File Explorer: Bad hehavior when trying to resize columns (4K monitor)

Q: File Explorer: Bad hehavior when trying to resize columns (4K monitor)

I'm on Win 7 Ultimate x64.

I just upgraded to a 4K monitor, and I've read on some issues related high DPI displays, and this might be one of them. I've set the default magnification to 150% in my Windows 7 display settings. And for the most part things look ok. But I noticed some strange behavior within file explorer.

Here's an image for reference
You can see all that unnecessary extra space in the "Size" and "Date Modified" column. So naturally I try to drag the column width to make it smaller. But it wouldn't cooperate! If I try to make the Size column smaller, Explore jerks around and suddenly makes either the "Name" or "Date Modified" column bigger. Same if I try make one of the other columns smaller.

I've tried the Right click options on the columns: "Size Column to fit" and "Size all columns to fit". No good. It would still give me a bunch of unnecessary space in all columns.

This issue didn't happen on my old 1080p monitor. I can resize columns as I wished and they would behave.

Anyone have any idea what's happening and how to solve this?

A: File Explorer: Bad hehavior when trying to resize columns (4K monitor)

Have you tried specifying an exact size for columns?
Right click on the column header
Choose "More..." from the context menu
Click on the header you wish to set
Type the desired value in the box at the bottom

If that works, set your Folder Template so Windows will remember the settings.

Because of limited desk space, I have to use one of my monitors in portrait mode.....however, due to the widescreen aspect ratio, my horizontal resolution is slightly too narrow for an internet browser.

What I would like to adjust somehow, either through Windows 7 or through the Nvidia display control panel is to either reduce the pixels the image or window takes up, or if I have to, change the resolution. Does Windows 7 allow for such a modification to its windows. The browser is Firefox if that makes a difference.

I modified the resolution to give me a better fit-

from 1440x900
to 1280x1024

Unfortunately, that is as far as it will let me go. Another 100-200 pixels would be ideal, but this is more workable. Open to suggestions.

Is it possible to make the columns I choose to view stay put in Windows 7 Windows Explorer? I've tried turning the library view off. I still get a narrow view in the right pane showing the libraries and a huge preview pane. I want to expand the first column to show my selections, e.g. file type, date, etc., then stay put. I drag the little line out each time expanding my file view/details pane, but each time it pops back to the narrow library view. Thanks in advance.

In Windows Explorer under XP, all file types had the same basic set of columns... File name/date modified/file type/size. This is mostly true with Windows 7, but I notice that with certain file types such as mp3s, wavs and jpegs, Microsoft have tried to be clever and choose columns more appropriate to the file type. So mp3s now default to name/#/title/contributing artist/album.

My question is: are these defaults user accessible?

I'm a photographer and I have about 100 folders containing jpegs. I'd like to change the columns currently shown, but I don't want to have to change 100 folders individually.....

Hi Astronautilus and welcome to Seven Forums.

Yes you can do this. Below is ashort tutorial on how to change it for the documents folder template. You can do the same for any other folder type.

The folder before change.

With a new column added

Open the Folder and Search options.

On the view tab press the Apply to folders button.

My company uses a proprietary software program that works through Internet Explorer. Recently, the IT department has made a change to the software to keep Internet Explorer locked to cover the entire screen (but not necessarily in "full screen" mode), with no ability to resize it. For the department I run it is very important to be able to resize these windows so that you can have multiple views of Internet Explorer showing at once. In order to combat this, in Internet Explorer 7.0.5730.11 I simply instructed my employees to use the "F11" key to jump Internet Explorer into "full screen" mode, then press it once again to get it out of "full screen" mode. After this they were able to resize the window.

Recently they have upgraded some of the systems to Internet Explorer 7.0.6001.18000, and for some reason my work around does not allow users on this version to resize the window. The "F11" trick still puts the window into full screen mode, and takes it back out, of course, but it does not give them the ability to resize the window.

Any suggestions on how I could fix this, or any suggestions on other potential work arounds to get the window to be able to resize in the newer version? Perhaps tricks you have found resizing internet windows that lock the ability? I have verified that none of the settings have changed between the older and newer versions.

A:Internet Explorer 7 - Resize Workaround?

Welcome to TSF

You will probably have to speak to the IT department to get them to remove this change in the software, from what it sounds like it is a registry edit.

How do you close the window, I was playing around with these options and if it were locked as you say to "full screen" there is no red X to exit the window

In Windows Explorer in Windows 7 I like to use the Details view. I have set of columns/headings that I prefer to use. The problem is I would like to set these columns up and have them be the default for every folder I open. As it is now every folder I open I have to customize the columns again. They stay for that folder but every new folder requires me to customize. Is there a default option so that I can set what I want and have it apply to every folder?

I just installed Windows 7 a few days ago. Prior to this I had XP on the machine that 7 is now on. I did not use Explorer in XP I used a different file manager. I did this mainly for the split view. Now that 7 as the snap feature getting two panes is easy with Explorer so I am going to give it a try for a while. Thanks.

First post, hi.

I downloaded Windows 10 on release and despite its flaws, I actually like it.

I am finding an issue with Explorer though. I've noticed that the preview image icon for folders doesn't resize itself to fit within the folder preview section, so if the image I want to show as a preview on that folder icon is tiny, it'll show as being tiny in the preview with loads of blank space around it, for larger images it does seem to fit in, though if the image is longer than it is wide than it'll cut the bottom bit off. This wasn't the case in previous versions of Windows and I presume it can be tweaked in the registry.

Any help appreciated. I'm using a 4K monitor and Microsoft have improved the scaling in this OS, but it's still not exactly brilliant. Third party software is the main culprit tbf.

As the title says.

I was messing around with some custom themes (I know, I know, but I'm pretty familiar with the process and I try to take extra precautions) and for what seems like no reason, I cannot resize Explorer (not IE, the actual file explorer) windows and if I attempt to use Aero Snap, absolutely nothing happens--I can maximize, minimize, etc. though. However, if I use any other program, I can resize and I can do snap, so obviously the problem is only with Windows Explorer. I figured I would do a system restore because that has solved any customization problems I've had 99% of the time, but even that doesn't fix my issue.

Another weird issue (besides System Restore not doing anything) is that I even installed another custom theme because I figure that whatever files it gave me would probably fix up the explorer issue--and now the theme is installed but I still can't resize or use snap on Explorer.

Doing a clean install or what have you is NOT an option, so does anyone know what may have been changed and how I can fix it?

How about installing a normal theme?

This happened for many years until a few days ago:
In Windows Explorer (in Windows 7), when I click on a folder on the left side of the screen, four columns are displayed on the right side of the screen: Name, Date modified, Size, Type; and the scroll bar is on the far right side of the screen. All is good.

Now when I click on a folder on the left side of the screen, the same four columns are displayed on the right side of the screen, but the scroll bar on the right side of the screen has shifted far to the left so that only some of the characters of the Name field are displayed; the rest of the name and the other three columns are hidden. I can move the scroll bar to the far right side of the screen (where it used to be), but the next time I open Windows Explorer, the scroll bar has shifted to the left side of the screen again, covering up columns' displays, so I have to manually move the scroll bar to the far right side of the screen again.

How do I get the scroll bar to stay on the far right side of the screen like it used to?
And why did it change? Did I do something inadvertently?

Hello all, I hope you had a great xmas/family time

I had been having plenty of "not responding" apps and windows, so I did some registry clean thing online.

Im not sure that caused the second problem, but its really weird and Ive never seen it before, in "details view", there is only an icon for each file/folder, but no name, no columns of any kind, just blank. If I RH mouse click where the column name would be, I see a blank where there would be a list of columns to add or remove. Then when I choose "More..." there is NOTHING in the list of potential other columns!

The weirdest part, this only happens sometimes / to certain folders, I am not sure which and I will keep a diary now... but I would love to sort it out but dont know where to start.

How can I reduce the file to make it more manageable, this size is a killer on system resources. The file contains many pictures, is there a way to break them out into individual pictures (without doing it 1 at a time)...maybe into a Powerpoint presentation?

Meanwhile find and download the latest video driver at Toshiba's site. When the SFC is done, uninstall the existing video driver and install the new one.

I want to set up a foldertemplate with specific foldercolums like:
- document-id
- client-id
- title
- date
- author
- name
- origin
- ...

I can do this very easely, but i can't add data corresponding the columns to a file.

The goal is to have a list of different file-types like word, excel, pdf, ... in one folder. Those files have to contain the information corresponding the columns, e.g.:

"A.1.1 _ P090402/1 _ title of the original file _ 27/06/1950 _ CocaCola _ windows-name _ mail etc"

This seems to be impossible because every file is different: the one let you insert one of the specifications (but often not all...), the other doesn't accept changes (like pdf).

Do you know a work arround or a tweak?

A:Can I add specifications to any file corresponding the folder columns?

Sorry, I do not think there are workarounds or tweaks.
Microsoft chopped off even file commenting function in Vista and 7.

Partial solution would be 3rd party tagging apps.
But they usually have their own GUI and store your "tags" in a separate file/database.

Check out this article.
There are more programs like that. They are usually discussed in threads where people asking for file commenting function in Win 7 (the way it existed in XP).

I plugged a friends Seagate Expansion drive (SRD00F1) into my machine's usb port, Windows Vista started to load the drivers and then says success. I went to My Computer and the machine can't see the drive. After this I started to see the following occurring:

1) Explorer shows no filenames or folder names. If I click on the file to rename, the name is there, but when I close that, the name disappears.
2) All the normal column names in Explorer details view are gone, "Author" is the only one showing. All of the common ones are unavailable when I try to choose details by right clicking the column header, Filename, Size, Date Created/Accessed/Modified etc...
3) Many windows won't open, specifically Control Panel windows like "Backup and Restore Center", System, regedit.exe.
4) The "Start Search" feature of the Start Bar returns nothing. I found out later, No searches work.
5) In My computer the sizes of the drives and free space are in bytes, not KB or MB.
I've done a complete Virus scanning ticket with Broni:
I've tried running SFC many times, SFC says errors fixed, but the CBS.log is repeating the same errors every time.

When i paste the values in the new sheet to be saved as the text file I need to transpose the paste so row 1 now will be in column A. The filename would be created from the value in Column A. I have uploaded some example files. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The bonus would be if i could get any empty spaces removed from the cells.

I tried modifying some code that Jimmy the Hand wrote linked here
with no luck.

I have problem with Windows 7 folder/file listing behavior.
I 'appliy to folders' to my liking(view -> details) but Windows 7 keep changing its file listing to certain folders.
for example.. currently listed with columns
Name | Date modified | Type | Size (+ other options.. applied to all folders)

BUT if 1 folder has too many MP3/Video file(or any type of 1 similar file types) Folder setting reconfigs itself to something like this
Name | # | Title | Cont. artists | Album (it also changed initial 'sort by' & 'group by' settings. it actually removed/unchecked those settings.)

Forgot to mention that these *changed itself* folders were initially displayed correctly.
is there any way to fix this problem?
Thanks in advance. (sorry about ninja edit)

Hi Gurus,

I have many excel files containing similar data.

1. I want to copy specific columns (columns A to U) from all files and paste the consolidated data into another excel file.

2. I also want to copy specific columns (columns C,D,E,G,H,K,L,T,V,W,X,Y) and paste the consolidated data in a different excel.

Please help.

I started out with the two previous posts about macros (post 1, post 2) that move rows into columns, but I'm having a little trouble getting it to work for what I need. First, I'm trying to do a data merge into Word, but in order to get the data merge to work/look the way I want it to, I need the XLS data to be in columns.

I'm attaching an example file that has one worksheet of the sample data (though my "real" data has about 300 rows) and the other worksheet is an example of the outcome I need.

Is there anyway I can do what I need? Exporting into another file or another worksheet within this file would be fine.

Thanks in advance.

I have been working on a project for a few weeks and I could really use some help. I'm attaching a dummy file (example1) that is an example of how my XLS comes to me each month.

I need a macro that leaves me with the second file (example2). If the macro could just grab the Student name, then put the following info for each student all on 1 row, that would be perfect:

Child's Name | Date In | Time In | Rounded | Time Out | Rounded

Sometimes for some reason there is a student with a (Cont) after their name. I need that row deleted and just pull the times up onto the same row as other times. The example2 file might make sense.

Here are the steps I am doing manually that I hope a macro could do for me!
Un-merge cells: B10
Un-merge any cells with a child's name such as Doe, Jane
Delete any row with a childs name that has (Cont) after it such as Doe, Jane (Cont)
Delete rows: 1-9
Delete columns: A, C, F, H, I, J, M, N, O, and P
Manually move all info up to one row per student
Delete all empty rows below
See example2 as the completed file but I only moved a few of the rows per student for the sake of time.

Is there any way to do all of this with a macro?

I'm about to tear out my hair. First Windows Explorer keeps stopping, searches for solution then restarts. About the time this problem, I noticed that Windows Explorer will change the original creation date on some of my files. It might be all files in folder or just certain types. I've yet to make a connection with when this is happening or what is causing it. Not necessarily when Windows Explorer stops. It's difficult when you can't tell which is the oldest/newest file in a folder.

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, which I keep updated, McAfee, AntiMalware Bytes and SuperAntiSpyware, also all updated.

I'm begging! Can someone help me please?

No matter how many times I reset file explorer in Windows 10, browsing through folder will open multiple windows and not keep the same windows at all. WTF? Is it this hard to get a basic god damn app to behave normally? Browsing through my D$ drive will spawn multiple windows. Or browsing through C$ will open the same window for the first folder then pop open a new window for anything else.

Anyone else having this issue? Any fix? Restoring defaults does nothing. I just want to keep the same window open for everything. I don't want to have multiple instances of file explorer windows while browsing. There used to be a target shortcut you could place in the shortcut of file explorer that would help out with this. Can anyone help?

I use Windows 8.1.

Until few days ago, everything was working fine. No idea what happened but whenever I open the File Explorer/Windows Explorer, it always opens minimized. Earlier I just needed to maximize it and close it so that when the next time I open it, it opens maximized. But when I do that now, it still opens minimized.

Not just that. I like to have my files and folders view to be as "large icons". But, its all in "details" view now. Earlier if something like this happened, I would change it once to "large icons" and it remained intact upon my viewing next time. However, it doesn't happen now. Inspite of changing the view settings to "large icons", they still open "details" view.

Any idea, how to solve both the issues? It would be very helpful.

Can this effect be disabled? I'm sure somebody at MS thought it was slick idea, but it just gives me a headache. I haven't found a setting that controls it -- maybe I'm looking in the wrong spot. (Am guessing, while this isn't an "animation" per se, it's in the same general category.)

In windows Explorer files of the extention .avi will have an icon that is that little film strip with a screen shot from the video file. Matroska files (.mkv) only show a generic icon in explorer? How can i fix this so that the Matroska file will show the screen shot from the video file as is does with avi files in windows explorer? I have Home Premium? Thanks:)

A:Matroska File to show screen shot as icon like an avi file does in explorer

I wrote a similar post about mov files in here
Have a quick read at it (to understand what you're doing and why it's the way it is), then grab some matroska directshow filters. There's a list here:

P.S: Keep in mind the filter sparses the mkv file only (aka the container), it does not decode the audio or video stream inside of it. If you're only getting a filter but can't see the video, it would be because you're missing the codec (compressor-decompressor) for the video stream. I'm mentioning it because mkv files are usually encoded using codecs for which the avi container is not suitable (for example H.264 or AC3). If that's the problem, be sure to get codecs too (for example ffdshow-tryouts for H.264, or AC3filter for AC3).

Basically the title. Almost every single time i move ANY file or delete any file, the window im in freezes and the progress bar freezes. Now when i create a new folder the window im in freezes also, but i'd say its only 50% of the time. The temporary solution i found was to go to the task bar, end explorer, and restart it using run. Now when i check back on that folder, whatever action I did (ie delete file) does do what i wanted, its just the freezing. I'm looking for a permanent solution to this and any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi erod49, try looking in your error logs. You have given a good discription of the problem. Tel us your system specs as well.

To get into your error logs,

Left Click on Start Menu.
Right click on Computer and choose manage.
Click on the event viewer.
You now have loads of options to try and pin down what is happening.
Expand the error tab.
Look for things in the last 24 hours.

Other things to look for are updates, has an update caused this. Has your computer autoupdated any of the motherboard drivers.
Have you tried to restore the computer before the error started or has it always been like that.

Not sure if this is an annoying bug that everyone knows about by now, but I'm hoping there's a setting or registry value I've overlooked.

Here is how to reproduce and some loverly pictures.

1. Open File Explorer to a folder with multiple files and select one with left click.
2. Right click on that same file and you'll get your normal context menu.

3. However, if you right click any other folder or file besides the already selected ones, you will clear the selection and not get the context menu for the file or folder that you right-clicked on.
In previous versions File Explorer behaved rationally and a selection event was presumed when right-clicking an unselected item.

Are we out of luck until MS fixes this or is there a remedy?

As you can imagine I cant paste that into a save as field and expect it find the folder location.

Does someone know if it can do what I want? keeping in mind this is about time saving and productivity exercise so I need a simple solution. It is also on a work computer so a lot of settings are locked.

If I use other programs to view file in original location, I can sometimes get it open. I can also get it open if I type c: in the search box. However, if I use these methods and dare to right-click, it immediately crashes.

Hello Everyone,

I have kind of an odd question, I have been looking into changing file type icons when I came across an interesting conflict.
I would like to be able to change the file type icon for all .exe files to the same file type icon within a file explorer. If you were to try to do this, all icons that are associated with each .exe program becomes the same icon no matter where they are located.

The thing is that usually when I am in a file explorer the .exe files are installers and when I have .exe files in places like on my desktop, in the start menu, and in the taskbar, they are for launching already installed programs.

Can anyone think of a possibly way that could solve this conflict easily with some kind of setting or software.

I thought maybe something with shortcuts but that turned out to not work for me.
I also believe that .ico icon files have multiple sizes within them but I don't think there would be a realistic way to edit each of them for all the programs installed.

Has anyone else ever tried something like this? or have any solutions that I am not aware of?
Thank You

A:Changing .exe File Type Icons In File Explorer But Nowhere Else

File Explorer is on Windows 8/8.1, renamed from Windows Explorer on Windows 7 back to Windows95/Windows NT4.

Usually an .exe file for running a program will have its own icon, right-click a Shortcut, Properties, Change Icon to see what the .exe file has in it. Some programs may have a separate icon in their Folder in C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86). If no icons are found Windows will put up a panel with a number of choices but they are more generic, mostly for Windows things.

Installable .exe files will have more of a generic icon and are of only a few types.

I have a lot of music files. I have ended up with many duplicates, perhaps because when I was learning Windows I didn't quite understand the filing system. To date, I am not sure I do! The column # which states the 'Track Number' which to me is undesirable (I have no use for it), seems to be my problem! When there is a track number - it seems to put it first before all else in the 'Title', namely before the title of the song or the name of the Band.... thereby sorting instead of the title of the song, it sorts by the Track number. Even if I change the defaults and take out the Track # column, it doesn't seem to make a difference when sorting - it still insists on sorting by Track number. The only way I can change this, it seems, is by going into each and every individual file property and physically changing this! I hasve already put many hours into this, and it still seems to be an overwhelming job! Is this not what computers are for, to make life easier.

I would look for a free audio file tag editor. Many will process in batch mode. I haven't used one in a few years so I am not up on the current features. You might find comparisons of the utilities in places like or just search on "best free Windows tag editor". I have a nice sort tool called Fat Sorter but it only works on FAT partitions. The idea being to force a USB stick to sort according to file name. I don't know if there is a similar utility for NTFS.

As soon as the OS installed, I automated a bat file which would do the following things.
* Disable UAC Policy
* Disable IPv6 by changing the registry.
* Delete local Admin account by logging into domain Administrator account(In AutoUnattend, I will do a auto login command, which do a auto login with domain administrator and run a bat file which will do these steps)

Now, Could you please let me know why the libraries are not functioning properly and what is the reason behind broken links? I am confident that it is not happening due to the batch file or is it so?
Also, I have checked the Ease of Access Center under Control Panel.  Remove Background images check box is not selected.
Thanks, Please let me know this as soon as possible.

I just bought a nice new widescreen monitor. This site seems to work in widescreen just fine but other sites (yahoo etc) seem to still be in a box type shape. How do I make them go widescreen? I'm running Vista and IE7 if it matters.

P.S I'm a new guy here so forgive me if this is in the wrong board

A:Internet explorer + new widescreen monitor

Welcome to BC

Some sites (like Yahoo, MSN etc) hard code the width of their content. So you are out of luck for those web sites.
Other websites which dynamically resize according to the screen, are going to fill your widescreen monitor.

Have a nice day.

Hi all
So I'm not very computer savvy and have long past given up on trying to answer my own questions on google, so now I am here. Please excuse my dumbness!

My issue is my file explorer is in jumbo size, full screen, all up in my face kinda action and whenever I try to minimise the screen size it curls up into a little box in the top left, blinks a bunch of times and then crashes. I'm sure someone must have delt with this in the past (or at least I hope)

It looks a just like this, with lots of blinking..

Me think it broke?

A:File explorer, or file exploder?

Sorry, I should say that happens when resizing, not minimising.

Good MOrning,

I am facing a problem to delete a file.
The file stay in use for explorer.exe even after finish the action.
The application works like this:

1.exe opens file 2.exe and close file file 1.exe
this is necessary for our needs.
When I close the file 2.exe it verify if the file 1.exe is the most recenty version with the server, if not , it is replaceded for a new one file 1.exe.
The new file is not been copied because the file 1.exe ( old ) keep in use for the explorer.exe, if I end the explorer.exe proccess, the copy of the new file occurr normally.
Someone knows how to clean the files in use for the explorer.exe ?
the proccess have to be automatic, I already tried some options over the internet without success.
Sorry for my bad english.
Thanks in advance

Using Eventghost I have setup a command to open a Video folder on monitor 2 (HDMI connected Sony Bravia)
I also have installed and use Display Fushion to manage my monitors.
My problem is that Windows Explorer seems to want to remember its last opened location so that I now find even if I open any other folder on my PC it displays straight to my TV screen (Monitor 2).
Only after dragging the opened folder back to my PC monitor and then closing it all other folders open as normal on my PC but also the programmed Eventghost macro video folder. This fails to open on TV unless dragged back to TV and then I?m back to the problem again of all folders opening on TV.
I basically just want Eventghost to do its thing without Windows then remembering and making all future folders opening on Monitor 2 (TV).
Hope I?ve explained this clearly enough.

A:Stop Windows Explorer remembering the last monitor is was opened on

Solved my own problem so though I'd write for others just in case.

Installed free software called MultiMonitor, this gives the option of creating a command line to switch connected monitor off and on.

When in the off state folders open normally on PC, switch monitor back on and the folder dedicated to open on connected monitor still does.

The computer would randomly go to a black screen when working. After using software at my disposal, I found there to be a monitor.sys dump file that is causing the problem. What would be the root cause of this and could I fix it?

Or could this be the actual hardware that is throwing the dump file? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have a problem which many others seem to be having with Vista. Apologies for the long thread, but just wanted to provide all of the information as I was up till 5am trying to solve this and getting a bit desperate!

I've got a new Samsung monitor to replace my old generic PnP TFT monitor. Updated my ATI graphics card drivers, as I haven't updated them in a while. Hooked the Samsung monitor up, installed the drivers, restarted it, changed resolution and now the computer now just keeps giving me various blue screen crashes. They have been a few different ones from:

Error with sys32

It is now just mainly giving me this error:
IRQL_Not_Less_Or_Equal or Driver_IRQL_Not_Less_Or_Equal

I don't know if it is a virus, the new graphics card drivers, or the new monitor drivers. I have tried uninstalling the latest ATI graphic card drivers and going back to my original version, but this didn't help.

I've noticed when it lets me get into Windows, it crashes when I try to access the log files in the winevt folder, or when the memory dump folder is around four hundred MB, it doesn't even let me load up Vista in any mode. Deleting the log files through CMD in the Repair mode helps.

On the few occasions it does let me load Vista up, I get this Windows error pop-up:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.0.6001.
Locale ID: 2057

Hi, in our company we have a problem on several machines and we need to monitor some workstations to guess which applications write several folders (with chinese characters that stop backup process), and for that purpose i've been looking for an application.

First I found was Process Monitor, it works quite well, but the log it generates is really huge (gigabytes) even filtering only desired events (file/folder writing on a specific drive), and i'm looking for Reliabilty Monitor that comes with Windows Vista to setup that event logging, but I find no help on that windows feature nor I know if it can be done.

Do you know how to manage to do this with Reliabilty Monitor or other utility that monitors file system activity?

A:File monitor application

If you want to monitor a file/folder on a drive I would think that process monitor would be the choice. You can get a process (application) activity summary at any time by clicking tools on the menu bar, then selecting process activity summary. This will show which applications have written to the file/folder at that point of time.

Of course, you would have to filter by 'path is' which it sound like you are doing. I have attached a copy of the process activity summary below:

Hi everybody,

On the laptop listed in my sig, Windows Explorer will crash and reset itself while trying to load the Reliability Report from the Windows Action Center. This just started today and doesn't happen every single time when generating the report. It only happens when I exit out of the report and then reload it very fast by pressing the back and forward keys in quick succession on my mouse. When I do this, the window will hang on the screen with the green loading bar that says "Reliability Monitor is generating the report. Please wait..." and a new popup will appear telling me that Windows Explorer has crashed and is resetting itself. I would be very grateful if somebody can please interpret the error report of this incident and tell me how I can fix the problem.

A:Reliability Monitor crashes Windows Explorer, event name BEX64

Please provide us with your Event Viewer administrative logs by following these steps:Click Start Menu
Type eventvwr into Search programs and files (do not hit enter)
Right click eventvwr.exe and click Run as administrator
Expand Custom Views
Click Administrative Events
Right click Administrative Events
Save all Events in Custom View As...
Save them in a folder where you will remember which folder and save as Errors.evtx
When asked, save the display information in English.
Go to where you saved Errors.evtx
Create a new folder by right clicking in a blank area within the folder Errors.evtx is saved in. You could also click New Folder at the top of the directory under the directory path box.
Name the new folder Errors.
Place Errors.evtx and the LocaleMetaData folder into the new Errors folder.
Right click the Errors folder -> send to -> compressed (zipped) folder
Upload the .zip file here.
The faulting module does not appear to be a system file, so I suspect a 3rd party application or service is conflicting with explorer.exe; Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup.

I realize there are many posts on this issue. When I click a Word 2007 document in Windows Explorer, I get the message "Windows cannot open the file (path\name) make sure...etc." Word opens but file does not. With Word open, clicking brings up another instance of Word (without file) and same error. Same as other posts on this issue. Issue does not occur with any other files (Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Acrobat, etc.) Happens with only Word extensions (docx, etc.) If I open Word and open the file from inside Word, all is fine.

I tried saving documents in different Word extensions, saving to different locations, but still get the error--only when opening directly from Explorer or Desktop. I have repaired Office 2007 (Ultimate Version), uninstalled Word, reinstalled Word; tried the registry fix posted here and MS site (removing Data reg entry under Word). Used tool posted here to unassociate/reassociate .docs with Word. I reimaged my hard drive using an image from two weeks ago, but apparently it started before that, because I still get the same error. I reset my index and waited for it to regenerate. I'm sure there might be other solutions I've tried, but these are the ones that come to mind.

It is a three-week-old Dell 1545 laptop, 64-bit Vista. Not impossible to live with, but has me stumped. According to all the posts in networld and here, fairly common problem that seems to have no single solution.

If anyone knows of new tips, I'd sure appreciate it.

A:Windows cannot find file path\file name when opening from Windows Explorer

Error is "cannot find (path\name)...before someone yells. Also, thorough scan for malicious software, trojans, etc. Do not have BSPlayer, whatever that is. Also, if I search for the document in the menu, I can't open it from there either.

I have a Toshiba Notebook freezing while connected via a wireless network, while playing MP3s via Windows Media Player V10.0. The music files are stored on a SONY VAIO on the network. The Toshiba appears to be timing out on a TCP/IP (Network message response request). So I look at the "Application Event Viewer" on the remote (SONY) system to see what is going on and discover the following in the log: Event Type:

Event Category: (8)
Event ID: 19011
Date: 2/16/2006
Time: 2:06:56 PM
User: N/A
Computer: SONYVAIO1
The description for Event ID ( 19011 ) in Source ( MSSQL$VAIO_VEDB ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: (SpnRegister) : Error 1355.

Everytime I find this warning in the log I find the following info message preceding the warning:
Event Type: None
Event Source: Adobe Active File Monitor
Event Category: Devices
Event ID: 2570
Date: 6/1/2006
Time: 11:11:16 PM
User: N/A
Computer: SONYVAIO1
Adobe Active File Monitor Service has Started.

There are other services started as well in and around the warning.

What is the Adobe Active File Monitor??????

A:Adobe Active File Monitor

Here's a link to what it is.
You could always disable this service if you suspect it's causing a problem from administrative tools>services.

Hey guys, I just signed in to this wonderful place you have here so first power to you all for keeping the community alive and kicking!

I was wondering if anyone can help me out with something:

I'm the IT manager of a big Hotel(170 PC'S) and lately i've been running out of disc space on the DC.
Problem is that sometimes one of my users uploads to the network some heavy sized files which are not always necessary and i wish i could find a way to monitor this without installing a third party application(due to our strict installation standards) .

Any ideas friends?

I have an interesting thread going on at the moment about task manager appearing once each time I boot up.

No solution as of yet, assuming all attempts are exhausted.

But it brings me to an idea for a utility out there somewhere.

So does anyone know of any utility, that will allow a person to select a file(s), and tell them when and how it was executed each time?

I would think by this day and age, there just might be such a utility.

A:Utility to monitor when a file is started

I work with a Dell D620 laptop, and I use different monitor settings depending on where I'm at. At work, I use a docking station with dual monitors so I don't use the laptop screen itself. At home, I use the laptop screen and a widescreen monitor and on the road I use the laptop itself. For some reason, Windows likes to use the last settings I used (except when I don't hook up any monitor), so I have to change the settings everyday at work and at home.
Is there a way to save the settings in a file and just run that file to load the settings? Maybe make two different config files for home and office and just run them.
Many people at work are starting to like this setup, and we need a easy fix for those that are not computer savvy.

A:Is there a way to save monitor settings to a file?

Left click in the open area of the screen to pull up the display properties.

Go to the Themes tab.

Click the Save As... button and save your settings.

Modify any settings you need to change (like how many monitors are active & etc) then go back to the Themes tab and do the Save As to a different name.

Now you cna switch between the two settings by going into the Display properties and selecting the theme you want from the Theme Pull Down

(don't forget to click "Apply" or "OK")

I have a new monitor (From Belinea). The manufacturers supply the .inf file and a couple of others (unsure if relevant: a .cat and .icm file). All now shoved on C drive now in a temp directory.

I run the "update device driver" and "install from a specific location". I chose the driver to install (a monitor), I "have disk" and tell it where to get the .inf file which I then click on to open.

All good so far.
"Please wait while the wizard installs this software.."

"There was a problem installing this hardware Belinea xyz.."... "An error occcurred during the installation of the device, the system cannot find the file specified".

So that's it. When I look at the device manager list, the driver for the Belinea monitor has a yellow "!" mark over it, and by right clicking then "general" tells me that "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver."

So my driver is not installed. If I try reinstalling, the same happens.

So what's up?

A:.inf file insufficient for monitor driver?

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Have you searched on the manufacturers site for a driver?
Try placing the drivers on your desktop in a folder.
