My Internet Explorer on my laptop will open, but then immediately closes itself down.

It won't stay open, no matter what I do.

Tried to run the virus scan, which removed 2 problems, but that didn't work.

I wanted to update my Norton Antivirus to see if that would find and solve the issue but since the updates are web-based, and my I/E won't stay open, I can't do that either.

Any suggestions?

Hi All

I've got to the slitting wrists stage of this problem. I hope someone can help...

I've been getting the blue screen of death recently and upon checking my computer's error logs I found that it was a problem with my Radeon graphics card. I uninstalled and reinstalled the Radeon software but the audio went. I couldn't find the audio driver (long story) so I did a system restore which worked - everything was back to normal. Or so I thought.

Next morning I tried to open IE but upon opening it closed immediately. I've done a bit of research (ON THE INTERNET AT WORK!) and have done a HijackThis log.

It may be a coincidnece but the other day my screensaver changed - it's now a black screen which says Oxigenscr V5.00.0000. Maybe this is a virus. Thank you for your help in advance

I was able to remove them all except one, MyWebSearch. Other than my issue opening Internet Explorer, I am not experiencing I am using another computer to access this forum and post my log.

I have worked on a friends laptop
windows 7

internet explorer opens and shows the outline of the dialogue box and then the page closes

I have done the following

Trying to re-install - message , version already on PC

Rebooted at various stages throughout
- Went to Turn Windows Features On and Off and un-clicked Internet 9
- Installed updates - removed IE10 and IE11 updates

- Ran "Command" as admin - and tried this command

FORFILES /P %WINDIR%\servicing\Packages /M Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-*9.*.mum /c "cmd /c echo Uninstalling package @fname && start /w pkgmgr /up:@fname /norestart"

This failed with access denied

- After removing the updates , i was then allowed to install IE11 which took a while to fully install after the full installation and a reboot.
Exactly the same error occur

IE opens with just the outline of the PAGE and then timer shows for a while, then screen closes.

I have left my friend to create the recovery DVDs and then once created to do a system restore back to December. I just wanted to make sure that if there was a problem with restore, she had a recovery option.

She knows this problem has been on the pc for a while, and shes not sure if before or after the oldest restore point of 19/12/13

She has a full subscription to Norton 360 on the PC

Been having trouble with a Windows XP Service Pack 3 machine using the internet, specifically Internet Explorer. IE8 opens but then shuts down immediately with an error message saying that Internet Explorer must be shut down. Was getting this yesterday on repeated attempts. For some reason tonight IE actually opened, I then tried to install Firefox (which had been blown out of the machine somehow) and get the error "Your current security settings do not allow this to be downloaded."Machine is also running much slower than normal. AVG is up to date and hasn't found any viruses, although a tracking cookie alert popped up tonight and I clicked Move To Vault. Firewall is enabled. Not sure if there is anti-spyware running on this, other than AVG. In our office there is one site that we have to use Internet Explorer to access. This morning immediately upon start it crashed on two computers(I am unsure if they are related or not). So I have spent three hours trying to fix it and I am not stuck. It is IE 10 (or was) and it is Windows 7. Things I have tried:

1. Running with no addons.
2. Uninstalling then Reinstalling.
3. Doing an sfc scan to see if it was a missing system file.
4. Making sure all required and optional updates were installed.
5. One computer is used sparingly, there is nothing on it but the default programs but ran a virus scan anyway and it turned up nothing.
6. Reset all internet explorer settings.
7. Finally I installed the IE11 beta version and it does the exact same thing.

Having two different IE versions do the exact same thing makes me think it is a system issue and not an IE issue. Both Firefox and Chrome work with no issues.

Just wanted to add that it will start in safe mode with no problems

Just disabled DEP on IE

A:Internet Explorer immediately shuts down upon start

Maybe try running these tools: tool 1, tool 2.

If that doesnt help, I have a few more possible solutions. This is another one: Install IE 10 and make sure all Windows updates are installed (not just for IE, but for the OS).

If that doesnt work, tell me.

Hey Guys,

For the last month and a bit I've had a problem with my Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player. Neither of them are opening when I want them to.

I haven't really needed them up until now.. I need IE for a work project.

I tried doing a System Restore to before the problem started occouring - but that doesn't seem to be an option on this computer, Can anyone help?

I'm not too sure what version of WMP I was using, but I did try to upgrade me IE to the latest version, but that did not help.

I have been helping my Uncle with his computer, WINXP, sp3, Dell Dimension desktop. (IE7) I have had it for 3 weeks and am pretty good at cleaning out malware, I've cleaned at least 40+ computers, but not a true geek.

When I got his computer, it showed a couple of infections, which I got cleaned out, nothing shows up in Malwarebytes, Kapersky online or AVG. Also it was reporting a msvcrt.dll error when it shut down initally, but nothing now??

The problem is that when I click on internet explorer, it comes up, then shuts right back down, no errors. I also went to the control panel and the file folder for internet options is totally missing.

I have tried reregistering the files, and every other suggestion across the web and microsoft. I am considering rolling back to IE6, but it says that it will affect, MBAM and many other files if I roll back. (I see a folder for IE8, so am thinking he tried to update)

I am at a total loss I have spent at least 50 hours or more researching this.

Questions:

1. Should I restore it back to the day I got it from him with infections back and post logs in spyware forum?? (Internet option folder was gone then too)

2. Or should I roll back to IE6 and not worry about the warnings?

3. Should I do a complete restore, only problem, he didn't make his restore disks when he bought the computer, but I think I can still make them. (I also have a dell dimension WINXP SP1 restore disk from my mom's computer, or I have a regul... Read more

Hey, I am having problems with my other computer suddenly closing both Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer applications, such as Control Panel, My Computer, etc...(Windows XP Home Edition)
When i click on either one, lets say the my computer icon, a pop up of the my computer folder thing flashes for a split second then disappears, the computer freezes for about a second, shows only the desktop, then a few seconds later the icons start appearing on my desktop and my start taskbar comes back. The screen is back to normal with no lag, but the my computer pop up is no longer there. The same thing happens with internet explorer, but it just happens alot quicker.
Does anyone know what could possibly be the problem of this, and maybe how to fix it? Thank You in advance.

I am using ie7 and winxp on my computer and have recently had an issue with it. When I try to open explorer the window closes before it actually loads up. Bits of the taskbar keep turning grey as well like the old style windows.

I have tried removing all add ons and resetting internet settings but have had no luck. The connection is okay with other computers. On the problem computer the icons on the taskbar says it is there until I click on it when it disspears. I have tried downloading and running programmes like spybot on it (downloading them onto another disk and then transferring them onto the computer) but most seem to need to use the internet to run them. I cant use the web at all so solutions like installing ie6 dont seem possible either. I have ran hijack this here is the log. Any help would be most appreciated.

Hello there,

My roomates Dell Dimension 2400 laptop , XP Pro, SP3,
Dual core Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.40 Ghz
2.39 Ghz, 1.00 GB Ram

Is having trouble with Internet Explorer dissapearing immediately and Chrome won't come open and Firefox is slow in opening:(

Joyces brother did something that made her laptop only start in Safe mode.

Not sure all he did but he removed Malwarebytes and did microsoft update.

The Comodo Internet suite Firewall/antivirus is getting an error and won't run

I reinstalled Malwarebytes and ran it and it found a pesky virus I have dealt with alot before called 'My Web Search'. it infected 3 registry files. Whe I tried to run system restore it wouldnt work its earlies date to restor to was 2066!! lol.

Anyway I got it to start normally by runing MsConfig and puting a checkmark by "Start Normally and load all drivers etc." Instead of the "Selected start up option.

It started normally and was fine except for Internet explorer and chrome not working.

I un-installed in add and remove the listed Internet Explorer 7 and 8 in hopes that it would revert to a good copy of Internet explorer 6 like I have done before.

When I open Internet explorer it opens to a plain white window and just hangs there. In task manager it shows in the processes tab but not in the applications tab:( And when you minimize it on the taskbar it has the little "e" icon but does not say Internet explorer next to it on the taskbar:(

I am having Internet Explorer 10 problems after Ransom removal. I have ran Malwarebytes to get rid of the the ransom virus. I ran Spybot 2, adwcleaner and JRT to clean up some stuff. Unfortunately after doing all of the windows updates which includes IE10 Internet Explorer immediately crashes.

Hi everyone, New to the forum so thanks for the help ahead of time. Upon opening internet explorer it immediately closes and displays nothing. Also Internet options in control panel will not open at all. The windows firewall also tells me "For your security, some settings are controlled by group policy." This computer is not on a network and is a home computer. I was able to work around it by doing some registry work in which I removed the value on the firewall key. So that enabled me to turn the firewall back on. The service for windows firewall is now started with no errors and is set to automatic.

The Internet explorer problem is more important to me at the moment. I know the internet connection is active because firefox works perfectly. I scanned the computer with AVG and it found so many viruses and trojans it was rediculous. I also scanned the computer with webroot spysweeper and it found nothing but when I open IE it stops all sorts of things like drivecleaner for example.

Hello everyone, im fairly new to this, so please bear with me.

Recently, ive been having trouble with my computer. It started one morning when i went to go check my email. My main browser is google chrome exe so naturally i go to click it. Which is when all this starts -_-. i double click on it, but the program doesnt open. I try to open it by left clicking and running as an admin but still no luck. I soon realize that this is the case for ALL of my programs except Internet explorer, which i find strange considering the similarities with the other browsers. Anyway, ive read previous similar problems on here, and i download Hijackthis. I have a log folder that i can post if needed. Also i see something when i try to open the program quicky enough but i cant make out what it is before it closes. There is also a suspicious search engine called searchqu.com406 that comes up as soon as i start internet explorer Keep in mind this doesnt happen in safe mode, and evrything works fine, just like the computer was regularly before. Ive tried multiple Malwarebytes scans, stinger, (which is still scanning after 25 mins) and AVG (which begins to scan, but then a command prompt comes up and stops it) all to no avail. Any help would greatly be appreciated Please and Thank You

I am so puzzled with this problem I have. I have Windows xp: Service Pack 3, and when I open Windows Internet Explorer 8, It turns white and closes almost immediately after I open it, or i'll open it and it'll turn white and stay like that for almost 10 minutes straight and do nothing. I tried resetting it in control panel, and it didn't help at all. Why doesn't it----referring to my browser;Windows Internet Explorer, work?

If IE works properly when you start it without add-ons then it's possible that you could have an infection, but try these two MS fixits in this order first -

Fix Internet Explorer issues to make IE fast, safe and stable

Fix Internet Explorer add-on problems when IE hangs or freezes

I uninstalled the music link program, reinstalled AIM 6.8, uninstalled 6.8 and installed 6.9 beta and then gave up and started using 5.9 which does work. Any ideas to why 6.8 won't work? I even searched the registry and deleted everything that had to do with musiclink but it still didn't work.

Hi All,

Internet Explorer (7 and 8) will open and close immediately under Vista Home Premium. I have tried the following:

1) Run IE in no adds-on mode. Does the same thing.

2) Reset all settings under the Internet Options Panel---when it gets to the third part 'Applying Default Settings' it fails.

3) Run Malware Malabytes in Safe Mode---nothing detected.

4) Install IE8 (wasn't working back when it was IE7), still no luck. Uninstalled back to IE 7, no working, and then back to IE8.

So, any ideas? I normally use Firefox and Opera, but there is one specific work-related website that requires some ASP scripting that neither Firefox or Opera can handle!

Thanks!

IE 11 opens and then closes immediately. The only way to open IE 11 is to right click on IE shortcut, select properties, then set to open minimized. Then click IE 11 on toolbar, and it opens. Setting IE 11 to Normal or Maximized causes IE 11 to open then immediately close. I have removed then re-installed IE 11, ran malewarebytes and ccleaner but IE 11 still has the same problem. I turned off GP rendering. I am out of ideas, does anyone have any other methods to try?

A:ie 11 opens then closes immediately

Run CCleaner-Slim or CCleaner-Portable & remove everything it finds, then try IE11 again. If that doesn't do it, go to Internet Options > Advanced tab, then click the reset button located near the bottom.https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/b...

Its wise to make sure when you are doing updates and Service Packs to make sure the system is 100% malware free. With that said, why wold the SP3 not install? Did you recieve an error and if so what was the EXACT error message?

You can try to run the following command to see if any DLL files are missing/damaged.

sfc /scannow

Try also the install folder of the app you use with IE7, if there is a DLL called PSAPI.dll
if there is delete it or rename the file.

I have upgraded a Dell Latitude with a much larger HDD. I re installed Win XP and went directly to Windows to update all patches etc... Once all downloads were installed I clicked on internet icon and was brought directly to the Internet Options dialog box. I tried changing the web address here and still had the same problem. I might add that I also installed Office 2003 with no problems but during my windows updating I did see some updates for Office as well.
Could Office have made some changes? I've only downloaded Office once or twice and have never seen this before.
Another thought, while downloading, sp3 and IE8 were installed.

Has anybody come across this before?

Hello,

Boot into Safe Mode and see if you can uninstall the program then try the reinstall.

If still does not work try creating a new user profile. Create a new browser user profile - Google Chrome Help

If still having issue make sure that your antivirus is up to date and perform a scan on the PC.

See the thread below and try the recommended fix. Hopefully this helps

Had to reinstall Win7 and reinstall backup files. Now the program "TreePad" (freeform DB) opens and loads data but immediately minimizes to the task bar. Cannot get it on desktop to see the contents. I have tried many things to get it to open on the desktop but no luck. I even reinstalled the video driver just in case. No help there.
Not having this problem with any other program... Have contacted the vendor but no response as yet. Downloaded a new copy of the program but it acts the same way.
Any ideas are welcome. Thanks.

Hello FYI, I was referred to post here by MRT.Today I did Windows updates. Before updating, I had Win XP SP2 and IE6 (IE6 used to work fine). After updating, I had IE7 and XP SP3.After going to IE7 and XP SP3:IE will not work. IE flashes open and closes very fast. The text in the cmd prompt dialog box is now teeny tiny microscopic (was normal sized before).Wireless connection will not work. (worked fine before; now using ethernet connection to DSL modem).I found this topic on Microsoft's site:When you start Internet Explorer, it opens, flashes, and then closes immediatelyhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/967896Tried "resetting" IE, as per Microsoft's instructions.....didn't work.I uninstalled IE7, and IE6 still did not work. Went back to Control Panel, Network Connections, right clicked on Wireless Network Connection, hit Properties, clicked TCP/IP, hit Properties. Thought this would be a good place to ask this...if not, feel free to point me in the right direction.

I've had this problem ever since the first betas, thinking that it would eventually work or "be fixed"--but even the release candidate and now the final has the same issue.

When I install IE9, when I go to open up the browser (32 or 64), it opens for a split second and then immediately closes. Every single time. I've never seen IE9 open on this machine.

One of my thoughts on why would be that I have two hard drives in this machine--a 60GB SSD and a 1TB HDD. I manually edited the registry entry for default install location / program files location to the E: drive, or 1TB drive, so I don't mistakenly install programs onto the SSD and clog up its limited space. For 95% of programs this has worked out just fine, including Microsoft's own Security Essentials (even though I'd love to have the option to put it on the SSD, but there's no options on where to install it).

Anyone else run into a problem like this? Is there a better solution than reverting that program files change? Now that I've had Windows running for a while I imagine changing that record will cause some...not so nice issues.

EDIT: And I just checked--IE9 is indeed installing to Program Files on the E:\ drive.

A:IE9 opens for a split second, then immediately closes.

For IE crashing, you probably want to try starting it from the command line first to see if it works this way - start > run > iexplore -extoff. If so, you have an add-on causing an issue, and can disable them via autoruns.

Hello technicians at Bleeping Computer. I have a problem I have been trying to fix but to no avail! At random, internet explorer will magically pop open without any doing on my part. It does not display any malicious sites just the MSN homepage. It does not do it constantly but, when it does occur, it will open like 3 or 4 of them. Also, I do not use Internet Explorer. I use firefox and chrome. I have tried numerous ad-ware and spyware scans but nothing has come up! I'd appreciate it if you folks could help me vanquish this menace!

Hello and Welcome to Bleeping Computer!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process. Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.NOTE:... Hello all, this is my first post here.I am having an issue with IE. It randomly opens windows. The biggest issue is that I don't even use IE, I use Firefox. I did a google search on the issue and came up with a closed post at "http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/128039/internet-explorer-opens-by-itself/"I read through it and followed the steps listed for SilverSol. Of the files listed to be uninstalled, I found CiD Help. I uninstalled the program and then rebooted. I then copy/pasted the line "C:\DOCUME~1\GINA~1.REG\APPLIC~1\INSIDE~1\Dent Base.exe" -uninstall into Run. Came up with an error saying that the file was not found. I Downloaded and ran Deljob.exe. Lastly I ran Hijackthis for the log file. I have just installed Microsoft's One Works and now my IE opens with the message that reads "Internet Explorer is open without add-ons" or something close to that. I know this must be a simple setting somewhere, but I can't find where to enable all the add-ons again. I see under "Tools > Manage Add-ons> but they're all listed as Enabled anyway.

Hi, I hope someone can help me with this. The last couple of days IE loads itself, some times more than 5-6 instances, but every day at least two.

I have W7 Home edition, and I use Firefox as my default browser.

Thanks for your help

This could certainly be an indication of malware infection. Where does it go when it starts? If it goes to anywhere other than your home page, then it is almost a certainty your system is infected. I recommend you follow these instructions.

I think I may have identified and solved my problem. A couple of programs (Sk0.exe, Sk1.exe) were running in a temp folder. Maybe Trojans? I deleted them in safe mode, along with a batch of other recent temp files, and as of now, Internet Explorer hasn't opened independently. My computer is also noticeably faster than it has been the last few days. If there's any other suspicious looking programs running in the log above, please let me know. Since the gmer scan didn't find any rootkits, maybe there's no other problems. Anyway, thanks for the look!!!

No idea how long for sure this has going on but it's been awhile. Internet Explorer keeps opening up on it's own and it's getting pretty annoying. The websites it opens up aren't harmless as far as I know but it's still pretty annoying.

After I get done using the dds.scr thing the logs will not pop up.
GMER keeps giving me a blue screen when it gets to a certain point.

Hi,

Please try this scan:

Download OTL to your DesktopDouble click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

Every few minutes or so, internet explorer opens itself with ads. Usually two windows open at the same time and contain the same ad. I close them and the cycle keeps repeating itself. I've scanned with ad-aware and spybot and removed everything found, yet the problem persists. Can anyone suggest what I should do?

Edit: The problem started after I downloaded the first link here: hxxp://kenborden.com/rebelbetting-3-0-1006...megaupload.html

Internet explorer opens on its own, but no window appears i can just see it running in process manager(and sometimes hear the I.E clicking noise, as if its loading a page). If i close one another opens. i have it blocked through my firewall but its not ideal and seems to freeze up my computer from time to time. I did exactly as the guide said, but last night, i tried to run the gmer.exe it took hours and when i woke up the next day there was an error message saying corrupt files run chkdsk(dont remeber exact messages). I didnt and switched my computer off. then my computer wouldnt boot. i put the windows cd and ran repair and chkdsk through there and it booted up ok, so i have no log for gmer and not sure i should run it again. Thanks in advance for any help, perhaps it would be easier to just do a clean install?

Hi,

I noticed lately that sometimes when I do a google search in Firefox and click on a link I'll be brought to some other ad/search site. It could be going on for awhile; I don't normally use Firefox and only noticed this problem when I opened it a few days ago. I don't have this problem in Chrome. Anyway, when I put two and two together I went to open Microsoft Security Essentials to run a scan only to find that as soon as I open it, it closes. Usually within a second. I ran a complete scan with Malware Bytes that did not find anything malicious but quarantined a few files which I deleted.

I am running Windows 7 64-bit.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

I'm having a problem with my computer that I just can't seem to solve. I first noticed while online I am having trouble typing in the address bar. When I attempt to type the text will highlight or delete itself. For example it I type www. It will highlight or just show ".w". Also the screen has a steady flicker. Typing in search boxes for yahoo or Google seems to work fine. I have also noticed that when I click on the start menu that it will not stay on. I comes on for a split second then closes. It gives me almost no time to open programs or anything else. Most drop down menus do the same. Another thing, anything highlighted in any program has a steady flicker.
What I done so far is to scan for a virus or malware with Spybot, Malwarebyte, Ad-Aware and AVG and so far everything is fine. . I'm running Win XP SP3 Intel CPU, 1.60 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM.
Any help with this problem will be greatly appreciated.. Thanks

I click on the OneDrive icon on the Windows 8.1 Start screen and the app opens, then immediately closes. All other apps work OK.
I have tried the troubleshooters, reset the Store cache and uninstalled and reinstalled Onedrive but the problem continues.
Another issue that is probably related is, although the Onedrive app is installed on the Start screen, it does not show on "My Apps" at "My Account" at the Windows Store.
Like I said above, I have uninstalled and reinstalled the OneDrive app several times but the situation remains.

It all started when I tried to change the name of the person to which the computer was originally registered to mine. Seemed easy until I tried to run regedit. Screen flashes on and then closes in seconds. From all I read- it could be a virus. I have McAfee installed. Did not detect anything. Ran adaware and spybot- which took care of some files but problem persists. Have tried to install Hijackthis but anytime I type this word in google I am returned to desktop screen immediately. Can't install it. Now what????

This has become a serious problem for my computer. IE-7 will open while I am browsing with Mozilla Firefox and has locked up my computer more than once. I have tried re-downloading IE-7 and re-installing it but have run into the same problems. I know this is a virus problem but I have no idea what to do now. Thanks in advance for any help.

Do you have any antivirus installed? The best would be one with aout protect function.
First I would try scanning the computer with free version of ad-aware then Spybot search and Destroy.

I will admit that my normal web access is through Mozilla Firefox but I do use I.E. on a number of occasions. My problem is that, when I put in a search, or type in a URL in to the address bar on I.E., it opens up and/or goes to the page in Firefox. I can't get off my home page in I.E.

I have tried only opening I.E., and/or closing Firefox but it still does the same thing. Can anyone suggest how I can fix it so I can use I.E. too?

[Text of this message copied from the archives of another help forum. There, someone suggested that user set IE to be the default browser. I tried that but it didn't work.]

A:Internet Explorer Opens Firefox Instead.

If you're using XP, give this a try.DefaultBrowser allows you set the default web browser for your user profile in Windows XP, without affecting the other users. The list of browsers you see in the Presets are tested and working flawlessly as user defaults. Note that the user interface in Windows XP does not provide an option for setting the default browser for each user. This utility is designed for Windows? XP systems only.Apart from the Presets list, there is an option at the bottom which allows you choose the Web Browser program file and set it as the default. You may use this section if your favorite browser is not listed under Presets. As you read in the dialog, this method does not work with all the browsers. If the results are not satisfactory using this method, you can undo the configuration by clicking the Reset button. Here is the list of Web browsers that I've tested (and working) for the per-user feasibility, and their versions: (continued)....http://windowsxp.mvps.org/defaultbrowser.htm

Hello cmason,

We can't do anything without seeing a set of logs to find the malware that is causing this.

Use another computer to download the tools listed in our sticky topic New Instructions - Read This Before Posting for Malware Removal Help. Transfer the tools to the infected computer and run the scans.

You may have to save the scans to usb stick and use another computer to post them to us.

So yea,
About a week ago my computer randomly started turning down the volume to 0, and then opening two copies of Internet Explorer, that start playing "Taylor Swift - 22" (not sure if relevant ?)

I've solved the internet explorer problem by disabling it, but it still turns down the volume to 0 every hour or so, which is quite frustrating..

I've spent several hours googleling this, cant find anything. So I turn to you ! Good people of techguy !

I have a laptop with Windows 7 64 bit. The first few days I had it, Internet Explorer worked fine. Then it malfunctioned. When you double click the IE shortcut it would open for a split second then close. When you went to the Start menu, Programs, it would do the same.

I downloaded and installed IE 8 64 bit from Microsoft's website. When I double click the IE 8 64 bit shortcut it opens fine! The problem is, I can't set IE 8 64 as my default browser. I get a Windows error message that says you can not set IE 8 64 as your default browser.

So I can open IE 8 64 manually but any link I click tries to open IE 8 (32 bit presumably) which still opens then immediately closes.

Please help!

use regedit and modify the following
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\IEXPLORE.EXE
Change the value to C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\command

Thank you members for your past help!! I think I must have chosen something wrong and can't find it in what I think are the regular ways: Control Panel> Set Program Access and Computer Defaults> or Control Panel> Internet Options.

It's very difficult because I can't do anything with a webpage trying to open in a [read only] page of Word and, of course, cannot use the site. It's only been happening since last Fall so I keep thinking I must have changed something by mistake. It doesn't happen every single time I'm in a site so some must have a different setting that overrides whats in mine? It was around the time I installed Internet Explorer 9 Beta so I wonder if it happened during that?

Thank you very much for any help you can offer,
Deb

As the title describes, I'm having trouble with what I have no idea to define as other than an evil virus from the deep reaches of internet hell.

At the moment, my firefox browser crashes upwards of 5 times in a day. My computer is slow, though not unbearably so. What ticks me off the most, though, is the fact that I have disabled access to Internet Explorer (to at least hinder what was going on until I could get someone to repair my computer), and I can hear clicking in the background of my computer's sound occasionally, as well as various advertisements being played (the last one I remember was Bing), and occasionally a box will pop up, prompting if I want to set Internet Explorer as my current browser. Seeing as how I disabled it, I'm really, really baffled. I can't see it in the task manager when I bring it up under the 'applications' tab.

At the moment, I own CCleaner, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Using the latter two brings up multiple problems, which I have removed, and usually with Malwarebytes, the computer has to restart in order to finish up the process. However, once I restart, I find that I have the same problems with the computer. Scanning again with Malwarebytes returns just as many, if not more, problems than before. I've used TDSS to check for rootkits, but nothing is ever returned.

Can I get some help, please?

Hi,First of all, I see you are running Teatimer.I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system. When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again. If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.How to disable TeaTimer <== click me for instructions. After you disabled Teatimer, download ResetTeaTimer.exe to your desktop. There click "Check for updates"Once the updates are downloaded, perform a quick scan again. The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient. When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log, then we'll proceed from there with new steps.Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed w... I would first like to thank anyone and everyone that offers to help. My problem started yesterday. I personally haven't downloaded anything though I can't vouch for some friends that were over. I use Firefox as my main browser and only use IE for Windows Updates. I also use the View in IE Tab extension for a few sites that just look weird in Firefox.

My problem is that occasionally I will start to hear what seems like a Japanese game show or variety show. There is music and voices. It also sounds like it could be two different shows running at the same time. There are no programs open in the taskbar but the Task Manager will show an iexplore.exe process running. If I end that process the music and voices go away. They then come back some time later. It happens while I'm at the computer working on Firefox or not. I closed out all programs and went to bed but it was going when I woke up this morning. If I don't end the process, it does eventually go away/get quiet (though the process is still running) and then it'll come back sometime later.

It sounds like you might have a virus, run your Antivirus program to see if it picks anything up.

Hi all!

I have a problem with Internet Explorer, when I try to open it you can see it in the task bar and click on it but it doesn't open on screen. I can see it flying to the left of the screen and opening out of site. I've tried uninstalling IE7 also tried to resize the taskbar as micrososft suggests or If resizing your Taskbar does not work, run Regedit and remove the following registry key values which are most likely corrupt. Do not delete the entire key, just the last word which will appear in the right hand pane.

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\window_placement

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\OldWorkAreas\OldWorkAreaRects

The latter one displays a value of 00 00 00 00 00 05 00 e2 03 00 00 fb ff 00....... after restarting and doesn't solve the problem

Any ideas?

Hello all

A few weeks ago my internet explorer started randomly opening to my homepage and, if I was already browsing, it would redirect me to my homepage as well as opening up to 40-odd other windows. More often than not these pges are almost impossibe to close down and more will take their place when they do, this happens to the point where everything freezes and I have to force it to shutdown. I'm running Avast4 and Zonealarm alongside Spyware Blaster. I have scanned with Spybot, Ad-aware, Malwarebytes and others. All have shown nothing. I understand that this may be hardware as I do have a quick launch key for the internet but as far as i know this wouldn't cause the browser to return to the homepage....or would it? In anycase when I tried this key, even pressing it a dozen or so times, the pages were a lot easier to close down than when even only 6 pages open at random.

It seems to happen in spurts, and sometimes when I'm scanning for spyware, although this is pretty much all that I have done since the problem started.

Any help would be very greatfully recieved.

Thanks.

Hello,

So I have just been stupid enough to download the new antivirusXP which I found out after was actually a Virusin iteself I was able to get rid of it using a real antivirus and I am now 100% sure that the virus has gone. However when I went to load up internet explorer it did not work.

It comes up with a blank white screen with the tool bars there however nothing showing no `The page you are trying to view is not avliable` or anything. I have XP I am not sure what the problem is, I re-installed the disc which I got with the internet provider I am with (SFR). The only other thing which does not make sense is there is no Proxy server in the place where oen is written (the number is usually 80 I think) I tried to type 80 but nothing happened.

Thanks and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I like what IE7 is doing right, but I have one very frustrating problem with it. Every time I click on a program that is linked to a Website, or a site stored in My Favorites; IE7 opens two of that program or site. Very strange I know. With most of them it is just an annoyance to have to shut one down; HOWEVER my Word Search 7 - Bible Discussion Group, is such a HIGH memory useage program, that it totally Freezes up when two windows of that program open up. When I go to the Task Manager to End Task, sure enough there are two WS7 - Bible Discussion Group windows open, both saying "NOT RESPONDING". How do I stop this from happening?

Greetings. When I open IE8 with Window it will continue to open "ad infinitum". I have swept w/resident virus and malware programs -- Trend Micro Internet Security, Webroot Spy Sweeper, and Uniblue Registry Booster -- but with no success. I have reset IE8 to its default settings, but still the problem persists.

Originally I used Trend Micro's Hijack This to try to sort through the problem, because it started out as a non-stop redirection of IE8 to "ask.com". I thought I recognized an issue on the Hijack This scan page w/R3, but I ended up deleting R3 altogether (I checked the R3 and mashed the "fix checked" button) Now it repeatedly revists the IE8 MSN.com page.

Anyway, I would sure like to find the solution because using the Windows Task Manager to delete the repeatedly popping up IE's is getting old and annoying.

Let me know what other info is needed to help diagnose the problem. Thanks!!

Before doing anything if you have not already done so, you should back up all your important documents, personal data files and photos to a CD or DVD drive as some infections may render your computer unbootable during or before the disinfection process. I have a new Toshiba Satellite, less than a month old, running Windows 7.  I generally use Firefox as my browser, but about two weeks ago Internet Explorer randomly began popping up to msn.com, a site which is not my usual homepage, unbidden.  This occurs at unpredictable intervals, anywhere from 2-30 times a day.  I have run several different malware programs, without success.  The only unusual thing I see on my computer is "Internet Explorer Toolbar 4.9 by Sweetpacks," which I have been unable to delete, despite multiple attempts. I use Windows Firewall and Avast antiviral/antimalware.

Please help--this is very annoying, interrupts serious work, and utilizes resources.
