I have downloaded a program called 'Unassociate File Types' however i am not very clever and i don't really know what to get rid of.

pushing the 'windows' key should bring up the start menu--which should allow access to the control panel--then remove the 'customization' software.

A few weeks ago I upgraded to Windows 10 after which Windows Live Mail and Photo Gallery wouldn't operate fully. Windows 10 also wouldn't recognize my Media Storage Card Reader. I reverted back to Windows 7 and now I can't send e-mails using Live Mail
and Photo Gallery shuts down after a few minutes . I've tried to un-install and re-install Windows Essentials but it wont un-install.

Hey Tech Buddy,

I have an HP zv6130us that is running slow and having shell pars show up. Last week I ran Hi-Jack this and removed several items as per instructions. They're back! I still run Norton, Spysweeper, Spybot, Xoftspy, Ad Aware and WinClean Ultra Utility Suite. Plus I defrag. Nothing comes up when I run these. Here is a Hi-Jack log from this morning. Please give a look and let me know what to do.

Thank you,

So, I encountered the Warcraft III 'Unable to initialize base sound services, sound is disabled.' error about 2 hours ago. I never saw it before so I looked it up to see if there was any easy solutions, and not seeing any I restarted doubting it would take anything more than that.

Begin the woes. It now crashes during the splash screen, gives a blue screen that goes by too quick to read and then restarts going to the Start Windows Normally/Safe Mode screen and loops continuously. I can't use my keyboard at this screen so I can't try Safe Mode or last configuration.

Other issue that's blocking me from fixing this: The Windows CD, and a Recovery Console iso(left over for when I had to use it the last time something like this happened), won't boot. Or rather, they won't boot unless my hard drive is disconnected.

Not to come to a doctor and suggesting my own treatment, but maybe if I could get my keyboard to work during the Start Windows Normally screen? I read that it's because it doesn't boot before something or some such. I am able to get to the BIOS and use the keyboard there, is there something I can change to prioritize its booting?

Possibly pertinent: During one of the several bootups chkdsk started to run and completed successfully finding nothing wrong. By 'nothing wrong' I mean it didn't delete anything like it usually does when it happens.

My new laptop came with 8 and I did a clean install of 8.1 to get rid of the bloatware. That was a few months ago and I still hate it. It's slow and it's not my computer. When I go into Task Manager there seems to be way too much stuff running compared to what I'd see in 7.
But, now that 10 is out..which doesn't look too appealing with all the horror stories and crashes everyone seems to have.. it seems like 7 is too "old" and I need to get over it and get used to this new style eventually.

Maybe I should just reinstall 8.1 and customize it to death?  I can't decide.

A:Should I just go back to Windows7?

G'day WTFGuise, and Welcome to BC

I agree....that is a hard one.....

I loved 7, disliked 8 and 8.1....even with the customizations to make it "feel like" 7.....it still was just not 'right'.....

Win 10 certainly shows some promise....although the experiences vary incredibly !!.......maybe the "update" due early in October will set the situation right. Many people will 'sit on the fence' until then .

My biggest problem with win 10 is the privacy issue....it is real, and to me that matters a great deal.

You will find many varied opinions about that HERE

You do have another alternative.....Linux.  It takes a bit of wrapping your mind around.....but once you have become used to the 'lingo' it is not nearly as intimidating as it at first appears.

I have a number of PC's running.....Linux Mint, Windows 10, Win 7 and a few others.....

By far the fastest is Linux Mint.

Hope this gives you something to think about.

Hi...

I am on Windows 7 Professional, 64 bit.
i7 processor with 12 gb ram
10k rpm Sata 3 boot drive
Graphic Designer using Photoshop and Illustrator, and a variety of other programs.

I have used Memeo Backup Pro in the past for backing up my files INSTANTLY upon saving the file.... I liked that it did that. Not into waiting till the end of the day for a scheduled backup to run; I've lost too many files in the past due to corruption after working on them for an hour or less....

I would lose a LOT of productivity if I got hosed after working on a complex Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop file if it crashed after working on it for even a half hour.

I save often, and Memeo saves a backup to my predetermined destination drive instantly. HOWEVER.... Memeo is buggy as heck and it has screwed with programs and caused Windows 7 functionality problems....

So... I am wanting to try another, similar backup program that might have better user reviews. Can you help? I tried a demo of Live Backups and it sucked... couldn't even get it to work after setting up the parameters .... Thanks for suggestions.

I have or had a raid(0) config on a dell xps 400 which I just updated all system drivers and programs. It has 2 seagate 160 g sata drives. One Failed and XP Pro would not boot past the windows screen. After resetting system one of the drives had an error message and system would no longer boot. I have a backup and really dont care about the drives other than the 10 hours its gonna take me to reinstall operating system, Adobe Suite, Office Suite, Quickbooks etc.

My question is can I just remove the 2 drives and replace it with one 500 g internal drive sata drive. Also the sata interface my other drives had were sata-150, i think the newer ones are sata-300. Do I need to be concerned about this or will it just be slower?

If I can replace with 1 big drive do I just install XP from cd, then do windows update, install updated drivers, then install my productivity software? or is there more to it than that since it was originally raid(0)?

Thanx for any help

A:Relacing Raid(0) Config

This should be possible.
You need to change the BIOS options to ATA for the new drive. The manual is here:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xps400/sm/syssetup.htm#wp1043338
This happened to me, and I've given up on RAID 0 for any OS drive, or important files.

Well I guess it wasn't tough enough!

Unless there is something proprietary on the Drive I do not see why you would. To be safe check either with Toshiba, or the HD vendor of choice to see if the new drive you select is compatible.

I have an HP Compaq dx2000mt desktop that has windows7 32bit enterprise installed on it. I tried to install windows7 home 32bit to replace the enterprise OS. As I was installing it stated the old OS would be marked, XXX.old and it went forward, then came to a point where there were booting errors. and it stopped installing. Now I am left with a half install, and a full OS the boot section now in its own drive named disk 0 system reserved.
I partioned the C drive and allocated 20gb and tried to install there. I received the same errors seems that my boot.ini is stuck in the system reserved and I cant figure out how to incorporate disk 0 over to disk C, so that my boot is in the same disk drive.
I have really messed this one up. I have installed an operating system before and never had so much trouble.
Any advice would be helpful.

Please consider these two keys:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders]

What is the main difference between these?

Say,
I've changed first the keys under Shell Folders and then under User Shell Folders.
It was only until I'd changed those under User Shell Folders (after restarting the machine) did the changes take place.
Shell Folders seem not to be taking effect at all.

I run a windows version of GMAKE (the compilation program for Java), but since most of the programs are written on a Solaris machine, all the commands are UNIX commands ('mv' instead of 'move', for example). So can anyone please help me? I'm willing to try anything as long it's not gonna cost me!

A:Help fixing windows shell!!!

That's a problem? Geez, people must have the most remarkably stress free lives if they really think that's worth worrying about it!

If you have literally tried everything I would suggest that this is a system artifact that may never be solved. It looks however like you may have a stray graphic or an incorrectly measured border somewhere so I'm afraid the only answer is to go through the style line by line (starting with the most likely candidates obviously) until you find it. Given that that's likely to be an extremely long and tedious process I'd go for the standard answer myself: it's not an error, it's a feature!

Hi,

I've been getting some weird behaviour on my fully patched up to date XP laptop. The Taskbar will become "stuck" in that I cannot access anything on it (or if it is hidden I cannot un-hide it). The clock will stick as well. I can however continue working using Alt+Tab to move between open applications and bringing up Task Manager so that I can start new tasks. Sometimes, after 10 minutes or so, I will then get control of the taskbar back, only for it to then get stuck again some time later. I seem to be able to cause it to happen by trying to paste something onto my desktop.

I use AVG free and I ran malwarebytes to see if it found anything. It did find some problems:

Open any folder, click on "File" and you find "Windows Power Shell." It's designed mostly for network controllers. Has anybody found any useful commands or programs for it?

A:Windows Power Shell

Powershell has been around for quite a long time but in Windows 8, especially Server, it's the primary administration console. There are two interfaces for Powershell, the 'standard' UI, which is what you've found and the Powershell ISE (Integrated Scripting Environment) which can be found in Control Panel/Administrative Tools. Either can be launched directly by using WinKey+R. For more information, take a look at the following:

Windows PowerShell Support
Powershell.com

The 'standard' Powershell' console is a good replacement for the usual command prompt.

A shell folder integrating a view of WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) into explorer.

While other views over WMI are primary focused on getting you started with some scripts (a worthy goal), this project is more centered around showing WMIs datapoints to a normal user. There's a lot of really cool stuff in WMI - so why should you need to write script to see it?

WMI Information can be really useful and sometimes show usually unavailable information in Windows.

Initially, it will be a simple browser over WMI, but specialized views of some of the datapoints and segmenting it into areas that should be indexed.

   Warning

Initial release that allows browsing of the datapoints. Properties are not yet exposed and security issues affect some datapoints.

This Project is similar to Registry Editing via Windows Explorer Shell

I have a new computer. Anyway, the TMP files are always showing. i cannot hide them. I have gone to folders and clicked on hide hidden folders. But they still show. I am scared to delete incase it affects the real file. If this makes sense? So i have an excel file. I see the file AND its temp file. If i delete it, will it affect the excel data that is saved?
It is annoying. Any new files added or changed makes a new TMP file.
Any help?

TMP or Temporary files are backup files or cache files created by the application being used. In this case, Excel. They are safe to delete. It is a good practice to clean your system on a regular basis. I recommend Ccleaner as a cleaning tool to keep your system uncluttered.

I am trying to open a hopefully recovered file. When I looked at its properties is says "Windows Shell Common Dll" Does anyone know how I can open it? It does also have a spot to click and says "open with" But what can I open it with?

I accidently reformatted my computer. I did a recovery thing with ISO Mechanical software but now I can't seem to actually open anything. I really need to be able to open my documents and any outlook 2007 emails that I had in folders.

If anyone has any suggestions as to how to open some of these I would really appreciate it. It is for work and they are really important. Given the size it looks like something is there. Its hopefully just trying to open it.

Thanks so very much.

A:What is Windows Shell Common dll?

Shell DLLs are windows Library files , these files are specifically used by the Operating system. You cannot open these types of files pal !!! In other words you more or less damaged the files not recovered them if they just transformed to that kind of files. The only thing u can do is use software like EASEUS data recovery i am pretty sure you can recover your files if the size of 'em shows they are there. Good luck.

Hi, everybody

The latest version of Classic Shell supports Windows 8 Consumer Preview. The new features are:

A customizable start button. You can pick from Classic, Aero and Metro styles, or select your own image. Unlike Start8 and ViStart, this is a real start button. It can extend beyond the taskbar, and works well for any taskbar position, even in auto-hide mode.A new Metro skin for the start menu. For people who like Metro, but not the start screen. All settings are updated to reflect the changes to Windows 8. For example the status bar settings are gone, because the status bar in Win8?s Explorer can?t be customized. The check for new version is more responsive and can be disabled during installation.

Download it from here:

Also, in explorer, i cannot set the View style to filmstrip, only to thumbnails, list, details, icons and tiles, and also, the Common Tasks that are meant to be on the left are not visible.

Has anybody heard anything new on Instant Boot for Windows 7?

A mate of mine was telling me about it tonight as he has it on his ASRock Motherboard and it takes his PC about 4- 5 seconds to boot to the Desktop.

Is the ability to boot in such a short time a part of the BIOS or is it a small program that you install?

A:Instant Boot for Windows 7

Looks like this is an ASRock feature. And it's been around since November 2008.

My new computer arrived today with Windows7 64 installed. (happydance)
My old computer has Windows7 32 installed.

Before I start attacking both computers, thought I better ask beforehand or the b/f will 'kill' me

Can I remove the hard drive from the old computer, install it as a 2nd drive in the new computer and be able to access all the data (documents, photos, messages saved in outlook and my favourites etc) on it from the new Windows7 64bit primary drive?

(I wasn't sure which sub-forum to ask this question in, hope in here is OK.)

thanks,
Jane

A:Windows7 64 reading windows7 32 drive?

Hi Jaibird,

A hard disk is not 32-bit or 64-bit and does not depend upon the installed OS.

Yes, in some parts and no in others.
You can access files/folders from the partition Hard Disk (Documents, Photos, Favourites).. But you cannot get the messages saved in outlook.

Be advised that the (Documents, Photos, Favourites) will NOT merge into your current Windows 7 64-Bit.

Alright, so I had recently installed a custom set of system icons, and I love them. My only problem is the "settings" icon which looks like a cog.

To ensure you understand which I am talking about, heres an image:
I know how to easily change any normal programs icon, but these icons are the default icons and need a bit of extra tinkering to change them.

If anyone knows how to manually change this cog icon, or knows of a program that allows you to do so, it would be very much appreciated to hear from you.

A:Help changing windows shell icon.

Actually, the cog or gear symbol is being frequently used by other versions of Windows such as Win10, Win8.1 and applications' toolbars such as in Internet Explorer. I would think your cog is part of the customization you did and a solution would be found at the site where you got the "custom set of system icons", if indeed there is a solution/fix. Because of my work with others and their computers I have to stay away that type customization, don't want the clients to get confused.

Welcome to TSF

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(this is the drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix). DO NOT use it just yet.

Reboot your computer in SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup [but before the Windows icon appears] press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Open the SDFix folder and double click RunThis.cmd to start the script. Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts, the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt in your next reply along with a new Hijac... Read more

look up on google for windows 7 customizations. I've never heard of being able to do such a thing, but I doubt someone will know off hand where to direct you. your best bet is simply looking it up yourself

You might have posted this in the customization section where they might know a thing or two on this subject

If you'd like, you can click the exclamation mark on the upper right corner of your post and 'report' it, requesting it be moved there

C:\WINDOWS\shell.exe

I think it's a virus? My computer has been running more slowly and making more errors lately. How can I get rid of it? My current virus protection can't seem to clean it out.

thanks,
michelle

I am trying to do an inplace upgrade of Vista. What I think is a complete repair of the OS. I think it repairs corrupted files and replaces missing files. A message came up "You must uninstall Windows Power Shell". The only way I could find the program was with Start Search. It is not listed in Programs and Features and was not listed on Revo Uninstaller Pro. Can someone tell me how to uninstall a program that I can only find with a Start Search?

A:Solved: C:\WINDOWS\shell.exe error

Welcome to TSG

Open the SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

I've read of some users here in the forums using it without problem. You could set a restore point, install it and see how it works for your system.

Dear all
I am a newbie of VB. Actually I am trying to build a very simple interface for a statistical software which usually takes a long execution time to give out some results.
I my case, calculations may be started from the VB interface by using the Shell command. This command opens a DOS shell windows where calculation that take place.

Now instead of opening a new shell windows for each run I would like to have just one embedded DOS shell in my form. That is rather than openening a Dos shell windows, I would like to display the contents of the shell window in my VB form.
How can I do that?
Thanks a lot

Hey everyone! So, I recently installed bbLean ( bblean ). I really love the looks of it and I want to keep it. But in order to keep it, I really want it to be configured the way I want it.

So if there's any experienced bbLean user here who can help me out, that would be great.

OK, so the question is; How do I get rid of the Start menu icon? It keeps flashing when I minimize and maximize windows.

And how do I get access to the applications that are located in the system tray? It seems to exclude some of the applications that are started and placed in the tray.

Thanks, hope to hear from you.

P.S. I know some people may think that this post should be posted in a bblean-forum, and I understand that. But I'm pretty sure these "bugs" are Windows 7 related. And if there's a way to like inactivate the Start Icon, that would be great.

-EDIT-
OK, so I fixed the Start Menu icon. All I had to do was to exit explorer and then start bbLean. The system tray problem is still of interest.

However I have one (biggish to me) concern, I still like to use a program called (Ex7forW8exe) this gives me the Windows 7 lookalike/classic shell, Start button and Start Menu etc, so can I please ask, does anyone know what program works with Windows 8.1 ?

Thanks in advance

There is an open source project called PDFTK4ALL (PDFTK4ALL - A Graphical User Interface to PDFTK), there website says that a Windows Shell extension was created. Anybody know how I would access the shell. I installed the necessary files but when I right-click a PDF file, I do not see the additional options provided by the sheel extension. Is there something else I need to do to access the additional options?

By the way PDFTK4ALL is a gui for PDFTK which allows you to edit (split, merge,...) PDF files.

A:How to access the windows shell for PDFTK4ALL

Make sure the shell extension is enabled in PDFTK4ALL's options.

Otherwise, use the PDFTK4ALL support forum on their website.

If you are using powershell and doing a lot of scripting then yes you should update. With new updates they fix security issues, bugs, increase performance, add more stuff etc. So it wouldn't hurt to update. Windows managment framework 4.0 is out now. A recent problem has sprung up out of nowhere. Earlier today I was in skype playing with some friends and all of a sudden my skype stopped working. As I searched around I went into recording devices and the sound levels next to my mic was gone and the window immediately stopped responding and gave me the error message that is the title of this thread. I've tried looking up new drivers my my headset (Razer carcharias) but no drivers were on the site and I just finished a system file check where is repaired some corrupt files but that still had no effect. I'm literally stumped on this and have no idea how to fix this error as I have never had this happen.

Well, let me start by saying this is after the fact. To resolve the issue, I have already reloaded my OS (Win XP) given that everything I tried failed.

I was running into minor trouble with Firefox. Mainly, I had dl?d an extension that allowed me more control over my cookies. Once, I went in and deleted all the unprotected cookies. Strange thing was, every forum I went to forced me to log in again on every thread I clicked on, yet I could see every cookie with my stored info. I deleted the extension, same result. I then tried to uninstall FF, so I could reload it. I got an error saying that windoz was unable to remove the program because it couldn?t locate an uninstall text file. Next, I dl?d the final FF version (I was running the beta version). I installed it over the 1st version. Same result.

So I attempted to uninstall FF again. This time it froze during. After I end tasked it, AVG immediately popped up and said that the shell extension scanner had been disabled. I rebooted. When it came back up, save for My Comp, recycle and network icons, the rest were gone from there and my quick launch and AVG stated it failed to start. Safe Mode, no better result. When I tried to uninstall the programs from safe mode, Windoz removed the entry, but the programs were still there. System File Checker wouldn?t run at all. I tried many other fixes but all failed, so I scrapped the whole thing and reloaded.

I am sure I am missing some obvious thing, but I am at... Read more
