Dell 8900 Desk Top XPS

Q: Dell 8900 Desk Top XPS

I am in search of figuring out what to do. I have had this XPS 8900 for about 2 years. 1st year ran fine. 2nd year I was doing a recovery and our power flickered and nothing is on this desktop. will power on but nothing. How do I get recovery disks to put back in what it came with? Thank you Chris

A: Dell 8900 Desk Top XPS

Recovery disks will not do any good if the computer won't boot. You need to find and replace the damaged hardware if any. Try turning it on and immediately keep tapping F12 without waiting for any screen to see if you can get into the boot menu to run hardware diagnostics and include a custom test of the hard drive. Try booting to your repair disk.
Report the status of all the lights and explain what you mean by power on but nothing-- nothing on the screen or nothing on the drive or no sounds or fans, etc.

called dell support today to ask about a knocking noise when i start computer ,so he ran some hardware tests and every thing seems OK,so then he checked the registry and there was whole bunch errors ,he said that the warranty does not cover software issues ,this computer is a refurbished unit about 4 mo. old,he proceeded to tell me it would cost $150 to fix this ,The computer seems to run good,so i refused to accept this, running win 10 latest edition ,he was kind of pushing me to spend the money to fix this"problem".I always thought that the warranty covered everything, computer is running great ,why fix something thats not-broke.i have been buying dell for the last 20 yrs. this will be my last dell!!!!!!

Hi Everyone, I bought a new computer the Dell xps 8900 and I received it and set it up March 3. I had some issues with it and had a tech come over and work on it. I started having problems with the mouse not waking up. I would have to un plug it from the back of the tower. Dell replaced that computer and I just got another one lase Wednesday and set it up on Friday. I did add a printer and Acrobat Reader and I noticed that the computer came not to go in to sleep mode. I changed the settings and it seemed to be working and now is doing the same thing. It went to sleep and I tried restarting it. That did not work and I used the arrow keys to shut it down and then restarted it and the mouse worked. Is this a windows problem or a computer problem? does any one know or have this problem it's windows 10.

I have a new Dell XPS 8900 connected to a Dell U2413 monitor using the HDMI to mini-HDMI cable.  When I switch off the monitor (to save the screen and energy), the PC jumps into an unrecoverable power saving mode, shutting down all open applications in doing so.  The mouse and keyboard lock up.  The only way to restart the PC is to press the power button for several seconds (hard reboot).   This began happening recently.  What can be done to fix?

Two months ago bought a Dell 8900 from Best Buy. After 20 days, it would not start, same with the next 8900 replacement... only fewer days. The first gameware as a replacement did not start at all. The Alienware Aurora worked beautifully for 3 days and then would not start. In the 8900's,,, got the blinking amber lights on the start button. Tech is coming to replace motherboard. What the heck is happening? Could it be the monitor... or the external hard drive or what? Come on Dell,,, what's up? I have a Dell XP Laptop as a back up using the same external hard ddrive.

Hi, this should be a relatively easy question to answer for those in the know.  If I order up a new 8900 desktop with the GTX 970 card, will it have a DVI port on that card?  I have a monitor I am fond of and want to continue to use, but it only has DVI.

A:Dell XPS 8900 DVI

Typical GTX 960/970/980 has 1 DVI  , 3 Display Port and , 1 HDMI.
Cant imagine ANY card of this series with NO DVI.

Worked fine until today, 1/1/2016 -- Happy New Year, NOT!
Changed power cable, use a different outlet (other items like LAN router and network printer power just fine). Computer will still not start.
When I plug power into computer power light comes on bright then goes out (this seemed normal before). Then if I push the power button computer does not start.
I do appear to get a orange light sequence of 2-1 after trying to turn it on -- and that continues. May be some sort of POST signal?
I can return the computer (not my first choice) after our upcoming trip. But I'd prefer to get it up and running today. Have some work to do.
Phil

A:Dell XPS-8900 Will Not Start

More info. I had four external USB3 drives attached, two powered and two are Seagate Wireless drives -- one of which is recharged via its USB port.
Unplugging only that second Seagate drive lets the machine start up. So the issue may be too much of a current drain on the USB board.
Once booted, the system seems to run fine with that Seagate Wireless drive attached, and it will Restart with it attached -- just not boot from a Shut Down condition.
Not sure I really understand this, but I can live with it.
If someone seems something more insidious in this behavior, please advise; purchased the XPS-8900 at COSTCO and still have about 55 days to return it if it is defective!

I purchased a new Dell XPS 8900 desktop, 64-bit operating system with Windows 10 Home about a month ago. The computer has never made a sound, whether it's Windows system sounds or sounds associated with programs. No sounds come from either the third-party speakers or the headphones, which work with other computers. So far I've tried the following:
Installed the newest version of the RealTek High Definition Audio driver from Dell website (it's green-checked on Control Panel)
Did speaker setup with Dell Audio Manager
Performed speaker setup and testing through Control Panel > Sound (testing produced no sound)
Inspected cable connections multiple times
Performed audio diagnostics through Dell Support website (the computer failed the first test, the second wouldn't continue because of a specious time zone issue, which didn't exist)
The speakers are plugged into the green jack on the back panel, and the headphones are plugged into front headphone jack. One thing I did do was to edit the registry to install the Windows sound mixer, which was not present in Windows 10. I did add a video card and another internal 3TB WD hard drive to the computer, but none of those actions has affected my old computer.
I've tried about everything I know so far. I believe this is likely some kind of software glitch or conflict, but I can't get the computer to make a sound. Control panel tells me that everything is working normally. Does any... Read more

Hey guys,
My Dell xps 8900 have 8Gb ram (4Gb x2) DDR4 2133 UDIMM. Currently it has 2 empty slots. I just bought an 8Gb (8Gb x1) ram DDR4 -2133 UDIMM Crucial stick. I make sure it has the same CL, voltage, etc. I run Crucial scan and it says this stick is compatible with the Dell 8900. My question is can I just add this single stick to the system to make it a total 16Gb, if so which slot do I put it in? so it will end up with 4x2 sticks and 8x1 stick.  I've read somewhere saying the Dell xps 8700 wouldn't boot if the dual slots are not filled up. Mine is a Dell xps 8900, however.

A:Dell xps 8900 adding more ram

Ummm....you have a problem...
The XPS 8900 has 4 RAM slots. So in order to install one new 8GB module, you'd have to uninstall one of the existing 2GB modules.
Even if you do that, the XPS 8900 doesn't support 14 GB of RAM (3x2GB + 1x8GB =14GB). The supported configs are:  8 GB, 16 GB, 24 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB.
And it's always best to install RAM in matched pairs. So you probably need to remove all four 2GB modules and install 2x8 GB to get 16GB. Or, if crucial will take the 8 GB back, you may be able to exchange it for 4x4GB to get 16 GB, assuming that works out cheaper.
EDIT: If you might ever want to go above 16 GB, it might be prudent to use 2x8 GB now which will leave you with 2 empty slots in which you could install 2x4GB (for total of 24 GB), or 2x8GB (for total of 32 GB).

Hi I was wondering if I can purchase and use a MSI R9 380 GAMING 4G for my new Dell XpS 8900 computer? I am concerned about the stock psu not being enough power for this card. I belive the stock psu is 460w but this card has a System Requirements Power Consumption of 150W.
And this is the card I would like to use:

The stock 460w is designed for 150w of video power. That card uses 225w or more.  8 Pin = 150w  + 75w from the X16 slot = 225w if it uses a 6 pin and An 8 pin this is 300w

I recently purchased the following Dell 8900
Dell XPS x8900-3756BLK Desktop (6th Generation Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM, 2 TB HDD + 32 GB SSD) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 745 with 4GB DDR3

I would like to replace the graphics card (I flight sim a lot) with a GTX 960 4GB DDR5 card, either myself or have a computer repair place do it.
Which specific cards would be easiest to install in my machine - if I search for GTX 960, I see all kinds of different length cards, 1 and 2 fans, etc.
I'd like to purchase the following card, if it will be easily installed...
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 960 4GB GDDR5 PCiE Graphics Cards GV-N960OC-4GD
Would a new graphics card be difficult to install myself?   What is involved?
Thank you,
Steve

A:Which GTX 960 Can I use to upgrade my Dell XPS 8900

The XPS 8900 and 8700 share the same case so if you look in this thread you'll see the cards that fit and the cards that needed some case cutting.
en.community.dell.com/.../19611037
I can personally vouch for the the MSI GTX 970 gaming 4GB fits so check the size (length and height) and if less it should fit without issue.
If you can wait a few weeks or maybe a month, the GTX 1080 looks to be an amazing card for the price and power draw. It is going to be slightly more expensive, however much more capable.
The install is easy. search for youtube videos and you should find one.
edit: and you can sell your GTX 745 on ebay and recoup some of the cost.

Apologies if my questions are redundant to other posts in the forum, BUT, I couldn't find ones that covered my questions specifically.
I'm hoping to add a OCZ Trion 150 960GB 2.5" 7mm SATA III Internal Solid State Drive TRN150-25SA3-960G to the Dell XPS 8900 I just purchased. Currently it has a 1TB HDD but no second drive.
My questions:

Is the SSD I intend to purchase compatible with this desktop?
If not, why (ie, what should I look for in an alternate)? And what is a good alternative to the SSD I'm proposing.
Does the XPS 8900 come with spare power and SATA for a second drive?
Do I  need a 3.5" mounting adapter?

Thanks in advance. Again, apologies for the simplistic questions, but I'd appreciate a response.

I bought a lightly used Dell XPS 8900 computer. The original owner did not reset the computer. It is erratic. I tried to create a system disk but got an error message. Apparently that's not an option.  I don't know if this system is encrypted or what the problem is. Recently I moved my XPS 8900's internals to a bigger case. When powering on, it appears to all work but when it gets to the dell screen, it goes black. I can press f2 or f12 for the setup menus but it never gets there. It appears to be a POST problem, with blinking power button and keyboard capslock and scroll lock LEDs. It blinks in a pattern of 3-7-1-6. I cannot seem to get it to boot. Anyone have a clue what the problem might be?

Hello and thank you very much --
Yesterday the cursor disappeared so I turned the pc off manually.  When I turned it back on after a few seconds all was OK.  Cursor disappeared again, so I tried the same thing, but the computer now won't turn back on at all.
The start button lights up amber then immediately goes out.  No sounds.  I have unplugged and plugged back in all the cords from wall, router, modem.  The lights on modem and router are all normal,  The laptop I am using as I type right now is hooked up to the exact same system, I'm not using the laptop wirelessly.  I have also unplugged the power and held down the start button for 10 seconds as was suggested on Dell's website.  But pc still won't respond.  If I unplug and replug  the whole thing from the wall or plug and replug the AC adapter, I see the Dell logo for a moment on the screen and then the message it is going to power saving mode, then black.
The pc that won't turn on is a Dell 8900 which I bought 6 months ago and has worked perfectly up to now.  I use Windows10.
What should I do next?

Might be power supply or video card.  If you use a surge protector or power strip, remove those and try connecting PC directly to the wall outlet.

I recently purchased an XPS 8900 with Win 10 Home installed. I want to run the OS & apps off an SSD, but the methods to get that to happen have not worked so far, namely cloning the HD to the SSD. Pretty much everything I've seen on the forums here and on the internet don't seem to take into consideration UEFI, which has proven be an enormous PITA in this process, as i have to keep switching between UEFI and Legacy modes to get the system to (try to) boot off the SSD.
The install is fresh - i.e. no user data yet, so I'm not worried about losing that data. The recovery partitions are intact. I created a recovery USB drive from within Windows 10. Any guidance on this would be welcome. Thanks!

So I just bought a Dell XPS 8900 i7 6700 from the outlet.  I intend to upgrade to a a newer z170m mobo that will support non-k oc, memory upgrade to faster memory that will oc, bigger psu, and gtx 980ti, and clone old drive to ssd drive.   What issues will I have with drivers, licensing of windows 10, etc..  I'm going to use a water cooler for the cpu.

A:Dell XPS 8900 i7 6700 upgrade questions

Huh?Sorry, what you're suggesting makes no sense.
The Windows license is LOCKED to the Dell motherboard.  You can NOT use a Dell OEM license on a non Dell motherboard. The XPS 8900 case does not support a water cooler.  Your only option would be to put the radiator through the front, and then you'd really need an air barrier to separate the exhaust from the air intake area above. You should also upgrade the power supply.   You'll also want to change the DRAM. So, you're taking about another motherboard, another case, water cooling, and another Windows License.  You can get a Windows 10 license for under $100.
So, by buying the XPS 8900, you got a CPU.  Imho, buying an i7-6700K is better.  They are specially screen to support higher clock rates.  In fact, you'll be lucky if a non-K can clock as high as the base clock of the 6700K.  Intel has been trying to support the K demand.  So, people can forget about "being lucky" and getting a non-K that can clock as high a a K-version.  The 6700K cpus are coming down in price.
Fwiw, I strongly suggest getting an ASUS motherboard.Good Luck.

I have been a Dell customer for many, many years and have never had a problem with order deliveries until now.  I ordered a Dell XPS 8900 special edition on 7/16 and have had three different estimated delivery dates posted on the websites (all wrong), the latest of which was today.  I have been in contact with customer service and told of a parts shortage (after placing the order of course).  This is highly unlike any experience I have ever had with Dell.  Is anyone else experiencing delivery delays and inaccurate delivery estimates, or am I just "lucky"?

A:Dell XPS 8900 - Delivery Date Changed Twice (and still not here)

This is a fairly new model and delays do happen -- and systems are not built by Dell, but by contractors outside the US -- the supply chain is long and yes -- delays are almost inevitable.

I am planning on adding an SSD and doing a clean install of Win 10 on my new XPS 8900. I've spent a lot of time researching this and have notes and tutorials to follow that I feel comfortable with. The one area that I have not found good answers and only general advice is on reinstalling the drivers. The advice has been to go to the Dell download center and get them there.

IF YOU HAVE ANY OF THE OF THESE UNITS ON CLEARANCE, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.  You originally quoted me one of these units at $814 on the 11th of July. You also said that you had some leeway in being able to lower that price.. I'm ready to buy one today if you could lower the quote to $775 inclusive of Tax.

Hi,
What cable do I need to connect my old E228WFP Dell 22" monitor to my new XPS 8900 PC?  The monitor has 15 & 24 pin female connections and the PC has HDMI and DisplayPort connections connection.  And one 24 pin female connection for which I'm not sure the purpose.  Excuse my ignorance...
Thanks...

Hello,

Getting pretty close to deciding on a new Dell XPS 8900 desktop.

Seems like all the major brands have the same horror stories re service, returns, etc., and have more or less come to the conclusion it is pretty much the "luck of the draw" irrespective of which brand you get.
Agree ?

The Dell XPS 8900 seems to come in a few different flavors.

As I've mentioned, my family does no gaming.
Do a lot of photo and video work and viewing, YouTube viewing, internet surfing, etc.
Pretty much the Sr. Citizen kinda home stuff.

a. Would appreciate your opinion if it is worth an additional $ 100 to go from a:

6 th Gen Intel Core i5 - 6400 with 6M Cache

to a:
6 th Gen Intel Core i7 - 6700 with 8 M Cache

b. And, for the video Card: another $ 100 to go from a:

GT730 NVidia GeForce 2 GB DDR3

to a
GTX 745 NVidia GeForce 4 GB DDR3

Would I likely notice any differences for either upgrade ? If so, how ?

Thanks for opinions,
Bob

Just received a Dell XPS8900 i7 with the 27" 4k monitor. As soon as I plugged it in it started running. It immediately went to an amber flashing On/Off button. Tech support says it is probably a bad mobo. I also couldn't get the monitor to work. From what I can gather the DirectPort cable is DP on one end and mini-DP on the other. Is that correct? Can I use a full DP cable (not mini on the one end)?

A:Dell XPS 8900 dead on arrival. Question about DP cable.

Below is the back of an XPS 8900. Near the bottom is the discrete added video card 10/11/12. If your XPS 8900 came with a discrete added video card, you should connect the monitor to it, not the middle 6/7 onboard video ports. We can assist more if you can provide the specific discrete added video card model.

I realize that this is not a "Flight Simulator X" forum, but I have a hardware issue somewhere with my Dell 8900 and am trying to figure it out.
Flight Sim is an intense game resources wise, but mainly on the CPU, which in my case is 4.0 Ghz i7-6700 so no issue there, Ram is 16 GB and I just installed (thanks to help from this forum!) a new GTX 960 - all specs are more than enough for Flightsim.
So I am puzzled that in the simulation I am having problems where the "textures" that cover the simulated ground, aircraft, lights, etc. take forever to load - I'll be flying along and suddenly the game will start struggling to load textures in areas of add on scenery (Orbx Pacific Northwest etc.) - everything looks great but then things gradually get blurry, I lose the textures off parts of the plane etc.
I should have a GREAT PC for running FSX, but there is a bottleneck to texture loading somewhere.
I suspect maybe the hard drive - while flying that little blue light on the top of the PC (which I believe indicates the hard drive is working) is blinking almost non-stop - it may be that the hard drive isn't feeding the game it's textures quickly enough?
Also - in case it is a hard drive speed issue - what would be the easiest way to install a new, fast hard drive just for FSX?   Would the open PCI-E slot I spotted next to where I mounted my graphics card take a SSD drive?   If so, which ones would be of the "plug and play" variety?

Flight simulator X is a Vaccuum tube game from over 12 years ago.
You have to RE install DOTNET and Directx June 2010 as well as have a Better GPU.  OR you are using a GPU that is now Legacy Status as far as the drivers.
This game was optimized for windows XP and Directx 9.
You have to install Legacy Direct play and DX9 and DX10 drivers from the Directx June 2010 patch.

Before previous drivers will work in windows7 or 8 or 10 you have to enable legacy features like DOTNET 2.0 3.5  and Directshow.  You must then install DIRECTX JUNE 2010 DRIVERS by downloading the file and extracting into a folder and running DXSETUP.exe.

Bought an XPS 8900 from Best Buy May 2016. Used as stock config since then as a home CAD machine.
I think it came stock with a GeoForce 730, maybe ?
Had it hooked up to a single Dell monitor via the DVI cable.
I took an NVidia Quadro 2000 2GB video card from an older XPS 8700 that I had installed it in and had been running fine, plug and play, and removed the GeoForce 730 from my new XPS 8900 and installed the Quadro 2000 in the new 8900, expecting no problems.
The Quadro has DVI out and two (2) Displayport out. I tried the DVI, no luck. The tried the Displayport, still no luck. Monitor is asleep, does not respond.
I know this card is a little older, but I am not sure why it would not be supported on the 8900, when I just plug and played it on the 8700, no problem?????
is the NVidia Quadro 2000 not supported for some reason? why?
Is there any way I can make this work ont he XPS 8900?

Hello,

Really totally confused about this, and would be most appreciative for some help and suggestions on.

Have a new Dell XPS 8900 desktop PC.
Has Realtek integrated audio, apparently. (ALC3861 7.1)
I imagine it?s pretty much the same setup for all of their PC?s with Realtek integrated audio.

Presently use the Green output jack in the rear to feed a pair of Logitech Desktop Z-200 desktop speakers. Works just fine.

I would like to now add the following:

Have an output from a radio (Home Patrol scanner) that has a Line-Out
Jack. Would like to feed this into pc, and be able to select either the normal
pc audio (which now is outputted on the green jack) OR this new input.

a. What input jack on the pc should I use for the radio?s output (Line Out) ?
I?m thinking the BLUE one. Is this correct ?

I would want it to also, of course, be outputted on the green jack to the desktop speakers.

b. I looked all over of every pc screen I could think of, but could find no option
for selecting (switching) between the pc normal output, and this new extra
audio input.

Where and how do I do this selectio/switching, please ? Caveats in doing ?

Much thanks,
Bob

Hello and thank you very much --
Yesterday the cursor disappeared so I turned the pc off manually.  When I turned it back on after a few seconds all was OK.  Cursor disappeared again, so I tried the same thing, but the computer now won't turn back on at all.
The start button lights up amber then immediately goes out.  No sounds.  I have unplugged and plugged back in all the cords from wall, router, modem.  The lights on modem and router are all normal,  The laptop I am using as I type right now is hooked up to the same system, I'm not using the laptop wirelessly.  I have also unplugged the power and held down the start button for 10 seconds as was suggested on Dell's website.  But pc still won't respond.
The pc that won't turn on is a Dell 8900 which I bought 6 months ago and has worked perfectly up to now.  I use Windows10.
What should I do next?

I have a Dell XPS 8900 Special Edition that I purchased a couple months ago. I would like to upgrade the OEM GeForce GTX 745 that it came with to a EVGA GTX 960.I have the Dell XPS 8900 (i7-6700k processor), 32gb memory, 2tb HDD + 32gb m.2 SSD cache, Dell UP2516D monitor, and Windows 10 Pro. I will be adding a second Dell UP2516D monitor soon and later will add an SSD and move the OS and applications to that.
My needs aren't gaming. Primarily I do business applications (MS-Office, including Access and Project), finance and investing, and a lot of photo and video editing.  The photo editing software will use the GPU if I upgrade.
EVGA suggested either of the following, based on what would fit:

#2 is 6.8" long, has 1 BIOS, 1 fan, and uses 128 watts for $160
I thought I would replace the graphics card myself, but once I opened the case, I wondered if either card will even fit.  I've seen that other people have swapped out their graphics card, so it must be possible.
When I look in my case, the existing graphics card is a single slot.  Both of these cards are dual slot.  Also, it looks like there are some transistors right next to the existing card.  When you install a dual slot card, ... Read more

I have a 1 month old Dell XPS 8900 and my Avira virus scan flagged Dell Foundation Services as a virus.  It came pre-installed with Windows 10 and Dell Foundation Services.
Specifically:
C:\Program Files\Dell\Dell Foundation Services\DCF.Branding.dll
[DETECTION] Contains suspicious code HEUR/APC (Cloud) [WARNING] The file could not be copied to quarantine! [WARNING] Error in ARK library [NOTE] The file is scheduled for deleting after reboot. [NOTE] It is recommended to restart your computer in order to finish the repair.
Has anyone else experienced this?  Shall I just let Avira delete this dll?  Will that break the application?  Should I uninstall Dell Foundation Services?  What does Dell Foundation Services do?  Is it needed?  Thanks

A:DCF.Branding.dll flagged as a virus (Dell Foundation Services) on new XPS 8900

It is probably safe. The HEUR/APC code you see is telling you that it found a process that triggered their heuristics engine. The heuristics engine scans running processes, and flags things that attempt to modify files on your computer.
See: http://www.shouldiremoveit.com/Dell-Foundation-Services-141858-program.aspx

I recently bought a Dell XPS 8900 desktop and Dell U2414H monitor. After hooking the two together with a Displayport to Displayport mini, everything seemed to be fine. There was a signal and the display was on. I turned off the monitor and put the computer in sleep mode for a little while. When I returned and turned both systems on, there was no picture. Just a statement saying the monitor was going into power saving mode. I tried unplugging and replugging the monitor back in and that didn't work. I got the same problem after connecting the computer to a different monitor so I suspect it's the desktop. I also get the same problem using the HDMI port instead. The only thing that seems to fix this is by doing a cold shut down and restart of the desktop. Can anyone tell me what the problem is under these circumstances?

What the PC-Doctor team has found here is that on a system with this many drives, when the tests are trying to load at the same time that we are loading CPU and memory stress testing, the load prevents the modules from getting loaded on all drives before hitting timeouts.
Hope this helps.

I have a friend with a Dell 2380. He said that all he can get is a black screen with writing on it. I tried to get him to bring it to me but all he brought me was the hard drive. He thought that the hard drive died. Well I have a little power supply and an adapter that can be used to connect it to a computer USB port. I am leary about connecting it to my computer because of course it it bootable and I am not sure what will happen. I did connect the power supply to it and it spins up fine. I feel pretty sure it is ok. He said that with the drive connected to power in his computer the fans slowed down. I know this is not a lot of information to work with but if you have any suggestion I would appreciate it.

I would suggest you ask him to bring the rest of the computer............If you were able to get into the bios on it you could see if the HD was being recognised. You can put it in your PC connected to a spare IDE cable, it wont do any harm and you should be able to see it power up - set the jumer on it as cable select for this.

On our Dell Dimension 4500, the only way to get USB flash drives to be recognized and work is to plug them in (anywhere), and restart the computer. When it loads, they usually show up in "my computer." I have gone into hardware and done what i know how but with no results. The devises work normally in the other XP we have. I hesitate to touch the registry because I know what havoc that can cause.

A:USB problem on Dell XP desk top

My first thought would be something is corrupt in Windows. If it were me, I would reinstall the OS.

With that said, you can try manually reinstalling SP3 and all updates. Then update/reinstall all of the system drivers. Then test and see what happens.

Most Dell desktop systems have a jumper on the mainboard that clears the password (power off, remove jumper, power on, power off and replace the jumper).   On just about every Dell made in the last 15+ years it's the only jumper on the mainboard -  if you need more information, we'll need to know what model system you have.

I purchased a Dell XPS 8900 Desktop recently with Windows 7 Professional OP System pre loaded. The first thing I did was to make a list of the list of all system components, the date and version of each. Next I went to Dell's Web Site, enter the computer tag number, and created a list of all Dell updates for this computer. Then I downloaded and installed all component updates except the BIOS update which was the same version however there was no date listed for it.
I have experienced hang ups and freezes from the beginning of using this computer and I continue to have the same freezes and hang ups. With the number of complaints of the same problem regardless of operating system you would think Dell Management and sales would recognize that there is a legitimate problem with this computer and assign their engineers to research the problem and issue either a recall or a fix to XPS 8900 users. I am a long time computer professional with over 45 years in the IT community. I have always trusted Dell and recommended their products to family and friends as well as contacts in the IT community and prospective buyers. Dell can either acknowledge the problem with this product and take appropriate corrective action or they can ignore the problem which will not go away but the buyers of Dell products will when the word gets out. I no longer feel comfortable buying or recommending Dell computers to or for anyone.

I'm an IT person as well.  I'm seriously thinking of shifting my loyalty to another brand like HP.  This is outrageous that they are basically ignoring the issue, ignoring my emails and basically saying 'oh well' in the phone calls.

Hello,
Thanks for helping me so many times in the past. I am a self taught networking guy who would be nowhere without this forum.
OK QUESTION:
We are running about 25 computers on a Dell 2003 Server: What are the max # of seats I can house on this server?
The whole company uses a remote application (Remote Desktop Connection) for data, payments etc...
The only thing they use on their local machines is Office, and surfing the net.
I USE THE SERVER FOR:
Basic Login
Slight Sharing of Files
Monitoring internet traffic (sex sites, facebook etc....)
Antivirus (using Trendmicro)
Static Ip Address
PRINTER ACCESS

HOW MANY MACHINES CAN I CONNECT ON THIS SERVER?
QUESTION #2:
AS we expand since it is so simple is there something easier than a Server/Desktop setup I can have?

A:Solved: What is the Maximum Computers on a 2003 Dell Server? Also alternative to desk

Your Microsoft licensing will determine how many seats you are permitted.
It sounds like you are using the server mainly for a DHCP server, Anti-virus server, file and print server and a few other simple tasks. As long as you've got adequate memory and drive space, you should be fine. If you start noticing slowdowns in file access or logins, you may need to look into something else. Also, if you host your own Exchange server or SQL, etc., you may need additional servers.

I've heard it is good to defragment your hard drive, especially for the flight simming that I use my machine for.
But my machine has a SSD for caching fed by a regular hard drive - and the normal defrag utility won't let you at this "hidden" traditional drive.
Is there a way to safely defrag my actual behind the scenes hard drive?
Thanks,
Steve

A:How do I "Defrag" my Hard Drive - Dell XPS 8900?

Don't worry about it. The cache SSD is small and used only to store files that Windows needs in a hurry or when memory (RAM) gets full.
Probably gets rewritten frequently, so unlikely to affect performance, even if it ever got fragmented.
If it ain't broke, don't break it!

While I'm waiting on my XPS 8900 to ship, I'd like to go ahead and order an SSD for it.
What is the length? From looking at the manual it looks like a 42MM, but I don't see that listed in the specs. Also, is it SATA or PCIe?

Here is the recipe that will make your computer one of the fastest in the world (as of today). It works for me, it is fast and stable:-
You need:
1. Dell XPS 8900.
2. Samsung SSD 950 Pro 512GB.
3. Asus Hyper M.2 X4 PCI-E Mini Adapter Card.
3. PCI Slot Case Cooler (optional but recommended).
What I did:-
1. Downloaded the latest Windows 10 from the Microsoft website and build an installation USB-stick, configured for UEFI.
2. Disconnected the Hard Drive that come with the computer.
3. Entered the BIOS system and removed the RAID-configuration between the factory HDD and the on-board 32GB SSD.
4. Installed the Samsung 950 Pro into the Ausus Hyper PCI-e Card.
5. Installed the Asus Hper Card into the PCI-e 4 slot (not the long one on at the end PCI-e x16 but the one closer to the Graphics Card). This will make the Samsung 950 Pro to work on 4 channels with maximum speed as per manufacturers specification.
6. Installed the cooling fan next to the Asus Card (on the op of the PCI-e x16 slot). This is to extract the extra heat when the Samsung 950 works hard - e.g. graphics, games, calculations.
7. In UEFI mode booted to Windows 10 from the USB-Stick.
8. Installed Windows 10 as usual. Don't need any drivers, Windows 10 will recognize all hardware listed here. You will not be prompted for a serial number from Microsoft. The installation will create 4 partitions on you new Samsung 950 Pro for UEFI purposes.
9. Updated Windows security, driver, Dell drivers from the Dell ... Read more

I got my xps 8900 and immediately installed a Samsung ssd as the boot drive. I want to add a WD 6tb as the internal backup drive but I'm unable to see it in Windows/Disk Management. It shows up in the bios settings but not viewable in Windows 10.  Any ideas? I've tried multiple different boot options through bios but nothing seems to work. I was able to add a SATA external housing and the system saw it through USB external connection so I don't think anything is wrong with the HD.

Hi, what FireWire PCI card does the XPS 8900 use? I have orderd 2 directly from Dell's compatible list and neither one fits. The card is too big... I have been on the phone with customer service being bounced around for hours. No one there seems to know what to do. It's beyond frustrating. Any help would be great.

A:XPS 8900 and FireWire pci

The XPS 8900 does not have a PCI slot. It has PCIe slots.
Blue PCIe x16 card slot (Video Card)Black PCIe x4 card slot (Sound card)Black PCIe x16 card slot (Not for a video card. A video card would cover the three sata connectors)
If you bought this, it will not work. That is PCI, not PCIe.

You need something like this that will fit into the middle Black PCIe x4 card slot.

I just got a new XPS 8900 today but when I start it up it won't boot Windows 10.   It says "No bootable devices found".
I started it again, pressed F2 and brought up the settings screen.  The only option under Boot Sequence is "UEFI: HL-DT-ST DVDRW/BDROM CH30N".   But if I go to System Configuration-Drives it shows the 2000 GB HDD (ST2000DM001) as Sata-0, the BD-Combo as Sata-1 and the 256GB HDD (Samsung SSD PM851) as Sata-5.
If I reboot with "Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit" CD in the PC and press a key when prompted, it asks me for Language and then gives me choices for Troubleshoot or Turn off your PC.
In Troubleshoot, I tried Reset this PC and Recover from a drive but they all fail.  I can provide the text here if need be.  If I go into Advanced Options, System Restore and System Image Recovery boot fail as well.  I can only choose Command Prompt.
The Command Prompt takes me to X:\windows\system32>.   The only other drive I can find now is H: which has directories for boot, efi and sources.   There was a C: drive earlier but it was empty.  I looked around the internet and tried using DISKPART to clean C: and I think I made this all worse as C: no longer shows
Anyone have any suggestions how to proceed?

A:New XPS 8900 won't boot

You shouldn't have to be doing anything to get a brand new PC to work.
I expect mine to work out of the box.
So I would return for full refund.

Greetings. I just setup my new XPS 8900 with Windows 10. Nothing looks familiar to me, compared to my  old WinXP or Vista. Also, there was no software provided, which I assume is normal now. My primary question is, what is being installed by Dell, in the setup process and does anyone have an approx. idea as to the data required for their install? I'm on a limited data plan and can only allow just so much to come in at a time. I did let the computer and Dell do their thing for a while and Network status showed more than 100 MBs had already come in. That's not a lot for someone on unlimited internet but I don't know how much more there is to go. Also, while this is going on, I have found no way to observe or be informed of what is being installed. There may be a bunch of stuff I'll just uninstall later. If anyone can shed some light, I sure would appreciate it. I can't find info. on this anywhere on Dell's site. Thanks, Roy

Hi buck.....
1. Make sure you have all the latest windows updates by going to Settings and then Update And Security
2. You can view Dell programs and drivers in "Programs And Features" and Device Manager:
a) Right click the Start's button at the left bottom of the page (Or press the windows key and X key at the same time). You'll see Programs And Features and Device Manager.
Please click on the link below, hopefully it helps you get started.

I've recently purchased a new XPS 8900 desktop, along with the "upgraded" NVidia GTX 745.
I was disappointed to find out that this GPU only has an HDMI output, which means I can only get 30hz on my 4k monitor.
Given the fact that 4k monitors become the new standard, I believe such spec should be mentioned. Had I knew this ahead, I would have got the regular on-board video card version and then buy the GPU separately.
And a question - I'll probably buy an MSI GTX 950 card. Is it compatible with the XPS 8900 desktop?

Thanks

A:XPS 8900 & 4k support

The Display port on the XPS8900 is for the Intel graphics built into the CPU, and not the NVIDIA based card.  The GT730 is a mid ranged GPU.  There are other cards you can buy which support display port, that can drive a 4k display.

I just ordered a new XPS 8900 desktop. Got a couple of questions, please.
I notice a few reviews about the 8900 "Special Edition" desktop. Are there many hardware differences between the S.E. and the non-S.E. desktops. For example, are the motherboards the same?
Where can I find a spec-sheet for the 8900 motherboard? I'm interested in the number of slots available, and if any are open for future expansion.
Thanks!

I have a brand new, just out of the box XPS 8900.  The odd thing is, the headset microphone only works when the Sound options window is open.  Close that window, and the headset/mic stops working.  If it's open it works perfectly.  Since I use the headset/mic for work, I'd love to know what's causing this.  It's strange, to say the least,
EDIT:  This machine is running Windows 7 (yes I know, it came that way).

I noticed that there are 2 PCIE slots on the motherboard of the XPS 8900. Would it be possible to run 2 GPU's by putting a second GPU in the slot? I know AMD has Bridgeless Crossfire but would that work? I was debating getting the R9 370 and then just adding another R9 370 down the road...

As for Power, I was going to upgrade to a 750w PSU as well when I added the second GPU.

A:XPS 8900 - Dual GPU - Is it possible?

CorrosiveWould it be possible to run 2 GPU's by putting a second GPU in the slot?
Short answer: No
The second PCIe x16 slot is only wired as x4. So an x16 card will fit in that slot, but it won't get enough lanes for video, even assuming BIOS could recognize 2 video cards...

Can't really find an exact answer for whether the machine can be upgraded to 64GB of RAM, I currently have 32GB but it's not enough.
Crucial sell Crucial 32GB Kit (16GBx2) DDR4-2133 UDIMM, I realise I would need two of these sets.

Thanks for your help.

A:XPS 8900 64GB of RAM

Explain why you need more than 32 GB. Crucial will tell you the max amount of ram.It says 32 is the max.--

Maximum memory: 32768MB
Slots:4 (2 banks of 2)

*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.

I am considering purchasing an XPS 8910 but I have concerns about heat issues and noise levels with the new case design based on some posts in this forum. I see that Best Buy is still selling the older XPS 8900 with the older case. If I go with the XPS 8910 I would probably use the stock NVIDIA GTX 745Ti or 960 video. I would add a 512G SSD for my primary hard drive.
Does anyone have any recommendations on the XPS 8910 vs. 8900?

A:XPS 8910 vs XPS 8900

Never heard of 745 ti and I don't think it exists.  The default card in the BestBuy systems is an X8 GT720
The 8900's with SSD and 960 are over priced imho.  I purchased my 8900 based on the cheapest price and then added a better power supply, video card, and M2 SSD being a SAMSUNG 950.

I have done much reading on this and other forums. I am afraid I am left with more questions than answers, I would like to install SSD in my m.2 slot. I understand that it is only a 1 lane slot. I understand that I can install a NVMe in a PCIe adapter card and get some whiz-bang performance. At this point, I do not want to spend the extra $ for the NVMe Samsung 950 pro but I would like to use the M.2 slot. So what can I put in there?
I see many reports of the Samsung 850 EVO SSD being successfully used, but many of these reports do not specify what form factor is used. Then there is the guy who said you can't use B slotted sticks in the M slotted socket. The Samsung 850 EVO M.2 SSD has an M and B slot. Many say they did successfully. So here I am scratching my head still wondering what to buy that will work in my M.2 socket. I plan to use this SSD as a boot drive and will have data stored on a spinner. I will make my questions very specific:
Has anyone successfully installed the Samsung 850 EVO - 500GB - M.2 SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-N5E500BW) in their XPS 8900 M.2 socket?
What other types of M.2 boards have others successfully installed and used?

I recently bought ax XPS 8900 desktop that came with 2 x 8 GB RAM sticks.  I would like to add 16 GB more but the Dell.ca site only offers 16 GB sticks for the 8900.  I assume that one has to add 2x8's to fill the four slots and not mix different size sticks.  If correct, how can I get  2x8's from Dell?

A:Adding RAM to XPS 8900

It looks like the same here on the US website.  I would go to crucial or newegg and see if you can find chips in the 2x8 range you are looking for.  Crucial is really good at getting you memory that works with your system.

This has been an issue since I got this machine last December.  After trying to solve it when I first started using the desktop, I've been ignoring it since.  I suspect that all the on/off/on activity just costed me an external hard drive, so it's time to try and solve this again, before more damage is done.
About 2/3rds of the time when I hit the power button to start up the system, nothing much happens.  There is some power to the CPU but not so much that the operating system begins to activate.  My monitor stays asleep, and I don't see the DELL emblem. What I've been doing is quickly hitting the power button again, which turns everything off pronto, then hitting the power button a third time.  At this point everything always powers up properly, Windows 10 lauches, etc., and I am "back in business."
Nothing setting-wise in power options, nor unplugging peripherals, seems to affect this issue.  I recall a few quick-fix options e.g. holding down the power button after unplugging the machine that also don't solve this apparently-chronic issue.
I'd love to solve this!  Thanks.

Power off, unplug
Press/hold power button for ~15 sec
Open case and remove motherboard battery
Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
Reinstall battery
Close case

That will reset BIOS to factory defaults, but the default settings may not be best for your specific system and needs...
