Would Dell Factory restore work after Dell replaced the motherboard?

Q: Would Dell Factory restore work after Dell replaced the motherboard?

Would Dell Factory restore DVDS work after Dell replaced the motherboard? I haven't tried it because I have the dell re-installation disk, just wondered if I ever need to get rid of this computer. I am planning on keeping the computer as long as possible. Just for information no activation was required. I didn't have to use the OEM key on the back of the computer.

A: Would Dell Factory restore work after Dell replaced the motherboard?

With dell's the key is intergrated with the os. If they replaced with same motherboard then I do not see why it wouldn't.

Hi,

My laptop (Dell Inspiron 1564 - Windows 7 Home Premium) slowed down a few days ago and I decided to restore the system to Dell Factory Image. The process started but stopped more than halfway and gave the following message, "Failed to apply Image". I restarted the system but it would now not boot up, not even in safe mode! Perhaps, during the restore process few essential Windows files have been erased.

I want to restore the Dell Factory Image and cannot re-install Windows since I have lost the product key of my original Windows 7 installation DVD provided by Dell at the time of laptop purchase. Your help / advice is solicited and would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

P.S. System's Recovery Partition is intact and has factory.wim and other related directories / files intact.

A:Problems with Dell Factory Image Restore - Dell Inspiron 1564

The product key sticker on a Dell laptop is usually in the battery compartment.

Have you tried to run the Dell restore again? It won't boot because the restore started but failed so the "C" drive is corrupted.

If that does not work, suggest posting on the Dell forum where you can get help from those more familiar with Dell's.

My problem is that I am trying to restore a friend's Dell Studio 1555 laptop back to its factory settings, I follow the procedure mentioned on Dell's website however there is no Dell Factory Image Restore option. I have checked the laptop's Disk Management and there is a Recovery partition, in fact there are 3 partitions:

1. A 39MB OEM partition with no letter assigned.

2. C: Simple Basic NTFS with Status Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition) 451GB.

3. Recovery: Simple Basic NTFS with Status Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition) 14.65GB.

In short, when the computer starts I hit F8, I enter the Advanced Boot Options and select Repair Your Computer. I then select the language and login with the administrative account, however there is no Dell Factory Image Restore option there. My options are shown the image below:

Another issue that concerns me is that on the picture above it says Windows 7 on (D: ) Local Disk, however there is no such partition on the laptop's disk.

I would be thankful if anyone could give some advise on how to restore the laptop to its factory settings using the recovery partition. Thank you.

A:Dell Studio 1555 to factory settings,no Dell Factory Image option

On a Dell, if some other OS was installed, the Dell "PC Restore" (Recovery Partition) is no longer valid (corrupted) and the only way to reinstall is with a Windows OS installation disc and then download whatever device drivers you need from the Dell downloads.

Hello,
I am asking if a Dell xps 430 motherboard will work in my 420. The cases look identical.
The reason I am considering this is to get DDR3 Ram so as to have a faster computer.
My 420 is DDR2 and the 430 is DDR3
Anybody ever do the swap?

The XPS 630i motherboard failed (the Ethernet port and both PCI Express slots were not functioning).
I replaced the motherboard with one purchased on eBay and I used the CPU & memory sticks from the old motherboard, plus the GE Force GT640 video card and the hard drive with the previous installation of Windows7 on it, but then (due to health issues) it sat incompleted for a year. It just needed the waterblock and cooling system installed, which is just recently completed.
When attempting to start the computer, it plays a continuous beep for 25 seconds, pauses for 10 seconds, beeps again for 5 seconds, pauses again for 10 seconds, beeps again for 5 seconds, then stops.
There's no video display.
I realize I may have to reset BIOS / CMOS, yet with no video display, I'm seeking to respond to this beep's meaning, learn what that means first - and then generally how to set up this new installation from here. Thanks, Rob (archer5013)

I have a friends computer (Dell Inspiron 560 running windows 7), he had some adware and spyware and when they were removed it seems to have messed up windows, so I tried to do a restore point first and after the restore and reboot, the computer would not load up windows, so I was trying to do a full factory image reset. so the restore comes up and formats the partition and then says it is reinstalling the factory image. Once it is done and reboots it comes up with the startup repair tool and says that the system could not repair my system.

So I am stuck in an infinite repair loop with no other options.. anyone have any ideas on what to try next?

I have need to restore my new Dell 17R 5720 laptop running Win 8 back to the factory configuration. According to the documentation I downloaded from the Dell site, the way to do this is by tapping F8 during POST to access the Advanced Boot Menu and select Repair. Then go from there.

Tapping F8 has no effect whatsoever. The machine just continues booting into Windows. I've tried it numerous time for, as most know, its a short period of time when the command can be entered. I'm certain I got it entered.

This is most likely a question for Dell tech support, but I thought it prudent to see what the group on TSG might have to say about it. One factor may be this machine has the relatively new UEFI instead of the well known BIOS,

The computer also has the Dell backup and Recovery program installed, but that appears to be associated with creating and recovering to backups made by the user.

I've posted on the Dell forum. Maybe something will come from them. I strongly dislike having to contact Dell support by ohone, but it may come to that. Any help mucho appreciated.

How do I reset my laptop dell xps M1710. I want completely wipe out the memory of my computer and reset it to factory settings. Hope you can help. Thank you

A:factory restore Dell XPS M1710

Be aware that a factory reset will erase all your persoal files in the process. So if there is anyhthing you wouldn't like to lose, first copy it to external storage; typically dvd, but an external hard drive too if possible. Label and keep the copies safe. Then when the system is working again properly you can copy those files back. Very useful (wise) to regularly copy personal stuff off a computer, so as to have it all safe etc. in event of problems. Also check the copies are fully accessible/readable pn at least one other working system, as well as the one that made them - if possible. This is where to find the manual for your Dell. It will include full details on to most things, factory reset included.http://tinyurl.com/mqjafhtIncidentally, why the need to go for a factory reset? There may be other less drastic options to consider?

If needs be I will clear the lot and reinstall Windows myself, but if there is a factory restore image on there it would save time with the drivers and so on if I can run it.
The original CDs that came with the machine are missing - the system still runs so is it possible to create a recovery CD?
Any ideas anyone?

Hi,

I've recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 620 for my mum and dad and in the past when the system is running slow or encounters problems I back up everything on to an external hard drive and run a factory restore for them. However i'm struggling to establish how to run a factory restore on the new computer? I've pressed F8 when the machine boots up and selected 'Repair your computer' but the only recovery options I have are shown in the image below:

Looking at the 'Disk Management' page I can see a partition called 'RECOVERY' so i'm assuming that I can do a factory restore? One thing that is concerning me though is that Dell have provided a Windows 7 DVD and Drivers and Utilities DVD so i'm worried that i'm expected to reformat the hard drive and install from scratch?

Thanks in advance,

Snook

A:How To Factory Restore A Dell Inspiron 620?

TheSnook,
It's very good news that you have those disks. I believe you are headed towards a clean install of the OS, drivers and all software which will include a complete format of the OS target drive. Time consuming yes but it can give you that better then new performance when things get gummed up with trojans, viruses and such.

Well, DELL M101z (Inspiron 1120) manual says Press F8 when the DELL logo appears, to bring the Advanced Boot Options.

When I do that ( I have tried a hundred times) it does not happen and the lappie merrily goes on to the first screen to select Ubuntu light or Windows 7 - by default boots into Windows 7 after 5 seconds. (This lappie is one of the few that comes with Ubuntu light preinstalled by the manufacturers. So I have not done anything with the MBR)

Here is the screenshot showing the OEM (FAT16), Recovery,System,Linux partitions.

How do I invoke Factory Image Restore?

(When I press F8 just as Windows starts after 5 seconds, I do get the Advanced Boot Options that only brings the usual Sytem Image Restore and not the Factory Image Restore)

A:Trying to restore Dell to factory settings, but F8 not working

Hi dave0549jv,

If your system boots to 'Windows', you may still create the 'recovery media' yourself. Please have a look at this video for details: Video Support Center
You may also want to refer to the following 'web article': http://dell.to/RgKnOi
You may further use this 'media' to 'restore' the system to 'factory defaults'. (Note: Backup all personal data; 'factory restore' leads to data loss)

Would also suggest you to 'release static power' and attempt to access the 'Advanced recovery options' again (Tap F8 key repeatedly). To release 'static power', unplug all peripherals, power cables and battery (if laptop); push and hold down the 'power button' for 10 seconds continuously.

If you are unable to enter 'Windows', please share the 'make/model' of the computer. Would also like to know more about the 'issues' that you are facing.

Do reply with the findings; would be glad to assist.

Hi,
So I my XPS came with Windows 7 pre-installed as per usual, however, my sister had recently purchased Windows 8 pro and gave it to me. I upgraded, willing to try it out, however, I was not told that she had already used the product key to activate it so I am stuck with an inactive Windows 8. I am trying to do a factory image restore but none of the options I have looked up are options available to me.
Like I said I am currently running windows 8 but want to run a Dell Factory Image Restore so it reverts back to its original Windows 7 OS. I have followed the instructions in my XPS setup guide, ran it and nothing finding out later that since its windows 8 it does not apply. I have tried the windows 8 reset but it does not work. I have run the same process for windows 8, but my laptop does not have the backup and recovery option, it still runs the dell datasafe local backup, which also does not allow me to run a factory image restore for some reason. Can someone help me PLEASE!!! This is frustrating beyond belief. Just want to go back to windows 7 but the factory image restore is not showing up as an option. How do I get there? and How do I revert back to Windows 7?
Thanks

If you don't have a Dell Windows 7 Reinstallation DVD use a Digital River .iso and the Activation Backup and Recovery Program:

lately my dell has been giving my allot of problems, very slow, and most of all crashing randomly, sometimes an hour after using it but most of the time seconds after logging in or as soon as I log in. I wanted to restore it to format my hard drive but I couldn't because my OS was on my :C drive. I tried to do Dell Image Factory restore but as I searched around I feel like im the only one with this problem. I hit F8 b4 the Windows logo shows up, I get to the Advanced Boot options and select repair your computer as I was instructed. However thats where things go awry, instead of where I was instructed to select languages.etc it just boots up to the login screen after awhile and instead gives me a login screen for "Other User" and since im the only account on my computer there was no way for me to login. My computer uses Windows Vista Ultimate, and came pre-installed with Vista, so I don't have a repair disk of any sort. I tried running in safe-mode to select system restore, but it didn't show any signs of starting it up when I selected it and ended up crashing my computer. I don't know much about recovery (I backup'ed what I needed to on a USB drive) but the :D Recovery drive is intact and i've never touched it what so ever. I've heard things about partions and volumes and it just made me confused. any help would be appreciated.

After I did this I researched and found our I should have probably taken more steps than I did. Anyway I want to restore my Dell Deminsion E510 to factory and start all over. My question is what do I need to do as far as my wireless router and modem goes? will I lose settings? What else will I lose? I know I need to backup but will the problem backup with it? Or since I still have xp will upgrading to windows 8 fix the whole problem or mess me up more

A:restore Dell E510 to factory questions

I know I need to backup but will the problem backup with it?Click to expand...

I assume that you are talking about backing up your data. I don't know what your problem was/is, but very seldom is the problem caused by your data.

My question is what do I need to do as far as my wireless router and modem goes? will I lose settings?Click to expand...

The only device that will be impacted is the PC that you are restoring to factory defaults. That PC will then have the same settings it had when it was new.

What else will I lose?Click to expand...

You'll "lose" any programs, data, settings, updates, etc., that were added or changed since the PC was new.

Or since I still have xp will upgrading to windows 8 fix the whole problem or mess me up moreClick to expand...

If you have checked and confirmed that your PC is compatible with Windows 8.1, upgrading to that is probably a good idea. But to "upgrade" to 8.1 (or to 8) you have to do a "clean" (probably called "custom") install, so you will still "lose" the same things as if you install or re-image to XP.

I replaced bad hard drive on a Dell Inspiron laptop, was able to create boot disks so did a complete factory install, after first boot is where I get the boot error, and only way to fix to get back to windows is with a MS win7 boot disk and let it do any automatic boot repair.

Now I can get to windows but have lost the factory "F8" repair my computer prompt, tried the AutoSetupfailover.cmd found in this thread Restoring Vista to a Windows 7 laptop after changing the recovery partition to give it a drive letter D:, got the factory restore "F8" back, but when I try it, it just boots into windows.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 with Windows XP Media Center Edition. This computer was having problems running in the normal mode and would only run in Safe Mode. It had the PAV virus on it. Could not get that uninstalled because none of my removal tools could pull it off and the uninstall file was missing so I couldn't uninstall it. I have been advised to Restore the computer back to factory. I have no discs. I have a product key for Windows XP Media Center Edition on the underneath of my laptop. Thats it. I have done some searching and found that I could restore my computer by pressing ctrl & F11 at the same time. I did that and I was given two options. One Restore and the other Boot. Well I have tried both. The Restore fails. So now I am looking for some guidance on my options now. Please anyone with experience or help respond to me. I will try whatever will work. Thanks for your time.

My friend has a dell inspiron B130 laptop and wants me to restore it to factory status via the dell recovery image. I know how to restore it to factory status but he wants to keep some personal files and I was just curious if, instead of just burning his files to cd or transfering to another pc via network, if I could just put all his files he wants to keep in one folder and just put it in the same folder as the one which dell keeps to store the hd image and drivers since that folder(s) don't get deleted during recovery. Just thought maybe someone has tried this and know if it would work or not. I'm just worried that if I copy his personal folder into the dell recovery image folder it might give me errors. if anyone has experience or suggestions on this I'd appreciate it. And if I didn't explain what I want to do clearly just let me know and I'll try to explain it better.

thanks,

Due to an oversight, I've had to download the Windows 10 (plus Dell extras) Image ISO at http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/SLN297920.
However, I can't burn it to a DVD as it's 6.49Gb in size. The file is called RN4DFA00_W10x64ROW_core(DL)_v2.iso.
However, it doesn't seem to be recognised as an ISO file. I can't burn it to a blank 25Gb Blu-ray disk either although I have a BR burner.
Not possible to use a USB stick as I don't have a spare one, let alone it being big enough in any case until I get some 32Gb sticks by the end of next week.
I tried the free burning software without success and some of them have viruses. Can I do anything now to fix things by resetting to the factory settings? Thanks in anticipation.

A:Factory Restore Image for Dell XPS 9550 15"

Hello!  I would say that either the file is corrupt (which stinks for being so big), or whoever at Dell didn't format the file correctly.  You can try and download it again, or you can give Dell a call and ask them for a USB image drive which they will send you as long as you are under warranty.
You can also request it via the form on this page, First section, subsection 3.

Hi,

I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right thread, but a major part of my query is with backing up the data on my hard drive. Please help.

I want to reinstall Windows 7 Home Basic (x64) on my Dell Inspiron 1440 laptop. But I do not have the setup CD and hence I plan to use the Dell Restore Image on the recovery partition. Before this I need to backup the data.

So these are my queries in short:

1) During Dell Factory restore, do I get to create partitions? Coz right now win 7 is in a 441 GB partition, but I want to install the OS in a smaller partition, say 40GB.

2) Before the reinstall, I need to back up the data. Unfortunately, the back up hard disk (on my desktop comp) will fall short by around 50GB. So I came up with this idea:

Cut and paste as much data as possible from my laptop to the desktop. Use Windows disk management feature, shrink the volume, and create a partition from within Windows 7. Move the 50 GB data to this partition.
During the reinstallation, create yet another partition, of 40GB, and install Windows without having to delete the 50GB data. Is this possible?

Please find attached a screenshot of the Disk Management utility. The 12.11 GB partition has LinuxMint and I plan to install XP over it.

Hope I am clear. Thanks in advance.

A:Shrink volume and Dell restore to factory settings

The whole idea of Factory Restore is to put everything back to the way it was when it was shipped from the factory.
So no if you use the factory restore option you will not be able to shrink the C drive.

Not sure what Dell does these days. I've only worked on one Dell notebook with 7 on it.
But Dell does included a program to make the system disk from images/ISOs/whatever on the hard drive.
Not sure if those disk you create contain a REAL OS reinstall disk or if it is to do a factory reinstall.
The only way to tell is create them and take a look at what is on each disk.
You might be able to contact Dell and for a small fee have them send you a REAL OS disk.

My parents/younger brother had messed up the family computer with viruses and stuff and even after running multiple virus scans and spyware removers it still had pop-ups and random crashes.
So I decided just to do a factory restore to return it to its original factory settings. After doing so I deleted some of the useless programs that are initially installed with the computer and turned it off.

The next day I tried to turn it on, and the power sign would flash and lights would turn on, then it would shut off, and automatically begin the process over every 5-10 seconds. During this time the monitor shows the "no signal" sign.

Any ideas what could of gone wrong and how to fix this problem?

A:Dell Dimension E510 won't turn on after a factory restore

Do one more restore. Do not delete those programs this time. You are likely causing errors in your registry.
Once you are done with the Install, go to the www.Dell.com site, and have Dell update all the device drivers.
Then connect with www.microsoft.com and download all the Windows Updates. There will be about 109 of them.
At the end of these two updates, you should be back to normal operations.

I recently came into possession of a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop which refuses to boot the installed operating system, Windows Vista. When the laptop is powered up, it displays the Dell logo as well as a loading bar and options to open the BIOS settings and the boot options. After a few moments, it changes to a black screen with a single flashing underscore in the top corner. This then disappears and is replaced with a screen that states 'Windows Error Recovery'.

"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. If Windows files have been damaged or configured incorrectly, Startup Repair can help diagnose and fix the problem. If power was interrupted during startup, Choose Start Windows Normally."

It then goes on to list Launch Startup Repair (recommended) and Start Windows Normally. However, when the Startup Repair option is chosen the screen goes dark for a short moment and occasionally a loading bar appears across the bottom. Quickly this vanishes and the Windows Error Recovery screen turns up again. No matter how many times this is selected, the same thing happens. When Start Windows Normally is chosen, on the other hand, the entire boot process is restarted from the beginning, as though nothing had happened, and the laptop once again sticks on the Windows Error Recovery screen.

As of writing this post, I am unaware what the actual problem is. I have run a series of diagnostic tests on the system through the boot optio... Read more

Hello there,
new to the community and in need of some assistance. Perhaps there is another thread better suited for the problem but I was a tad overwhelmed by the range of sections of this site.

After accidently downloading a virus, "STDRT.EXE", that regenerated in my Windows>Temp folder after each reboot i used Combofix and TFC by oldtimer aswell as file shredding the virus in my system 32 folder under the name of "adbcns.1.exe". I then attempted to restore my Dell Inspiron -either 518 or 519- to its factory image settings by pressing F8 when the Dell logo appears at start up and selecting "Repair Your Computer" next i am given the option to start my computer normally, or in safe mode. I chose normal, the computer starts to morph to into the next screen but instead shuts down. Does anybody know how i can fix this to factory restore my settings? Mainly for good measure to bid the virus farewell, but also my PC is riddled with useless files and i would really rater a fresh start.

Any help is much appriciated, for more information just ask and ill try to provide it Thanks.

Hi buggs1a,

Welcome to Seven forums.

I apologize for all the inconvenience this issue has caused and promise you that I will do my best to resolve this issue to your satisfaction.

Dell Datasafe software should not have caused this issue. If you have made a backup on a external drive or CD and if it is still in the system make sure that you remove them and restart the system.

There is a different way to do a factory restore for the system based on Windows 7. Please check the link below which explains the same:

Hello everybody

I've done something really stupid. After problems with my laptop yesterday (windows Vista Home Premium) when it would no longer boot I accidentally disrupted the dell restore process (from F8 on boot up) and lost some files. Being the extremely impatient person that I am I decided to load XP pro from my desktop installation disk so that I could access the recovery partition.
At the moment my laptop thinks its a desktop (on XP pro) the recovery partition is intact, I can see the recovery partition but cannot get to it to restore it as now if I reboot F8 no longer gives me the restore option. I have created a vista recovery disk and when I try the restore option from there it says it can't find any image to restore. I can get to command prompt with the recovery dvd does anybody know if it's possible to restore from the command prompt ?????

OK my friend has a Dell Inspiron 1545. His computer won't boot up completely. he wants me to restore it only he doesn't have the disk and when i hit F8 i got to (Advanced Boot Options) Screen then I hit the (Repair Your Computer) option. this is supposed to take you to the Restore Dell To Factory Options. Only it takes you to (Windows Error Recovery) Screen instead and the only to options are (Launch Startup Repair (recommended)) and (Start Windows Normally). L.S.R does nothing but go to a Black Screen for 15 second and then right back to the W.E.R Screen. S.W.N tries to boot up the Computer which it can't so it goes to a black screen. I left it like that to see if it would do anything else and it sat there for an hour. Trying Ctrl+F11 only takes me to this same Screen W.E.R. So why is there no option to Restore Factory Settings what am i doing Wrong.

Need to find a Solution that doesn't include getting a Recovery disk he doesn't have one And even if i wanted to get one for him i wouldn't have any ideal what i'd be looking for.

A:Lost Programs after Factory Reset/Restore Dell Inspiron/Windows 7

I would not think so as Windows backup on 7 does not back up programs - only the system image does that.

Windows 7 backup
Windows Backup won't back up the following items:
Program files (files that define themselves as part of a program in the registry when the program is installed).
Files stored on hard disks that are formatted using the FAT file system.
Files that are in the Recycle Bin.
Temporary files on drives smaller than 1 GB

Adobe of course if it was the free version is not a problem as you can simply download it
Paperport if it was this
http://shop.nuance.co.uk/store/nuan...Currency.GBP?gclid=CMb2p8DWjsICFesBwwodG7AALg
is problem and the only possible solution I see if you still have any details of the purchase is to contact Nuance and see what they may offer you

Hey there,
So i've sold my old desktop PC so therefore am in the process of restoring it to factory settings, however it's proving not to be as easy as i thought it would be.

I've tried holding CTRL and pushing F11 when the DELL logo flashes up but nothing comes up, also after reading the manual i've tried pushing F12 (on the same screen) and choosing to boot from CD, but that does nothing, which rather odd as this is what the manual suggests aswell...

The desktop is running Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3.

Dell N5030: W7 wont start. Dell logo > black screen. How to restore?

Hello friends

Please could you advise me. My friend has asked me to help with her Dell N5030 Inspiron laptop. She has had it for about just over a year now. Dual-core Pentium, 4GB RAM, W7 64bit. She is not computer savvy and I dont know how shes managed to do this but heres the problem:

1. You press the power button
2. The Dell logo appears along with the F2 & F12 options for Setup & Boot Options
3. This is followed by a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left. Thats it.

All this happens in the space of 6 seconds (power-up to black screen). Nothing else happens, no Windows logo screen, no Microsoft logo, nothing. Screen stays black with the cursor and the laptop instantly turns off when I press the power button.

My friend was desperate because she had over 740 family photos and some important documents she didnt want to lose. I was able to recover all of those using a Linux Mint live CD so at least shes all smiles for that

Using Mint made me realize that the hardware was working perfectly. The hard drive was good, no mem faults and of course the optical drive was fine. So its something with Windows 7.

Also while using Mint I could clearly see the Dell Recovery Partition. The problem is I dont know how to get the Inspiron to fire it up - because I cannot even get into Safe Mode where the "Repair your computer" option is.

When I pressed F12 al... Read more

Hi all! I'm looking for just about any answers I can get here, because I'm not at a loss.

One of my coworkers accidentally deleted a network driver from one of the computers in our store, and it was no longer able to connect to the master computer or the internet. I created and administration password so I could get into admin settings to try to work with it that way, and no such luck. So I tried doing a system restore - even up to a month ago. None of the restores I tried to do worked at all, so I decided to do a restore to factory settings and reinstall windows if I had to. That went fine, but when I started the computer back up it was asking for the password I had set.

Enter, arrows, and the F1-12 keys were working fine, but the rest of the keyboard seems to not be responding anymore. So even though I can hit enter after entering the password, I can't actually type it in.

Is there any way I can get around this at all? I tried going into setup to disable the password, but it even asked for the password to enter setup.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Talk to Dell on the Phone... not India, but the country in which you work... You may have to send it back to Dell in Texas... Do not do it online... you need to talk to somebody... and count on it taking hours.
There is no way around the problem, except through Dell.
We cannot help you on TechSpot, as a decision has been made to avoid dealing with password issues.
When you call Dell, they will want to know the history... when purchased... Original owner on the warranty... other details and will require that you be very specific.
I would deal with it as a repair/warranty issue... but your appeal may differ.

basicall, my WHOLE problem is mentioned in my title of the board.

it's actually my mom's problem.

i re-installed windows from scratch to see if that fixed it.

but the modem works FINE in XPHome, but then seems to disable itself in XP Pro.

Dell tech support cna't figure this out.

i don't know what to do with my mom's new PC

she's been running it fine on XP home

but when she upgrades to Pro, all hell breaks loose.

We use a broadband ISP (direcway....ewww i hate it, but it gets the job done when you live in hicksville usa....lol)

but you need to activate it (and activate windows) via a modem..and we use dialup as a backup ISP.

my mom can run fine in Home, but she want's Pro to work.

I want to change the motherboard and possibly the processor of my Dell Dimension 4700 with its P4 3Ghz Processor.

I am not sure if I can stretch to a new processor (though if I could I would want an Athlon 64 X2) but I would like to know what motherboards would be compatible with the P4 I currently have... I would preferbly like something with SLI so I can have that as an option in the future.

Please let me know! Thanks!

A:Dell's Record Now will Not Work Nor Will System Restore

Is system restore turned off on the system? And have you tried removing all sonic software from the pc then reinstalling it? I personally use nero so i cant help much there but a good place to check would be to see if the service is turned on in windows. Also what does the error exactly say when you create a restore point?

I bought my Dell Vostro 3800 ST almost 2 years ago, sadly I didn't really do my research before I bought it, and it turns out, card that came with it wasn't really great for gaming and it's nearing the end of it's life.
So I'm planning to buy proper card, but my tower is waaay to slim to fit in it comfortably.
So my question is, will I be able to take my motherboard to another, non-Dell case? If so, what type of case would be good? I did try to find online, what type of motherboard it is, but if there's an answer to that question, I can't find or understand it.
I'd be grateful for any help provided :)

A:Will my motherboard from Dell Vostro 3800 ST fit into non-Dell case?

It's more or less a micro-ATX board so it will likely fit a standard case.  That said, wiring the power switch, hard drive LEDs, etc. will be difficult - they're not standard and it may be a lot of trial and error to make work.

My Dell Inspiron has a virus that prevents it from starting. I need to reinstall the OS, but when I click the option "repair your computer" in the BIOS it does nothing. It just remains at the same screen. It's been like that since I bought it, but now I actually need it... Obviously it didn't come with an OS disk because it's supposed to be available at the recovery partition but it dosen't work >.<

What should I do? I'm not feeling spending 200$ on an OS disk.

A:Vista restore partition on Dell PC dosen't work >.<

Hi -

Contact Dell Support and purchase replacement Dell OEM Vista recovery discs. The cost is usually about $25 -

Wipe the HDD completely with KillDisk, then reinstall Vista with new Dell recovery DVD.

TL;DR: I would like to try to replace the Dell XPS 720 mobo with one from another mobo-maker. Hence, does anyone know of any OTHER such manufacturer's mobo that would meet the specifications of, and be equivalent to, the design configuration and physical layout of the Dell XPS 720 mobo?

Specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6850 (4MB L2 Cache,3.0GHz,1333 FSB)
4 GB Corsair Dominator DDR2 SDRAM 800MHz OC'd to 1066MHz (4 DIMMs)
512MB Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT
BTX Motherboard, Vista 32-bit premium

I'm garbage at telling if these parts are compatible with certain mobos. I'd like to switch to the ATX form factor.

Also, I'm thinking about throwing another GPU in there in SLI configuration. Here's what my card looks like:

For SLI purposes, would it matter what manufacturer I buy the 8800gt from if it is the same architecture as the one pictured above?... which I believe is made by EVGA, but I'm not really sure.
THANKS SO MUCH!

I have a nasty nasty infection on my pc. I've tried several things to remove it myself and I can see that the forum for HJT logs and malware removal is swamped here...

So, I'm considering a reformat. My Dell Dimension came with a utility called the DSR--Dell System Restore. It's a hidden partition users can go to to easily set the OS (Windows XP in my case) to it's original "from the factory" state.

I haven't been saving a lot of my files to disc the way I should have been. And now this infection has disable most of my operating system's peripherals--I can't burn cd/dvd, can't print, I don't even have audio right now. I'm in Safe Mode With Networking because it's the only way I can get onto the net.

I've read a few good turtorials about using the DSR but, none of them mention whether I can just re-install my snapshot to my main drive (C and leave some files I backed up to D: or, if all my disc will be wiped clean--including the files I moved to D: ?

Does anyone know anything about this? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

My Dell Inspiron Laptop which runs on Windows Vista will not start properly, the screen will go black after loading, this is before i can get to the log on stage. There is only a cursor which i can move.

I then started Startup Repair and it performed the checks, but my computer still wouldn't start. I then tried System Restore which didn't have a backup. I clicked the link to create a backup, but it said 'Your computer is running in a limited diagnostic state'. I have tried running the Windows Vista disk and it doesn't change anything. I have tried every method I know of, but I cannot get my computer working. Is there any other way, if you know please help me.

Would any of you please tell me where to find the proper 64-bit drivers to use on a Dell Inspiron 531S?

The official Dell website does not share drivers for that edition of XP. My computer came with Ubuntu pre-installed. Please help me get the right drivers XP Pro (64-bit).

The only reason why I'm searching for 64-bit drivers for XP is because I have no interest in using Windows Vista or any 32-bit operating systems from Microsoft. Like I mentioned before, the Dell website is not offering the proper drivers I need for this computer and the Windows XP (64-bit).

I've read articles about getting 64-bit drivers to work on that computer, but I haven't found any website that offers the same drivers. I'm basically on my own, according to this Dell expert (see below). That person told me about the drivers without sharing 1 single link to download the 64-bit drivers (or chipset) for XP, which he/she mentioned:
Dell does not support 64 bit in that model and the reason there are no drivers. You are basically "on your own" to try and find suitable drivers.

However, if you installed the Chipset drivers, Windows should either install a generic driver or find suitable drivers.

The correct install sequence is (1) Install Windows (2) Install chipset driver (3) Install Device Drivers.

On Intel systems the chipset drivers define what is on or attached to the motherboard. I assume the AMD drivers do the same thing.Click to expand...

A:Dell site won't help me. How do you get XP Pro (64bit) to work on Dell 531S?

Hi there

The very best database for drivers is DriverGuide.com . You need to create a free account to gain access.

What the tech suggested was installing enough drivers to get your networking to work and then letting Windows find all the missing drivers automatically using the now working internet by selecting the option "search for drivers automatically" when installing the devices through the add/remove hardware applet in the Control Panel.

After doing a clean install of my computer about a week ago (Windows XP Home Edition) my Dell speakers won't work at all, in WMP and on websites, such as YouTube. I installed the driver from Dell Support but they still don't work. Everything is plugged in properly and the green light on the right speaker goes on, but no sound at all comes out. NOTHING. I looked around in Audio settings and everything seems to be in place. The speakers aren't muted or anything. Could someone please help me solve this problem? Thanks!

Check your connections again. We've all plugged in the PC connection to the wrong port from time to time.
If that's not the problem, uninstall the driver in Device Manager and reinstall.

Hi all,

I had my motherboard replaced recently and have just done a system restore to a date prior to the motherboard change.
Windows now needs to be reactivated but the ethernet port is not showing any connectivity so I can't connect to the internet to do it.
I can't get past the Windows login screen to reverse the system restore.
Any ideas?

Help would be appreciated.

I recently bought a cd writer and have found out it was originally meant for a dell computer - mine isn't a dell though.

The writer manual is here - http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/storage/p60335/en/index.htm

The machine is just some clone I picked up at a garage sale, it works really well except that the cd writer quit recently. It has an MS- 6738 motherboard and duron processor running Ubuntu 10.04 currently.

Will the dell cd writer work in it? So far I'm having no luck but I'm new at this so I wasn't sure if it was my error or simply not going to happen

I think I made a mistake.
I replaced the motherboard on a HP Pavillion desktop. The motherboard is made by ASUS. I updated the BIOS (downloaded from HP); then I got the "purple code" ; so I proceeded to reinstall the original os that came with this computer; the message was some thing like "Can not install windows with these discs...etc."
The ASUS website is not helpful at all. I called the ASUS people, explain the problem and the only answer I got was "you should call hp or take it to a hp repair center.."
I would greatly appreciate any advise or suggestions on this frustrating issue. Thanks, Luis

What do I need to do to get it to recognize the restoration cd. I have been the sole owner of this laptop so I know that it is the right cd. Thank you in advance.

A:Solved: Replaced motherboard now restoration cd does not work

You probably got a motherboard of a newer or older revision than your old one. Probably nothing else to do than to return the replacement, if they said it will work on your particular laptop, atfer having a look at it, then they should be forced to replace it for free, otherwise it's basically an error on your side.

Yes, the Dell Inspiron 3847 Mini Tower can use generic ATX power supply units, with either a 24-pin or 20+4-pin main motherboard power connector, with or without the on/off switch. You should be able to buy a compatible power supply from either a local or online computer store.Note: You require a power supply with four SATA power connectors.
