Q: "Insufficient disk space to fix the security descriptors data stream."

Hi everybody, I've made a lot of progress with this external drive, but I seem to be stuck now.

-------------------------------------------------

Unidentified problem with 3TB external drive (USB 3.0 enclosure) that the computer suddenly started treating as RAW. Spent the last two weeks running CHKDSK /r repeatedly. Slowly got through many hundreds of indexing errors. Now I get as far as "verifying security descriptors (stage 3 of 5)," but I seem to have hit a wall here...

CHKDSK won?t go any further because there is "Insufficient disk space to fix the security descriptors data stream."

Microsoft?s advice (Error Message:) is of no help to me. They say to ?delete some unneeded files from the disk and try again,? which doesn?t help me since I can?t get the drive to mount or stay mounted long enough to copy the files onto a different drive.

-------------------------------------------------

The drive behaves differently each times I power up its enclosure, but it is usually one of these things:

Drive doesn't mount.
Drive mounts after a few minutes. I see a generic "Local Disk L:" in Windows Explorer but, when I try to explore its folders, the computer takes about 15 minutes trying to read it (I can see the progress bar moving slowly across the top of the screen), and then says that "The parameter is incorrect." Drive disappears from Windows Explorer.
Drive mounts after a few minutes. I see the full Volume name that I originally gave it, and can see all of the folders/subfolders. However, I cannot open or copy any files from the drive ? on the few occasions I've gotten this far, I tried to copy some files from the drive to a different drive (thinking that I could free up some space and maybe get further along in the CHKDSK process). I hit "Copy" on a single folder on the bad drive, and then hit ?Paste? on my target drive. The computer spent an incredibly long time "calculating" the file names/sizes. Hours later, there was a new error message: An unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file. . . . Error 0x800704fD: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.? I clicked on "Try Again," and got the following error message: An error has occurred. The destination you have specified does not exist . . . The drive had already dismounted.
---------------------------------------------

Sometimes, after the drive mounts, I run CHKDSK but it says that the drive is RAW.

Then I?ll power-cycle the enclosure and try again, and CHKDSK says that the drive is NTFS and run its course... until I get to the "Insufficient disk space to fix the security descriptors data stream" message. Then I'm back at the command prompt, and I must power-cycle the enclosure before I can continue.

Sometimes, when the drive finally mounts, I now see a frame pop up, asking if I want to ?scan and fix? the drive. I tried it once but the system hanged and the drive eventually dismounted. Now I just click on "Continue without scanning."

---------------------------------------------

I?ve tried plugging the drive into internal bays inside two (2) different desktops (each running Win 7 (x64) and UEFI), but it is never recognized by either computer?s BIOS, Windows Explorer or ?Disk Management.? My only success, thus far, has been via the external USB 3.0 enclosure.

--------------------------------------
This is my dilemma. The folders/files all appear to be on the drive, but I can?t get the drive to stay mounted long enough to copy anything onto a new drive in order to free up enough space for CHKDSK to finish.

What can I do here? Any thoughts or advice? Would using a different CHKDSK option make any difference? Is there any way to get the computer to use C: drive space to complete whatever tasks it can't complete on the external drive? Thanks!!

I used Creative Lab's Wave Studio for years with a single problem.

I loaded it onto my sister's computor and the first time I tried to save a file, I got an error message saying:

"There is insufficient disk space to save (file name)."

She had several gigs of open space so I just chalked it up to something funky of her PC.

A few weeks later, my HD crashed, so I installed a new one and re-loaded my software. When I fired up my Wave Studio (version 4.02), I got the same message. Now I had roughly 75 GIGS of free space.

I'm not a newcomer to the world of software troubleshooting, but this one has me stumped.

Any help would go a long way to restoring my sanity.

I recently reformatted my windows xp home comp. I have two external 250 GB Maxtor 5000xt USB drives attached as Fand G. After getting everything started back up, I discoverd that my drive letters had swapped. No big deal. The drive that is now labeld G: has a lot of programs and data that i need to access. I can view files on this comp, listen to mp3's etc... but I run into problems when trying to copy files from G to write to other drives on the comp. Sometimes I'm successful and other times the computer really hangs up and gives write fail errors. When i run chkdsk, it gets to stage three and gives the following message, "unable to read the security descriptors data stream error"
Check disk has effectively not been successful therefore i cannot defrag the drive. I suspect that the drive is highly fragmented but windows says that i cannot defrag until after chkdsk runs.
Any help will be appreciated.

Hi, new user here.

Well, bought an used notebook with some car diagnostics software on, and a hardware USB-interface.
The laptop though, runs a Windows 7 x64 Enterprise, which i believe is a "copy". The machine got a OEM Windows 7 x64 Pro sticker underneath.
Did try the downgrade trick, mentioned allover this forum, but for some reason it does not work.
I had to uninstall SP1, as I didn't have a SP1 DVD ready on hand.

When running the compabilityscan, I get the following error; (roughly translated from Danish)

"There is not sufficient discspace in partition (G . There must be at least 15 MB free space."

Note: Partition G: is a partition on 100 MB created by the Windows installation. Theres ~200 gig free on my SSD, which also held the G:, when the installation is started.

Any clues what to do from here?

Thanks.

My HDD shows 21GB+ free yet MS Word will not save and says "Insufficient memory. Not enough disc space". Norton AV and Trend Micro scans detected no virus, Add-Aware and Spybot found nothing either.

Had a quick read about [email protected] or [email protected] on Symantec's site and their fix warns that I may have to re-install Word afterwards.

Is there any way I can confirm this is the problem before I try their removal tool?

I have Word 2002 btw, any help will be appreciated,

TIA

I have almost 2 Gb of music on my computer that I'd hate to lose. And hate to have to rebuy or redownload too.

So what I'm wondering is... can I back up all that music on 3-4 700mb disks as a data disk instead of making a 70 minute music disk?

I have Sonic RecordNow that I use for music burning and data backup. I'm just wondering if it is possible to back up 1/3 of it in a folder as a data disk, and do the same for the other parts.

Possible? Would this work?

It would make much more sense to have 4 disks that although you could not PLAY them in a CD player as the songs would be stored in a folder on it, to just be able to copy them out onto another computer instead of making 20+ audio CD's.

Would my idea work? Help me out guys...

Hello,

Burned jpg's to CD, but when I viewed them using ACDSee, the bottom half of most of the pictures are black - with a message that the data stream is corrupt.

I recall seeing that some of them were like this before I burned them to the CD, but many more of them are now affected.

Would it be better to save them in a different format? Could it be because they were put through DCEnhancer before being saved, or because I edited them through ACDSee?

This is a real pain as half of my pictures are useless.

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Bye,
Penny.

Here's the story. I bought this new Samsung 840 250GB SSD.
I first did a clean install of windows 7 on it and it worked fine. Windows installed without much problem and everything. Then something didn't look right about the partitions. It looked like because I had all my HDDs connected while installing windows on the SSD the windows created the system reserve on the old HDD rather than the SSD. So I went back and decided to start from scratch with all the HDDs except for the SSD disconnected. I tried reinstalling windows on it but this time it didn't work. I tried formatting the SSD and it just gave me an error saying windows couldn't install on a GPT disk. I went into bios, made sure the PC was booting from the UEFI DVD drive and it still kept giving me the same error.

So I then booted up my old HDD. I tried formatting my SSD and now I can't delete the partition!
This is what my disk set up looks like:

If I click "extend volume" on the "New Volume (G" disk, it says "there is not enough space on the disk(s) to complete this operation".
If I try to create a "new simple volume" on the "unallocated" partition, it says the same...

Have I destroyed my new SSD now?! I just want it to work like a new clean disk...

This morning when I attempted to use my computer, any application (IE, OE, everything) I tried to start gave an error message (paraphrasing) “Insufficient resources exist to complete the requested task.” I thought a reboot was in order and when attempting that got “you do not have permission to shut down this computer” or something similar.

After unplugging and rebooting everything seems normal, but I’m going to run AV, anti-spyware and Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool.

Event log shows an error at the same time “the server was unable to allocate from the system nonpaged pool because the pool was empty”. Server? I’m not networked to a server….I’m sure it means something else, but what?

Recent software changes: Deleting MS Antispyware due to inability to upgrade to their new Beta 2 Defender (something do to with GDI, which I tried to fix by following info on the MS site), and downloading some critical updates from MS.

I’ve done searches on the errors and the answers don’t apply. I’ll probably revert my HD with an application called GoBack if the scans don’t find anything but thought you people might know what caused this.

Win2K is my OS.

I'll be checking for responses as I can't get response notices due to my ISP.

I just bought a Samsung 840 and tried to use their data migration software with a standard USB 2.0 external enclosure (it didn't come with the USB cable it's supposed to). It gave me the attached results. Does anyone know why it thinks 405GB (or 437 with the additional 32GB it requires) is greater than 465? (Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.)

A:Samsung Data Migration (SSD) - "not enough space"

It's likely looking at the disc size, not the space used. That's typical of most software for that purpose.

I'm hoping this is a simple fix. I'm trying to fix my elderly uncle's Asus laptop. System Repair pops up and fails. I booted to command prompt and found out it may be hard disk space. 400+ GB Hard drive (only one drive) and there's only 1024kb Free. I'm thinking that could be the issue. Hardware was checked out at the computer store and is fine. But they were going to charge him $200 to fix this failure to boot up issue. I told him to let me try first. Can I possible "compact" this drive from the command prompt screen? Note: I have no other Win 7 systems, so can't create a disk, and I have no original disks. Also, no restore point has ever been set, and there are no partitions on the drive. A:"Startup repair" failing - hard disk space issue? Normally, I'd tell you to download a program or two to examine what's using the space or to clean up unnecessary files. But with only 1024 kb of space, you probably can't install anything. So--try this: Start button, search box, type in "disk cleanup" and then poke the disk cleanup listing that shows up. Let it clean up the drive and report back with how much space you then have. You'll see an option in disc cleanup where it asks if you want to clean up system files as well. Say yes. It should calculate how much space it will recover. Let it run to completion. Might take a few minutes. Then check your recycle bin to see if it's empty. Report back with available space. 9 more replies Answer Match 88.62% I have a C: drive which I want to increase in size. The used space on my hard disk drive is approximately 5GB higher than the total of all the files on it. (It's always been around 5GB, every time I've seen it). The only thing I can do is to reformat the disk, and it will be fine for a few months, and then the same amount will "disappear" again. Disk cleanup, ccleaner, etc don't help, and it's not the recycle bin or temporary files. It happens on my primary (Windows XP) partition, but not on the secondary partition, and last week it happened on my external hard disk after I deleted a large quantity of data. I only have 60GB in total (30GB on the primary partition) in my laptop, and 40GB on the eternal drive, so its pretty annoying to lose 10GB. If it makes any difference, my external drive is a 2.5" laptop drive, a Hitachi Travelstar, NTFS formatted. Not sure what brand is in the laptop, but it's FAT32. But I've seen this happen on a friend's desktop too (again only on the primary partition). Any ideas why this happens and if I can do anything about it that doesn't involve reformatting? drawde A:"Lost" hard disk space Tell me if I'm teaching you to suck eggs, but what size blocks do you have on your drives, because without decent sub-block allocation, you'll often lose parts of blocks for files when they're smaller than the block size. Even with sub-block allocation, you'll still lose a bit because of the overheads, but 5GB seems a little steep for that size of disk. If I compare my size of files, with size on disk, I'm losing ~1-2% of the disk. That's with the default block size of 4K. But it probably depends on the number of small file you have around the place. After deleting a large number of files, it's probably worth-while running a disk cleaner to make all the blocks contiguous again, and that should give you back most of your space, but if they are really not getting re-allocated as free space, then I'll have to dig more. You can also safely remove all temporary files... Search for "*.tmp" (without quotes) and delete those. Also the trash bin standard setting is 10% of your drive. I'm not sure if it might be a virus or if something else is affecting it. Any help is greatly appreciated. A:"Verifying DMI pool data...disk failure" Normally this error means that the ROMBIOS in your computer either encountered an error trying to read the first sector from your hard drive or did not find a valid boot signature on the first sector of the hard drive. The could be the result of any number of things such as the hard drive power or data cable coming loose, the ROMBIOS settings being incorrect and not recognizing your hard drive or the hard drive itself going bad. I would first make sure that you hear the hard drive spin up when you start the computer and see the drive access light blink a few times and then try going into the ROMBIOS setup and checking to see if your hard drive is being recognized and then take a look at the hard drive cables to make sure that are securely connected. Although not quite as likely it could also be caused by a boot sector virus. If all else fails I would try removing the drive from the machine and using a$10 USB 2 ATA/IDE cable to connect the drive to another computer to see if it can be accessed and then run a virus scan on the drive.

Good Luck,

I keep getting "Low disk space" messages about one of my partitions.

More importantly, how can I disable this message from persistently popping up every day?

A:What are "Low disk space" messages for?

Hello Marty,

It's basically just a warning to let you know that the disk/partition is extremely low on free space. This is to warn you to either clear space or get a bigger storage device soon since you could lose data, possibly everything, on the hard drive if you run out of space on it.

The tutorial below can help show you how to disable the "Low disk space" message. Low Disk Space Warning in Vista

Just a wild guess but is there possibly a setting somewhere that may limit the amount of storage space a user can use, on a user by user basis? If so, you may just need to increase the setting for that user.

I downloaded the game in Winrar format on the desktop and when I tried to extract it to specific folder,I have this error message:-

There is not enough space on disk
Write error: only NTFS file system supports files larger than 4 GB

On my local C: drive I have more than 15 GB available. What do i do now?
Help is very much appreciated.

A:"not enough space on disk"???

Your hard disk is FAT32 format? The problem is that the file is larger then 4 gigs, so a FAT32 HD can't handle it, what u need to do is reformat ur computer so its NTSF. Except that means you will lose everything on your drive I think

I have a virus that eats up all of my available disk space. I have deleted most of my programs, and after the deletions are done, the space I made available fills right back up again. I ran (online) Norton/Symantec, trend micro house call, and AVG. I had to do it online since I need more disk space to run a resident virus program. The only way I can stop the monster from filling up any space made avalable is to delete a program and come up in safe mode. As soon as I reboot to full windows , the space I made availabe fills up. It seems to leave at least 170 to 200 Meg available. The PC is a Dell laptop with a 10 gig drive. And at this point, few programs!

Can anyone suggest a remedy, please?
I recently ran a full PC recovery from my back up DVD-ROM disks. This was about the fifth time I've had to do it, due to infections, etc.
I have 3 recovery disks, but it only ran disc 1, and never asked me to put in the other two...
When I rebooted, I soon realized that I only had 1 or 2 GB of free space.
The C: drive is around 80GB in size and obviously should not be this full.
I suspect it may have to do with the partitioning, or something I did in my previous 4 system restores...
By the way, the last time my HP crashed (about 2 months ago), I got fed up with Windows and tried to install Linux, but I was never able to figure out the code or process necessary for Linux to run my wireless driver, and couldn't connect to the internet, so I reluctantly just re-installed Windows from the disc.

A:help with "Low Disk space"

Why not scan your hard disk with a disk space utility like showsize(showsize.com)? See what you come up with. You will be able to see the largest folders on the folder sizes report and the largest file on the Only files report (if you sort on Size column).

I just got a new Hewlett Packard computer with Windows XP. The CD drive is a combo CD reader, writer and DVD. The main reason I need it is to backup my many documents, database programs (RootsMagic family history, Quicken, etc.), photographs and drawings. The pre-installed burning program on the computer is Adaptec's (I think) Sonic RecordNow!, which is useless for my needs because of the way it works. The HP tech suggested I download DLA to enable me to use "drag & drop" through Windows Explorer, but I haven't had much luck with that, either. What I need is to be able to use a CD-RW as a giant floppy - to add, delete, copy, edit and move files, just as I do on my regular floppies, using "drag & drop" through Windows Explorer, or "save as...". What software do I need for this? Please use "baby-talk" with me, because I don't understand any of the initials, terms and technical language I see all over these forums. Thanks, Dellasha

A:Data backup and storage to CD-RW's using "Drag & Drop" or "Save as..."

The most versatile program for that is "Nero"

The part that interests you specifically is InCD.

Hey everyone, here is my serious problem.

Unfortunately, I was stupid enough to let my "Free Space" on my entire computer get to less than 5 GB left. It may possibly have been at 4 or 3 GB, actually.

My computer then froze, and I went to restart it. However, it would just take me to the blue screen of death. I've tried booting it up in every way I could think of, in normal mode, in Safe Mode, with the "Repair Windows" option, and everything else. My computer will simply not get past the "Loading" screen.

On the blue screen of death, it does say "Check to see if you have adequate disk space", so I am guessing that is a big part of the problem.

But here's my question. How do I free up disk space when my computer cannot even run?

*Note: I've tried going on the BIOS and Advanced Start Up, but I can't seem to find any options that would help with my situation..*

A:BSOD: Cannot start up normally, cannot start up in Safe Mode, "Inadequate Disk Space"

Hi,

Use Ubuntu to free the space.

Step #2 on that page shows you how to create the USB/CD.

Then once you boot into it (choose the option where it just runs off the USB/CD) you can use it to delete your files or to copy them from the Windows Drive to an external hard drive (Note: Do not copy anything to the Ubuntu Filesystem as it will not be saved on shut-down)

Whenever I click "Check for Updates" in the Windows 7 update dialog, the scanning bar moves and moves, but it never passes this step. In eventvwr, there's an error with description:

"Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service."

Windows updates never install. This is my laptop in my signature, so system resources shouldn't be a problem, what with 3 GB ram available, core2duo, etc. Any ideas on what I can do to fix this?

Thank you!

I have a user who gets insufficient resources errors at random times during the day.

browsing to her network drives, causes this error. The drive is not displayed.
Printing causes this error. The document does not print
She basically, can't do anything.
The system has 2gb of memory, not a ton, but taskmgr shows there is lots of room there, CPU usage also isn't high.
Programs usually running are
Outlook 2007
and random programs.
pdf documents in Acrobat Pro
Internet Explorer 8

I close out Outlook 2007, and the error goes away, she is able to print and continue as normal.
I open Outlook 2007 back up, and she is running fine for a while.

I remember older versions of Office creating a memory leak, which was addressed in patches and service packs, but I didn't think a memory leak issue existed in 2007.
Anyone else seen this kind of behaviour, and if so, solutions?
Spyware, malware, virus free. No google toolbars or yahoo toolbars present.

This happens on a windows xp, srvice pack 3. Not using any programs that is using a lot of memory, no videos or games. Started last week.

also have received error saying "not enough storage is available to proceed with this command" when I try to open up any other programs.

I've ran numerous scans, and the next step is for me to do some work in the registry, but wanted to get some advice first.

I've read to increase the IRPStackSize, haven't done that yet. Any suggestions?

Hi all,

Sorry to repeat a question I see a lot of instances of, but none of those seem to be addressing my problem correctly.

I have not done anything new to my computer in recent days, so this problem has caught me off guard (I see most instances of this problem come after upgrading to Windows 7, I have had Win 7 installed for a while now).

Here is a summary of my problem:
1) My computer recently got stuck on the "Starting Windows Screen." So I manually held the power button to reboot.
2) On reboot, it said there was a need to run a startup repair, which I did. Everything checked fine, except for the last one which said "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted," which it claimed to have successfully fixed.
3) After rebooting from repair, the system gets stuck on "Starting Windows Screen" for a good 10-15 minutes, after which it runs a registry check. After it completes that I get hopeful -- but the screen then gets stuck on an all black screen with just the mouse cursor and nothing more.
4) Additional note: Attempting to start the computer on "safe mode" leads safe mode startup to become stalled on "DRIVERS\CLASSPNP.SYS"
5) The lastest attempt to repair yielded this message: "Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

Hi Stan, Hopefully I can help you out....or at least lead you in the right direction. From my experience, the symptoms you are suggesting sound like perhaps a dying Hard drive.

1. Do you have the windows 7 boot disks that came with your computer or when you bought the Operating System? If so, you could try and insert one of those and boot from it, and attempt to repair the installation. (this won't affect your data, only the windows system files).

2. If that doesn't fix it, you could try a fresh reinstall of windows 7, and see if that works.

For some time my wife's computer has been running real slow - i recently bumped memory up to 3/4 gig, and it did not help much. Before and after i get 'insufficient system resources' and/or 'microsoft is re-allocating ??? memory (is the word virtual?)

i have tried 5 steps - but dss hangs and quits (tell microsoft?) at orafter 'clear temps'. I cleared temps with disk cleaner (microsoft system tools), and ran hijack this without dss. (did not try dss after disk cleaner)

in this email i am putting hijack log first and then panda log - should i have appended panda log? not clear to me from 5 steps.

I appreciate you all out there! thanks: rick berry

Hey guys,

I've experienced a problem with my particular iTunes program in Windows 7. Whenever the iTunes program was running, it gives me an error stating in the form of a dialog(ue) box:

"The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. You do not have enough access priviges for this operation."

At first, I thought there was a virus that could have altered some files, but I've found out that my trusty 'ol AVG antivirus (free version 2012) that was doing a routine antivirus scan and that would have led into that error.

However, when I stopped the Antivirus scan - the error has simply gone away....

I was wondering how can I prevent this particular problem from re-occurring?

A:Windows 7: iTunes states that a "library file cannot be saved - insufficient rights"

it is scanning your library for nasties If you want to take a chance and if you are sure there will never be a nasty from something you may have downloaded and added to the library, you can exclude folders by using the "Scan specific files or folders" scan.

even after i burn it to USB correctly, tried this on other pc and USB can load just fine.
i'm thinking, it's something wrong with my boot system in System Reserved, is there anyway i can do to fix this?

Hi,

Have you tried changing the boot sequence inside the BIOS?

Normally pressing F2 or F12 on the computer will solve this.

Ok where do I begin?! I have been dealing with viruses, spyware/malware for the past week. It all started with Norton advising me that I had been infected with Trojan. Vundo and Trojan.Zonebac. After that I started receiving many different pop ups warning me about critical system alerts. I also had an annoying yellow triangle at the bottom of my screen warning me about different trojans and worms. More evil friends included 2 new icons that had made their home on my desktop one named "Live Safety Center" and the other "Online Security Guide", also installed was a new toolbar named "Security Toolbar 7.1". I have scanned my computer with many different programs and have somehow finally managed to get rid of the pop ups and toolbar, although I know I'm probably still infected somewhere. I'm sorry this is so long but, I wanted to explain EVERYTHING! I'm running Windows XP SP2, and have followed all steps to post. I downloaded DSS, but after many attempts to run, it just wouldn't let me. I do have a fresh hijackthis log and my Panda report, I hope this is good enough.
Many thanks in advance to whomever helps me, I am desperate!

Hello all, I started having problems with my pc a few days ago and kept getting this message while trying to boot it up. I'm using a friends lap top to post this to try and get some answers.

Every single time I start up my pc, I get the message that's in my title. I've even tried booting it in safe mode and I still get this message. I've seen threads and posts about this issue, but they all started receiving this message while thier pc's were actually able to get xp to boot.

I'm hoping that this is posted in the right forum.

Can anyone tell me something I can do to get it to work again?

Thanks!

A:"Insufficient system resoures exist to complete the API"

Hmm, I've seen anything from too much ram Vs. not enough HDD space, to hibernation issues.

A suggested fix is detailed below, considering you can't get into the system, even in Safemode:

Removing all but 1 stick of memory, booting into Safemode, unchecking the "Enable Hibernation" box in power Properties, deleting the 'hiberfil.sys' file and then reinstalling your memory.

A:"insufficient memory resources" when a program is opened

Hi and welcome to the Security Forum.

Apologies for any delay in replying, but we have been rather busy lately, and, of course, all our helpers are volunteers.

My name is Iain and I will be helping you clean your system.

Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix. You should not have any open browsers or live internet connections when you are following the procedures below.

Note that the fix may take several posts. Please continue to respond to my instructions until I confirm that your log is clean. Remember that although your symptoms may vanish, this does NOT mean that your system is clean.

If there is anything you don't understand, please ask BEFORE proceeding with the fixes.

Please ensure that you follow the instructions in the order I have them listed.

I have a Compaq laptop that developed bad sectors on the hard drive. I am trying to reformat the hard drive. I have the Windows 98se program cd and have created a boot disk. I get to the a: prompt and type in format c: and answer yes to the question of whether or not it is okay to lose all info on the c: drive. The computer then starts the process and gets to 49% and stops and gives me the message "insufficient memory". It will not go any further.
What do I need to do? I have tried to supply more memory by removing several software programs on the computer (didn't know if that would work or not) it didn't do a bit of good......help!!! Do I need a new hard drive or what?

I have already resolved this problem, but the situation was confusing enough that it seems to me to be worth posting the story in hopes of being of use to somebody else.

I have a CanoScan N676U scanner attached to a Windows 98 PC with no printer. Across my network is a Windows XP SP2 PC with a Canon BJC-4300 bubble jet printer. This configuration was working great until my Windows XP PC died and I replaced it with a brand new Windows XP SP2 PC.

On my Win98 PC I deleted the old printer definition, added the printer definition on the new XP PC, and verified that I was able to print. But when I tried to copy from the scanner to the printer I got an error message indicating that it could not print due to "Insufficient memory". Since I had the same amount of memory as always, this was perplexing. As it turns out, the message is completely wrong.

I resolved the problem by updating the Canon software on the Win98 PC. There are actually 3 things to download from the Canon web site: a delete-driver utility, a ScanGear Toolbox package, and the scanner driver package. The recommended sequence is:

1. unplug the USB cable from the scanner
2. run the delete-driver utility to delete the current scanner driver
3. install the new ScanGear Toolbox
4. install the new driver
5. plug in the USB cable

I find it bizarre that replacing one XP system with another introduced this problem, when the scanner was not even connected to the system that was replaced, and the printer did not ch... Read more

I want to defrag my C and E drives before Norton Ghost backs them up.

Norton Ghost will run a batch file before the backup, so I made a simple one:

C:\Windows\System32\Defrag.exe C: E:

It won't run, however. I get an error message saying I have "insufficient permission" to run Defrag.exe.

The permission for my user name on this file allows reading and execution. It does not permit any permission revisions, even though I have administrator status.

Any suggestions?

A:Defrag.exe won't run from a batch file. "Insufficient permission."

Did you right click the batch file and select run as Administrator?
