PC not able to sleep anymore

Q: PC not able to sleep anymore

Hello,

My custom built desktop PC always worked without problems.

Recently, it started rebooting after some time of inactivity (without a BSOD) and then it wouldn't start, saying that the hard drive was invalid. I had to cold boot it in order to properly start Windows.

I assumed that there was a problem with my SSD and decided to install Windows 7 from fresh. When I removed all the partitions, the motherboard stopped recognising the SSD: it would hang in the BIOS detection process. I tried the SSD on my laptop and it worked fine. Puzzling! I assumed that for some reason the motherboard stopped being nice to the SSD...

I decided to use a spare laptop HDD that I had and install it on the desktop PC. Windows 7 installed fine but now, when I send my PC to sleep, it fails to wake-up properly and always says that Windows didn't shutdown properly, and does a clean start. Hibernation works fine, though.

Might this be an indication that the motherboard had better days and might be giving up? It's 8 years old, but it's still provides the performance I need.

Does any of you have an idea of what might be going on?

Thank you!

AP

I would try going to the support site for your motherboard and re-download the latest chipset drivers. Because chipset drivers basically tell the mb to detect what type of hardware is connected to it. So give that a shot and see if it works for ya. if not post back.

For some reason, my 'sleep' has stopped working - either from the sleep button, or on the Start button option.
Now it just goes to the user login screen.
Has always worked perefctly until today.
Weird. Any ideas?

I'm very happy to have Windows 7 back and good working again!

All of a sudden I miss "sleep" which isn't showing sharp anymore but blur.

Somebody has an idea what happened?

Thanks!

A:not finding "sleep" anymore

So are you saying "Sleep" isn't there at all or is it just grayed out... If it is not there at all then you probably need to update your drivers for your graphics card and such because sometimes windows won't allow "Sleep" if the graphics card or other hardware doesn't support it... And that's usually if you don't have the right drivers...

I used hybrid sleep for a year without any problems.

Suddenly, since this week, Windows can't wake from it. It starts loading, I can hear the fans and the HDD spinning, but the screen stays black.

I then have to power it off completely and turn off the PSU for a few seconds to boot into Windows again.

Everything else works fine (normal booting, restarting, regular sleep, hibernate...).

I already:
- reinstalled Windows
- tested RAM with Memtest
- tested the HDD for errors
- reset BIOS

Any ideas??

(Motherboard is a GA-EP31 DS3L, a SATA and a PATA HDD, 5450 GPU.)

Hi everyone, I'm have an annoying problem on a computer that otherwise works very well. My laptop no longer properly goes into sleep mode. It still locks the computer but the hard drive and such still run. This is true when I close the laptop lid and when I put it on sleep manually. Help please!

It's an HP dv9700 with Vista Home Premium, by the way.

Hello Pompeius,

Since this just started happening, you might try a System Restore using a restore point dated before this sleep problem.

Hope this helps,

Greetings,

My computer is a new Alienware Aurora running windows 7 64 bit Ultimate version; it also has an internal Hauppauge WinTV HVR 2250 TV tuner installed.

I've occasionally used the built-in Windows Media Center to record TV programs, this was how my computer used to behave:
1. I set time for TV recording,
2. I put computer into sleep mode,
3. My computer woke up at the appropriate time,
4. did the recording,
5. put itself back to sleep afterwards.

It's been a while since I did the last recording, I just found out recently that my computer now behaves differently: it only does step 1 to 4, it doesn't put itself back to sleep anymore. I came home a few time to find the computer was still on long after having recorded the shows, when it should've been in the sleep mode.

I'm scratching my head over this sudden change of behavior. I didn't change any power settings at all. The only hardware change has been the 850w PSU, when the last PSU failed and had to be replaced under warranty service.

TIA.

I have an HP media center PC running x64 Vista, when I usually put the PC in sleep mode (I'm assuming s3?) the case fans, PS fans and CPU fan would all cut off, now they do not. I have been reading and scanning forums all day on the subject and find no fixes. The closest thing I can come to is a registry setting? There are no power management options in BIOS(the BIOS is the most recent release, I checked).

Any suggestions appreciated!

Hi everyone,A few days ago, I suddenly couldn't update AVG anymore. It always gives me an error, telling me the connection with the server failed. I also noticed that I can't connect Limewire (P2P program) anymore and opening movie streams in Windows Media Player doesn't work anymore either.I searched some forums for a solution and I found someone with a similar problem, who also told he couldn't execute the "cmd" and "regedit" commands anymore. I tried it on my own computer and I can't run those things anymore either. When I try executing them, the explorer goes all weird and shuffles the program bars on the task bar.I've manually downloaded the latest updates for AVG, installed them and did a full scan, that didn't find a thing. I also ran AdAware, which said I had some malware, which I removed with it. Hi everybody,
This is first time asking a question, hope I'll do good. I use Win7 (and others) with sleep/wake-up  from long time now, as main method of start/stop.
Recently, I managed to connect a Win7 desktop to network by cable, just to be able to wake it up using RDP and work on it from other PC-s. All fine, but...
After closing RDP (by disconnect) and  wait (30 min) to enter in sleep mode (supposed to be S3) everything goes well till it should stop power-which it don't (like in S1). In BIOS power options I choose "S3 only" (not "auto, not "S1
only"). Moreover, the red led (HDD) goes on and stay on this state indefinitely. Same result if you log-off from RDP and manually put it on sleep locally from log-in screen
WITHOUT logging in.
The Problem:
Next, the computer don't wake up (do nothing) by start button, neither by RDP ("computer not present" or so), nor even by reset button!!. The only way to (re)start it is by power down (4 sec on start button) or cutting down the power.
I'm for 30 years in computing, I never saw that hard reset won't work because of software.
Other computers with Win7 used before never have this problem - they normally enter in sleep S3/resume- even after multiple RDP sessions and going to sleep states between them.
I have just tested another scenario: after closing RDP, put manually in sleep mode
AFTER login in my account - that works normally. So RDP put computer in a state impro... Read more

Hi All,
I have two systems a N650SLI-DS4 and a GA-EP35-DS3L hooked up to a Trednet KVM switch. If I put the GA-EP35-DS3L to sleep and switch to the N650SLI-DS4, the GA-EP35-DS3L system wakes up. The only way I have been able to keep it in sleep is if I hold the switch for the N650SLI-DS4 while pressing the sleep button and then switching to the N650SLI-DS4 immediately the GA-EP35-DS3L won't turn on until I press the power button. Now the N650SLI-DS4 doesn't have the problem. I went into the BIOS and disabled the keyboard and mouse wakeup but don't know what else to check. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to check next?

This is what happened to me for the past few years. This week I just replaced my N650SLI-DS4 with an ASUS P8Z77-V LK board. The Asus also does NOT show the same issue that the GA-EP35-DS3L has. Could this just be an issue with the power supply?

Thanks,

Hi KnightCa,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I'm really sorry to hear that your Lenovo W520 goes into sleep mode even after it has been disabled in Power management.

Go to Control panel - - >Power Options - - >Change plan settings (Choose the Power plan that you have selected) - - >Change advanced power settings - - >Adjust the settings under sleep and display as shown below.

Also, try doing a windows update and reinstallation of Power manager in your system.

If the above said didn?t help, try doing a registry editing.

1. Open the Start Menu. 2. In the white line (Start Search) area, type regedit and press Enter. 3. If prompted, click on Continue in the prompt. 4. In regedit, go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\238C9FA8-0AAD-41ED-83F4-97BE242C8F20\7bc4a2f9-d8fc-4469-b07b-33eb785aaca0\DefaultPowerSchemeValues.

5. Expand DefaultPowerSchemeValues and Click on the key that is for the Power Plan that you want to change the wait time (Refer the table below)

I know there are a bunch of sleep problems out there but I couldn't fine one similar to this after doing a forum search. Running Windows 7 Ultimate. Sleep used to work ok but now when I choose sleep from the start menu, the screen blacks out but the computer doesn't actually go to sleep. The fans, activity lights, hdd lights are all still running. If I move the mouse the screen comes back. However, if I just wait for the sleep timer to kick in then the computer does go to sleep (all fans stop running and all lights go out). I'm not sure what caused this. I use my pc as an HTCP and now when I push the power button on the remote the pc does not go to sleep. Any suggestions would be great, thanks!

Hello,

I would like to know how to create a task in task scheduler , that'll force the computer into sleep over a running program.

Basically, I have some software that runs in the background called 'WD anywhere backup' and when this software is running it prevents the computer from sleeping.
I need the software to run, I cant disable it, because it backs up my computer to an external hard drive.

But someone told me it might be possible to create a sleep task, but to override this program, or exclude it ?

Many thanks in advance,

Stuart

A:create sleep task, to force sleep over a program ?

I'm a little confused. If you put the computer to sleep, no programs will run, including the WD backup, unless it wakes the system up.

Do you expect the WD backup to run during sleep?

Hello,
I have a quite new Windows 8 Pro installation upgraded from Windows 7, but as a clean install. It is running on a Asus K53E laptop bought almost a year ago but I ran into a problem with going to standby mode. The laptop successfully dims the display and
then turns it off at the set time but it never reaches the sleep mode.
I followed the steps from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976877 but to no avail. The command

Powercfg - devicequery wake_armed shows only keyboard and mouse but I don't suspect the mouse as it is Microsoft Wireless Mouse and I turn it off before trying to induce sleep. I have made sure to turn off iTunes media sharing and Windows Media
Player Network Sharing service. The drivers are from Microsoft or the newest I could get from Asus.
The command
Powercfg -energy showed some errors - mostly with USB devices/hubs and with one of the system drivers:
System Availability Requests:System Required Request

The device or driver has made a request to prevent the system from automatically entering sleep.

I rather suspect some incompatible driver but to press Asus support for some update I would need to know what to blame. I reviewed system logs in Event Viewer but can't find any useful entries around the time when the computer should go to sleep, but there
are so many logs that I might have missed the right one. So my question is if somebody could introduce me to a tool that ... Read more

My wife's computer has been displaying an error ever since I enabled Hybrid Sleep & Hibernation on her computer:

Dell Vostro 1400
Vista Business SP1 - 32 Bit
Intel T7250
3GB RAM

I created a customized power setting for her that did the following when operating under batteries:

Shuts down monitor after 5 minutes
Shuts down HDD after 15 minutes

In advances, the relevant (I think) settings are:

Sleep after - 15 minutes
Allow Hybrid Sleep - yes (on battery)
Hybernate After - 120 minutes (on battery)

When she shuts off the computer by closing the lid, the computer goes to sleep no problem. If you turn it back on within 2 hours, no problem. However, if you turn it on after the 120 minutes, she gets a message that "Windows has recovered from a serious start up error". That being said, we have not found any ill-effects after acknowledging the message. I have also attached a screen shot a details from the event viewer that captured each time it has happened.

In the interim, I have disabled Hybrid Sleep, but left the hibernation on after 120 minutes. I set the computer to hibernate, and it restarted with no error messages.

Any thoughts as to the cause of this? Is the solution a simple OS bug, and I should simply leave Hybrid Sleep off?

Any help would be appreciated.

I currently run win7 ultimate 64bit, 8gig ram, intel i7-2600k cpu, and my OS runs on an OCZ SSD (all specs are in my profile)

Sleep mode is set to S3 in BIOS, I have hibernation disabled (so no hibernation.sys file on my c drive)

When I put my computer to sleep then immediately wake it up, the login screen shows instantly, I type in my pass and it loads in like 0.5 seconds.

When I put my computer to sleep but wait for around 1-2 hrs before waking it, it shows the login screen instantly but after i hit login, it gives me the Welcome spinning circle thingy for like 20 seconds before I can see my desktop. That's like longer than my entire boot-up time excluding POST.

Event viewer doesnt show any performance delay, and I dont think my OS drive (OCZ vertex 2) has a cache so I have it disabled. I'm sure all my mobo drivers and graphic drivers are up to date.

Suggestions on why this might be so? Any idea would be much appreciated!

I have an issue with the sleep function. The computer does not awake from sleep. When I try to do it, it behaves as if it was waking, but it never ends and there is only a black screen; the mouse and keyboard are inoperative. The only thing possible to do is a hard reboot. When it boots, it shows a notice with a minute report (in the zip file) usually saying there was a blue screen, but I NEVER see any blue screen at all.

I know the power configuration is OK because I have always used the same scheme. A powercfg ?energy report shows several errors and warnings. They refer to USB and PCI (vendor 1002=ATI motherboard), but I don?t know how to repair them.

I downloaded the drivers downloader from Rrecipester.org and downloaded and installed the drivers. They are all Broadcom Corporation signed, the brand of my USB Bluetoth attachment. I rebooted after installing, as recommended. Run powercfg ?energy again and got the same report issues (in the zip file). I don?t think the processor utilization warnings to be very important because they are low and sporadic picks. It has been like this for some time now, so I don?t have a restore point. Can someone help and tell me what I can do so solve this issue, please?

Quite confident it's a driver issue, it will be very difficult to troubleshoot from the one included dump file though as it's incomplete and inconclusive.

Hi, I've got a Toshiba Satellite Pro A120 (1.5 yrs old; Intel core 2 CPU 2.33GHz; 2GB RAM) with Vista Business (SP1 32bit) and often when I put it to sleep, it will hang or crash on resume forcing me to to do a hard shut down. Sometimes the screen will just be totally black and hang, and sometimes it will get to vista's "resuming" splash screen or even the login screen and then hang/crash. Often the disk activity LED will remain on indefinitely (due to the hang) even though I can't hear any disk activity. As far as I'm aware all my drivers are up to date. I'm just so fed up with loosing documents and personal settings now I've got to do something about it, and from googling, it seems this is a pretty widespread problem but I've not come across a solution that's worked for me - I've even installed the extra KB patch that was meant to fix it.

Also, sometimes when I put it to sleep (fully charged) and not use it for a a few hours, I find that the laptop has lost power during sleep because the battery has been run flat and the ventilation grille feels warm, even though I know that the battery can normally last much much longer on sleep. Is it possible that the computer resumed itself from sleep to hibernate after 200 mins on battery (as my power settings dictate) and then crashed whilst resuming, causing it to drain itself flat (since it my laptop should have entered automatic hibernation on the critical battery warning unless it was unable to respond)? When I leave my computer after a session, it automatically goes into sleep mode after a period of time and remains that way till I wake it up.

However when I manually put it to sleep ( via shutdown options) , it goes to sleep immediately but for only a while ( a few minutes) then it shows the desktop screen again. If I then leave it alone after it self awake , it goes back to sleep as described above.

Any idea why ?

This will generate a report that will show if any software is blocking the sleep request. Your next step would be to configure the software in control panel power options

Hello Seveners!

I have been having trouble with a BSOD for a while now. It is getting to that extent that I bare it any longer! I need help!

Firstly, these BSOD's have been happening randomly, but normally the case is while it is in sleep, or when I put it to sleep, the screen will go black, but the laptop will refuse to actually sleep. It remains in this state of useless on-ness until either I pull the plug or it decides to BSOD.

I have a program called Soluto, which sends the details of the BSOD to my email. It said the error code was 1000009F and the likely cause was: nt driver.

I ran verifier.exe and restarted. Upon restarting I was constantly greeted by a BSOD informing me that there was a problem with HIDCLASS.SYS. Upon restarting with last known good configuration, I am here, looking for help! There are 6 results for HIDCLASS.SYS on my laptop, all seeming to point to AMD.

I have attached my Minidumps from today (two BSODes), my system NFO and a picture taken of the BSOD when booting after running verifier.exe. They are zipped as one, due to the fact that uploading of NFO files doesn't seem to be supported.

This is getting increasingly infuriating as I am constantly losing work!

System specs can be found on my profile and in the NFO.

I appreciate any help!

Many thanks,

Ben

A:Numerous BSOD's. Normally caused while in sleep / putting to sleep.

What USB devices have you got installed?

I believe we are looking at a USB device causing a bugcheck.
Do you have a gaming mouse or any mouse drivers installed?

HIDCLASS.SYS appears to be mainly caused by mouse drivers.

Because a lot of driver power state failures are caused by graphics drivers I recommend updating yours as it is very outdated.
Here's some instructions if you are unsure how to update it.

Recently, I noticed that my battery have been draining quite fast while in sleep mode. I investigated the issue by turning off bluetooth, background apps, etc before sleep. There is no difference. I still loses like 20% of my battery in 8 hours. So, I typed powercfg /a in cmd to see if anything pops up, and i noticed that the only supported standby state is S0. It states, supported S0, hibernate, and fast startup. S1,S2,S3 are all not supported. Then, I read up some info on sleep states, and it appears that the s0 sleep state isn't actually sleeping, it is just the idle state. How do I change my sleep state and/or ultimately get rid of this massive battery drain when sleeping? I can't just hibernate because I have a SSD and it will use up sleep cycles. Thank you very much.

Mobo:  Gigabyte M68MT-S2P
AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Processor, 3300 Mhz, 6 Cores
I guess it is best to just explain the experience I am having.  In January I purchased my first SSD drive, promptly installed Windows on it to use as my boot drive.  I was very pleased with how quickly the system would come out of sleep, so I've become accustomed to letting my computer go to sleep when previously I had disabled this feature.  On the 13th I got a new tower and transferred everything into there.  On the 20th I ran into a little anomaly with the sleep function, where I went to wake the system and the mouse light went from on to off and the system booted up to the POST screen. From the POST screen I noticed that the SSD was missing from the detected devices, so of course the system failed to boot.  I hit the reset button and the same thing happened.  I held down the power button to turn the PC off, then immediately turned it back on and it was back to being detected.  I guess that since it was missing during that first boot, the BIOS automatically set another drive as the boot drive since I had to go into the BIOS settings and correct the boot order.
Once this issue was fixed, I get to the Windows 7 boot screen and it freezes.  Reset again, get past POST, then Windows asks me if I want to resume my previous session or delete the resume and do a fresh boot.  Resume freezes, new boot works ... Read more

A:Computer reboots when coming out of sleep, likely only as it's going into sleep.

SSD and sleep sometimes doesn't mix to well. There might be a fix from the vendor. A good read here on your same issue to give you an idea why. http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2011/06/ask-ars-do-solid-state-drives-cause-problems-with-sleep-mode/

SSD's boot so fast in my opinion it's kind of pointless to have sleep or hibernation. I would be sure to turn off all that garbage...sleep, hibernation, defrag, HD indexing, HD paging, Windows Search service etc. Hibernation alone uses like 10g's of hd space. Windows places a hidden file called hiberfil.sys on C: To turn it off go to cmd.exe run as admin and type powercfg -h off. Hiberfil.sys will vanish from the drive and you will regain hd space. HD paging, again take control of that and turn it off completely or limit it's useage to like 400-2048 depending on how much memory the system has. Hope that helps you out.

I like to put my computer on sleep so I can just come back to where I left it, but the past few days when I put it on sleep the screen would just go black like it was asleep, but the computer was still on and running like I didn't put it in sleep. Then when I move the mouse to come out of sleep it says "locking computer" and goes to my password screen (which is what it should do before going to sleep). I don't think its in the power settings because I've checked there and played around with the settings (I'm not technically challenged so I don't think it's something that simple lol).

Also, my touchpad scroll feature does not work (and has not worked for quite some time). It comes back when I turn the computer off and on again, but I only do that a few times a week. I've tried reinstalling the touchpad firmware so that isn't the problem.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A215.

So pretty much what the title says.
I have it set to sleep after 30mins which it doesnt, and yet if i go to the start menu and choose sleep myself it will.
Any ideas why?

A:Windows Wont sleep unless i automatically put it in sleep

Hi Mitch.

You mean Manually put it to sleep.

This is my suggestion, go to Power Options, on your preferred power option, put it all to Never.
Then click Change Advance power options, browse the sleep option, Make sure to put the "Sleep After: to Never.

I have attached a picture for you to refer.

About 2 weeks ago i started having sleep issues. It used to work perfect for over a year, I figured something went wrong and couldnt get sleep to work consistently. Thought a reinstall might fix it.

Now on the new install, about a week. I am still having issues. Sometimes the computer will wake in the middle of the night around 330am and other random times. Also sometimes the computer powers up when coming out of sleep but monitor doesnt come on. I installed the updated drivers for mobo, video card. And disabled the network from being able to wake the computer (something I actually want on). I also tested with stock speeds on mobo, cpu. Same issues, have also tried stock with increased voltages. No luck.

What should i do its driving me crazy?
I remember seeing a way to see a log of what caused computer to come out of sleep? Since I just reminded myself, I will go and check all connections inside computer.

I have a notebook connected to a monitor with external mouse/keyboard.

When I put the notebook to sleep via the Start menu or the keyboard, it is able to wake out of it by moving the mouse around or pressing a key.
However, when I create a shortcut to it for Windows Task Scheduler to enter Sleep at a certain time, it won't wake out of it unless I press the Power button on the notebook itself.

Why is this? Of course I have wake by USB or whatever enabled in the BIOS otherwise it wouldn't wake out of it in the first instance.
Here's what my shortcut targets "C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState"

So basically, I want a shortcut that puts my notebook into a lighter state of sleep that is able to be awoken by moving the mouse or pressing a key.

Hello KJ, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Disabling hibernation using METHOD ONE in the tutorial below should allow the sleep shortcut to work as sleep instead.

A:Sleep mouse during sleep mode?

Hello Jack,

You might check using STEP SIX in the tutorial below as a guide to see if you have a "Power Management" tab to uncheck the "Allow to wake computer" option in it for you mouse in Device Manager.

Power Options and Sleep Mode Problems

If not, then you can use the STEP FIVE section to manually disable the mouse from waking up your computer.

Just be sure that you at least have the keyboard allowed to wake up the computer, or you will have to press the case power button to wake up your computer instead.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

The problem is that when I close the lid on my laptop, the screen goes black, and that's it. The fan is still running, all the lights are on. The thing is, when I turn off wifi, the laptop sleeps fine, with the power light turning orange and pulsating, and the fan off.

Earlier I found a page with the so called fix for this which was to change the advanced power option "Prevent idling to sleep" in "When sharing files" to "Allow computer to sleep." This fixed my problem, but it came back after a while, probably due to going off and on wifi, and plugging and unplugging.

I need to get the laptop to sleep properly even when on wifi and sharing media.

A:Laptop sleep doesn't actually sleep, fan still on.

Make sure that your settings, when closing the lid, are set to Hibernate. This will be a true sleep mode.

My PC is fairly new and I'm having problems with slow shutdowns/restarts and slow sleep/wakes. Recently it seems to fail waking altogether and restarts after a while instead. Usually during waking I just have a black screen for a long time before the reset/restart but sometimes I see the Windows log-in screen but it's unresponsive.
The problem predates my CPU undervolting and doesn't seem to change when I switch RAM settings back to Auto instead of XMP (I my RAM necessitates some kind of overclock in order to function at its rated speed).

Can anyone advise how to proceed? Thanks.

Hi,
I've had this problem intermittently on my laptop for the past 2 years however it has been occuring more often recently.

Basically sometimes when I click the sleep button on Windows 7, the screen fades to black as usual. However the fan keeps running (sounds like when it's on full load) and the power button light stays on endlessly. I always have to force shut it down and restart it.

What can be the issue?
Thanks.

A:Laptop freezes between entering sleep mode to being in sleep mode

Hi joseph10444.

Such a situation may occur when some driver (mostly the PnP device drivers depending on the ACPI configuration) fail to response within a stipulated time period during the power state change.

Let us see some data. Upload your MSINFO32.nfo file.
Click on the start button
Type "msinfo32" (without quotes) in the search bar of the start menu, click the resulting link. It will open the System Information window.
File>Save. In the "File Name" filed, put "MSINFO32" (without Quote), give the save location to desktop, and click the "save" button.
Give the time for processing, it will save a .nfo file on your desktop.
Zip it, and upload it following the instruction.
Upload the list of all the third party drivers Using NirSoft DriverView :
Download and execute Driverview
View > Hide Microsoft Drivers
Edit > Select all
File > Save Selected Items
In the Save dialog, Set the path to desktop, Put "Driverview" in the name field, and save.
Zip the .txt file and upload it.
Those files will give us a closer look to the issue.

I'm running Windows 7 x64

I know that this issue is floating around all over the internet and I've seen many many threads on this, still nothing is working for me. I just upgraded an older Socket 754 AGP video ASUS mainboard to a nice little SATA, PCI-e ASUS and I just configured WMC to record programs on it. A test record went fine, but I cannot get my PC to go back to sleep after it records.

I'm using a Hauppage 1850 TV tuner card and I don't know if the infrared part of it, it puts out might be keeping it awake or not. I've also made sure the keyboard and mouse are not keeping it awake. Also after seeing many suggestions, I have played around with my W7 power settings and nothing really has worked. Also it's daunting challenge to check everything that might be keeping it awake. There's just so many things it could be.

One thing I did try was to switch my power button to make the PC sleep before a recording session. That's the way I had it on my old system, which worked fine. I would get up in the morning after a night session of recording shows (the PC would be in standby at this time), then I would just hit the power button and the desktop would resume.

I guess all of this depends on the board too and maybe this board is just different in it's setup, even in the BIOS, which is set to S3 only. So one thing I might try is to go into power settings and put like 5 minutes before it sleeps, so that it will shut off once the recor... Read more

Somewhere after SP3 came out (continually updated..) my XP SP3 machine started going to sleep and giving black picture (monitor lite is ON but flashing as if graphics are only flashing up once every 5 seconds), even though sleep and hibernate are both turned off. Generally a power-down reboot is needed to get it back up. Sometimes I can get it back by pressing the power button for 2 seconds, after which the screen will be black for minutes, and then ALT-CTL-DEL and ALT-U and down arrow 4 clicks and vigorous mouse thrashing may bring the screen back up, and often a windows message appears saying that the keyboard driver has kept the machine from going to sleep (sleep turned off remember), and I've wiped out and reloaded the standard keyboard driver.

During bootup time, the screen is usually black although sometimes the bios messages will appear (not always..) I've been fighting this for many weeks now. Sure looks like the graphics are somehow going to sleep - I've tested this with a replacement graphics card and drivers, that card shows the same problem.

Ideas ??? Thx! http://static.techguy.org/smilies/confused.gif

I have gone through everything I can find in these forums. Incl. the power check magnifyer presentation ( nice job btw) to the Vista every possable setup I can think of link re advanced power management and what not. My laptop used to sleep but would always wake up. I changed nothing. Had the botchted 9.5 install, rolled back to a restore of 9.4 Catalyst and all is great in 64 bit RC 7100. Save this BLOODY sleep /hibernate anything issue! It's driving me nuts. I have unplugged everything and it still wil not go into sleep mode. It is a clean install. Everything else woks perfectly. I have never had this issue (of no sleep @ all) since the beta was released not any of the subdequant builds. Totally out of ideas. Please help me out here
BTW-I checked for the legacy drivers re my keyboard and mouse in Bios and they are not listed there. I have a Phoenix bios. The latest release from Dell.
Logitech had no answers for me. Maybe the 9.4 restore is causeing this? If so I am trapped as the 9.5 simply installs but does nothing.
I thank you for ANY help you can throw my way.

A:Sleep issues and more sleep!!

Check your bios. I had a sleep problem (couldn't wake up) and solved it by switching power management in bios from Auto to S3.

You could also try S1 (though this doesn't save much power. but is better than nothing).

I assume you've also tried fiddling with the Advanced settings in Power Management in Control Panel. Apparently you can also get third party power management apps, but I have no knowledge of these.

Hello, I was giving my computer a general tidy up and it somehow caught WIN32\Gaelicum.A. This prevented me from doing anything but accessing safe mode. So i followed a couple of guides and through safe mode managed to remove the virus.
Overjoyed, I rebooted to normal mode and proceeded to log in. However after entering my password and attempting to log in i was logged straight out without so much as seeing my desktop. I also tried pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del twice and trying to log in via administrator. However the same thing happened.
So I thought right something has been added to my startup folder to log me out as i log in so i went to safe mode to try and remove it in that. But the same thing happened in that.
In a last ditch attempt to remove the suspected script from my startup i loaded up my Ubuntu live CD and accessed the folder through that. Only to find it empty of everything but the desktop.ini file.
I should say i have XP Home and no XP install CD or recovery CD because my OS came installed on the laptop from the manufacturer. And the recovery partition is also corrupted somehow so i cant restore. Any ideas on how to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated as although I have all my important files backed up and i could use Ubuntu for most of my needs, I need access to XP as I am working on a project for school which needs to be completed by the start of term in august and there is no equivalent software available on Ubuntu.

A:Can't Log In to XP anymore

Hi and welcome

Sorry for delay. we're quite busy here.

Bad news I'm afraid....

Win32/Gaelicum.A is a nasty file infector. It is also network aware and can spread to other machines on the network.
Even though your antivirus program detects it and can quarentine/heal some of the files it will be near impossible to clean up entirely.

I suggest to take this machine off the network entirely untill you can either clean it or you re-install everything. Your other machines should be thourally checked by a couple good virus scanners too.

With a file infector such as this the only way I would trust the system is to do a full format/reinstall of your operating system and all your programs.
Even if antivirus can heal many; often the file is corrupted beyond repair and wont work after virus code is removed. You cannot even trust your antivirus program as parts of it will be infected as well.

I do not suggest backing up any of your programs because this virus looks for and infects all executables on all drives. Your backups will need to come from known good cds or dvds or re-downloaded from the internet.

Your documents, mp3s & pictures should be fine to back up.

It all started when I was defragging last night. I got a couple BSOD's while doing the defrag but idiotically I just ignored them, restarted my pc and continued to defrag. After the third BSOD restart is where I died inside. When starting my pc, after the Windows XP loading screen it goes to a black screen and stays there. I try to go into safe mode but it freezes when loading drivers. I tried to do a repair with the Windows XP Setup CD but after it loads the drivers it goes to a BSOD with the following STOP message 0x0000007B. I've searched online for help and have used many utility cd's and diagnostic tools with no success (P.S. one of the utilities is a live cd and it BSOD's when starting up). There's nothing wrong with the RAM or Hard Drive, the partition table and boot sector are fine, the MBR and MFT are fine. I plugged my HDD into another computer as a secondary drive and I can explore the contents of my HDD (while using the primary drive in that computer). I suspect there may be a problem with a controller because I put a backup hard drive in my computer and tried installing Windows XP but I get the BSOD again; it's really weird because I used a SATA connection for my original drive and an IDE connection on my backup drive (is this a northbridge/southbridge issue?!). Is there any way to fix this (preferably without formatting or buying any new parts)?! And if there really is something wrong with a part and/or controller, why did none of the diagnostic tools recognize ... Read more

A:Can't use pc anymore?!?!

well there is a technical way but I doubt you're up for because it uses linux however, a simple way is to reinstall the version of windows but without formatting the harddrive this should fix the issue. you will gain access to the computer as if it were normal you can backup your documents, music, etc. and then reformat the computer.

I have tech service through the ISP I have. I noticed that Chrome was running kind of sluggish and figured, since it was there, I contacted tech support. The tech removed Malwarebyte, Super Anti-Spyware, Advanced System Care, two registry programs I had and Baidu browser and Baidu Speed up. He said almost everything could be done with programs already available in Windows 10. He tried to show me but he was so darn fast I could hardly keep up. I told him among all the programs only Super Anti-Spyware found 470 tacking cookies! He said that it was OK and they were harmless and I could access them from another Windows cleanup selection. Are all these programs that are 3rd party out there junk? When I used them I found so many problems, weaknesses and vulnerabilities. But to have them be deemed mostly useless, he did say MOSTLY useless, I am really confused. Been messing with computers for over 20 years and always used 3rd party Virus, spy ware and optimization tools regularly. Are they just programs that cue into certain functions of Windows and isolate them to make a program that is already in Windows but makes it sort of a short cut or are they really valuable? I am reinstalling a couple of things the tech deleted whether he liked it or not. As for the rest, I just don't know.

Hello everybody,

This is my first post here, I got into a situation with my computer that I don't know anymore how to go on... hope I can get some help here.

It started when I was searching for a little freeware to change my desktop wallpaper automatically. After being redirected few times I found and downloaded "Desktop Wallpaper Timer 1.6.9.exe" (don't remember the web address, I was not attentive). I've scanned it with NOD32 and no threads were found.

After I tried to run it, a disaster began.

First I've noticed the message in the taskbar: "Your security center service is turned off" when I tried to turn it on again it was not possible. Says simply the security center service can't be started. I opened regcleaner by jouni vuorio to remove the new thing, under "software" was written that the FirstRRRun has been installed.

I removed it and than:
- NOD32 simply dissapeared - message: The program doesn't exist
- The same story with Spybot Search&Destroy
- Same with Registry Mechanic
- Not able anymore to connect the internet: "wireless wizard can not be started" (I'm writing this from another computer)

I tried to reinstall NOD32 - Not possible: Message "106 Error Occured while extracting archive file"

Can not reinstall spybot either

With another computer I've searched for AV programs like AVG free, Kaspersky trial, F-prot trial... None of them can be installed. All give messag... Read more

A:Don't know anymore...

Seems the problem has been resolved. I've used no-need-to-install AV Dr.Web. It found and removed 2 worms Win32.HLLM.Beagle. After that I was able to reinstall all programs and fix all other problems.

I've been trying to get rid of this problem:

When my computer goes Idle my Connection drops.
I Just closed Firefox and my connection dropped.
It drops randomly and constantly ( weird huh ) every 20 minutes or random browser closes.
It happened about 4 or 5 months ago, then went about 2 or 3 months with out the problem, now its back!

My equipment:
HP Pavilion Desktop. Vista (forget the model)
Westell 2200 Modem
Linksys WRT54G2 Router (i don't use wireless)
Also i Use a wired Xbox 360

Here is the thing though:
When my PC drops connection I am still able to get online and play with my friends on Xbox Live, So I don't think it is the Modem or Router, it has to be a cord or my computer or something.. Anyway I'm getting really tired of it because every time i want to use my PC I have to reset my router to restore the connection. Anything helps!

P.S. Everything is Wired at ALL times and it Still says its connected but i cant get online, And when i go into my Status it says 356 Million Bytes received, i don't know if that means anything.

one peacefull day the computer rebooted by its own, and then i can't get access to any FTP (wich i've been using before the restart).
Some days ago It also happened, i tried everything (virus scan, spyware, reconfiguration...) and the only solution was a reformat, but this time i cannot consider it.

I'm using Windows XP SP2, with all updates.

I don't know where to post this now. I have no clue anymore what is wrong with this system. With the money I have wasted into this thing I could have bought a top of the line gaming rig by now. But now its too late to just pull out and leave this thing alone.

Anyways suddenly I am getting this problem(problem number 156?).

This is how it started: I updated my video card drivers to the latest ATI drivers 9.12. I started playing the game DIRT2 for a couple hours. I finally closed down DIRT2 and suddenly I was getting this problem: The PC would get a split second freeze every couple of seconds. Along with this split second freeze is coupled with this High Pitched Looping sound like when a program locks up and you get that looping sound until you can close out the program. This freeze up is basically noticable in the form of the mouse freeze up for a split second, then it moves again and then split second freeze again.

Ok, that is just the start of the problems. I am also suddenly having random issues with connecting to the internet via my wireless. Before this problem occured I was able to connect flawlessly. My wireless adapter will be displayed as "Connected" as always but I cannot open a web browser page. My windows live was still connected for 10 minutes one time while I was trying to figure why I can't connect to firefox. Then suddenly windows live crashed!

I thought that my problems were coming from the faulty hard drive that I jus... Read more

Hello Everybody!

First of all, sorry about my English!

So.. I have a super huge problem. My computer was working fine for like 2 years until Sunday. That's when I checked my computer and saw a message: Windows was unable to save file: D:/... etc.. (I'm sorry I didn't write it down.). It froze down. I couldn't do anything. I had to Reset the computer, but since that time the computer is unable to see my D: hard drive, which is a Seagate.

You should know my configuration:
I have a Compaq Presario SR1911X with 2 hard drives. One is for the Windows XP: Samsung SP2004C, the other one is for all my data (photos, music, emails, everything!): Seagate ST3200826AS. This is the one which is not working.

I took my computer apart and tried to change the cabels, just to see if it's a cabel problem. It's not. And I can hear that the HDD has power because it gives me the sound.. But the only problem, that the computer doesn't recognize it anymore.

Please Please Please people, help me!!!! I don't want to loose all my data, expecially my photos. Also, I don't have the money to get it to a data recovery comptany.

Thank you!

A:Can't see my HDD anymore!! Please Help me!!

It sounds like the hard drive died. Good thing you backed everything up, huh? Data you don't have at least 2 copies of is data you don't want to keep.

Is the drive even spinning? Did it make any noise before quitting? If there is no access at all, a data recovery company may be the only answer. But they can cost 1000's of dollars, too.

You could try some hard drive tests if they will run on it.

Free Hard Drive Testing Applications:

Manufacturer's Tests
Victoria for DOS
Victoria for Windows (Both versions of Victoria are among the best and most thorough tests available.)
HD Tune
CheckDisk 1.03 (Marks bad sectors as unusable.)
HDAT2 (Diagnostics and bad sector recovery)
MHDD Low-level Diagnostics
Bootable Hitachi Drive Fitness Test Floppy or CD Image (works on most drives)

Hi there,

I have an old Dell XPS M1530 and wanted to salvage the hard drive, buy an enclosure and use it as an external hard drive. This is what i typed in:

select disk 0
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
format fs=ntfs quick

Do i need to do anymore? or can i just put it in an enclosure and use it as a hard drive? and will i have the 320 GB on the drive to use?

A:Do i need to do anymore?

I think you are OK.

But I'd go back into diskpart and look at the results.

Probably with these commands

List disk (should show disk 0)
Select disk 0
List part (should show partition 1)
Select part 1

Do you see a part 1 with the expected size?

If so, you are good to go, but you can always recheck in Windows Disk Management after you get it connected.

I'm not sure, but I don't think you have to assign a drive letter in diskpart.

As the title says,

Where can I find XP these days?

I'm wanting to put it on the HTPC I'm building, simply because it's cheaper than Win7. Would prefer XP Pro for the IR support, but not neccesary. I'm working with a hauppauge HVR-1600-MC, it supports XP SP2 up through 7x64, so it's just a matter of price....

I know i could find Vista dirt cheap, but i wouldn't want it for the same reason as the next guy.

At the same time, I don't know if the board (GA-MA78LMT-S2) is supported by XP?

A:Where to buy XP anymore?

It is very expensive as it stands.

Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2: Amazon.co.uk: Software

Just type into google 'Buy XP pro' thousands of options.

Hopefully someone can help me out because I am a novice when it comes to computer skills. In the last few weeks or so my internet has been acting up and keeps crashing on me witha message reading that I have had some serious error and needs to close, allowing me to report it to microsoft. I ran AVG 8.0 (Free edition)and Spydot. They seemed like they got rid of things and everyone was going okay but my internet was still acting up.

Now, in the last few days that problem has gone away but I believe have malware on my computer. I keep getting pop ups from avg saying trojans like Vundo.FJ and BHO.HYT are on my computer and should be fixed, which AVG supposably does.

Currently, I keep getting new windows of internet explorer opening, kind of like popups, that I never did anything to that are from really random sites. I am not sure how that helps but I figured I would throw it in here.

From my little knowledge of computers I used "run" with msconfig and noticed that in my startup it says that I have these three things that I know should not be there. They are:
1. ruyopaku
2. tukuhegu
3. hagijifa or metadomo (It keeps changing between the two for some reason)
They are all rundll32.exe, whatever that means.

This is what I did to get rid of it, besides running my two spy programs, so hopefully I didn't screw anything up.
1. I used "run" an went to services.msc to stop Backgroudn Intelligence
2. I used "run" to look at the registery edit... Read more

A:Please help, i can't take this anymore

Hi, welcome to TSF.

I'm currently at work so my assitance will be brief:

I want you to search for these files on your computer and make note of if they exist. If they do, we'll need to delete them in Safe Mode:

Enable the Viewing of Hidden Files, and then search:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\cmd.com
C:\WINDOWS\System32\netstat.com
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ping.com
C:\WINDOWS\System32\regedit.com
C:\WINDOWS\System32\taskkill.com
C:\WINDOWS\System32\tasklist.com
C:\WINDOWS\System32\tracert.com

Reboot your computer to Safe Mode and then delete any of those found above, includining this folder:

C:\Program Files\winupdates\

while in Safe Mode run HJT and fix:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdates] C:\Program Files\winupdates\winupdates.exe /auto

Reboot and report back with a fresh HJT scan.

Hi my name is Liryc and I'm new to this forum, and I am hoping that someone can really help me before I put a hammer to this computer cause its driving me insane. I have been having some problems with it. I recently found that I had a virtumonde virus on the computer, after speaking to the IT guys at my job they told me what to do to remove the pesky little problem. I thought that I did the right thing cause it started running instead of freezing on me when I turned it on. But what I realized is that now the computer is working alot slower than before. I ran Ad-Aware, and Spybot and they located some critical things on the computer. I also had a pop up about mdmcls32.exe. I checked on the computer to see what it was.. Found out that its a trojan. I'm just tired right now of all this crap. Can someone please help me. I've deleted some from the registry and I've ran Spybot more than 1 million times. Can someone please help me in fixing this problem. While trying to clean up the drive of my Dell Inspiron 6400, I must have accidentally uninstalled something. Now my DVD player does not play DVD anymore.
When I go to ?My Computer?and then click on the DVD, I get an error message saying ?This file does not have a program associated with it to perform this action.? The DVD does neither play on DIVX nor on Windows Media Player.
I have checked under ?Device Manager? to see if there was a problem with the DVD driver, but it seems fine. There is no exclamation sign. I even uninstalled the driver and rebooted the computer. It still did not solve the problem.

Can anyone please give me a solution? It is getting quite frustrating.

Thank You in advance.

The fact that Utorrent is in the list could explain why you are having troubles.
That is where viruses and things can come from.

Please open a command prompt by right clicking and choose
Run as Administrator
type sfc /scannow<enter>

This will check and fix the integrity of you system files.

Here is my problem. Back in '07 I bought a box set of DVD concerts. Got them home they played fine. This was on an XP-SP2 system using the nero of that year. XP crashed and I had to do a complete reload of the OS. Since then these DVDs do not work. I am now using Windows 7. The DVDs are DVD-9 region code PAL4. I have software[AnyDVD] that overcomes the region code but both my DVD drives won't even acknowledge the disks are there. I have a Samsung 16x dvd player model SD-616E and a Benq DVD/RW model LS DW1655. I am confused because I distictly remember watching these vid, its not like DVDs erase over time. Anything that can help is appreciated.

I have a WD 160gb IDE HD. The computer originally came with a SATA drive, but that drive kicked the bucket, and I got a new drive. Previously, after the manufacturer's logo loading screen finished, a prompt would pop up saying that the disk wasn't found, and press f1 to continue, or press f2 for the setup utility. When I pressed f1, it loaded my disk fine.

This morning, I had to reinstall my OS. After installing many drivers, I had to restart to get the drivers to take effect. Suddenly, the disk would no longer load. The computer wont find the disk at all. I've checked all the wiring, and it all seems to be in place. After the manufacturers logo screen, a prompt comes up listing the types of drives (SATA, Primary, Secondary) and saying that they were not found. When I press f1 to continue, it tells me "No boot device available. Strike f1 to retry boot, f2 for setup utility." Under BIOS options, the drive is "unknown".

Does anyone know anything that I might try to get this device working again? Any help would be greatly appreciated, and a solution that solves my problem would make me get down on my knees and

Thanks in advance.

Alright, I've been having some trouble with this laptop.

I turn it on, no disk in the drive, and it eventually tells me: "Operating System Not Found!"

I tried putting in the restore disk and the OS disk to reinstall, but with either one, I just get a "No Hard Drive Found" message.

I really can't get any further than that. Any ideas, at all? All I know is: Things worked fine before he tried to clear some internet files (apparently).

Am I just going to have to resolve myself to the fact the thing will just not work, or is it the registry may be at fault etc.

Yesterday I discovered that my webcam is no longer listed as a device on my pc. Then my cd/dvd player. When I try to log into my Facebook page, my pc beeps once and the tab reads "Redirecting" and I'm brought back to login page. I tried a registry cleaner from Cyberdefender but didn't complete the installation because the "tech support professional" couldn't get the install to work without another very costly technician doing the job (bait and switch?). I've cleaned up programs that I no longer use, I've run my Norton 360 and only found tracking cookies. Spybot didn't turn up anything either. The HJT log is attached. I'm stumped. After 20 years of desktops I think I'll stick with buying laptops from now on. I am very satisfied with my
Core i3 15.6" 6gb 500gb $330 lap, for Internet, games, work, etc.

After checking the CPUboss site for desktop vs. laptop CPUs, I am not convinced I should spend more $ on a monitor and give up portability even if desktops beat lap CPU speed. I see that Core i5 desktop beats lap i7 by 25%, and i3 desktop beats i5 lap by 25%, and AMD a8 desktop beats a10 lap.

even a dual core desktop beats quad lap:

Hi! When I got my new ZBook few days ago it had Win7, some drivers and a lot of HP bloatware preinstalled. It also featured extremely loud speakers. After lots of updated drivers from HP Support Assistant the max noise level drastically decreased. I checked everywhere (right click on sound->playback, mixer) and everything is on 100%. I also tried disabling sound enhancements and it had no effect what so ever (which is strange since it features B&O sound enhancements). Now my comp is running Win10 and some more updated drivers and it's still the same. So please help me get the amazing speakers performance back. Best regards.

Some of my Cd's have suddenly refused to open on my system, they are all my own burnt copies of Jpeg images, some are ok others not! I have tried them in the DVD & Cd Rom Drives.
I have cleaned the drive and discs, my system tries to read the cd's, which causes all other programmes to freeze, I can't get into 'my computer' or 'run' mode, it all locks up until I eject?
I have tried one of the Cd's on another PC, and it works fine.
Has anyone any suggestions please?
The only recent changes to my Pc are tweaks to enable Microsoft Combat Flight sim to work better, could this have caused this problem?
