What is this folder. If it is a system folder it does not belong into Music. Must have gotten into there by accident.

This is on my mom's laptop. It has a fresh Win 7 install on it about four or five months old. It has very little 3rd party software installed on it. Avast, Office 2007, Firefox, Irfanview, and her HP printer/scanner driver are about all I can think of.

A couple of weeks ago she created a new folder one level below her "Documents" library (ex. Documents\Projects\Foo) for a project she's working on. It consists mainly of a couple of Word documents and 150 or so photographs. She had me looking at something tangentially related that turned out to be user error.

But, while looking at that, I noticed something very odd. When navigating to this new work folder in Explorer via the Documents library shortcut in the Navigation Pane, or, when drilling down through the C: drive in the pane, her Foo folder is not visible. But, it shows up in Recent Places.

When entering the Foo folder from Recent Places and then clicking on Projects in the Address Bar to navigate up to the Projects folder, the Foo folder is visible. But, when I navigate to that same Projects folder any other way, I don't see Foo.

I do see all of the other files in the Projects folder. To double-check that I was looking at the same Projects folder I dragged a file to make a copy and then looked at the folder from both directions. That copy showed up both times. So, it's the same Projects folder.

I can't figure out how this is even possible. It should either be always visible or never visible. I ... Read more

My picture Folder now Lists the Wrong Task Pane. I believe Windows XP placed a customized music task pane in my pictures folder leaving me to only be able to arrange anything in the folder by artist, year, track, etc. I would like to know how to fix this for it is getting very frustrating

A:Windows XP places the wrong task pane in a folder

Hello kidhero99

Try this and see if it works for you.

1.Right-click the folder?s icon or, if you have the folder already open, in a blank space within the folder, and choose Properties from the pop-up menu.

2.Click the Customize tab.

3.Select the appropriate template from the Use This Folder Type As A Template drop-down list and click OK.

Hi,

I have a strange problem with my Win7 x64 Font Folder Control Panel:
If I take a look inside C:\Windows\Fonts there are about 265 fonts.
But the Font Folder Control Panel Applet shows just 11, all of them are raster fonts, no ttf, no OpenType.
All my fonts have corresponding entries in the registry, the font folder has the correct attributes +r+s
I am the Admin on my machine.

Did anyone of you already had a similar problem and found a solution for that?

The fonts are correctly installed an can be used in Word - But the Win7 Font Manager is completely malfunctional and I cannot copy and paste new fonts into the fonts control panel

Thanks in advance

Sincerely yours Oblomow

This seems to be fairly common from what I see with a Google search. One suggestion was to run System File Checker (sfc /scannow) from an elevated Command Prompt, see if that fixes the problem. See Brink's tutorial here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

Hi,

I think someone copied a file from my laptop onto their USB stick while I was at work. I got home and started to work on the file, then when I pressed save it said 'cannot find location, please insert removable storage device into drive d' (or something like that) so I 'saved as' in another location, then checked my 'recent places' folder. Sure enough there was evidence of a removable disk being modified on my laptop whilst I was at work. I confided this to my house mate, checked my laptop again later that night and it had been deleted from the recent places folder. I now want to confront that person about what happened as it is now obvious to me that they had copied my file, but wondered if there's any way I can get the evidence back. I have tried the undo button, but to no avail. This happened on Tuesday (8th). Can anybody help me?

Thanks

A:recent places folder

How did you access it in the first place? if it was moved you wouldn't have been able to opened it.

But it does seem fishy though that it would disappear like that. Check the recycling bin for the file. There are some 'undelete' programs but the data may have already been removed.

My 'My Network Places' folder is usually split into two, local network and internet. However, for some reason some of my LAN folders are now appearing under the 'internet' heading.

Any ideas why that would happen? How can I fix this?

Many thanks

I've seen that, and it's just some sort of Explorer thing, they're not actually accessable on the Internet.

Have you tried setting the Windows Explorer views back to default? Tools, Folder Options, Restore Defaults.

Is there a way to set the item in the Places Bar to "Firefox Profile" (i.e. NOT "xyxyxy.default") without changing the folder's name?
Thank you.

A:Set Firefox Profile Folder in Places Bar

Hello Yaron,

You might see how it'll work by creating a shortcut of the folder with a name you want, save the shortcut to where you want to keep it at, then use the shortcut's path in the places bar to see if it will display the shortcut name instead of folder name.

Hope this helps,

I recently was having trouble with my userprofile. At first I couldnt log in and then i was able to finally log in but it was a blank temporary profile. I fixed it using profiler and all my files are back. However the computer is doing two strange things it is no longer keeping track of recent places(i have the option checked so it does) and no longer maintaing settings when viewing pictures in windows explorer(ex. viewing by date modified or viewing with a specific program like windows viewer). The minute i close the folder it goes back to a default setting. Please help.

A:recent places folder is always empty.

Another long-standing known issue with Windows. Usually caused by a registry error. I don't normally advocate making registry changes, but this is one of those instances where it's largely unavoidable. See if this helps:

I should add that fixing your profile problem is the answer. You probably won't get the computer to behave properly until you've corrected the problems in the registry.

Here?s a very bizarre one:
I?m using the Customize features in the Folder Properties in Windows 7. I have a whole lot of images of old cars arranged in folders by manufacturer. Each folder image is the manufacturer?s logo, which looks very cool. All very well and good. But now once in a while when I make a new folder, rename it, or sometimes just move it, one of those images will show up on the icon of the new folder! It can be any of them at random. Mind you, the image isn?t in the folder itself, it?s getting it from somewhere else. I can make it go away by using the Restore Default button, but it?s very annoying. Is a bug? What?s going on?

If I understand it correctly, the folder icons show the two most recently modified images as part of their thumbnails.

The easiest way to get around this is to take you favourite picture and save it as "folder.jpg"

1) The "Normal" thumbnail view of a folder:

2) Make a copy of the image you want to use, and rename it to "folder"

3) The thumbnail view of a folder containing an image named "folder.jpg"

Some days ago I accepted the upgrade to v6 of Thunderbird. In the next day or so, when I started Tbird, it displayed a small Safe Mode window. which I had not asked for, at least not intentionally. I had not heard of Safe Mode for Tbird, and I didn't know how to deal with the window. In trying to get out of S.M, I flailed around and managed to lose my customizations. I have probably restored most of those, so this is not an issue. --- However, my main problem is this: in my Folder List, none of the folders have text names; they all have numbers instead. They work like the text names, but it's *very* hard to navigate. When I click on a folder, the text name of that folder is displayed at the top of the screen, in normal fashion. -- My question is, how can I make the Folder List display text names? --- Thanks.

Hi - first-time poster looking for help (Googling did not turn up the answer):

I have numerous clients whose info I keep in folders / subfolders with a set naming convention. As a result, my Recent Places list shows many (sub)folders all with the same name, which isn't very helpful. Is there a way I can include the path to the folders in the Recent Place list to differentiate them? It would greatly increase my productivity! (BTW, I've tried using the folder columns available by right-clicking on the column names in Recent Places - both Folder path and Path return only C:\Users\[username]\App_Data\Roaming... (i.e. the location of the shortcut) vs. the actual path to the true folder).

Thanks!

Hello, i have this little issue. I use a custom made software which writes logs to certain directory. The logs are not needed for the software to work, however neither I or someone else can modify the software, but i would like to prevent it from creating logs. The logs are made in .txt . Oh and software/machine are/must be running with admin privileges (UAC is disabled).
I tried locking the folder with cacls foldertolock /e /p everyone:n , after doing this i cannot access it via explorer, but the logs keep getting saved in that folder.
I also tried adding +r attribute to the folder, but it didn't affect it in any way.

Any other things i could try? I would prefer that this could be made remotely via cmd/registry/whatever.

First, all of this is new. I've used Vista Ultimate flawlessly for a long time, nothing new has happened (no new programs) I swear this just showed up. I know people say that all the time, but really, I'm not computer illiterate and really, I didnt' change anything. I promise.

So, I keep my desktop clear and use the Desktop Shortcut toolbar (lower right hand, next to the notification area) to navigate to my programs. For as long as I can remember, when I click down there, I would see TWO shortcuts, the ONLY ONES on my desktop: 1. Shortcuts (I made this one, takes me to my shortcuts folder, where I put.. all my shortcuts), and 2. Recycle Bin.

Now, when I click down there, I see this:

Control Panel.

Ok, you say, no problem, just go to Personalize>Change Desktop Icons and unclick all of those. But wait.. they aren't clicked there. They aren't. So I have links in my desktop toolbar that ARE NOT on my desktop. If I right click them in my desktop toolbar and select Delete, they do delete, but if I then click on the desktop toolbar again, they are back again. I had a small network up and running that I set up awhile back. I formatted & reloaded 2 of the machines (both running WinXP Home SP2). On the laptop, "My Network Places" shows it's shared folder and the "MSHome" network. The PC shows the network in "Create a network place" but doesn't see the shared folder.
Tried everything I can think of... cancelling and resetting the folder to share, adding another folder..., nothing.

Hi guys. I just upgraded my processor to an AMD 8350. It replaced my Phenom. This is the 3rd day the new processor has been in the computer. First two days everything went fine. Ran Prime 95 and IBT to make sure i was up and stable. This morning (3rd day) got up, turned on the computer, and now i have less usable ram than i had last night. No matter how many times i restart, it shows less in windows than what bios shows. It says either 4,6, or 8gb usable ram (it changed just about every time too). I have reseated all the ram. I have moved them around. I have reseated the processor. I have clean installed windows 7 home premium x64. Does anyone have any ideas? This is the first issue with RAM i have ever ran into. Also, when i am in bios, and i go to the RAM settings, everything shows up like it is supposed to. Details, options, timings, etc. Not really sure where to go from here.

A:12gb ram shows in bios, only 4,6,or 8 usable shows in windows

In most AMD CPUs, the memory controller is on-die in the CPU. Maybe your FX-8350 is malfunctioning.

Also:

- Do you have the correct voltage for your memory set in BIOS?
- What kind of memory is it? (brand name, model, and speed)
- Have you tried putting the Phenom back in to see if the 12GB memory comes back?

Hi everyone,
I did a backup of some files on my sandisk 1GB usb drive.I had several folders. Let's say I had the folder "Pictures" in which I had sub-folders named 2005,2004,2003 etc and in those subfolders, some pictures... Now I want to restore those pictures and in the directory "Pictures" I see files named 2003,2004 and 2005. Those files should be folders but they show as being files and they have no extension and have a size of 16K. I tried some file recovery software with no success...Anyone has an idea on how to fix this???
Thanks for your time

A:Folder shows as being a file

When you dragged? those folders, the usb recreated them as file names not folders.
When opening up two drives with two explorer windows, you may have to highlight the
files inside and right click to use the "copy" method there. The same may apply to copy
of folders to a usb drive. Give this a test try to see if using the copy method corrects
this if you used the drag folders method earlier.

I'm Running Windows 7 64 bit, Home Premium, fully updated.

On my laptop (64 bit Win7), "Recent Items" works properly, showing all docs I've opened only (no folders, as it should be). The taskbar Jumplists for each program also show recent docs opened in that program.

The "Recent Places" folder, however, is always empty, nor do recent folders show on the Jumplists for folders.

Searching has turned up nothing useful, but tells me I'm not the only one with this issue.

What I've tried already:sfc /scannow
making sure both the "Store and display" options in Taskbar and Start Menu Properties are checked.
making sure the reg key HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\Recent points to the correct folder (%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent Items) and that the folder itself is actually named "Recent Items" and not just "Recent"
running a disk scan (chkdsk)

Safe mode
deleting/restoring default links in the Favorites list

I have a small home network where I share a few folders between PCs (windows XP). All are in the same workgroup name, IP subnet & same router. When I open 'My Network Places' to browse shares, the shares on the other PCs are listed as 'The Internet' resources rather than 'Local Network'.

This causes Windows to sometimes prompt me for permission to open a file from one of the other shared folders.

Does anyone know a way around this?

This is a cosmetic defect, but I've heard of it before. Here's one person's resolution of the issue.

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/23996-42-shared-files-show-internet-heading-local-network

I have no idea about being unable to share files, however I did have an issue with my shared folders showing up under the Internet heading instead of Local Network in My Network Places. After reading for several hours, I found it has something to do with IE7, which I had recently installed. This is the fix I found:

1. Go to Start/Control Panel/Internet Options/Security/Local Intranet/Sites/Advanced

2. Add the computer name of the system whose shared folders you are trying to "move" in this format:
file://ComputerName
Click Add

3. Repeat step 3 for next computer name if there are others on your local network.
After you’ve entered them all, click Close, Ok, Ok

I did not check or uncheck anything, only added the computer names. To clarify, when I clicked on “Sites” everything was already checkmarked for “automatically detect intranet network” and then once I clicked on Advanced the checkbox there was NOT checked. I did not touch any of these settings.

When I finished I opened My Network Places and it had worked. You'll need to do the same thing to each computer you are having the issue with. I hope this works for you! Click to expand...

I recently wiped my hard drive and installed my system, now my flash drive shows up as a folder in my computer instead of a removeable drive. Now this is really strange, when I start in safe mode, the flash drive shows up as a removeable drive. Thanks for any help you can give me.

As it is now I have to click on the folder when I want to see if a fax has come in. Is there a way to have the folder change in appearance to show when it has something in it?

I have a WIndows 2012 R2 server, on that server I have about 10 users. My desktop computer is Windows 10, my boss' computer is Windows 10. We are both users on the network. I am trying to share a folder with only him and none of the other employees. I have gone to Properties, Sharing, advanced sharing, checked share this folder, then gone to permissions, I removed everyone and added him and me with full control.

The dang folder is showing up on every computer on the network and they all have access to it and open and change anything in the folder.

No matter what I have tried I get the same result. Hopefully someone here can have an answer on how to fix this. I had no problems with this on my old computer and only he and I could see the folder. That computer suffered a hard drive failure so we are working with a new machine.

All other net work functions see to be working fine. But then we share pretty much everything else.

I've come accross an unusual problem that I've never seen before.
I'm on windows 7 home premium 64 bit.

I have a Library called "work". Its actually located in my documents folder.

In this folder I have \Work\Discs\ubuntu. As you may have guessed I work with linux on occasion.
I wanted to create a new folder here but the new folder button was missing from the toolbar and the context menu.
I can create a new folders elsewhere just not here.

I thought as an easy workround I would create a new folder in the parent directory and simply move it. I created it in \work\discs and then moved it into "ununtu" only to find it wasnt there.
If I navigate to the real location of this folder the new folder is there ok.

Then I thought if this folder is playing up I will create a new one and just delete this one so I created \work\discs\ubuntu2 and moved all of the contents of ubuntu to here.
So far so good.
I then created 3 new folders here "1004" "1010" and "1104" I then moved all the files from ubuntu into these folders.

To be clear now \work\disc\ubuntu2 should now contain 3 folders and no files.
I then deleted ubuntu and renamed ubuntu2 --> ubuntu.
I then double clicked on the new "ubuntu " folder expecting to see 3 folders yet I see the contents as it was before I started. If I call it anything other than ubuntu I see the contents fine but if I name it ubuntu it reverts to its old state.

Any Ideas whats causing this.

Hi All,

Have a minor but irritating problem with Thunderbird. I have used it for a long time without problems, but now, when I delete messages from my "In Box" using the tool bar delete button, the messages completely disappear and are not placed in the "Deleted" folder as used to be the case. I have, as a result, lost the option to recover any messages if I need to do so.

It may be helpful to know that I use the following extensions/theme for Thunderbird :- Talkback 1.5.0.8 and Lightning ( Calendar Function ) 0.3./Noia 2.0 eXtreme. I have tried disabling/uninstaling these features, without success.

No big deal I appreciate, but it's a pain.

Really grateful for any help out there.

Many Thanks in anticipation

Hello, recently I used my SatatoUsb to backup my files from my 1st PC to my 2nd computer, then proceeded to format the 1st PC. After format, I then used SatatoUsb again, took out my hard drive from 1st PC, connected to 2nd PC and "Cut" the files ( I know, dumb.. should've copied ) and pasted into the 1st PC's hard drive.
I double checked on the Hard drive to make sure it sent, it did, so I safely ejected it and inserted it into my
1st PC.

The thing is, I had my PC on sleep before taking the hard drive out... Anyways, I check, the folder properties
shows 0bytes together with no files in the folder that I did a backup on...

After countless attempts using recovery programs and such, they failed to find it. Now when I check the folder,
it says 1 file exists adding up to 51 bytes but nothing is showing in it.

I also tried Chkdsk and SFC/SCANNOW, but SFC/SCANNOW takes only 2 minutes when my hard drive is 223GB.
I believe it could be corrupt but isn't scanning it fully. I also tried scanning it in boot up without any success except it finishing extremely fast and finding nothing.

Here is a sfcdetails.txt attached below, not sure if that helps?

Any help is appreciated, even if you can help me via Teamviewer, pm me. I'd greatly appreciate it. I really want to get my files back, the backed up file is only like 20Gb anyway, and the files I really need from that backup take up like 2GB.

Thank you.

I have a computer running Vista Home Premium. On it, I have a folder shared read-only over the network as "downloads."

I can access the folder from other computers on the LAN, using \\computer\downloads. My problem is, sometimes the browsing computer (an XP Pro SP3 machine) will get an outdated list of the directory.

For instance, I have added many files in the past couple of weeks. Yet, for some reason, even today one of the computers would show the most recent file as being from late January. I've tried refreshing and shift-refreshing. Doesn't help.

What's weird is that this behavior seems to vary from client computer to client computer. One of my XP Pro SP3 machines will have the most-recent list of files, and the other one will still be a little bit behind, not showing the newest files.

I can't figure this out! I would think that the problem must lie on the side of the client, yet I have never had this problem previously in all my years of XP-to-XP file sharing.

Is there some sort of network cache present in XP that can be cleared? Or any other ideas on how to solve this?

Thanks!

A:Browsing shared folder over LAN sometimes shows outdated list of files; sometimes OK

It's not unnatural for what shows in My Network Places (XP) or Network (Vista) to be out of date, but usually not that out of date. In My Network Places click 'view workgroup computers' and you should force an update.

On any (properly working) network one computer becomes the Master Browser. It determines what's on the network and periodically updates the other computers.

All:
Having a heck of a time figuring this one out. Would GREATLY appreciate any help/suggestions. Knock yourself out with a technical explanation, I'm an IT guy but even this one has me baffled.

Rebuilt my OS to Win7 Professional last Monday. After OS installations, I typically need to install drivers to recognize the additional SATA (Data) Drives that I have on the machine. This is perfectly normal and I've done this without fail almost a dozen times.

With this last installation of Win 7 Professional, the iTunes folder on an external SATA drive displayed initially and then dissappeared. It STILL appears to be taking up space on the drive, however I can not view it or access its contents. I've searched for files inside the drive and nothing. Repaired bad sectors, ran chkdsk on the drive and no luck. The folder still appears lost?

Any new suggestions or ideas to try? Yes, I do have a backup but its over a few weeks old and I have since added new content to the drive. Previous versions takes me back BEFORE my last backup was completed.
Thanks,
Nate

HI there,

PRECEDING PROBLEMS, MAYBE USEFUL, MAYBE NOT:

For the last month I've had a bewildering laundry list of problems with my computer. Firefox 37.0.1 started using superhigh CPU to open and load pages. Then Thunderbird and Avast! began to do the same when connecting to the internet for downloads/updates. Then my printer ditto. When printing, I can't do anything else. (It's Brother MFC 4500+, an ancient workhorse that's never given me a day's trouble.)

Then my mouse went on the fritz; swapped out to another mouse and got the same problem---the pointer freezes and restarts intermittently, then freezes altogether. I can get it working again by unplugging the USB and plugging it in again, but the fix is temporary, maybe hours, maybe seconds. Every now and then I get a Windows message in the taskbar tray that "something has happened" and the system can't recognize my USB device.

The problems didn't happen all at once, but rather in the sequence that I've noted. I've run different antivirus and malware and rootkit scans repeatedly, but all come up clean. FWIW, I run good computer utilities every week or so, so the system is squeaky clean that way. I've been limping along.

I wasn't sure whether to put this in the XP subforum or the Vista/7 one, as it relates to both. Hope I made the right choice. :-)

My problem is this: I have a Windows 7 Ultimate desktop (recently upgraded from Vista Home Premium) with a C:\downloads\ folder that is shared over the network as "downloads."

On a second computer, an XP computer, one I set up the correct sharing permissions (that is, to give access to Computer 2's username), I can then browse to \\desktop\downloads\.

The problem is this: The file list show in \\desktop\downloads\ is outdated, and many files and folders are missing. There is nothing special about these files or folders. They're not hidden or anything.

For instance, opening up C:\downloads\ on my desktop shows a folder with 3,118 items -- files and folders.

Accessing \\desktop\downloads\ from another computer shows 111 items.

Interestingly, accessing \\desktop\downloads\ from the desktop shows the correct amount: 3,118 items.

I have tried refreshing the file list, obviously, from the second computer. I have also tried accessing \\desktop\downloads\ from a third computer (also XP) on the same network, with similar problems... leading me to believe the problem is on the Windows 7 computer.

The W7 desktop has no problem accessing other shares.

I should also add that all three of these computers are on the same workgroup and can ping each other.

Also, as a test, I created a brand-new folder, C:\downloads2\,... Read more

Setting up a time-based reminder is easy enough but before you can set a place reminder with Cortana, you need to first add a place to it. Here?s how.

Open Cortana, click the hamburger icon and select places. This is where any and all places that you?ve added will appear. Click the Add button at the bottom and then enter the name of the place you want to add. Cortana relies on Bing maps so depending on how well, or in my case how poorly your area has been indexed and marked, you might have to enter the name of your city as well. It might also ask for permission to access your current location. Hit enter and wait for it to list search results.

I just got switched to Windows 7 on my work computer and am trying to figure out how to add network folders to what used to be My Network Places. For example, when I'm in Word and saving an attached file, in XP there was a button called My Network Places (MNP). I was able to move assign some of my common network folders to the MNP and therefore to get to that folder with a single click.
So I'm not trying to pin a folder to the taskbar, but trying to retain a folder pathname so that when I'm saving a file, I don't have to go through the entire network path name to get to the folder of interest. Any help? Thank you.

I have two computers. I'll call them "mine" and "his".
"mine" has both Vista and Windows 7 installed (dual boot), "his" has XP Home.

When I boot "mine" into Vista, the networking works perfectly. Vista and XP can see files and printers and all is great.

When I boot "mine" into Windows 7, I can see "his" computer and access his files and his printer. However "his" computer doesn't even see "mine" show up in My Network Places.

I've checked the workgroup in Windows 7 and it's the correct name.
I've gone to the Network and Sharing Center in Win 7 and set my Network to "Home network".
I played briefly with the "HomeGroup" thing in Win 7 until I reached the point where it said it only worked for computers running Win 7. However it does says HomeGroup: Joined (and it appears that I've joined a HomeGroup).

So now what? Why can't XP see the Windows 7 computer?

Problem: Our laptop has been freezing up lately (vague, I know, and I apologize...)

From what I've seen, it freezes up at just two different times.

1) When we're on the internet. We pull up Internet Explorer, go about our business, and after several clicks (usually just a few, actually), it freezes up and the busy cursor just keeps going. Then when we click on Close, nothing happens. Same when we go through the Task Manager. Or even just try to minimize or bring up the Start menu.

2) When we're logging off or shutting down. It'll stay on the Logging Off or Shutting Down screen with the busy cursor going. My mother pressed Shut Down one day, walked away, came back hours later, and the computer was still "Shutting Down..."

In both instances, the only way I can get it to do anything is to shut it down - improperly, of course, just by pressing the power button. And I know that's probably not helping matters. I'm not sure if it's something I might be able to tackle myself or if I should just take it to a pro.

Additional info:
It's a fairly new HP Pavilion dv5, no more than 6 months old. These problems started just a week ago, and it had no problems prior to that. We have had full virus protection with Norton since we bought it.

Thanks guys, if you can help.

Ok, I just started a new job and their domain is kind of screwy. They have a number of Windows 2000 machines running on a Windows 2003 AD domain. I am trying to get the AD integration for PC Duo running on this domain, but I am running into a problem. The machine I am using to test with, as well as every other Windows XP SP2 box, is missing from "My Network Places", which is what PC Duo uses to distribute clients remotely. I see all the Windows 2000 boxes fine. I found what could have been a viable solution, where I enabled File and Print Sharing in our Windows Firewall GPO, but all that did was give me every friggin domain in existence on the network, which totals well over 100. And I still couldn't see Windows XP boxes, which didn't help my problem anyway. Any thoughts on this? Where should I look?

A:Solved: Windows 2003 Cannot See Windows XP Machines in My Network Places?

Ok, it took me hours and hours of searching, but I found the problem.

Apparently, XP SP2 disables some services required by My Network Places to see and browse machines on a domain. These services are:
Workstation (needed to see computers in My Network Places)
Server (Needed to start Computer Browser)
Computer Browser (needed to browse computers in My Network Places)

Now, you don't NEED these services to run, and it's somewhat of a security hole to have them running all over your network, but they are required to run to both see and browse computers through My Network Places.

I set up ftp access to my web hosting account through the My Network Places thing in Win 2K, and it worked. Has worked for months. Then today is no longer worked, but gave me this error message instead:

FTP FOLDER ERROR
Windows cannot access this folder. Make sure you typed the file name correctly and that you have permission to access the folder.

Details:
The computer is disconnected from the network.
----

The first part is ok. I have typed the name correctly, and I do have permissions. The last part is strange. My computer is connected to the network (hence this post through my browser), and the ftp computer I am connecting to is connected to the network (have tested by alternate means.)

Anybody understand what this error means? Is it something to do with mapping a network drive? Any ideas to get my ftp up and going again, and if not any suggestions for a simple (and free) windows FTP client I should use?

A:Places bar in Windows 7 common dialog

Actually, the places bar or rather the lack of it is an OS issue, not necessarily hardwired into the program.

When a program can be run in XP compatibility mode, like Textpad, as below, the places bar shows up, but not otherwise.

Also, when I run Office 2010 on my XP box, I get the places bar, but not on my Win 7 laptop. So there must be a way to get it to happen. We just haven't found it yet.

Hi, when I had previously setup Windows XP screen resolution to 1024x768 I would have such a hard time seeing the fonts in piticular areas of Windows XP. For example, I have an application called Maya. It is a 3D modeling/animation program which allows graphic designers to create 3d content as well as animating them too. The problem I have with this is when I click on a 3d object to read its attributes, such as its location in 3d space, the text is to small to read for my eyes. So I had decreased the screen resolution to 800x600, which did help with seeing the text better, but now I cannot work in the 3d view ports because the attributes window, which holds the data of the selected 3d object, is taken up most of my screen. In addition, Maya is not the only program I have this problem with. When my screen resolution is set to 1024x768, I cannot read the names of the files in Windows Explorer and under the start menu->all programs list. So I am wondering if there is away to change the font size for these 3 examples?

I've been using the computer for a really long time but I don't have a clear understanding as to why or how certain OS's are set up the way they are...I'm curious to know why in Windows some of the same folders are stored in multiple places? This has always been an annoyance to me when it comes to organizing and remembering where everything is on my computer. Sure they're are ways to search for things but I feel that still takes up too much time and bottom line there's just gotta be a easier way to access your files. I have multiple computers and it's just impossible for to me remember where everything is.... I could be missing something on how to get a hold of it but anytime I look up how to organize your folders it still doesn't seem efficient to me. I have my own ideas on how I would like it to work or what I would like microsoft to do but I"m not a computer tech person who is able to understand if my ideas would actually even work or not. I believe that WinSAT only test for DirectX 10 and 9, not 11. That's why it only shows DirectX 10. If your card fails to do the DirectX 10 test, then WinSAT will only display DirectX 9. Don't worry about it. If DxDiag shows DirectX 11, then your card can support it.

My most recent BSOD was while the Windows Experience Index was updating. Although, I have gotten several lately other than that. I have always thought it was drivers for my recording interface which is an M Audio Profire 2626. Any help would be great.

Hi Folks:

I was just wondering (with the release of Windows 10 soooo close) are the any "clearance" style ways to purchase a cheap copy/license or two of Windows 8.1 Standard (x64). I don't need pro, and I'm not yet ready to install it on my PC full time yet (I'll need a new machine to do that). But I'd like to get it really cheap and legit.

Any help is appreciated. If anyone in Ontario might know too, that would be especially helpful (but please any American or overseas friends, I'd be very happy to hear from you)

I have re-installed XP on a Dell computer that is about five years old after reformatting the disk.

I cannot get a LAN icon in the My Network Places folder.

I have also installed the 3-com Ethernet adapter from the disk that was delivered with the computer.

The computer has an ethernet cable connector, and when I plug one of our network cables into it, connecting the computer to our network, the socket glows orange as it does on the other seven computers in our organization.

Using another computer, I have gone to the Dell Support website and entered the Service Tag number of the problem computer and found a Network driver there. With the aid of a memory stick, I have downloaded it and installed that as well. Doing that was apparently a re-install because the installation procedure asked if it could overwrite the existing file, which I let it do. The first instruction after the installation is to go to My Network Places and right-click on the LAN icon.

I am at a loss to connect the computer to our network because I cannot get to first base. Any information I have found, even on the Microsoft Support website, begins with something to the effect of: Go to My Network Places and right-click on the LAN icon. But that is my problem, I cannot get a LAN icon to appear.

I would be grateful for any ideas you could give me to try.

Thanks very much
Andynic

Hello,
I am seeing old entries of phantom folders in My Network Places in Windows 7. In XP you could just delete them, but there is no selection for this in Windows 7. Does anyone know how to delete them?
Thanks

A:Deleting phantom items from network places in windows 7

I had the same problem. Microsoft decided to make this difficult for non-advanced users:

1. Open a command prompt
2. Type "net use" (no quotes) to see a list of networks
3. Type "net use /delete" (no quotes) and the exact name of the network from the list you just generated.

Hi all,
Ive had this problem before and had to amend it with factory restore and im not doing it this time.....

Anyway...
The Hard Drive seems to be reading 'all over the place' when i start windows as it is slow and once Windows has started and Bit Defender has loaded up and my network connection the Hard-Drive light flashes intermittentley for about 60 seconds after its 'Ready-to-Go' the light stays on for half a second and off for half a second repeatedly for a minute and sometimes after Ive accessed the drive (used some programs)

Another thing that gives the game away is that when it is actually starting up then XP welcome sound breaks up as though the drive is trying to access other parts of itself whilst playing back the sound.... AND the mouse pointer keeps sticking, I have tried Checking drive with SpySweeper 5, ive erased all tracks with tracks eraser pro and used Diskeeper v10 to dafregment (even though it says that its ok) and when i did it took hours (it used to take 5 mins cos drive was always 'clean') I used the FAAST defrag on it also and it took hours and made no difference....

I tried system restore in XP but the 3 points I tried they all failed and i noticed when Diskeeper 10 was defragmenting most of the stuff it was moving seemed to be system restore items in the 'System Volume Information/_restore' folder.... What I had been upto at the time of this happening was i was downloading Live Aid 85 for my girlfriend wh... Read more

Under Folder Options, I have the "Don't show hidden files, folders, or drives" checked.

Yet, there is a folder called $RECYCLE.BIN on every drive showing when I'm viewing my folders.

I don't recall it showing before I had to do a malware and virus sweep.

Does this mean it is not a hidden file, or that its attributes were changed?

If so, is it safe to change it back to hidden manually?

TIA

A:$RECYCLE.BIN folder shows on drives although "Don't Show Hidden" set

Hello Webbiz,

Yep, if the $RECYCLE.BIN folders are not faded, then it sounds like the hidden and/or system attribute has been cleared for them. You could open a elevated command prompt, and type the command below and press Enter for each $RECYCLE.BIN for each drive letter one at a time to add these attributes back.attrib +s +h "C:\$Recycle.Bin" /s /d
Repeat the command above substituting C for each drive letter you have a $RECYCLE.BIN folder on.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi there, this has been a problem on my computer for some time.

In tools -> folder options, instead of a "Show hidden files and options", I get a long string of question marks instead. "????????"

This commonly shows up in my malwarebytes scans, and everytime I click remove selected it just comes back. It does not seem to have negatively affected my PC so I have left it alone til now.

I have attached a screenshot to show what I mean. I also have a screenshot of the malwarebytes scan if required.

Recently I downloaded a free version of AVG 8.5 and did a scan on my computer. AVG identified it as worm/VB.BSP and sent it to the 'virus vault'. After this upon rebooting my PC I got an error on startup that said 'Windows cannot find syssetup.exe'

I was also unable to open my drive E with double click, but right-clicking and pressing explore worked fine.

I have since done a reformat and the PC is back to 'normal', however the hidden folders still show '??????' as usual.

Good Morning,

I don't know what caused this but my USB 2.0 pen drive now shows up as a "folder" rather than a removable drive when using "my computer". If I double click on it, nothing happens. I can right click and get a drop down menu. Select "removable portable device" and it works OK. What is causing or caused this mess?

Thanks,

Bill

it is the way your machine decides to read the device. go into your system bios at startup and go into the USB settings menu. change the way it reads certain usb devices (as you would prefer but do not mess it up) if you mess up then restore bios defaults

I'm Running Windows 7 64 bit, Home Premium, fully updated.

On my laptop (64 bit Windows 7), "Recent Items" works properly, showing all docs I've opened only (no folders, as it should be). The taskbar Jumplists for each program also show recent docs opened in that program.

The "Recent Places" folder, however, is always empty, nor do recent folders show on the Jumplists for folders.

Searching has turned up nothing useful, but tells me I'm not the only one with this issue.

What I've tried already:sfc /scannow
making sure both the "Store and display" options in Taskbar and Start Menu Properties are checked.
making sure the reg key HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\Recent points to the correct folder (%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent Items) and that the folder itself is actually named "Recent Items" and not just "Recent"
running a disk scan
Safe mode
Essentially, it seems that documents opened are recorded but not folders. I'm stumped at this point. Anyone know what's up with this?

I read a bit about going into the bios and looking for a "memory remapping" setting but there was not one.
I also unchecked the box for max memory in msconfig > boot > advanced options.

Any suggestions would be great!

chinese symbols translates to You Flick something

have been seeing this pop up across multiple clients locations, which have nothing in common industry wise.

Webroot support so far says its not an issue "according to logs", but I beg to differ that this may be something that has yet to be detected.

So far I have deleted it from the users folder and the registry and seems to come back on reboot
webroot detects nothing and neither does malware bytes which is more concerning.

I just reinstalled Windows 7 64bit after a crash. I reconnected my second HDD to the machine where prior to the crash I stored all my photos and music.

The problem is that there appears to be no folders or files visible in the drive, despite it showing over 300GB of used space. See the attached screenshot for a better view of what I am talking about.

Drive F is the first partition on the drive
Drive G is the second partition on the drive

--Both should have a ton of data on them, but I can't see any folders.

Am I missing something stupid? I'm not panicked yet, but drive F is really important to me.

I have a strange problem with this computer running windows vista home premium x64.

If I go to C:\Windows and do a right-click on the "SchCache" folder and select properties,
the size of the folder shows 40.7 GB used.

If I try to open that folder, there is nothing in there. I have "show hidden files and folders" checked
and "hide protected operating system files" unchecked, so it's not a matter of simple hidden files.

Now it gets interesting...if I go back and try right-clicking again on the SchCache folder and select
properties, it no longer shows 40.7 GB used! It says zero bytes!

If I reboot the computer and repeat the whole procedure from the beginning, the folder properties will
return to showing a large number of gigabytes used the first time I select right-click-properties, and
then shows zero afterwards...

Malware and Spyware scans always show nothing. I've run rkill, avast, malwarebytes, tdsskiller, ETC.
and nothing is ever found.

Any ideas what is happening?

I have one folder in which I keep all my music. There are 605 items, consisting of both folders and music files.
I sort the folder by "date last saved" so that my newest songs are always at the bottom and the oldest are at the top, after the sub folders

However, whenever I open the folder, windows seems like it is re-searching and rebuilding the cache, taking upwards of 5 seconds in order for the folder to be sorted again.

This only started happening after I reinstalled windows, however that is all that has changed. My music is on another drive, the same drive that it was before I reinstalled.

Why does it keep doing this, and how do I get it to remember how it is sorted?

Attached is a video demonstrating what happens
