Inspiron 8600 running xp black screen but torch shone on screen & can vaguely see

Q: Inspiron 8600 running xp black screen but torch shone on screen & can vaguely see

Start up then screen goes black before I even get chance to log in. If I shine a torch on the screen I can see it is working but impossible to do anything.

I think it needs some new part(s) installed to fix this (I think).
I know it's an old no longer supported system but I use it to run the TV guide, play some language cd's I have installed & Google some info.

I think 1 item is n inverter ?

Thanks 4 any help

A: Inspiron 8600 running xp black screen but torch shone on screen & can vaguely see

It could be the inverter - particuarly if the failure was sudden. It could also be the backlight bulb itself, meaning a replacement screen is needed.

Within the last day my screen will go completely black... not like when it is turned off, but a completely deep black. No cursor, nothing. Is this a virus I have??? It's a DELL Inspiron 8600 with Win XP Pro. It did it the first time while on Facebook. So I shut it off and tried again. Second time it did it on Facebook again, third time, on desktop screen, fourth was at start-up. I booted in f 2 and went to diagnostics and it went black as soon as page popped up withCPU or whatever and then proceeded to do a series of 3 beeps at different intervals. After listening to that horrid sound for about 3 minutes, I shut if off !!! lol Turned on and again did f 2 and started in first option (can't recall exact name) of internal HD ??? and this is how I ended up here . Still on and going, but for how long? No clue. Am wondering if this is a virus I have or is my laptop really about to bite the dust? Currently running a full scan on Malwarebytes. Thanks for any help offered !!!!

Do you have a CD in the drive by chance? USB stick plugged in?
Has the machine been dropped or hit or fluids spilled on it?
Any power surges lately while machine was connected to power?
Try reseating your RAM. It should be fairly easy to do. Google it if you have difficulties.

A:How do I rectify black screen startup on an Inspiron 5537 15R running Windows 10 Home

Hi rackbrane,
Thanks for posting!
It sounds like your back light on your LCD screen is going bad or possibly the connection to the cable is loose! Try hooking up another monitor to it and see if you get video on that OK. If nothing appears on the other monitor try holding FN key and hit F1 to toggle thru ouputs until it shows.  If it is the screen, then a replacement can be easily procured from Dell Spare parts or from Parts-people.com, or Discount Electronics.
Post back if you need additional assistance.  Thanks.

I am having some problems with my inspiron laptop, and was wondering if anyone had any ideas of what it could be and how to fix it?

When I start up my laptop, it displays only a part of the screen. It is as if you split the screen horizontal 3.5 times, but only displayed the middle section 4 times on the screen.

This happens from the very begining of boot, and it boots up just fine. So it appears to be a hardward issue.

I have an Inspiron 8600, with a 15.4 inch screen, and an ATI 128 Mb video card. I take it from my house to my girlfriends house, but I haven't dropped it, or done anything strange to it.

Anythoughts??

I got new hinges for my laptop not too long ago. These hinges were apparently too strong. So strong, that it broke the METAL part of the screen assembly off, making the screen assembly almost unusable. I am getting a new 8600 to fix this plus a list of other dilemmas I have with this current one. If I were to reuse these hinges, how do I make them more loose?

Hello!
A couple of days ago my Inspiron 8600 laptop screen decided to quit working.  Prior to that, it worked fine.  It hasn't been dropped, etc.
My laptop works perfectly with an external monitor, but the laptop screen shows zero signs of life, at any time (during the boot-up, or after Windows is launched.)
1) I've done the diagnostic that I found on the Dell website.  Everything checks out on the external monitor, but again, nothing is happening on the laptop screen.
2) I've toggled back and forth between the laptop screen and the external monitor using the "Function" + "F8" keys.  All that happens is that momentarily I can turn off the external monitor, but nothing seems to affect the laptop screen.
3) the only thing that is worth mentioning is that I have been using a docking station for a while, and sometimes upon re-booting the computer in the morning, I get a message saying that "the computer was improperly turned off" (or something like that), and that I need to be careful about heat damage.  I then need to press the "F1" key to complete the re-boot process.  This may or may not have anything to do with the laptop screen not working.

What do you guys/gals think?  What can I do about this?  The computer is no longer within warranty.

thanks much -

Richard

Hi,

I've been working on a dell inspiron 1525 today and cant figure what is causing this problem.

The laptop boots, displays the post screen, and then the screen goes black.
You can boot into BIOS,
You can boot into the Boot menu.

You cannot boot into safe mode, the f8 key does nothing,
when using the boot menu, u can't boot into a windows disc to reload the operating system, it just goes black.
I did however manage to boot into a linux cd i have and run a HDD test (what passed) and a memory test (what also passed).

It does exactly the same on an external monitor aswell so I am lost with this one.

Any ideas would be appreciated

Hi,

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 and today I suddenly got a blue screen error message, the main message said "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA". After rebooting, I got the same message. Then on the next reboot I couldn't get to the login screen.

I used my Dell OS Recovery CD that I created to try and repair Windows XP. It asked for a place to partition/fragment Windows, and then it went through copying files etc.

After that, I tried to restart, I got the normal Dell Boot screen but then it went to a black screen, with only a flashing cursor in the top left hand corner.

I cannot do the Ctrl Alt F11 option to recover Windows XP, I can only either choose F2 or F12 at the initial boot screen.

Please help, I really do not know what to do!

What is the blue screen error message all about? I haven't installed any software or hardware so I do not see what might of caused the problem!

Hey!

My Dell Inspiron 1100 is over 6 years old at this point, quite the dinosaur. However, I still have a bit of old data I would love to remove before it really bites the dust.

When I boot up the machine, usually the display is clear and bright. However, after no more than a minute the screen goes black and only a faint outline of the desktop remains. What is the problem and what do I need to do to solve it?

Thanks!

Hi

backlights or invertor board is failing (failed).

If there is an external monitor socket on it use a monitor to see the screen and then you can backup your data.

The problem started around a week or two ago. When I run full screen games, the screen becomes black and the system does not respond to anything. Programs in the background still run as audio can still be heard. I suspect it may be BSOD but am unsure. The problem does not occur right away, it happens when the program has been on for around 10 minutes.

Some additional info: When I received the computer from the seller, I accidentally uninstalled some drivers and had to reinstall them. I tried to find the drivers on the NVIDIA site but the ones marked for my GPU did not work. I found another driver that worked, but I am not sure if that caused other issues.

- Windows 7
- 64 bit
- Original Vista installation
- Full retail OS version
- Hardware around 2 years old
- Windows 7 installed July 13, 09

Ok, so I don't know if it is the motherboard or if it is actually the lcd monitor.
I will be using the laptop and then all of a sudden the screen goes black, like the computer was turned off. I pop up the power button panel and pill the monitor cable from the motherboard, wait a few seconds and plug it back in and it will work for a few more seconds and then go black again.
I believe that it is the monitor, but I am not sure. I have been noticing that whenever I turn my laptop on from the sleep mode, that the screen is a pink color and then slowly goes to the normal white color. I am not having any other problems with the computer, except the microphone jack. When trying to use a microphone, when it does detect sound, it just plays back a high pitch static sound.
But besides the monitor and the microphone jack, I am not having any other problems.

If I have to replace my motherboard will I loose all of my info on the computer? Because I will have to try and get it all backed up if so. Please help me!!! Thank you so much!!!

i ran an automatic Dell update on our 8 month old Inspirion 24. Screen went black and I thought it was just rebooting, but it was actually shut down. When I turned it back on, all I got was never ending flashing red, green, blue, white. No end, no escape. 2 futile hours on the phone with Dell will cost our business 2 weeks of down time while computer is sent back to Dell for warranty. Biggest frustration is that this seems to be a 'known' issue for at least 5 years and Dell seems to be infinitely disinterested in the problem their update has caused. 3rd business day since, and Dell is just now getting box in the mail for us to return. Then, another ???? days until we get it back.

Hi....this is my first post on here so please be gentle........

I have a Dell Inspiron 600m which I have been using for just over 2 years with virtually no problems....but about a week ago I was on a plane playing solitaire and my screen showed a few green, blue, and red squares and then went black. It sounded like it was still running, though. I turned it off and tried again a few minutes later, and it was still black but sometimes if I moved the screen back and forth I would get a brief view of my desktop. I hooked it up to an external monitor, and everything is working fine. I have spoken with several places, and I get different answers every time so I was hoping to gain some insight via this forum. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated, thanks so much for your time!!

Hi,

I don`t know what answers you have received so far,

but here is mine ;

- the standby switch near the hinges is stuck/dirty or a cable connection is not making..

Or

- the power inverter (suppliies the backlight) is dying.

Both are user fixable tasks, but you may want to have someone look at it.

I have a Inspiron 20 Model 3048.  The machine was wiped completely clean.  I wanted to install Windows 10 on it.  When powering up, the DOS screen came up with the option of proceeding to Windows 10 because it was installed on there before it was wiped clean.  One of the other options on the screen at that time was pressing the F8 button for other selections.  I pressed F8 and the screen went completely black and has been that way ever since.  When I re-power on there is no Dell logo anymore and the F2, F8 and F12 buttons don't do anything.  There's really nothing wrong with the hardware; everything was working okay prior to pressing the F8 button.  The power-on LED light is white.  There are no beeps.  The fan is running.  The CPU light flashes.  Optical disc drive opens.  I've pressed the brightness control buttons on the monitor and it does light up the screen in various colors which it cycles through, so there's nothing wrong with the monitor.  I removed the button cell battery and ram and then re-installed them twelve hours later.  The same thing happens:  a blank screen.  I'm at a loss at what to do.  This thing is getting to where it will be a doorstop.  I can't do anything if nothing ever appears on the screen.  Please help.  Lenny

Hi,

I recently agreed to help my mother-in-law hook up her router. She had purchased a Linksys router and also a wireless adapter from Dell. As part of the process, she needed the driver for the adapter so I downloaded from Dell. Everything worked fine but, her computer was a mess (outdated anti-virus, no Microsoft (MS) updates, etc) so, being a good son-in-law, I decided to help her out.

I began by downloading all recommended drivers from Dell and then went to MS updates and began installing the critical updates. During the MS update process, I got an error about virtual memory being low. I clicked okay and rebooted. Now, all I get when I try to power up is a black screen. I can't do anything-can't access safe mode, BIOS or anything else. The only thing on the screen is the mouse pointer (which moves like it's supposed to).

I tried repairing with the Win XP Professional SP1 CD but I get an error message that says "DSentry.exe-Application Error, The exception unknown software exception (0xc00000fd) occurred in the application at location 0x004034e7. Click on OK to terminate the program. Click on CANCEL to debug the program". Nothing happens when you click OK or CANCEL.

I tried also tried booting from the Win XP Professional SP1 CD. There are 2 beeps, then nothing else happens.

There's no floppy drive.

I don't know what to do. Please help-it's my mother-in-law's computer! Thanks!

Mike

Hi AND EH,
What is the exact system model? Does the system power on and stay on or does it go off automatically? Do you see any leds come on and stay on when you press the power button?
Try using a flash light and check if any dim display in visible.
Run the LCD bist - Turn off the system and press and hold the "D" key + power button to turn on the system and it should run the LCD built in self test - see this link for more info - http://dell.to/1SkXNrG
While running the lcd test and the diags - swivel the lcd back and forth and see if the display comes on.
Also, try the onboard diags - press and hold the fn key + power button to turn on the system and it should initiate the diagnostics - check if any beeps are heard. This will help isolate the source of the issue.
Connect an external monitor and check if the display is seen.
Write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.
If there is no warranty, then you could contact our team to get a quote for a paid service call - http://dell.to/1vnT6CQ

just a few hours ago, a small pot of water spilled directly to my old-ish laptop, and it shut down instantly. I unscrewed the bottom and propped up a fan next to the exposed inside, and now the computer turns on again!
However, the screen does not. Whenever I turn it back off, it does so instantly. The same exactly thing happened to this poor laptop 3 years ago, when a quarter-cup of soda entered through the keyboard. Last summer, it worked again!
But, not as much liquid entered the laptop, so I`m sure the damage isn`t as severe. Plus, the computer still turns on, so I`m not completely hopeless.

I don`t want to spend a bunch of money sending it to GeekSquad or Dell, or wait a long time so it can dry off or whatever. Can anybody tell me what to do to get the monitor working again?

Ok so I bought this computer over a year ago and so I have no warranty. I have tried turning it on several times and I have ran every possible test on the mini. I can't even remember how it happened, I just know one day I turned it on and it the windows welcome screen came out, it charged and then it went into a c black screen with a little cursor sort of thing just flashing. I read a post here in which the tech says to go to the boot menu and insert the cd and then click on cd/dvd rom, then a screen will appear and I have to click on any button to proceed.

I did all of that except when the new screen comes out, I press any button and the screen does not change. I think I waited like 3 to 5 minutes and nothing.

What can I do?

Note: The F8 button and the F11 button lead straight to the black screen so those are not options.

Also you will need a new dvd player it sounds like yours is no good. But who ever fixes your pc should be able to confirm whether it is good or bad.
I hope this helps

I have updated my laptop 17R 5720 from windows 7 to 10. Everything was working good. Usually I connect my laptop to the external monitor. Few days ago I needed to use LCD on the laptop but it would load into black screen. When I connect to the monitor I see the booting and it works. As soon as disconnect from the monitor it is black. So I shut it down and boot it up few time but I don't see any booting information. Here what I did to debug:1. Reinstalled and updated graphics driver (Intel HD Graphics 4000). When un-installed the driver, couldn't even connect to the monitor. Blindly somehow got into the safe mode and from there installed driver back. 2. Checked bios settings. No settings for video there.3. Updated all divers (bios, chipset etc). Nothing changed.4. I thought maybe there is a problem with the LCD. So I ran built in LCD test (Fn + Power On) and it showed Red Green Blue and White colours. I didn't see any text or any other information on the screen though. Laptop was making beeping noises. So I'm not sure if it is good or bad. I checked on my brothers system, he has the same laptop, and on his it actually showed tests.
I tried different options with (windows + P) to see if the monitors will change. Nothing there also. When laptop boots up the black screen lights up sort of lighter black colour. I don't know whether there is a problem with windows 10 when it did one of its overnight updates or the problem with LCD or graphic card.... Read more

Hi,
Good work on troubleshooting. It may be an issue with the LCD screen or LVDS cable or the port on the system board where the LVDS cable gets connected. In the link below punch in the system service tag or express service code and you can access the user manual for removing and reseating LCD screen and LVDS cable. I would suggest you to perform the steps with a help of a computer technician. http://dell.to/18r60nIAlso, I would suggest you to update to the latest BIOS on the system. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the OS, then download the BIOS from BIOS section onto the system and install it.

Please let me know if this helps.

Hi all
Initially launching windows result in error message ,"NTLDR is missing" as The recovery repair feature couldn't help, we opted for more radical solution nd rebuilt the bootloader using the prompt command from scratch. Now when rebooting screen start loading nd then go blank with cursor..when I press the Dell media command "MD PARTITION MISSING" comes up...
I m trying to avoid reinstalling vista nd loosing my personal files so any advice to help reboot my laptop or somehow safeguard my files would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

Reading your post indicates that your primary concern is your files. Back them up with Ubuntu. If you cannot install Ubuntu it probably means that you have hardware problems. The only way to safeguard your stuff would be to remove the Hard Drive and put in another computer.

Hey,

I have a Dell Inspirion 1525.
Somehow, I have messed up the video settings I think.
If I hit media direct everything is fine, I can play a dvd no problem.
BUT, I can no longer get into Vista, I only get a black screen. The cursor is there and I can move it but the screen is totally black.

I called Dell and surprise, it's not hardware, it's software and I have to pay $$$ for them to help, and according to the tech, he may have to restore it, which I can do myself for free.

I have searched several forums, I found some people who fixed the issue by removing the battery and powering it up that way for a couple of seconds but that didn't work for me.

I also tried the suggestion of hooking it up to an external monitor but since I can't access anything I had no way of initiating the second monitor.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
Juanita

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to view this post. I am working on a laptop for a friend to try and fix the black screen. I am trying to determine if the hard drive needs to be replace. There was an Error 0x80070057 and wouldn't let me get into safe mode or anything else.

So, first I made a bootable usb which got me to the partition format section. But it wouldn't complete after following microsoft's instructions. That didn't work cause now there are no disks showing. Then I went into CMD and listed the disk's #2 had no media, Ok so I selected it to clean, which gave me "Virtual Disk Service error:There is no media in the device" then I tired to create a partition primary which gave me "No usable free extent could be found...." Now I am stuck thinking it may need a new hard drive. What do you think?

Side note: I am not doing this for profit ftr. also I didn't go straight to the forum, I tired to do as much research as possible before coming here.

Hey i got a problem, my roomates Dell Inspiron 600m got all screwy. I don't know why, but the screen wont turn on, the computer loads up, and you can hear it, but you see nothing. Anyone have any advice?

A:Dell Inspiron 600m black screen?

Is the screen's power light coming on to show that power is available? If not then either there is no power getting to the screen, or the screen is dead (as in failed in the circuitry)

If power is getting to it, then there is the possibility that the video card in the PC has failed.

Most likely is that there is a cable unplugged or poorly plugged.

Welcome! On my inspiron 1521, when the power is on only a black screen (do not even get to the BIOS), the fan is operating but none of the signaling LED lamps do not light up. I've tried removing the WLAN Card, CMOS battery, RAM. Unless you remove both RAM, flash me right and medium-sized LED flashlight, while left off. Please advise what could be wrong?P.S. This occurred after I did pasword recovery in the User Account, then I could do some work with the admin account, and since then it happens.

I have read all the posts and ordered a new inverter. It was actually very easy to change the inverter, but alas. After changing the inverter the screen still goes 'black' after a few minutes. It actually goes very very dim. I can barely see the outline of things on the screen. So, if the inverter was not the problem, what is the next thing I can try?

I spent a few hours last night searching this, as well as other forums and I just couldn't find the answer to my questions. I hate to be redundant, but I really need some advice.

Heres the skinny:

I have a Dell Inspiron running Windows 7 that is roughly a year and a half old (out of warranty). Last night, while using it, a bunch of error messages popped up (looked a lot like the kind of pop-ups associated with malware/viruses I've seen in the past), and before I could read them, my computer shut down. Upon restarting my computer, it went to the Dell splash screen and then went to a blank black screen (backlit). I've tried a number of things that I've read about on other forums, to no avail! I tried pulling the battery, holding the power button for 30-60 seconds and then restarting - nothing. I tried starting in safe mode, but pressing F8 doesn't work. The only buttons that seem to work are F2 and F12. I ran the Pre-boot System Assessment" and everything passes normally. I took the bottom cover off and pulled both my HDD and RAm and reinstalled them to make sure they were seated correctly - nothing. I plugged in another monitor to see if it was just the screen and the other monitor showed the same black screen.

1. What is my next move? Any suggestions would be helpful.
2. As I have a lot of files on my laptop that I would hate to lose, I plan on hooking up the HDD from my laptop to my desktop. If I have the HDD from my laptop hooked up in this ... Read more

I turned my laptop on today and there is a black border meaning that the screen is not being used completely, like it was yesterday. I measured the part of the screen being used and it measured 15.6" and it is advertised as that, but I am 100% sure that this black border was not here yesterday, or ever before. As seen in this Inspiron 5547 video at 2:19, the entire screen is being used and there is no black border  however on my 5547 there is a clearly visible black border which i used my ceiling fan light to show exactly where it is and how thick it is. This is in no way my fault and is apparently a known issue with this model, yet I am still expected to pay for a screen replacement. This will not be happening and I will gladly switch to a different brand(after being a 10+ year dell customer) if I must do so.

Hello!
Few month ago motherboard of my 7720 inspiron decided to pass away. suddenly the laptop had turned on and when plugging the AC adapter the blue light indicator turned off. I've understood that the motherboard is broken (after discussing with some technicians as well). recently I've purchased new motherboard and hopped that my laptop will be back to life but it won't...
after replacing with the new motherboard the light indicators are turning on and even the quick access buttons are turning on as well but the screen remains black and blank without the fan working! I've tried the following:
1. turning off the laptop and pressing the power button for 15-20 sec without power plugged in.
it helped but the windows logo got freeze and after rebooting the laptop once again it has returned to the same black and blank position.
2. display check (long pressing D) is OK.
3. I've even ran the diagnostics check and it's OK as well.
can it be just a bios update issue?
please help me!

Hi all. Looking for some fresh ideas about my Dell Inspiron 1545.

This is the story so far.

Screen was black, (could dimly make out the background) so fitted new inverter. Still the same.

Tested LCD on another Dell. Worked perfectly.

Fitted new video cable. Still the same.

Worked on external monitor. No problems.

So... after trying all the above I found a reasonably good value replacement motherboard. Bought and fitted.

Now the laptop is working fine, (I am using it now) but... on start up only when I turn it on for the first time in the morning the screen (as it did this morning) flicks off, goes black, and I hear it click, and it goes into hibernation? I can also make out the Dell logo faintly....so I wait, till it is properly hibernated, start up again, and it then works fine. Last night I used the whole evening no problems at all, rebooted, restarted several times, no issue..... Very odd.

I have checked settings in power options, all good.

Anyone got any suggestions?

I have read somewhere that it could be the CCFL backlight bulb, and if it is, I'm going to kick myself after spending all this money on it, but not so sure that is a simple or cheap fix. Still, I have the old motherboard, so.....

Hello,
I am having issues with my Dell 5547 laptop. There is a roughly 1cm border all around the screen which wasn't there before and I noticed it now as my taskbar is adjusted 1cm up but when I put google chrome in full screen it sort of chops the top bar down a bit.
I noticed through google searches other people have had similar issues with Dell laptops however I can't seem to find a solution because every time I try to turn off the "maintain display scaling" it won't let me turn it off.

A:Dell Inspiron 5547 Black Border around screen

The product in the product video has the same black border. It can not be "'fixed''Some of the photos do not seem to have this which is pretty poor form, but the screen size and resolution are as promised.Personally, I would've liked a smaller laptop overall, but if it had to be this size, then I would rather small bezels and a black border, than big slabs of plastic on all sides. It makes it look better when its off and I don't notice it that much.I've also heard people say that this is to do with the touch functionality?? Maybe it gives you a better ability to swipe in from the sides... I don't know.Still, there is nothing wrong with your laptop. If this is a deal breaker for you, you might have a decent argument under consumer laws to get a refund. They really can't show pictures that cover this up and make the screen seem bigger than it is. But the video was there, and the specs are all honest.

Hi

My Dell Inspiron 1525 crashed two months ago, the screen completely froze so I had to power down from the power button as the screen was completely frozen. I then couldn't get back in, I got as far as a black screen with cursor, Windows Vista would not re-load or go in to systems recovery. I had to call Dell and they charged me 60 to go through a clean install of Vista which wiped all my files. Now two months later the same problem has occurred, I wondered if anyone could shed any knowledge as I refues to pay another 60 for the pleasure of a call to Dell and I cannot afford to lose my data this time round. What happened this time was that my computer completely crashed again, there's no way to shut down when this happens but to 'power off' and this seems to snooker everything up..... help, I think a new laptop should be a bit more robust than this

motherboard chipset: H61
I've upgraded this machine before: PSU 380W and nVIDIA GTS 450
It works fine for a long time.
Today I upgraded my other PC and got a spare PSU 500W and AMD 7950
So I just replaced the PSU and GPU in my old Inspiron 620
When I turned on this computer, nothing showed up, just pure black screen without signal, and there's no beep on this motherboard, so no alert of course. Then I pushed the power button, it turned off immediately which means it didn't pass POST at all.
Now I'm using it with 500w PSU and GTS 450, works fine.
It's clear that the 500w PSU (12v rail 41A) is enough for this system, both PSU and 7950 works fine in my other PC with a more powerful CPU (TDP 115W).
So I suspect it's the compatible problem between H61 motherboard of 620 and AMD Radeon HD 7950
The BIOS version is A10. It's the newest one released in 2013.
Thanks for your help!

after that they couldnt get it to turn on, the laptop itself would turn BUT the screen wouldnt.

after a couple hours they managed to turn it on, but it froze again

also the laptop has had issues with the battery/charger

it wont function unless the charger adapter it plugged into an outlet.

if not the screen will go into a dark haze then it would shut off.

maybe this has to deal with it or not, im not sure...

so i tried to put in my windows operating cd, to repair it, but the screen is still black when i insert it. i can here it loaded but i see nothing...

I have a Dell Inspiron N5110 laptop.  I purchased it mid 2011 and although it is 5 years old, it has been an extremely reliable basic home computer. After relentless prompting from Microsoft, on 29 July I finally hit the button and upgraded from Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) to Windows 10.  While I know the upgrade was completed, unfortunately now I can’t successfully use the laptop and am trying to work out what to do next.  The current status is:

Laptop display - a fully black screen (no cursor). This means I get no visual prompts using just the laptop when I turn it on or shut down power to the machine.
External Monitor display - eventually fully black screen with cursor, but able to see / access log on and log off screens.

Using the VGA port to connect the laptop to the monitor, when I first turn on the laptop, on the monitor I get the standard Dell and Windows 10 login information before it finally turns black (with visible cursor).  The laptop screen stays fully black.  Therefore, using the external monitor display, I was able to complete the Windows 10 installation (accept agreement), and using ‘’control, alt, delete’’ I can do a normal shut down process.
Using the HDMI port to connect the monitor, it is more or less the same as for the VGA port above, but it takes a few seconds more before the monitor screen finally turns black. The monitor screen displa... Read more

I have a 2 1/2 yr old Dell Inspiron 1000. The battery is kaput and has been for a long time. always run off a power cord. now the laptop will not boot up (?). there are small green LED lights...two on the front, 4 in the back. they do come on when i turn on the power switch...at least some of them. I heard the hard drive spinning and the fan coming on...just like it would boot up normally, but then nothing. everything stops....then screen never comes on and its sits there...with a couple LED lights on, but nothing. like its in stand-by. This happened to me a year ago and i found a forum somewhere where everyone was having the same problem. they took the computer apart, removed something, then put it all back together and it worked. i just can't remember where i saw it at or what forum. this seems to be a fairly common problem with the Dells. If anyone can help me out here, i'd appreciate it. i just bought a new laptop and the same day the Dell crapped out before i could transfer all my information to my new laptop.

Thanks in advance.

My computer goes to a black screen even while I am working on it. Sometimes I can see the task bar, other times I can't. If I press the Power button, I can get the screen back and other times I can't so I have to power down by holding the Power button.

The system also shuts down on its own and then freezes on the blue "Windows is shutting down" screen.

It is taking a long time for the computer to recognize anything I attach to the USB port.

Typing is very slow. I can type a URL and sit here and wait for the computer to finish my typing.

Windows was reinstalled, drivers updated; problem continues.

Any ideas what I can do?

Do NOT fix anything. One or more of the TSG members will review the log and provide comments/actions. I am not qualified to provide analysis of the HJT logfile, but others are, so be patient and I'm sure one of them will get to it.

A:black screen pxe-e61 error for inspiron n5050 windows 7

Hi nombie88,
Please run the diagnostics to confirm the hardware functionality. Here are the steps for it:

Tap the F12 key on startup.
Use the Arrow keys to highlight the Diagnostics option.
The Diagnostics starts running the quick test without waiting for user input.
To select a specific device to test, you can tap the Esc key.
Please make a note of any error message that appears on the screen, also make sure that you note down the validation code too.
Once quick test completes, please run a thorough test on the hard drive by selecting the 'Thorough' under Test Mode option.
Please make a note of end result of diagnostics.

If the diagnostics pass, lets check if the hard drive is getting detected. Here are the steps to check that:

Boot to BIOS, by tapping the F12 key on the startup.
Please check under the Main tab, if the hard drive is getting detected as shown in image below:

Please share the findings.

Yeah, so I accidentally bumped my laptop and caused it to fall about 3-4 feet pretty hard onto an amp. It was off, so I turned it on and it is making noises like it is powering up, but nothing appears on the screen. I googled around and when I hold a flashlight up to the screen I can see my desktop. I opened up the LCD panel thingy, disconnected and reconnected the screen inverter to see if it was just a loose connection, but the problem prevails. I just want some opinions on whether or not it is a busted screen inverter or something else before I go buy a new one.

Thanks in advance.

A:Inspiron 1521 Laptop Powering on, but screen is black.

Probably a busted inverter (since you can see your Desktop with a flashlight)
Try connecting an external monitor to it (there's usually a VGA port on the side of most laptops).

You may also want to check to ensure that the screen cable is tightly plugged into the mobo.

Hey guys

Trying to fix an issue with the mrs' Dell notebook; which is an Inspiron 15z 5523.
1st thing - it's out of warranty, so need to try a self-fix if possible, if not, I'm sensing it may be time for a new laptop for her so any tips on data recovery will be appreciated down the line.
Also worth mentioning that this has come about a couple of days after installing Windows 10 - unsure if that's related, but worth a mention.
The issue is that no matter what, we're faced with a blank black screen, with no backlights or LED anywhere. It's now started beeping 3 times in succession which as far as I can tell from the troubleshooting (here) is a system board failure.
For now though, I've done the following:

Allowed the battery to drain and try running on AC power
Reset the motherboard (using the paperclip/reset button method)
Troubleshooted using the above link
Confirmed that it is out of warranty

The main priorities are trying to get this working again and if not, getting the data from the laptop to allow us to get it onto a new one if necessary.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jesse

A:Inspiron 15z 5523 Notebook - 3 beeps, black screen

Yahooo!! Sorted!!!

Thanks guys for all your help! It's really appreciated!

A few things that I noticed. In terms of getting it restarted when the three beeps were happening:
1. There were no clear "this will always work" instructions. Doing the right thing will work sometimes and not others.
2. The most consistent method I had which resulted in not just clearing the beeps, but a successful boot was as follows:
a. Remove CMOS battery.
b. Either Remove main battery, or move the little switch under the keyboard (to the left) into the off position. This just disconnects the battery.
c. Press and hold the power button to drain the capacitors (Now that the cover is off, this is just a tiny silver button...so you'll need a screwdriver or something to easily press it....preferable an electrical screwdriver!)
d. Leave the computer in this state for some time. At least 10 minutes, but if you're having difficult, do it overnight. I've no idea why this delay should be necessary, especially after draining the capacitors, but it seemed to help make it more consistent.
e. Put the CMOS battery back in, and either put the main battery back in or slide the little switch under the keyboard back to on.
f. Again wait 10-15 minutes. I've no idea why this seemed to help, but it did. Perhaps the CMOS battery does something after being reinserted.
g. Do NOT connect any USB drive. Inserting a USB drive triggers a startup in this case. Instead you should just c... Read more

Since I purchased this computer, I had daily problems where the screen will randomly go dark/black and the computer becomes unresponsive (even during work)- the power button is still on/lit and the computer appears to have entered hibernation or sleep.  The computer will not respond to any other commands and only a hard powerdown/restart is possible.
The problem happens randomly and I have not been able to correlate it with any action, program, temperature issue, or other causality.  I have run full diagnostics and all of the software/drivers are updated.  The problem existed since I purchased the computer, and has remained since I added memory and a M2 SSD drive to the open bays.
I initially thought it was a hibernate/sleep or power configuration issue, so I did not initially return the computer within the initial 30 day period.  All of my efforts to turn off hibernate/sleep setting via GUI and CLI have been unsuccessful.
When it works, it works great.

Hi,

Any ideas on this issue would be really appreciated, as i have no idea where to start:

Since a few days ago every time I power on my laptop, it displays the initial dell screen, a loading bar fills up and then the screen goes black. At this point the Windows (XP SP3) loading screen would normally appear, but the screen stays black indefinitely.

Note that it looks black in the way that screens look black when they are on but not displaying anything, and not like when it is powered down.

I had a lot of hard drive failures earlier this year, so replaced the drive in May, for a new Toshiba one, but has been running really well since then. In my experience hard drive failures give me an error screen and not the nothingness I am currently experiencing.

If it points to anything, the battery warning light has recently started flashing, but the laptop is currently plugged in, I have an auxiliary battery in the optical drive bay and the main, 'worn out' battery was lasting for about 40 mins the day prior to this failure.

Again, any thoughts would be much appreciated as I can normally get thing sorted once they have been diagnosed!

Many thanks in advance for your help,

Lewis Moore

A:Dell Inspiron 510m boots to black screen

Update:
I loaded the boot menu and tried to boot from a windows CD to run diagnostics/repair but the boot failed in a similar fashion to that described above.

I ran pre-boot diagnostics from the boot menu and they all came back fine, it suggested running an extended diagnostics by booting from a dell drivers and utilities CD. Boot failed again.

I tried, however to boot to a linux live CD (Kubuntu 6.0), and the laptop happily booted to the live CD.

Alright, my friends laptop is a Dell Inspiron about 3 years old and she said she received a blue screen with error codes, it then restarted and started to load and then it froze during the process.

after that they couldnt get it to turn on, the laptop itself would turn BUT the screen wouldnt.

after a couple hours they managed to turn it on, but it froze again

also the laptop has had issues with the battery/charger

it wont function unless the charger adapter it plugged into an outlet.

if not the screen will go into a dark haze then it would shut off.

maybe this has to deal with it or not, im not sure...

so i tried to put in my windows operating cd, to repair it, but the screen is still black when i insert it. i can here it loaded but i see nothing...

much appreciated

Hi,

I lost my tool bar's off Internet explorer to to rectify this I thought I should do a restore to about a month and a half ago when the laptop was running fine. Now when I turn it on I'm getting a black screen with curser but no way of logging in etc. The cd rom is working so I popped the windows vista reinstallation disc in but have no way of making it run. No keys seam to be working apart from the on/off. Any advice would be appreciated.

A:Black screen dell inspiron 1525 after restore

There could be many reasons for your issue, but maybe the system restore didn't complete successfully...
1.) Did you turn off your antivirus software prior to starting the restore?)

2.) Did you actually need to do a system restore to get the toolbar back on Internet Explorer?

3.) Have you tried using Startup Repair? (link below)

On start-up, I get the Dell screen, followed by options for the F-2 and F-12 buttons. I then get a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner.

I tried removing the battery and pressing the power button for 40 seconds, no luck. Starting in Safe Mode is not possible either.

I got some CD's from Dell. One is for the Dell OS, and the other is for Drivers and Utilities.

My main concern is saving whatever files, documents and photos I can. Any idead if that's possible?

Thank you

If all the steps fail then, I would create a new Windows 7 Installation DVD using a different computer, and then perform a clean install without all the Dell bloatware;

I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 with Windows XP installed. I have the laptop since April 2007.
Yeasterday I left the laptop in stand-by for about 1 hour, when I got back the screen was black and could not be revived in any mode.
I have switched off the PC by pressing the power button until power went off.

When I try to start the laptop the Dell logo would come on with a weird pattern of green dots in the back ground, then the usual XP logo would come on, still green dot pattern all over the screen and then the screen would go blank.

I have ran all the available system diagnostics for Memory, Harddisk and system componenents at start-up and they all passed. In addition the laptops power sources are working well.

Then I have run the genuine Dell-XP CD Rom and run the 'Repair Installation' option.
This would run normally and even the screen was normal until after the first Boot request. Then rebootet the PC and configuration would go on for about 10 minutes ... then the screen just blanks out again.

Please help ... I need some fresh ideas on what else I could do.

I have a dell inspiron 1525 laptop. Its a few years old. Recently the screen has started fading to black after a few minutes of use. I can hook up an external monitor and it works fine. In fact when I plugged in the video cable from the external monitor (even though the external monitor had no power cord and wasn't turned on) the laptop screen popped back up for a couple of minutes and then went black again. There is still a very faint image on the screen but you can only see it if you shine a light directly on it.

I've read that this could be a problem with the invertor or the backlight. I guess the inverter is cheap and relatively easy to replace but the backlight is neither of those.

Would anyone know by these symptoms what the issue is?

Thanks for your hellp,

Matt

Hi! I have Dell Inspiron 15-3521 and I am using it for atleast three years. This one is bought in Abu Dhabi, UAE and was used by my sister for about a year or two then she shipped it here in the Philippines because I needed it. It has Windows 8.1 when it arrived here. The problem occured yesterday. It was perfectly running when i used it when i got home from school but Chrome was annoyingly kept on not responding. I refreshed the desktop before I reloaded Chrome when I noticed that the desktop icons were not showing up. I shrugged it off thinking my laptop is just being slow. Still annoyed on Chrome, I decided to turn my laptop off and took a nap. Note that I didnt plugged it off. After 3 hours of nap, I turned it on and it actually booted but a black screen. I turned it off and on again for about three times but still a black screen. I tried to turn it on inserting its battery then it showed the Recovery page of Windows saying that Windows didn't load correctly. I turned it off again then plugged it again without its battery. It showed the same page then I asked a friend on what should I do. He told me to try opening it on safe mode. I did but it showed that automatic repair couldn't repair my pc. I did a second attempt to enter safe mode. After about 20 minutes, it booted on safe mode. I then decided that I will just reset it so I back up important files on my USB flashdrive. I tried to reset it but only the drive on which Windows is installed. It worked but after r... Read more

I'd suggest you run Diagnostic tool to check for any hardware issue that might be causing the black screen on your computer.
1. Turn off your computer
2. Power on computer, quickly start tapping the F12 key continuously. You should see the Diagnostic tab, please click it. After the quick tests has completed then I suggest you run 'Thorough' test mode on hard drive. Reports back any error code.

Hi, I have had my Dell for just under three years and never had a problem. I upgraded to Windows 10 last night and it worked fine the following morning but then unexpectedly the laptop had turned itself off. Now, if I press the power button, the screen does not do anything and after about five seconds there are three beeps, which then reoccur.I have investigated and found that this model has not been tested, however Microsoft failed to mention that when telling me my specifications were fine for an upgrade.I am wondering whether I can do anything cheap which will both save my laptop and all my work :(. I have already tried physically checking my RAM and reinstalling windows 8 to no avail.
Any help is much appreciated.

I tried to restore to factory settings F11 but the laptop wouldn't let me.

Tried to restore from Dells disk but the computer wouldn't load the restore disk.

Now the computer on startup has a black screen and will not boot up. None of the F keys will work. Keyboard was working fine until this error.

I decided to purchase a new hard drive. Installed the new drive and the computer is doing the same thing.

Any ideas?

I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right forum, but I almost sure it is not hardware related.

Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop, Pentium M, 1.5 Ghz, 60g HDD, 1024MB DDr2 SDRAM, ATI Mobility Radeon x300

I can boot into SET-UP and all works fine,

Booting up in normal mode, it makes it past POST and the XP Splash screen, then just goes black. I can move the curser around and that is it.
Same thing is Safe Mode, but I can see the "Safe Mode" borders in the corners and up top.

I hooked an external monitor to it and get the same results on it.

I went into boot menu and chose diagnostics, and all passed, even the inverter. Was able to see all colors during the diag and as well on the Dell Drivers and Diagnostics CD I'm running right now.

I found some similar problems by Googling, but most said they didn't even make it to the splash screen, or it works in safe mode, but not normal mode, so nothing that has a clear resolve of what I have here.

Thanks, Terry

A:Dell Inspiron 6000 blank black screen

Update...
While running the Dell Drivers and Diagnostic Cd, during the the seek test on the hard drive, as it was almost done, I got a "Exception occurred in MODULE DISK.MDM! Warning: Error reading File! Press any key to abort" So I pressed a key and it rebooted, but now says the computer is missing the HDD. I went in Setup and Device Info/Primary Hard Drive, it says {none}, where as before it showed the 60G HDD.

I would not have thought a hard drive would have caused the first problem, or else it wouldn't have booted from the get go. Right?

Any ideas out there? Are the two issues one and the same? I would like to find out before I replace the HDD just to find out it still won't boot properly.

Thanks again for any help!

I've got an odd problem here. On my Compaq Presario CQ60-615DX, it runs fine as long as it's plugged in. Once I unplug it and run it on the battery, once it gets down to about 87-88% or so, the screen just goes black, but doesn't shutdown and I'm unable to do anything except remove the battery and restart. My first thought was a battery problem, but the fact that it keeps running even though the screen is black makes me wonder if that's the case or not. Anyone else experience this or any ideas to help?

A:when running on battery, screen goes black, but laptop is still running

You laptop is due to the power plan settings, refer to point 1.
Normally, the laptop can return to display mode upon moving the cursor &or keyboard being press.

1. Go to Control Panel, select Hardware & Sound; select Power Options.
Select the Power plan with button marked, and Change Plan settings to view on the options.

2. If you are using main power, best is to remove &or unplugged the battery.
If the battery is always plugged in, while using main power, this cause the battery to failed in the long run.
Unless you need to charge battery, then plug in the main power.
If battery is almost 100% then remove it if you use main power.
I had one laptop (from my bro) who always battery was plugged in and also use main power.
The battery was now useless, cannot hold charge.

A:Dell Inspiron 14 5459 suddenly black screen and shut down

Hi ZADRIANARDI,
Does this happen with or without the adapter connected? What applications are using when the display goes blank? Is the mouse cursor still seen and active when the display goes blank? Does the system overheat? Are there any bluescreens / system crashes?
Update the BIOS - http://dell.to/28V3xvh - and reinstall the chipset drivers and video drivers from the same site and check if it works fine.
If the issue is still unresolved, then connect an external monitor and check if display goes blank on the external monitor and the LCD.
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - do not make any changes here - leave the system in BIOS environment for as long as possible with the adapter connected  and see if the display goes blank while in BIOS.

Hi Guys,
Good Morning, I updated my Dell Inspiron 15R 5537 Laptop from Windows 8 Pro to Windows 8.1 Pro by using Store Application.
After Waiting for almost 6 hours, Update was done and after Windows setup, Display was black, Cursor was blinking.....I checked in Microsoft website and i found that not only me and many Dell customers are facing the same issue. i was luckily able to boot to safe mode and i uninstalled the both of my video drivers and i am back to my windows 8.1. After i update my video drivers as mentioned in the link below, still my screen blacks out. So i had no other option than resetting my pc to windows 8 pro.
Video Driver Link : http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/inspiron-15r-5537?driverId=PWTRP&osCode=W864&fileId=3287401962&languageCode=en&categoryId=VI
When i was checking for latest driver for Intel Graphics & AMD Radeon that supports windows 8.1, I am able to find a driver in dell website.
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/sg/en/sgdhs1/DriverDetails/Product/inspiron-17r-5737?driverId=6GGGM why it's not yet updated in the corresponding product driver list.... Actually i think these are the fix. I am not sure.
If any one has updated and i need a dell support for this

After so much for research, I was able to figure it out the problem is because of Intel Video Driver. There is a beta Intel video driver package which supports Windows 8.1. Try to update that package and post your results. As i have already rolled back to windows 8. It will take atleast 4-6 hours for me to update the status. The link is below for Dell Inspiron 15R 5537 Model.

A family friend of my has a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop she got in 2007. She had it in the trunk of her car for an entire year! When she turned it on, everything worked fine but she accidentally knocked it off the table on to a hardwood floor. Ever since that happened, the computer starts up but sits on a black screen. I don't see a Windows Logo or anything. Just a black screen.
However, when starting it up. There's a very faint beeping sound(like the sound you hear when the car door is open).
And after about 10 seconds, there's a beeping noise(a lot louder than the constant beeping before).

Any suggestions as to what it can be? Is it a damaged hard drive or is it the screen?

Update:
I pulled the hard drive out and it sounds like a babies rattle. So I assume the hard drive was shattered.
Theres no damage on the outside, but the damage must be underneath. But the screws are too tiny for me to examine the damage.
Unless this is normal for a hard drive to sound like it's filled with beads.

A:Dell Inspiron 1545 Stuck on Black Screen at Startup

Sounds like the HDD is ruined. The beeps you hear might indicate more hardware problems. Take note of the order of the beeps, (the number of beeps and if there are long and or short beeps) then search Dell Support for info on beep codes.

You should try using a bootable CD or DVD disc to see if the laptop will operate at all before spending money or the time fixing it.
