Windows 7 missing "Create New Folder" option

Q: Windows 7 missing "Create New Folder" option

I went to create a new folder under documents and won't, then tried it elsewhere (desktop etc) and it shows me a shortcut to create a new folder, and wants me to browse to it. I don't know where to make it browse to, to even see if it works or not. Anyone know here?
Thanks, Linda

A: Windows 7 missing "Create New Folder" option

The issue should be caused by damaged or incorrect registry key entry. Please check the following registry value:

1. Click Start, type regedit in Search Bar, and then click regedit in the Programs list.
Note: If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.

2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

3. Please check if the value for (Default) is: {D969A300-E7FF-11d0-A93B-00A0C90F2719}

I am having a peculiar problem on my Windows 7 64-bit, which I noticed this week. Within the "Videos" folder, if I create a folder called "temp", I am not able to create any sub-folder within it through the right click menu. Picture attached. Now the funny thing is, if I create a sub-folder within it (thru linux since my laptop is dual boot), I can see everything in linux (files and folders). If I go back to Windows, the sub-folder is not visible. Only files are visible.

If I change the name of the main folder from "temp" to anything else, the sub-folders are then visible and so it the menu option.

This is not happening anywhere else on the disk, only within "Videos/temp". I have other folders within "Videos" and they behave fine.

Any thoughts?

A:No "Create new folder" option for a specific folder within Videos

Interesting, I don't even get New in the first context menu drop down for any folder created under Videos. This is on Windows 10, so there is something going on there (7, 8 and 10) that Microsoft thinks is important or useful.

How can I create an option in "Send To" when I right-click a file and will send the file to a subfolder of the same name? So if I have a file called Test.txt I want to right click it and "Send To">Test folder.

I am looking for a way to have it automatically create the subfolder of whatever name the file is and move the file there. Seems like this should be possible, but I haven't found a solution.

EDIT: I think I found a program to do this: Files2Folder. I will update if it works.

I have accidentally set the folder of my program file to music folder, when I wanted to change it back there wasn't a "Customize this Folder" option available. No I am very annoyed by this. Please teach me how to change it back to default.

A:"Customize folder" option missing from folder view

Yea, I've had this problem too when making folders. For seemingly no reason at all they just lose their customize tab.

If you really want it back, just make another folder named "Program Files" in another directory, then move all the files into it (Make sure you get hidden ones too) and then delete the old program files folder and move the new one into the old directory on the C drive or wherever you had it before.

Make sure the old folder is empty though and that you don't miss anything!

Hi, new to this forum.
Windows live mail in windows 7 home preminum 64 bit has left the option of creating a new contact group from its drop down list. Here is what I have done to correct problem. Going to c:\users\uername\contacts and than right clicking on blank white space and selecting customize folder\customize and clicking drop down arrow. On the drop down list there is no "contacts" option. This procedure came from a several forums that I have visited. So the next step I did was to make sure that windows live mail was my default, and it was. I than tried and made windows contact my default. The results did not help. Been working on this off and on for four days. Sure could use some help.

For no apparent reason, the function "include in library" in Windows Explorer (right click on a folder to include it in a library) is not longer there. It used to be. But now when I right click on a folder in Windows Explorer, it's simply not there anymore. Does anybody know how to restore it?
Or alternatively: does anybody know how to add music files to Playlists in Windows Mediaplayer without having to use libraries (like in previous versions of Windows)?

You might have noticed that the old 'Add Legacy Hardware' option seems to be missing. I tend to use this quite a bit whenever I need to add in a Loopback adapter or some piece of hardware that is not quite installing correctly. With that said, thankfully, you can still manually launch the 'Add Legacy Hardware' Control Panel applet by using hdwwiz.exe. **

I can right click and create a new folder in the same window with the right mouse button flyout... but I want to make a new folder by simply clicking on the "New Folder" button at the top of the window.

Can you please help me figure out why this function is not [usually] working??

About a week after Clean Installing Windows 10 from an upgraded version on my laptop, I noticed that i wasn't able to Create a New Folder anywhere, from Desktop to File Explorer Directories. Nothing! Even when i try clicking the "New Folder" Button in the Ribbon or pressing Ctrl+Shift+N it still won't work. In the Context Menu (Right Click), I can't find the "New" Button too. Is this normal for Windows 10 after being installed? Do i have to install something (maybe an update) for the "New" to appear in the Context Menu?

A:Is it normal if i can't create "New Folder" in Windows 10?

Looks like a permission issue. Check the permissions for the desktop folder. In Windows Explorer right click on the desktop folder, select properties and there go to the security tab. You should have write permission for that folder.

An error occurred while attempting to create the directory "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Autodesk Shared\Materials\Textures\Environments\SunAndSky\Presets\5". While the problem could of been security issues it is not, I am freely able to create folders in this directory, the issue is that I can't create any folder at any location named "5", the folder is either instantly deleted or renamed "New Folder". I tried using the cmd to solve the issue but it doesn't work, the command tells me that the folder is created however it does not show itself, when attempting to open it via cmd it's telling me the folder does not exist. I am unable to create a shortcut in the startup folder on my Dell Optiplex 780. Every time I try, I get the following error, "Windows cannot create a shortcut here. Do you want to place the shortcut on the desktop instead?" No I do not want it on the desktop, I want the program to start with Windows. I tried, dragging the shortcut to the startup folder, tried copying and pasting the shortcut into the folder, that only opens it with applications that are already in the startup folder. I tried dragging the exe and selecting "create shortcut here." none of which worked. All results that I found on Google that people said that worked. None of them worked for me. All the results were about 'all users/startup' but I am only dealing with my own user and dragging from folder in start menu to the startup folder which none of the results covered.

Any ideas?

Sylveon am not sure on this one but I know in 10 (I stand to be corrected) that one can add apps to run at start up - I don't know how to actually do because I always keep my start up items to the very minimum and have no need to do that. For the record the more you have running at start up will slow down the boot and do you really want thta??

Also I think when you load softwares a lot will ask if you want them to run at start up so without knowing what you want to add cannot comment on that.

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?

I would try a scan with MalwareBytes Antimalware. A couple of years ago I had something similar where I could not delete any files using Explorer. MBAM picked up the registry hack and fixed it.

The free version works just fine for scanning. A "Threat Scan" should be enough to pick if off if it's a Registry nuisance.

So, I was playing a game called Battlefield 2, and it was a little laggy, it was pissing me off so I restarted my computer. I don't know if this screwed something up, but instead of re-booting up, my computer told me that a file in the system 32 folder or around there (It's called system, I think) was corrupted or missing.
Whoop dee doo. I've had like this happen way too much, and I'm incredibly tired of re-formating. I do NOT want to re-format and re-install it, PLEASE, GOD, NO!

So, it told me to put in my windows CD and push "R" to repair it. So, I did, but that gives me a nice command line, and I don't exactly know what to do.

I tried restarted, and now without any error it just brings me to the blue windows XP screen before the computer goes to your desktop, but it just stays there without actually..going to my desktop and letting everything function. So, what do I do now? Is there any way to replace this file, or am I gonna have to re-format?

OK I know about "Send To" option where you send a copy of an item to it. The problem is just that, it's a copy; the original item stays in place.

I?d like to know if it?s possible to create a "Move To" option where the items are actually moved instead of copied. I know about the Move To/Copy To folder options in Windows Explorer.

When I click on "tools" on the menu bar in any folder that I am exploring and subsequently click on "folder options" I notice that the "view" tab is completely missing. The only tab I have access to is "file types"

This creates a serious problem when dealing with hidden folders that were hidden prior to me having knowledge of this "view" feature being absent.

What are my options to restore this "view" tab so that I can view the hidden files that I need access to?

A:"View Tab" in "Folder Options" missing

Other than a system restore, I don't know how to restore the view tab. I can tell you how to enable the hidden files and folders from the registry.
Start> Run> type: regedit and hit OK. Navigate to:
Click on Advanced folder in the left pane and look for Hidden in the right panel. Set the value to 1 to show and 2 to hide.
If not there, create DWORD value with Value name: Hidden and set the value as above.

Edit: Forgot to add, you need to restart computer for settings to be changed.

Have Vista Home Premium on 2 computers. Working with music on desktop and want to see "bitrate" on the tracks in the music folder but it isn't listed as a detail option. It is on my laptop. Any suggestions on how to get it on the desktop?

A:Lost "bitrate" as detail folder option

Hi ManorMusic and welcome to Vista Forums

This problem occurs when the folder template is set incorrectly. Here is the Sample Music folder set as Documents. You can see that the items available for the columns in Detail view do not include Bit rate.

To correct this, right click on a blank section and select Customize This Folder...

Select the Customize tab, if not already selected. In the first drop down box under Use this folder type as a template: select Music Details and click OK.

Notice that the items available for the columns in Detail view now include Bit rate. Also notice that the toolbar now includes the Play all button, whereas previously it didn't.

Right *deep breath*

The first thing that went wrong with my computer was to do with Mcafee On access scan. A week or so ago the little "V" sign stopped appaering in the system tray. Also, when I start the computer the red box that says "welcome to Mcafee" and which version you're running and stuff stopped appearing. I accessed the on access scan through program files and it told me that the on access scanner was enabled and working so I wasn't too fussed that it didn't appear.

Now, yesterday my computer went weird. The "run" option on the start menu disappeared and so did the "Turn Off Computer" red button. Both of them just disappeared. Task manager was also unavailable. When I pressed Ctrl, Alt and delete a box just popped up and said something like "task manager has been disabled by your administrator". I ran Virus Scan, Ad Aware, Spware blaster and Spybot Search and destroy. They all found various stuff on my computer and I got rid of it. After I did that Task Manager worked again, Which was good. However the "turn off computer" and "run" were still missing from the start menu. Well I googled around a bit and realised this guy had the same problem:

He managed to resolve it by logging off and running a program called ewido. I downloaded the trial of ewido and ran it, following his instructions. It found loads of stuff but when I'd quarantined... Read more

Hi, my computer crashed a couple hours ago out of nowhere and when it restarted itself I got the dreaded "BOOTMGR is missing" message. I'm running Windows Vista 32-bit. This problem is simly driving me crazy.

here is the problem as direct as possible...

I have an Asus K8V mobo(standard)

On this board there is 2 controller that can use the SATA interface.

One is branded VIA and work flawesly and the other one is from Promise. (376 here)

I do have many hard disks and they all have the 1,5 GB/s jumper on, they all work perfectly on the Via controller...

But i have more then 2 sata device wich mean i need to run the promise controller in IDE mode.. or whatever its called (none-raid)

1 DVD burner sata, 1 HDD sata are on the Via controller. (what ever is plugged there work)

I now need to use the Promise controller in IDE MODE but there is no way i can do this since i dont have the option "operating mode : ide mode" in my advenced option from the bios...

It looks like i'm lock in raid mode. Sometime i just wish RAID never existed in the PC world.

I'm really about to give up on that since i must have wasted a considerable amount of time on that..

I do have the bios 1007 , v.2.54 from asus My Promise chip is identified as PDC203376.

Pls dont tell me i need driver in windows cause i know i need, and since im under winxp64 it might not work at all in the end but i'm not there yet since i dont even see the HDD in my BOOT DEVICE PREORITY list form the bios..

Thks, hope you guys have some clues for me, i'm starting to wonder if downgrading the bios, or if the K8v none deluxe is the problem.

First things first, thanks to all who can help.....

I need to programmatically make some adjustments to the Internet Explorer security settings. Most of these settings I have found but there are a few I have not been able to get a clear exact location for in the registry. I will be using a .BAT file to make
the adjustments on 100+ PCs.

Here is what I am looking for.....

Under the "Internet  Properties" found in control panel, under the "Privacy" tab there is an "Advanced" option button. When I click on it I get an "Advance Privacy Settings" options box. On it are several settings.
The first setting, "Override automatic cookie handling" needs to be checked in order to access the other options. I can do that by adjusting the DWord value of "PrivacyAdvanced" under the "Internet Settings" key in the registry,
"HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet settings", to be specific.

What I have not been able to find are the registry entries for the "First-party Cookies" "Accept, Block, or Prompt" options, the "Third-party Cookies" "Accept, Block, or Prompt" options, and the "Always allow
session cookies" check box. Please see picture below....

I have seen references to the following settings as being where those options exist, but nothing that explains ... Read more

just a screenshot, hopefully this gives a better explanation than my wording:

I'm unable to see the option in the drop down address bar either. I've been forced to open Desktop using "Show The Desktop" option.

Is there a way I can get the desktop option in the Hierarchy Tree somehow ?

"Install" option is missing from the context menu for *.inf files.
Google gives many results, but all considering the same problem for Win95/98/2000, and not for XP which is my OS.

It is probably a registry problem, since it is the same case on my both computers with same software, and different hardware.
I've tried everything I knew, but can't move a bit.

I have one more problem with context menu; WinRAR "extract" options are present, but not working for *.rar files. They do work for other archives though. This is not such a big problem, but I am mentioning it beacause there is a possibility that both are connected.

I desperatly need to install an *.inf driver. No way around. I NEED to get back "INstall" option in the context menu for *.inf file drivers.

I am knowledgeable in computers but not an expert by any means. That means I should be able to understand explanations w/o too much work on the part of you expert people. I know how painful it is to bring someone -w/o too much computer experience- up to speed, even on the simplest things.

SITUATION: Person ?A? bought a computer and barely learning the basics of it (Win 7 home?)

Person A = PA

PA logs-on using her password. PA wants to keep some files secret. The problem is other users know her password (this cannot be changed), so essentially they have the same access to EVERYTHING she has on the machine.
So the challenge is to find a way for her to have a place where she can keep private information, files etc, even though others have access to her password.

I found a way, simply by creating a Folder and make it ?invisible? (properties = hidden)? and that sort of works? except that if someone knows about computers they could easily go to Folder Properties and allow to see ?hidden files? and that would be bad.

So, is it possible via PERMISSIONS to device a way in which even if someone were able to change the properties of the Folder and thus see the folder and files in it?. To LOCK IT up so that no one would be able to open the folder, even if visible?

The file was created with Microsoft Works 4.5. The extension "wdb" exists in the Folder Options list, with the association of "Microsoft Works 4.5 Database." The actual name of the file is: CGS' CD&Records Collection.

"New" in Folder Options apparently refers to a new extension, not a file.

Hello to all!

I'm new to this forum and obviously i'm not sure if this is the right place for starting and posting this thread.

Since i'm pritty desperate i'm going to explain the best i can what is really happening and how it all started:

since a few days ago i was noticing that a few files, specifically mp3 files are missing from my music collection. I managed to recover the missing ones and transfer the whole collection to a new drive without issues. Today i've found that some recently downloaded files, including several mp3's where missing again from the new HDD. I started to look around the internet abut the problem and what could be the reasons that causes my files to "vanish" from my HDD. As i was reading, i stoped at one thread in other's site forums that related to some "security" and "user privileges" issues in Win 7. I then tried to "fix" the problem but noticed that the files where still missing.

Next thing i tried was looking for the missing files in some AppData subfolder named something like "virtual backup" or something. That was the last time i saw the "user" folder and the last time y accessed my local drive. Turned out the folder just dissapeared from the screen after a short "access denied" dialog box (error). After that, all of my desktop icons dissapeared and my c: drive went like it's empty and can't be accessed, still i can see the drive lying there and every time i run a virus ... Read more

A:"Repair your computer" option using F8 key is missing

Having System Recovery Options on F8 Advanced Boot Options is not dependent upon having the System Reserved partition, as it's file is actually on C. You can try to rewrite it's link to F8 by running Startup Repair - Run up to 3 Separate Times after making sure C is the Active partition: Partition - Mark as Active. This is why we use Startup Repair x3 instead of only bootrec commands since it includes rewriting the F8 WinRE link.

You'd need to create System Reserved during the install, by deleting all partitions using the Drive Options in Steps 7 and 8 of Clean Install Windows 7.

To create it now is a PITA, but can be done. There is absolutely no reason to do this other than as an experiment to see if WinRE link can be restored to F8 when other methods fail:

Back up a System Image of C first. Your files should always be backed up externallly anyway.

Shrink C from the left by 200mb using Partition Wizard boot disk: Partition Wizard Resize Partition Video Help.

Create a Primary partition there using Partition Wizard Create Partition Video Help,

Mark Partition Active, Label it System Reserved.

Then boot into the Win7 installer or System Repair Disk to run Startup Repair - Run up to 3 Separate Times

If it doesn't move the System boot files as signified by the System flag to the new System Reserved partition, then unhide System Files in Control Panel>Folder Options>View and drag them there from C manually, run the 3 Startup Repairs again.

Okay, here's the rundown as best as I can remember it...

Several years ago (around 10, if I'm approximating), I purchased a slew of components and built my first computer from scratch. Since that time I have run through four power supplies. It seems as though some other component is causing these power supply failures. This is not the purpose of this post, however (but some back story).

Now, I am not the most technically savvy person in the world, and after the second failure, I took the computer to a "professional". While I don't know what he did in its entirety, I did notice a change that confused me. However, as I had decided to be an end user from this point forward and not a techie person, I didn't question it. The change... I could access the user account "Documents" folder from the "My Computer" window but not from within the "Documents and Settings" folder under the root directory.

In other words, if I were to double-click the "My Computer" icon, I would be given the usual options of hard disk drives and CD drives as well as the "Shared Documents" folder and the "_Username_ Documents" folder for the user logged in. (That would by Ahr Neely's Documents for the Ahr Neely user, and as there was only every one user created on the computer it was the only documents folder that should have existed.)

I recently found a "Shared" folder in MY DOWNLOADS folder which blinks between being selectable and dissapering. When I manage to double click it, it shows an innumberable number of zip folder for all kinds of programs and files that you can imagine. I obviously did not put this there.

Also, my P2P program (bearshare) started turning itself on randomly, and would perpetually turn back on once exited.

I have ran virus scans (avast antivirus), spyware scans (spybot S&D) and deleted all of the files inside of the MY DOWNLOADS folder. I've even managed to delete the "Shared" folder and empty recycle bin but it always comes back.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be or how to get rid of it? If not do you know anywhere that would? All help is appreciated!

This is a PC which has it's Downloads User subfolder linked to Storage E, which seems functional except that now no .exe can be run without receiving the following error:

Strange that it refers to 7zip which is not the default program here for .zip files and the Firefox .exe being run in screenie is not a .zip; stranger still the error persists even when 7zip is uninstalled.

If you move the .exe to the root it will run fine, causing me to believe that either corruption or a recent change has caused installer to look for temp file on same partition as .exe.

Has a recent Update caused installer to look for temp folder on same partition? This could be a real problem for those who've linked User folders to storage partitions. Anyone else seen this?

I bought two exact duplicate models of hard disks. I set up Vista Ultimate on one of my systems. I used Acronis True Image 10 to clone the operating disk to the factory-new, never-used, same model disk as a backup drive in the event the first disk failed. I put in the clone to be sure it runs; but, I get the error mentioned in the title of this thread.

Now, if the second disk is supposed to be a clone of the first, why does this happen and how can I fix it?

I'm not married to Acronis for this job so I would use any disk cloning tool that makes a sector-for-sector copy. I use Norton Ghost 2003 for making sector-for-sector raw image (forensic) copies of PATA drives; but, these are SATA drives and Ghost 2003 simply sits there like Tarbaby and he don't say nuttin' to no SATA drive.

I have such a mess going I am making another post to avoid confusion ( mostly in me ) I will try to explain.

I have a ssd for the os and then a hd for "D" storage,

Lets say my user name is "Harry" and I wanted to move some user/harry folders to the "D" drive,
I wanted to place the moved user folders into a folder of their own so I made in "D" a folder lets say I called "Dobby".

What I now thought I did was go to harry down to "my pictures" right click it then clicked properties,
then clicked location then clicked move, I then found "D" and found the "Dobby" folder in "D" clicked on "Dobby" and then select folder, I then click it to move and all files,

Now I have a two part problem.
"Dobby" folder is gone from "D" replaced with a second folder called "my pictures".
"my pictures" folder is gone from the user/harry folders list, how do I get it back?
Next problem,
When I go into "D" I have two "my pictures" folders one empty and when I click properties on it and look at the sharing tab it's name is "my pictures".

When I click properties on the other folder named "my pictures" in "D" and go to the shared tab it's name is "Dobby"?

So how do I get "my pictures" folder back in the list on user/harry?
Why did the "dobby" folder rename itself as "my ... Read more

I was going to save 'My Documents' to my flash drive but when I right-click on the folder, the 'send to' option is gone! It's there for other files on my desktop. What happened? How can I save my files to the flash drive without it?

On my other dell laptop when I simply click on the Start Menu and want to see my programs.. there is no "All Programs" button!! I can't figure out why this would happen, I haven't been messing around in the registry, and just to check I compared this computer to the laptop and their registries for start menu are identical. It isn't spyware, or not that I am aware of, already having run several checks with several different programs. And last but not least, lol, don't google this and give me the most popular couple of sites with 'fixes'.. cause I've tried em all. Anybody got any ideas? Thanks.

I have just discovered that the"Open in New Tab" option does not appear for some drop down entries in IE9.
In the Favorites drop down if I right click on a folder there is an option "Open in New Window"
If I hold the pointer over the folder entry and then right click on one of the content entries then in some cases I see "Open in New Tab" but in some cases not, and in some cases I see both the new window and new tab options.
Would welcome any help or info.

Have attached some screen shots

If you want to open a page in a new tab, simply click on the item with the mouse wheel.

You could also try disabling the Google toolbar and trying again.

Hmm...yet again I come here to get something resolved.

Ok, when you hit start, there is the options on the right side (run, search, my comp etc...), and I seem to have lost the Search thing. I click on it and nothing happens...I click again nothing happens...I reboot, click again nothing happens.... Yet if I go into My Computer, I can search there....but I want to search where it says Search!!

A:"Search" option missing...

Do you know when you first noticed that?

I suspect a windows update may of been either bad or have a virus in it, I got things missing off Win XP SP2 also. I dunno what caused it or nothing.

I got a topic also about my problems and it might be similiar to yours.

Usually when a usb device is connected I can disconnect in two ways, the "safely remove hardware" in the sys tray and the "eject" option in the right click context menu in My Computer. It works with my MP3 player, phone, thumbdrive whatever. I connected an IBM external drive to a co workers computer and altho it shows up in the sys tray, the Eject option doesn't show up as I would expect it.
In Disk Management it doesn't look any different. Why would this be? What are the parameters needed to have the Eject option?

I was wondering something. I think we all know the old-standard trick of placing an image in the root of a folder with the "folder.jpg" extension in order to generate cover art for it. I see that this is still a feature that has carried over into Windows 10.

I was wondering how long this has been a feature that's come standard in Windows? I believe I can trace it back to Windows XP, but not sure if it was something you could do before that. The reason I ask is that I'm going to be setting up a frontend using this method, and I'm trying to determine if this is a relatively new feature that Microsoft might drop in the future or if it's always been part of Windows functionality (IE: meaning it's likely to be kept around).

A:A Question About The "folder.jpg" Folder Option

Folder.jpg was introduced with XP. See

Is it possible to create a second "Public" folder on a network drive? I have a large hard drive connected to another computer on the network. My Vista laptop can access this entire drive (it is shared). The reason for wanting to do this is that my new TV will only let me access media files that are in the public folder on the laptop and there is only the one public folder, and no way is there enough room on that computer for all my photos, videos and music. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, all!

I gave my flash drive to someone to give me some files, but since the files were copied to my flash drive, I have been unable to create new folders, copy files into, or save files on my flash drive. I checked all the settings I know of and have not found anything disabled on my flash drive.

I am using windows XP, and a Cruzer 2 GB Micro flash drive.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A:"unable to create new folder"

Right-click the drive and see if it is Read-only.

See if there is a "Read-Only" mode switch on the side.

I know this may have been discussed here before, so bare with me.

I would like to create a My Documents folder with the same properties as in Windows XP. The reason for this is so I can have multiple machines setup to use an UNC path shared across a network.

I like the new Documents feature in Vista, but want to leave it alone for users to do with what they like.

A:Would Like to create a "My Documents" Folder

Why not just make a newly created "documents" folder shared across the network- all network users will be able to read/modify the data within.

A:"Shared" Folder I Did Not Create

I would uninstall Bearshare first, then follow the steps here.

Sounds like your system has become a host for the P2P world - that's what it gets you, I guess.

I am trying to rebuild by search index because my computer won't let me arrange items using the "Arrange By" option... However, when I try and load my indexing options to rebuild the index it will sit there and say "Waiting to receive indexing status". If I click the "Advanced" button it will freeze... I also receive an icon and loading display problem SEE PIC#1. Also when I click on "My Computer" it sometimes will sit there searching and it won't load. SEE PIC#2

I have tried the following:
1. Restarting the "Windows Search" service multiple times at different boots.
2. Deleting the files contained in the folder "C:\Windows\System32\config\TxR\".
3. Stopping the "Windows Search" service then I opened up "regedit". I went to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSearch, SetupCompletedSuccessfully" I changed the value from a 0 to a 1. Then I rebooted my PC. I then went back to the same key and changed it back to a 0 and rebooted my PC again.
4. Turning the "indexing service" on and off from the "Turn Windows Features on or off" menu.
5. Microsoft Fixit Indexing Troubleshooter
6. Sfc /scannow
7. Tried this hotfix
8. Tried another user account and creating a new user account

The "Idle-time Full System Scan" in Norton 360 v4 is bogging down my computer constantly, and there is no option to turn it off in "Automatic Tasks".

I contacted Norton and (after several attempts to find someone at Norton who could understand what I just said above and getting "hung-up" on over Norton chat. Inexcusable!!!) I was able to get a hold of a technician who told me that Norton intentionally removed this option "for security reasons, because they didn't want people turning it off".

The problem is, people will then be forced to turn it off by turning off ALL scheduled tasks (under "Settings/Scheduling/Schedule:Manual Schedule") and that is an even worse security problem than the relatively small one that would be created by turning off idle-time full system scanning.

Once the system has completed a full system scan, all files are on-access scanned anyway, so running a full system scan every 3-4 days is rather silly and extremely annoying--especially, because it will continue to try to run every time the system is idle if you cancel it.

A warning urging the user to not turn off idle-time full system scans without fully understanding the risks, and after explaining the risks, would be VERY preferable. Or at least the option to run the full system scans when the system is idle on a certain day of the month/week! The schedule for idle-time full system scans really needs to be separate from other tasks. In fact, t... Read more
