard lights up, but the screen stays black. A few times after switching it on and off it worked, but as soon as I switched it off and on after that it does the same thing. Ultimately it stopped showing any display at all. I have connected it to another monitor, but that also remains black. Lenovo states they are continually working on making customer service better, but I have wasted hours of my time trying to reach anyone who can help. It would be really helpful to have a direct email address for international support. Thank youLooking forward to your response

YOGA 900-13ISK2 SEPN: 80UEBIOS: 2UCN6WW16 GB RAM / I7-6560 / WIN 10 x64 Home    I got my new Yoga 900 few weeks ago and ever since it's been randomly freezing. The laptop is with this problem from day one and without any additional software installed. There's no error message or anything, it just freeze or flickering and than freezes completely without a BSOD and the only way to use it again is to shut it off and turn it back on. The freeze looks strange: black screen, any sounds playing would either stop or repeat indefinitely and the fan noise high. The LED backlight is on, but completely black display. I had to shut down my computer by pressing the power key and then restarting again. There is no clear error massage in Event log: ?Audit events have been dropped by the transport. 0? and ?Unexpected shutdown?. For some reason, it's much more frequent on battery power and almost non-existant on AC power and High Performance Power Options. But whit this solution the battery life is highly impacted and the fan noise is high, which makes no sense for this notebook class!!!!Action taken:Windows 10 Home ? My lenovo Yoga 2 went into the black screen of death (cursor moving and visible but not able to do anything) about ten seconds after I got a warning saying my memory was low. I tried rebooting it to Safety Mode by holding down the power button until it turned off, then powering up while holding Shift+F8. It showed the lenovo logo, but then went back to black, and when I tried it a second time nothing happened. I don't have the ability to take the battery out, so I've now unplugged it and have devices hooked up to the USBs and charging to drain the battery--I've read that's one way to do it. How do I fix this??
