Monitor turn on by itself after "Turn off the display" starts

Q: Monitor turn on by itself after "Turn off the display" starts

Hi,

I've set Turn off the display setting in my power plan to 15 minutes and my monitor does turn off after that period (sometimes it doesn't!), but then, sometimes, it turns ON by itself after few minutes.

I've been Google-ing these days trying to find some solution and I came across suggestions which recommends that Allow this device to wake the computer option, located in the Power management tab, in the Properties window of the network adapter, in the Device manager, should be disabled. Also, there were suggestions that Wake on Magic packet property in the Advanced tab should be disabled, too. Unfortunately, all that did not work in my case.

Does somebody know what can cause this problem? Has anyone ever encountered such phenomena?

Thanks in advance.

A: Monitor turn on by itself after "Turn off the display" starts

Hello alokin87 & welcome to Sevenforums,

Sometimes the computer Wake from standby because of a program's updating itself. Sometimes it does wake, sometimes it does not!

Therefore it could be the Windows Media center as explained in this Hotfix from MS. You could give a try:

http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-u...ly-2010-a.html

Look at post #1:

"-Do you find that your Windows 7 Computer wakes up from sleep unexpectedly at a particular time every day? If so then you might to check up if any scheduled tasks are waking your PC up."

This is my problem: I have the power saving settings set to turn off my monitor after 20 min. It does briefly turn off, only to turn on again 1 sec. later, displaying a faint very dark blue screen... It used turn off fine, but after upgrading from Windows 98SE to XP Pro I got this problem. Is this the OS or my video card?

Any clues?

Thanks all

A:"Turn monitor off" setting doesn't really turn off

Did you upgrade to XP right over the top of 98 or was it a clean install? If you did an upgrade over the top of 98 (and I know you don't want to hear this lol) then you should format and do a clean install. Upgrades rarely leave you with a stable system.

Things to try before you do that though:

1) Make sure your video card drivers are up to date.

2) Make sure Windows is updated - go to windowsupdate

3) try the system file checker (Start, Run, "sfc /scannow" [without the quotes]) to make sure your system files are intact.

Other than that I would say just do a format and install XP from scratch (to be honest, you should do this anyway if you haven't already, you'll get much better stability and performance).

Good Afternoon,

I'd appreciate any help that I could receive for this issue. I'd like to preface this post by mentioning that I have searched these and other forums about this issue and have found people that have had similar problems, but I don't think they are explaining things properly/as clearly as they could be. I'm hoping that I could give a little more incite into what's happening.

My laptop has Windows 7 Ultimate x64. The power options are set to "High Performance" which means that the system never goes to "Sleep" whether it is plugged in or not. However, the display is set to "Turn Off" at 5 minutes on battery or 10 minutes while plugged in.

Here is the issue: After my system's display has "Turned Off" due to inactivity, I will hit a key or move my mouse to bring the display back. Sometimes (not all the time), the laptop display will remain inactive. However, I do have two external displays hooked up. When this problem occurs, I can see my cursor on the two external displays.

Now, in most posts, people say they fix the problem by restarting their computer. I've found a different fix that doesn't require a restart. I'm able to log into the system while the screen is still off (ctrl+alt+del, type in password, press enter). Once logged in, I can see my desktop on the two external screens, but not on my laptop's native display. I then hit ctrl+alt+del, and my laptop's native display returns from it's off state. I pr... A:Laptop Display Remains Off When Returning From "Turn Off" State

I've continued to see this issue. And my assumption was wrong - it doesn't rely on locking my computer. I have come back to my system after the display has turned off, shook the mouse, and the two external monitors come back, but the laptop display does not. The only thing I can think of doing at this point is to turn off the option where the monitors "turn off" after so long, even though that seems like such a waste. Maybe I'll see something funky when I do that though. If anyone has any thoughts, they would be very appreciated.

I want to automate four steps to change the time it takes to turn off the display. I do this at least twice a day. Instead of going through the four steps: personalize, screen saver, change power settings, change when the computer sleeps and then turn off display, I made a new shortcut and copied the line on top [screenshot enclosed] which made the target C:\Windows\System32\control.exe Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings. I clicked it but it didn't work. Any idea how to create the shortcut? I change this at least twice daily.

A:Creating a shortcut to "turn off display"

Hello pxfragonard,

If you like, you could create two separate power plan shortcuts (ex: High Performance and Balanced) using the tutorial below. Afterwards, change the settings in these power plans to what you want, and have the "Turn off display" set differently in each power plan. This way you could quickly change power plans by clicking on the shortcut for what power plan settings you want to use at the time.

Hope this helps,

Hi friends.

I am not on this forum unless I have a problem.
I have a year 2000 flat screen View Sonic monitor. When I boot my computer, the monitor will try to come on but quits in few seconds. It shows black screen. LED on monitor used to stay "Green" Vs yellow or nothing at present. do you think my video card might be bad in the computer or the fuse inside the monitor is blown or monitor is bad period?

Please help.

A:Flat Screen Monitor will not turn "ON"

It sounds like your system is not booting. As a quick test of your monitor, connect it to the system you are using now. That will tell you if the monitor is working or not.
FWIW I had a viewsonic 22" monitor from around the same time; it stopped working about 6 months ago.

As this question was never answered I'll post it verbatim with my own comments below,
See original post here;
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/756093-flash-drive-s-active-light.html

In all operating systems up to Vista, the flash drive's "active" light turns off when I go through the disconnect procedure; but, in Vista, it doesn't. I have traditionally used this as part of my explanation to others (and a convenience to myself) about when to not to remove the flash drive from its USB port.

This is a problem common to all Vista systems I've seen.

Why does the light not turn off in Vista?

And, is there an easy way to correct this?

Additional information: I have eliminated this problem being hardware-related. I have loaded Vista onto one of my systems here that previously had Windows 2000, then XP on it and it was only with the loading of Vista that the problem developed on this system. Just to be absolutely sure, I did a restore of a previous image of Windows 2000 and the problem went away again. I put Vista back on and the problem came back. So, this is strictly a Vista problem.Click to expand...

I have had the same problem with every Vista system I have used and every flash drive (note this means SSD NAND flash not HDD's or card adapters). A:Flash drive's "active" light doesn't turn off in Vista when "safely removed"

have done a litte research and testing in my lab on several machines and have confirmd the problem. What it seems to indicate to me is that, in Vista, the light simply indicates power, not data transfer. Whenever I am transferring data, the light blinks.

While I have never actually tested it, I do not belive that the "safely remove" feature actually kills all power to the USB port in XP. If that is the case, then there is really no danger as long as vista has acknowledged the disconnect and knows not to try to write data to the drive.

I am running Windows 8 64 bit

Apparently I scanned my system using full system scan (AVAST) and left my computer on thinking it would take for many hours. When I came back, my computer automatically shutdown because it was left standby for about 4 hours. I don't know if the scan was finished. When I try to boot, the screen gets stuck on "please wait" screen or "configuring windows. Do not turn off your computer".

I already tried going to System Recovery Options screen, then going to Troubleshoot, then Advanced Options, but I tried everything there and still the issue persists even when I tried to boot in safe mode. I tried going to command prompt, and type sfc/ scannow but it says it can't scan right now. I also tried chkdsk / R but it says the same. I don't know how to run cmd as administrator from the System Recovery Options.

So now I tried to use system restore but I am stuck to the windows logo for about 1 and half hour. I don't know if I should wait for this or it is already stuck. In other forums I read, they used system restore with only the "C:" disk group connected. Should I also do this?

I am thinking to remove AVAST or somehow disable it.

Please help me.

Hello,
I have an older Dell Laptop (studio 1558) and the other day when I was using it, the monitor picture filled with 'static' and then the monitor went completely black.  Now when I turn it on it sounds like the computer starts up fine but the monitor is black.
So get an external monitor, easily solution, right? -- wrong.  Unfortunately when I hooked my laptop up to a separate monitor, the monitor (which works fine) did not display any images.
Again I have had this laptop for a few years.  I do notice that you have to be 'easy' opening and shutting the laptop.  This has been the case for a few years though, so I am not sure if something finally gave...
I'm not the most computer savvy so sorry if I wasn't more detailed.. any ideas what's wrong or how I can fix this?  I'd rather not bring it somewhere to get fixed.

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

Yesterday my computer went crazy.
I have a Dell Latitude D531, running Win Xp Professional Version 2002 SP3.

At the end of my shift I had many windows open in Rockmelt and Google Crome and I just closed the . When I came home I opened the lid and waited for like 10 min and the only thing I saw was a "on" blask screen. I held in the power button to turn off the computer.

Turned it on and after that I lost:
1. Internet connection both cable and wireless
2. The PC won't read USB pen.
3. It won't turn off properly, and up in a blue screen and stays there.
4. Lost also sound on the computer.

I have tried the following sollutions:
- Tried to reset TCP/IP but it just hangs up.
- Tried to uninstall sound driver, just hangs up.
- Tried to uninstall network adapters, but just hangs there.

I have not installed any new programs for ages.

A:"Turn off Windows write-cache buffer flushing on the device"

I doubt anybody's done extensive testing or benchmarking for performance benefits when you enable/disable that feature. Most people probably leave it to the default (unchecked).

But heres some history. That setting exists to actually fix a bug in Win 3.1 that led to many legacy apps relying heavily on flush calls (forcing hdd to write buffered data to the disk). The reason they did this was because flush calls were extremely fast and the reason they were so fast was they didnt actually work! The feature was broken, lol. So when MS fixed the issue in Win 95, all such apps slowed down to a crawl. To fix this MS added back the option to break the flush calls.

Yesterday I had to make a trip to the hospital after suffering damage to my right eardrum as a result of horribly loud "background music" played by a profile on Hi5, and would like to ask for help from the members of this community before something like this happens again!

I have searched on-line (Google) and in the archives of this forum, as well as the Hi5 FAQ, naturally, but have found nothing at all that addresses this issue.

I would like to ask if anyone knows how to turn off the "background music" (I would call it by another name, but this is a family oriented forum, so let's leave it at that) that plays when I open some of the profiles on "Hi5." I was listening to my own music, which was playing rather softly (with the sound volume adjusted on WinAMP, not through the sound system itself), through headphones of my computer yesterday afternoon, and suddenly when I opened the profile of a friend's friend, and without any warning, music started blaring at such an incredible volume that I was literally stunned. It took a while before I was able to possess myself enough to throw my headphones (together with my glasses) off. After a hour the intense pain in my ears persisted and I ended up in the emergency room...

Now, I know about muting the system -- that is, turning off all of the sound by means of the little pop-up volume control switch. And I also know that I can adjust the sound levels by means of the Volume Control panel (i... Read more

I hibernate my desktop machine a lot, and would like to have that little feature on it (or, better yet, an icon on my decktop that I could click and the hibernation fun would begin without intervention).

Any ideas???

Oh, for those who don't know what the Vistro line is from Dell, this is a bare-bones laptop for $399 that runs XP:

Hi,
Is there a registry setting or option to turn off the message

Whats a "quite command"?

I guess I'm looking for no warning even if other users are logged on and multi RDP.

Also where are the settings to turn on or off the various windows warning messages and notices? (I'm NOT referring to the "action center" messages).

I'm doing a lot of virtual testing and multi RDP etc.

Also how do you go through 2 subnets, where one is a virtual VMWare subnet

Also, my internet has become slower... either the page takes awhile to load or it never loads at all!

On top of that, I keep getting these pop-up notices from my computer (Symantec, I think--even though I didn't even know it was working... I thought it was expired) that says, "System Alert! System has detected a number of active spyware software... etc." Normally that wouldn't alarm me, but it happens every 5 or 10 minutes! And it's never been that persistent before.

As the title suggests, every time I open "turn windows features on or off" the box stays blank no matter how long I wait. I have tried several things and have searched for quite a long time for solutions, but to no avail. The things i've tried include; everything in the following - FIX Blank or Empty List in Vista Turn Windows Features On or Off (OptionalFeatures.exe), sfc /scannow, reg delete HKLM\COMPONENTS /v StoreDirty, and making sure Windows Modules Installer is running and set to manual. I'd appreciate any help and suggestions, thanks!

I haven't heard of them changing to ".png" -- but I have heard of them being changed to .bmp when the Internet Explorer cache is full.

Hello...

I was wondering if its cool to disable the vm page file, if I upgrade to xp 64 bit edition, and install 8GB of RAM? Ive never given it much thought before now... (i figure the option to disable it, is there for a reason)

With 2GB sticks on the cheap, (around 45 bucks each), i was wondering if this config could affect performance in any way.

Currently I have 4GB of RAM (only 3.5 is addressed though), and I never seem to use more than that.

Sometimes however... when i run adobe flash 8 and photoshop.. everything really slows down quite a bit. Im just looking for super fast speeds when i run these applications.

A:Solved: Ok to turn off "page file" if i have 8GB RAM, XP 64bit edition?

I wouldn't.
Windows still uses it for some data no matter how much memory you have.
You may be able to reduce it's size though.

I recently (2 days ago) had this weird problem.

It's a sort of a "syndrome" with many problems, the most evident one is the disappearance of the "Turn off" button from the start menu; but with it some other problems as follows:

- cant open task manager, i have an error message saying:"task manager has been disabled by ur administrator" although i am an administrator.

- no "run" button in the start menu.

- some sys tray applications stopped being started up with the windows.

And i havent discovered more things,,, yet...

Also, i have recently uninstalled download accelerator plus, and downloaded internet download manager, and i am almost pretty sure this is the problem as it is happened exactly with these programs added and removed.

Please if u have any idea what is going on, enlighten me...

Hi, first post.

I can't follow the guidelines and put any information from the BSOD, because I can't boot my computer. However, I've taken a picture of the blue screen, if that's of any help.

Picture: http://i.imgur.com/faUQAZs.jpg

This is the process up till the BSOD:
1. Turn on computer
2. "Windows failed to start"
3. I can then a) "Start windows normally" or b) "Launch startup repair (recommended)"
4. a) just reboots the PC into the same state
5. b) results in a BSOD seconds after. It's stays until I turn off computer,
6. The BSOD again: http://i.imgur.com/faUQAZs.jpg

Things I've tried:
1. Booting into safe mode (and any of the other fancy options after pressing F8). This is NOT possible. I press an option, and I see a BSOD for 0,1 second, and the PC reboots.
2. Booting from recovery disk. I enter BIOS and change booting order = it detects the disc, starts to "load windows files" = but goes into BSOD seconds after.

What is definitely causing this:
My Samsung 840 SSD. I've tried replacing it with my old WD 640gb hard disk, and the computer boots just fine.
HOWEVER, it has worked fine since I installed it in September 2013. I WANT TO STRESS: It has worked fine, with out ANY issues since September 2013 up until now.

Nothing strange has happened lately; no new software, no new hardware.. nothing. It was a little overheating a few days ago, because it didn't turn off correctly and I put it in my PC shoulder bag... Read more

A:Turn on PC - "Windows failed to start" - Launch startup repair - BSOD!

The Bugcheck code of 50 suggests a memory problem, but I have seen something similar on the same Samsung 840 EVO SSD that I solved by power-cycling the SSD. To do that, follow these steps:

1. Power off laptop, unplug power lead, and remove battery.
2. Press and hold down the on/off button for 30 seconds, then release
3. Open the laptop and disconnect the SSD
4. Press and hold the on/off button for another 30 seconds, then release
5. Reconnect SSD, close-up the laptop, reinsert battery, reconnect power lead.
6. Boot as normal

Report back if it helps or not.

So, this is strictly a Vista problem.

Was just wondering if anyone has encountered a problem like this before. I have a system that hangs when I click the "Turn Off Computer" icon in the Start Menu to gain access to the "Standby" "Turn Off" and "Restart" buttons. After I click the "Turn Off Computer" button it will just sit there for several minutes with the hourglass until finally the menu will come up. I fixed this once before by removing some things from startup. This time I fixed it by killing the googletaskbar.exe. I then uninstalled the Google Taskbar and rebooted and still did not have a problem but suddenly it has returned! I have no idea what is going on, there is really nothing obscure that is starting up on boot or running. Anyone have suggestions??

Arrrgh! When I copy into certain folders I keep getting nagged that I have to get "Administrator permission to copy to this folder". I am the administrator and I know what I am doing.

Please before I go crazy with all this patronising nagging............. please tell me how to turn this off! It is a real pain in the neck...

A:Turn off warning "administrator permission to copy to "

Hello Martienne,

This is because system folders are protected. Windows does not allow anything to be copied into them directly from an external source, and doesn't allow anything to be copied into them from a local location (ex: your desktop or user folders) without you allowing it via a UAC prompt first.

The only way around this is to do this from within an elevated administrator account or to disable UAC completely. However, either one of these actions will cause you to no longer be able to open Metro Store apps until you reverse the action.

I've been using IE9 beta for a couple of months and have a minor issue concerning AutoComplete. I have it turned off via Internet Options. Every time I use IE9 to search for a website I get a pop-up at the bottom of my screen asking if I want AutoComplete to remember web form entries.

I used Option 3 to see if I needed to edit the AutoComplete registry entry but it's not even showing.

I have a habit of clearing cookies whenever I turn off my computer so I thought this pop-up was cookie related. It's not. It still shows up even if cookies have not been deleted. Is this just an annoying glitch in IE9 or do I need to configure some other setting?

A:Turn off "AutoComplete to remember web form entries" pop-up in IE

Hello Lee,

Not sure if just clicking on No in the pop-up alone would stop it from popping up again.

This tutorial is not really for that, but you might see if using step 2 in OPTION TWO may be able to stop the Auto Complete message from popping up again afterwards.

I have an Asus Q524U laptop.
Yesterday I received the Anniversary Update, and ever since then the Facial Recognition fails at login. I get the "Couldn't Turn On Camera" error message, and them I'm redirected to use my PIN for login.
Searches across the interwebz don't seem to provide much help beyond the typical "Make sure your drivers are up to date" repsonses (however I haven't sifted through them all, because the search turns up a bazillion results).
I have confirmed drivers are up to date. Even reinstalled them just to be sure. I deleted my facial recognition and PIN login settings, rebooted, then re-added my PIN login. However the setup for facial recognition fails at Couldn't Turn On Camera. The camera works with all the other software/apps. Just not for Windows Hello.
Anybody else experience this and able to fix it? Any help would be appreciated.
Thx.

The "Turn Off Computer" window pops up every few seconds (this is the window that you normally access from the "start" button - bottom left on the monitor). When this happens it only stays up for half a second and then it flashes off and all the icons on the desktop disappear for about 4-5 seconds and then they reappear. In addition to that my Norton Internet Secuity 2005 self shutdown (or don't start) at the beginning. I didn't download/launch any suspicious file but I begin to think it's a virus, and if so, how could I deal with it?

I have an Acer Aspire M5 that I got a few weeks ago. I'm new to Windows 8. For the past week or so, every time I turn it on I get a message saying my PC ran into a problem that caused it to restart, then it lists these files, the same ones every time:

C:\Windows\Minidump\070613-17390-01.dmp
C:\Users\Harrison\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-84578-0.sysdata.xml
C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP

After that, this window pops up: Attachment 24311 Note: I've never actually gotten a blue screen.

That offers no help though, since my computer has Intel and not AMD. Also, it takes the computer at least 10 minutes to shut down. Not sure if that has anything to do with this. Other than those two things, it runs the same as it has been.

last night i was working on my laptop, i realize my battery is low. so, i put it for charging..after a while i realized the battery is 75% charged so I disconnect it. and my laptop switches off.
later the laptop refused to turn on...so i reconnected the charger and the laptop turned on with the light that displays charging status (white light near the  screen-keyboard intersection) starts flickering in a cycle of 5 times...4 times orange and 1 time white...and this cycle continues till i use the laptop.
and this message is displayed when i go to BATTERY HEALTH option "Your battery is temporarily disabled. Please turn off your computer and try again when the unit is back to the operational temperature" my laptop is outta warranty...what should i do ? kindly help

A:Dell XPS 15z : "Your battery is temporarily disabled. Please turn off your computer and try again when the unit is back to the operational temperature"

hchentanshankar,
Welcome to the community.
I am sorry to read that you are having this trouble.  The battery failing is the most likely culprit but you should check to see if there are any problems with either the notebook or Ac adapter before rushing out and replacing the battery.
I would start by checking the bios, start the system tapping F2 to enter the bios, you can also tap F12 and choose bios from the menu.  Once in the bios look for the option for AC adapter warnings, if they are disabled enable them and save changes. If there is a problem with the adapter you should start getting errors about the adapter.
If the Adapter seems alright, disconnect the battery from the system and power down the notebook.  Wait an hour or so and then replace the battery and restart the system and see if you continue to get the message.   If you can run the notebook on battery only allow the battery to fully discharge and then charge it again and see if the problem returns.
I know that this may not be possible short of buying a new battery but if possible try a power adapter and battery and see if the problem continues.  This way you can find out if the problem follows the battery the ac adapter or the notebook.
Please let me know what you find out.

We have changed the PSU, monitor cable, monitor, and used the on board graphics with our graphics card removed. Doing these has not changed anything. The monitor just says "no signal"
We have also removed the CMOS battery for a minute and put it back. This also did nothing

Our Setup:
Windows XP OS, intel Celeron D, 512Mb RAM.

Please Help!

A:XP "Starts up" but shows no display

Hi,
How about the ram chips, try removing one by one and use them intersectively, see if it will change anything, if it doesnt, then have the processor out and fireup the board, then after, insert the processor and fire it up without the ram, all that should give u a warning alarm, then after proving that the board is fine, with those alarms, then u can instert one ram, at a go, but make sure u interchange them.If it fails, let us know for further help.

Just built a new rig, having this issue with my Gigabyte 7970 GHz Edition.

In my power settings I have it set to turn the monitor off after 15 minutes. The issue is that when I return to my computer, it doesn't regain the connection.
Tested with both HDMI and DVI inputs, same issue. Doesn't matter if I disconnect and reconnect the monitor, nothing. Only way to solve it is by forcing a restart.

Full system specs:

ASRock X79 Extreme6
Intel i7-3930k
Corsair Vengeance 8GB
Gigabyte 7970 GHz
Silverstone 750w PSU
Crucial M4 128GB SSD
Seagate 2TB HDD.

A:Not regaining connection after "turn screen off after..."

Try creating a new power plan - to make it easier to test, set "turn off monitor" to 2 minutes. Reboot

Hi,
I need help to restore the Turn off Computer button in the start menu. I had a single user account and did not need to log in to the computer. One fine morning I find that the Turn off Computer icon has vanished from the start menu! Moreover, I cant press ctrl+alt+del to start the task manager, it says "Task Manager has been disabled by your Administrater". My account was an administrator account with full privileges, but it got changed to a debugger account.
I created another user account with administrator rights, logged into that account and changed the properties of my original account to full administrative account, but when I logged back on to my old account, I still find that the situation is still the same.
The only way I can switch off my computer is by logging off, and then selecting the Turn Off option in the logoff screen, which is tedious and of course irritating.
Can someone please suggest some remedy for this problem?
A lot of thanks in advance.

When ever I go to Start->Shutdown->Turn off

My computer acts like its going to completely shut down, goes into the blue "Windows shutting down screen" and then procedes to restart itself..

Does anyone have any idea why this is? I've also noticed that If I unplug the machine and then plug it back in it will start automatically as son as the PC is getting power again.

I'm a little worried cause my computer is due for a major issue, that seems to hapen about once every 4 months or so.

Thanks in advance.

Hello !
In order to play an old game, I need to activate the DirectPlay feature. I tried to do it through the graphical interface "Turn Windows features on and off" but it failed (and it is the same whatever the feature I try to modify).

I tried to do it in command lines :

Code:

But I got :

Code:

Hi, I have a Seagate internal hard drive installed in an Ultra housing so I am using it as an external drive. I have that connected using USB 2.0. My operating system is Windows XP SP2. I have music and pictures on the external drive and keep it off most of the time. The problem is when ever I turn the hard drive on Windows does an "Autoplay" and scans the complete drive. This is starting to take longer and longer as I add content to the drive. When the scan is complete a window opens with this at the top " This disk or device contains more then one type of content. What do you want Windows to do?" There is no option to never scan, only the option to open programs or files or "do nothing". Is there anyway to turn off the "Autoplay" feature?

Thanks for your help!

Thx.

My Start, "Turn off Computer" and "restart computer" button doesn't work. (processor is Intel Centrino duo on an Acer Travel Mate 4230)

I think the problem began when I installed Microsoft Mobile to use with my HTC 9625 (Tytn II) [smart phone/pda]

I seem to get a temporary fix when I reinstall the Mobile app, but then in 2 or 3 days I'm back to the problem.

Also, when the shut off starts failing, (I can use the hardware button...hold 10 sec) soon to follow my "Active Sync" starts working selectively.

Help! Thoughts.

this is more of an annoyance than a real problem but I'd sure like to know how to stop it from happening.

I work for a small company, doing Technical support. We have three of four applications that I have to open every day, programs written internally by our programming department. The programs sit out on a server, but I have a local shortcut and confuguration file to run them over the Network. Every time I close and re-open these programs, I get the infernal warning message:

"The Publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?"
Underneath is the message "this file does not have a valid digital signature that verifies its publisher. You should only run software from publishers that you trust"

I have to click "run" to get it to launch, and it opens fine. It just irks me that I can't figure out how to tell Windows to quit bothering me and just open the program!

Is there not some place where I can go and tell Windows which programs to open it every time, and add it to a trusted list somehow?

A:turn off "Publisher could not be verified" message

thanks !! that seems to have worked, that means any .exe file will run without prompting.
I'm a bit surprised there's no method to selectively choose individual .exe files, like a firewall program can do.

Probably like many members of this forum I usually have multiple programs open at one time. I have a couple of chat programs open, probably a word document or two or spreadsheet, Firefox - with usually at least a dozen tabs open and likely a program to edit or render video. I am pretty satisfied with windows 7 but there is one think I want to change. When I get a new message from a chat program, or when a video is finished rendering, or there are new updates for some program, I DON"T want the computer interrupting what I am doing. It is ok if it blinks in the lower bar...but I don't want it commandeering the cursor and sending all of the words that I am typing to the program in control. I have sent some pretty strange - and embarrassing - messages that way. How can I stop it? I don't want a computer to try to think for me

A:Can I turn the automatic "interrupt" option off?

Hi pengyou,

Can you update your profile please, it states you have XP & 98 but you are asking about Windows 7? Thanks.

Could you mention some programs that cause your issue? It sounds more like an application issue than an OS layer issue. For example, some applications will flash on the bar but others will pop to the front.

Around 9:10, I told my desktop computer to shutdown. It went to a "Getting Windows ready / Don't turn off your computer"

At 9:33, it was still going with no progress update, and it suddenly turned off. When I turned it back on, there were no new updates installed.

It's done something like this at least once before. Any clue why it takes so long with no status updates. I don't recall my laptop ever doing this.
