Ok, so i deleted the 'desktop' folder by accident from the My Documents window (or just above my documents folder)...

Now the 'Desktop icon' at the top of the folder list shows a different set of shortcuts/folders (incl. RecycleBin, Network etc etc)... the now 'yellow' desktop folder that is under the 'user' is messed up.

I've attached 2 screen shots because i'm sure my explanation is poor. Anyway, this is driving me crazy - can't figure it out. I've been messing around with it for hours - at one point i had 'desktop' with about 15 'desktop' subfolders......

help! please!
Thanks

A:Deleted 'Desktop' folder by accident....

this my be overly obvious but, have you gone into the recycle bin and checked if the folder is still there? if it is, all you need to do is right click on it and select restore.

There was another thread about this, but the solution wasn't clearly explained. A user provided the OP with a Desktop.ink file, and nothing was said about what to do with the file that was provided. I'm having the same problem, where I deleted the file by accident and now there is no live tile for the desktop anywhere on the start screen, not even in the All Apps category. I can't find it in the Windows Store either. What do I do? Here is a screenshot of the folder that I *think* held the original desktop file.

I have a 2TB external hard drive and a 1TB external hard drive.
I got a new 2TB internal hard drive and was installing Windows on it.
On the screen where it showed the connected drives, I stupidly forgot the 2 external drives were still connected. I thought somehow it was breaking up the new 2TB internal drive into 3 separate partitions. I clicked on the two external drives and deleted the partitions because I thought it would merge them. I DID NOT format luckily.
I am in the middle of running the Analyzer using TestDisk on the 2TB external. Since it is a 2TB hard drive, it is analyzing about 10% of the disk per day. So I guess it will take 10 days to finish. Small price to pay if I can recover all the data on these drives. One has all our home movies and photos and the other has all our scanned documents in PDF format. Sigh.
I am wondering if I am doing this the right way with TestDisk? Is there a faster way? When I deleted the partitions, the process took less than a second. The drives were partitioned to used 100% of the drive space. I read the page TestDisk Step By Step but still not sure if there isn't an easier way for my particular blunder. Nothing should be corrupted. Just deleted.
Thank you!

A:Deleted Partitions By Accident Please Help

Yes it should be faster. I thought there were two levels to the restore deleted partitions and only the deeper level involves scanning the surface for old deleted partitions.

Hello, I recently purchased Dell XPS 8700 that came with a 2tb harddive formatted with GPT. The computer came with Windows 8, and I wanted to downgrade to Windows 7. However the windows installer wouldn't install on any of the current partitions, so I deleted every partition with gParted and proceeded to install Windows 7 successfully onto the one giant partition. Since I deleted all the GPT partition information (Idiotically), I am unable to make more partitions and dual boot.

So my questions are: Is my harddrive as of right now in MBR or GPT? And how would I add the GPT partitions back, as in the primary and secondary GPT headers?

Edit: I am attempting to dual boot with Xubuntu 14.04 and Windows 7 Professional, both 64bit and the computer has the UEFI, I think. Am I better off using MBR or GPT to dual boot? I only want two OS's and a shared data partition.

A:Deleted all the GPT Partitions by accident

Quote:
Since I deleted all the GPT partition information (Idiotically), I am unable to make more partitions and dual boot.

Deleting all GPT partitions is a recommended step to downgrade "Windows 8" as "Windows 7" is known to not much liking GPT based UEFI boot mode. Although "Win 7" 64 bit edition may boot from a GPT disk, i prefer MBR partitioning especially in case of dual booting with Linux. The only mistake you made here is not to partition the disk at the time of install. Fortunately you can split the single large "C" partition to two or three small partitions with the help of "Partition Wizard" free edition.
Download link : Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition.
What you need to do is first shrink/resize "C" and create one or more new partitions using the free space.

There is a backup copy in C:\Windows\System32\dllcache

most of the time it is compressed in this folder.

Here is a copy of it from my XP installation (uncompressed)
See attached
You will need a XP install CD and use recovery environment to copy the file to the proper place, or use an Ubuntu boot CD to do it.

Here is an article on using a Ubuntu CD to copy data off an unbootable windows PC, one could also use it to copy a file to a Windows folder.

Or what else do I need to do?  When I go to the icons in the bottom right corner of my toolbar and select to have the bluetooth icon show icons and notifications, it says this notification icon is not currently active. It will be shown the next time it becomes active.  I have even restarted my computer and it doesn't seem to work.

Hey Guys I screwed up as follows:

I was fooling around with my graphics drivers and accidentally deleted them. A screen popped up to reboot the computer. It rebooted.

Now whenever I restart my computer, first a microsoft screen appears, then it appears to load but I have no on-screen visual as i get a monitor error message (Not Optimum Mode, Recommended 1920x1200, 60Hz), I am therefore unable to download and install any updated drivers.

What Can I do to restore my Drivers or at least get a visual to Re-install them?

I'm running Windows Vista, and one of the newer NVidia Graphics Cards.

A:Deleted Graphics Drivers By Accident

I believe you'd need to boot into safe mode in order to get the resolution down, or at least that's the easiest way I can think of. Boot into safe mode and allow as much as possible, try installing your drivers from there.

I just deleted an email in Outlook 2007 by accident & now I cant find it in any of my trash folders?

But for some reason it doesnt look like my trash folders are synced up with my godaddy account?

But I looked for the email on the godaddy server & it wasnt in my inbox on their cloud mail client either?

A:Just deleted an email by accident, now I cant find it?

I don't know anything about godaddy, but do they have a spam folder? Chances are that it isn't there either, otherwise your client wouldn't have received it. Do you have the client set to leave the messages on godaddy? If so, either the client or godaddy is haywire. If in neither place, I would say that it is gone, unless you use a file recovery program to search for it.

It didn't. So now those three folders lost their little special-folder images (as well as the icons for C:, D: etc under 'My Computer', and my VS is still the same. I'm annoyed!. Can anyone help?

Hi toybird

Sorry for the delay in getting a reply to you (been busy). Any luck yet finding a solution?

If not, try these for a quick repair
1) System Restore
2) Uninstall StyleXP
3) Run a Registry Cleaner (CCleaner is effective).
4) Reinstall StypeXP

. . . and anytime you have unexpected system behavior, run some malware scans to rule out unexpected visitors causing havor with your system files.
_____________

To try System Restore:
1) Boot your computer into Safe Mode (start tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up, and select "Safe Mode" from the Boot Menu).
2) Logon as "Administrator".
3) Click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore, and select a restore point from before trouble started.

Try CCleaner to clean up
1) You can download CCleaner here --- http://www.download.com/CCleaner/300...-10315544.html
2) Run the "Cleaner" functions to clean up temp files & other accumulating unnecessary files. Then run the "Issues" functions to clear up problems in the Registry. Run the "Issues" functions until CCleaner reports "no issues found."

Best of luck

I know I should have restored. Now it has the desktop as its routing (I can't think what else to call it). I can now log on if the error message that says "microsoft cannot log on" stays on the screen long enough to click OK. If the screen does not stay the computer trys to boot up (I guess) but will not do anything until the screen times out and I press a key; than the "microsoft cannot log on" error message will come up and I click OK. Than a screen appears that shows the Owner and I click on it and every thing works all right. I would apprciate any help. Let me know if I need to explain more.

Guys I took a hard drive out of a macbook pro and placed it into a external enclosure. I connected it to my pc running vista and I was copying the files from the macbook pro onto my pc and by accident I hit the delete button.

The folder that I deleted is still in the recycle bin, well at least I can see it but the size of it is over 2 gb. I tried to just restore it but that is not working. Thing is I do not need the entire folder just maybe 100 mb of some files that are inside which is just pdf and documents. Any idea on what I can do? I have tried several different types of software and most will not work because I am guessing the macbook pro hard drive is a raw drive.

User came in with a receiving email issue and to make a long story short I found that his inbox and all subfolders including sent, junk ect. are subfolders of the trash folder.(deleted Items) I tried to back up, clean(glary utils) and reinstall but the backup reordered the folders the way they were. I will uninstall again and hand build the folders and subs if need be but I was hoping someone here might know a fix before I spend 2 or more hours creating and moving from imported folders (home based company with 33000+ emails)

Any ideas appreciated.

Also noteworthy is that Norton failed after the hearbleed patch and had to be completely removed and reinstalled. the reinstallation of Norton was AFTER trying to repair Outlook.

Thanks

I need some help here.

I suck with computers, as evidenced by the fact that I just deleted all my music from my hard drive. Its gone.

But its still on my ipod. So I need to get it back from the iPod to the computer. I do not wish for iTunes to synchronize because Im afraid it will clear the music off of my iPod.

How should I get my music back onto my hard drive?

Now my itunes seems to not be working properly. I have iphone 3gs and so when I synced it I don't see the music files under my device or my ringtones. It also said that they can't find my music when I tried to download them into my iphone and every time I put new music or new ringtones in my iphone, the ringtones/music that I have gets deleted. For example: I have 200 songs in my iphone but when I want to put just one song in it, The rest of the 200 songs gets deleted and now I only have that one song. And so now every time I add music to my iphone I would have to add the songs back into the iphone. I would also have to do it to ringtones too and I'd have to manually add them in because if I don't it would never be put into the iphone. So yeah, I'm not too good with itunes because it's too complicated and this is the first time I've ever had a iphone so I'm really confused how to use itunes. Oh and my library music files doesn't automatically update when I add new music so I would have to do the same as I did with my iphone. I'd have to delete, add the files again, sync and so on...

My itunes is up to date, my folders aren't hidden because my music folder and ringtone folder are under my library but not under my device.

I uninstalled itunes and reinstalled but its still the same.

I don't know what to do!! Help please??

Thanks

I have a folder called Temp on an internal drive labeled B: The properties of this folder is set to "General Items", and when I view the folder through Explorer (showing Details) I get the expected headings Name, Date modified, Type, Size, etc...

However, when I through any app (TextPad, WordPad, Chrome, IrfanView-Save for Web, etc) choose Save As... and navigate to that B:\Temp folder, it shows up as a music folder! With headings Name, #, Title, Contributing artists, Album, etc.

Most annoying!

Does anyone have any hints about how to change this so that it always shows up as a "General Items" type of folder?

A:Folder thinks it is a music folder... how do I change that?

Hello OppfinnarJocke,

This is most likely due to Automatic Folder Type Discovery. "Automatic Folder Type Discovery" is when Windows will automatically change the folder template of a folder to match the file type of the last file added or saved in the folder. For example, if your folder contains music files and you add a picture file, then Windows may change the folder template and view to the "Picture" template to match the new picture file. Basically just what you did.

If you like, you can use the tutorial below to set a specific template (steps 2 to 6) to be the default for all folders to disable Automatic Folder Type Discovery. Afterwards, you will still be able to set folder views and templates how you like though, but without Automatic Folder Type Discovery changing them for you.

Folder Template - Default

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi to all.
Apologies if this has been posted in the wrong section.
Ok, so my problem is:
I play all of my music on iTunes, when im sent songs they get saved in my music file in my documents and also saved on Windows Media Player. I thought that the songs in windows media player were irrelevant, so like a fool i deleted the windows media playlists.
As it happens all my songs have gone, not in the recycle bin and arent restored after i completed a system restore...
Any suggestions people?

Deleted both my music folders, one in libraries, under music folder, the other in favorites. Nothing I googled seems to deal with deleting and restoring both. I do not have a restore point, or backup, just a factory restore usb. How can I restore both folders?.

Henry

A:Deleted both my music folders

Right click the Favorites listing and click on Restore Favorites links,
Right the Libraries listing and click on Restore default libraries.
You can also Click the start button and click on your User name listed near the top and right click the My Music folder and click on Restore previous version and see if any restore points are listed,
You might see if your music is in the My Music folder first,
Deleting a Library or under Favorites (Public Music) does not delete the files just the shortcuts to the My Music folder,
Right click My Music and click on Add to Library/ Music.

I deleted all my music acidently is there any way to recover it.      Dum  i know.

A:wIndows 10 i deleted all my music in the recycle bin.

If you only deleted them and emptied the Recycle Bin, you can recover them with a data recovery software like Recuva. You see, Windows doesn't actually delete files when you empty the Recycle Bin, they just "disappear" from the computer but are still recoverable by third party software. After a very long time though, those deleted files get overwritten by new files when the hard drive gets filled up and are never seen again.

Hello,

Looking to you for help after causing a huge problem for myself. I have been having problems for months with Visualbee, Conduit and Adnxs issues. I am NOT entirely comfortable with these topics but have had success in the past with Spybot. So I tried that and had not luck so I ended up on your site off of a search for Visual bee and followed advice given to another. Yes I realize now you do NOT recommend this, ugh.

I used the adwcleaner and it worked great. I got rid of a bunch of problems but was still only having Adnxs issues with pop ups on Mozilla. So I went back to searching and ended up back on your site and followed those insturctions given to someone else with using security check and roquekiller. Adnxs was still there so I used there next step and used Combofix.

It ran for 11 hours and when the laptop restarted the screen was balck and everthing was gone. A window popped up for a system restore that went back acouple days and some things came back. However all pictures and music is gone. I am sick. I did find them by searching on the name of a grouping of pictures. It seems that they are all there but the names have been changed with a .vir at the end of them all. It seems that they are marked as a virus and in quarentine? I could one by one go erase the .vir added to each photo but that could take years.( I was able to sucessfully do this several pictures though, thats something!)

So now I am on your actual site and see everywhere ... Read more

A:Tried removing Malware myself and have deleted pictures and music

I am also worried if there is a time frame to get this fixed. Should I not be using the computer? How soon will all my Photos and Music stay in quarentine? Am I running a risk of them permanently deleting?

Hi everyone, I recently transferred all of my iTunes music to a NAS drive to reduce the overhead on my PC hard disk, and this morning I accidentally deleted all of the files - I thought that the iTunes library was just pointing to all of the music in the old C: location, as every tune had an exclamation mark next to it, so I deleted them, but they have now disappeared off of my NAS box (Western Digital My Book World).

They are not in my Recycle Bin on the desktop, where could they be so that I can restore them back?

Good day to all.

Just a point that got me confused was when I went to rip the CD with windows media player it went to the private music folder not my music folder on C Drive,Even I selected options in the WMP to change where to save it said That I could not do so.

My question is how do I change the direction of the ripped music to my music folder??
Many Thanks.

Sorry should have said Public not Private Folder

I don't use WMP to rip CD's. I use the free Audiograbber program. I haven't tested it in Win 10 but it works OK in Win 8.1 so it probably is Win 10 compatible.

Went into options in the WMP and tried to change the location of the music,But in the option box it stated ''Rip Music to this location''C:\user\public\music.
Now when I try to change that location to my music folder I get another box on screen stating ''The selected folder is not available.Verify that you have the correct permission to add files to this folder.

I recently performed a clean install of Vista on my laptop. Before doing this I copied my music folder with around 13,000+ files in it to another computer and then copied it back to my laptop after the install. Before whenever I would open the folder it always displayed the files sorted by Date. I've managed to get it to do this one time since the install. Now it will not display the date of each file at all. I'm running Google Desktop Index and hoping that this will help.

Any suggestions or know why this is happening?

hi there. recently i had an issue with my parents computer than ended with me having to wipe out and restore the entire system. ever since i've been taking more measures with my own computer to try and prevent similar problems that led to that. we lost all our files on that computer so it makes me nervous about having a problem with this computer, because i have almost 30 gb of music in my music folder. i use itunes and an ipod on windows xp.

i was wondering if anybody knew of a good way to back up these files. i know i can write the songs to discs through itunes, but that would take a box full of cds at least. then i thought about an external usb drive for a backup, but those cost at least $150 dollars which i definitely can't afford.

is there any way to compress my music folder so i can get all the files on one disc or is that not possible? any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks so much

A:backing up my music folder?

While compressing files you can reduce the size of them, but not in such way that it can be put on one or two disks. However, there is a simpler alternative, you can create a partition on your harddisk where you store your music. In case the OS has problems and needs to be reinstalled, you can reformat the main partition, while the other (where you stored your music) remains intact. This tutorial explains more about harddisk partitions. This tutorial explains how to create/change harddisk partitions.

More importantly, if I go back to a previous itunes library that has the missing songs, can I save them in folders on the desktop, and put back my current library and then add the music from the desktop?

Hi, I have a desktop and a laptop and I have my MP3's sync'ed via LapLink. My problem is that under my desktop I have a different user account name "Dave" whereas my laptop has a user account of "David" So...the link on the start menu "My Music" goes to "C:\Documents and Settings\Dave\My Documents\My Music" on the desktop and "C:\Documents and Settings\David\My Documents\My Music" on the laptop. For matters too involved to discuss here, I need my MP3's to be on identically named folders. I figured the best was is to put the "My Music" folder in the root of my C: drive of both computers and that works beautifully with one exception. Now when I click on the "My Music" icon on my start menu it still goes to the old subdirectory and not the new "C:\My Music" directory. How can I tell the "My Music" link to go to a different directory other than the one XP defaults me to? Is there a place in the registry that will change this link address? I tried to change the properties of the icon/link itself but to no avail.

Thanks in advance,
Dave W.

Trying to install iTunes and I get an eror message that it can't set up iTunes folder in the default My Documents/My Music folder.

It turns out that I DO have that folder (and I even have music in it that I can use), but the iTunes setup program can't seem to find it. iTunes recommends using TweakUI to change the "Special Folder" for My Music...but it turns out that the My Music folder doesn't exist in the pulldown list inside TweakUI either.

So...is there a way to formally restore that folder so that either TweakUI or iTunes can recognize it?

My Win 7 Home Premium laptop used to have a folder called 'My Music' that was located in the root of my user folder, at the same level as the 'My Documents' folder but, for various reasons, I wanted to place 'My Music' inside the 'My Documents' folder.

However, I actually ended up moving all my music files and subfolders into a new folder called 'My New Music Folder' within 'My Documents'. All my attempts to rename 'My New Music Folder' as 'My Music' are rejected, even though I have deleted the original 'My Music' folder.

When I try the rename, I am told that 'My Music' already exists (despite it being deleted). I am offered the opportunity to merge the new version of the folder with the old version but when I agree I am told the folder does NOT exist! I am then offered the chance to create 'My Music' but when I agree I am told it is 'not accessible' and 'access is denied'! Rebooting the laptop doesn't help.

None of this makes any sense to me. Can anyone offer a solution?

David

A:Win 7 won't let me rename a folder to 'My Music'

Its not as simple as deleting and making a new folder, win 7 uses junction points to point at files so it is possible for example to move user folders to different locations and even different drives as long as the new folder location is included in the relevant library, there is a tutorial for it although it talks about moving all user folders you should get the idea

Hi:
I am moving my Documents , Pictures, and Music folders associated with the start menu on the right side of start menu (under the user pix) to a seperate partition on the hard drive so that it will be easier to back up these files monthly, and also allow me to create an image disk of the os without all the data files being included.

Going very smoothly except that I stupidly deleted the music folder after I had moved the files, and now when I click the music tab on the start menu, it no longer directs to where the music files have been moved. The Pictures and Documents tabs work correctly...that is, when I click those tabs on the start menu, I am taken to their new location just fine.

My question is, is there some way to re-create that original Music folder which , when I right-click properties, has the tab for LOCATION which will then allow me to change its location settings so that the Music tab on the start menu can find it ? Seems to be a special type of folder, and if I just create a new one, it does not include the Location tab under properties.

I should add that I can create a shortcut and pin it to the start menu, but if possible, I'd like to use the original Music tab on the right side of start menu.
Thanks for the help.

I am missing the Music folder from my laptop. I first noticed when I tried to access it from the start menu and nothing happened when I clicked on it. There is only a general tab when I go into properties, and it is empty (No location, no files, etc). I then tried to access the Music folder under users and it is missing. I tried searching for the Music folder using the search from the start menu, and a blank page icon shows up, but nothing happens when I click on it. Is there a way to create a new Music folder that is linked to the start menu, similar to my Pictures, Documents, etc?

A:Missing Music Folder

Hello Jules, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Do you have a C:\Users\user-name\Music folder at that location?

If not, then using OPTION TWO in the tutorial below may be able to help restore your Music folder.

Hope this helps,

Can anyone suggest why on my Windows XP the Music Folder that contains ALL my mp3s has lost its cleff folder icon?

The Picture & Video folders both have their icons but the Music one is just a normal default folder?...

Just a little question for anyone that may know....

A:Solved: Music Folder

Download the free Tweak UI.

Click "Repair" in the left pane.

In the right pane, click on the pull-down and choose "Repair My Music Icon".

Click the "Repair Now" button.

Click "OK" to close the Tweak UI dialog box.

Ok so i would really like to get rid of the C: folder inside the music folder. I have no idea what its doing there and its making Windows Media Player and iTunes get every music file from the C: drive. That means all the sounds from my games and such get imported. It would be alot easier if i could just unassociate the C: drive in my Music folder. Can anyone help?

A:C drive in the Music folder?

How did the C: get into the music folder? Probably by some drag and drop that went wrong - bad habit those drag and drops. Now you have to move it back where it belongs which is "Computer".

All my music and video files are in subfolders within a main folder.
Main folder and subfolders are set to display thumbnails.
When I open the main folder---[before opening any file]-- a pop-up appears:

> > > The program you are trying to run requires a current Indeo codec.
> > > To obtain a current driver that is compatible with this version of
> > > Windows, please contact the manufacturer at
> > > http://indeo.ligos.com.

Why does this appear even though I havent opened any files yet.
Is it because of the 'thumnail' setting?
