Hey
My company is updating our windows, servers, desktops nearly every thing. we were asked to back up all our data on external drives, but we were forced to encrypt the drives with Bit locker, after the immigration to the new hardware and windows 10, I opened
my external HDD and USB Drive using the passwords I set earlier, and as I don't need the drives to be encrypted anymore, I right clicked the drives then choose "Remove password" which I thought it will decrypt the drives and no passwords will be
required anymore. I was surprised to find that my drives are still encrypted, and all what happened is that the password unlock option for my Bit locker encrypted drives was removed. it now only displays to option to unlock (another USB drive or recovery key)
and I don't have both. all what i have is the passwords that I set to the drivers, but the unlock with password option vanished.
can i return that option back so i can unlock both my drives using password? can you please advice?
thanks in advance.

I have a Precision M4400 and somehow the BIOS admin password is locked and I cannot access the BIOS settings anymore.I called Dell Support twice, spent a lot a time waiting on the phone, also waited weeks for a resolution to my request, and finally they won't provide a password even if I am willing to pay the fee for that.
Does anyone know an alternative solution?
Thanks.

A:Dell Tech Support won't provide BIOS unlock password for Precision M4400

If you can't verify your ownership of the machine, they won't  unlock it -- if that's the case, you have just one option:  replace the mainboard.  If you do that, be ABSOLUTELY sure the seller guarantees there's no password on the replacement you buy.

Hi there guys - any help will be much appreciated

I had a bit of a problem with Malware which led me to reinstall windows 8. I had also at the time been trying to install Linux to dual boot beside it. However, upon reinstalling I got the annoying watermark saying "Secureboot isn't configured correctly."
Having decided I would rather remove the watermark and having gone back into the BIOS (with a reinstall) and trying to enable secure boot I get a message - "CSM is Loaded! Disable the CSM via Setup and repeat operation after Restart".
However there is, as far a I can see no option to disable the CSM in my bios - I've tried disabling anything related to Legacy and reinstalling both Ubuntu and Windows 8 as well as wiping the drive and jumping the CMOS as well as updating the BIOS.

Am very much at a loss and feel I've tried every permutation in the BIOS. Could possibly be an incompatibility with graphics card, but wouldn't know where to start on that end if it is.

Many thanks for your time!

I have been attempting to Enable Legacy boot and Disable Secure boot on this machine for a few days now.  My current BIOS version is N01 2.15.  It is the oddest thing.  I am able to make some changes, save and have them succesfully change...but I cannot get legacy to enable and save.  Steps I have taken: - Cleared Secure Boot Keys - Reset- Selected Legacy Support Enable and Secure Boot Disable - Reset- Go back to BIOS --> Boot Options -->Attempt to Uncheck UEFI Boot Order (Unable to) --> Check to see if Legacy Boot is available and its a no go- Then I go back to the secure boot options and verify that none of my changes saved.  I am attempting to get these machines to PXE boot to grab our company's image, but I need Legacy boot enabled to do it.  After several attempts to get Legacy to enable I resolved to just try to PXE boot BUT can't do that as well as it says the "selected boot image did not authenticate."  Of course the fix I found for this was enable Legacy Boot....which I can't do. I tried a different method and still no different results. - Updated BIOS to V 02.15- reset back to factory settings in the main menu- back into bios, set password --->reboot- back into bios disabled bootable devices usb and cd rom - went to secure boot options and selected in the drop down "enable legacy and disable UEFI boot" -->reboot- back to bios to the check box next to legacy in the boot options menu ... I am trying to install Windows 7 from a DVD to an HP 19-2113w All-in-One with Windows 8.1 as the factory install. I have entered the BIOS, turned off Secure Boot, restarted, and entered the code to confirm that I want to disable Secure Boot. Upon restarting and going back into the BIOS, Secure Boot shows it is "Disabled." HOWEVER -- when I then go into the boot options and try to enable the legacy boot devices, it gives me a message saying "You must disable Secure Boot before you may configure this option." As I previously stated -- Secure Boot shows "Disabled" when I check under the security tab.  How much more disabled can it get?  Am I missing something here?  Is there any other way to install Windows 7 from a DVD onto this computer?

I built a computer back in 2009 with an Intel DP55KG motherboard running Windows 7. So, I am getting for a fresh Windows 10 install and I noticed that back in 2009 I never enabled the UEFI boot mode. Would it be recommended to enable it this time before the Win 10 install, or will it bring about some issues?

Here is the definition of the setting according to the motherboard manual:

UEFI boot
OPTIONS: ? Enable ? Disable
Enables or disables Unified Extended Firmware Interface (UEFI) Boot. UEFI Boot must be enabled in order to boot to a drive larger than 2 TB (terabytes). Enable: BIOS will attempt to boot via UEFI before using the legacy boot sequence. Disable: BIOS will use the legacy boot sequence.

Hi,
I have a legacy intel pc thats chugging along pretty well. I currently dont have the option to boot from USB. However it seems a later version of the bios solves the problem but I wanted advice before I do anything and also pointers on how to update, if thats the way to go.
Motherboard: Intel D815EEA
BIOS:EA81510A.86A.0031.P07

I downloaded a document from intel which seems to suggest version EA81510A.86A.0051.P11.0051
and above have USB boot enabled from the BIOS.

Should I upgrade and how do i do it?

TIA,
raj

A:Solved: Intel PC Bios upgrade to enable usb boot?

If it's an OEM (brand name) PC, you should only use BIOS updates supplied by that manufacturer (via their website), as those direct from Intel may not be the right one for that board, so you could end up with a non-working PC and no easy way to fix it.

Hi,

I have a Microsoft Surface Pro 2 and I am running Windows 8.1 Pro Update 1.

I have been unsuccessful at building a WinPE image that provides BitLocker support. I searched around the internet and found many posts. Eventually, I ended up trying to build it with the various added packages I discovered in the various posts. However, in the end, none worked and this is the message I am getting after booting into my WinPE environment:

manage-bde.exe - Application Error

The instruction at 0xa20afa3b referenced memory at 0x0000013d.
The memory could not be read.

Click on OK to terminate the program

Here are the commands I eventually ended up using to build my WinPE image:

Code:

A:How to enable BitLocker support (unlock drive) in WinPE 5?

I resolved the issue, but here's how I got to it:

1) I even tried using the 8.0 ADK, but I still got the same error.

2) At one point during my troubleshooting, I stopped just prior to performing the Commit to create the WinPE image. Then I navigated to the <mount directory>\Windows\System32 and ran manage-bde.exe. The result: A Windows error (something to the effect that the program crashed/stopped working).

3) I tried running Notepad.exe and it worked fine.

4) I compared the manage-bde.exe from my mount directory to the one in C:\Windows\System32 using the comp utility and they were identical.

5) I have always been able to run C:\Windows\System32\manage-bde.exe. So I created a "temp" subdirectory in my mount directory and copied C:\Windows\System32\manage-bde.exe. When I tried to run it, I got that error (program crashed/stopped working).

6) Running it from the C:\Windows\System32 directory, however, worked without any issue. This led me to conclude that it required some dependent files in C:\Windows\System32.

7) After a bit more troubleshooting, I discovered that in order for it to run, it needed something in directory C:\Windows\System32\en-US\. I copied that folder I into my "temp" folder on my mount directory and then manage-bde.exe was able to run without any issues.

8) Final solution was to create a subdirectory called "BitLocker" in <mount directory>\Windows\System32, then copy C:\Windows\System32\manage-bde.exe... Read more

Today, in my Optiplex 780 Desktop with Win 7 Pro 64-bit and 8GB RAM, I cloned my hard drive from old drive to new drive.  To do that, I went into BIOS (which is the A14 version), went to Drives, enabled SATA2, and plugged the new empty hard drive into the SATA2 socket on the motherboard.  The original drive has always been in the SATA0 socket, and the CD-DVD has always been in the SATA1 socket.
The clone went well (using Macrium Reflect Free in a USB stick).  When I took out the old drive and connected the new cloned drive to the original SATA0 socket, the Optiplex gave me errors on the reboot.  It said it was missing a drive in SATA2 and did i want to Continue, go into System or run Diagnostics.  After a few reboots with that error, I went back into BIOS - Drives and disabled SATA2.  Then reboot went very well without errors, a few times.  All good.
However, those errors aren't right.  I should be able to enable SATA2 in BIOS and not get errors just because no actual drive is plugged into the SATA2 socket on the motherboard.  (That's how it works in a different Dell Optiplex 3010 I have).
So what's going on?  Why am I getting this error?
Thanks.

I have a client's machine on which one of his darling little brats has created or reset the BIOS password and now denies all knowledge of the thing. I seem to recall there is either a means of generating the default password from the Service Tag or, failing that, shorting out one of the motherboard chips. That I have done before but would prefer to know which chip it is.
The system is a Dell Dimension 3100.
Anyone able to help before I condemn the thing to perdition and a drop kick into the neighbours wheelie bin?

A:Missing Dell BIOS (boot) password

Difficult task.
What you describe will not happen. But you can check with Dell support to see if the computer is registered to that owner. Then Dell will send someone out as an authorized service rep with a little disk that runs the fix... and has a cost.
I would first see if the hard drive can be accessed while installed in an external USB enclosure.
If it can, then even if passworded, you can put in a replacement drive. And Dell XP install disk will work.
Then you can buy a Dell motherboard on eBay. Many Optiplex boards are cheaper, and work better than the Dimension boards... for a cheaper price... around $70 to $85.... or refurbished Dell government computers are for sale at PCSurplusonline for $120 to $180 with shipping... just move the board into the 3100. And the dell OS will work.

Hello,

I have two questions here for two different PCs.

1. Is there a way to bypass/change/remeove a BIOS password on a computer without knoowing the current one? We have an older computer that has a BIOS otected password. I need to get into the BIOS and make changes, but I can't becasue it asks for a password.

2. We have another older machine that was setup in a way I am not familiar. When I power it on, I get 3 options
- WindowsXP Professional
- Boot Mirror C: - secondary plex
- Boot Mirror C: - secondary plex

What are those 2 other options and can I remove them and set the computer up so it just automatically boots to the OS. I reformattd the hard drive and it didn't change anything,

Thank you in advance for all your help.

Hi Avvy.

I would like to see the solution to this. I have run accross a similar situation. Here is the story.

Brother-in-law 1 got a new Dell computer for Xmas. Good for him. He gave his old Pentium III machine (Win2K pro) to Brother-in-law 2. B-I-L 2 tried to set himself up a user name and password, but he must have done something wrong.

Now, whenever he boots, he gets the logon screen with 'administrator' in the user name field. Trying to log on with no password does not work. Trying to log on with the name and password he tried to set up for himself does not work. We can not get past the log on screen.

It appears to me that my situation is analagous to Wildaboutu's, but I have no repair-tech guy to blame.

You say there is a solution. Please share it with us.

Thanks. ...Schnitzu

I think my BIOS was factory locked, because a lot of options on it are greyed out. How can I unlock that to adjust some settings.

I have an Insyde BIOS 1.40

Ignore it for a laptop - they are factory limited, probably even if you build your own laptop.

Hello,

l can't use my laptop anymore, Toshiba P50-A-12Z, Intel Core i7 Haswell, 2013, since 6months, in the beginning of august.

At that time, l created a Blos password to prevent people from accessing my Computer. On boot, after type my pwd and hit "return" the display become blank and unresponsive and the computer is turned off after one minute.

I called Toshiba support which advised me to press and hold 20 sec. a button on the motherboard, turned the Computer on when it's plugged, but Blosis not reinitialized. Password still asked, still not booting.

l was used to resetting 90s desktop pcs with their Jumpers and round batteries but l can't find something similar here. The round battery is un accessible, it is protected inside a little black bag. Some Forums on the Internet talk about resetting Toshiba Satellites but their solutions date back to the 2000s. There is Nothing for a 2013 P50.

Their advice is somehow difficult:short circuit a pin or jumper while turning on. JP8 Or JRST 2001, 2002 or 2501. undert he RAM or eIsewhere. But l don't know how to short-circuit a place on the motherboard.

I can Find those JRST on the accessible side of my motherboard, but there is no visible corresponding pin or Jumper, please See My attached photos.

I just purchased this touchsmart envy laptop yesterday as my old one crashed & I can not remember the password I set to unlock the computer.

A:Computer unlock password

Hi, If you normally sign-on with an email and password, see if you can reset the password via another PC from the Microsoft page on the following link.  https://account.live.com/password/reset Otherwise, there is a general policy on the Forum not to provide methods to bypass Windows log-on passwords, however a local computer shop would be able to do this for you. Another option, if all your personal data etc is backed-up ( or you have nothing you need to save ), would be to reset the notebook to its 'Factory Condition' and then set it up from the beginning ? if you don?t have your Recovery Media, the notebook will have shipped with a Recovery Partition which can be accessed at boot - ie shutdown the notebook, then start tapping away at f11 as soon as you power on. A full guide on this can be found on the following link. http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00006110#!&AbT1%3Fjumpid=hpr_r1002_usen_link1 Regards, DP-K

Hello, I am buying an HP laptop at a liquidation auction, but it is password protected.  Is there a way to break into it? Thank you

A:Unlock a password protected PC

If it is simply the Windows logon password that is easily fixed. If it is a power on (BIOS) password that requires the password before the notebook will even boot up-that is not so easy. Depending on whether it is a business class(Elite,Probook, etc) or consumer class(Pavilion, etc) will determine that. A business class normally requires service from HP,with proper ownership certification. Many of the consumer class can be cleared, but not sure all. What model are you looking at?

A:Unlock cpu settings in bios

You can't make any changes to the chipset or CPU clock through the locked HP BIOS. Newer model Intel CPUs can be overclocked by use of an Intel utility. It is, AFAIK not available for older generation CPUs. What may be possible, if you accept the risks, is to go to one of the many BIOS mod websites to see what they have available. https://www.google.nl/search?q=BIOS+mods&oq=BIOS+mods&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l5.3512j1j4&sourceid=chrome...

Please help my boss. She was out of the office Friday, locked her files in a psd file folder on her desktop (windows xp) and has forgotten the exact password. She thinks it is one thing, we have tried every variation of that, but fear now it is not that and any possibility of deciphering now may be lost. We were on the phone with the company's IT dept yesterday and they do not seem to have the ability to do it remotely, restore her email with the files from as far back as a year ago, nor send someone to sit and crack it. Any suggestions on any steps we could take to solve this issue. They were important files, otherwise they wouldn't have been locked or given this much effort to unlock. We looked at Cain and Abel, as well as Brute Force, but cannot give the computer up for that amount of time for the program to crack the code. Thank you kindly for any help.

The harddisk / fan / graphics card etc is working - but i don't see anything nor do i get some kind of prompt or shell or whatsoever.

I tried all those "Press, ESC, Press F2, Press F1, Press INS" stuff, nothing worked out.
I removed the battery for several mins while pressing the power button, nothing.

Maybe somebody has some kind of clue whats wrong with this maschine....

A:Portege R830-1EE: Supervisor / Bios password - No Boot or login prompt

Hi

Did you use some high ASCII character like ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ? etc in your BIOS / Supervisor password?

In the past the usage of such characters prevented the notebook from booting up.
In such case you had to contact the service partner in order to solve this problem.

A:Unlock Advanced Menu in Bios

No, that is NOT the fastest computer to game on.  Here is a little primer ... E series devices are 'Entry level' products, designed for the casual user who wants to do the basics at a reasonable price.  These models are not targeted at heavy users like gamers, photo editors, video makers, etc.  For big time gaming power, take a look at the Predator line.  Now THAT is a gaming platform!

Hello,
I am having problems with direct booting into Windows 8 installed into a VHDX file.
This is a four-partition UEFI boot on a GPT drive. EFI files are residing on a second partition of disk 0 (the ESP partition) in the EFI folder. The boot virtual disk is residing on the fourth partition of that disk 0.
When I turn on the PC, it shows black screen after the BIOS POST screen. No Windows 8 boot menu, no other information is displayed. However, if I press Shift+F12 (or F12) to start Dell BIOS Boot Menu and choose Windows Boot Manager from the UEFI part of
the boot menu, Windows 8 starts to boot without difficulties.
How do I make Windows to boot automatically without having to select Windows Boot Manager in DELL BIOS boot menu?
I believe I messed up with boot sector somehow... What needs to be fixed provided that Windows 8 will boot into VHDX file?
Thank you.

Hi there.
Yesterday i wrote personal message to the man answering people in first seen page on Google, but still have no message from him. I talk about Dell support. Kiran K.
Does he still work in Dell or i have to contact another person?
I know my Service Tag and can tell it to someone who will tell me how to unlock the HDD.
Greetings

A:Password protected hard disk. How to unlock it?

This is a two-dimensional issue - there's the system (BIOS) portion of the password.  To have that cleared, you'll need to call Dell support with verification of ownership.
This will not, however remove the password from the drive.  The cheapest solution is that once the CMOS portion is clear, to replace the drive with a new one.
If you need to have the password removed from the drive to access the data on it, you'll need to send the drive to a recovery service with the tools to do that job -- it will cost more than a replacement drive by at least a factor of about four, so if you don't need the data, simply replace the drive.

My wife's company recently moved to Windows 7 Professional. One issue that I'm currently having is that when her laptop is locked, we cannot unlock it. I assume this is because it is at home and not attached to the domain. However, it was not attached to the domain when we logged into it, was never on the domain while it was logged into, and was not on the domain when it locked. We type the correct password in, but it keeps saying "the user name or password is incorrect". There is no red button in the bottom right corner to allow for restarting the computer or shutting it down when it is locked. The only way to restart the machine is to hold down the power button and force it off, then it wants to check the disks when it comes back on. After forcefully restarting it, we are able to log on using the password even though we are not connected to the domain. It works OK if she logs off when she's through using it (logon works, unlocking doesn't), but if she locks it, hibernates, puts it into standby, or leaves it unattended too long, we're up the creek. The only options on the lock screen are EASE OF ACCESS and OTHER CREDENTIALS. Clicking OTHER CREDENTIALS shows her locked account and INSERT A SMART CARD. Why will it not unlock with the correct password, but it will accept the password for the initial login? Setting it to not require a password when it wakes up probably isn't feasible in her workplace. TIA

A:Win 7 Will Not Unlock With Correct Password When Not Connected To Domain

Sounds like this policy is enabled:
Interactive logon: Require Domain Controller authentication to unlock workstation.

This can be disabled, it will still require a password, but will allow it to use cached credentials, same as logging in after rebooting.

Click Start, type secpol.msc, press Enter
Navigate to Security Settings | Local Policies | Security Options
See if you can change that policy to disabled. If this is set by a Domain Group Policy, then that policy will need to be changed by the company. They may need to create a separate OU for people who take PCs home to do work, then they can still keep that policy for computers in the office.

Also sounds like this policy is disabled, which would explain why the shutdown option isn't present from the Lock screen:
Shutdown: Allow system to be shut down without having to log on

After A+F10

I have tried to do the same procedure both before starting the bios, both inside the bios, but it did not work.

Can you help?Thank you very much.

A:Unlock the advanced functions of the Bios InsydeH20 Rev 3.5 ...

Since we don't know what system the other person had we can't help you. And a bios by the same manufactures doesn't mean their options is the same as your option based on your system. So don't think what happens on another bios is the same as yours. And since we have no specs or P/N from theirs to verify what biso version they have know one can know for sure. And maybe their bios upgrades gives them that options but for you system that isn't available. So before trying to tie two different bios from different system is like comparing Apples to Oranges.

Hey all, is there a hotkey or some key combination to unlock the greyed out bios settings in Lenovo UEFI bios (k450e)? Thanks

Mod's Edit: Additional information added to Subject line for clarity of issue.

A:K450e - Bios unlock for additional options?

Hi Lenovo000 ,

Greetings.

Default users may not have access to certain option of the BIOS and would require a supervisor /administrator password and access to allow .

Be careful not to lose the password since there is no reset to it if you forget it.
Security tab would allow you create a supervidor password.

Update us how it goes.

Regards

Here is the deal: I have a server at a small business running XP Pro sp3. Whenever a workstation logs into the business system that is hosted on the server, the program prompts for a username & password. This username & password are the same as one of the user accounts on the server, so if someone mis-types the password one too many times, the server locks the account for multiple password fails.

Is there a way I can either unlock the account remotely (Logging in with an admin account on the server bogs it down enormously, as it actually serves 6 different programs and tends to run at about 65% cpu usage with nothing else really going on), or set a policy that makes it to where the account will never lock for excess password attempts?

I apologize if this has been addressed somewhere before, but I was a little daunted by the thought of digging through over a thousand pages of threads to find out.

TIA,
Dannan

A:Remotely unlock a users account after 3 password fails

First why are you using xp pro as a server? and To answer your question.. the easiest way I can think of is to setup a separate box on the network for the specific purpose of remoting in. Once on the network you can use the Computer Management console to remote connect to the machine in question and unlock the user. That way you never have to actually login to the "server" but you will need to do it from an admin account local to both computers.

Hi,
Correct bitlocker password & RecoveryKey Can't unlock my drive
I have 2 hard drive in my computer, 1st one runs OS, 2nd one using bitlocker to encrypt and works fine until........... I re-installed the OS on the 1st Drive (didn't touch 2nd drive at all, the only thing is that during the installation, I manually turned
off the power once due to the computer locks up.)
Now when I try to open my 2nd hard drive typing bitlocker password, always says: wrong password.
Then I was trying to use the Recovery Key to unlock, but always say:  the key does not match the drive. -- I am pertty sure this key is for this drive.
Is there anything else I can try? Or any more information needed to help me get my data back?
Thanks

When starting win7 desktop get blank screen backgroung with a Enter Password box and an Unlock button. Can't get by and can't do anything, no safe mode, nothing.

A:win7 Pro boots with "Enter password" and unlock button

Are you able to boot a usb or dvd in order to get into BIOS?  Reason for asking:  I don't remember Windows 7 doing a "blank screen background" -- I'm wondering if the problem is higher up the food chain.

It's the strangest thing. I have just gone through a complete Hard Drive wipe and then installed XP Pro (used to be Home Edition). I have installed all of my software and updated all of the drivers, all seems well.

Yet my excessively long and complex password (which uses upper and lowercase characters), will not unlock the computer whenever I lock my account (press WinKey+L).

There is no chance that I am mispelling or mistyping my password because I obviously remember it clearly to be able to login in the first place. My first thought was that it was something to do with the keyboard layout setup in the control panel -> regional language options. I was right at first and set the correct configuration, all of the settings are English - United Kingdom, as I want them to be (i got uk keyboard layout). For example, if I hold down shift and then slide my finger across keys 1-0 I will get:
!"$%^&*()
I also clicked the setting saying the configuration is set across all accounts. So I am pretty darn sure there is nothing wrong to do with the language options.

As a temporary fix I changed my password so it doesn't use upper/lowercase combinations but only includes normal letters.

Please could somebody explain what's could be causing this wierd problem.

I have a DELL Inspiron 14R (N4110) laptop. Few days back I set BIOS password. Unexpectedly I forgot the password. While going to BIOS, my laptop is asking for password. I tried many times but unable to enter correct password. Can any one please tell me how to proceed further for resetting the password? Now there's unlock key hint number appearing.. please help so i can go to my bios settings..
Thanks in advance...

A:BIOS Lock. Unlock Key Hint Number appearing

I have the same exact problem with one of my Latitude D420 machines. The only catch is that I have followed the directions, but can not get the machine to read me external CD Drive or my thumb drive. I have been stuck as well. I would have hoped I could just dive into the machine reset the password in the CMOS and reboot. I forgot this is not an HP machine. Hope someone reads our troubles and has a good solution.
