Solved: Cannot get into Firefox profile manager

Q: Solved: Cannot get into Firefox profile manager

Ok:I know that I am going to feel stupid when you answer this, but here goes:
Running XP Home Sp2,F/F

When I go to Start/run and type in:

"c:\program files\mozilla firefox\firefox.exe" -profilemanager

Start/run firefox.exe -profilemanager

Firefox logs me onto my ISP home page, just like I had clicked the Mozilla icon to log onto the internet.
This fails the same way on my laptop running XP Home SP1,so I just know it's me,but I don't see the error.

A: Solved: Cannot get into Firefox profile manager

Check your Task Manager and make sure that Firefox is not running in the background. Try the command again.
You might need to uninstall and reinstall Firefox from the Control Panel. Your profile folder will not be deleted.

I use Firefox's profile manager to run multiple instances of Firefox with different profiles. This allows me to improve my online security.
For example, I have a profile which is dedicated to webmail.
When I receive e-mails with links or attachments, I will never open them in the webmail instance, but in another instance dedicated to general surfing.
Anybody else using the profile manager for this purpose? Just wondering.

A:Firefox: do you use the profile manager?

I don't see using different profiles unless there is more than one user or testing a beta release of Firefox.
Just checked here...Multiple Firefox profiles - Mozilla | MDN
No mention of this being more secure in the sense of isolating a malware install, etc.
Just protects the main Firefox from bookmark corruption, etc. when testing or developing.

Hello All,
Here's my problem. I've erased my profile from Mozilla Firefox. I HAVE NOT however erased the profile files.

I have since created a profile with a different name. I would like to import the old profile info (bookmarks inparticular) to my new "default" profile.

As well, what if I wanted to import info from another Mozilla Firefox profile?

Can this be done?

I've tried everything but I can't seem to figure it out.

If you do post please be advised that I am not all that familiar with Firefox.

Thank you all for your time.

A:Solved: Mozilla Firefox...Erased Profile but not files...trying to import to new profile

I move mine manually all the time. If you just want to add the bookmarks.html, just move the one you saved to the new profile. Here is the official instructions from Firefox on backup and restore of the Profile.

I think my windows XP may be corrupt. If I close firefox, I must create a new profile every time by running
firefox.exe -ProfileManager
and even when I do I cannot see the profile file I just created. I cannot load a profile from a flash drive or other location.
so I leave firefox open for as long as I can until I have to shut down my computer.
My Documents and Settings file constantly has 'read only' box highlighted even if I change it for 'all folders, files and subfiles'
I've searched for similar problems here but any ones I found were not applicable or not answered.

I've done a Malwarebyes scan and things look clean, will post any other things requested if you think you can help.
I'm running to the store, will look back in about 30 min.

Thanks in advance

I did a quick search and didn't see any posts related to this issue. Apologizes if there is one and I missed it.

I have a problem that has just started. I cannot change the priority or end process using Task Manager or Process Explorer for Firefox and any Flash plugins that are running. I can end Firefox by using the Applications tab of Task Manager and there is no problem just quitting Firefox normally. I also have access to other processes (or the ones that I've checked). It's like Firefox and the Flash plugin are being locked by some other process. I have occasionally had a Flash process hang and have been able to kill it in Task Manager, as well or change priority for Firefox. Not now.

I am logged in as Administrator. I have a number of unneeded services stopped using msconfig, but I have not changed anything recently that I'm aware of.

I have tried:
Showing all users in Task Manager before trying to change the processes
Turning off the UAC in Control Panel.
I have run scans using the full version of MalwareBytes, as well as Spybot, MB AntiRootkit, and RogueKiller.
Running CCleaner including the registry function, and running AdwCleaner.
Checking for any Windows updates.
Checking for any Firefox updates.
I removed a couple of Firefox add-ons. I've currently have NoScript, AdBlock Plus, Cookie Culler.
I attempted to use Restore using a fairly recent restore point, but it failed. I hesitated to use an older restore point.

Hey guys,

Yesterday, I shut down my computer. A few hours later when trying to log back in, I get logged onto a blank profile, which I assume is a temporary profile.

Curiously the ProfileImagePath string under key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-21-842173820-3506557639-1618326103-1004 is pointing to C:\Users\Mike_2.Mike-PC instead of C:\Users\Mike_2, which I assume is a temporary/alternate profile. (which I didn't create)

This has happened before, but usually a few restarts fixed the problem, however, that doesn't seem to be working now.

My question is, is there a way to reassociate the profile with the correct user folder? Or do I have to transfer everything over to a clean profile?

A:Solved: User profile dissasociated from account/logging onto temporary profile?

Its not an association issue, the user profile is corrupt, and is replaced by a temporary one.

Best thing to do is create a new user account, and migrate to that.

OK. I screwed up.

I have a laptop with an SSD + a HDD. When I installed it, I installed to C: (SSD) but set up Users and PRogramData to be in the D drive.

This morning, the connector on the HDD slipped and I booted it with out the D drive connected.

Note: Evidently I turned off System Retstore at some point (probably to perform a large installation) and then forgot to turn it back on.

So now when I log in, none of my user profiles are available.

Any idea how to rest this?

A:Cannot start User Profile Manager

How and what settings did you change to point user folders on your D drive?.

Did you do it via the registry?.
I wonder if OS is assigning a different letter to the "D" drive, and now windows can not "find the path of the user folders"

Can you go in safe mode?.

My wife and I share a computer, running Win XP. We've both been using Firefox for quite a while, and are currently on version 4.0.1.

The problem is that my wife cannot start Firefox any longer. Any way we try to start it, you get a brief hourglass, then the computer just acts like you never tried to start it.

If you pull up Windows task manager, it shows firefox as an active process, but not an open application.

The process shows 99% CPU usage. It occasionally dips a little if AdAware does something, bit goes back up to 99%. The application never starts - no matter how long you wait.

I've tried un-installing and re-installing Firefox, but no change.

IE7 works fine for her profile.

I've run multiple scans with Malware Bytes, Super anti spyware, SpybotS&D, Adaware, and MS Security Essentials - all clean.

The only other symptom in her profile is that when you log out, you get a window for "nsAppShell: Event Window", asking if you want to end it now.
The bizarre thing is that Firefox works fine when logged into my profile.

If I check Windows task manager (like right now as I write here) Firefox shows like 20% CPU usage.

Anyone have an idea where to go from here?

I doubt this happened at all. Firefox can only function with 1 profile at a time, unless you've got more than 1 instance of FF installed. More likely you've closed Firefox and re-opened it before it has cleared the Task Manager. It usually denies access to your profile because it is still 'live' in the Task Manager and should this happen, look in the 'Processes' tab of the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and if there is any instance of firefox.exe - select 'End Task'. You will now be able to open FF in your usual profile.

albertec said:

To access the Profile Manager:

Close Firefox and make sure Firefox is not running in the 'Processes' tab of the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del), if it is - End Process then proceed.....

Click - Start > Run > (type) firefox.exe -p
This will take you to your Profile Manager, from here you can select your profile (or create, rename & delete profiles) and take the option to open the Profile Manager on every opening of Firefox. This is handy if you have multiple profiles or you have multiple users.

I finally got tired of all of those JavaScript errors popping up in Firefox and started looking for solutions. I installed the newest Java update and used JavaRa to get rid of the old versions. After that Firefox would not start at all. I assumed it had to do with the newest update - there's a lot of "Firefox not responsive" and "Firefox sucks" stuff out there re: the most recent update - and Safe Mode would not open either. I uninstalled it and installed the previous version 3.5.12 but now I guess it was a problem with my profile because that version wouldn't open either (it appeared in the task manager processes but would not actually open). Never heard that happen before. The default would reset all so it would be like a new install so any changes you made would be lost or that is how it used to be.

q2888wht.default is the old profile i'm trying to use.

why won't it work?

A:Firefox profile won't be accepted on new machine?

A new install is why. The old q2888wht.default file name is now killing FF from seeing the profile.

A new install gaves you a new ????????.default file that is in the register so you want to use that.
What is inside the old q2888wht.default you can still use.
Some extensions you may have to reinstall. Note that most extensions all the folders and files are in the extensions folder. Some extensions will have another folder and or file in the ????????.default like adblockplus does.

Up until now I've always used MozBackup - Backup tool for Firefox and Thunderbird to backup/ restore Firefox profiles. This method worked with Cyberfox/ Waterfox or other Firefox variants that shared the same profile as Firefox. However in preparation for a future upgrade to Cyberfox v.29 the latest version now uses it's own separate profile and MozBackup will not detect the folder path.

So I've started using FEBE Firefox Extension to backup/ restore profiles instead and it seems to work.

The only problem is that it requires actually running Cyberfox then starting the FEBE add on in order to perform profile backup/ restore operations. MozBackup could restore a profile without having to run the browser.

Does anybody know of a reliable alternative Firefox variant profile backup/ restore utility that's similar to MozBackup? I know about copying and creating profiles using Profile Manager but again it requires use of the browser and I'm looking for a solution that will work independently.

Have you tried a complete uninstall/reinstall of Firefox.Note: You will have to go back and redo all of your personal settings (Options), as deleting the Profile folder will erase everything Firefox related. You will be starting with a clean slate. To completely uninstall Firefox, you will need to delete your Profile folder. This file is not removed when you uninstall Firefox from Add/Remove. It will retain all of your previous settings, and re-apply them to your new install, if it's not deleted. That's why, when you install a new version of Firefox, your previous settings, bookmarks, passwords, etc., all remain the same. For a Fresh (start from scratch) install, this folder has to be removed. You might want to make a copy of the Bookmark.html file, before you uninstall, and save it to somewhere you'll be able to find it.This is where all of your Bookmarks are stored.Set windows to show hidden files,How to see hidden files in Windows Then navigate to:C:\ Documents and Settings \ "your user name" \ Application Data \ Mozilla \ Firefox \ Profiles \ default.random characters \ Bookmark.htmlAnd make a copy of the Bookmark.html fileThen you can replace, the new one created, with the old one, you copied. After you install Firefox, delete Bookmark.html, and replace it with your saved copy of Bookmark.html.Restart Firefox. That way, you'll have all of your Bookmarks back. Now for the uninstall.Uninstall your current version of ... Hello all,

A friend of mine suggested this addon to me a while ago and I think I should share it with you - if you aren't already using it that is!

As the thread title suggests, this is for Firefox only.

FEBE is a Firefox addon that allows the user to make a full backup of their Firefox profile. Your Firefox profile stores all of your addons, settings and bookmarks. If you ever have any problems with Firefox, you can just restore to one of these backups - it can essentially be used as a system restore for Firefox.

I've very recently (this morning) reinstalled Windows 7 and FEBE saved me the hassle of importing all of my Firefox data again. Within seconds of running FEBE, I had all of my addons, bookmarks and settings back

For more information on FEBE, go to:

FEBE Firefox Extension
To download FEBE, go to:
When I find time, I will make a tutorial on it But until then, you'll have to work it out for yourselves - it isn't that hard.

A:FEBE - Firefox Profile Backups

Thanks for reminding me. I didn't have it installed on FF 5. I've been using it for quite awhile.

edit: hmm, doesn't seem to like FF 5. It just hangs after backing up 2 AddOns.

edit2: guess it just doesn't like selective backup. I set it to full profile and it was done in like 1/10th of a second!

edit3: Sorry, I know it's not your job to support FEBE

I need to transfer my Firefox bookmarks from a WinME to a WinXP OS. I'm not sure at all how this will work.

As far as I know, the bookmarks are all in one file. Is this right? Something like bookmarks.bak.. actually, there are two that I can see so far. One one of them is .bak.
Ok, so if I copy everything from the folder:
C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\Jim Carrey\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\adz9m5j7.default

and I copy it onto a CD-R, will I be able to copy those files directly into
C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\Jim Carrey\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\adz9m5j7.default

on the other PC? Assuming it's the same directory path of course..

Another thing I'm not sure about is the change of Operating Systems. Will this affect anything at all? I only have one chance at this (I'm moving).
I'm using Firefox now, on this WinME pc. On the XP, it will have Firefox 2 (or whatever is newest) installed. Will this make any other difficulties?

The plan is to copy all the files from that folder onto cd-r, install Firefox on the new XP pc, put the cd-r into the XP and copy all those Firefox profile files into the right folder on that pc. Just wondering if you guys can help me out.
Thanks for the help.

Edit: I just read I can export the bookmarks to a file, so it's easier. But I'm still not sure about the whole switching OS's and all that. But, is that bookmarks file the only file I will need? Will there be any other files that support that file being there or ... Read more

A:Transferring Firefox profile/files onto other PC

Oh, and just out of curiosity, is there any way you can export each bookmark inside the 'bookmarks' file so they are each individual bookmark by itself (like Internet Explorer does)? Or, even better, writes them all down into text?
That'd be even more useful - if you can copy all the bookmarks into wordpad.

Hey, All.

I was just browsing with firefox yesterday and then a blue screen occurred. Blue screens were not new to me since my hard drive is getting really old and I believe the blue screen was caused by my deteriorating hard drive.

Anyways, after rebooting windows ran check disk but as it was running I saw something new from my normal check disk blue screen recovery runs. It was doing something called "File cross linking" I did not know what it was so I just let it run. But after a while it stopped the cross linking thingy because hard drive space run out (my hard drive had only 4 gb of free space remaining).

It then exited the check disk and after I logged in to windows, I ran firefox. To my surprise all of my tabs, addons, bookmarks, etc. Were gone! But I was not really affected of this since I keep a back up folder of my profile folder so I just simply copy and pasted the back up unto the profile folder. I then ran firefox again and all off my things were back in order. So my problem now is that windows was telling me that free space remaining was really few. I cleaned with ccleaner, and then looked for the mysterious file or folder that ate up 3 gb of my remaining 4gb remaining.

I found out that the folder that ate up the memory was the firefox profile folder. I then uninstalled firefox and then the 3gb that the folder ate halved.

I tried deleting the whole Mozilla folder inside my application data directory, but I couldn't. I kept getting a "C... Read more

Hi Folks,

I currently use several different Firefox profiles and they are all grouped together on the taskbar. When I hover the mouse over the Firefox icon, it will display the name of the currently opened tab or window of each different profile. Is it possible to change anything so that it will instead show the name of the profiles? For instance: default, Stocks, Developing, etc?

Cheers, Ian

Just put on the Windows 7 RTM. 15 minute install : most impressive. Then a 2 hour wrangle trying to get Firefox 3.51 going : most infuriating.

Previously I have shared Firefox profiles in dual-boot without a problem. One just has to point Firefox on the second OS at the location of the original profile with FF profile manager. However..

I am getting the following error message with Widnows 7 every time and with every profile.

"Firefox cannot use the profile because it is in use.
To continue, close the running instance of Firefox or choose a different profile."

I have tried every suggestion on the Firefox help page (but the last) without success.
Profile in use - MozillaZine Knowledge Base

To be honest I suspect it is something to do with folder permissions in Windows 7. Immediately after installing Windows 7 I had to change the drive letter assignments using Disk Management, because Windows 7 did not take the lead from my XP drive assignments as I had hoped.

However, having changed the drive letters back to my liking (apart from C: for Windows 7) I found all drives, folders and files to be read only!? I selected all and changed their properties to read and write (including the option to change all subfolders), but it does not seem to have worked properly. Every further subfolder is still read only! My patience with this is wearing thin. What can be done?

A:Firefox - Problem sharing a profile in dual-boot

I use same profiles folder for Windows 7 and Vista. No problem at all. My profile folder is in a drive which has the same letter in both boots. For instance. It is always f:\Profiles, no matter if I boot 7 or Vista. Never had a problem. Just make sure FF is the same version in both boots as 3.5 has some incompatibilities with previous versions (specially passwords)

As of today, in our domain environment consisting of Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 Enterprise machines, we are experiencing the "User Profile service failed the sign-in - User profile cannot be loaded" error message whenever a user tries to login.
This only affects users new to the particular machine. If they have signed on before and already have a cached account the computer logs them in with no issue. This is occurring on both Win8.1 and Win7 machines. We are an academic institution so this is becoming
a huge problem in our labs. Students generally use different computers so this is popping up very frequently. I have a solution for the issue. It appears that on the non-working machines that the "Default" user profile is corrupt. I have discovered
that if I find a machine, Win8.1 or Win7, doesn't matter, that is allowing first time users to logon I can copy the "Default" user profile and replace the corrupt one. I must first permanently delete the corrupt profile before copying over the new
one. I am doing this over the network by navigating the C:\users\ folder. Even this way is becoming cumbersome though as we have over 1000 computer in labs. I have googled and googled and I keep seeing the same answers offering various solutions, none which
are any more practical than my method. I cannot find information on a cause or a reason of why this would just crop up out of nowhere. I suspect maybe a Windows update but I cannot verify that yet. ... Read more

I just performed a clean install of Windows XP Pro on my laptop and installed all of the lastest drivers for everything as per Averatec's website. I installed Firefox 1.0.6 and since then scrolling results in 99% CPU usage for firefox.exe and it takes up to five seconds for it to actually start scrolling and when it does, it stutters severely. Also, scrolling through the Task Manager also uses 99% CPU. I have since uninstalled Firefox but the same thing happens in IE. I have also tried scrolling with and without the Averatec Touchpad drivers installed but still the same effect. This is getting annoying so any help would be greatly appreciated!

My computer is running extremely slow, esp on the internet. So I installed Firefox, and I really like this browser. However, my computer is not running much faster, so I checked task manager and low and behold, I had 12 iexplore.exe in the task manager - although I no longer use IE8. So, I scanned with MS Security Essentials (my AV) = clear. Then I scanned with Malwarebytes = clear. Started in safemode, scanned with Malwarebytes again = clean

So, I went to control panel>add/remove programs>set program Access and defaults and then unchecked Enable access to internet explorer.

Restarted and this seemed to help the computer, it is now running better, but still much slower than it was. But, after 1/2 hour, 3 of those iexplore.exe popped back into my task manager.

I've already replied at WhatTheTech. As there are only a limited number of helpers available on the forums, and researching logs takes time, we ask that you not post the same problem at multiple sites. Even with the overlap of helpers working multiple sites, it is still possible to get responses from two (or three) different helpers. If more than one person is helping you, they might not approach the problem in the same manner and mass confusion could result.

I don't think there is. Firefox has its own password manager or, if you go here and type 'password' into the box, a few pages come up with some password extensions. If you don't need to store many passwords, I think RoboForm allows around 10 to be stored without having to pay for it.

I have done some cleaning, I have found at least one suspect file by doing a google of the files name ((( C:\Windows\system32\jusched.exe ))) and it brought me back here the the file database where it said it was a bad file and that I don't want it. I followed the instructions to remove it. This was to run autoruns.exe in safe mode.... Well...... that doesn't work, as neither autoruns OR Hijackthis found the file while running in safe mode. I don't even think Hijackthis found it untill I opened IE..... I think something is going on where whatever this problem is... it only starts up once I open an internet browser. Also...... I noticed the other day, when I was having this issue..... that my CPU usage was at 100% ..... I have never seen that ..... EVER.... And ... Read more

Okay, so this one is the most "serious" I've seen with any of my computers.   Here's the situation:
1- Firefox suddenly won't display anything (address bar, nav buttons, search bar, etc.   At the top of the browser screen, it's just semi-transparent.  \
   a.  I can't "customize" the screen either.  If I go to menu, options and select "customize"...a new top opens called "custumize firefox"....but the page is 100% blank white
   b.  I   have tried uninstalling Firefox and downloading and installing via IE.....same issue
   c.  I have disabled all help
2- In task manager, for a little while now I'd periodically get a com surrogate dllhost issue, where they would appear and eat up tons of CPU.  I could simply kill those off
3- Task Manager EVERY time I start the computer, I get
   a.  a single instance of svchost.exe that eats like 800,000k of memory, non-stop.  It usally isn't using any CPU though.  I CAN NOT "end process".  It just stays there or I
get an "access denied" even though I'm the admin
   b.  explorer.exe   (just one) uses 100% of the CPU, at all times.  I can end process, but then it really does shut down explorer.  This is EVERY time and at all times.

I moved my Thunderbird and Firefox profile folders from their original locations in Roaming... to a C:\ ... location because their backups were in Compatibility Files. When I went to start either one, I got a close program message. It stated that FF (or when starting TB), they were already running and had to be closed. I then ran Process Explorer and Windows Task Manager. neither of whih showed any indication that these programs were running. I then return the profiles to their original locations, and FF and TB returned to normal. Can anyone explain what was going on?

My old computer was fried by water. So I have a preused desk top from a friend. All of a sudden firefox was continously opening windows and there would be multiple tabs in each window. The only way to stop it would be to open task manager and end them all. It does it every time I open firefox. I also cannot run spybot search and destory. The program has been uninstalled and installed again but I still can not open it. I bought Norton for the computer, but every time I install that, my internet quits and only works if I uninstall norton.

I'm having issues with both Internet Explorer and Outlook.

When I click on internet explorer, the hourglass comes up for a few seconds like it's working, then disappears and nothing happens... but when I check the task manager iexplore.exe is in the list.

I can't use windowsupdate to fix anything on my computer. I've previously had viruses that I've removed and now I don't know what's wrong.

Also, everything works in firefox... weird?

As a side note, I cannot add contacts in Outlook... nor can I download images from emails or even forward emails with images in them.

I do have too many different spyware scanners, but I don't know which ones to keep and which ones to remove. THANKS!

Couple of days ago my laptop (Windows XP 2000)got affected by bad spy/malwares. Here are the symptoms:
1. Getting Task manager has been disabled by administrator error message when typing cntrl+alt+del or right clicking on the task bar
2. My wireless connestion is fine, but I can't go online using firefox or IE. Note: I have an application called "Free Call" which uses internet to make calls and this works fine, thus I believe that my internet connection is fine.
3. I was frustrated with not being able to go to the internet(!!!!!), so I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.28 and Super AntiSypware (hope it was allright to run these).
4. I was not able to update them before running the scan as it would not allow to do so. So I ran with whatever version I already had on my laptop. After the Super AntiSypware scan was done, I was not able to do a clean reboot as asked so had to do a hard shut down.

Is my laptop totally doomed?

We have users on Windows 7 Enterprise machines.  No one has a roaming profile. Users cannot install programs.  The users move around so they don't use the same machine all the time and there may be 20 profiles on one machine.  They don't
always logout but the machines are restarted once a week at least.   Occasionally we may delete profiles on the machines but this is a remote site so we seldom do.  Users primarily use remote apps. served up either by Citrix or web interface.
Little is done locally other than printing.  All machines are imaged with the same software. All users do the same thing.  One user in an office of six machines, can only login to three of the machines with a temporary profile.  She has no
profile under Users.  There is no .bak registry entry.  I cannot locate anything in the registry that points to this user.  I checked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE|SOFTWARE|MICROSOFT|WINDOWSNT|CURRENT VERSION|PROFILELIST.  There were 20 profiles but
none for this user.  No .bak profiles for her, nothing.  I found a post that suggested increasing registry size/reboot but still no clue.  This has been going on for months and she just let me know but I don't know if she called the help desk

A:Windows 7 Enterprise - User logs in with temporary profile - 3 different machines/no roaming profile?

Thanks.  She's working on the computer and does not logoff and back on quickly.  I just rechecked and there absolutely is not a .bak with her name.  On either computer.  I did find one for Temp and one for another user so now I have a
second user getting the profile issue.  I renamed that one and when the other user logged in, he got his profile.

Guess I will just re-image the computers although I'd like to figure it out but I don't have the spare time to waste and don't want my user to keep getting the temp profile.  My company won't pay for the support and frankly, in all the years I've
been in IT, I've never had MS resolve one issue for me.  Not worth paying for.  Oh well, thanks for your suggestions.  If I have time to devote to this and figure anything else out, I will post the answer.

Ok so my buddy's ancient xp laptop has failing video. I logged onto it as an administrator and shared all the users documents. I proceeded to another pc in the house running Vista and created an administrator account with the same credentials as the laptop's then copied (mostly I used copy but for a few folders I used the move command) over the network the primary users profile folder. It took two attempts. It failed to connect the first time but succeeded after I returned to the laptop and disabled simple file sharing and gave the laptops administrator's user account I shared the folders from security permissions to all user folders in question.

I had my friend's girlfriend verify all her pictures were in place on the Vista PC and they were. I felt like "see I do know my stuff". They aren't computer people and have alot of old failing machines I keep going for them. I do this for a living and must have donated a not insignificant amount of time keeping their aging stuff going and I've had a string of having to tell them I simply couldn't make things like HD transcoding and playback run "any more better" or that I couldn't software fix failing hardware on their aging collection of machines. So I was happy for the successful move.

My bud's girl ended up staying on the PC's Admin's profile FaceBooking and reminiscing about the irreplaceable pictures that absolutely needed to be saved from the laptop. The ones of a recently lost loved one the lo... Read more

After experiencing some blue screens (graphics driver related) I reverted back to 314.22 and this morning decided to give the card a good clean.

This is my main PC which has Windows 7 Home Premium, Q9450, GTX 260 (216).

Somehow I managed to corrupt my user profile and received the User Profile Service failed the logon message. Following the advice to boot in using Safe Mode showed only my profile with no access to the registry editor or command line. I then rebooted in safe mode with command line and enabled the built in administrator account. The next reboot into safe mode showed my account and other. Since mine is the only account that I have set up and I am not able to create a new account (the Control Panel user account options do not work) I have no idea what to do next.

I would prefer not to have to perform a fresh install so any help would be gratefully received.

I have a user that has now left our company and would therefore like to delete their roaming profile from the profiles folder on our server.

I have deleted their account from Active Directory and have then tried to delete their profile from the roaming profiles folder. But when I do this I get the access denied message, the reason being that the file may be open or I do not have sufficient rights. I have also taken ownership of the folder so I have all the correct permissions.

Anyone have any ideas ?

Hello guys, logging to this site after a long hiatus (good streak of problem-free PC!)

I recently bought a Acer Q302LA laptop and installed many software on it (mainly GOG games, Sophos, WinRAR, virtual clone drive, nothing illegal or dubious). Not sure if this is relevant, but somehow I downloaded Trovi search engine, but I uninstalled it via add/remove programs, changed homepage settings and search engine in Firefox and IE, and ran MBAM, so I believe I have removed it completely.

Now my problem is this: I noticed that I am having trouble with both firefox and IE, in that I will have multiple instances of both in task manager that I am unable to force kill process, giving me message that access is denied. As a result, I cannot open new firefox after the last one is closed. In addition, when I was able to open firefox after restarting my PC, both firefox and IE take forever to load pages, with spinning logos on the tabs. What is perplexing is that sometimes these web browsers linger in task manager after restarting, even if I didn't start these programs.

So as of now I have 8+ IE and 2+ firefox in my task manager that I cannot kill, and excruciating slow loading of web pages or inability to open new firefox without restarting.

I ran both MBAM and Sophos, didn't detect any malware/virus. What do I do next?? Am I in right forum??

Thank you for you help!!

A:Can't kill multiple firefox and IE in task manager, hang process, slow loading

The task manager should show a process for each tab in IE and for each separate window for Firefox. I would suggest uninstalling Firefox and re-installing, to see if the problem returns.

Within IE, go to "Manage add-ons" by clicking on the cog icon in the top right hand corner (Tools (ALT + X)) and look through the extensions, toolbars, etc., to see if anything suspicious is there (disable anything you are unsure about).

I have been having trouble for a couple weeks with Firefox. Every so often Firefox will hang, and cause a total system freeze for a short period of time. Sometimes this can cause explorer to crash too, other times if for example I was watching a YouTube video or a Twitch stream, I get a message saying the shockwave plugin is not responding. This would then again cause an entire system lock up. I would then begin to attempt to open up task manager with the Ctrl+Shift+Esc combination. On my computer it would always instantaneously open up. During these experiences it does not show up at all. So I would then attempt to right click the taskbar to open Task Manager from the options there. The taskbar (as I'm assuming explorer was still hung) would not respond for a couple minutes until finally the menu pops up. I would then select Task Manager. After a short while (maybe 30 seconds) Task Manager would finally show up. It is here that I would see that there are two Task Manager processes. So I would attempt to kill one. I would select the one that was ~100 kb (which I'm assuming is the one that hasn't shown up yet as the other one had ~4000kb). This would be in vain as attempting to kill most processes was also in vain. So I started a round of anti virus and malware checks. I originally started with an Avast! boot time scan. I received an error of 42111. I looked into this and it seems as though Avast! was failing to scan an archived file. After this comp... Read more

I want to preface this inquiry with the following: this is a home lab environment and does not affect production systems in any way. Any information provided will be tested in a test VM prior to execution on any critical system.
I recently joined my primary home system to my lab domain. I wanted to retain all of the settings and configurations of my local system but use a domain account to login. I followed this migration write-up:
Step by Step : Migrate Local User Profile to Domain User Profile with all Settings

The gist of the migration involves adding the domain user to the ACL for the C:\Users\localUser with Full Control and propagate those permissions through the folder. This step worked without issue. Then, modify the ACL for the HKCU hive by adding the domain
user to the ACL with Full Control and propagate those permissions through the hive. This step appears to work, but some keys cannot be modified. Finally, we change the ProfileImagePath for the domain user SID under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
and reboot.
The change appears to have worked without issue. All of my settings are intact, and the look and feel is as expected. One very significant problem, however, is that the window (explorer.exe) size and location cache is not functioning. If I click on File
Explorer, the window opens as usual, but the layout is using tiles while I prefer the Details view. I change to the details view and make some other changes, clos... Read more

A:Explorer size and location cache no longer works after migrating local profile to domain profile

I figured out my own issue. Don'tcha love it when that happens?
I logged into the affected machine as the domain administrator, and when I loaded the ntuser.dat hive for the affected user, I noticed that the \Software\Classes key didn't exist. It did, however, exist for the logged on user and it appears to correlate
directly to the key under HKU\[SID]_Classes.
On a hunch, I logged back into the affected profile, drilled down to HKU\[SID]_Classes, and when I checked the permissions, I noticed that the domain user did not have explicit permissions to the key and subkeys. I added Full Control permissions, propagated
them through the key and subkeys, rebooted, et voila! Everything is back to the way it should be.
I'll be leaving a comment for Mahdi Tehrani to ensure this is done to prevent issues like I had.Ron Arestia, MCSA (Server 2012)

A:Windows Cannot Load The User's Profile But Has Logged On With The Default Profile

Corruption of the user profile can be a pain to sort out, especially if it’s the index file that’s failed. SOMETIMES, however, simply logging off, leaving the computer at the ‘Press Ctrl+Alt+Del’ screen for about 30 seconds or so, then logging in as usual, can solve this without any further intervention, so I’d suggest giving that a go first.

Further suggestions are a bit more involved.

Log in as another user with administrative rights (such as Administrator) and then open the My Computer icon and navigate to the local hard disk and into the Documents and Settings folder. Look there for the folder which has the same name as the user who’s profile cannot be loaded and go into it. You may have to unhide hidden files and folders (from the Tools menu, select Folder Options and then the View tab, then, in the Advanced Settings box, under Hidden Files and Folders select ‘Show hidden files and folders’) and then locate the file NTUSER.DAT and rename it NTUSER.OLD, then log out, and back in as the failed user. This should replace the corrupted file and allow you to log back in.

If that fails for any reason, again, log in as another user with administrative rights (such as Administrator) and then open the My Computer icon and navigate to the local hard disk and into the Documents and Settings folder. Look there for the folder which has the same name as the user who’s profile cannot be loaded and rename the folder; usu... Read more

Hi. I'm having this problem where when I tried to log into my computer it gave me this thing that my user login has failed and a temporary profile had been created. I was looking at other form posts with this problem and going through the steps. But while I'm in safe mode at the moment I still can't get into my administrative account on my computer. It won't let me access it because the profile is corrupted(I'm assuming?)

I was using: User Profile Service failed the sign-in - Fix in Windows 8 this thread to help me. But I'm stuck on step five because it just says: profile image path: c:\users\TEMP which is not my user profile but under the .bak it says my correct profile.
I don't have another admin profile. I'm the only person who uses my computer.

This question has been raised before by others but apparently no solution was offered by anyone.

I have two user profiles on the same PC with one (main user)having the administrator rights.

Today, when I attempted to log in as the main user, I got the following message:

" Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator."

I found one microsoft support note which suggests that a new profile needs to be created and the contens of the old profile except .dat files have to be copied in the new profile folders.

However, all my folders in the original profile including MY documents and Favorites are EMPTY.

I am unable to retrieve valuable files. Can anyone suggest a step wise procedure to locate where my files have disappeared.

By the way, I tried system restore operation to restore the system three days backward. yet, everything is the same and the folders are empty. so, i have undone the system restore. thanks

AS AN ADDITIONAL INFO, if it might help, i have discovered rather large "FOUND.000" folders ion"C" drive. the last one has the size 897 mb which is about the same time that the folders and files disappeared. i have read that these foldrrs are similar to .chk files and can be remvoed. however, i am not sure of this in view of the missing data.
